Louis Vuitton has launched its 2024 Cruise campaign, transporting us to the picturesque shores of Italy’s Isola Bella. The campaign stars British actress Emma Laird ( A Haunting Of Venice ) — a new addition to the brand’s roster of famous faces, following in the footsteps of stars like  Sophie Turner  and  Phoebe Dynevor . 

Lensed by photographer Jamie Hakesworth, the Louis Vuitton Cruise 2024 campaign showcases its floaty and feminine styles alongside the the sundrenched shores and baroque architecture of Isola Bella.

The campaign evokes a sense of fantasy and mystery inherent in the mythology of Isola Bella. The magical and unique island belonged to the Borromeo family for 500 years, who built the grand palazzo upon its shores. The scenery features a palace rising from the isle, surrounded by emerald foliage of the exquisite gardens.

The unique setting provided the backdrop to the Maison’s Cruise show in May of this year with its rousing, dreamy stylistic interpretations inspired by aquatic tales. 

For those fortunate enough to attend the Louis Vuitton Cruise runway shows, travelling with Nicolas Ghesquière on his global cruise collection unveilings has become the ultimate fashion voyage. Whether you’re sitting front row in person, or watching from the comfort of your home, it’s escapism at its most luxurious.

The aquatic themed Cruise Collection was set to be unveiled in the picturesque, terraced gardens of Isola Bella with 1000 VIP guests, including celebrities such as Cate Blanchett, Samara Weaving , Emma Stone, Phoebe Dynevor, Oprah, Alicia Vikander, Gemma Chan and Jennifer Connelly , arriving by boat to sit alfresco and view the collection by the sea. Unfortunately, wild weather saw the team at Louis Vuitton swiftly relocate the runway within the waterproof walls of Isola Bella.

marie claire editor, Nicky Briger, was in attendance and reports, “Relentless rain couldn’t dampen the unveiling of Louis Vuitton’s Cruise Collection on Italy’s magnificent Lake Maggiore. The show was supposed to be staged among the terraced gardens of Isola Bella, but Mother Nature had other plans. Organisers quickly shifted hundreds of A-list guests, inside the frescoed walls of the island’s 17th century palace for Nicholas Ghesquière’s sea-inspired collection.”

It’s a big moment for mermaids, and this collection will ensure the sirens of the sea remain at the forefront of style with these magical pieces. Had the show gone to plan, Ghesquière explained: “We started with the idea that the girls were coming from the water, like mermaids of the lake, and they’re transforming to something else.”

Ironically, pieces in neoprene scuba gear that would’ve withstood the weather were featured with water droplet embellishments and collars inspired by fins. Models wore King Triton crowns and feathered headpieces. Mermaid scale sequin skirts were paired with neoprene tanks and naval jackets, perhaps an ode to a siren and her sailor prey.

Fluttering gowns in pastel hues finished the show, with their structured swinging hems and pouf sleeves, reminiscent of Ariel’s seriously chic sisters and sea creatures. The collection, with its high drama take on what lies beneath the sea, put any talk of a return to normcore to rest. Ghesquière’s underwater fantasy world is enough to make Ariel keep her fins.

Isola Bella on Lake Maggiore served as site and inspiration for Nicolas Ghesquière’s first presentation in Italy.

Italy’s Lake Maggiore has always been the more low-key neighbor to the celebrity-filled Lake Como, just as beautiful, but less noisy, more understated, the coded luxury equivalent to Como’s logomania, perhaps. But this weekend, the storied Isola Bella, located in Lake Maggiore just south of the Swiss Alps, dipped its toe into the world of celebrities, high fashion, and flashing cameras, as it hosted Louis Vuitton’s 2024 cruise show. On Wednesday evening, Nicolas Ghesquière invited guests of the house to a presentation at the island’s palace, owned by the dynastic Borromeo family since the 16th century. The plan was for guests to watch as models stalked through the pebbled paths of its baroque gardens that Edith Wharton once compared to a Renaissance poem. Unfortunately, mother nature had other ideas, and downpours moved the presentation inside where it could be enjoyed without the threat of rain.

Ironically, much of Ghesquière’s collection was created to withstand the exact weather that plagued the presentation. Inspired by the show’s setting, the designer presented an array of aquatic looks, many rendered in waterproof neoprene. The models called to mind sea creatures emerging from Lake Maggiore, with pleated fins protruding from underarms and necks, and goggles ready for deep sea diving. Some showed off elaborate headpieces of feathers and King Triton crowns, while others donned their underwater finds with the help of jewel-decorated tops. Per the show notes, the offering’s aim is to “give rise to contemporary tales, populated by drifting creatures that abandon aquatic dwellings for the discovery of terrestrial wonders.”And indeed, one couldn’t help but consider Ariel and her six sisters as models in sheer dresses appeared on the runway to close out the show, their swinging skirts providing lightness to the collection.

Per usual, celebrity guests were in abundance, undeterred by the rain. After showing off many sustainable Louis Vuitton looks at Cannes last week, Cate Blanchett took the short flight over to Northern Italy and attended the show in a knee-length gray dress with a plunging neckline and a completely open back. She was joined by other Louis Vuitton ambassadors, including Alicia Vikander, Emma Stone, and Jennifer Connelly. The most unexpected guest, however, was Oprah, who arrived in a belted off-white shirt dress with matching pants, and posed for photos alongside Gayle King and Ava Duvernay.

A pre-taped video allowed those not in attendance to experience what could have been—a mythical fashion display among the historic Borromeo gardens—but the reality proved the collection is just as amphibious in nature to the creatures that inspired the clothing. They work by the water, on land, and upon many a future red carpet as well.

From the movie stars who attended to the fairytale ensembles sent down the runway, here's everything you need to know about the Louis Vuitton Cruise 2024 collection.

The Front Row

Always one to attract the world's biggest stars, Louis Vuitton hosted plenty of A-listers at their Italian show. Emma Stone, in a chic cut-out two piece, Bridgerton star Phoebe Dynevor, James Bond actor Lea Seydoux, and none other than Cate Blanchett all took a break from Cannes Film Festival for the fashionable event.

The Setting

On the idyllic Italian Lake Maggiore sits Isola Bella, one of the Borromean Islands. Owned by the Borromeo family, the island is made up of a small fishing village, a palace and an Italianate hanging garden, where the Louis Vuitton Cruise 2024 show was initially held. The garden is said to be full of rare plants, with divine views over the lake on which is sits. However, when the heavens opened, the live show was moved into the (much drier, but equally beautiful) Palazzo Borremo's salon.

'Surprisingly, Louis Vuitton has never shown in Italy,' Ghesquière said. 'I wanted a special place, something new. Also: different architecture, a different context. The paradoxical idea of a botanical cruise really intrigued me.'

The Clothes

Leaning heavily into Mermaidcore, Ghesquière presented an aquatic-themed collection, reflecting not only the lake surrounding the setting, but the weather that almost stymied the day. Featuring plenty of practical neoprene, fantastical headdresses and mystical palette skirts, the show note explained Ghesquière hoped to: 'give rise to contemporary tales, populated by drifting creatures that abandon aquatic dwellings for the discovery of terrestrial wonders.'

Louis Vuitton takes to the azure waters of Lake Maggiore in Isola Bella for their Cruise 2024 presentation. 

Isola Bella is the picturesque island that sits between Lombardy and Ticino amidst the vast expanse of Lake Maggiore. Its name directly translates to “beautiful island,” making it a sweet destination for French luxury house Louis Vuitton ’s cruise collection.

The dizzying spells of the California deserts inspired Nicolas Ghesquière ’s last cruise collection, and the LV Cruise 2023 woman was clad in sun-ray-reflecting metallics, coming down the runway from the line of the horizon. 

Meanwhile, the Isola Bella setting is beautiful in its ephemerality, like most things in nature, and Princess Marina Borromeo calls it a “fragile place.” Louis Vuitton cites a line from Ernest Hemingway ’s A Farewell To Arms , in which he writes, “I rowed across to Isola Bella and went close to the walls, where the water deepened sharply, and you saw the rock wall slanting down in the clear water.”

Perhaps the Cruise 2024 woman is one of subtle elegance, one who finds strength in vulnerability.

Louis Vuitton is heading to a small, storied island in Italy for its cruise show in May — after an important pit stop in Seoul at the end of April to parade its pre-fall collection, WWD has learned.

The luxury powerhouse and Nicolas Ghesquière , its artistic director of women’s collections since 2013, have a history of selecting architectural marvels, some with spectacular gardens, for destination cruise shows. It found both attributes in spades in Isola Bella, a celebrated example of Italian Baroque style that has been owned by the Borromeo family for some four centuries.

Embellished over centuries, Isola Bella today boasts the Palazzo Borromeo, a 20-room palace furnished in Baroque style and appointed with 130 important Italian paintings.

Meanwhile, the gardens are considered an outstanding example of Italian Baroque style, at the center of which stands the Teatro Massimo, a monument of stepped terraces decorated with obelisks and statues.

Over the years, Ghesquière has staged cruise shows for Vuitton at the groovy Bob Hope Estate by John Lautner in Palm Springs, California; Brazil’s futuristic MAC Niterói by Oscar Niemeyer; Kyoto, Japan’s, Miho Museum by Ieoh Ming Pei; the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul de Vence, France, by Josep Lluís Sert, Dani Karavan’s Axe Majeur near Paris, and the TWA Flight Center at JFK Airport in New York by Eero Saarinen.

The designer helped kicked off a rush to California for fashion shows last May when he staged Vuitton’s cruise show at the Salk Institute in La Jolla.

Meanwhile, Vuitton’s pre-fall showing in Seoul is scheduled for April 29, with the venue still under wraps.

It marks the first time the brand will stage a fashion show for a pre-fall collection, and it will be the first official event in South Korea attended by Ghesquière.

Dior, which like Vuitton is controlled by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, recently began staging destination fashion shows for its pre-fall collections. Dior’s longtime chief executive officer Pietro Beccari took over the management helm of Vuitton last month and has wasted no time putting more spotlights on its women’s fashion business.

The pre-fall collection will be available in Vuitton stores worldwide from May 19.

Meanwhile, Vuitton’s cruise collection will be delivered to stores in November.

Europe’s big luxury brands have all resumed staging itinerant fashion shows for cruise, with Gucci heading to Seoul, Chanel to Los Angeles, and Max Mara to Stockholm. Dior has yet to announce its destination.

The fashion pack headed to Lake Maggiore to check out a mermaid-inspired collection

Unfortunately, bad weather hindered the house's plans. The show had been set to take place in an outside setting on Isola Bella, a beautiful island in the middle of the lake. Instead, the show was staged inside on the mainland, where the likes of Emma Stone, Alicia Vikander and Cate Blanchett were in attendance.

Luckily though, models had walked the original location before the rain set in, so the collection was photographed on the intended catwalk, which was a clear inspiration for many of the pieces. It featured sculptural sleeves, aquatic colours and mermaid-inspired touches.

Watch Louis Vuitton’s Cruise 2024 Womenswear Show, Live From Isola Bella In Italy

Louis vuitton is delivering a dosage of 'la dolce vita' from lake maggiore.

Louis Vuitton is synonymous with two things: preeminent French luxury and being the forefather of covetable luggage. Since the brand’s origins in the early 19th Century, the maison has been entrenched in codes of travel, so it only makes sense that the luxuriate is packing up their monogrammed damier canvas trunks and preparing for their next voyage on their wanderlust-inducing world tour.

The destination? Isola Bella, a private and serene island positioned in the middle of Lake Maggiore in Northern Italy.

The dust has only just settled under the Jamsugyo Bridge in Seoul—the location of the label’s Pre-Fall 2023 collection presentation—but the style set are already looking across the Mediterranean from Cannes and the Côte d’Azur to the Tyrrhenian Sea for their next sartorial adventure.

On May 24, the maison will unviel their upcoming Cruise 24 collection on the grounds of the Baraqoue marvel—a location both transcended in time and suspended over the balmy Alp-flanked water.

On the grounds of the Palazzo Borromeo and in the island’s Italianate garden, Nicolas Ghesquière will present his latest offering for the maison, a collection that will no doubt honour the rich aristocratic heritage of the islets and the untouched, isolated location Isola Bella offers.

Louis Vuitton’s Cruise 23 show, hosted at the Salk Institute in San Diego, gathered the maison’s legions of ambassadors and friends of the house, so we have no doubts this season will produce the same standard of sartorial attendance, with the likes of Zendaya and Ana de Armas perched front row.

For the Cruise 2024 fashion show, Louis Vuitton presented its women’s collection in a majestic setting on the Italian island of Isola Bella. After Palm Springs (2015), San Diego (2022), Rio de Janeiro (2016) and Kyoto (2017), the Maison continued to explore new horizons at a wondrous and dreamlike location. The collection channels the singular beauty of this lush, baroque setting.

Faithful to Nicolas Ghesquière’s singular universe, the wardrobe celebrated an eclectic, futurist and often fantastical style. The looks delved into aquatic folklore with silhouettes like fairytale figures. Neoprene was tailored into winged wetsuits or patterned like seaweed. Sequined ornaments became scales, water droplet embellishments joined embroidered shells and collars morphed into fins. A baroque feel was omnipresent. Some of the models wore headdresses crafted by a Rome atelier specialized in film and opera accessories.

The pastel color palette and plays of materials – silk jacquard, cashmere, jersey and organza – provided a narrative for the transformation embodied in multiple stylistic ideas. Urban allure cohabits with a formal eveningwear vibe.

The characters in aquatic-themed looks continually transformed for a collection that flows between familiar and exceptional, ordinary and extraordinary.
