27 Cheap destinations for 2024 with great weather in June

June is traditionally the first big vacation month of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, but there are still loads of excellent places to go with good weather and affordable prices. Actually, June can be an ideal choice for those with time off because so many Europeans spread all over the world during their more popular holiday months of July and August. While the beach areas in Europe and North America tend to be crowded and expensive in June, there are many great options not too far away that are still cheap and have great weather.

You’ll find great choices in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia as well, all in affordable price categories. If you are more sure of where in the world you’d like to go you might instead consult our list of the best European destinations to visit in June or the best Asian destinations to visit in June .

My new video showing many of the places below

Over on my new Youtube channel I recently made a video showing 10 of the places on this list with great video footage and some additional reasons you might go along with cheap hotel recommendations in each place. I’d appreciate anyone who watches and subscribes.

The Americas

In North America, June is obviously the start of summer, but most of the north isn’t really cheap enough to make this list. In South America it’s winter in most places, so only the Tropical cities are worth a look for a good-weather bargain at this time of year. The hot countries in June are mostly in the north at this time of year.

The Caribbean

cheap travel destinations june 2023

If you are looking for a high-rise resort on a beach then you’ll definitely want to look along the main Hotel Zone in Cancun itself. But if you would prefer to stay in an actual town with dozens of nearby choices of local restaurants and bars, then you should head to Playa del Carmen or even the island of Cozumel just across the water. They will all be bargains in June, and the sea breezes will keep you cool during the times you aren’t in your air-conditioned hotel room. Tulum, which is just south of Playa del Carmen, is a trendy new destination for creative types. In fact, there are 9 distinct areas in and near Cancun where you can stay and we have created a quick guide for choosing where to stay in Cancun based on your preferences.

 • Family-friendly resorts are available for families with kids

cheap travel destinations june 2023

This area gets crowded with European visitors during July and August, and most of the resorts here are owned by Spanish (or at least European) hotel companies. So June is the perfect month for great weather and modest prices for an all-inclusive resort. The flights to the new and efficient airport here should be well priced this month as well. Punta Cana also tops our list of the best Caribbean destinations for families with children because there are so many excellent and affordable resorts that have water parks and kids clubs.

Montego Bay, Jamaica

 • June avg low: 76°F/24°C
 • June avg precip: 1.5″/3.8cm

Montego Bay highlights

 • Sandy beaches at most resorts, although it’s important to check at cheaper places
 • Excellent sunsets in Negril and other west-facing beaches
 • Music and nightlife for those brave enough to leave the resorts, and great parties inside the resorts
 • The only large Caribbean island where all the locals speak English

cheap travel destinations june 2023

If Montego Bay itself doesn’t sound ideal then you might instead consider Negril or Ocho Rios , both of which are about 90 minutes away from Montego Bay Airport. Ocho Rios has a similar strip of large resorts along its coast, with some interesting nearby sights and attractions. Negril, on the other hand, is best for smaller beach hotels along 7-Mile Beach, where there are many small restaurants and bars to choose from nearby each property. This is where you go to find the old-school super chilled out Jamaica.

Los Cabos, Mexico

 • Amazing marina area with outstanding shopping, restaurants, and shops
 • A great mix of traditional and all-inclusive resorts
 • Mild evenings in winter so you aren’t sweating day AND night
 • Excellent beaches at most hotels and resorts

cheap travel destinations june 2023

It’s worth noting that the Los Cabos area is made up of two cities and a stretch of beach between them. Cabo san Lucas is the western town built around the large and gorgeous marina, and San Jose del Cabo is the eastern town closer to the airport where things are more spread out. There are loads of great beach resorts in the area, including many luxurious ones in between the towns. If you prefer nightlife and shopping you’ll want to stay in the Cabo san Lucas area, and families are probably better off almost anywhere else.

Mexico City, Mexico

 • June avg high: 76°F/24°C

 • Modern culture and shopping districts that are surprisingly posh
 • Excellent food (not just Tex-Mex) at appealing prices
 • Pyramids and other nearby Aztec ruins that are easy to reach

cheap travel destinations june 2023

Flights from the US and Canada tend to be cheap, the city center area is very nice in many places, and prices are very low compared to almost anywhere else. This is a very underrated destination that is far safer than many cities in the US, and the mild June weather is a perfect reason to visit. In other words, Mexico City is not one of the hottest places in June, but it’s pleasantly mild and much nicer than you might expect.

Cartagena, Colombia

 • Gorgeous and historic colonial wall town center
 • Good beaches and other nearby sights
 • Great food and drinks that are surprisingly cheap
 • A unique atmosphere that is very different from the large Caribbean islands
 • Nearby islands, water sports, and other activities

cheap travel destinations june 2023

The winter is probably the best time to visit, but it’s really quite nice all year round, and still very cheap as well. If you like culture, history, and gorgeous Colonial architecture you’ll want to stay in the walled city area. But if you mainly want to relax on the beach you’ll want to stay in the Bocagrande area just to the west of the walled city. There are quite a few all-inclusive resorts in Cartagena as well and the prices are very appealing, but food and drinks in the city and at beach restaurants are pretty cheap as well so you may not want to commit to staying in one place for your entire trip.

 • 3-star hotels from: US$38 per night for two people
 • 4-star hotels from: US$86 per night for two people

 • Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf cable car are amazing in person, if a bit expensive

 • Excellent-value smaller hotels in the nicer beach areas

cheap travel destinations june 2023

Rio and the rest of Brazil had becomes somewhat expensive a few years back, but the currency here has come back down and now it’s definitely a bargain again. The chain hotels on Copacabana and Ipanema beaches are still pretty expensive although for security reasons they might be worth the splurge. Still, if you look for smaller family-run hotels and restaurants, Rio can be as affordable as it is beautiful, and it’s really beautiful.

The temperatures in Lisbon during June are pretty much perfect for climbing up and down its seven hills without making a mess of yourself. It’s hard to make a case for flying a long way to visit Portugal alone, although there’s actually plenty to see and do, plus the wonderful Algarve region in the south, so this is usually an add-on to some trips of Spain. If you are on the fence, definitely take the leap and you won’t regret it.

 • Royal Palace complex

 • Tapas bars, where you get free snacks with each drink ordered
 • Excellent nightlife that draws people from all over the world

cheap travel destinations june 2023

The nightlife in Madrid is also famous, and in June things are really going strong. You’ve probably heard that people eat dinner late here and then young people head to the clubs after midnight. Even if you aren’t one to stay up that late, you’ll find plenty to see and do here well into the evening. The siesta thing is still observed in Madrid, so be prepared to relax indoors or find other things to do while most businesses are closed from 2 PM until 4 PM or so.

 • La Rambla pedestrian zone
 • Sandy beaches located within the city
 • Marina complex with great food, shopping, and activities
 • Nightlife that rivals Madrid and is world-class

cheap travel destinations june 2023

It’s another that may not be super cheap, but it’s very reasonable compared to the rest of Western Europe, and definitely worth a visit at least once in your life for the unusual architecture alone. It’s worth noting that Barcelona has become so crowded in peak months in recent years that the city government is trying to curtail some tourism. June is a busy month, so be prepared for crowds.

 • Arguably the world’s best beer that is also very cheap (if you avoid the tourist zones)

cheap travel destinations june 2023

Hotels here can be expensive, especially if you stay in or near the historic center, but the public transportation here is cheap and efficient so saving money by staying a little away from the river is often the best choice. Beer here is famously good and cheap, although it’s only cheap at places where locals outnumber the tourists, and those can be hard to find in the Old City, which is another good reason to stay a bit on the outskirts.

 • 3-star hotels from: US$87 per night for two people
 • 4-star hotels from: US$111 per night for two people

In fact, Krakow is so pleasant and affordable that it can be a good place for a longer stay if you are touring Europe. You can see the main sights in 3 days or so, and that allows you to slow down and relax if you want to catch your breath before exploring more expensive cities like Paris or London.

You can’t really say the same thing about London or Paris, where the attractions can really take a toll on the budget.

 • 3-star hotels from: US$68 per night for two people
 • 4-star hotels from: US$112 per night for two people

The area does get crowded in summer, but not quite so bad until July and August when all the Germans and northern Europeans move in for a month at a time.

There aren’t many cultural sights here, but it’s a great place to relax without breaking the bank. If you don’t speak much Spanish, then you’ll want to head to the southern towns of Los Cristianos and Playa de la Americas, which are always packed with Brits and Swedes. It’s also worth noting that Tenerife is only one of the Canary Islands and you can often find even better deals and sometimes smaller crowds on some of the others including Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and La Palma.

This question comes up a lot because almost every good place in Asia has rainy or super hot weather in June. The exception is Bali, so it’s the place I recommend most for June. It’s just south of the equator so June is the driest month of the year and it’s a bit cooler than normal as well. If you want to be a bit more adventurous you might go to Lombok instead, which is the island next to Bali and it’s less crowded and a bit cheaper.

In fairness, Bali is very crowded in June because of the nice weather conditions (and that it’s hot and wet everywhere else), but there are areas in Bali that are much less crowded than others. I’ve just updated my list of the best Asia destinations in June , which can give you some other ideas. Let me know if you’ve got any other questions. -Roger

June is a spectacular month to travel, especially if you're looking to score a good deal on your vacation. From well-priced resorts in the Caribbean to cheap flights to European destinations, there is a bevy of ways to protect your pocketbook during this pre-summer gem.

Yes, you might run into some rain and a few uber-hot and humid days in more tropical destinations , but if you're willing to sweat it out (literally) you're in for a super affordable trip.

June in other regions, like Canada and Australia , presents travelers with comfortable temperatures and beautiful scenery. Beating the summertime rush to hot spots in the Northern Hemisphere helps keep tourist levels almost as low as the prices you'll find on off-season transportation and accommodations.

To help plan your thrifty travels, use our list of the best places to travel in June.

1. Las Vegas, Nevada

2. cancun, mexico, 3. costa rica, 4. krakow, poland, 5. san juan, puerto rico, 7. fort lauderdale, florida, 8. beijing, china, 9. buenos aires, argentina, 10. dominican republic, 11. australia, 12. grenada, 13. tenerife, canary islands, spain, 14. dubai, united arab emirates, map of cheap places to travel in june.

Las Vegas at night

Yes, it is quite hot in Las Vegas in June, but since it is the off-season, you will be able to cool off in the swanky hotel room you were able to nab for a great price. During June, you'll save on flights, too. With fewer tourists heading here, and plenty of flight options available, you should be able to find rates for less than $200 round-trip.

While you should expect ridiculous temperatures (we're talking triple digits), June visitors can take advantage of the many indoor activities offered for a reasonable price at this time of year. During the day, take advantage of the dry heat and fewer crowds to hike the Red Rock Canyon or get on the water with a boat tour of Hoover Dam .

Stroll The Forum shops along the Strip and get the best vantage point of the Las Vegas lights from on top of the Eiffel Tower at the Paris Las Vegas or take a gondola ride at The Venetian Resort . Early morning is the best time to be active if you're hoping to stave off the afternoon scorchers.

To save even more money on your vacation, you can just relax by the hotel pool and enjoy the discounted buffets.

Aerial view of Cancun

Summer is the off-peak season in Cancun, which makes it one of the cheapest places to visit in June. Airfares can be almost 50 percent less than during the peak-travel season in the winter months. Resorts and hotels also slash rates significantly to fill rooms. Many resorts will throw in credits to use for spa services, on-site restaurants, and free nights to entice summer travelers.

What's the catch? It's hot in Mexico in June, but since you are by the ocean, it's easy to cool off if that means saving hundreds of dollars for an affordable vacation. June is also on the front end of the hurricane season, which lasts through November, but most storms hit on the tail end of the season.

You can use your Cancun vacation to hit the pristine beaches with fewer people and take advantage of the many water sports available. Maybe this is the year you learn how to parasail. If you feel like getting out of the beach chair, you can always visit the Chichén Itzá Mayan archaeological site or the ruins in Tulum .

Keel-billed toucan in Costa Rica

Prices in Costa Rica are at their lowest this time of year, and since the conversion rate is favorable, especially to the US dollar, it makes even more sense to travel here in June. The all-inclusive resorts are always a good option, especially if you're traveling with the family.

The rainforests, which the region is known for, benefit from the high humidity and rainfall in June, so you will not miss any of the adventure by coming in the off-season. Besides the breathtaking rainforests and an abundance of wildlife, like wild monkeys and birds, Costa Rica has stunning beaches and a multitude of fascinating tourist attractions to enjoy.

There are many types of outdoor adventures to experience to take full advantage of your visit, from ziplining through the forest canopy to trekking the volcanoes in the region. Since there are fewer tourists in June, check with your hotel or resort to see where you can get additional discounts on tours.

Castillo San Felipe del Morro in Old San Juan

You will always get the best rates when destinations are in the shoulder or off-peak season. That's why you need to visit San Juan, Puerto Rico in June. The beginning of the off-season, June is the month you'll begin to see hotel rates decline, and they will continue to fall throughout the month. With multiple flights to and from San Juan, it's easy to keep an eye out for bargains or last-minute deals from major airlines.

Tourists also begin to decline in June, which means the area's beautiful beaches will have plenty of room to allow you to stretch out. Speaking of beaches, San Juan is home to some of the best beaches in Puerto Rico , so be sure to pack sunscreen and a hat—you'll be spending a lot of time by the shore.

Moraine Lake, Banff National Park

Almost anywhere in Canada is going to be popular for summer vacations, but if that is your window to travel and you want to include locations like Lake Louise in Banff National Park , Athabasca Falls in Jasper National Park, or the remarkable falls in Niagara Falls to your Canada itinerary , June is the month to do it. In Canada, children are generally in school until the last week in June and prices tend to remain low until school holidays begin.

Rates for things like airfare and hotels won't be uber cheap, but they will be less expensive in June since it is technically the shoulder season. You'll notice a large hike in fees as soon as July hits.

The price factor for Canada also has to include your ability to see the country's most popular tourist attractions, including some of Canada's best national parks . Winter months might be a cheaper time to travel, but if you cannot visit the sites then it defeats the purpose of saving money. June in Canada offers the best option for discounted rates and decent weather.

Fort Lauderdale

June is the off-season in Fort Lauderdale. It's also the start of the hurricane season, but if you pack accordingly, you can score big on airline and hotel discounts for summer travel to the city. Since Fort Lauderdale is a popular cruise port in Florida, there are plenty of flights available, with schedules and rates that can fit your budget.

Fort Lauderdale is a fun waterside community that suits both beachgoers and those looking for some time to explore a new destination. While Fort Lauderdale Beach will take center stage during your vacation, you can also book some time to take in the wildlife and scenery at the Sawgrass Recreation Park and plan an airboat ride. To cool off from the sizzling June temperatures, you can hop on board a sightseeing boat tour of the city.

The Forbidden City in Beijing

If you have been wanting to visit China's most exciting sights but are deterred by the sticker price to do so, a June trip to Beijing might be of interest. This month is in the shoulder season, so hotel rates are excellent, and flight deals can be found. It is possible to stay in a four-star hotel in Beijing in June for less than 80 USD a night.

Another detail to consider for June travel to Beijing is that there are no domestic holidays, which means tourists coming into the city from other parts of China will be fewer. With lower costs in June, you might consider booking a few extra days in Beijing to spend more time at The Great Wall of China and other tourist attractions like the Forbidden City , Tiananmen Square , and strolling through the narrow streets of Nanluoguxiang .

If you have more time, why not head out on a day trip during your vacation? With all that money you've saved, a visit to the Great Wall of China and The Summer Palace is in order.

National Congress building in Buenos Aires, Argentina

June is the driest month in Buenos Aires, which is reason enough to visit at this time. During the early winter in this South American beauty, travelers will enjoy mild temperatures when traipsing thorough town, taking in some of Argentina's most popular tourist sites, like Casa Rosada in Plaza de Mayo and the Recoleta Cemetery .

In addition to a break from the heat (highs hover around the low 60s), visitors in June will garner fab savings on everything from airfare to hotels. You'll be looking at around 25 percent off the highest rates on hotel rooms as compared to the high season.

The second largest city in South America, this Argentinian hub is packed with fun things to do at all times of year, but enjoying them in June allows guests to do so without elbowing their way through crowds or dropping wads of cash. With extra time on your hands, and bonus cash from all those savings, you should consider taking an exciting day trip to see popular beauties like Igazú Falls .

Beautiful beach in Punta Cana

Summer (including June) offers the best deals to the popular vacation destination of the Dominican Republic. This is when the Caribbean island resorts slash their multi-day all-inclusive rates.

Punta Cana and Puerto Plata are full of all-inclusive resorts that will often help you package your flights, too, which can save you even more money. These popular all-inclusive resorts are designed to draw tourists all year, and they go the extra mile in June to fill their rooms. Since dozens of airlines service the island, you can also find cheap flights.

Since the resorts offer plenty to do, from water sports and private beaches to spa services, you never have to leave the property. If you do want to plan more in your itinerary than just the beautiful beaches , you can book a boat tour or snorkeling trip. There are also a variety of golf courses, animal parks, and swimming-with-dolphin excursions available on the island.

Sydney Harbour

Travel to Australia can be hot and expensive, but if you book a vacation in June, you will catch a break on both fronts because it is wintertime in the country. You can catch about a 30 percent drop in rates on hotels and flights to Australia in June, and experience the country with more comfortable temperatures than you would if visiting during the high-season months.

Once you narrow down whether to visit the pretty beaches or exciting attractions in Sydney , the museums in Darwin , Melbourne's shops and gardens , or a combination of several cities and destinations further afield, you can fill in your Australian itinerary with some of the festivals and attractions in those regions.

There are many annual music festivals and winter festivals happening, so Australia is as thriving with things to do in the winter as it is in the summer; it's just a tad cooler.

No matter where you plan to travel in Australia, you will likely go through Sydney and should spend a few days there to see the stunning Sydney Harbour Bridge and the iconic Sydney Opera House .

St. George's, Grenada

The lush Caribbean island of Grenada is a stunning paradise getaway, but June makes it an affordable one, too, compared to other times of the year. A Grenada vacation in June will cost you about 50 percent less, so you can use that money to spend while visiting the island's famous spice plantations and staying in one of the plush resorts.

You can easily find three- and four-star hotels and resorts for less than 100 USD a night, and many direct flights are discounted also. During the tourist dip in June in Grenada, you will also find offers like hotel room upgrades, discounts for families, spa services, and discounted excursions like snorkeling that will add to the savings.

Grenada is an underrated vacation spot that is often overshadowed by its more popular competitors like the island of Barbados . Grenada has incredible dive sites and 45 beaches to soak up the summer sun. Grand Anse Beach is the most popular, but you can try a different one every day if you like.

While the water and natural environment are the top attractions in Grenada there are other tourist adventures on the island, like Market Square for shopping and the charming downtown of St. George's neighborhood.

Las Teresitas beach, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

Tenerife is the sunny destination of choice for Europeans looking for an affordable beach vacation. That said, the cost of getting to this Canary Island locale and the price to stay in its most popular resorts can be high during the popular summer and winter seasons. That's why traveling here during June is your best bet for a cheap beach holiday.

In June, you can expect warm temperatures, with highs in the mid- to upper-80s and very little rain. With European schools still in session, the beaches will be free from most travelers, especially if you visit in the first week or two of the month, and you won't have to fight for space on a whale-watching cruise. Spend the money you save on some tasty tapas at a local restaurant.

Want to book a cheap vacation you'll never forget? Why not plan your wedding here? Tenerife is one of the best places to get married in the world .

Dubai at dusk

Let's face it, Dubai is never going to be "cheap." A glitzy Middle Eastern destination peppered with ornate skyscrapers, massive shopping malls, and jewelry stores aplenty, this unique international locale is a must-see, and June proffers the cheapest opportunity to visit.

A June vacation can net you up to 70 percent off rates at some of Dubai's best beach resorts. And, as a major international business hub, flights are easy to book, and airfare deals are not hard to find.

The Dubai city skyline is as spectacular as its turquoise waters. With the cash you save on lodging and airfare, you can splurge in one (or many, many more) of the 1,300 stores in the Dubai Mall . Be sure to book some time in your itinerary to visit Dubai's top tourist attractions , like the spectacular Burj Al Arab building and relax on one of the city's best beaches , like the public Jumeirah Beach . At nearly 830 meters tall, the Burj Kalifa is unmissable.

The best places to visit in June 2024

Where to go in June 2024 Sicily

June is the perfect time to explore Sicily © Maremagnum / Getty Images

When the halfway point of the year hits, it’s the perfect time to be out on your next adventure. Sitting pretty just outside of soaring peak-season prices, June’s sunny summer days in the northern hemisphere are ideal for exploration. In the southern hemisphere, June brings the dry season and incredible opportunities to embrace nature.

Want to find the perfect destination for your mid-year break? Here are the best places to go in June.

Where are the best places to travel to in June for relaxation?

Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique

Why now? Dive and snorkel clear, warm, turquoise waters.

Are these the most beautiful tropical islands on Earth? While the Bazaruto Archipelago faces stiff competition from other Indian Ocean destinations (and Mozambique ’s own Quirimbas Archipelago ), when you wriggle your toes into the silky sand on a glorious June morning (the start of the dry season), or gaze through your mask at impossibly colorful reef fish, and maybe a humpback whale migrating past, and they could stake a fair claim.

Much of this chain of five islands off Mozambique’s southeastern coast is protected as a national park, conserving dolphins, dugongs, sea turtles and around 2000 fish species. Oh, and Nile crocodiles – but perhaps you’re not so keen to see those… This is a paradise for divers, but also for anyone seeking a truly barefoot beach holiday.

Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Why now? Relax in a tropical paradise in the balmiest season.

Blue, turquoise, azure, teal, indigo…there aren’t enough words to describe the hues of the Pacific Ocean around French Polynesia on a clear, calm, sunny day. And there are plenty of those in June, the start of the driest season, when the main island of Bora Bora and its motu (ringing islands) bask in temperatures of around 25–30°C (77–86°F). This is the stuff of movies, with luxurious resorts perched over the crystal waters, shaded by swaying palms – and you need to be a film star to afford the prices at the very top hotels and resorts, though more modest accommodations can be found. As if the scenery wasn’t paradisiacal enough, the snorkeling and diving, over coral gardens and with sharks and rays, is spectacular.

Byron Bay, Australia

Why now? Enhance your well-being on a yoga retreat.

The June solstice sees adherents across the globe celebrate the International Day of Yoga. Though Byron Bay may no longer be the preserve of backpackers and hippies, having evolved into a stylish, upmarket destination, it retains a decidedly laidback air and alternative scene – an ideal place to recharge your spiritual and physical batteries at one of the excellent yoga retreats and studios. Of course, yoga sessions don’t take all day – and, though you could spend the rest of your time meditating, why would you when there’s such a wealth of beaches and activities on hand? Don mask and snorkel to encounter subaquatic marvels at Julian Rocks – watch for wobbegong sharks, sea turtles, rays and kaleidoscopic fi sh – or grab your surfboard and shorty wetsuit to catch the reliable winter swells. This is the time to watch for whales, too: thousands of humpbacks migrate through the waters off Byron between June and October; spot them from shore at Cape Byron or join a dedicated whale-watching boat tour.

Shetland, Scotland

Why now? Roam the UK’s northernmost wilds and sip Scotch in endless summer days.

Closer to Bergen than Edinburgh, the 100-plus Shetland Islands in the North Atlantic have a distinctly Nordic flavor – indeed, they were Norwegian till 1469. Come in June, when the sun barely sets, to hike windswept hills and coast; to discover the deafening seabird colonies of Sumburgh Head, Fair Isle, Foula and Noss, bustling with thousands of breeding puffins, kittiwakes, guillemots, gannets and more; and to explore the islands’ 5000 years of human occupation at the enigmatic broch (stone tower) of Mousa and turf clad ruins of Jarlshof. The weather can turn without warning; if clouds gather, retreat to sparky capital Lerwick’s fine museum or one of its tempting bars. A traditional fiddle tune and a dram of local whisky should warm your cockles: Shetland Reel, on Unst, is Scotland’s northernmost (legal) distillery.

colorado-dmo-crested-butte-denise-chambers-Miles.jpg

Western Colorado, USA

Why now? Saddle up for ranch life and ecological renewal.

The thrill of donning chaps, mounting a Mustang and herding steers is an elemental dream for many. But like the themes and attitudes of those films and TV shows, ranching has evolved over the years. Today, many outfits not only host urbanites looking to play out cowboy fantasies in “dude ranches” – offering activities such as yoga, rafting, bird-watching, writing workshops and mountain biking as well as the more-usual riding, hunting and fishing – but also embrace modern ideas of conservation and sustainability. Beat the high summer heat with a June vacation at one of Colorado ’s innovative ranches – perhaps Zapata or Chico Basin, where you can get hands-on with the nitty-gritty of raising cattle and bison and learn how habitats are managed to protect biodiversity.

iStock-477568338-RFC.jpg

Why now? Watch rare sea turtles nest on Caribbean shores.

Though the leatherback is the planet’s heftiest turtle, weighing up to 700kg (1543lb), it’s defenseless against the egg collection and fisheries bycatch that have ravaged populations – as is now classed as officially “vulnerable.” This means that meeting this ancient creature is always special – and seeing dozens of females lumbering onto shore to lay hundreds of eggs is simply magical. During the peak nesting season (Mar-Jun), the beaches of Matura, Fishing Pond and, particularly, Grande Riviere in northern Trinidad host up to 500 egg-laying females each night – and in June (when World Sea Turtle Day is celebrated on the 16th) the hatchlings start to emerge, scuttling down to the sea to start the cycle again. Make a turtle encounter the centerpiece of a trip to this southeast Caribbean island, where, even though the rainy season is beginning, you can also enjoy plenty of warm sunshine, lively nightlife and festivals, and often lower prices (less so in Grande Riviere). Bird-watchers are in paradise, too, with several hotspots for spotting rare species.

Where are the best places to travel to in June for culture?

LPL-8240.jpg

Gdańsk, Poland

Why now? Discover golden treasures galore: sands, amber and rich history.

Perched in a sheltered spot on the Baltic at the mouth of the Vistula River, the city currently known as Gdańsk has attracted visitors – welcome and otherwise – for over 1000 years: Bohemians, Teutonic Knights, the Hanseatic League, and Prussians (later, Germans) who knew it as Danzig. They left a magnificent historic core, packed with Renaissance architecture lovingly restored after WWII devastation. Stroll the Royal Way to admire magnificent townhouses, city gates and churches, and shop for some of the fine amber for which the city has long been famous. That gold-tinged jewelry isn’t the only thing that glints in warm June sunshine. The sandy beaches of Sopot , the leisure-focused part of the tri-city conurbation of Gdańsk, beckon from just a few kilometers to the north, together with a host of lively bars and nightclubs – still fairly calm before the densest crowds of high summer arrive.

shutterstock1598493571.jpg

Aveiro & Coimbra, Portugal

Why now? Discover culture, canals, crooners and delicious cuisine.

Portugal ’s brightest minds have studied – and celebrated – in Coimbra for over seven centuries since its venerable hilltop university opened in 1290. By June, though, the youngsters have ebbed away, leaving the cobbled streets echoing with the soul-stirring tones of the city’s distinctive style of fado music. Once you’ve admired the magnificent Romanesque 12th-century Sé Velha (Old Cathedral) and climbed the 180 steps of the Torre da Universidade for city views, make the short hop north to Aveiro , the so-called “Venice of Portugal.” Glide along its canals aboard a colorful moliceiro (traditional seaweed-harvesting boat), stroll streets lined with elegant art nouveau villas, and absorb the action at the Mercado do Peixe (Fish Market) – around which, of course, you’ll find the freshest seafood. Then slip across to the sand and surf at Praia de São Jacinto or Praia da Costa Nova before holidaymakers arrive in force in July.

Where are the best places to travel to in June for food and drink?

GettyImages-1056842690.jpeg

Cape Cod, USA

Why now? Celebrate sun, sea and sand (and seafood).

If you’re fond of sand dunes and salty air, try New England ’s favorite seaside destination. The flexed arm of Cape Cod is lined with beaches, cutesy towns, oysters, clams and lobster rolls; no wonder millions flock here each year. Most, though, come in July and August – and after the long weekend around Memorial Day (May 30), the crowds thin, making June a delicious month to visit, with more chances of bagging accommodation and finding space on a beach.

Not that it’s too quiet: the month is peppered with events celebrating the arts (including Provincetown International Film Festival). Trace an arc around the Cape by car, pausing at the pretty harbors and heading out on a whale-watching cruise, or cycle the 25-mile Cape Cod Rail Trail between South Dennis and Wellfleet.

GettyImages-1783475263-RFC.jpg

Sicily, Italy

Why now? Feast on fine food and wine.

The largest Mediterranean island is – excuse the travel cliché – a true cultural crossroads: ancient Greeks and Arabs, medieval Normans, Spanish and English conquerors, colonizers and visitors all left their marks here. This mixed heritage is evident in Sicily’s extraordinary historic sites: the ancient Hellenic and Roman monuments of Agrigento , Syracuse and Taormina ; Palermo ’s Norman palace and nearby cathedral at Monreale – all less crowded before the peak of July and August, yet delightfully warm for wandering. But the cultural mix also inflects the island’s distinctive cuisine. On a culinary circumnavigation, savor hints of North Africa in oranges and couscous. Devour tuna, anchovies and sardines, and snack on arancini (filled, fried rice balls), cazzilli (potato croquettes) and panelle (chickpea fritters). Look for teardrop-shaped caciocavallo and sheep’s-milk ricotta cheeses, the latter stuffed into pastry tubes for sweet cannoli. And sip excellent corvo, regaleali and sweet malvasia and Marsala wine.

Where are the best places to travel to in June for adventure?

GettyImages-690984869.jpg

North Washington State, USA

Why now? Kayak with killer whales and trek epic trails in an adventure seeker’s nirvana.

This month in Washington the stars align: the sun shines more, the days are longer and warmer (around 22–25°C/72–77°F) and whale sightings soar, yet trails and accommodations are yet to get busy for peak summer. And some of those constellations shine from below: the bioluminescence that sparkles in the waters of the Salish Sea in summer months is one more reason to take to the waters around the San Juan Islands . Join a sea-kayaking tour for the best chances of paddling alongside orca foraging for salmon in these nutrient-rich waters, not to mention porpoises, seals and bald eagles; minke and humpback whales fin here, too. Back on land, hikers are spoiled for choice among the old-growth temperate rainforest, ice-scoured peaks and wild coast of Olympic National Park , spanning over 3700 sq km (1428 sq miles).

iStock-1401846137-RFC.jpg

Why now? Discover South America’s wild, historic heart.

Leave any preconceptions about Paraguay at the check-in desk, if you have any: few people know much about this diverse landlocked nation, and fewer still have visited. Today, though tourism infrastructure is still sparse, this friendly country is emerging from a period tainted by poverty, crime and unrest. June – when the climate is dry, temperatures moderate and before July heralds holiday season – is the time to explore the capital Asunción and to delve into the Chaco. A vast, semi-arid region of marshes, saltwater lagoons, palm forests and savannah punctuated by cacti the size of houses, this “Green Inferno” is home to native Guaraní people, Mennonite communities and a dizzying array of birdlife; if you’re lucky, you might also spot caiman, tapir and giant anteater. In the south, tour the historic towns and ruined red sandstone reductions (missions) of San Ignacio Guazú, Trinidad and Jesús, founded by Jesuits in the 17th and 18th centuries.

six year old girls laughing together on the beach, one girl has her body buried in the sand and the other girl is laying next to her friend

June kicks off the summer travel season, but so many families haven't locked in their travel plans yet! The main reason: indecision. "Airfare and hotel prices are high, so I really want to make sure where I go is worth the money," one would-be traveler told us. Another confessed that she's just overwhelmed with the possibilities: "For the last three years, we've had to plan around what we thought were Covid-safe trips. Now everywhere is back on the table."

Some of this month's picks are shoulder-season destinations with great deals. "Off-season destinations, like Mexico, are a miracle for your budget," says Henley Vazquez , co-founder of Fora, an innovative travel agency. "Will it be hot in Mexico in June? Yes, but it will also be hot where I live, and I don't have a beach and countless pools to keep cool."

Whether you've been eyeing a beach trip, a trip to Europe, a Route 66 adventure, a multi-generational getaway or a national park pick, our list has you covered. So go ahead and book a vacation now before your dates sell out! Soon, you'll be having the time of your life.

10 of the Coolest, Most Unique Rentals People Are Booking on Airbnb Right Now

Landscape of Norwegian fjords with red barns on coast.

1. Lofoten Islands, Norway

 • Why We Recommend It: long days filled with the “ midnight sun ”, gorgeous hikes, surprisingly scrumptious eats
 • Where to stay: Skarungen (from $125/night), Napp Home with a View (from $133/night), Hattvika Lodge (from $433/night)

You’ve undoubtedly seen the Lofoten Islands all over Instagram in winter when the Northern Lights tend to pop up there. Still, the early summer is the time to see the northern Norwegian archipelago in all its glory. Norrøna Hvitserk Travel , an adventure travel company, runs “ The Best of the Lofoten ” in these warmer months, a customizable itinerary filled with Sherpa-made trail hiking, boat trips, and lots of wildflowers and wildlife peeping. Each day is set amongst charming fishing villages—adorably painted in red, yellow, and white hues—where you’ll find vibrant, unexpected shops and cafes. There are also picturesque harbors and epic mountain views, which the region is known for, and Norrona Hvitserk arranges your lodging along the way with some pretty impressive vistas of their own.

When you’re in Lofoten, try the Norwegian specialty Brunost or “brown cheese” (even though it’s not technically a cheese ). You should also look to partake in the Norwegian tradition of sauna, hot tub, and cold plunge—the waters around Lofoten are around 52 degrees this time of year, a tad warmer than trying it in the winter. Other must-dos in the region: Visit the picturesque village of Nusfjord , go on a sea eagle safari to Trollfjord , or hit the picturesque beaches of Hauklandstranda and Kvalvika . You can also try something completely new like e-Foiling in the Arctic—the “flying surfboard” is available for guests to book with a master instructor at Hattvika Lodge . If you stop here, you should stay for one of their aquavit-infused cocktails, gourmet seafood, and/or reindeer-forward dinner prepared at the lodge’s stylish restaurant, Fangst .

2. New York, New York

 • Why We Recommend It: parades & celebrations, vibrant new restaurants, well-priced flights
 • Where to Stay: Gild Hall (from $294/night), Virgin Hotel (from $333/night), The Bushwick Hideaway (from $159/night) Selina Hotel (from $208/night)

Despite all the controversy surrounding its logo redesign , we still galore! Partake in Pride celebrations the last Sunday in June (but really, all month long!), with unique events already on the books, including Queerapaloiza's day party for QTBIPOC women and a unique " Pride Swim" in the Hudson River along Manhattan's glittering waterfront. Gild Hall , a trendy hotel in town, will also offer visitors a special Pride rate throughout June. And the month also brings with it the Puerto Rican Day Parade , Coney Island's Mermaid Parade (yep, like Ariel mermaids), and Governer's Bal l—starring Lizzo, Odesza, and Kendrick Lamar as headliners—which is yet another reason to get to charming Governer's Island apart from an idyllic-weather stroll. If you're looking for a hot summer res in New York, there are plenty to try your luck on—some harder to get than others. Torrisi and Bad Roman top that list as Italian options, but walk-ins are accepted at the bar if you're stealthy. For something French, look no further than Essential by Christophe , which is Michelin-starred chef Christophe Bellanca's first solo restaurant serving up seasonal, creative spins on French fare, including a white asparagus dish that will make you actually like asparagus, plus scallops, spiced duck, poached lobster, and Warm Manjari Chocolate Tart that will knock your socks off. Did we mention many great French wines to choose from, too? If you're coming to the Big Apple, you'll likely want the skyline view, too. Take the NY Waterway ferry across the Hudson to Lincoln Harbor . The beautiful, skyline-filled ride ideal for photo opps is less than 10 minutes, and within walking distance from the ferry stop, you'll find Blu on the Hudson , a sophisticated and stylish new restaurant with gorgeous city views and a handsome, marble-topped bar. The varied menus here include a raw bar and crudo menu, homemade pasta, sushi, and a steak menu with a guest-favorite branzino and wagyu steak.

3. Panorama, British Columbia

 • Why We Recommend It: flight deals, breathtaking nature, family spot, rustic feel
 • Where to Stay: Panorama Resorts (from $108), Private Cabin on the Golf Course (from $312/night), Bighorn Meadows Resort (from $144/night)

Adventure seekers flock to the epic Kootenay Rockies in winter for a family-friendly bowl and " Monster cat " skiing at Panorama Mountain Resort . Come June, the crowds return with visitors enjoying the resort and region before the heat really sets in for a bevy of activities, including alpine yoga, mountain biking, sightseeing chairlift rides and hiking. Jonesing for something unique? Local artist Pat Bavin guides forest bathing walks for an experience that can only be described as tranquil and immersive. Panorama Resort also hosts the Branch Out bike tour each June, which travels down the mountain toward the beautiful Invermere Lake. The event helps raise funds for research into neurological disorders, and for those with little experience in biking, the resort also offers lessons .

Besides the 43 miles of biking, hiking, and trekking, Panorama is the home of The Greywolf Golf Course , an 18-hole championship course in the majestic Purcell Mountains. Golf enthusiasts can play to their hearts' content and end with all the action in the incredible pools with mountain vistas , and Radium Hot Springs is nearby for those who love to soak. Consider it the ultimate relaxation session after an adrenaline-pumping day.

For grub, try on-mountain favorites Alto Kitchen & Bar (Pro tip: Try the BBQ chicken pizza) and Ullr Bar , just a short drive away in the town of Invermere, where the atmosphere is buzzy, and the drinks and fried chicken are nothing short of legendary.

Wide exterior shot of crosswalk in San Francisco.

4. San Francisco, California

 • Why We Recommend It: excellent flight deals, robotaxi transportation, new parklands with views
 • Where to stay: 1 Hotel San Francisco (from $424/night), Bright, Modern Garden Unit (from $224/night), The Hotel Castro (from $396/night)

June gloom—overcast skies with cooler temps—is real in SanFran, but don't let that dissuade you from visiting this great American city in the summer months. Also pretty cool? Cruising around San Francisco in June in a Cruise , the robotaxi service that is currently operating in the city from 10pm-5:30am — we'd argue it's the perfectly safe way to get around after a late night out in SF's buzziest cocktail bars, which include Cold Drinks Bar , Alchemist Bar & Lounge and Dento Union .

You can also get around the city by renting a bike/e-bike from the Sports Basement to take a ride around the marina and northern part of SF, cross the Golden Gate Bridge for a charming lunch in Sausalito, or see the Presidio, where there's a lot of new to experience via the Presidio Tunnel Tops . Designed by James Corner Field Operations, the team that created NYC's High Line, it's a new park in the neighborhood that should be visited. Built over Highway 101, the Tunnel Tops are filled with 14 acres of lawns and fields, scenic overlooks, trails, and picnic areas with primo views of San Francisco and one of her greatest treasures, the Golden Gate Bridge.

best place june mexico city

5. Mexico City, Mexico

 • Why We Recommend It: historical city, art walks, flight deals, gastronomical hub, street art, host city of Latin American Pride
 • Where to Stay: Andaz Hotel (from $296/night), Cozy Loft in Roma (from $39 night), Casa Decu Condesa (from $87), Casa Polanco (from $526/night)

Mexico City is where all the cool kids are hanging out lately . The city mixes history and modernity with an incredible anthropological museum , funky art galleries, and boutique shopping. The darling neighborhoods of Condesa and Roma show off the dizzying metropolis in its best light. Sprinkled with everchanging street art, the 'nabes are also home to some of the city's best dining and cocktail experiences. Start yours at Cabuya rooftop bar on the 17th floor of Condessa’s trendiest and newest boutique hotel, the Andaz Mexico City Condesa . Sip cocktails during golden hour and capture those Insta-worthy views of the whole city, then head to dinner in Huset's garden or one of their relaxed dining rooms where you'll forget for a moment that you're in one of the largest cities in the world, or try a Mexican twist on Mediterranean cuisine, Pigeon , also in Roma. For partygoers, Hanky Panky is a secret speakeasy in Juarez with its classy neon-lit interior. The bartenders are experts in their craft and will undoubtedly serve you some of the best cocktails CDMX makes for an unforgettable experience. Other experiences we love in Mexico City: A visit to the Luis Barragán-designed Casa Pedregal , a gorgeous and pretty funky private residence and gardens that open up for tours to the public. Stay at a hotel like Casa Polanco . They might be able to secure you some coveted tickets to see one of Barragan's other masterpieces, the Capuchin Convent Chapel , a stunning light- and angle-filled chapel. We also love a good weekend brunch at San Angel Inn's lush courtyard that will immerse you into some quality friend and family time and the ability to try out local delicacies.

Columbus, Ohio Skyline over the Scioto River at sunset.

6. Columbus, Ohio

 • Why We Recommend It: lots of history, tech hub, pleasant temps without the crowds, amazing breweries
 • Where to Stay: The Junto (from $314/night), Historic Factory Loft at Short North (from $93/night), Elegant Short North Apartment (from $97/night)

Known for its vibrant college culture (go Buckeyes!), art scene, expanding tech industry, and history, Columbus is already undergoing an energetic transformation. The Junto , a lifestyle hotel located in an up-and-coming neighborhood a little west of downtown, will open there prior to June to match the city's crave-able energy. Case in point: the hotel plans to have a poutine window so you can end your evening with late-night naughty eats. Little West Poutine promises to be a curious, crave-able, walk-up window where night owls can indulge in the classic french fry, cheese curd, and gravy treat.

Early risers in Columbus can enjoy day trips to Metro Park for nature-watching, hiking, and zip-lining. Along the Scioto River, Scioto Park offers outdoor fitness classes and — what else? — lots of live music. Columbus is also beloved for its lively festivals this time of year, like the Columbus Arts Festival , which attracts top artists from around the country, ComFest for grassroots events, and the Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival, full of local and national acts. When visiting Columbus, "do not pass go," as they say, without trying the famous Columbus Brewing Company or popping by the Middle West Spirits distillery. When the June weather is glorious in town, you can also try one of the many patio restaurants for a quintessential Midwestern summer meal.

7. Juneau, Alaska

 • Why We Recommend It: cultural heritage, nature walks, midnight sun, wildlife viewing.
 • Where to Stay: The Alaskan Hotel & Bar ($115/night), Juneau Home with Views (from $625/night), Modern Home in Juneau (from $383/night)

Imagine endless summer days filled with adventure, late-evening outdoor activities, and stunning late-night sunset views. In Juneau, Alaska, where the sun stays up for roughly 18 hours a day in June, this is your reality. One way to soak in nature's splendor here is by boarding Norwegian's sparkly new Prima ship to see Juneau and the rest of Alaska's treasures on a 7-day cruise departing from Seattle, Washington. As part of your trip, you can also take a flight seeing tour or go on a kayaking adventure and witness thunderous cracks of glaciers up close while surrounded by awe-inspiring blue glacial hues. Juneau is filled with wildlife peeping opportunities, too. One such inspiring experience can be had on a guided boat tour , which offers the chance to encounter majestic humpback whales in the surrounding waters. If you're extra lucky, you'll also have the opportunity to spot an orca! For festival lovers, Juneau has plenty going on in the early summer, including The Sitka Summer Fest , which brings the world's most renowned classical musicians to town. A visit to The Sealaska Heritage Institute is another must in this coastal Alaskan town for those who want to learn about the rich Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures. With over 10,000 years of indigenous inhabitation, Juneau is spoiled with traditional dance performances and cultural workshops, making it the ideal destination to celebrate humanity and nature alike.

So get some sand between your toes on the Yarmouth Sand Sculpture Trail, where an artist creates sand sculptures the entire family will love. Or, go wine tasting on Plymouth Bay .

There’s no better time to explore New York City than in June. Central Park is just beginning to bloom, restaurants are open for al fresco dining and free outdoor activities are abundant — it’s no wonder New York City is the #1 domestic destination on Expedia’s summer travel forecast . If you love live music, check out the recital series in parks across the city, or book tickets to a show on Broadway. If you’re looking to explore the city by foot, try walking The High Line or down the West Side Highway for the best views. And if you’re around the last weekend, you can celebrate Pride Month by attending the NYC Pride March. Summer is a great time to visit too because it's less crowded — locals tend to head to the beaches of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut!

Yellowstone National Park

cheap travel destinations june 2023

For those looking for off-the-grid adventure, you’ll love all that Yellowstone National Park has to offer. By June, most of the trails are accessible as the snow has begun to melt. If you are only there for a weekend, you must see the famous Grand Prismatic Spring and Old Faithful geyser. But if you have a few more days to spare, we suggest spending a night camping out under the stars now that the weather is warmer and more predictable. There is also an abundance of wildlife during this time of year and Lamar Valley is one of the best places to spot bison, elk, deers, bears, coyotes and even wolves.

Seattle, Washington

cheap travel destinations june 2023

We can’t mention Seattle without mentioning the iconic Space Needle observation deck. You’ll get the best 360-degree view of the city — in the daytime and nighttime if you plan to arrive at sunset. But if heights aren’t your thing, there are plenty of places to walk around at ground level. Stroll through Gas Works Park and set up a picnic, or walk around Capitol Hill and grab a bite to eat. You could spend your entire trip exploring the city, but we highly recommend taking advantage of seeing the surrounding nature. Whale-watching season runs May through October, so spend an exciting day out on the water learning about marine wildlife. Or if you’re looking for some scenic hikes, Mt. Rainier is in your backyard.

Nothing says vacation like relaxing under a palm tree in Honolulu. It’s the perfect place for beach lovers with its beautiful white sand and warm waters. Or, if you’re looking for adventure, try hiking Manoa Falls or taking a tour of the famous Diamond Head volcanic crater. Sanibel Island, Florida

cheap travel destinations june 2023

Along the US coastline is Sanibel Island. This quiet isle offers beautiful beaches and excellent shell hunting which was my favorite thing to do when I visited in June 2017. The wildlife refuges are perfect for bird watching and spotting dolphins and manatees. The area is a good size to explore by bike or kayak. It can get hot, but if you visit in late spring you’ll beat the stormy season. Most people come here during the winter so you’ll definitely get better deals during the summer months.

Cancun, Mexico

cheap travel destinations june 2023

Known for its warm weather and crystal clear waters, Cancun is the top international destination for this summer, based on flight demand data from Expedia. While June does fall during the rainy season, it’s rare to get a full day of rain as most showers only last a few hours — and you’ll find it’s less crowded and more affordable because of this. Not to mention, you miss the spring break crowd if you’re looking for a relaxing getaway. When the sun is shining, there are plenty of outdoor activities to do like snorkeling and scuba diving. This area of Mexico is also rich in history which you can learn about by exploring the local archeological sites and doing a Chichén Itzá tour .

London, England

cheap travel destinations june 2023

The second most popular international summer destination on Expedia's forecast, London is truly busy year around. But while accommodations may be a bit pricier, there are many free attractions for the entire family. In fact, the Nationally Gallery, British Museum and Natural History all have free admittance to their permanent exhibitions. If you’re looking for an inexpensive bite, try visiting Borough Market for some of the best fish and chips. And Monmouth Coffee is a must for your caffeine fix. You can also experience London’s rich history by drinking your way through a historic pub crawl. Stops to consider include Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese , Ye Olde Mitre and The Old Bank of England .

Auckland, New Zealand

cheap travel destinations june 2023

For those interested in traveling further afield, Expedia ranked Auckland the top trending summer destination. New Zealand offers spectacular natural scenery and a range of outdoor activities, including hiking and surfing. The country is also known for its vineyards, and you can visit its many wineries for tastings. It’s easy to get around by public transport here, especially in the heart of the city. Temperatures tend to drop in June, but so do airfare, hotel rates and the number of tourists.

Novotel Auckland Airport

Novotel Auckland Airport

Novotel Auckland Airport is a convenient choice for travelers who need some rest and relaxation right away after landing from the long-haul flight. After sleeping off any jet lag, we highly recommend going on a Dolphin and Whale Watching Eco-Safari Cruse to immerse yourself in the beautiful wildlife right away.

The 13 best places to travel in June 2024

Looking for the best destinations for June? From cultured cities to the beaches of your dreams, we've got you covered

Every year, more and more people seem to choose to take their summer holidays a little earlier. Why? Well, you’ll have to ask them. Everyone is different, but the lure of fewer crowds, lower prices and slightly less-scorching weather is clear. Oh, and those enticing off-season prices.

In the northern hemisphere, June is summer but not quite ‘July and August’ summer, while the temperatures in the south are also on the more bearable side of the ledger. We’ve compiled a collection of the best places to travel in June, although there is no such thing as a bad choice. How do the islands of Portugal , the seascape of Seattle and the beaches of Fiji sound? (You don’t need to answer that).

Best places to travel in June

Albania

1. Albania

With beaches to match Greece, music festivals to match Glastonbury, prices to match, er, a happy wallet, and all without heaving crowds, Albania is gaining speed as the alternative beach hol destination, and for good reason. This year’s probably the final year to go before the masses get wind of this relatively untouched country with a fascinating history. Albania might still not be the most easily accessible place to visit, with only one major international airport in capital Tirana, but this offers an opportunity to travel along the coast or drive through the mountains and soak in its unspoilt and ruggedly beautiful landscape.

Discover the best places to visit in Albania

Langkawi, Malaysia

2. Langkawi, Malaysia

It’s technically the rainy season on Malaysia’s west coast in June, but showers on Langkawi are short-lived, and sunshine often prevails. The main benefits of coming here in the shoulder season? Deserted attractions and bargain hotel stays. Popular Pantai Cenang beach is much quieter in June, while pretty Tanjung Rhu (which is far from the tourist hubs) can be practically empty. Take the cable car to the Skybridge on a blue-sky day for unforgettable jungle views.

Discover the best things to do in Langkawi

Fiji

3. Fiji

June is technically Fiji’s winter, but temperatures still hover in the mid-twenties (mid-seventies Fahrenheit), and this ‘cool’ weather makes for seriously epic sunsets. The archipelago’s turquoise waters are particularly clear at this time of year, ideal for snorkelling and diving. Viti Levu’s outer islands are a top choice for experienced divers looking for a liveaboard trip, while the Mamanucas boast calm seas and beautiful coral reefs. Resorts are getting busier, but you’re still likely to find a better deal than you would in July or August .

Discover the best things to do in Fiji

Scottish Highlands

4. Scottish Highlands

Time to get rugged. Nowhere in the UK does ‘rugged’ as naturally as the Scottish Highlands, but even the rough terrain of these northern behemoths takes a break in June. The sun even makes a brief appearance here during June, making it the perfect time to explore as much of the region as possible without having to make a break for shelter at every turn. The midges are yet to show up in force, and eagle-eyed visitors might even get to spot a dolphin or two frolicking in the waters.

Seattle, USA

5. Seattle, USA

Whether you come for a grunge pilgrimage, that gum wall or the incredible great outdoors, Seattle’s distinct identity draws crowds from far and wide. The city’s fun-loving side is usually on full display in June as the artsy Fremont Solstice Parade stops traffic with a naked bike ride, and Seattle Pride paints the streets all colours of the rainbow. Other highlights include orca spotting in Puget Sound or sniffing out the costly-but-coveted Copper River salmon at Pike Place Market (only available from May until mid-June).

Discover the best things to do in Seattle

Prague, Czech Republic

6. Prague, Czech Republic

In the past, the cramped Old Town streets of Prague in summer have tended to provoke whispers of ‘overtourism.’ But the city is trying hard to reinvent itself – fewer pub crawls and horse-drawn carts , more culture and food – and if you venture away from the main hubs, you’ll find there’s plenty to see beyond Charles Bridge and the (tourist-proofed) Lennon Wall (although they’re still worth an early morning gander). June is not yet the apex of tourist season, but benefits from beautiful weather and (in regular years) a slew of delectable festivals, including the largest ice cream fest in Central Europe and a microbrewery bonanza.

The best things to do in Prague

Zambia

7. Zambia

Zambia’s dry and bright conditions in June are ideal for wildlife spotting in the 3500 square-mile South Luangwa National Park, and one big bonus; mosquito numbers dwindle as the landscape dries out. Walking safaris were first pioneered right here, allowing you to get up close to the region’s flora, identify the dusty prints of baboons, hyenas, or even leopards and see just how gargantuan African elephants really are. If that’s not enough of an adrenaline hit, make a beeline for Victoria Falls, where you can bungee jump over the Zambezi.

Boston, USA

8. Boston, USA

The Bruins probably don’t have many more years of contending left in them, but that doesn’t mean that June is going to all of a sudden become a quiet time of year in the Cradle of Liberty. America’s Walking City is at its most walkable during the summer, and the mass of street festivals attest to that, while concerts and other sporting events are a constant throughout the month. There’s also the small matter of whale watching, which is never a bad thing.

East coast, Sri Lanka

9. East coast, Sri Lanka

June is one of the wettest months of Sri Lanka’s southwest monsoon season (April to September) but on the east coast, it is a different story. In Arugam Bay, blazing sunshine and consistent waves mean this month is made for surfing… or lazing in a hammock with a smoothie, if that’s more your style. Nearby Kumana National Park sees far fewer visitors than its southern sister Yala, meaning you can spot leopards, elephants and crocodiles without an entourage of jostling jeeps.

Azores, Portugal

10. Azores, Portugal

As if the Azores weren’t idyllic enough already, in June, these verdant volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic burst with colour as copious wildflowers come into bloom. The island of Flores (meaning flowers) is the best place to spot them, but Parque Terra Nostra on the main island of São Miguel is just as captivating and a real treat for botany boffins. You also stand a decent chance of spotting whales and dolphins in the wild, as the widest variety of cetacean species is migrating through these waters.

Discover the best things to do in the Azores

Zadar, Croatia

11. Zadar, Croatia

Truth be told, you aren’t going to be able to avoid the crowds in Dalmatia during the summer. Heck, you can barely avoid them during the spring. If you want to visit the Croatian coast in quieter times, pack that windbreaker and head here in winter. Still, Zadar and June are a gorgeous combination, and what is sneakily the most exciting town in Dalmatia puts on its best face and puckers up for the visitors. The Salutation to the Sun is one of the region’s great attractions, accentuated by a gorgeous setting sun and a crisp Brlog craft beer.

Copenhagen, Denmark

12. Copenhagen, Denmark

June is a great time to make the trip to Copenhagen, as arguably Europe’s most stylish city comes alive in a blur of street festivals and shimmering class. The live music schedule is packed during the middle months meaning there’s plenty of choice for gig-hunters, while the Photo Festival showcases some of the finest photography from the other side of the lens. Copenhagen’s weather is arguably at its most enjoyable in June, which is reason enough to schedule a visit for this time.

Kyrgyzstan

13. Kyrgyzstan

Current events notwithstanding, central Asia is having a moment. Relaxed visa regulations mean the region is more accessible than ever, and its unparalleled combo of rich history, dazzling architecture and rugged landscapes are starting to draw a savvy crowd. From mid-June, Kyrgyzstan’s low-altitude hiking trails start to thaw out, the whitewater rafting season starts, and remote yurt camps welcome travellers looking for a digital detox. In mountainous Naryn, make time for the Kyrgyz Shyrdagy Festival, a celebration of the ancient Kyrgyz art of felt carpet making.

Posted: April 12, 2023 | Last updated: July 11, 2023

Vacationing somewhere new or traveling back to a favorite spot is always exciting, but there's no doubt that some getaways can get expensive. And with inflation affecting many bottom lines, it's easy to let a fear of high pricing keep you from booking your next trip. But travel is still a priority for Americans. According to the U.S. Travel Association, travel spending will increase this year, even compared with pre-pandemic levels. And while demand may be high, and steals and deals harder to come by (you should know the best time to book a flight and the best time to book a hotel), there are plenty of cheap places to travel around the world and some great travel apps to help you plan.

We've got you covered with the best low-cost quick trips and big adventures, both in the U.S. and around the globe, and they all have one thing in common: They're perfect for traveling on a budget. These spots offer affordable adventures without giving up any of the relaxation or entertainment that make vacations so enjoyable. And all of them are equally delightful outside of peak seasons, when prices on both airfare and hotels decrease. (In Europe, for example, avoid the prime tourist months of June through August.) For the most cost-effective travel (and to scratch that wanderlust itch), here are our cheap travel picks.

It's just a five-hour direct flight from New York and a three-hour hop from Miami. (No major international airport near you? Airfare is typically in the mid-$500 range round trip, and Kayak lists their affordable hotels around $182 per night.

The capital city was declared a World Heritage Site thanks to its history and beautiful architecture, with colorful castles, cobblestone streets and colonial churches, so there's plenty to see.
South America

A hidden gem in South America, Uruguay is just a quick jump from better-known tourist spots, such as Buenos Aires, but is much more low-key and laid back.
