The Auditorio de Tenerife hosts a  Tour 2022  concert by  James Rhodes .

The pianist and writer James Rhodes turns traditional classical music concerts into  an inclusive and authentic experience.  The English musician currently lives in Spain, a country he loves deeply. During his concerts, he shares his love and passion for music in such a way that each attendee connects with him and with the great composers that Rhodes presents and plays. In addition, the musician is a great and unique communicator who mixes wit and a sense of humour with the great gift of knowledge. Thus, he makes serious subjects, such as classical music, accessible to all.

"During my concerts, I talk about the pieces I play, I explain  why I have selected them , the significance it has for me, and in what context the piece was composed at the time." This is how James Rhodes explains his recitals in the prologue of his book "Instrumental: A Memoir of Madness, Medication, and Music," 13 th  edition, which has sold more than 150,000 copies in Spain alone. The book has been an unexpected and big success worldwide.

With the aim of "dusting" the image that seems to surround this musical genre, Rhodes offers a  fresh look  and a completely revolutionary concert format that moves away from the classical music context. The British artist has coined his own personal recital style. Apart from playing, he contextualises the works he plays by giving a prior narration about the pieces, the story behind them and their composers. James Rhodes is currently one of the main  classical music promoters worldwide . He does so with tours and concerts in all kinds of festivals and venues. Likewise, he has been the main figure of several documentaries filmed with the support of British and Spanish TV channels.

This charming and talented musician strongly believes in the  power of classical music : "In this concert, I would like to invite the audience to escape from the increasingly crazy world we live in and to reload a bit." Acclaimed by the critics for developing his own style, during his performances and with his very personal perspective, Rhodes contributes to show how his musical experience is. This way he dissipates the solemnity cloud that surrounds classical music and  brings it closer to the general public .

British pianist James Rhodes has gained considerable renown, not only because of his unorthodox programming ideas combined with straightforward performance and his recordings that regularly top the iTunes classical chart, but also because of the books he has authored. Rhodes was born on March 6, 1975, in London. Rhodes heard a recording of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major, Op. 73 ("Emperor") belonging to his father. He asked for and was given piano lessons, but made little progress. Between the ages of 14 and 18, he studied with Colin Stone, advanced further, and eventually earned a scholarship to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1993. Considering the idea of becoming a music agent, he wrote to Italian agent Franco Panozzo. Panozzo agreed to meet Rhodes, concluded that he should become a pianist instead, and arranged for further teaching. Rhodes made his recital debut at London's Steinway Hall in 2008. The following year he appeared in a BBC documentary observing the 200th anniversary of Chopin's birth, and in 2010 he was signed to the Warner Bros. label, becoming the first classical pianist signed to the label's rock division. Rhodes has maintained a full concert schedule, appearing as far afield as Barbados, Hong Kong, and Chicago, where he was featured at the International Beethoven Festival. He has appeared at rock clubs and festivals including the Latitude Festival, where he was the first classical pianist to appear. But he is perhaps best known for his unusually titled albums: 2010's Bullets & Lullabies is representative. Despite their unorthodox titles and concepts, Rhodes has mostly played mainstream classical repertory from Bach to the late Romantics. He has recorded mostly for the Signum Classics label, issuing Fire on All Sides in 2018. In addition to performing and recordings, Rhodes has written for London's Telegraph and The Guardian newspapers; filmed a documentary about a program aimed at collecting unused instruments and giving them to U.K. schoolchildren, and hosted his own television series, among other appearances. He has written three books: an autobiography, a piano instructional manual, and 2018's Fire on All Sides. His recordings and books have been chart toppers, and a film adaptation of his autobiography was planned for 2020.

Rhodes has one of the best voices I've ever heard - even better live than on recordings (as most op artists are) every song is sung with the kind of raw emotion that only occurs when it's come from the heart - not generic lyrics about love, heart break and loss churned out by a music machine but with meaningful lyrics that resonate with any listener for one reason or another

"oh my darker side, I'll find your light, I know you better than that, I'll carry the weight, I'll carry the weight, until the moment I break".

Just one man, his guitars(s) and a piano - and a truly masterful set, that I was thinking about for hours after.

Go and see Rhodes before it costs you £40 for a ticket and he's a mere dot on the stage 100ft away. Be one of those people that can say " I saw Rhodes in a crowd of 100, and it felt like I was the only one in the room" I did. MAGIC.

Superb gig at the Ruby Lounge in Manchester last night at the dot to dot festival. After a delay due to sound gremlins Rhodes produced another magnificent set this time with his band. His powerful voice and haunting tunes made for a wonderful 30 minutes of amazingly great music.

It was a fantastic concert. Rhodes has a beautiful voice and a beautiful soul.

We really enjoyed watching and listening to him very much.

I would diffently go to his concert again. But next time I want to be able to sit.

One of the most intense concert ever. You wont ever be disappointed by a Rhodes concert.

After three times I saw him, I still can wait to see him again at Koko.

Best money spent on an album in my entire life!

Great singer-songwriter/performer. He can really pull out a great performance of a song just with a guitar. From the slow and melancholic ones to the ones with a bit more of fun in them. He's also really nice.

Magical night. Soaring vocal after soaring vocal, for his first full-length album show it was one powerful song after another. So many great things to come for Rhodes and can't wait for the next show.

Really great show, great 'intimate' venue, and amazing performance. It was my first time seeing Rhodes live and it was so worth the wait! Please do yourself a favor and go see one of his shows ASAP.

Definitely one of the best voices out there! Great idea to do a more stripped down show. One of the best concerts I've ever been to! Hoping for more shows to come.

Piano Solo: Classical Pianist James Rhodes on tour in Colombia

On the eve of his first of two concerts in colombia, james rhodes spoke to us about memory, the lives of the great composers and why he struggles with the idea of collaborating..

If you ask English classical pianist James Rhodes what pieces he has committed to memory he would tell you he remembers all too much. “My memory’s terrible in life,” Rhodes confesses. He says he has difficulty in recollecting names, places and what day it is.”But the first hundred thousand notes, that’s ok. I don’t know why that is and I try not to question it too much.”

Having started with a piano teacher at the age of 14, certain things came easy for Rhodes. His education and a talent for music were things he inherited naturally during the course of his life.  Rhodes abruptly ended his piano studies when he was 18 and didn’t start playing again until a decade had passed. For fans familiar with his appearances on English television or readers of his unsparing autobiography, Instrumental , his story is a difficult one to forget.

Scarred by a former gym teacher who raped him at school at the age of 6, both addiction and instutionalisation conspired to distance him from his passion for the piano. When asked about his difficult past he said that there are “some things you never forget. And when you put yourself back in that time it’s easy enough to remember it again. It’s usually my short-term memory that I have a problem with. Maybe it’s all the drugs I did.”

‘‘Rather than the concert being ‘listen to me’, it has to be ‘fucking hell, listen to this!’’

A day later he played in Medellin at the Teatro Metropolitano. His set-list included the Partita and Chaconne by Bach (transcribed by Busoni) as well as the Fourth Ballade by Chopin, which he considers “the greatest thing [Chopin] ever composed. It’s his musical autobiography. It’s almost like he’s improvising and talking and it’s another way of storytelling.”

Rhodes is himself an able storyteller. He segments his concerts with brief biographical detail that’s more valued for his enthusiasm than its accuracy. It’s an approach that may not convince everyone but one’s never in doubt as to whether Rhodes is convinced himself.

In his memoir Instrumental , Rhodes used this technique to great effect, blending the anecdotes of famous classical composers and compositions along with his own upbringing. It is often the deeply tragic and the redemptive qualities of his favourite composers that he is drawn to—whether it be speaking of Beethoven being unlucky in love, losing his hearing or being nearly beaten to death by his father, or Prokofieff’s violent music dedicated to a suicidal friend—and he uses these approachable snippets of composer’s lives as a way to engage his audience into appreciating the music. He believes musicological terms are ‘dull and irrelevant’ and that the background of a composer’s life can bring the piece to life without dumbing it down.

The method is not only pedagogical for the purposes of getting more people into concert halls. Rhodes also feels that learning about composers informs the way he approaches them in his playing. “I have very firm ideas about certain composers. People say Bach isn’t Romantic and so he shouldn’t be played in a romantic way. That’s utter bullshit.When you read about Bach you realise how intensely personal his work is. And that too informs the way I might play him.”

Rhodes has enough Spanish under his belt to have a favourite word in the language: duende.  “It’s kinda like when everything just comes together and flows.” It’s a concept he likes when he talks about how playing live in front of an audience improves him as a pianist. ‘Practicing’ live rather than alone allows Rhodes the chance to participate in the emotion that he’s inducing in the listener. It means taking a risk because there are certain pieces that are so complicated that you feel that you have to be focused on every note, but actually you just have to trust yourself that it’s in your hands and that you know what you’re doing and you let go and time disappears and you go into that zone.’ he says.

His concerts are unlike any other one may encounter in classical music. Shrouding the entire concert in darkness save for the piano, pianist and those audacious enough to use the flash of their smartphones to take pictures, a receptive Medellin crowd were moved by Rhodes’ withdrawn figure on stage. The grandness of the theatre reduced to one man and his vulnerabilities. Pieces like the Melody from Orfeo by Gluck or the Adagio by Bach/Marcello are incredibly tense in their stillness. Rhodes doesn’t so much take risks as he does reveal how fragile they are.

He may love all 32 Beethoven sonatas but the idea of recording all of them doesn’t sound like his cup of tea. As a rule, his albums have all been a mixture of works from different composers. This includes his latest effort Fire on All Sides, which is due out early next year . The album features a wide range of his interests, from Bach and Chopin to Beethoven’s profound 31st sonata.

One common thread over all of his albums is that it is almost always for solo piano. When asked about the future possibility of collaboration he said that “I’m too much of a control freak. I find it difficult to work with others. I much prefer just being on my own.”. Rhodes betrays no signs of his introverted nature. He is engaged and engaging. He is quick-witted, affable, entertains small talk and draws wide open hand gestures in the air when he speaks.

Yet his real life seems more withdrawn. Speaking openly of having few close friendships and the difficulty of collaborating musically, Rhodes admitted he doesn’t feel prepared to play with an orchestra despite his immense talent and love for, by way of example, the monumental Brahms piano concertos. Authorities Asking For Help In Finding Missing Milaca Man

MILACA ( WJON News ) -- Milaca authorities are asking for help in locating a missing man. The Milaca Police Department says 25-year-old Joseph McGrath has been missing since July 30th.

Officials say he had contact with his family around August 9th when he was believed to have been dropped off in South Minneapolis. McGrath has had no phone or electronic contact with his family since and they are concerned about his mental health. McGrath is 6 feet, 2 inches tall, 130 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes.

He was last seen wearing a "Don't Be A Richard" hat, and half-frame glasses and he has a tattoo of a wing and feather on one arm and the word "Aubree" on the other arm. Anyone with any information on McGrath's whereabouts is asked to call the Milaca Police Department at 320-983-6166.
