The Smithereens, "The Magic Bag", Ferndale, Michigan last night. If you like jangling, shimmering guitar assaults with full throttle garage band grit, you love the, "as in blown to.." Smithereens. Influenced by the Clash, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, the Kinks, the Who and labeled as alternative rock, power pop, college radio darlings-- since 1980, The Smithereens are a living tribute of soaring guitars of Pete Townshend, Joe Strummer, Dave Davies and Jimi Hendrix. With Marshall Crenshaw playing a brilliant electric 12 string guitar and providing vocal channeling of departed leader and songwriter Pat DiNizio (lost in 2017), the band was greeted by a sold out house of devotees. This band never got their due, and that is a shame. Opening with "Behind the Wall of Sleep" and ending with "Blood and Roses", the catalog of Smithereen gems was well covered, but what got you also was the power and craftsmanship of the covers; "Something" by the Beatles, "Time Won't Let Me", the Outsiders, Lou Reed's "Rock 'n' Roll", a cover of the Who with Pete Townshend windmill guitar strokes, culminating in a "No Matter What" that would make Badfinger proud. This band is airtight and shredding while revering guitar rock structure, with an occasional cocktail. Jim Babjak on lead guitar is as good as there is today. One can't help but smile at the sheer joy they bring to the stage as consummate curators of thrilling guitar ecstacy. Don't miss them if they are around your town.

New Jersey rock outfit The Smithereens have been around for longer than most realise and in a career that spans three decades they do not seem to have taken a break from the live circuit. This is perhaps due to the devotion the fanbase shows when it comes to the veteran rockers as they attend the shows again and again with growing enthusiasm all the time.

Happily sharing their sounds of the 80s with the masses, the group runs through a setlist that calls upon classic albums such as 'Especially For You' and '11'. As the band never achieved what you would consider to be hit singles, they have a freedom with the setlist and they have chosen really well this evening if the roars of approval from the crowd is anything to go by. They remain energetic and passionate during performances of 'We Gotta Get Outta This Place' and the closing number 'What I Like About You'. These guys may have been unjustly looked over during the 80s, yet their credibility is well and truly celebrated now.

They played many of my faves including Blood And Roses, Only A Memory and A Girl Like You. Pat DiNizio was talkative and in fine voice. Great Show and the weather was perfect !

Interview With The Smithereens Drummer Dennis Diken About The Group’s Upcoming Rancho Mirage Concert In March

' src=

By Eric Gray

smithereens band tour

Rancho Mirage, CA

The Smithereens remain one of America’s musical treasures.  Formed in New Jersey in 1980, the band’s timeless power-pop sound – rife with strong, catchy melodies, meaningful lyrics and walls of layered guitar, bass and drums – remains intact.   Now they are performing in Rancho Mirage on March 2nd at Agua Caliente Resort Casino for the 80’s Fest.

Anyone who has heard them on record and seen them live knows they are in for a bold and brash treat, with the band’s creative mix of melodic pop structures, lyrical prowess and crashing waterfalls of high energy sound enabling them to continue to be one of power-pop’s most interesting and entertaining bands.

Signature songs like Blood and Roses, A Girl Like You, Only a Memory, Behind the Wall of Sleep and a raft of critically-acclaimed albums (Especially for You, Green Thoughts, 11 and many others) have cemented the band’s place in the hearts, minds and ears of their devoted worldwide fan-base.

Recently, I got to interview Dennis Diken, drummer and original member of the band about where they came from, where they are now, and their upcoming show.

Here is the interview:

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind The Smithereens new tour? In March, we will turn 44.  Touring is just what we do. Back in the 80’s and 90s we would do extended tours but now as we are older, it’s Thursdays to Sundays.  This is what we always wanted to do since   we were kids playing in our garage.   Jimmy Babjak and I go back to day one of high school in 1971.  Our bass player, Mike Mesaros we’ve known since third grade.  We met Pat DiNizio who passed away through an ad in 1978. We have a long history. This has been a life long gig.

What can fans expect from the upcoming performance at the Rancho Mirage Agua Caliente Resort Casino? With most of our gigs we play songs from when we got a lot of airtime from radio and MTV back in the day.  It’s kind of awesome when we meet friends and they say, we remember those songs! I mean this in all sincerity, we have the attitude we have when we were 14. Performing transforms us back into teenagers. That kind of joy and energy extends to the audience and they really feed off on it.

The Smithereens have been together for decades.  After the passing of founding guitarist Pat DiNizio in 2017, it was undoubtedly a significant loss for The Smithereens and the music community as a whole. How have you and the band managed to continue performing and carrying on the legacy of The Smithereens despite this unfortunate event?  We are very fortunate for both Marshall Crenshaw and Robin Wilson (of the Gin Blossoms.) Marshall has been a friend of ours and has been part of our extended family for years.  We found that with both him and with Robin Wilson, who was a big Smithreens fan, that when we all got together, they were great interpreters of our music. When Pat passed, we didn’t know what the future was going to hold for us. When we found that these other fellas were great singers, we were hoepful to continue the spirit and keep the music together.

smithereens band tour

Performing with Marshall Crenshaw as the lead singer for this show must bring a unique dynamic to The Smithereens’ performances.  Marshall is not only a seasoned veteran of the power-pop scene but also an accomplished artist in his own right. How does it feel to have him on board, carrying on the tradition and high standards that the band has set for themselves and for their fans over the years? It has been great. Marshall has always been a consummate songwriter and singer. We met him as early as 1982 around the time his first album came out.  We shared a producer by the name of Alan Betrock who did records for both of us.  He actually played on our first album.  We knew him and he a was part of our family. It was an easy situation for him to jump in and start singing with the band. We have a lot of respect for him and Pat also had a high level of respect for him as a songwriter.  If you told us back in the 80’s, if we would be playing with him, I don’t think we would’ve believed it. We held him in high regard and we still do.

Are there any particular songs from your repertoire that you’re especially excited to perform live during this tour? I really like playing our signature tunes like Blood and Roses and Behind the Wall of Sleep.. I have a special heart for those songs two songs. A s a musician, you try to inject little differences into the song to make it interesting for yourself and the audience.

How has the music industry changed since The Smithereens first started, and how has the band adapted to these changes? Well we don’t have to consider doing certain type of promo work like visiting a retail outlet to promote our records because the physical product is not there although we still do but its rare these days.  Our approach hasn’t changed that much because first and foremost, we are still performing. Unless the whole hologram industry takes over, I guess there won’t be a real substitute for live music. Just not having physical product to promote is a different ball game, it’s more online and social media even though a lot of our fans still like to buy vinyl and CDs.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians who are looking to have a long and successful career in the music industry? That’s a good question. I wish someone would’ve sat down with me when I was a kid.  You have to really love what you’re doing. You are not going to sustain a career in music unless you have a passion for it. You have to do it because you love it, not because you think you’re going to have a big career and sell a lot of music. Make the music from your heart try not to follow trends or do what other people are doing. Just express what’s in your heart. Also, listening to all types o f music will inform your musical spirit and help you to do what is best on your won instirument.  Try to play other musical instruments.  Piano is great for young people to study. It helps people learn harmonics and melody and is a good grounding for any performer to play that instrument. Try to get on a keyboard as young person, take lessons and let that help you expand your horizons.

Finally, what message or feeling do you hope audiences will take away from The Smithereens’ performances at the Rancho Mirage Agua Caliente Resort Casino? When I go to a show I want to be moved in some way, be it a place of joy or sharing in somebody’s feelings being happy or sad. You want to touch that person, reach into their hearts and make them feel a certain way.  Listeners will take what they want from the lyrics. Ultimately our mission is to entertain people and hopefully help them forget their troubles for 2 hours and help them get though their day with a little more joy.

We really appreciate that peple come out and see us and enjoy what we do. We couldn’t do this outside our own garages if it wasn’t for them.  We’ve met some really nice friends throughout the years touring.

Because our busiest days were in the 80’s and 90’s, we played a lot of colleges at the time. Those folks graduated, got into careers, had kids, and are now empty nesters. We see them coming back out to see us again, reliving their youthful ideals and energies. It really is a blessing to have that happen.

We are looking forward to coming out to perform and, my wife and I love coming to Palm Springs.

Live Review: The Smithereens w/ Marshall Crenshaw @ The Birchmere — 3/19/22

Live Review: The Smithereens w/ Marshall Crenshaw @ The Birchmere — 3/19/22

That the last two years have been unkind to live music might be the understatement of the season. Bands who thrived on live performance were forced to hunker down, ride out the unavoidable pandemic pause, and wait until the proverbial “numbers” came down before performing in front of actual people again.

The Smithereens were scheduled to perform in Northern Virginia in October 2020 which, not knowing how long the pandemic pause would last, was then rescheduled to May 2021. Which, of course, was rescheduled again. Last week, the long-awaited return of the New Jersey-based band finally happened. And what a show it was! The Smithereens stormed back into a sold-out Birchmere and proceeded to melt the paint off the walls.

The Smithereens have long been a favorite of mine, with their Who and Beatles influenced jangly, crunchy guitar driven, and slightly dark power pop rock. Though I’ve seen the band on its most recent jaunts to the area the past few years, I sadly missed out on seeing the band perform during the Pat DiNizio era, the beloved founder, guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter who led the band from 1980 until his untimely passing in 2017. The remaining band members — Jim Babjak (guitars, vocals), Dennis Diken (drums, vocals), and Mike Mesaros (bass, vocals) — decided to carry on and brought on guest singers (and longtime friends of the band), Robin Wilson (Gin Blossoms) and Marshall Crenshaw to handle lead vocal duties.

On March 19, it was Marshall’s turn to fill in for DiNizio, although one could argue that replicating Pat’s unique voice and phrasing is impossible. Crenshaw clearly stepped up to the challenge and was embraced by the audience of die-hard Smithereens fans for the band’s long-overdue return. Also absent was original bass player Mike Mesaros, but Severo “The Thrilla” Jornacion (and former The Smithereens member) filled in without missing a beat.

From the moment the band opened with “Behind the Wall of Sleep” from their 1986 album, Especially for You, we could feel that this music from another generation would be delivered with as much intensity and emotion as when they first played it over three decades ago. During an evening filled with fan favorites, the band also included anecdotes and memories about each song, not to mention the traditional toast to Pat.

Watch The Smithereens perform “She’s Got a Way” live in 1999 on YouTube:

Marshall mentioned that he recorded “Strangers When We Met” with the band but was actually credited as Jerome Jerome so, he said, he could get paid. “She’s Got a Way” (one of my favorite Smithereens songs) was introduced by Marshall as a song about Pat’s daughter, but as Dennis pointed out a second later, it’s about all daughters.

As is his custom, Dennis introduced “House That We Used to Live in” with a brief Smithereens history lesson. He, Jim, and Mike met in high school and had started hanging out and jamming with each other in the early 1970s. They met Pat through a classified advertisement in a local music newspaper, “The Aquarian Weekly,” and the rest is rock and roll history.

Watch the official music video for “House That We Used to Live in” by The Smithereens on YouTube:

The Smithereens’ setlist:

Behind the Wall of Sleep Top of the Pops Sorry Strangers When We Meet Only a Memory Now and Then Especially for You Alone at Midnight Cut Flowers She’s Got a Way Life Is So Beautiful I Don’t Want to Lose You Miles From Nowhere Drown in My Own Tears Spellbound House We Used to Live In / Sparks Blood and Roses

Encore: Please, Please Me (The Beatles cover) No Matter What (Badfinger cover) A Girl Like You

SmithereensIII-20

For those of us who grew up with The Smithereens, hearing these songs again after so many years is a welcome memory of youthful abandon. Though the passing of time is inevitable, in terms of the music we love, it is also meaningless. By the time the show Saturday’s show was winding down, the band played songs from which they drew inspiration: “Sparks” (The Who cover), “Please, Please Me” (The Beatles), “No Matter What” (Badfinger), and “A Girl Like You” with its patented Beatles-inspired Jimmy Babjak solo (try and guess which song!). And no doubt, there is a bunch of kids in some garage out there right now listening to, and drawing inspiration from, The Smithereens.

Watch the official music video of “A Girl Like You” by The Smithereens on YouTube:

Recently, I became aware that an abundance of bands from the 1980s are still making music and scheduled to perform in the DC area: Gang of Four, Tears for Fears, Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe, English Beat, Blondie, the list goes on! Much more than nostalgia acts, that these musicians are back out there playing the songs of their youth speaks volumes about the emotional impact the songs had on their fans in the first place. Two years, the concert meant to commemorate their 40th anniversary was delayed two years. But whether celebrating 40 years, or 42, The Smithereens show no sign of slowing down demonstrating that, once again, age is just a number.

CANNIBAL CORPSE's Russian Tour Attempted To Be Shut Down By Religious Protesters

Calls of blasphemy erupt!

"We sent mass requests to the prosecutor with the description of what is happening at the concerts of the group, the lyrics of their songs, which are described in detail in the rape and murder of children." He said that believers particularly outraged by open calls for the murder of priests in the lyrics, as well as a detailed description of sexual acts with children and killing them. "It is absolutely outrageous. This is an abomination. People with such thoughts should simply be isolated from society and placed in a mental hospital, " – says Tsorionov.

Aerosmith Announce Rescheduled Peace Out Farewell Tour Dates

The band initially launched the tour on Sept. 2, 2023 in Philadelphia , but were forced off the road after just three shows when singer Steven Tyler suffered damage to his vocal cords.

Except for opening night, the Black Crowes will once again serve as the support act for the tour, which kicks off Sept. 20 in Pittsburgh and is scheduled to conclude on Jan. 26 in Buffalo. You can see a complete list of dates below. Teddy Swims will serve as the opening act on Sept. 20.

All previously purchased tickets will be honored for all rescheduled shows. Tickets for newly added shows and the remaining tickets for the rescheduled shows will go on sale Friday, April 12 at 10AM local time.

When originally announcing the tour, Aerosmith revealed that drummer Joey Kramer would not be participating. John Douglas took his place at the band’s 2023 Peace Out shows. “While Joey Kramer remains a beloved founding member of Aerosmith, he has regrettably made the decision to sit out the currently scheduled touring dates to focus his full attention on his family and health,” the group explained. “Joey’s unmistakable and legendary presence behind the drum kit will be sorely missed.”

Aerosmith announces rescheduled Peace Out farewell tour: New concert dates and ticket info

smithereens band tour

Aerosmith will be back in the saddle again this fall.

The veteran rockers, who postponed their Peace Out farewell tour after only a few shows in September, will return for a 40-date run starting Sept. 20 in Pittsburgh. The tour wraps Feb. 26, 2025 in Buffalo, NY.

The bulk of the dates are rescheduled, but the band added three cities: Pittsburgh, Orlando and Philadelphia, where their goodbye run kicked off last September.

All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the new dates, while tickets for the new shows will go on sale at 10 a.m. local time April 12 via ticketmaster.com . For those who previously purchased tickets and cannot attend the rescheduled concerts, refunds will be available at point of purchase. A series of VIP packages are also available at aerosmith.com/VIP.

As with the original dates, The Black Crowes will open for Aerosmith.

Why did Aerosmith postpone their farewell tour?

After playing only a handful of concerts in September, the “Walk This Way” heroes had to hit pause after singer Steven Tyler damaged his vocal cords. He also fractured his larynx and was given doctor’s orders not to sing for 30 days.

But Aerosmith opted to give Tyler ample time to recuperate and scuttle all of their shows until 2024.

The wiry frontman known for his searing rock yowls, said at the time that the injury occurred at a Sept. 10 show in New York and that the vocal cord damage “led to subsequent bleeding.”

What songs can fans expect to hear at Aerosmith’s farewell shows?

USA TODAY was there for opening night of the Peace Out tour Sept. 3 in Philadelphia. As the tour is also a celebration of the band’s 50 years in the music industry, the setlist reflected their vast catalog.

The band – Tyler, guitarist Joe Perry, bassist Tom Hamilton and guitarist Brad Whitford, along with drummer John Douglas filling in for Joey Kramer – sounded in peak form for their deserved victory lap.

Songs ranged from singalong rock smashes “Livin’ on the Edge,” “Sweet Emotion” and “Rag Doll” to the rarely played album track “Adam’s Apple” and a dip into Aerosmith’s blues roots with “Hangman Jury.”

Aerosmith relaunches Peace Out farewell tour, will play Detroit in January

smithereens band tour

Aerosmith's rebooted farewell tour will bring the iconic rock band to Little Caesars Arena on Jan. 4 for its final Detroit concert.

The Black Crowes remain aboard to open the show, just as they were when the tour was initially announced in May 2023.

Eighteen months after front man Steven Tyler suffered a vocal injury that derailed the band’s much-hyped goodbye outing, Aerosmith has announced its return to the road, starting with a Sept. 20 show in Pittsburgh and wrapping with a Feb. 26 show in Buffalo.

Aerosmith's Jan. 4 show in Detroit will follow the band's New Years Eve concert in Boston, where Tyler, guitarist Joe Perry and company formed in 1970 before going on to rise up the rock ranks with a gritty and bluesy sound that produced hits such as “Walk This Way,” “Dream On” and “Sweet Emotion.”

The LCA show, originally scheduled for Sept. 18, 2023, was shifted to January 2024 when Tyler sustained vocal damage early in the tour. Weeks later, the entire farewell run was delayed indefinitely when the singer was diagnosed with a more serious fractured larynx.

Fans who held on to tickets for that original Detroit date are good to go. Any open seats will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday through Ticketmaster.
