We’re big fans of getting out of town for a few days…but where to go? How far can kids realistically ride in a car?  Kids can make it 3 or 4 hours, and then the questions begin and the movies get old. So we gathered the below list of destination ideas and resources for you!

 If you’re looking for fun day trips from KC, or better yet a weekend adventure, this is for you! Get your family out of town… even if it’s just for a weekend trip! 

> Cave Springs

If you’re looking for a super close trip, Cave Springs is worth considering. Because it is located in Raytown, you can make it there in less than 30 minutes!

There is a small waterfall, hiking trails, and other fun things to explore – learn more now.

> Visit the Sunflowers

There are 14+ sunflower fields near KC that you can visit with your family. This is a short day trip from the metro, which is perfect if you have small children…

> Ha Ha Tonka State Park Day Trip

You can make this its own weekend getaway or stop by while you are in the Lake of the Ozarks area. Plus, the drive on the day trip from Kansas City is beautiful!

Ha Ha Tonka State Park is located in the Lake of the Ozarks area. You can definitely make it one of the best weekend trips from Kansas City to the Ozarks.

Things to do at Haha Tonka:

There are lakes and trails, and you can head over to Branson for fun too! You can rent boats & jet skis at local marinas and swim till your hands turn pruney! If you like hiking or the outdoors in general, this state park is the place for you…  

One of the highlights is a turn-of-the-century castle built high on a bluff and more than 15 miles of walking trails. These trails lead to sinkholes, natural bridges, caves, and of course the lake itself!

Just head down for the day and pack a lunch for a picnic or decide to make a camping trip out of it!

Where to Stay:

If you’re wanting to stay for the night, there are many choices that make a great overnight trip for families:

> Canoe, Float, or Paddle the Niangua River

Lebanon, MO & surrounding areas (many campsites & rentals)

Things to Do on the Niangua River:

Your family can canoe, kayak, float in inner tubes, or raft down the Niangua River! This fun road trip near Lake of the Ozarks is great if your family loves the outdoors or is looking for an adventure. 

There are many fun campgrounds, cabins, & hotels in the area, so it will definitely make a fun weekend trip. Explore the many campsites & rentals available like the Floating R or NRO , which has free camping options available. Big Bear River Resort offers adorable cabins, canoes, camping & great fishing spots too!

Food on the Niangua River:

Depending on where you start your float trip, you can stop at The Gravel Bar & Grill at the Sand Springs Resort .

This restaurant is right off the river, so you can walk from your canoe. It has basic American food, offering something for everyone in your family. They also offer lodging at the resort, so if you are looking for a place to stay and rent your canoes, this might be the spot!

This day trip location is a little further away, so you may want to stay overnight – especially if you spend all day paddling on the river! These are just one of many great options:

> Tanganyika Wildlife Park

Tanganyika Wildlife Park is one of the most unique day trips from Kansas City. Not sure if it would be a day trip, since it is 3 hours, but could be a great weekend getaway in Kansas!  

It is a family-owned zoo with one of the largest animal collections in the state. There are over 40 exhibits, including several interactive stations for your kids to learn.

This is definitely a trip stop to add to your list.  

Tanganyika is the only place in the US where you can interact with ring-tail lemurs in their island habitat and feed Indian rhinos and pygmy hippos.

From most of the reviews that I read, it is a great place for younger kids —more animals in a smaller area to save their little legs (and grandparents too!)

There and back will be about 6 hours in total, so consider finding a place to stay for the night:

> Northwest Arkansas

Rogers, Fayetteville, Springdale

(3 hours, 15 minutes) If your family loves the outdoors, this is a great weekend getaway with your kids! 

Things to Do in NW Arkansas:

There are tons of great family things to do in Northwest Arkansas…not to mention the scenery! You can camp along the river, swim in the clear water, & have quality family time on your family’s vacation. Don’t forget to try canoeing while you are on the river!

There is the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks , Charlie & Willie George Park which features a fun spray park for the kids to cool off & TONS of great hiking. There are also unique things to do in NW Arkansas like, exploring the Dickson Street Bookshop or taking in a local museum.

You can visit the Museum of Native American History , Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art , or the Museum of Discovery – a fantastic kids’ activity! Last but certainly not least, you have to check out the Walmart Museum.

You also need to eat. So, be sure to check out Crepes Paulette – where you can watch your food be cooked – or The Farmer’s Table Cafe to try food created all by local Arkansas farmers. > Roaring River State Park

The Roaring River State Park is a great day trip from Kansas City when the weather is warm. You can also make it an overnight trip with camping if it’s a little further for you (Depending on what part of town you’re in) .

Things to Do in Roaring River:

There is so much nature to explore – it could fill your entire weekend! Trout fishing is obviously its biggest draw but there are great things to do and see for the whole family.  

The park is one of the premier trout fisheries in the nation and is stocked each night. There are also 7 trails that lead through the hills, including the Deer Leap trail that overlooks the fish hatchery. There are options to camp as well, including renting a cabin for the weekend.

> Eureka Springs, AR

(3 hours and 50 minutes)

Eureka Springs prides itself on its fabulous festivals. 

I personally love the St. Patrick’s Day celebration and have participated many times, but there are several more throughout the summer—just check to make sure they would be fun for the kids! It is the perfect place for a day or weekend trip from Kansas City!

Things to Do in Eureka Springs, AR:

The city itself is nestled in the Arkansas hills and has great hiking & outdoor adventures.

Check out Lake Leatherwood for hiking, fishing, canoeing & more outdoor activities.

Downtown Eureka Springs is also a great stop; filled with shopping, restaurants & historic character. There are tons of eccentric shops and art galleries to explore too. You can always find good music in many areas of the city, especially during Blues Weekend.

Best Food in Eureka Springs:

Parkside Pretzel & Snack Bar has everything pretzel – pretzel dogs, pretzel churros…use your imagination! Their reviews are stellar & also feature some healthy options. Eureka Springs Funnel Cake Factory also needs to be on your list. If you’re looking for more dinner food, check out the Rockin’ Pig Saloon for yummy ribs & burgers, or Emilio’s Italian Home Cooking . This delicious Italian spot is located inside an old house, with a more upscale feel.   

Plan on staying the night in either The Crescent or The Basin Park Hotel . Both have their share of ghost stories, but their true draw is how they pull you into the vintage feel of the city. I have stayed at both but I don’t think got an ounce of sleep because the lights were always on and I was constantly checking under the bed!

At nearly 4 hours away from the city, you’ll want to stop for a good night’s rest before you head back to KC. Here are some of the closest options:

> Rent a Cabin Near Kansas City

(1-3 hours depending on the cabin)

There are many nice cabins near Kansas City, as well as in the city limits. Whether you’re looking for a staycation or a weekend getaway in the woods, these cabins are always a great idea!

Find large cabins for multiple families, or small cabin sites perfect for a small family trip.

> Branson

(3 hours or less)

Branson is one of the best road trips from Kansas City, because of the windy roads and beautiful scenery. So, start planning a fun weekend getaway.

Things to do in Branson, MO:

There are so many things to do in and around Branson it is mind-blowing; shopping at outlets , dining, amusement parks, go-karts, bumper cars & boats, duck rides, museums, Table Rock State Park has ALL the fun a lake can provide & everything in between!

You could spend a day or two at Silver Dollar City alone. You can grab a coupon book for the outlets too!

Be sure to check out shows like The SIX , Silver Dollar City , and the MASSIVE go-kart tracks! Your family is sure to find kids activities everyone will love.

With Table Rock Lake nearby so you can cool off too. Visit  Table Rock State Park , which has fantastic camping, fishing, boating & great swimming areas! The park is situated on one of the largest lakes in the country, so you are sure to get a beautiful view.  Find more things to do in Branson now!

Best Food in Branson, MO:

On your drive down, stop at Lambert’s , “home of the throwed rolls” in Ozark, MO. It is home cooking at its finest…while they throw rolls at you to eat! Cakes & Cream is one of our family’s favorites. It is a 50’s diner with more desserts than you could imagine. You can get many old classics there.

For the best shakes & homemade pies in town, stop at Billy Bob’s Dairyland . They feature tasty treats as well as yummy burgers & other diner food. (They also have amazing service…)

Branson offers tons of hotels and resorts , but there are also some gems through Airbnb that offer more privacy for families. There are beautifully redone farmhouses , modern cabins and log cabins available too!

> Amana Colonies Weekend Trip

(4 hours, 29 minutes) While this is longer than the 3-hour trips from Kansas City, the Amana Colonies have something for everyone. Plus, if you are looking for a weekend trip, going further away from home may be fun!

Things to Do at Amana Colonies:

The colonies host events each weekend, from a dog speed racers competition to woodworking festivals, so there is always something to do.

They celebrate a rich heritage in arts and crafts and take visitors away from the hustle and bustle of busy life…check it out for your next weekend trip out of KC.

In fact, The Wurst Festival , a celebration of all things sausage , was named the Best New Event of 2015 by the Iowa Tourism Commission.

There are many places to stay camping, bed, and breakfasts, and hotels nearby.

Best Food in Amana Colonies:

If you like German-American food, try the Ox Yoke Inn for fresh, handmade food. The restaurant dates back to the 1940s, so there are definitely delicious reasons it is still in business. Or, head to the Ronneburg Restaurant for another take on German cooking. Both restaurants are highly rated.   

There are surprisingly quite a few places to stay in and around the colonies. Check them out below:

> Topeka Day Trip

(45 minutes to an hour)

Even though Topeka is our state capital, most people haven’t explored it even though it is one of the best day trips from Kansas City! With Topeka less than an hour from most places in KC, it is a cheap getaway from Kansas City.

Things to do in Topeka, KS:

There are tons of fun things to do like the Topeka Zoo & Shawnee Lake . Check out our top 6 things to do with kids in Topeka . 

You can even climb to the TOP of the state capitol building , which we definitely recommend during your day trip. Tour reservations are not needed for groups of 10 or smaller. The spiral staircase winds right up the middle of the capitol dome, so don’t look down!

Best Food in Topeka, KS :

Bobo’s Diner is a Topeka classic – handmade onion rings, fries & burgers! They were featured on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives, so you know it’s delicious.

If Mexican is your fam’s jam, El Centenario makes homemade dishes every day. If the kiddos are all in on awesome grilled cheese sandwiches. and mom & dad like craft beer, The Wheel Barrel is a must. They’re located in the NOTO Arts District and are famous for their gourmet grilled cheese & selection of craft beers. You can’t go wrong with anything on your list. 

If you decide to make a weekend of it, there are some family-friendly spots to stay:

> Roadtrip to Des Moines, IA

(2.5 hours – 3 hours)

While Des Moines isn’t the most attractive city to visit, there are tons of things to do with kids in Des Moines. Plus, the drive is manageable for a weekend trip or getaway. 

Things to Do in Des Moines, IA :

Explore Adventureland Themepark , which includes an outdoor waterpark, a theme park, and indoor pools. Or, your family can check out the Science Center of Iowa , where learning is brought to life.

Don’t miss Iowa’s wildest adventure at  Blank Park Zoo  or find fun things to do outside like Gray’s Lake Park, the Living History Farms , or the Iowa State Fairgrounds (if you can make the trip during the Iowa State Fair ).

There’s also the State Capitol Building you can tour and the downtown Des Moines farmer’s market – rated the 2nd best farmer’s market in America

There are fun kids’ activities here that make learning fun! There are also areas with tons of room to play, like Pappajohn Sculpture Park or the Des Moines Botanical Gardens . The sculpture park is a great place for kids to play while enjoying the artwork…plus it’s free!

You can also enjoy some yummy ice cream at Black Cat Ice Cream , just across the street from the sculpture park.

> Wichita, Kansas Day Trip

(3 hours, 20 minutes)

Things to do in Wichita, KS:

Wichita is home to the Museum of World Treasures , which has an extensive World War II collection as well as shrunken heads, dinosaurs, ancient Egyptians, and everything in between.

The Exploration Place , a science education center, is also filled with fun kids’ activities and things to do. Your kids will explore a variety of hands-on activities & exhibits…think of it as the Science City of Wichita. Check out the Exploration Place calendar of events to see what’s happening while you are there.  

There is also the Sedgwick County Zoo , the Botanical Gardens of Wichita , and the Cowtown Museum , which has FREE admission on Sundays from noon to 5 pm. Also, be sure to visit the Keeper of the Plains statue !

Wichita also has its’ own amusement park, All-Star Adventures ! There are go-karts, bumper boats, mini golf, slides, kiddie copters, a driving range, and other fun family activities. You can find other fun things to do with kids in Wichita easily too!

Best Food in Wichita, KS:

If you’re looking for yummy places to eat be sure to check out Dempsey’s Biscuit Co or Piatto for delicious pizzas. Also, be sure to check out the world’s largest mural painted by a single artist – Horizontes.   For an old-fashioned loose-meat burger and house-made root beer stop into Nuway ! The kids will love it.

Depending on where you’re planning on exploring, there are great options all over the city:

> Meade, KS

(camping, dalton gang hideout & state park).

If you’re into history, this is a small town worth visiting. The Dalton Gang Hideout was the home of Eva Whipple, the sister of the Dalton Gang outlaw group. A hidden tunnel was discovered to hide the gang members.

It’s now considered a Kansas tourist attraction, where you can tour the home and the tunnel (reconstructed version). There is also a historical museum!

In addition to the history, there is a beautiful state park – Meade State Park . There is a 360-acre area filled with wildlife, as well as campsites and a lake.

You can camp or fish at the lake with your family to enjoy the great outdoors!

If you don’t want to tent camp, there are other places in the area to stay overnight:

> Omaha Road Trip

(2 hours, 40 minutes)

Omaha, Nebraska is even shorter than a 3-hour trip from Kansas City. Close enough that you can handle the drive but far enough away that it feels like a getaway…

Things to Do in Omaha, NE:

Take advantage of this fun & inexpensive city with these things to do with kids. There is the famous Henry Doorly Zoo , the Wildlife Safari Park , the Aerospace Museum, The Omaha Children’s Museum, the Rose Theater , & tons of free things to do throughout the year. Admission to the Joslyn Art Museum is always free!

There are also beautiful state parks like The Eugene T. Mahoney State Park , which features a suspended ropes course in the trees. There is also a pool, wave pool, splash park, horse riding, mini golf & disc golf, Venture Climb rock climbing & other unique activities. This park has more to do than almost any we have seen…

Best Food in Omaha:

You can also find tons of great restaurants like Mayne Street Market , Yoshitomo (if your fam likes sushi), Hurry Bird (for some creative, delicious breakfast and lunch burritos), or Johnny’s Cafe for delicious food near the old stockyards!

> St. Louis Road Trip

(3 to 3 and a half hours)

Depending on where you are road-tripping from in Kansas City, St. Louis isn’t that far. There are too many things to do with kids in St. Louis for just one day, so make a weekend road trip out of the day trip!

Things to Do in St. Louis:

You can explore the St. Louis Gateway Arch , World Bird Sanctuary , St. Louis Aquarium (the perfect place for kids), Magic House Children’s Museum , and many other kids’ activities. Take a stroll through the Missouri Botanical Gardens, which features a beautiful Japanese garden.

Or, check out Forest Park , which is larger than New York’s Central Park!

Best Food in St. Louis:

If you check out the arch in the morning, be sure to try Chili Mac’s Diner !

Crown Candy is definitely worth a visit. This is a century-old Soda Fountain restaurant that is a St. Louis classic. You will feel like you stepped back in time to 1913 as soon as you step in their doors.

After you try their candy, ice cream & delicious food…it’s game over. Their hearty BLT is stacked to the brim (overflowing really…) with yummy bacon! There are also some delicious donuts at O’Fashion Donuts . Head to The Hill and enjoy some great Italian food at the many restaurants located there.

> Roadtrip to Joplin

(2 hours, 30 minutes)

Things to Do in Joplin, MO:

There are tons of fun things to do in Joplin during your day trip from KC! You can visit a giant waterfall – Grand Falls , George Washington Carver National Monumen t , or walk around downtown Joplin . The Sunshine Lamp District is even named after Joplin’s booming mining days, so you’ll be trendy while walking through history!

There are cute stores to shop, yummy restaurants to try, & even an indoor adventure playground for the kiddos. You can also visit the winery if it’s more of an adult-only road trip! 

Best Food in Joplin:

If BBQ is your thing, you can’t miss Big R’s BBQ & Pies . The locals love this spot for its great BBQ and you can finish off with one of their great pies, so you don’t want to skip this spot!

The Red Onion Cafe is located in a 100-year-old building & highly rated across the board. They serve American food in a relaxed setting – be sure to try the Smoked Chicken Dip! 

> Columbia, MO

(2 hours, 10 minutes)  

Things to Do in Columbia, MO:  

At MU, you can visit the Museum of Art & Archaeology or the Francis Quadrangle , with giant pillars towering overhead. Or, check out the Columbia Art League in downtown Columbia.  Besides visiting The University of Missouri, there are other fun things to do with kids like nature parks.

If your family likes the outdoors, there are many great parks & hiking trails like Rock Bridge Memorial State Park , Finger Lakes State Park , Stephens Lake Beach & Park , or Capen Park .

Finger Lakes State Park is probably the most unique thing you can do, with trails for ATVs, motorbiking, & four-wheelers. There is also a lake where you can go scuba diving, swimming, fishing & non-motorized boating. You can rent kayaks & canoes at the park, so all you have to bring is your family!  

Also visit the Shelter Gardens , a 5-acre botanical garden that is perfect to take a stroll…  

Best Food in Columbia, MO:  

If you’re looking for healthy options, try the Main Squeeze Natural Foods Cafe , which is rated very highly.  If you’re in the mood for good-old deliciousness, try Just Jeff’s Street Food , they have two locations.

They supposedly have the best chili dogs in all of Columbia. Addison’s is also a yummy place to try. Their nachos are our favorite!  You can’t go wrong by stopping for a pizza at Shakespeare’s Pizza, a Columbia tradition since 1973 with 3 locations.

> Eagles Bluff Conservation Area

Columbia, MO 65203

(2 hours, 6 minutes)

If you’re looking to get away from the city…this is the place for you. There are miles and miles of nature to be explored – the perfect place for a nature weekend getaway. Plus, the shorter drives make this one of our favorite day trips from Kansas City…  

There is the Katy Trail State Park , which provides trails to bike, hike, or even ride horses! You can also explore other regions of the conservation area with fishing, hiking trails, camping, bird watching & other fun outdoor activities. 

> Rock City

(2 hours, 49 minutes)

About 20 miles away from Salina, there are giant spherical rocks, formed when Kansas was under an ocean. There are over 200 rocks you can explore!   You have a couple of options.

1. Rock City is the larger of the 2 attractions, with close to 200 rock formations, but costs $3.

2. Mushroom Rock State Park , which is smaller, is free to the public. If your children love to run around or climb on things, this is a fun place to explore. Check out the website to see cool pictures of mushroom rocks !     

> Go on a Safari

Looking for more unique day trips from Kansas City? This safari is just minutes away from Springfield, MO. (See our Springfield Guide below). How about a wildlife excursion…it’s a drive-thru animal safari in the middle of Missouri! There are over 450 animals for your family to come to visit. 

While there is not a ton to do, the Safari is definitely a unique experience that makes it worth the day trip drive from Kansas City. Make it a short getaway with an overnight stay for the family all together!

> Atchison, KS

Because Amelia Earhart was born in Atchison, you can learn about her at the Amelia Earhart Museum , at her birthplace. Also, visit the Atchison County Historical Society Museum located in the historic 1880 Santa Fe Depot. Check out the Atchison Rail Museum .

If you want to enjoy the outdoors, hang out at Jackson Park or cross the Missouri River and visit the Lewis & Clark State Park . 

Where to eat:

Grab a sandwich at one of these yummy stops: Mr. G’s , JW Boy’s BBQ , or Willie’s Sports Pub . You can’t go wrong.

> Springfield, MO

(2 hours 40 minutes)

Things to Do:

Shop the original, and one of the largest, Bass Pro Shops ! Explore the incredible caves of the Ozarks or go on a safari at The Wild Animal Safari in nearby Stafford, MO.

Find your favorite style of cashew chicken at one of these places on the official Cashew Chicken Trail.

Step back in time on Route 66 and grab a burger at Red’s Giant Hamburg or eat at a classic diner like Casper’s .

The visitor education centre should also not be missed, not least because of its thoughtfully designed architecture, which is meant to blend in with the nature that surrounds it.

2. Lake Jacomo

The freshwater Lake Jacomo stretches for 970 acres and is located in Jackson County, where it is one of Parks and Recreation’s most popular attractions.

Interestingly, its name is a portmanteau of Jackson County, MO, utilising the first letter of each word.

The lake offers loads of water-based activities, including wind surfing, sailing, and various types of boating and fishing.

Make sure to pay a quick visit to Fort Leavenworth while you’re there, which houses the Buffalo Soldier Memorial Park and the Frontier Army museum, both of which provide an excellent history lesson.

Atchison is the childhood home of Amelia Earhart, and she is still highly celebrated in the town. The Amelia Earhart Birthplace is the actual home where Amelia was born and raised. It sits on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River and tours detailing her life, accomplishments, and mysterious disappearance are available to the public. Every July, the town also hosts the Amelia Earhart Festival. 

If you have an interest in the paranormal, stop by Atchison’s Sallie House , reportedly one of the most haunted houses in America. Railroad junkies should make a quick stop in the Atchison Rail Museum where you can tour their collection of numerous antique rail cars and take a ride on the mini-train.

Stroll through historic Carthage Square and visit the Jasper County Courthouse, an absolutely stunning feat of architecture in the heart of Carthage. 

If you have an interest in Civil War history, then you probably know a bit about the battle of Carthage. It was the first full-scale battle of the American Civil War, and this area was truly torn apart by the conflict. Battle reenactments are pretty common at the Battle of Carthage State Historic Site and learn even more at the Battle of Carthage Civil War Museum . 

Carthage also happens to have an abundance of Maple trees. If you can, visit in the fall when their gorgeous colors are ablaze! 

3. Concordia, Kansas

Distance:  211.9 miles

Travel Time: 3 hrs

Concordia is pushing it for a day trip, we admit, but it is well worth the drive. The historical city is loaded with interesting sites for the history buff. Stop in the Cloud County Historical Museum for a brief history of the area. 

Then, head for the National Orphan Train Complex . The Orphan Train saga seems completely unimaginable today, but from 1824 through 1929, countless orphans and destitute adults were loaded aboard trains in the east and sent to the western frontier for a new life. The museum offers an interesting look at the history of the orphan railroad and the people who took the journey. It also has a fully-restored antique passenger car, The Legend, that serves as the education center for the museum. 

Last up, make sure to stop in the POW Camp Concordia . The little museum details the horrors of what WWII POWs went through during their stay in America. Knowledgeable tour guides will lead you through the complex and guard tower. It is an eye-opening experience for most Americans.

4. Independence, Missouri

Independence Missouri is home to the 33rd president, Harry S. Truman. It is also the location of the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum , the Truman Home, and the Truman Depot . Truman lived most of his life in Independence, and you will find his visage around every corner. 

Take one of the Pioneer tours offered in town, where a covered wagon will escort you to all the major sites, and then visit the best example of Second Empire architecture in the U.S. at the 1881 Vaile Mansion. The house is huge, gorgeous, and possibly haunted, so enter if you dare.

At Ha Ha Tonka, you have natural springs, caves, sinkholes, and a huge natural bridge to explore. Not to mention the park has its own castle, or at the least the ruins of one. The house was built by a prominent Kansas City businessman at the turn of the 20th century. It’s pretty awesome to stand in castle ruins and overlook the bluff to picturesque Lake of the Ozarks. It is especially beautiful during the fall months when the trees lining the bluff are bright yellow, orange, and red.

Louisburg is a small town around 40 miles south of Kansas City and is home to the Louisburg Cider Mill where you can learn everything you need to know about apple cider. It’s a great stop for a warm day when you just want to be outside and enjoy nature’s bounty.

Next, move from the ground to the sky and visit Powell Observatory. The observatory was built in 1984 and now has one of the largest telescopes in a 5-state area, the Ruisinger Telescope. In addition to peering through the scope, the observatory also hosts public education nights on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of May-October. It’s one of those spots that will take you by surprise, offering a lot of local culture, a fascinating art scene, and world-class experiences for a fraction of the price you would pay in other US cities.

Just like any city, it’s to break away from the hustle and bustle and explore a bit of the surrounding areas. Taking a day trip from Kansas City is a great way to experience ranch lands and lesser-known Midwestern regions.

Staying in Kansas City is not something the average US visitor does. With a vast history and a thriving Jazz music scene, its worth a visit.

The city has a relatively small city center, making it easy to walk around once you’re in the heart of downtown. Exploring neighborhoods on foot is pretty common. Crossroads Arts District, Power & Light District, Garment District, and River Market are all pedestrian friendly. That being said, the city is a car-dominated location.

Renting a car is the most popular way to get around and take some Kansas City day trips. All the usual car rental companies can be found, with the largest branches located at the Kansas City International Airport and near the Amtrak Union Station. Parking is typically free and easy to find, which is almost unheard of in other cities.

Kansas City also has an extensive public transportation network. The local buses are called RideKC and are reliable, on time, and operate extensive routes around downtown. A one-way fare will cost you about $1.50 and can be purchased using cash on the bus. Alternatively, you could buy a $3-day pass for unlimited rides or purchase a MetroCard that you can top up as you go.

One of the best ways to get around downtown and the city center is on the Kansas City Streetcar. It is totally free to use and runs from the Crown Center to the River Market District. It makes 16 stops over the two miles, operating from 6am to 12am, with limited hours on weekends.

Here are some of my favorite half-day trips to take from Kansas City. From horse riding adventures on local ranches, to visiting small historical towns and everything in between, there’s something for everyone.

Are you ready to get to know this hidden gem a bit better?

Holden, MO 

Holden is a small town about fifty miles from Kansas City, and is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing day trip away from the city. There are no regular bus routes from Kansas City to Holden, so your best bet would be to rent a car and make the hour journey on your own steam. 

The old town, that was built in 1857 to house Pacific Railroad builders, has a super small-town vibe and charming atmosphere. It’s one of those places where all the locals know each other personally.

To get your trip started, head over to the main street where you’ll find a bunch of cozy eateries, local products, and boutique shops.

If you’re looking for some fresh air and sunshine, Holden City Park and Holden Downtown Park are great places to go for a low-key picnic with your family. Feel free to pick up some fresh produce in town before settling at the park for a slow afternoon.

There’s also a 380-acre lake in Holden, which really is a beautiful spot to explore on a sunny day. You’ll find anglers and picnicking families dotted around the lake on weekends.

LaCygne, KS

LaCygne is a small city in Linn County, about an hour south of Kansas City. Its odd name comes from the river that runs through the town, known as the Marais des Cygnes River. Although it’s classified as a city, LaCygne is really a small town with one main street. Only about 1000 people live there!

Why is it worth a half-day trip, you ask? Well, LaCygne lies in one of the most beautiful valleys in the area, making it the perfect spot for hiking, walking, and camping. Not only is the city built on the banks of a river, but it’s also home to a lake, which is a popular place to fish, do outdoor exercise, picnic, and just get a bit of fresh air.

I would highly recommend taking a stroll through the historic downtown. The buildings on the main street were built in the early 1800s and look like a classic western film set – ideal for a photo opportunity! The LaCygne Historical Society is open on weekend afternoons, and the tour guides will be happy to tell you a bit more about the history of their hometown.

Lawrence, KS 

Lawrence is a small city just east of Kansas City that has been labeled as one of the most vibrant centers for shopping, dining, and entertainment in the Midwest. If you drive yourself, it will only take you about 45 minutes.

But it wasn’t always a hotspot for food and culture. In fact, this town was the location of a heartbreaking Civil War event. You can learn more about this battle through the carefully curated exhibits at the Watkins Museum of History and the Wakarusa River Valley Heritage Museum.

Massachusetts Street (locally known as ‘Mass’), has even been called one of the most beautiful main streets in the USA. Take a stroll down this wide main street which is lined with lush trees and period buildings to get a real taste of the city. Of course, you’ll be able to pick and choose from some of the city’s best eateries along this road.

Just a quick hour’s drive from Kansas City, you’ll find the Kansas State Capital of Topeka. Although this city is much smaller than Kansas City, it’s jam-packed with interesting things to see and do.

I think Topeka is a great destination for a weekend away from the city, but it’s also easily done in a day trip. It is even connected with Kansas City via railway.

One of the most popular things to do is to tour the State Capitol, which is a historic collection of buildings with a wealth of history. If art and culture are more your speed, the Mulvane Art Museum is definitely worth a visit. It is home to some incredible local and international artworks. The Children’s Discovery Center is a crowd favorite that has interactive exhibits perfect for young kids.

Once you’ve got a good dose of culture and history, head to the banks of Lake Shawnee for some fresh air. There are loads of picnic spots and walking trails open to the public. In fact, over a million people visit this gorgeous lake each year to play golf, ball games, fish, and camp.

There are a ton of things to do in Kansas City , but it’s always fun to travel outside and see more of what the region has to offer. These full day trips in Kansas City are perfect for getting out and exploring.

The Missouri River, MO

The Missouri River runs directly through Kansas City. As a matter of fact, it’s the longest river in the States, running all the way from the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi River 2341 miles away. Aside from having a super fascinating archeological history and supporting generations of indigenous populations, the river is one of the most beautiful places to visit for a day trip in Kansas City.

Of course, you could simply visit the section of the river that runs through the city. But your best bet would be to venture out to a less populated area and explore the more rural parts of the Missouri River.

Some of the most popular riverside activities include bird watching, boating, camping, canoeing and kayaking, hiking, and mountain biking.

Lake Jacomo, MO 

Lake Jacomo is a great place to spend a day if you don’t feel like heading too far out of the city. It’s only a 25-minute drive from downtown. The beautiful lake spans 970 acres, and sits in the heart of Fleming Park.

For boat lovers and sailors, this is the place to be in Missouri! There is a limit on the amount of horsepower you can use on a boat, which makes Lake Jacomo one of the more peaceful lakes to visit. 

If you’re more interested in history than boating, visit the Missouri Town 1855 for a ‘step back in time’ experience. This whole town is basically a living museum, with over 25 different buildings housing historical tools and furniture set exactly how it used to be in the mid-1800s. 

Base yourself around Lake Jacomo for a more quiet Kansas City experience, which is only a short drive from the city center. Why not rent this artsy home for the best of both worlds.

How about spending a day exploring one of Kansas’s most historic cities? Ottawa is just a short hours drive away, and is a top spot for a day trip from Kansas City. Founded in the 1800s, it has a rich past rooted in Civil War and Native American history.

The best way to explore the city is on foot, admiring the exquisite 19th and 20th-century architecture along the main street of the town. Not only is downtown the perfect setting for a picturesque stroll, but it’s where you’ll find some great boutique shops and restaurants.

If you prefer a bit more structure, there are some great museums that can kick start your adventures. I recommend starting at the Old Depot Museum which visually recreates moments in history from over a century ago. You’ll be able to see what an old school, dentist’s office, and general store looked like when the city was first founded.

Stockton, MO

Right in the heart of Missouri’s Cedar County, Stockton is a small city that is home to the Stockton State Park. The area is only a two hour drive south, a super easy getaway.

Stockton Lake, located in the park, is a bunch of bodies of water that make up a vast lake. It’s a local favorite for sailing enthusiasts and kayakers, and is also known for being one of the most beautiful areas for hiking and rock climbing in the area.

There’s a marina and a beach, which are the perfect spots to relax and grab a local meal on your day trip from Kansas City.

Powell Gardens, MO

Powell Gardens are located just forty five minutes east of Kansas City. I love this spot – you’ve gotta spend a full day exploring the gardens and lounging around in the sun.

The gardens are beautifully designed with eight themed display gardens, different exhibitions, and attractive architecture. If you want to get your steps in, there’s a three-mile nature trail that runs through the 175 acres worth of garden.

After your walk you can dig into some delicious local food at one of the park restaurants, which are prepared using homegrown ingredients from the garden.

The gardens are typically open from 9am to 5pm, and charge an admission fee of $10 for one adult and $4 for kids.

You could choose to stay near the gardens in this charming cottage , which is only a short drive back into the city center.

Saint Joseph, MO 

St. Joseph is a city with a unique history located just 50 miles north of Kansas City. It’s most well known for being the home of train and bank robber, outlaw, and infamous guerilla Jesse James.

It’s a relatively large city that sees over 70 passenger trains run through it daily on its eleven railroads. No wonder Jesse James got into the train robbing industry!

The town was established in the early 18th century as a popular trading post. But it wasn’t until the California gold rush that St. Joseph grew to be what it is today.

Naturally, the city is packed with historical buildings and unique sites. The Patee House Museum is a beautiful old building that was made famous for being the headquarters for the infamous Pony Express. There are tons of old cars, trains, carousels, and other western artifacts to see. 

If you want to see some of the beautiful period homes, head to the Museum Hill Historic District. You could even spend a night here, and stay in a historic vineyard mansion carriage house .

My favorite trip from this list would have to be a day in Powell Gardens. It’s not too far from the city and is a beautiful spot for both a relaxing, or an adventurous trip. The Best Day Trips From Kansas City, Missouri

Whether you’re in the mood to relax lakeside in Missouri’s favorite resort town, soak in the culture in nearby Omaha, or board a wine trolley and explore vineyards in a nearby city, there are plenty of adventures awaiting, all three hours or less away by car.

Excelsior Springs: Nine Rounds and Relaxation

Hit nine rounds at the Excelsior Springs Golf Course before heading to the town’s centerpiece, The Elms Hotel & Spa . Open since 1912, the historic hotel has checked in guests including Al Capone, Harry S. Truman, and Jack Dempsey. Get a day pass and explore The Grotto, an underground spa with an exfoliation bar, saunas, and hot tub. Or book a service like a massage or facial in the cave-like setting. The grounds can keep you entertained all day long between relaxing and dining at 88 at the Elms or the café. If you’re looking to be spooked, The Elms offers nightly ghost tours that play on the resort’s history. On your way home, stop at the Dari B Drive-In for old fashioned ice cream.

Getting There: Get to Excelsior Springs in approximately 35 minutes by car via I-35 North.

Travel Tip: During high-volume times, day passes to The Grotto may be unavailable – call ahead and book one in advance to be safe. 

Lake of the Ozarks: Lakeside Fun in the Sun

Sure it has inspired a hit show, but the real Lake of the Ozarks is a family-friendly resort town. Missouri’s favorite place for a lake vacation, there are a multitude of ways to spend your time between golfing, fishing, dining, boating, or just lounging on one of the two public beaches. Go to Iguana Watersports for boat and jet ski rentals. Head underground to Jacob’s Cave for a mile-long walk to see stalactites up close. If you’re bringing your kids, take them to Miner Mike’s , an indoor “adventure town” with games and prizes.

Getting There: Two hours and 45 minutes via I-70 E in a car.

Travel Tip: The official Lake of the Ozarks season runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Although things are open year-round, it is a town best enjoyed during the summer months.

Weston, Missouri: A Historic Distillery

Cross the Missouri River and transport yourself back in time. Weston, Missouri is home to Holladay Distillery , one of the oldest continuously operating distilleries in the United States. Take a tour of the facility to see its historic buildings, world-class bottling facilities, and taste their White Dog bourbon. Lantern-led tours are also offered at night for a different experience. After the tour, go to Main Street in nearby Platte City to McCormick on Main. One part shop and one part bar, the rustic spot offers samples of other McCormick Distilling products. Once you’ve narrowed down your favorite, or let’s be honest favorites, full-sized bottles are available to purchase as well as souvenirs and t-shirts.

Getting There: By car, Weston, Missouri is 45 minutes from downtown Kansas City. Or if you’re already at the Kansas City International Airport (MCI) you can take a 20-minute shuttle ride directly to the distillery. 

Travel Tip: Walk-ins are accepted based on availability, so try to make a reservation in advance. A majority of the tour is outside so wear comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing.  

Lawrence, Kansas: Sunflowers and Sunshine

The home of the University of Kansas’ Jayhawks, Lawrence, Kansas is a quaint college town. Along its historic main street, Massachusetts Street, there is shopping, spas, restaurants, and bars. But Lawrence is worth the trip for Grinter Sunflower Farms alone, where sunflowers bloom across dozens of acres. It’s a stunning sight any time but particularly during sunrise and sunset, perfect for a photo op. Nearby Clinton Lake is a popular spot for camping, but you don’t have to stay overnight to enjoy it. There are hiking trails, fishing ponds, sand volleyball and disc golf courses if you’re looking for outdoor activities.

Getting There: A 40-minute drive by car will get you to Lawrence, KS. From the airport, there are also many 24/7 shuttle services that can take you directly to the town, for a fee.

Travel Tip: If you drive via I-70, you will have to pay a toll prior to entering Lawrence.

Wichita, Kansas: Explore by Streetcar

The Little Arkansas River runs right through Wichita, making it one of the most picturesque – and largest – cities in Kansas. The best way to explore is by hopping on the Q Line Trolley, which is free. Reminiscent of New Orleans’ iconic streetcars, the Q Line runs from Delano to Clifton Square, allowing you to see the city hands-free without focusing on your car's GPS. A must-see is the Cowtown Museum . A replication of 1870s Wichita, the open-air museum brings a Wild West town back to life in painstaking, life-size detail. Walk down Main Street, see a one-room schoolhouse, and even businesses like banks, drugstores, and a blacksmith. At night, go to the Keeper of the Plains, a statue on the bank where the Arkansas and Little Arkansas Rivers meet. Nightly, the “ring of fire” under the statue is set ablaze.

Getting There: Take I-70 W to 1-35 S by car and you’ll arrive in Wichita in just about three hours.

Travel Tip: If you visit in April, you’ll get to experience the Wichita Jazz Festival , which has been put on every year since 1972.

Omaha, Nebraska: Culture and Sculpture

If day-tripping to a different state interests you, Omaha, Nebraska is a great choice. The Joslyn Art Museum has pieces in its permanent collection by Andrew Wyeth, Thomas Hart Benson, and Ed Ruscha. After you’re through perusing the exhibits, head outdoors to the Peter Kiewit Sculpture Garden. Nearby, the Discovery Garden is a bright and inviting outdoor space for children with interactive artwork. For more culture, continue on to the Durham Museum , inside Omaha’s Union Station which frequently hosts different exhibits and also houses the Byron Reed Gallery of ancient coins, medals, and other memorabilia. Five minutes from the Durham Museum, see the original site of Lewis and Clark’s exploration along the riverfront, where the duo landed in 1804.

Getting There: By car, Omaha clocks in at two minutes shy of three hours.

Travel Tip: General admission to the Joslyn Art Museum is free.

Kingsville, Missouri: An Oasis Awaits

Containing nine extensive gardens each with their own theme, The Powell Gardens are a modern oasis. Lush grounds, flora, and idyllic ponds are transformed regularly each season and for various festivals hosted throughout the year including the Festival of Butterflies, Booms & Blooms, Fall Fling: Through the Looking Glass, and the Festival of Lights. Feel free to wander autonomously or enrich the experience through activities. The Powell Gardens offers activities for kids, conservatory talks, and even photography workshops. Take a snack break at any point at Café Thyme or the Refresh Snack Stop.

Getting There: An hour by car via MO-350 E to US-50 E.

Paola, Kansas: A Wine Trolley and Vineyard Tours

Paola, Kansas is home to a surprising amount of wineries and vineyards. Starting it all in 2001 was Somerset Ridge Vineyard and Winery which produces approximately 5,000 cases annually. All within a 15-minute drive, nearby NightHawk Vineyard and Winery , White Wind Farms, and Middle Creek Winery make up the Somerset Wine Trail. Explore on your own or board the Miami County Trolley, which will connect you and your group to each location in a charming ride. Though it’s not part of the official trail, make sure to also stop by the Louisburg Cider Mill . Open year-round, you can try some of their famous apple cider, fruit butters, or doughnuts — get some enjoy on the ride home. 

Getting There: 50 minutes on I-35 S by car.

Travel Tip: Call the Miami County Trolley to arrange pickup and drop-off based on your chosen itinerary at 916-306-3388. 

Rocheport, Missouri: Get Active Alongside Scenic Views

If you’re looking for a more active day trip, Rocheport is the place for you. Bike or hike along the scenic Katy Trail , or book a guided canoe or kayak trip down the Missouri River through Mighty Mo Canoe Rental . Given Rocheport’s proximity to St. Louis, it’s no surprise that it is home to the Budweiser Clydesdales which you can see up close at Warm Springs Ranch by buying a ticket in advance.

Getting There: Halfway between Kansas City and St. Louis, Rocheport is just a 90-minute drive by car.

Travel Tip: If you choose to explore the Katy Trail by bike, they can be rented from Bike Stop Café . Fuel yourself with a cup of coffee before you head out. 

Emporia, Kansas: Magical Landscapes

Hays House Restaurant

When you think of Kansas, you’re probably picturing tallgrass sprawling across the landscape as far as the eye can see across the plains. Go for a leisurely drive though Emporia and the surrounding area and when you’re finished stop at Hay’s House in Council Grove, the oldest restaurant in Kansas, started by Daniel Boone’s grandson. Their skillet fried chicken and chicken fried steaks are a must-order.

Getting There: A one hour and 50-minute drive on I-35 South.

1. St. Louis

A 5-hour drive east of Kansas City lies the city of St. Louis, a hub for outdoor activities , beautiful parks, biking along nature trails, and eating delicious barbecues. The town sits at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. It is home to the incredible Missouri Botanical Garden, a must-see for kids and families.

2. Lawrence

Situated in Douglas County, just 40 minutes from the city, Lawrence is a vibrant college town with a beautiful live music scene and a thriving population of young folks attending the University of Kansas. Lawrence is home to Clinton Lake State Park, where people enjoy a marina, sports fields, picnic areas, and camping.

Just over a half-hour drive from the city, Watkins Woolen Mill State Historic Site is a proper visit to the area's history. This historic site features a building and a three-story woolen mill that has been around since the 1870s. History buffs and their children can go to the visitor center, which provides interesting information about the Watkins family and the state park, as well as miles of hiking trails to meander on.

Kansas City has a ton of nearby adventures that make great day trips. If you’re looking for a quick trip for a day or overnight, there are lots of day trips from Kansas City. Whether you’re looking for cute small towns with adorable shops or outdoor adventures like paddling and epic hikes, here are 10 Best Day Trips from Kansas City for everyone! 

All of these day trips from Kansas City are less than two hours away, making them a quick drive for a fun mini trip. I divided them based on their distance from Kansas City, either 30-minutes, an hour or 2 hours away. If you’re looking for a quick getaway, these day trips from Kansas City are for you. As a native Kansas Citian I have compiled the best insider tips for each location.

Day Trips from Kansas City

Around half an hour from kansas city, weston, missouri.

Weston, Missouri is only half an hour north of Kansas City, Missouri near the Kansas City International Airport. Weston is a small town, but it has a lot of options for families, couples, friend trips, and outdoor lovers. Weston Bend State Park has paved and unpaved trails, an overlook with an expansive view of the Missouri River, tobacco barns, and some of the best fall foliage in the region. 

If your family likes u-pick farms, then Weston, Missouri is a great place to go. Weston Vineyard and Orchard has lots of u-pick options throughout the year as well as a pumpkin patch. Weston Red Barn Farm has free farm animals you can see much of the year as well as an annual pumpkin patch. 

Before heading out of town, grab a bite to eat at the Tin Kettle or O’Malley’s. Smithville Lake, Smithville, Missouri

At just under 40 minutes north of Kansas City, Smithville Lake is the perfect nearby getaway. You can rent a stand-up paddleboard or kayak from Paradise Outfitters, play at the beach, fish, bike on the 24-miles of paved trails, birdwatch, rent a boat or take a hike. Your family will have no problem finding ways to enjoy lake life for the day. 

Before you head home, be sure to stop at Captain’s Corner for dinner. This cute, local restaurant has huge sandwiches and delicious burgers. Next, cross the road to Paradise Ice Cream Parlor. This ice cream shop will transport you back in time with its retro bar stools and decor. Plus, there are cute photo opportunities outside, like a giant Adirondack chair and an ice cream bench!

Between the food and lake outdoor activities, your family will want to make this day trip an annual tradition! No day trips from Kansas City list would be complete without Smithville Lake!

Excelsior Springs, Missouri 

Excelsior Springs, Missouri is half an hour north of Kansas City. This town grew in popularity in the late 1800’s to mid 1900’s due to its natural spring that was said to cure people of illness. Lots of sick people flocked to this town to seek this natural remedy. This boom allowed the town to build beautiful structures such as the Hall of Waters and the romantic Elms Hotel and Spa. Downtown Excelsior Springs has cute shops, a museum, and eateries.

People flocked to Excelsior Spring for healing, and many of them died. The Elms Hotel offers nightly paranormal tours and Excelsior Springs offers more extensive paranormal tours throughout the town. While Excelsior Springs is a great place to visit at any age, I think the paranormal aspects, the ambiance of the Elms, and downtown vibe makes it best suited for couples or a friend’s trip to add to your day trips from Kansas City content.

Olathe, Kansas

Whenever I tell people I think Olathe, Kansas is one of the coolest places in the metro they are usually surprised, but Olathe has a lot to offer.

Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm Historic Site, a living history museum, offers a fascinating glimpse into life in the 19th century, complete with stagecoach rides, blacksmith demonstrations, and hands-on activities for the whole family. Learn about Olathe’s role as a stop on the Santa Fe Trail and gain insight into the daily lives of early pioneers.

For nature enthusiasts, Olathe offers several parks and outdoor spaces perfect for a leisurely afternoon. Visit Ernie Miller Nature Center to explore hiking trails, discover local wildlife, and participate in educational programs and nature-themed events. (Don’t miss the geocache in the Nature Center.) There are multiple trails around the Nature Center of varying distances, making it a great place to hike for any skill level. 

If you’re in the mood for some outdoor recreation, check out Lake Olathe. This scenic lake features hiking trails, and fishing spots, as well as playgrounds and picnic areas. The marina rents out kayaks and paddleboards, has a swim beach, and a giant inflatable playground on the water. 

Lake Olathe has a beach, marina, nature playground, self-service kayak rentals, fishing, boating, and disc golf. The Lake Olathe Splash Pad is one of the coolest water areas in the metro and it is free to the public. There is a waterfall at the top of the hill, with a man-made creek winding through the park. Olathe has two of my favorite waterfalls in the Kansas City Metro: Cedar Lake Falls and Cedar Creek Falls. A trail is currently being built to connect these two falls, but until then they are both still a little tricky to find. You can find instructions on how to find them in my “ 6 Best Waterfalls in and Around Kansas City ” post. 

Before you head home, get dinner at Strips Chicken (delicious local fast food), Vader’s Bar and Grill, or Red Crow Brewing Company. All of these places have fantastic gluten free options as well. Olathe is one of my favorite day trips from Kansas City destinations.

About an hour from Kansas City

Lawrence, kansas.

Lawrence, Kansas is the perfect day trip destination for anyone looking for outdoor adventures, cute shops and eateries, and small-town charm. Begin your trip exploring Massachusetts Street (or “Mass Street”) by grabbing a coffee and checking out outdoor equipment at Great Blue Heron Outdoors. Next, immerse yourself in the local shopping scene.

Head over to Brits and Au Marche for a fantastic array of gifts and European food items that are sure to delight. For families, The Toy Store is a must-visit. With a three-story layout packed with toys, games, and more, it’s a paradise for kids and adults alike. 

Next explore the Watkins Museum, where you can explore fascinating exhibits and kids can play in the adorable playhouse on the third floor. For art enthusiasts, The Art Collective is a hidden gem, showcasing beautiful artworks and offering classes for those looking to unleash their creative side. Wrap up your time on Mass Street by eating at one of the amazing restaurants and exploring South. 

If you like outdoor adventures, be sure to check out Clinton Lake State Park. There are hiking and backpacking trails, a marina, cabins and camping. Or if birding is your thing, head over to Baker Wetlands. Explore the prairies, boardwalk, nature center, and observation spots. Any day trips from Kansas City list wouldn’t be complete without Lawrence, Kansas.

Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge , Missouri

If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path day trips from Kansas City, then head to Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge . It’s a 1.5-hour drive from KC north toward Omaha. From the 10-mile auto loop you can view hundreds of species of birds. It’s also a great spot to view nesting eagles in the winter. There are multiple places where you can get out and look at the birds.

One of the main attractions of Loess Bluffs is its impressive bird population, especially during peak migration seasons in the spring and fall. You can see the sky filled with up to 400,000 snow geese and 100,000 ducks as they make their annual journey. There are birds for viewing year around, not just peak migration seasons. During the winter months, the refuge becomes a prime spot for viewing nesting bald eagles, adding another layer of excitement to your visit.

Across the street from the autoloop, there is a Visitor’s Center and hiking trails. I recommend the 1-mile Loess Bluffs hike. It will take you along these low stooped hills called the Loess Hills. This geological phenomenon is created by silt and clay blowing across plains overtime. There are only two loess hills of this size in the world, Western Iowa and Northwestern Missouri and China. Did you expect these day trips from Kansas City to be so unique?

Watkins C Ranch , Leavenworth, Kansas

Horseback riding and glamping less than an hour from Kansas City! 

This is one of the more unique day trips from Kansas City. Watkins C Ranch is a family-owned ranch outside of Leavenworth, Kansas. A one-hour trail ride takes you through scenic woods, pastures, and even past grazing cows. The ranch is beautiful year-around, but in the fall, Leavenworth comes alive with stunning autumn colors. 

Accommodations at the ranch include charming glamping tents equipped with air mattresses or cots and adorned with cozy decor. While the facilities currently feature porta-potties, there are plans in the works to introduce A-Frame houses with heating and cooling options next year. For those looking to elevate their experience, you can opt for additional meal services and have breakfast and dinner cooked for you during your stay.

About two hours away from Kansas City

Arbor day farm , nebraska city, nebraska.

If you’re looking for a relaxing and unique family fun destination, Arbor Day Farm is the perfect place! The Tree Adventure is a series of treehouses connected by nets. It is such a cool and unique place for kids to play! My kids loved chasing each other, exploring, the view from the look out and the slides. When you go to the Tree Adventure, there are also other fun activities like an outdoor play area where kids can connect with nature, a zip line, and scavenger hunt.

If you’d like to stay for longer than a day, you can stay at the relaxing Arbor Day Lodge. The hotel is beautiful with tall ceilings, wooden pillars, a great swimming pool, and it is adorned with nature quotes, which I loved!

Be sure to stop at Timbers for what feels like an upscale dining experience that is family friendly.  We were completely blown away by how good everything was. My husband got a steak, and I got shrimp risotto (gluten free!). Our kids munched on pizza and burgers. Or if you’re looking for something a little faster and more casual, Porter’s is next to the Tree Adventure and offers BBQ and homemade apple pie. This is one of my kids’ favorite day trips from Kansas City.

Columbia, Missouri

Columbia, Missouri is one of my favorite places to escape for outdoor adventure. Each of these parks could be a day trip, or you could plan to do them all and stay for a weekend. At Rock Bridge Memorial State Park, you’ll discover the iconic rock formations and natural wonders that give the park its name. Wander along scenic trails that lead you through caves, across bridges, and beneath towering limestone bluffs.

Don’t miss the famous Rock Bridge, a natural rock formation that arches over a serene stream, offering a picture-perfect spot for photos or the Devil’s Icebox, a cool (literally and figuratively) cave. In the back of the Devil’s Icebox, you’ll find Connor’s Cave, an interesting place to explore, but bring a flashlight and a helmet. 

Next, head to Pinnacles Youth Park, a hidden gem known for its rugged terrain and stunning views. Challenge yourself with a hike up to the highest point in Boone County, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape. The park’s unique rock formations are unlike anything else I have seen in Missouri, but note that this trail has steep drops, places where you have to scramble across rocks, and isn’t marked well. I don’t recommend this trail for families with kids 10 and under. 

Finger Lakes Missouri State Park is a picturesque park featuring a series of old mines that have been filled in with water to create a series of small lakes. This is the perfect spot for fishing, boating, and swimming. Whether you’re looking to hike, fish, or simply relax and enjoy the scenery, Finger Lakes Missouri State Park offers a peaceful retreat to end your day on a high note. If you’re looking for day trips from Kansas City for outdoor lovers, then Columbia is it!

Indian Cave State Park , Nebraska

Did you know there is a prehistoric cave with petroglyphs just 2 hours from Kansas City and 1.5 hours from Omaha? Indian Cave State Park is a hidden gem nestled along the Missouri River in southeastern Nebraska is one of my favorite day trips from Kansas City. Spanning over 3,000 acres, this picturesque park offers a blend of natural beauty, outdoor recreation, and cultural history. 

The park’s name is derived from the Native American petroglyphs and artifacts that have been discovered within its limestone caves and cliffs, which provide a fascinating glimpse into the region’s ancient past. Unfortunately, the cave has been vandalized, and now you can only view a few of the petroglyphs that are higher up. The path to the cave is short and accessible.

Indian Cave State Park has over 22 miles of hiking and biking trails that wind through dense woodlands, rugged cliffs, and scenic overlooks, offering breathtaking views of the Missouri River valley below. Additionally, the park’s proximity to the river provides opportunities for fishing, boating, and wildlife watching. Visitors can also enjoy picnicking, and even horseback riding within the park’s boundaries. It’s especially beautiful in the fall when the leaves change. 

There are designated backpacking areas within the park where you can hike in and camp. There is also a great camping area. Kansas City, Missouri is a pretty great place. It is conveniently located in a central location to some other really amazing places to visit.

Whether you want to take a day trip or a weekend trip, there are so many great places to choose from.  If you are bored, looking for something to do , or just want to get out for a bit, check out some of these amazing places. You definitely will not be disappointed with these best day trips from Kansas City.

Waterfalls are so beautiful. When watching the water flow so naturally, you might instantly begin to feel relaxed. It is pretty difficult to feel anything other than happiness when enjoying one of nature’s most magical creations. 

Parkville Nature Sanctuary

Where: 8880 Clark Avenue Parkville, MO 64152

When to go: Open from sunrise to sunset. It is best to go in the spring or summer

The Parkville Nature Sanctuary is a wildlife preserve and it is an educational site that is maintained by the city of Parkville and a dedicated group of volunteers. It is a natural outdoor area that is 115 acres and has about three miles of hiking trails.

If you follow Old Kate Trail, which is not even a mile long, you will end up following a wooden boardwalk with views of lush green trees and a winding stream. You will be able to hear the sounds of gushing water, alerting you that you are near the waterfall.

If you go after a rainstorm, this sound will be more powerful than usual. Once you reach the waterfall, you can spend your day enjoying the calm and taking in the breathtaking view of nature. After viewing the waterfall, you can also explore the sanctuary to conclude your trip.

Grand Falls

Where: 5685 Riverside Drive Joplin, MO 64804

When to go: It is best to go in summer if you want to swim. If you do not want to swim, it is recommended to visit Grand Falls in spring, summer, or fall. 

For many decades, Grand Falls has been a popular spot for scenic views. Grand Falls is the largest, natural, continuously flowing waterfall in Missouri. It dips 12 feet down a 163-foot wide ledge before pummeling down and drifting south. The drive to Grand Falls is a little over two hours, but the mesmerizing view of the waterfalls makes the drive worth it.

Above the falls, there is a man-made dam that creates a reservoir. This supplies residents of Joplin with water. It is below this dam where the waterfall sits.

What makes this waterfall really stand out is that you are allowed to swim in Grand Falls. If you plan to swim, it is a good idea to wear water shoes to avoid stepping on any rocks.  If you don’t want to swim, visit the waterfall at sunrise or sunset. The view is absolutely breathtaking.

Besides being beautiful to look at, lakes provide you with many fun things to do . Maybe you want to go for a swim, relax on a raft, go paddle boarding, or maybe you even want to go fishing. Lakes provide you with an opportunity to do many recreational activities.

Blue Springs Lake

When to go: Summer 

Blue Springs Lake is located in Fleming Park. The lake is 720 acres and has lots of space for you to go windsurfing, tubing, waterskiing, powerboating, and more.

It is also a great place to go fishing. Blue Springs Lake contains bluegill, bass, catfish, and carp. There is a bait shop in the marina and a fish cleaning station. In addition to water sports and fishing, there is a beach where you can swim, hiking trails, and land for camping. 

Longview Lake

Where: 11101 Raytown Road Kansas City, MO 64134

Cost: $7 Adults, $5 Seniors, $5 Children 15 and under. Free ages 0-2

When to go: Spring, Summer, Fall Monday-Friday 1 pm-7 pm and Saturday-Sunday 11 am-7 pm

At Longview Lake, there are so many fun activities for you to do. You can do a watersport of your choice, like jet or water skiing, windsurfing, powerboating, and more. Longview Lake has boat rentals and the marina has all the supplies you need to go fishing. 

It offers 930 acres of water entertainment. If you are not interested in boating, water sports or fishing, you can go swimming at their beach.

The Longview Lake park area includes fourteen picnic pavilions for you to host a party, campgrounds to enjoy nature, a golf course, and a horse park for horses to be trained in equestrian groups.

Especially during the colder months, you will need to know of some fun indoor places to visit. 

Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

Where: 4525 Oak Street Kansas City, MO 64111

Cost: Free admission, but there might be a charge for special exhibitions. Parking is $12 in the parking garage.

When to go: Any time of year

Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art has more than 42,000 art objects. Here you can explore so many incredible pieces of art, ranging from ancient times to today. This museum has one of the top three Asian art collections in the world, making it unique.

There are many festivals held here including Passport to India, Chinese New Year, Juneteenth, Deaf Culture Day, Kansas City’s Big Picnic, American Indian Cultural Celebration, and Day of the Dead. All of these festivals offer free admission, music, dance, performances, and fun art activities. 

Prairie Band Casino and Resort

Where: 12305 150th Road Mayetta, KS 66509

Cost: A basic room to stay for one weekend night can cost about $150, but the price can change based on demand and season.  The casino, dining, and other activities are additional charges.

If you are feeling stressed out and need to escape and have some fun, definitely go to Prairie Band Casino and Resort. It only takes about an hour and a half to arrive at your destination.

You can try your luck in their slot machines, table games, or bingo hall, and you can also spend the day and night in one of their luxurious rooms or suites. Prairie Band Casino and Resort offers so many fun activities to enjoy.

You can spend your day golfing, enjoying live entertainment, having a casual dinner, or a fancy one. They even have a pool to swim in and a beautiful lounging area nearby. Not only is this great for a day trip, but it is great for an entire weekend away as well. 

Sallie House

Where: 200 South 10th Street Atchison, KS 66002

Cost: $20 per person for a self-guided tour $125-$150 per person for an overnight stay

The Sallie House is located in Atchison, Kansas. It takes about one hour to arrive at The Sallie House from Kansas City. It is a famous haunted house and is visited by hundreds every year. It is available to visit during the day and for overnight stays if you have enough courage to do so.

There even is a waiver that is required to sign before entering, due to the potential of becoming injured in the house. There have not been any serious injuries since 1993, however. 

The story behind The Sallie House is that it originally was the home of an Atchison doctor. The front of his home was his office space and used for exam rooms, but the rest of the house was where he and his family lived.

One day, a worried mother arrived at his residence with her six-year-old daughter, Sallie. Sallie collapsed from severe pain in her abdomen. The doctor knew she had appendicitis and had to do emergency surgery before her appendix burst. He began cutting Sallie before the anesthesia began to work.

She screamed so loudly and quickly became pale and limp, passing away right in front of him. Her last memories are of this doctor, who she believed was torturing her. It is said she haunts the home to this day.

Walt Disney Museum

When to go: Any time of the year. Closed on Mondays

Since Disney World is so far away, this is the next best thing. It takes about two hours to arrive here. You can spend hours here looking at all of the Disney displays and exhibits. Walt Disney moved to Marceline, Missouri when he was only five years old.

He returned as an adult in 1946 and was reminded of his visit there when he was five years old because of the Santa Fe train depot. The Walt Disney Museum is located in the exact same spot as his early memories of visiting Marceline.

Here you will find many unique Disney artifacts and history, not able to be viewed anywhere else in the world. You can even “adopt a brick” and purchase a brick that will express your love for Walt Disney and support the museum. The museum was established in 2001 and is a popular destination in the Midwest.

Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum

Where: 16701 286th Road Atchison, KS 66002

Cost: $10 Adult  $6 Student Free for Children 5 and under

Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean on a solo trip and the first person ever to fly alone from Hawaii to the United States mainland.

She disappeared during a flight to circumnavigate the globe in July 1937, somewhere over the Pacific Ocean. The wreckage of her plane was never found and she was officially declared lost at sea. Her disappearance is still an unsolved mystery. 

About an hour drive away, the Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum will educate, empower, and inspire all. In 2016, the Atchison Amelia Earhart Foundation got possession of a Lockheed Electra 10-E aircraft, which is the last remaining one in the world.

It is the same model of aircraft that Earhart flew on her final trip. It is named “Muriel” after Amelia Earhart’s sister. The museum is great for adults and children, as it encourages you to achieve whatever you set your mind to.

Boulevard Brewing Company

When to go: Any time of year 

Boulevard Brewing Company is located in Kansas City. If you are a beer lover, you are going to love it here. Boulevard Brewing Company was founded in 1989 and has grown to become the largest specialty brewer in the Midwest.

They have fresh beer with lots of flavors and use the best traditional ingredients while using new brewing techniques. 

They offer a variety of beers, including American wheat beer, Porters, Stouts, Seasonal beers, and India Pale Ales. You can take a tour of the brewery, which is about a one-hour-long walking tour, and try some beer samples in their tasting room. 

Scenic Trips

Whether you want to walk in a field of flowers or walk through the vines of Kansas grown grapes, there is always something to do if you want to enjoy a day trip.

Grinter’s Sunflower Farm

When to go: Late August or early September

Grinter’s Sunflower Farm is a true phenomenon to experience and is one of the best places to visit in Lawrence, Kansas. Sunflowers are such interesting flowers. They begin blooming with their flowers following the sun across the sky. As they grow heavier, they start to droop down, usually facing the East. To witness the flowers looking their absolute best, come on a sunny day a couple of hours after sunrise. It only takes about 30-40 minutes to arrive here. Usually, the sunflowers are at their peak in late August or early September. 

Grinter’s is an amazing location to get photos taken as a family or even just a solo photoshoot. In addition to admiring fields of beautiful sunflowers, you can also stop in their Sunflower General Store and enjoy some delicious baked goods, like their peanut butter filled chocolate chip cookies. 

Somerset Ridge Vineyard and Winery

Where: 29725 Somerset Road Paola, KS 66071

Cost: Varies per wine bottle or glass of wine. There is a food cost if you purchase from the food truck.

When to go: Spring, Summer, Fall

Somerset Ridge Vineyard and Winery is a family-owned winery in the hills of Miami County, Kansas. It is about a 45-minute drive to arrive here. Somerset makes handcrafted quality wines from their Kansas grown grapes, and offers wine tasting and tours to complete the experience. 

They have a great live music schedule, food trucks on weekends, and offer sales online to make it easier for you to order more. Their vineyard was planted in the spring of 1988 and now encompasses over 9,000 grape vines.

They grow twelve different varieties of grapes in their vineyard and all of their vines are pruned and harvested entirely by hand to improve the quality of your wine. This is the perfect spot to go if you want to enjoy a glass of wine, listen to music, and relax .

Local Landmarks

These fun things to do will not disappoint. Visiting some of these local landmarks is a must!

Kansas City Zoo

Cost: General Admission is $15-$18 for all guests. Ages 2 and under are free. Any Jackson or Clay county residents get a discounted rate of $7.50-$9.00 with proof of residence

The Kansas City Zoo is a nonprofit zoo that offers many amazing exhibits and attractions. It is located in Swope Park and is spread across over 200 acres of land. The Kansas City Zoo showcases over 1,000 animals from all over the world and is recognized as one of the top 60 zoos in the United States.

Be sure to check out their African Kangaroo and Chimp Exhibits and the Polar Bear Passage. In addition to many of their awesome exhibits, they have many fun events and activities. Some of the activities they offer include elephant chat, koala chat, hippo chat, and feeding the lorikeets.

Kemper Museum

The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, which is designed by Gunnar Bikerts, is truly an amazing experience.

This museum displays a growing Permanent Collection that shows modern and contemporary works of art featuring many well-known artists, such as Helen Frankenthaler, Georgia O’Keeffe, Richard Mosse, Louise Bourgeois, and more.

There are many special exhibitions, lectures, workshops, installations, and family programs offered that are regularly hosted at the museum.

In addition, the facility includes an upscale dining experience at Cafe Sebastienne, serving lunch Tuesday through Friday and brunch on Saturday and Sunday. Parking and admission are free.

Country Club Plaza

Where: 47th & Broadway, Kansas City, MO 64112

Cost: Free Admission. The cost will vary depending on where you shop or dine.

When to go:10am-7 pm Monday through Saturday 12 pm-6 pm Sunday

Country Club Plaza has more than 150 shopping and dining destinations. It includes many recognizable upscale stores like Kate Spade New York, Tiffany & Co, Warby Parker, and Eileen Fisher. There are also original Kansas City stores like Tivol, Charlie Hustle, and Made in KC Marketplace that give the Country Club Plaza a local touch. 

The plaza features old-world architecture such as red tile roofs, Spanish-style towers, and intricate ironwork. There are over 50 sculpted pieces of art and over 40 fountains, making the Country Club Plaza also known as an outdoor museum. 

Kansas City Market

Where: 20 East 5th Street Suite 201, Kansas City, MO 64106

Cost: Free Admission, Cost varies

When to go: The Farmer’s Market is open April-October Saturdays 7 am-3 pm Sundays 9 am-3 pm and November-March Saturdays and Sundays 9 am-3 pm. Merchant hours vary.

The Kansas City Market offers a variety of merchants and restaurants that offer many unique gifts, home accessories, flowers, specialty foods, and decorations. The region’s largest farmer’s market is held here on Saturdays and Sundays. Here you will find more than 30 delicious restaurants and interesting shops that are open all year long, such as the Arabia Steamboat Museum. 

In addition, the market offers a great concert lineup and many special events. There is a weekly car show series called the “Art of the Machine” that features vintage, custom, and restored vehicles. On the first Friday of every month, you can join in “Be Part of the Art,” which is a local artist showcase and painting class. Be sure to check out their website for more information on the updated events they will be hosting.

We often think of travel as far away from home, overlooking opportunities to explore our own backyards and be tourists in our home towns. These outdoor activities in Kansas City can uncover new adventures while sticking close to home.

Walk on the Wild Side at the Kansas City Zoo

Visit lions and tigers and bears, oh my, at the newly reopened Kansas City Zoo . In order to follow national and local guidelines that encourage physical distancing and reduce high-touch areas, guests must reserve an entry time and follow one-way paths when they visit.

Take Time to Smell the Roses

About 30 minutes east of Kansas City, Powell Gardens recently reopened allowing visitors to see (and smell) what’s in bloom. Explore the 970-acre botanical garden to enjoy outdoor activities near Kansas City. On the Kansas side of the state line, the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens will reopen to members on June 10th. 

Pro Tip:   Whether it’s the zoo or one of Kansas City’s beautiful botanical gardens, be sure to pack plenty of your own water since fountains are considered high-touch and are currently unavailable.

Explore with a Walking Tour or Scavenger Hunt

Whether it’s close to home or far away, I love exploring with an interactive scavenger hunt . They are a fun way to get an overview of the history, culture, and landmarks of our destination, and my kids don’t even notice that they’re learning something! Explore the Crossroads Arts District and learn about the shell-shaped Kauffman Performing Arts Center and bell-topped Webster House or meander along Brush Creek taking in sculptures and keeping an eye out for a massive bronze spider.

History buffs will enjoy one of several historic walking tours available in Independence . The town’s most popular son, Harry S. Truman , loved a good walk, so start with the Truman Walking Tour that includes the Truman family home, the courthouse where he served as presiding judge, and other notable landmarks in the 33rd president’s life. Other walking/driving tours in the area include Civil War and African American historic sites.

You can also create your own outdoor experience that embraces the City of Fountains’s beloved water features , many artistic sculptures , and dedication to peace .

Parks on the Missouri Side of Kansas City

The Kansas City version of New York’s Central Park, Swope Park is not only the city’s largest park, but one of the biggest green spaces in the country. You will also enjoy Loose Park and the Lakeside Nature Center .

Parks in the Northland

Just north of the Missouri River and English Landing Park in Parkville, the Parkville Nature Sanctuary is a wildlife preserve and educational site with acres of woodland creatures and miles of hiking trails to explore. Or wander through the old-growth forest in the Maple Woods Natural Area .

Day Trips from Kansas City

If you want to expand your travels beyond the Kansas City metropolitan area, here are a few recommendations that still have you back in your own bed at bedtime.

Visit a Midwestern College Town

They’re typically much quieter and less crowded in June and July when the college kids are home, and this year the local businesses can really use your support since most college students returned home two to three months early.

Staying in the Kansas City states of Kansas and Missouri, there are several day trips from Kansas City that feature college towns . Heading west of the metro area, visit Lawrence, home of the University of Kansas, or travel a bit farther to Manhattan to explore Kansas State University . On the Missouri side, the University of Missouri in Columbia is about two hours east of Kansas City.

Pro Tip:  If you are headed west to Lawrence or Manhattan, make a pit stop at Cause Coffee . This 100% volunteer-run coffee house in De Soto is dedicated to making a difference in the local and global community.

Atchison, Kansas

If you’ve decided to ground your air travel this summer, you can still soar high with record-breaking aviator Amelia Earhart . Visit her birthplace and childhood home overlooking the Missouri River in Atchison, about an hour north of Kansas City. From the International Forest of Friendship to riverfront parks, you’ll find plenty of places to get outdoors and further explore her hometown.

St. joseph, missouri.

Perhaps best known for hosting our beloved Kansas City Chiefs during training camp each year, St. Joseph is about an hour due north of Kansas City. Spend a day touring the town that was the starting point of the Pony Express, the birthplace of hip hop star Eminem , and the death place of American outlaw Jesse James. 

Weston, Missouri

Also north of Kansas City, Weston is known for its wineries and distilleries . If you didn’t spend enough time day-drinking during quarantine, you can sip wine at the Pirtle Winery tasting room or the Weston Wine Company . If spirits are more your style, stop by the Holladay Distillery . And because nothing pairs with wine quite like cheese, wrap up your day in Weston at Green Dirt Farm .

Staying Safe on the Road After a Pandemic

Whether you choose to be a tourist in your hometown, take a day trip from Kansas City, or travel farther from the City of Fountains, consider these safety precautions.

Know Before You Go

Before you hit the road, be sure to check local advisories and contact attractions, parks, restaurants, and other stops on your itinerary. Travel restrictions, opening dates, and other policies in effect can vary by county, state, and city. Additionally, private businesses may have additional safeguards in place to protect their workers and customers.

Ask About Cleaning Practices

For the past two months, we’ve been regularly washing our hands and sanitizing heavily trafficked areas to keep the coronavirus at bay. Before you hit the road, ask your accommodations about their cleaning practices.

If you plan to rent an RV, Outdoorsy is like Vrbo for recreational vehicles. Their website details the requirements RV and camper owners must follow between rentals. And, like many hotels, Hilton has a regularly updated page on their website that outlines the added steps they’re taking to keep guests safe.

Continue to be Vigilant

As you emerge from quarantine, continue to be vigilant. Be sure you have adequate masks on hand for each person in your party for the duration of your trip. Wash or sanitize your hands regularly, especially after you’ve opened doors, pushed elevator buttons, or handled money or credit cards. 

Get plenty of rest, eat healthy foods, and take your vitamins. When your body is well rested and running on premium fuel, it’s harder to be sidelined than when you’re worn down. Several recent articles have suggested a link between healthy levels of Vitamin D and a lower risk of COVID-19, so soak up some sun, swallow a supplement , and chow down on foods full of Vitamin D such as fatty fish (like tuna and salmon), dairy products (like milk, yogurt, and cheese), and egg yolks.

And, if you don’t feel well — especially if you are running a fever or have other coronavirus symptoms — stay at home!

This is quite an exhaustive list. Agree that, when we can start traveling, we need to start easy and of course start local. This is an excellent compilation for Kansas City. I like how you have also included simple activities that still add to beautiful experiences.

1. January - Ice Skating at Chicken N Pickle

Whether it's January already or nearing the end, it's probably plenty cold outside for ice skating or a pickup game of hockey. Chicken N Pickle is always a blast, but the ice skating it offers during the winter is EXTRA awesome. This is one of the best day trips from Kansas City!

2. February - Prehistoric Kansas Road Trip

As long as the ice doesn't hold you back, traveling across the state can bring great wonder to you, especially when you're learning about the first creatures that roamed the area Kansas was back when a sea covered most of our state. We're pretty sure the natural history of Kansas doesn't get more fun and fascinating than this! This is one of the most fascinating "day trips for kids near me."

3. March - Kansas's Largest Antique Mall

Antique malls are always a great way to pass the time and the largest one in Kansas, the Paramount Antique Mall , is the best at doing just that. It also has two other locations, just in case you're the quickest antique browser in the West.

4. April - A Thrifting Trip To Remember

If hanging around for a day in a thrift shop isn't your ideal traveling plan, you'll want to check out this road trip - and the one before it - for all the finds you'll need this spring. That's what spring cleaning is for, right? Do this awesome thrift store road trip and see what treasures you can find.

5. May - A Trip To Monument Rocks

Western Kansas doesn't really have a lot of forested areas or large rolling hills, but what we do have is Niobrara chalk badlands in the form of Monument Rocks . They're a lot taller than they look!

We love our Flint Hills and endless skies, but the Konza Prairie area just has a little extra something to it. It is easily Kansas at its most beautiful, and we are thrilled that it's our own.

7. July - History museums across Kansas

Our history is important to us, and these beautiful museums are a great place to travel to when you're feeling like you want to connect to your state. Do this Kansas history road trip and learn everything there is to know about the Sunflower State.

8. August - The Shorebird Migration

Almost half of all of America's migrating shorebirds come through Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira NWR so we get a little excited when they start to fill the skies around our wetlands. Peak season starts in August, and the annual shorebird migration in Kansas is something you won't forget seeing.

9. September - Fall foliage at Fall River

Fall River , much like its name, is a state park you really should see when the leaves start to turn. Red, yellow, and orange trees reflected in the water on a cool fall day are a beautiful sight worth seeing.

10. October - Above and Below Kansas

Adventure at the Cosmosphere will take you through the stars and into the world of rocket science, but you can also head deep below ground into the local salt mine to see the opposite of the stars above.

11. November - BBQ Heaven Road Trip

Kansas is big into barbecue, and we think these spots are still savory safe houses for some of the best meats around the state. Why not take a trip to try them all? This Budget-Friendly Day Trip Destination In Kansas The Entire Family Will Enjoy

I think we'd all love to splurge on a four-figure vacation every now and again, but times are tough and that's not always possible. If you're looking to save a buck, a day trip might be a great option for you. Not having to deal with the cost of overnight lodging is a huge money saver, and if you live in the Sunflower State, there are so many great places within easy driving distance! One of our favorite budget day trips in Kansas is the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, KS. This is not only one of the best museums in Kansas - it's one of the top space museums in the whole country. Best of all, admission is under $30 per person - the exact price depends on what add-ons you choose. During the summer, there are often deals where kids can get in for free or at a deeply discounted rate, saving families even more money. Check this place out:

Cosmosphere was opened in 1962 and is one of the world's largest space museums. It's home to an amazing 13,000 spaceflight artifacts.

You'll find all kinds of treasures here, with both Russian and American artifacts on display dating all the way back to the 1940s.

There are five venues here, including interactive areas for kids of all ages and a 4K theater.

This is truly one of the best museums in Kansas, and the exhibits do a great job of making science accessible to even young children.

Prairiefire in Overland Park, Kansas, offers a unique day trip experience with a mix of entertainment, dining, and shopping.

Looking for a day trip in Kansas ? We have plenty of attractions here. Beautiful state parks, wonderful historic sites, charming small towns in Kansas…the Sunflower State really has it all! One spot that we’re especially fond of is Prairiefire. This shopping center is about half an hour away from Kansas City, and we know it sounds weird to call a shopping center a “day trip.” But trust us, this isn’t like your typical shopping center! In fact, it’s one of our favorite things to do in Overland Park.

Prairiefire is a 60-acre mixed-use development in Overland Park that's like a miniature town all on its own.

The area's most popular attraction is the Museum at Prairiefire, one of the best natural history museums in Kansas.

This is a great family-friendly destination with 42,000 square feet of educational opportunities. There are permanent and rotating exhibits, virtual reality experiences, and more.

Pinstripes is a neat entertainment venue at Prairiefire. Here, you'll find a bocce court, an indoor bowling area, an outdoor patio, and delicious food.

There are plenty of other great spots to get food at Prairiefire, though. We love Rock and Brews, a chain co-owned by Gene Simmons, the lead singer of KISS. It's a great place to grab some delicious food and a beer.

Chicken 'N Pickle is great fun. Here, you can stuff yourself with wood-fired chicken while playing pickleball and other lawn games like Connect Four and cornhole.

Prairiefire truly has everything! You can even catch a movie at the AMC Dine-In Theatre on site.

That's not even touching on all the great shops that are here. Prairiefire is a fantastic day trip in Kansas that provides ample opportunities for entertainment, dining, and more!
