Ford 6.8L V-10 Engine

The 6.8 L (413 CID) SOHC V10 is a variation of the Modular family created for use in large trucks.

Bore size is 90.2 mm (3.552 in) and stroke is 105.8 mm (4.165 in), identical to the 5.4 L V8. Both 2-valve and 3-valve versions have been produced. The 6.8 L uses a split-pin crank with 72° firing intervals and a balance shaft to quell vibrations inherent to a 90° bank angle V10 engine. The engine’s firing order is 1-6-5-10-2-7-3-8-4-9. The 2-valve version was first introduced in 1997, with a 3-valve non-VCT version to follow in 2005. The 3-valve engines were built alongside the 2-valve engines at Ford’s Windsor, Ontario LVL engine line, but moved production to the larger Windsor Engine Plant in 2009.

Fail-safe cooling system is designed to help protect the engine from potential damage due to a loss of coolant. If the engine overheats, it will automatically switch from 10-cylinder operation to alternating 5-cylinder operation. The vehicle will continue to operate, but with limited engine power. This system allows the driver to travel a short distance to obtain service or reach a service facility if the engine overheats. The distance that can be traveled depends upon vehicle load, outside temperature and road conditions

Ford V10 Firing Order

Known Problems:

The Ford V10 is a very reliable motor, and has been known to exceed 300,000 miles. It does have a few known problems:

Spark Plugs Shooting Out The The Heads:

Spark plugs on the V10 need to be checked and torqued if needed. They are known to come loose and shoot out of the cylinder head and strip out the threads. The repair involved reaming the spark plug hole, tapping it and inserting a helicoil to hold a factory spark plug.

Engine Running Rough / Misfiring:

If you’re having a problem with your V10 running rough / missing, it may be your Coil On Plugs (COP). The V10 has an ignition coil mounted on top of each spark plug. These can fail over time if they’re exposed to moisture. The ones closest to the firewall are the ones that most commonly fail (#5 & #10). The engine may not display a check engine light if it has a misfire. If you can get access to a diagnostic tool that can read the codes on the V10, you should be able to get codes from the bad COP. The code will directly correspond to the bad coil. The codes are:

Exhaust Manifold Studs Rust And Break:

The factory studs rust and break off causing an exhaust leak. The repair involves removing the remaining nuts to remove the exhaust manifold. Then a nut is welded on to the remaining stud. The heat of the welder usually causes it to come loose, and can be removed by using a socket on the welded nut.

Oil Consumption:

The V10 is known for using oil. It’s not uncommon for them to use up a quart of oil between oil changes.

If you have an oil leak from the drivers side of the engine block, it may be coming from the seal between the engine block, and oil cooler adapter.

• Provides safe haven for the family, carries lots of stuff, truck-tough underpinnings can take lots of abuse.
• Won't fit in a standard garage, drives like a loaded U-Haul, horrific fuel economy, hard to park, can't beat the Suburban at its own game.

Excursions get crystalline headlamp lenses for 2002, as well as "smart" intermittent front and rear wipers. XLTs gain a new auto-lock feature as well as standard third-row child seat tethers with a BeltMinder system. Excursion Limited receives a chrome side strip, automatic climate control and power-adjustable pedals. New options on XLT include power-adjustable pedals and a power front passenger seat. Limited models can be equipped with memory seats and pedals, second-row captain's chairs and redundant controls for climate and audio on the steering wheel. Both XLT and Limited will get a DVD-based entertainment system for rear-seat passengers later this year. Skid plates are no longer optional.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2002 Ford Excursion XLT 2WD 4dr SUV (5.4L 8cyl 4A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of N/A undefined in North Dakota.

Vehicle overview.

In a classic "bigger is better" move, Ford has upped the SUV ante by producing the largest Bradymobile yet. The Excursion offers more interior room and cargo capacity than the previous heavyweight title-holder, the Chevrolet Suburban. At the same time, Ford is touting the Excursion's "earth-friendly" aspects like an engine lineup that meets LEV standards (albeit for heavy-duty trucks, not passenger cars and light-duty trucks) and the fact that 85 percent of the Excursion, by weight, is recyclable (never mind that 85 percent of an Excursion still equals about 2.5 Honda Civics).

The Excursion's base engine is a 5.4-liter V8 (255 hp/350 pound-feet) on two-wheel-drive models or a 6.8-liter V10 (310 hp/425 lb-ft) on models equipped with four-wheel drive. Optional is a 7.3-liter V8 diesel that makes 250 horsepower and 505 lb-ft of earth-shaking torque. All engines come with a four-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment; no manual transmission is offered in the Excursion.

A trailer tow hitch comes standard, and the Excursion can tug 11,000 pounds in 4WD guise. For comparison, the Chevy Suburban 2500 equipped with the 8.0-liter Vortec V8 can manage 12,000 pounds. But the Ford holds slightly more cubic feet of stuff than the Chevy. The Excursion measures 146.4 cubic feet versus the Suburban's 138.4.

Two trim levels are available. The base XLT model includes running boards, remote keyless entry, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, an AM/FM/cassette/CD stereo, a 40/20/40 split-bench front seat and a third-row removable bench seat. Angle up to the Limited trim level, and you get a leather interior, automatic climate control, front captain's chairs, woodgrain trim, rear-seat audio controls, a trip computer, power rear quarter-windows, aluminum wheels, illuminated running boards, power signal aero mirrors and fog lamps. An optional rear seat entertainment system, which includes a 6.4-inch overhead LCD monitor, is DVD-powered this year.

Buy an Excursion, and you get tons of cargo- and passenger-carrying capacity, plus the security of knowing that no one else on the road will try to mess with you. Of course, you also get the huge inconvenience of not being able to park in certain garages or use some car wash facilities, and then there's the possibility that other people will assume that, by driving such a behemoth, you're trying to overcompensate for some other area in which you may be lacking. But if you're in the market for such a vehicle, and neither the Chevy Suburban nor the GMC Yukon XL does it for you size-wise, this is your SUV.

Just keep in mind that driving the Excursion is like piloting a loaded U-Haul, and you're going to have to become an ultra-safety-conscious driver.

No. Nothing exists. Heavy, boxy (lots of aero drag), 4 wheel drive (drivetrain losses), biggest imaginable engine that uses petrol and has lots of moving parts (10 cylinders, engine friction losses).

Imagine running this in Europe with European fuel prcies.

Ah, here we go. The most ultimate SUV ever made, tell Hummer to suck it. Sure they made a 6.0 turbo diesel with a little more power, but with this thing you can brag you have a V10.

6.8 Ford Triton V10 Specs: Motorhome Performance

When you are driving an RV or hauling a travel trailer, the engine matters. When you are going on your next vacation, make sure the engine in your truck or RV has the power and performance you need to have a trouble-free driving time.

When you want a top engine this is the one to look to. It is supposed to last hundreds of thousands of miles without too much trouble. Its 6.8-liter size produces 362 HP, with 4750 rpm and 457-foot pounds of torque at 3,250 rpm.

How Much Does a Ford v10 Engine Weigh

With a cast-iron block, you can expect this motor to weigh a ton. But the aluminum cylinder heads help keep the weight off. The average weight of this engine should be 620 pounds, give or take a few pounds.

The overall weight may change throughout the years it is in production but that is minor details that do not affect the performance of the engine. You still get top rpms, torque, and horsepower when you need to pull a heavy load.

The cast-iron block is durable and well built for maximum performance.

How Much hp Does a Ford v10 Have?

This will depend on the year the engine was made. the earlier models were initially given 305 horsepower. This was boosted to 310 at the turn of the century and stayed that way for the next 5 years.

Then in 2005, the horsepower was boosted again and it reached and remained at 362 hp till 2010. Other versions of this motor between 2000 and 2005 remained at 310 h.p and the 2014 to current year went back to 305 hp.

The amount of hp your Ford V10 gets will depend on the model of the truck or RV you are purchasing.

Ford v10 hp by Year:

The type of horsepower performance you will receive will depend on the model of truck or van the engine was placed in. Some versions came with a large amount of horsepower while others were not so powerful. Here is a list of some of the total horsepower you can get in different years:

• 1999 - this was basically the first year for this motor and the 6.8 Ford Triton V10 installed that year had 305 hp with 420 foot-pounds of torque. In comparison to the power stroke diesel which got only 235 hp and 500-foot pounds of torque, this was an upgrade in power.
• 2002 - this year was the third year of the upgrade Ford gave its motor. The engine had 310 hp and 425-foot pounds of torque while the power stroke diesel was also upgraded to 250 hp and 505-foot pounds of torque.
• 2008 - the motor produce din this year was the 4th year of the next upgrade and the engine had 362 hp with 457 foot-pounds of torque and the power stroke diesel was further upgraded to 350 hp and 625 foot-pounds of torque. This standard was kept for another 3 years for some models of Ford trucks and vans.
• 2014 - the F350 and 450 trucks had this motor but it went back to the 305 hp performance and remained that way up to the current year. The engine found in one model of an RV still had the 362 hp version
• 2015 - the same goes for this year’s engine model. The power did not change and both years’ motors should come with 457-foot pounds of torque. It is said that generation 3 is the strongest of all the motors produced by Ford in this series.
• 2018 - this year saw a downgrade in Hp for some RVs and possibly trucks. The 6.8 Liter V10 engine that has been installed in some models only reaches 320 hp. Still enough power to tow a TT or power a good Class A RV.

The change in power came when Ford decided to go to a 3 valve system with an independent cam in each cylinder. There were 2 intake valves and one exhaust valve in each cylinder making sure the engine got the power.

Ford v10 Bolt Torque Specs

The listed bolt torque specs are 40 Nm and 30-foot pounds then you need to do a +90 degree turn twice. If there is a problem, the bolts should be replaced by new ones as they cannot be reused.

Double-check with the owner’s manual as the different years may have been given slight differences like the hp was given. Or ask a qualified mechanic what is actually needed on these motors.

Ford 6.8 v10 Compression Specs

The 2011 6.8 liters V10 motor came with a 9,06:1 compression ratio. That ratio may change from year to year and you should use your owner’s manual to guide you for the specific motor you have in your vehicle.

The motor in many Class A RVs is a bit different than the ones put in the Ford Excursion and the Ford 350 and 450 trucks after the year 2004. From 1997 to 2004 the F250 to 450 and the F53 Motorhome had the same engine which produced only 305 hp.

The years 1997 to 2004 saw the F250 to 550 and the F53 motorhome have 310 hp and most likely the same compression ratio as did the years 2005 to 2010 when the motor was boosted to 362 hp.

Ford v10 Oil Change Specs

There seems to be a little discrepancy in the amount of oil you need to fill the oil tank on this engine. One source said 6 quarts of 5w20 is needed while another 2 listed the amount at 7 quarts of 5w20 motor oil.

As for frequency, check your owner’s manual as newer cars and upgraded oil products seem to last longer on the same oil than the old industry standard of 3,000 to 5,000 miles between changes.

It is best to stick to what the manual says about the amount of oil. While some people have added a third figure, 6 1/2 quarts, the manual states only 6 quarts are needed. Overfilling the engine with oil is as bad as not having enough oil in the oil tank.

It is possible that older V10 engines took more oil than the more recent models so double check to make sure. Err on the side of the information in your manual.

Ford V10 RV Performance Upgrades

Technology does make improvements as more research and development are performed. Here is one list of some of the upgrades given to this motor over the years as technology has found new solutions to old problems:

• One cam in each cylinder
• 3 valves in each cylinder (2 intake & 1 exhaust)
• SOHC design for better valve control
• Deep skirt engine block
• Low friction internal components
• Electronic throttle control and electronic sensors replacing the mechanical linkage
• Silent chain cam design which is supposed to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness
• Coil on plug ignition system
• 90,000-mile spark plug maintenance (under normal driving conditions)
• Fail-safe cooling system - if the engine loses its coolant and starts to overheat, the 10cylinder system switches to a 5 cylinder system. You lose power but protect your motor by allowing you to drive to the nearest repair shop. The distance you will get depends on load, outside temperatures, and road conditions.

Ford V10 RV Mpg

Like any motor out there, the V10 will have different mpgs due to the many different factors that can rob it of peak performance. Some people have reported 9 1/2 mpg on one tank traveling at 65 mph and 10 1/2 mpg while traveling at 60 mph on the second.

Towing a car saw a drop to 9 and 8 1/2 mpg with the same RV. others saw a lot lower performance as they reported 6 1/2 to 7 mpg towing a Cherokee and 8 to 9 mpg without towing anything.

That seems to be the average for all drivers driving under real road conditions. The variables in this situation are the condition of the roads you travel, the weight of the RV and the total load, your road speed, and wind resistance.

Since all of these variables can vary from state to state and road to road, your results will vary as well. The reason there is such a low mpg result is that the engine has to work harder under poorer conditions or heavier loads. Lighten up the RV and drive only in perfect conditions and you will see a rise in the total mpg you get.

Known Problems With the V10

As good as the 6.8-liter V10 engine can be, it is still not a perfect motor. While it can get up to and over 297,000 miles before needing any servicing or major repairs, it still does have its problems, and not everyone gets such great performance.

Here are some of the known problems you may encounter at some point in your ownership of this motor:

1. Launching spark plugs - these parts are known to get loose and when they do, the engine spits them outright through the cylinder head. That also strips the threads. To avoid this problem you need to check the spark plugs regularly and re-torque them if they feel loose. Re-tapping the threads may take a little time.

2. Engine misfire - the innovative coil on the design of the plugs is not without its issues. These can fail on you if they are exposed to moisture especially the two next to the engine firewall.

The error codes go from P301 to P310 with the last 2 digits indicating the coil that is misfiring. The coils are easy to replace when you locate the one misfiring.

3. Manifold studs rust and break - the factory studs are known to rust and when they do they create an exhaust leak. The repair should be handled by a trained mechanic who knows how to weld well.

4. It drinks oil - there are many models of this engine that have a thirst for oil. The engines can consume up to a quart between oil changes. In other words, even new V10s can burn oil on you so check this regularly as too little oil may cause you some problems later on.

5. Oil leaks - the little seal between the engine block and the oil cooler adapter. That is if the leak is on the driver’s side of the motor.

Some Final Words

Having a top moor under the hood is vital to any driving experience. It is even more so when you are driving a large RV or pulling a travel trailer. The power and performance at your fingertips make your on-the-road experience a lot better and easier to handle.

The Ford 6.8L V10 may be an ideal engine as it does provide you with both power and durability with some motors known to go over 300,000 miles. Just take a look at the specs to see how good it really is.
