OVERVIEW OF THE TOUR

Join our Murray River Cruise Tour from Adelaide, as we travel through the rolling hills and Mallee Outback to Australia’s longest river, the Murray River. The Murray River provides a much-needed source of water to his dry landscape. The landscape is rich in green vineyards and golden citrus orchids.

Our Murray River Cruise Tour begins as we travel through Mount Barker, Monarto and the Mallee Outback landscape, prior to boarding the famous riverboat cruise of Australia’s longest river. During your river cruise, you will glide past large rocky cliffs and green willows which are located along the banks of the Murray. The river has dramatically changed over time, and you will gain an insight into the erosion which has taken place on the banks of the river over time.

River Red Gum trees are the dominant species of flora which you will find within the area. Red Gum Trees require a lot of water to survive, and renowned for dropping their limbs. Red Gum Trees date back thousands of years and are significantly big in height and diameter. As well as various forms of plantation, you can also take in the many species of bird life which reside by the Murray River. Enjoy coffee or tea and a fabulous buffet lunch whilst listening to the many historical stories of the river, to add another dimension to your experience.

Mannum is the location along the Murray where paddle steamers were first introduced to. Mannum is formally known as the gateland to the harsh inland of Australia, making the area historically significant.

From Mannum, take the time to explore through the charming villages of the Adelaide Hills. During our journey back to Adelaide, out Murray River Cruise Tour takes a slight detour and stops at Melba’s Chocolate Factory where you will be able to purchase some goods to take home to family and friends.

The Murray River Cruise Tour is perfect for those hoping for a relaxing afternoon spent on Australia’s longest river. Take in the sights of the Murray River, whilst learning about the proud history of the region.

Murray River River Cruises and Tours

Murray river cruises, cruising the murray river is one of the most amazing and surprising experiences you'll have..

The Murray is much more than a river, it is quintessentially Australian experience. Within a relatively short distance from Adelaide and Melbourne you can experience jaw-dropping beauty, diverse history and luxury all surrounded by a sense of peace that has to be experienced to understand.

As the Murray carves its way through our sun-burnt and contrasting landscape you'll discover a new part of the world that's not overrun with tourists and will allow you time to reconnect with yourself, family and friends.

Enjoy a Proud Mary Cruise

Join the intimate cruising vessel, the Proud Mary to discover the Murray River's eco-system at its best. Only a 45 minute drive from Adelaide the vessel embarks and disembarks guests from Murray Bridge , where garaging is available for those wishing not to transfer via our luxury Expedition coach. Our cruises operate 365 days a year and include all meals, prepared exclusively by our resident chefs, private river view en-suite accommodation and daily nature based shore excursions.

Offering both 5 night and 2 night cruise, the Proud Mary gives you an excellent opportunity to see the river environment in a different perspective and may allow you to view some of the nocturnal wildlife, especially birds such as pelicans, night herons, owls and coots. Our experienced and friendly staff will ensure all your personal needs are attended to every step of the journey, so sit back, relax and experience the beautiful Murray River at its best aboard the Proud Mary cruising vessel.

Cruises on Australia's Murray River

The Murray River and its surroundings are normally overlooked as a significant cruising region of international appeal but many visitors are now discovering the Murray River is a wonderfully natural and great place enjoy. A slow river that easily touches your soul and satisfies the inner spirit.

Spud Hilton, San Francisco Chronicle Staff Writer recently stated "The Murray is the ultimate lazy river, a 100-million-year-old ribbon that winds 1,470 miles through South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales, passing farms, Aboriginal homelands, red gum forests, holiday cottages, arid scrub and towering ochre-colored limestone cliffs festooned with snow-white cockatoos."

Mornings you'll find mirror-perfect water, not yet disturbed by by a sole. As the mist gently rises over the water, golden sunrays pierce the huge river red gums and pelicans silently look for fish as they'd done the night before. You should encounter incredible wildlife including kangaroos, emus, koalas, goannas, kookaburras and much more. You'll find other early risers will enjoy the serenity with you but there's plenty of quiet spots to be with yourself and a nice cup of tea or coffee.

Traffic along the river is fairly minimal. You'll find milk boats, fishing craft, some ferries in South Australia, occasional small paddleboats and a diverse amarda of houseboats (Murray River is the houseboating capital of Australia). The Murray is used for by watersports enthusiasts with ski boats and canoes and kayaks .

Part of the rich history of Australia is it's Murray-Darling paddle steamers . The Murray River was used by more than a hundred paddle steamers and barges during the heydays to the late 1800's to deliver supplies to settlements upstream and returned loaded with wool and wheat. When the railroads opened up the territory by 1890, the paddle steamers ceased as a popular mode of transportation. Nowadays a few remain for leisure cruising on the Murray yet Australia still has the largest range of active paddle steamers in the world.

Naturally on each cruise you'll receive a mixture of information on river history, folklore, environmental information, free time to chat, relax and much more. Some longer cruises allow you the opportunity to get off the boat and experience Aboriginal culture, shearing exhibitions and other tours to learn, engage and explore the local region. You can enjoy local walks at some of the historic towns or cliff top climbs.

Back on board while the rugged and beautiful world of the Murray River landscapes slowly pass you by, you'll stay in comfortable and clean cabins on overnight accommodation for the longer cruises. Most cruises offer meal and food options. Short river cruises may offer you light snacks or cafeteria style food, while the longer overnight cruises offer great dining with food that is professionally prepared (and yes you can even experience Vegemite if you want one of Australia's great challenges).

One of the greatest things you'll take away from your Murray River cruise is an appreciation of the Murray's abundant beauty and intrinsic value to Australia's culture and meaning. Aboriginal occupation of the region in some parts dates back over 40,000 years. There are opportunities for guided indigenous walks, where guides talk and showcase the importance of the land and their relationship with the river. You'll enjoy the dreamtime story as different Aboriginal tribes and clans offer their stories of the land and river. The stories connect you to their ancient culture and give you a deep insight to the need to protect Australia's most important river.

Still not sure you're going to have a great time?

As you sit back and absorb one of the world's most incredible and diverse river systems you can watch the captain slowly guide the boat around the myriad of river bends. Each bend unfolds a new view, new landscape and new secret that will keep you guessing and wondering. But the biggest question you may have is "will the captain let me drive?" now that would top off your Murray River "no worries" cruising experience!

Murray River Cruise Tips

1 day murray river cruise

It surprises many people to learn that Australia's Murray River is the third longest navigable river in the world, after the Amazon and the Nile. It stretches for almost 2,520 kilometres (1,565 miles), flowing from its source high in the New South Wales' Snowy Mountains through Victoria and South Australia before eventually spilling into the Great South Ocean in the Coorong district, southeast of Adelaide.

The mighty Murray also has a captivating story, which is 130 million years in the making. Aboriginal occupation dates back an impressive 40,000 years, with many different groups including the Ngarrindjeri and Coorong peoples living on and alongside the lands around the river.

The Murray forms part of the Murray-Darling river system and is fed by two other main waterways, the Darling and Murrumbidgee Rivers. It was first discovered by two European explorers (Hamilton H. Hume and William H. Hovell) in 1824, but it wasn't until five years later that Charles Sturt navigated the river officially, naming it after the Scottish soldier and statesman, Sir George Murray. From 1853 on, the river became a virtual water highway, as paddle steamers transported wool, wheat and various other goods up and down the river system.

Although it suffered due to the development of road and air travel, the Murray River is still a working one; it continues to be a source of produce, dubbed the "Food Bowl of Australia," and provides a water supply to more than 1.5 million households. And as every visitor today discovers, it's a scenic waterway with a unique character, blessed with natural beauty, rich in heritage and history, and dotted with quaint townships along its fascinating banks.

A large and varied plethora of fauna and flora exists in and around the river valley; animal and bird species include emus, koalas, western grey kangaroos, bearded dragon lizards, red-rumped parrots, black swans, pelicans and even dolphins, which frequent the ocean end of the river. Also plentiful are river red gums, a type of eucalyptus tree that line the river banks. The Murray's waters hold a variety of fish including the famed Murray cod, bream, perch and redfin.

Best Time for Murray River Cruises

The Murray River region can be enjoyed all year; however, there are pluses and minuses for travelling in different seasons. The lower Murray, where cruises operate, has a similar weather pattern to the city of Adelaide, which is often described as "hot Mediterranean." During the summer, days are long with daylight until around 8.30 p.m., with temperatures ranging from around 16 C (60 F) to 35 C (95 F).

By contrast, in winter the days are much shorter, with daylight only until around 4.30 p.m. and temperatures ranging from 6 C (44 F) to 17 C (62 F). There can be extreme variations at both ends of the thermometer, however, with temperatures soaring to over 41 C (105 F) in peak summer (and a risk of bush fires), and dropping to near freezing in winter. Overall, the region is regarded as quite dry with low levels of rainfall, most of it occurring during winter months. (For more on cruising in Australia, see our Australia Cruise Basics .)

Murray River Cruise Lines

The Murray is a niche cruising region; currently, there are two main operators offering cruises of several days from South Australia. One is Captain Cook Cruises , which is part of the Sealink Travel Group; it has been operating there since around 1986 with cruises on the 120-guest paddle wheeler, the Murray Princess. The other is Proud Mary, a smaller paddle steamer accommodating just 36 guests. Both vessels operate 365 days a year.

Murray River Cruise Itineraries

When you're cruising the Murray with Captain Cook, there are weekly three-, four- and seven-night cruises to choose from, all sailing roundtrip from Mannum. The three-night Discovery Cruise leaves on Friday afternoon, returning on Monday morning, with stops including Murray Bridge, and moorings at several scenic spots along the way. The four-night Outback Heritage Cruise departs on Monday afternoon, returning on Friday afternoon, with stops including Blanchetown, Swan Reach and Ngaut Ngaut, and moorings at scenic spots in between. The seven-night Murraylands and Wildlife Cruise combines both cruises, with departures on Monday or Friday. Captain Cook also has several special cruises on its annual calendar, including a four-night Julie Goodwin Cooking Cruise with Australia's first MasterChef; two seven-night cruises from Loxton to Mannum; and a Christmas in July cruise. Transfers from Adelaide are included in the fare, and there is car parking in Mannum if you self-drive. Captain Cook Cruises also offers a complimentary Barossa Valley day tour post-cruise to passengers on its seven-day cruises; you also have the option of adding several touring packages to your cruise to Kangaroo Island, either escorted by bus or self-driving.

Proud Mary has two itineraries available. The short option is a two-night Murray River Discovery Cruise, which departs from Murray Bridge every Friday evening and returns Sunday afternoon, with stops including Mannum and plenty of scenic cruising in between. The longer option is a five-night Wildlife Expedition Cruise, which departs from Murray Bridge on Sunday evening and returns on Friday afternoon, with stops including Mannum, Swan Reach, Blanchetown, and Ngaut Ngaut. Coach transfers are available from Adelaide for an additional fee, and there are parking facilities at Murray Bridge if you self-drive.

Adelaide

Murray River Port Highlights

Adelaide. It's not a port of call on a Murray River cruise, but most people will fly into and out of the South Australian capital, a cultured and casual city which is not only a gateway to some of Australia's best wine country but also has plenty of its own alluring attractions to offer visitors. Adelaide has a multicultural flavour evident in its restaurants, plus a strong music scene and plenty of history. Port Adelaide is a historic enclave, while just down the tram tracks is Glenelg, the city's easygoing beach community. The rolling Adelaide Hills area is 12 minutes away via car. Top sights in the city include the Art Gallery of South Australia, with exhibitions including Australian, modern Australian, contemporary Aboriginal and European art; the Adelaide Botanic Garden, with its huge Bicentennial Conservatory recreating a tropical rainforest; and the Adelaide Zoo, home to around 1,800 species of critters including Australia's only giant pandas.

Blanchetown. This famous Murray River township is 275 km (170 miles) upstream from the mouth of the river, and one of the first river settlements in South Australia. It began life as a stopover point and watering hole for travellers, as well as an important terminal where all manner of goods were offloaded from paddle steamers to be cleared through the local customs house. It's also the home of Lock No. 1, the first of a series of seven locks on the Murray. Besides the lock, today Blanchetown has a mix of historic buildings, including an original post office, pub and police station, and traditional riverside holiday homes.

Loxton. This historic village is often described as the "Garden Town of the Riverland," and is famous for its beautifully maintained gardens. A key attraction is the Banrock Station Wine and Wetland Centre, where you can walk scenic trails and view abundant wildlife from bird hides. The Loxton Community Conservation and Heritage Park has highlights including an early homestead ruin and diverse native plants.

Mannum. This is one of the Murray's primary historic towns, located on the broad reaches and blessed with natural beauty, history and heritage (it's the birthplace of the Murray River paddle steamer). The first vessel, the Mary Ann, was built in 1853 by William and Thomas Randell, sons of one of the first settlers in the region, and was used on the Murray to trade goods. Now a tourist destination, Mannum has many original buildings to enjoy, plus quaint shops and cafes, and a thriving houseboat industry.

Murray Bridge. Often dubbed the crown of the Murray region, and located just 80 km (50 miles) from Adelaide, Murray Bridge is a picturesque small town famous for water sports, including boating, fishing, swimming; it also has plenty of walking trails. A new attraction just outside of the town is Monarto Zoological Park, an open-range zoo and breeding ground for arid and grassland animals.

Ngaut Ngaut. This is a conservation park and the place to gain insight into the lives and history of the traditional landowners, the Nganguraku people. Visiting here involves a tour with local guides to view rock art engraved into the limestone cliffs, observe archaeological excavations, learn about the fauna and flora of the park, and experience the dramatic natural landscape of the area from a cliff-top viewing area.

**Swan Reach.**The small township of Swan Reach is located between Blanchetown and Mannum in the Barossa Valley and was first settled in 1838 by German families. It gained its name from the large number of black swans that once thrived in the area. The surrounding landscape is one of towering cliffs, including the famous Big Bend, which has the tallest cliffs along the Murray River and is believed to be up to 20 million years old.

Other Points of Interest. Paddle wheelers operating on the Murray River cruise past a number of other scenic spots and interesting settlements. They include Noa-No Landing, where the original paddle steamer Mary-Ann was first launched; Younghusband, which was established in 1870 and has a picturesque river reserve; and Walker Flat, a popular holiday retreat for Adelaide celebrities that's marked by high cliffs and a large number of water birds. There's also Devon Downs, which hit headlines worldwide in 1929 when a local homesteader found a skeleton of an Aboriginal boy and some unique tools dating back approximately 7,000 years.

Add time for local touring. Including a few days in Adelaide pre- or post-cruise, visiting the Barossa Valley (Australia's wine capital, which is an hour's drive from the city) or heading across the water to the natural wonder of Kangaroo Island, a short ferry ride from Adelaide.

Bring sun protection. Sunburn is a risk at any time in South Australia, but in summer the UV rays are extreme so a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and plenty of sunscreen are recommended. Insect repellent isn't essential unless you are cruising in peak summer and are susceptible to bites. In winter, pack plenty of warm layers and an umbrella as temperatures can plummet and it may rain.

Take a pair of sturdy, comfortable walking shoes. You will be getting on and off ship frequently, and there are not always paved areas ashore. A backpack is also useful as many shore excursions involve walks, and you will need to carry water when it's hot.

Pack your binoculars. There is plenty to see on land and from the water.

Bring the essentials. Many of the townships (except for Mannum and Murray Bridge) are small with limited shopping opportunities, so take any essential items with you including sunscreen, camera batteries, toiletries and any over-the-counter medications you might need.

Bring a bathing suit. Throw a bathing suit into your suitcase if you cruise in summer, as there are opportunities for a swim in safe spots along the way. There are strong currents upriver, however, so beware if you're not a strong swimmer.

Prepare to be disconnected. Cell phones may not work in between, or beyond, major townships.

Travel healthy. Be sure you are fit to travel as there will be no doctor onboard, and some of the townships and mooring spots are quite remote, without hospitals. They also don't have much in the way of good facilities for special-needs travellers.

Pass on the passport. You won't need a passport to cruise the Murray, just ID on embarkation.

Available Departures

Day 1 - norris bend.

After arriving by coach from Echuca you depart Torrumbarry upstream, enjoy an afternoon Devonshire tea, take in the sights and sounds of the river and get to know your fellow cruisers. There’s ample time to chat with the skipper in the wheelhouse to learn about PS Emmylou, her river history or simply relax in your private cabin.

When the sun begins to set, this marks the start of ‘Happy Hour’. Enjoy a drink in the saloon before a chefprepared welcome dinner. Listen to the river birds’ evening chorus and watch for kangaroos, wombats, and many species of birds as the stars begin to appear. Tonight, we moor at Norris Bend where your crew will have a riverside campfire (weather dependant) ready for you to enjoy after diner.

Day 2 - Onshore Tour & perricoota Station

After a hearty breakfast, Emmylou cruises to the famous Perricoota Station, the property first settled by James Maiden in 1843, and famous for starring in the TV mini series “All the River Run” where PS Emmylou was renamed PS Providence. Here you will depart to Restdown Winery, producers of fine organic wines and Hereford beef. Join the property’s owners for a guided tour along a 1.4km wetlands walking trail, highlighting items of great Aboriginal significance before a gourmet lunch of local produce and wine tastings.

Arriving back at Perricoota Station the skipper will invite you to walk along the historical buildings and immaculate gardens of Perricoota Station before happy hour. Tonight enjoy a fabulous dinner on the deck on Emmylou overlooking the famous Perricoota Station mansion. Tonight, after dinner it’s Movie Night with a special presentation of “Riverboats Remembered”, a fabulous historical presentation featuring archival footage of the paddle steamers and communities of the Murray River from the early 1900s through to the mid1970s.

Day 3 - All Day Cruising & Layfield Lane

For early risers and keen photographers, the morning mist and wildlife around Perricoota is a sight to behold. After breakfast, Emmylou gracefully steams  onwards upstream for a full day of cruising towards our riverside mooring, Layfield Lane mooring.

Today enjoy lunch on the deck or in the saloon with plenty of time to relax with a good book or just take in the river views. Tonight, enjoy a grand dinner on the riverbank – our signature Australian BBQ (weather dependent), lit up by candles on the tables and stars in the sky. After dinner enjoy casual conversation around the campfire (weather dependent) with live  entertainment before retiring for the evening.

Day 4 - River Cruising & Echuca

Start your day with a satisfying breakfast to fuel up for an exciting half-day adventure on both land and water. Your guided Henry Hopwood Town Tour tour will take you through the charming town of Echuca, uncovering hidden historical gems like Hopwood’s Punt and the pontoon bridge. This bridge, the brainchild of Echuca’s founder Henry Hopwood, marks the initial river crossing in the area.

Next, prepare to be enchanted by our 110 year old PS Canberra featuring a red gum timber hull built in 1912 at Goolwa South Australia. Enjoy morning tea aboard. Before returning to Emmylou for lunch when your river cruise adventure continues upstream cruising past the imposing Port of Echuca Wharf once home to over 100 paddlesteamers in its heyday. This evening you will enjoy a farewell dinner cruising upriver of Echuca .

Day 5 - Silo Tour & Layfield Lane

Prepare yourself for an engaging half-day expedition that will immerse you in the beauty of local artistry and historical vignettes. The day kicks off with a visit to the breathtaking local art silos situated at Rochester and Colbinabbin. These large-than-life paintings are a testament to the region’s rich heritage and are sure to leave an indelible impression. Your excursion doesn’t just end with the visual feast of the silos; it extends to a delightful lunch at a renowned local pub. Here, you’ll not only savor delicious fare but also have the unique opportunity to interact with the pub’s welcoming owners and engage in lively conversations with the friendly locals.

As you reboard the Emmylou, get ready to unwind during the afternoon cruise downstream with a relaxing Devonshire tea. The serene ambiance of the river complements the delectable treats served, providing a perfect backdrop for a leisurely afternoon. As the sun starts savor a refreshing drink in the ship’s saloon while basking in the scenic beauty surrounding you.

As twilight sets in, a magical experience awaits you at Layfield Lane. Following a sumptuous Australian BBQ dinner served on the riverbank the atmosphere transforms with live entertainment around a crackling campfire under the sparkling stars

Day 6 - Onshore Tour and River Cruising

Experience the perfect start to your day with a delightful breakfast before embarking on a captivating half-day land and river tour that promises to be an  unforgettable journey. Your adventure begins with a visit to the fascinating Heritage Farm Museum, where you’ll immerse yourself in the charm of the past.

Next, get ready to be enchanted as you join the Murray Explorer, a magnificent vessel that will take you on an Expedition cruise along the upper Murray River. Prepare to be awestruck by the natural wonders that surround you, from breathtaking landscapes to a rich array of wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for White Faced Herons and you may even find a King Fisher, all this along with a captain’s commentary.

Later, you will visit St Anne’s Winery for a tasting of their fabulous table and fortified wines before returning to Emmylou for lunch as you continue downriver towards Deep Creek Marina. In the evening, you can unwind with a fascinating documentary featuring archival footage of the paddlesteamers and communities of the Murray River.

Day 7 - Perricoota Station & Torrumbarry Weir

Amidst this captivating cruise, a mid-morning interlude beckons at the renowned Perricoota Station. Join the skipper for an immersive walking tour enveloped by the rich historical tapestry of Perricoota Station’s heritage.

Continuing the voyage towards Torrumbarry Weir, anticipation mounts for the forthcoming  discoveries. Upon reaching the weir’s shores, partake in a guided walk, traversing the structure and delving into its history and significance. Explore the Interpretive Centre, a treasure trove of knowledge illuminating the intricate details of the Murray Darling Basin and the ingenious weir and lock system, which traces its origins back to 1923.

As the day gracefully transitions into evening, prepare for a splendid conclusion to this memorable journey. Indulge in a delectable final dinner hosted by your Skipper and Engineer, commencing with tantalising pre-dinner canapés and refreshing drinks against the backdrop of the setting sun casting its golden hues over the tranquil weir. As the stars emerge in the night sky, casting their celestial glow, savor every moment of this serene and magical evening aboard the Emmylou.

  • theresec641 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Very very bad beds The tour was good but the cabin is so small and the beds are small and extremely uncomfortable. The worst bed I’ve slept in and I’ve been on holiday in 3rd world countries. Consider your tolerance for discomfort before booking. The crew and the food were excellent. The final morning was awful. They couldn’t wait to get rid of us. They packed our rooms before we even left the boat. Went to clean my teeth after breakfast and the towels and everything were stripped. All things considered the good parts of the tour outnumbered the bad but the discomfort of the cabins is significant and impacts the rest of the tour because I didn’t get enough sleep and my back was aching. • T9373PKtonym 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Appalling Initially on the wrong boat, wrong cabin, booked a balcony with a double bed, on the proud Mary. We got the murray princess, lower level, 2 single beds, smelt terrible. Complained and was told to complain to discovery australia. Looked at the paperwork and they had sent all info to the company with confirmation responses. We did get an upgrade, second floor, 2 single beds again, behind the wheel house, very very noisy, little sleep most nights, intermittent ac, and could hear staff conversations through the vent. Staff were friendly, but, couldn't serve correctly. At times served food to my partner across my meal, mixed up drinks, first night no serving gloves till mid way, served with a gloved finger on the food etc. Lack of entertainment, booring as but serene, slow paced. Some staff smelled of bo, or poorly dressed. No laundry or gym facilities due to a toilet issue a month prior. Other guests had toilet and ac issues form the first day. Advertised as 4 days 3 nights. Arrived first day around 4 pm boarding, departure was 9 am last day.i wouldn't call it 4 days. Read more Written March 4, 2024
  • H3810GAheatherw 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An absolutely beautiful experience My husband and I did the 7 night Upper Murraylands cruise and what a wonderful experience we had. This cruise exceeded our expectations from our lovely stateroom and it's extra trimmings to the wonderful staff who went out of their way to make us feel a part of their Princess family to the amazing and too plentiful food we enjoyed to all the off boat experiences we loved. We've waited many years to do this trip and everything about it was well worth the wait. The boat itself is just beautiful and the slow cruise through a beautiful and ever changing part of South Australia is peaceful and ever so relaxing. We are so proud that we have this in our State. We opted to pay a little more for a Stateroom and are very glad that we did and would really recommend it....we had loads more space, a fridge with mini bar, coffee machine and flowers in the room on arrival. The invitation to pre dinner drinks and nibbles with the Captain one night was also a lovely treat. Thanks Murray Princess for an amazing holiday. Read more Written February 3, 2024

The food was delicious & although the servings were small they suited this couple with small appetites. We enjoyed the ambience in the dining room. One disappointment was the poor state of the armrests on all of the armchairs in the lounges - these should have been replaced & look dirty. All staff were helpful & efficient. • Woodienz 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Enjoyable Trip. We took a seven night cruise as a replacement for one we should have taken in July 2022 when we both contracted COVID at the last minute. I should mention that this was our sixth river cruise taken around the world. We were a little hesitant about the cruise following some negative reviews. However, we had a very enjoyable time and met some great people. Sure the ship is getting on in years and is showing need for maintenance in a few areas. The public rooms were spacious and well looked after. The cabin we had was a double but I wouldn’t recommend that again. Access was only from one side which caused problems during the night if the other person wished to visit the toilet. The bathroom was adequate and the shower was superb. Very hot water and lots of it. Heating was a bit of an issue as the weather was cold during the night. We quickly worked out how to block the vent in the cabin door that was allowing cold air in. We simply blocked it using the spare blanket. The electric blankets worked ok. The heating on the rest of the ship was fine. I can also report that ship did not break down at any point in the cruise. The food was great and not in great portions which suited us. Good variety though. There was plenty at the buffets which I thought were very good. The crew were great. Couldn’t do enough for you. The entertainer was a very talented musician in his thirties and he never stopped. The off ship BBQ at the Woolshed was really good with plenty of food and variety. The off ship activities were good. Had a good time at Morgan meeting the locals and enjoying the history. Most amazing antiques shop there. Was like an Aladdin’s cave. The machinery museum at Waikerie was very interesting with live demonstrations of various old machines. The show at the Woolshed at Sunnydale was really entertaining. Thoroughly enjoyed that. Then meeting the local people at Nguat Nguat Conservation Park and learning from Sam how the local lived was quite enlightening. He brought a sense of humour with great knowledge to his presentation. The enduring memory though were our fellow passengers. The were from all walks of life and happy to communicate freely. Read more Written August 18, 2023
  • trishseide 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Well done Murray Princess A very enjoyable trip. Despite the cold weather it was warm throughout, including in the cabins. The beds were comfortable, the food plentiful and delicious and the drinks were cheaper than your local pub or restaurant. All activities promised were delivered. Dave kept us entertained every night with country music and a little Neil Diamond thrown in for a taste of the Hot August Night cruise. The staff were fabulous and took care to ensure all passengers were happy and safe. Highly recommend although I would do a longer trip next time to take the opportunity to do more off boat activities. Read more Written July 5, 2023

The Best Mississippi River Cruises to Discover America's Heartland

By Jackie Sheckler Finch

Image may contain Boat Transportation Vehicle Land Nature Outdoors Plant Vegetation Tree Woodland and Water

The luxury ships and historic tours are nice, yes. But the real star of Mississippi River cruises has always been the river. There’s nothing quite so Americana as getting to know the many personalities of this 2,350-mile stretch, flowing from northern Minnesota’s Lake Itasca through 10 states until it reaches Louisiana , where the Mississippi River Delta gives way to the Gulf of Mexico.

The slow, meandering journeys of Mississippi River cruises have long proven an ideal way to discover the distinct stories of America’s heartland. In the words of Mark Twain (which no Mississippi River story would be complete without), the towns and cities located on the mighty river's shores are “cheering to the spirit” and “reposeful as a dreamland,” with “nothing to hang a fret or a worry upon.”

The challenge modern travelers now face is when, where, and how to go about this iconic American voyage . Below, see our answers to these frequently asked questions, plus our favorite Mississippi River cruises to book in 2024.

Which cruise lines do Mississippi River cruises?

After American Queen Voyages shut down in February, only two Mississippi River cruise lines currently remain in operation.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, American Cruise Lines (ACL) has a fleet of more than 20 American-built ships sailing across the country and remains family-owned and American-crewed. ACL offers a Mississippi River fleet of three luxurious 180-passenger modern riverboats– American Melody , American Symphony , and American Serenade —plus two classic paddlewheel ships, the 180-passenger American Splendor and the 150-passenger American Heritage.

The new kid on the Mississippi is the Viking Mississippi, a 386-passenger, five-deck vessel that first set sail in September 2022. The cutting-edge cruise is Viking’s first foray in the US, adding to their fleet of more than 90 ocean, river, and expedition vessels navigating the world’s seven continents.

What is the average cost of a Mississippi River cruise?

For an 8- or 9-day cruise, the average cost of a Mississippi River cruise is around $4,000 per person in a stateroom. Although prices might seem high initially, many of these cruises include extras that aren’t always complimentary on ocean cruises such as free WiFi, at least one free shore excursion in every port, paid port taxes and fees, and a pre-cruise hotel stay. Viking offers complimentary beer, wine, and soft drinks with onboard lunch and dinner. Meanwhile, American Cruise Lines offers complimentary beer, wine, cocktails, and soft drinks. Gratuities are also included in American Cruise Lines fares.

What is the best time of year to go on a river cruise?

Spring (late March through mid-June) and autumn (September through November) are the best times of year to go on a river cruise in the US. Spring blossoms add a colorful touch to the shoreline, and you can never go wrong with autumn foliage. The temperatures are mild, if not pleasantly cool, and passengers are eager to welcome a new spring travel season—or to enjoy one last autumn river adventure before winter arrives.

What month is best for a Mississippi River cruise?

If we had to pick just one, September is the best month for a Mississippi River cruise. The weather is usually mild with less likelihood of rain, and autumn colors are beginning to paint the shoreline. Keep in mind, however, that the Mississippi is the fourth largest river in the world—so temperatures any time of year are not going to be the same in warmer Louisiana as they are in cooler Minnesota.

Below, see our favorite Mississippi River cruises to book in 2024, featuring stops in iconic American cities like Nashville , Memphis , and New Orleans .

22-day Mississippi River Odyssey: New Orleans to Red Wing, Minnesota

Enjoy the charms of America’s great river on a journey aboard the Viking Mississippi from New Orleans to Red Wing, departing September 20. Custom built to sail American waters, the vessel features river-facing staterooms with either French or step-out balconies.

Stops include Baton Rouge and St. Francisville in Louisiana; Natchez, Vicksburg, Greenville, and Rosedale in Mississippi; Memphis in Tennessee; Paducah in Kentucky; Cape Girardeau, St. Louis, and Hannibal in Missouri; Burlington, Quad Cities, and Dubuque in Iowa; La Crosse in Wisconsin; and ending in Red Wing, Minnesota.

With so many fascinating shore excursions to choose from, it’s well worth taking time to tour the St. Louis Arch . Opened in 1965, the monument to America’s westward expansion is far more than just a stunning photo by the riverside. Venture underground between the arch legs for a museum. Climb aboard a tram to be transported 630 feet up to the top of America’s tallest monument for some stunning views.

12-day Heart of the Delta: Memphis to New Orleans

The 386-guest Viking Mississippi spans five decks, making it one of the largest passenger vessels on the Mississippi. Inaugurated in 2022, the ship features a modern Scandinavian design with an infinity pool and a two-story Explorers’ Lounge observation area similar to its ocean ships. Directly in front of the Explorer’s Lounge is an expanded outdoor seating area known as The Bow. Three restaurants serve both Southern regional cuisine and international favorites.

The cruise starts in Memphis on November 14 and includes stops in Rosedale, Greenville, Vicksburg, and Natchez in Mississippi as well as St. Francisville, Baton Rouge, and Darrow in Louisiana, ending in New Orleans. The “Mississippi Sings the Blues” shore excursion visits iconic sites along the Mississippi Blues Trail such as historic Dockery Farms, considered the “birthplace of the blues.”

The tour stops in Clarksdale, the fabled “Crossroads” where legend says blues great Robert Johnson reputedly sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his guitar prowess. Stops at the GRAMMY Museum Mississippi and the Delta Blues Museum completes this perfect trip for music lovers.

Nashville TN

9-day Music Cities Cruise: Nashville to Memphis

Music is the main focus of this cruise offered by American Cruise Lines, which begins in Nashville on July 9 with an unforgettable visit to the legendary Grand Ole Opry and ends in Memphis, where passengers will enjoy live music on Beale Street and a tour of Elvis Presley’s Graceland . On board the American Splendor, passengers will enjoy spacious cabins and popular rocking chairs. First inaugurated in 2016 and fully redecorated in 2022, this ship offers the nostalgia of a classic paddlewheeler along with the comfort of modern amenities.

While in Nashville, explore the Johnny Cash Museum, then walk upstairs to The Patsy Cline Museum. Nightly entertainment spotlights the musical heritage of this region as the world’s newest paddlewheeler journeys along the river. The itinerary also includes Clarksville and Dover in Tennessee plus Paducah in Kentucky. In Paducah, stroll along the riverfront with more than 50 life-sized panoramic murals depicting Paducah’s past. Stop by Paducah’s National Quilt Museum, the world’s largest museum devoted to quilt and fiber art.

12-day Mississippi River Gateway Cruise: New Orleans to St. Louis

From the French Quarter in New Orleans to the towering Gateway Arch in St. Louis , this American Heritage cruise lives up to its name. Inaugurated in 2015 and totally redecorated in 2022, the 84-cabin American Heritage is the perfect vessel for this interesting itinerary, its design reminiscent of the days when steamboat paddlewheelers plied the Mississippi in the 1800s.

The 12-day voyage departs from New Orleans on July 2. Ports of call along the way include Baton Rouge in Louisiana; Natchez and Vicksburg in Mississippi; Memphis in Tennessee; and Paducah in Kentucky . An onboard expert shares tales of the importance of steam-driven paddlewheels in establishing riverfront communities along the great Mississippi River.

Step ashore in Natchez and enjoy a cold drink at the Under-the-Hill-Saloon, once one of the rowdiest establishments on the Mississippi River in the 1800s. Legend says that Mark Twain stopped here when he was just another riverman named Samuel Clemens.

9-day Lower Mississippi River Cruise: Memphis to New Orleans

This nine-day American Melody cruise departs Memphis on September 8 and features eight ports of call including Vicksburg and Natchez in Mississippi, and St. Francisville, Baton Rouge, and Houmas House in Louisiana. At Vicksburg Military Park, learn how the 101st Airborne Division got its “Screaming Eagles” nickname, plus the tale of its famous soldier, a young guitar player named Jimi Hendrix. At Houmas House, see the bedroom where Bette Davis stayed to film the 1964 movie Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte . Joan Crawford was the intended co-star but Bette and Joan feuded so Joan quit and Olivia de Havilland replaced her.

Launched in 2021, the five-deck American Melody has 91 staterooms, all with private balconies and full-length sliding glass doors. The ship has several spacious lounges, a fitness center, large dining room, café for casual dining, sun deck, library, and an impressive four-story glass atrium in the center of the ship. The ship’s unusual bow opens and lowers a platform for passengers to easily walk ashore.

9-day Upper Mississippi River Cruise: St. Louis to St. Paul

Board the American Symphony cruise ship to visit Mark Twain’s hometown and experience the real-life inspiration behind Life on the Mississippi, the classic memoir chronicling the author's days on the river as a steamboat pilot.

The 91-cabin American Symphony, recently inaugurated in 2022, has 100% private balcony accommodations and a unique bow that opens with a retractable gangway that can be extended for landings virtually anywhere. The ship also features lounges soaring 40 feet above the water with triple the glass of other riverboats for spectacular views. Comfy deck chairs welcome passengers to enjoy the undeveloped countryside, picturesque islands, and fascinating dams and navigation locks.

Departing September 27, this itinerary features seven ports of call including Muscatine and Dubuque in Iowa, and Winona and Red Wing in Minnesota. In Hannibal, visit the actual home—with a whitewashed Tom Sawyer fence—where Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) grew up. In Dubuque, see the 1989 “Field of Dreams” movie site known for the famous quote, “If you build it, they will come.”

10 Things You Should Know Before Your First European River Cruise

T wenty-fifth wedding anniversary! Where did the time go? And most importantly, what should we do to celebrate? A few days later, with suspiciously perfect timing, a Viking river cruise advertisement dropped into our mailbox.

Two decades ago, we tried a Caribbean ocean cruise — big ship, lots of people, so much food and drink — and never did a second one. But a European river cruise sounded appealing: smooth water, a new city every morning on a small ship with less than 200 passengers, top-notch food and a customizable mix of culture, lectures and activities.

Ten months later, we were flying to Budapest, Hungary to begin our 11-day Passage to Eastern Europe on Viking Cruises. Here are 10 things we learned from our first river cruise:

1. You’ll Wind Up Feeling Young Again

If you are in your 50s and miss that young and spry feeling, you could do worse than go on a river cruise. We knew the average age would likely skew into the 60s, but we did not anticipate being the youngest couple on our ship. Nor did we mind. Being surrounded by seniors in their 70s and 80s having a great time seeing new places was an inspiration for our own future.

2.  You Won’t Find Too Many First-Time Cruisers

Those folks a generation ahead of us have been busy. We didn’t stand out just because of our relative youth, but also because this was our first river cruise. Nearly everybody we met had cruised before — not just with Viking, but other lines around the world as well. Ron, a former Army master sergeant, was on his seventh Viking cruise and even admitted to doing the 15-day Grand European Tour from Amsterdam to Budapest twice.

“I’d do it a third time if they let me do it for free,” he told us.

3. Water Levels May Cause Unexpected Detours

A huge river cruise appeal for my wife was the absence of ocean waves. No waves = no seasickness. But, unlike the ocean, river levels rise and fall. Too high, and the river ships can’t pass under certain bridges. Too low and, like us, the ship may have to stop short of some destinations and passengers will spend extra time on the bus. For us, low water levels triggered shore excursion substitutions in an unexpected Bulgarian city as well as a longer bus ride to Bucharest. Disappointing, but manageable. In other cases, passengers might have to abandon their river ship and bus transfer to an identical one upriver to continue the journey. Be prepared.

4. Every Day Is Casual Day

We were going to be in Europe, cruising on an upscale boat, and our fellow passengers would be older than us; accordingly, my wife and I planned to dress nicely: collared, button-down shirts and sleek sweaters and blouses. Viking emphasizes no formal dinners and a relaxed vibe, but I still almost brought a jacket for the evenings.

I’m glad I didn’t. Our fellow passengers overwhelmingly embraced comfortable casual — bright, plush sneakers; jeans; shorts and even a few Harley T-shirts — it was all okay.  There were definitely people like us, avoiding the jeans and sneakers look, and if you want to dress nicer, go for it, but it’s not necessary.

5.  Embrace Conversation

If you fear initiating new conversations with new people several times a day, a river cruise might intimidate you. Fear not. Most of our experienced river cruiser passengers seemed to crave meeting new people and were easy to chat with.

In our first 24 hours on the ship, I listened to a tale about an encounters with Perth Australia gold miners gone wrong, met a guy who got a Purple Heart when his helicopter crashed in Vietnam, admired the mangled fingers of a 75-year-old New England hockey player and listened to our dinner companion say, “I would not have married my husband if I had to do it again.” With him right there.

How Expedition Cruising Appeals to the Adventurous Traveler

6.  i’ll have both entrees, please. .

Yes, river cruise food is delicious. Nearly every meal featured regional specialties of the neighboring country. A few minutes before dinner seating began, the chief chef would describe his culinary creations to select from that evening. It was like a halftime speech. He’d finish up and we’d all race (or, in some cases, shuffle) out of the lounge to the dining room, pumped up for the coming delicacies.

Yet, as good as the shipboard food may be, take some time to…

7. Eat Locally

Don’t confine yourself to only the refined ship meals. A few steps away from your docked ship you’ll probably find flavorful local food well worth nibbling on. Some of my favorite meals of our trip were a platter of cevapcici eaten under a portrait of Uncle Tito (the Cold War era Yugoslav leader) in Belgrade and some meltingly lovely pumpkin phyllo pastry in Croatia.

8. Pace Yourself

With a new city each day and limited time, you can exhaust yourself trying to do too much. At one point, our new friends, Victor and Leslie, admitted that they signed up for too many excursions. There is only so much anyone can sample in a few hours or even a day, and we accepted that. A travel memoir I found in the ship’s library, Far and Away , gave a satisfying response to that dilemma: “Always leave something for next time, something to tempt you back.”  You’re on a cruise; make some time to simply relax on the sundeck or terrace, admiring the views.

9.  Find a Less-Traveled River

Ever heard of the Iron Gates of the Danube? I hadn’t either. Every passenger was out taking photos as our ship slipped into this dramatic gorge between Serbia and Romania. At one point, the giant face of an ancient Dacian king carved into the rock wall stared back at us.

Other European rivers plying well-traveled countries like Germany, the Netherlands and France host most river cruise traffic, but we delighted in discovering more unfamiliar East European countries. Every day gave us new stories and perspectives, often containing history that we’d never heard of. Nor was all of this history ancient. On successive days we got thoughtful perspectives from a local Croatian tour guide and then her Serbian counterpart on the 1990s Balkan War. When choosing your cruise itinerary, consider the lesser-known places.

10. Cabin Class Choices Matter

After choosing a cruise date and itinerary, you pick your cabin class. I agonized over that. Budget limitations dictated the cheapest, er, “most affordable” cabin for us, down on the lower deck and featuring only a narrow window just above the waterline. My online research emphasized that most of our cabin time would be at night when it was dark anyway.  Moreover, even during daylight hours, the ship would often be parked next to a dock or sandwiched between other cruise ships with someone else’s window inches away.

All of that was indeed true. And once on board, it was obvious that even the most spacious cabins could not compare to the nearly 360-degree views from the outdoor terrace and top sundeck where passengers gathered in the sunny afternoons. Still, I would have enjoyed more window space in our stateroom. Next cruise maybe I’ll spring for the fancy veranda cabin.
