How to plan a shark-centric weekend in Virginia Beach

Enjoy sharks safely in a fun-filled and educational weekend trip to Virginia Beach and Norfolk.

By Editorial July 22, 2015

See sharks in Virginia Beach

By Sophia Rutti

Sharks have been notorious in the news for these last few weeks. They’ve been featured in their own week of television by Discovery Channel’s Shark Week  as well as less light-heartedly featured on news channels due to several shark attacks. With so much buzz being in the air about sharks its important not to run from the sea and think of sharks as the enemy, but rather to learn about the great predators in a safe environment.

For all NoVA locals, the answer is clear: a weekend trip to Norfolk and Virginia Beach.

Evidence appears to show that warm waters have brought more sharks to the East Coast than normal and experts believe this may be the cause for the increase in shark attacks. Seven shark attacks have occurred off the East Coast in 2015 alone, two of which occurred on the same day, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to start avoiding the beaches.

Head to the sea, but stay on land to learn more about these incredible ocean predators. Less than four hours away, you can spend a weekend at Norfolk and Virginia Beach learning about different sharks, hunting for shark teeth and even dipping your toes in the ocean—and in light of recent events, maybe literally just your toes.

Getting there: From Fairfax City to Virginia Beach is approximately 3 hours and 15 minutes .

The distance between Norfolk and Virginia Beach is under thirty minutes without traffic, which makes it easy to stay in one place at night and enjoy both during the day.

Enjoying sharks safely while there: A beach trip is typically synonymous with lying on scalding sand like a spineless sack of sunburned skin, surrounded by sandcastles. While we all know how enjoyable that scalding sand can be, there is so much more that this oceanfront area has to offer.

In one weekend you can check out museums, watch 3-D ocean documentaries in huge theaters and even touch a shark.

Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center This aquarium is full of exciting exhibits, but there is one that will appeal to the shark lover most. You can visit the Sand Tiger Shark exhibit and learn about their unique style of hunting and ways of life. The aquarium has five different sand tiger sharks in its Norfolk Canyon Aquarium.

Also at the aquarium is the National Geographic 3-D theater that stands six stories high. Currently playing now is David Cameron’s “Deepsea Challenge 3D,” that follows the film-maker’s dive to the depths of the Mariana Trench as well as “ Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Secret Ocean 3D” that brings to life even the smallest sea-life through vibrant footage.

Nauticus At Nauticus , a shark lovers dream will come true. Sharks typically seem like distant ideas to only be seen on film, but at Nauticus they are something to be seen and even touched in person. Every day at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m . there is a shark touch event for all enthusiasts.

There is also a Shark Lab open all day for you to learn and listen to a guided discussion of shark’s habits and habitats.

Later in the day, when you’re getting tired after all the shark touching, head to the 3-D Nauticus Theater and watch the “Great White Shark” documentary that plays every day at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Virginia Beach Boardwalk When it comes to having fun, sometimes the whole family doesn’t agree that shark-themed events are the way to do it. For the naysayers out there, head out to the boardwalk for a variety of exciting things like live musical acts, outdoor restaurants and lots of sculpture art along the way.

Colonial Beach When you’re headed back up north to go home, make sure to stop by Colonial Beach . It is one of the best spots to search for and find fossilized shark teeth. For a guide to identifying the fossilized shark teeth, click  here .

Eating & Staying Norfolk and Virginia Beach are both booming areas, so there is no shortage of places to stay or eat while you’re there. For families looking to enjoy their beach weekend without hassle TripAdvisor recommends the Holiday Inn & Suites North Beach  and Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront  in Virginia Beach and in Norfolk the Norfolk Waterside Marriott . To take a look at the other top hotels as recommended by TripAdvisor check out the 30 best Virginia Beach hotels and the 30 best Norfolk hotels to find the one that is the best fit for you.

When it comes to what to eat while there, there is no question that seafood is the correct answer. Feast like a shark would on different aquatic prey by trying out Tautog’s Restaurant in Virginia Beach or A.W Shucks in Norfolk. Or, if you’re willing to leave the itinerary behind, walk the streets in either city until you find the waterfront seafood restaurant of your dreams.

Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Working with experienced fishing guides who know the best local spots and techniques can dramatically increase your odds of a great day. Having someone who is on the water every day and knows the area like the back of their hand is going to give you the best chances of success.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

Even if you’ve got a great setup already in your home waters, booking a guide also provides a great opportunity to experience new techniques, new locations, or even a chance at a new target species to knock off the bucket list.

Sandbar Shark

A sandbar shark swims among fish in the Norfolk Canyon exhibit.

Species Name : Carcharhinus plumbeus

Sandbar sharks are one of the largest coastal shark species, and the most common along the eastern US. They are closely related to bull sharks, though they are rarely aggressive towards humans.

Life Expectancy

Estimated 30 years.

Bottom-dwelling fish, smaller sharks, cephalopods, shrimp, and crabs.

Shallow coastal waters in temperate and tropical regions.

Worldwide, including the East Coast from Cape Cod to Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean.

About Sandbar Sharks

  • Physical Description
  • Diet & Habitat
  • Conservation

Length : Up to 8 feet

Weight : Up to 200 pounds

Sandbar sharks possess brown or gray skin with white on their stomachs. They are distinguished by a tall dorsal fin on their back, as well as short, round snouts and triangular teeth. They also possess large, broad pectoral fins.

Diet These sharks will prey upon bottom-dwelling fish such as eels, skates and rays, as well as smaller sharks, cephalopods like octopus and squid, shrimp, and crabs.

Habitat This species resides near the ocean floor in shallow areas along the coast, such as harbors and bays. They are the most common shark species found along the East Coast of the US, and the most common in the Chesapeake Bay, which is a major nursery area for sandbar sharks.

Reproductive Behavior

Sandbar sharks become sexually mature around their mid teens, and females will give birth between June and August every two or three years to live pups in shallow coastal areas. The pups, which are around 2 feet long when they're born, will stay in their nursery areas until late fall before moving south to warmer waters in schools.

Relationship With Humans

The sandbar shark is rarely involved in altercations with humans, as it only hunts smaller prey away from beaches and closer to the ocean floor, rather than the surface.

Concerns Populations are considered overfished, having dropped possibly by two-thirds in the southwestern Atlantic from the 1970s into the 1990s. Sandbar sharks don't reproduce or grow as quickly as other species, increasing the vulnerability of their populations.

Celebrations Within the US, recreational fishing of sandbar sharks is prohibited, and any recreational angler that hooks a sandbar shark must release it immediately without taking it out of the water. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) manages the species under the Consolidated Highly Migratory Species Fishery Management Plan, and fishery regulations have resulted in a slight increase in sandbar shark populations. Only a few commercial vessels are selected each year to harvest sandbar sharks for research under NOAA's supervision.

Resident Sandbar Sharks

A close up of a sandbar shark's head.

Norfolk Canyon Sharks

Our sandbar sharks reside in our Norfolk Canyon Aquarium, along with our other large shark species: the sand tiger shark, and our nurse shark.

IUCN Classification

Endangered (en).

A taxon is Endangered (EN) when the best available evidence indicates that it meets any of the criteria A to E for Endangered, and it is therefore considered to be facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild.

Fossil Beach at Westmoreland State Park in Virginia

Westmoreland State Park: Hunt for Shark Teeth at Fossil Beach

Over the weekend, two of my kids and I camped at Westmoreland State Park. It’s just north of historic Montross on Virginia’s Northern Neck.

I was eager to check out the Turkey Neck Trail for my new hiking guidebook for Falcon Guides on coastal hiking trails . Sadly, more than half the trail was closed.

shark tour virginia beach

There are less than eight miles of hiking trails at Westmoreland State Park, so this was a bummer. I fell back on the Big Meadow Trail, a trail I hiked last summer.

The Big Meadow Trail leads to Fossil Beach. It’s the most popular trail in the state park. Before we left the campground, we moseyed over to the trailhead.

Big Meadow Trail

The Big Meadow Trail begins just steps from the visitor center. There’s a large trail kiosk and a big sign that reads “Fossil Beach.” It’s hard to get off on the wrong foot.

shark tour virginia beach

Bring along a sieve or colander as you’ll want to hunt for fossils, like shark teeth, while at Fossil Beach. My spaghetti colander was all about sand sifting this day.

On the return, plan to walk out behind the visitor center to take in panoramic views across the Potomac River from atop the famed Horsehead Cliffs.

The hike on the Big Meadow Trail begins with a slow, easy descent under a forest canopy. Signs along the way point out trees, like Black Cherry and Pawpaw.

shark tour virginia beach

The red blazes are impossible to miss as you make your way to Fossil Beach. At the .3-mile mark, you’ll reach a comfy bench for those eager to take a quick break.

Tidal Marsh

At the .6-mile mark, you’ll reach a tidal marsh that – this time of year – is filled with yellow irises. These flowers are populous in wet areas and along shorelines.

shark tour virginia beach

I later learned that while these showy yellow irises are beautiful, they are also invasive. They can easily crowd out native vegetation. Yikes.

In a few more steps, you’ll reach what was once a trail that led to a boardwalk, an observation tower and the Turkey Neck Trail. This is now closed.

shark tour virginia beach

You’ll arrive at a perpetually muddy area (which I recall from last year). There is now a short boardwalk and wooden planks on which to cross this section.

Fossil Beach

At the .7-mile mark, you will arrive at Fossil Beach. There is a bench and a small sandy beach on the right. Due to erosion, you cannot access the beach on the left.

shark tour virginia beach

For fossil hunting, go at low tide for the best luck at scooping up fossil-like shells, maybe a shark tooth or two. Plan to bring your patience as well.

We didn’t find any shark teeth, but we had fun, even in the light rain. You can also enjoy scenic views of the beautiful sandstone cliffs. They are gorgeous.

shark tour virginia beach

Once you’ve finished fossil hunting, simply re-trace your steps to the trailhead.

Wrap-Up Notes

From the visitor center, this hike took us less than 45 minutes, including time spent sifting for shells and shark teeth.

If you choose to visit Westmoreland State Park, plan to rent a kayak from the Osprey Boat House when in-season. You can also rent stand-up paddleboards.

shark tour virginia beach

We rented a double kayak and a single kayak to view the sandstone cliffs from the Potomac River. Simply spectacular. Highly recommend.

You can rent kayaks and stand-up paddleboards every day between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Also, on weekends from mid-April to Memorial Day.

shark tour virginia beach

You can rent them on weekends after Labor Day until Columbus Day, too. The last rental is 90 minutes before closing time.

We booked a tent site in Campground A, which is closest to the camp store and visitor center. Firewood is available at the camp store for $6 per bundle.

shark tour virginia beach

Nearby, plan to visit George Washington Birthplace National Monument in Colonial Beach. It’s a short 10-minute drive and there are a couple of nature trails.

Another idea is to drive to historic Montross. There are murals on buildings across this small town. Order a cuppa at The Art of Coffee and take a stroll.

shark tour virginia beach

One final note, and to allay any confusion, there is a Fossil Beach at York River State Park, too. Only Westmoreland State Park is known to have shark teeth.
