As a huge crown lifts from the vast stage set and into the gods at the AO Arena , it couldn't be a more regal opening for rock royalty Queen to make their epic return to live performance in Manchester . With Adam Lambert delivering utterly faultless vocals flanked by the timeless rock titans of Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor, we are given a masterclass in rock performance over an epic two-and-a-half-hour set on Monday night.

While Adam may be the young blood in this set up, guitar icon Brian and drummer Roger roll back the years in a vigorously energetic display that rockers half their age would struggle to compete with. This is rock histrionics at the highest, most flamboyant level, and the sold out crowd in Manchester cannot get enough of it.

Not that Queen are giving out half measures here. They arrive on stage just after 8pm and from then on in it is anthem after massive rock anthem for the next two and a half hours.

Here, finally, on their Rhapsody Tour two and a half years after it was first scheduled to take place, the night feels extra special for both the band and their fans. The enforced hiatus of lockdowns bringing a new verve and determination to make this as memorable as possible.

Brian says as much when he walks out to the central stage with his acoustic guitar during one particularly special part of the show. He says: “Beautiful people of Manchester I’m kind of pinching myself that we're actually here."

"I know 98.5 per cent of you bought your tickets like 2 1/2 years ago, yet totally through everything you held on to your tickets and I take my hat off to you," he says to huge cheers from the sold out crowd. He adds: "It’s a very emotional moment for us."

The feeling is clearly quite mutual. “We love you Brian” shout a succession of northern blokes who are clearly overcome by the occasion.

In Adam, the band's singer for the past ten years now would you believe, we also have the perfect showman. From the moment he struts out, resplendent in dazzling black sequinned top hat and tails, arching his fabulous glittered eyebrows, he has the audience in the palm of his leather gloved hand.

No, he's not Freddie Mercury and nor does he try to be. The American Idol makes it clear from the off that he is "A fan, just like all of you out there - I'm so lucky that I've been sharing the stage with these guys for ten years now."

He adds: "I know it's a tall order, but I get to come up here and pay tribute to the one and only incomparable rock god Freddie Mercury. So make me a promise that we can sing together and celebrate Freddie and celebrate Queen."

It hits the perfect note - just as Adam does with faultless, merciless perfection across this show. His vocal range is truly astonishing as he tackles with ease the musical melodrama of Queen's anthems - highlights include the spine-tingling Who Wants To Live Forever and of course the epic finale of Bohemian Rhapsody.

He is coquettish as he whips out a red fan to cool himself down atop the grand piano to perform a sizzling Killer Queen, licking the microphone to give extra seductive gusto after rasping: “insatiable an appetite”.

For Bicycle Race he emerges on what else? But a bling-encrusted Harley, with a leather biker suit complete with silver spikes to match. I mean it couldn’t be much more extra.

He takes on the vocal gymnastics required of Queen's back catalogue as if it was easy as singing a nursery rhyme. It’s really quite astonishing - and showed to full dramatic effect as he sings a red spot-lit wail that fills every crevice of the arena, while axeman Brian plucks out his response before launching into I Want It All.

This show has everything you could possibly want from a rock epic - screaming guitar solos, massive bursts of steam, fireworks shooting out of May’s guitar head... It really is an extravaganza.

When Brian returns for one of his legendary guitar solos it's atop a giant asteroid no less. He thrashes out the chords as planets and stars whirl around him by the wonder of technology - I mean what a visual OTT treat.

And it also has that beating rock heart of a band forged back in 1970. When Roger takes to the vocals for the epic I’m in Love with my Car we get that gnarled rock edge of a life lived in the fast lane - and he sounds amazing. It’s accompanied by extraordinary visuals on the epic stage set as we go faster and faster down some strange metropolis super highway.

Then out come 15,000 camera phones to light up Love of My Life that Brian sings with his acoustic guitar. As if the camera phones weren’t magical enough, Freddie then appears on the video big screens as if right next to Brian.

His voice fills the arena and he seems, for a moment, to be back with us. It’s a proper tearjerker.

As Freddie on screen gives applause to Brian and a cheeky wiggle of his bottom, Brian smiles and applauds in return. “You know he’s always with us,” he says as we all fight back a little tear.

Roger returns to stage to sing an emotional These are the Days of our Lives as a series of vintage videos of the full band are played. When Adam returns to join them it's a beautifully poignant moment as Roger dedicates Under Pressure to Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, building to a stunning, fitting crescendo.

queen tour manchester

The natural finale for this show is the rock opera of Bohemian Rhapsody, where we get to enjoy Brian thrusting out onto stage in a shoot of steam with metal body armour like a robot guitar warrior. The encore is brought out by the imperious Freddie on the big screens at his 1980s Live Aid finest, to lead the crowds in his famous “Ay Oh”. Then back out comes Brian with the familiar strains of We Will Rock You.

Adam returns with his rightful golden crown and bejewelled tunic to end the night with the epic singalong of We Are the Champions as if the victor of some glorious musical boxing bout. He knows, like the rest of the 15,000 strong cheer crowd, that they've smashed it here.

For those returning for round two on Tuesday in Manchester, you're in for a glorious, rocking, eye-popping feast.

Live reviews

Queen and their mercurial frontman were simply the best band ever live, and believe me I have watched more than a few.

May 7th 1978 Stafford New Bingley Hall: a huge agricultural-looking barn in the middle of nowhere was suddenly transformed into a mind blowing theatre of music at about 8pm. A song somehow resembling “We Will Rock You” but played at a frenetic speed burst out of the speakers and the mass of lights and dry ice.

Suddenly the stone-cold, crazy-paced lyrics of WWRY were assaulting our eardrums and then suddenly Freddie appeared out of the mist and on to the end of the central catwalk clad head to foot in a then-unfamiliar black leather outfit and cap - the boys were clearly here to rock.

From this beginning an already ardent fan was hooked for life. Concerts in 1979 at Birmingham, Manchester and the best gig of all time, Ally Pally, would follow as Queen took their Crazy tour across the UK and further gigs in the years to follow - but I will never forget that initial burst on to the stage and my first glimpse of the greatest showman of all time.

I had been looking forward to this for ages. Between the ages of 13 and 15 I religiously spent all my money at HMV buying all Queen's records and live dvds. Spent my young teenage evenings listening to all the records - learning all the words. I was mesmerised. I've not listened to them regularly for years, but I remember those nights right now like they were yesterday. I'm now stood here, surrounded by people that don't know any of the words to Stone Cold Crazy, watching Brian May and Roger Taylor look like a couple of dilapidated old guys doing an appearance at the end of Pop Idol where that week's winner gets to sing their party piece song with the original band as a treat. I didn't realise it until now standing here close to tears, but John Deacon had the right idea. Queen died on the 24th of November 1991 and they were the best band ever.

I went to the first Melbourne concert on 02/03/18. What a mind blowing experience it was!!

The boys were in their element - high energy talented musicians. Adam was super fantastic singing out the front and was on point capturing the essence of Queen's songs. Freddie would be super super proud of the boys performance on the night as were all of us listening, dancing to the music and remembering him prancing about on stage in his magnificent costumes

Best bits were Adam's shiny silver outfits,Brian's guitar solo that seemed to go on forever. Roger's drumming and singing throughout the night. The lighting was like New Years Eve fireworks!

Really everyone on stage and off stage were magnificent and made it a very memorable experience

10 out 10 from me. If they are in your area, spend your money and buy a ticket, you won't be disappointed.

There are rock stars and then there are rock gods. Mr May and Mr Taylor fall easily in to this category. Add to them a complete upstart in Adam Lambert and you have what I can only desribe as pure and utter genius. Yes the songs are all now getting on in age but the sheer fact that you hear the songs day after day everywhere shows the quality of the music this band has produced over the last 40 plus years. The show itself was musically and visually stunning. Adam Lambert openly admits he is no Freddie Mercury but he is vocally stunning and so well suited to this band. The appeal of Queen to all ages is undeniable and the audience was testament to this fact covering ages from 12 to 70. I have now seen Queen a total of 5 times and somehow they just seem to get better. Please see them you will not regret it. Long live QUEEN.

The Queen show and lineup is a must see. Adam Lambert is a good second to the great Freddie Mercury although Freddie will never be replaced. I've seen Queen with Freddie and they always have a great light and stage show. This light and stage show is one of the best I've seen lately. It's worth the price of admission. Brian May lit the stage up with his trememdous guitar playing. He's one of the greats. Roger Taylor has always be a favorite of mine on the drums and kicked so butt on this concert with his solo. The only disappointing thing about the whole experience was the 45 minute wait. If you are suppose to start the concert at 8pm, there is no need to start it at 8:45pm. Other than the late start time, this Queen show was great.

Wow! You know Queen is the Queen of showmanship. They outdo all others! Trap doors in the stage, screens to project laser images, pedestals to lift musicians, a huge disco ball, lasers, lights, confetti, and costume-changes are all fantastic. Adam Lambert is an amazing asset to this band, which includes his humility and humble love for the band and the audience. His personality of flamboyance and attitude compliments the show in a fantastic way. Loved every minute of it. Of course there are Freddie moments in this show that also will bring a tear to your eye cos you know you miss him so much. This was the best show I have seen in a very long time, if ever. It makes me regret not being able to see them in their hey day in the 80s.

From the intro to we will rock you to the final song which i cannot remember this show with 2 legends of British rock music was everything i had hoped it would be and so much more. The massive stage production made the show even more impressive. The vocals of Adam lambert make the band sound a little different to the late great Freddie but in his own words " i can only hope to be as good as the rock god" If you have seen the band before you know how great they are live, if not they are a band that has to be seen live to know just how amazingly talented they are. I really do hope there is another tour so i can go to see the wonder that is Queen.

Saw Queen + Adam Lambert last night in Newcastle and honestly it was the best concert i have attended. Sadly i am too young to have seen Freddie however i know that no one will ever be quite like him but Adam Lambert is definatly the best suited to tour with Queen. His flamboyant nature, witty comments and overall persona fit the part so well and his vocals were fantastic. Also the performance from Brain May singing Love Of My Life brought a tear to my eye with Roger Taylors vocals being amazing as well. Overall the show was perfection and i would happily pay to see them again tomorrow !

What a spectacular show! All of my favorites were played along with a couple of new favorites. Although difficult to choose from Brian May being elevated up with the planets or Adam Lambert arising from the floor on the motorcycle - I'd have to say the most memorable moment was when Brian May was about to sing/play the acoustic version of Love of my Life and he said we could all use a little light in our lives and the whole place lit up like a waterfall of light! It almost made my heart burst and will be one of my many concert moments that will remain in my memory bank forever!

This concert was the exceptional. The stage and especially the lighting were superb. The song choices were not the ones I had expected them to sing but were a perfect choice starting with We will Rock you which got everyone in the right mood for the rest of the show. My favourites would have to be Love of my Life which the audience mostly sang with a little help from Brian May so I think was the star of the show Radio Ga Ga and my all time favourite Bohemian Rhapsody which brought the house dow and got the entire stadium standing. All in all it was the concert of the year for me.

Shania Twain at AO Arena Manchester – setlist, support act, tickets and more

The Queen of Me tour is on its way to Manchester.

Daisy Jackson

Shania Twain, the queen of country music, will visit Manchester next week on her huge tour.

It’s her first world tour in almost five years (though there was a lengthy Las Vegas residency in between).

Shania Twain is set to perform at the AO Arena in support of new album  Queen of Me  on 3 February 2023 – her sixth full-length album.

The 49-date tour will see her performing in London, Dublin, Glasgow, Birmingham and Manchester next year.

Shania, a five-time Grammy Award-winner, has become the best-selling female artist in country music history thanks to hits like That Don’t Impress Me Much, Man I Feel Like A Woman, and I’m Gonna Getcha Good.

Here’s everything you need to know.

It’s slim pickings for tickets for Shania Twain’s AO Arena gig.

At the time of writing, the gig isn’t completely sold out, but most of the tickets are single seats.

There’s better availability in a couple of blocks which are essentially behind the stage, and that means an obstructed view. So not ideal.

Tickets are priced at £83.50 each, with quite a few tickets also being sold through Ticketmaster’s resale service.

What are the stage times?

Exactly stage times for Shania Twain aren’t likely to be announced until the week of the event itself.

But we do know that doors to the AO Arena will open at 6pm, and the show will start at 7.30pm.

Based on stage times from previous shows, Breland will perform at 7.30pm.

Shania Twain is then likely to hit the stage at around 8.30pm.

We’ll be sure to update this article as soon as stage times for Manchester are announced.

Who’s supporting Shania Twain in Manchester?

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Breland The Pen Point Guard ✍️ (@breland)

Country and hip-hop star Breland – who has long cited Shania Twain as an inspiration for his music – will be supporting her on her Manchester tour date.

He stunned audiences across the US supporting that leg of the Queen of Me tour, and will now be heading over to this side of the pond too.

Breland’s breakout single My Truck established him as a force on the current music landscape ahead of releasing debut album CROSS COUNTRY last year.

Setlist for Shania Twain’s Manchester concert

The below is Shania Twain’s setlist from The O2 in London earlier this month, which is likely to be simiiar (if not the same) as what we’ll get in Manchester.

Waking Up Dreaming Up! Don’t Be Stupid (You Know I Love You) I’m Gonna Getcha Good! Come on Over You’re Still the One Giddy Up! Any Man of Mine Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under? Honey, I’m Home Inhale/Exhale Air (with Breland) Party for Two (with Breland) Nah! / She’s Not Just a Pretty Face / Waiter! Bring Me Water! / When / Thank You Baby! (for Makin’ Someday Come So Soon) Pretty Liar From This Moment On Come on Over (A capella snippet with fan) When (A capella snippet with fan) Number One Forever and for Always Rock This Country! Encore: That Don’t Impress Me Much Man! I Feel Like a Woman!

The AO Arena has a few strict policies to keep gig-goers safe, so make sure to check  entry requirements carefully before you travel.

For example, only one small bag per person is allowed, and bags like backpacks, travel cases and laptop bags are not permitted inside the arena.

All bags are scanned on entry to check for prohibited items like laser pens, flares, projectiles, weapons, drugs and alcohol, and even selfie sticks.

Just a day before the venue was set to welcome its very first act, Co-op Live has announced that arena opener Peter Kay’s gigs have unfortunately been cancelled and postponed until later this month.

Both of Peter Kay ‘s highly-anticipated shows have ultimately had to be called off after Co-op Live revealed that the brand-new entertainment venue is simply not ready to welcome guests just yet, with work still to be completed on key areas of the building, namely power supply issues.

Issuing a regretful statement on social media, the arena has confirmed that the shows will now be rescheduled to Monday and Tuesday, 29-30 April.

This comes barely a day after its official opening event this past weekend which also saw thousands have their tickets cancelled for the accompanying ‘test gig’.

An important update from Co-op Live. Following our first test event on Saturday, regretfully we have made the difficult decision to reschedule our two opening performances by Peter Kay. These dates will move from 23 April and 24 Wednesday to Monday 29 and Tuesday 30 April. pic.twitter.com/SxW50Ph5hm — Co-op Live (@TheCoopLive) April 22, 2024

Addressing the situation online, Co-op Live said: “Following our first test event on Saturday, regretfully we have made the difficult decision to reschedule our two opening performances by Peter Kay…

“It is critical to ensure we have a consistent total power supply to our fully electric sustainable venue, the completion of which is a few days behind. Rescheduling gives us the extra time we need to continue testing thoroughly.

“This is vital to satisfy the rigorous set of guidelines and protocols that are necessary for a venue of this size. Peter Kay has very graciously agreed to perform his record-breaking comedy at Co-op Live on 29 (rescheduled from 23) and 30 (rescheduled from 24) April 2024.

“All tickets remain valid and ticket holders will be contacted by their point of purchase. Refunds will be available for those who can no longer attend. We are very sorry for the inconvenience that this change will undoubtedly cause for some.” Safe to say many of those looking forward to the show have been left frustrated.

Please tell me why I am finding this out of flipping TWITTER and have not been emailed?! — 🧜🏽‍♀️ Lauren Sparks – Book Siren 🧜🏽‍♀️ (@thickthighnolie) April 22, 2024

Speaking to The Manc , a Stockport gig-goer who had tickets said they had to find out via social media and that her group had still received no email notifying them about the cancellation, adding, “We just logged into the app to find the date on our tickets had been changed to next Monday”.

As for the beloved Bolton -born stand-up and British comedy legend himself, Kay added: “I’m truly gutted as I know how disappointing this will be for everyone with tickets, but obviously it’s a brand-new venue and it’s important that everything is finished and safe for full capacity audiences.

“Fortunately, we’ve been able to reschedule the shows to next week, (I’ll have to miss my Bums & Tums class) but hopefully I’ll see you then.”

The venue also went on to assure that they will still be hosting The Black Keys on 27 April in the lower bowl with 10k fans as planned and will continue to test the resilience of the venue and its operations for the time being.

They also reminded fans who previously missed out on tickets that due to dates being moved, tickets may now become available.
