After an explosive and contentious Netflix special in 2021, Dave Chappelle is hitting the road again.

Chappelle has been a controversial figure following his 2021 Netflix special “The Closer,” in which he made jokes about transgender people, leading to  company walkouts  and protests last October. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos originally defended Chappelle, saying in statement that the comedian is “one of the most popular stand-ups today” and “as with our other talent, we work hard to support their creative freedom — even though this means there will always be content on Netflix some people believe is harmful.” Sarandos ultimately said he “screwed up” in his reaction to the Chappelle backlash.

The comedian made headlines again in 2022 when he was attacked on stage  while performing a comedy set during the Netflix Is a Joke festival in Los Angeles.

Dave was an electrifying and touching performance. Speaking about deep issues such as race, culture and depression as well as his past as an act and where he’s got to now. He had the crowds full attention throughout the show and the feeling of unity was immense. He was a top class act and is definitely worth seeing.

'This is a celebration' said Dave, and boy was it a celebration. He brought out all of finest rappers, played footie and enjoyed every moment, and so did we. Absolutely amazing, probably the best show I've been to.

ish333’s profile image

Great show, Dave preformed 13 songs I total but the highlight of the night was Thiago Silva when he brought AJ Tracey on stage. The crowd was amazing, singing along on all songs and the mosh pits were crazy.

kikirowy’s profile image

It was quite a short show but it was unreal. He played a variety from his old stuff and new stuff but mainly it was newer stuff. Loved every second of it and can’t wait till he’s back again!!

Dave is just a guy that raps and sings, he said so himself.

And now I'm writing extra words because the review was too short. Apparently still too short so here I go typing away.

Dave Chappelle walks onstage at New York City's Madison Square Garden.

Dave Chappelle topped himself.

After a star-studded first night at Madison Square Garden, the controversial comic brought in a number of huge comics and musical guests to his second show at MSG as part of his ‘It’s a Celebration B!%?#&$! Tour’ on Wednesday, Aug. 23.

Before the “Chappelle’s Show” star took the stage, Chris Rock, Jon Stewart , Jeff Ross , Luenell and Earthquake got the show rolling.

But that’s not all.

In addition to a headlining set from the self-proclaimed “GOAT,” The Roots , Nas , De La Soul and Ludacris all performed as well.

At midnight, Chappelle turned 50 and many of the artists listed above started a countdown to wish him a happy birthday.

Yet, there’s still more.

On Friday, Aug. 25 and Saturday, Aug. 26 , Chappelle will return to the Garden for two more shows before taking off on the rest of his nationwide tour.

Want to see him — and presumably a handful of jaw-dropping special guests — live?

We’ve got everything you need to know and more below.

After his MSG stay, the “Chappelle’s Show” icon will perform all over North America.

Here’s where he’s headed next:

Dave Chappelle controversy

Over the past few years, Chappelle made waves for his insensitive material about the transgender community in his Netflix specials “Sticks and Stones” and “The Closer.”

Rather than apologize for his remarks, he doubled down and defended his point of view.

Many big names have spoken out about his baseless attacks.

“Dave Chappelle making jokes about trans people directly leads to violence, whether it’s verbal or otherwise, against trans people,” said US soccer star Megan Rapinoe in an interview with  Time Magazine .

Fellow comic Wanda Sykes shared with  Variety  that Chappelle’s material was “so hurtful and damaging to the trans community.”

That didn’t stop Chappelle from going after other marginalized groups.

In November 2022, Chappelle was asked to host NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.” On the program, he made several anti-Semitic jokes in his 20-minute monologue.

At the time of publication, Chappelle has not issued a sincere apology to either community.

Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle set to perform third co-headlining tour following recent controversies

Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle are giving fans an encore, with the comedians heading out on the road together for another joint headlining tour.

The tour, which kicks off Jan. 20 in Oklahoma City , will see Rock and Chappelle play five dates in cities across Missouri, Tennessee, Alabama and South Carolina. Tickets for the tour go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday at ticketmaster.com .

The two previously headlined a tour together in December 2022 , performing in San Diego, San Francisco and Phoenix. They also toured the U.K. in September of that same year.

Rock and Chappelle have become known for their comic routines that cannily expose, diagnose and lampoon political, racial and cultural hypocrisy and identity, building on the foundation of such predecessors as Richard Pryor and George Carlin .

Man who attacked Dave Chappelle at Netflix festival sentenced to 270 days in jail

In 2022, however, both men were in the headlines in association with various controversies.

Last March, Rock was the victim of the slap heard 'round world , when actor Will Smith walked onstage during the Academy Awards and smacked the comedian across the face in response to a joke Rock made about Smith's wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith .

Meanwhile, Chappelle placed himself within a media firestorm, attracting criticism for jokes on "Saturday Night Live" and on other stages that some people condemned as anti-Semitic and transphobic .

These incidents explain why a press release announcing the show contains unusually strong wording about the prohibition of cellphones and the ownership "rights." While concertgoers "maintain possession of their phones throughout the night," all phones and smart watches are "secured in Yondr pouches that will be unlocked at the end of the show."

"No cellphones, cameras or recording devices will be allowed at this show," states the press release, from Live Nation Entertainment. "Anyone caught with a cellphone in the venue will be immediately ejected."

On ownership rights, the release states that "any jokes and sketches delivered during (the) performance...may not be copied, translated, transmitted, displayed, distributed, or reproduced verbatim" without express prior consent from Pilot Boy Productions, a film and TV production company founded by Chappelle.

The release continues: "Any Use of the Materials without the express prior written consent of Pilot Boy Productions, Inc. is strictly prohibited and shall be subject to all available legal remedies, whether in equity or at law at the cost of anyone who violates this prohibition."

Every Reference in Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” Video

K Dot's long-awaited video for "Not Like Us" features countless references to his beef with Drake.

dave on tour 2023

View this video on YouTube

Kendrick Lamar's long-awaited video for "Not Like Us" features multiple references to some of the smaller moments from his beef with Drake , which makes for an especially rewarding watch for anyone who followed every step of the saga.

The "Not Like Us" video, directed by Kendrick and his frequent collaborator Dave Free, opens with a shot of the Los Angeles County Superior Court in the rapper's hometown, Compton. Considering the allegations that Kendrick throws at Drizzy's way in "Not Like Us," it's an appropriate way to kick off the celebratory music video.

But one of the first major direct references to the beef appears to be a callback to Drake's music video for his K Dot diss, "Family Matters." Featuring a similarly stark, black-and-white aesthetic, the shot at the 1:08 point of the video shows a man resembling Drake's look from the cover of Dark Lane Demo Tapes approaching the rapper from behind. As soon as he gets close to Kendrick, who is standing perfectly still next to a man dancing in a hat that proudly reads "Compton," he's pulled away.

Basically, Kendrick thinks he's untouchable, at least when it comes to Drake's attempts to diss him.

Not only did they recreate the second part of the Family Matters video in this shot, he had Dark Lane Demo Drake sneak behind him and get blasted away 😂😂 Cinematography dissing >>> pic.twitter.com/WoFxsy5eKD — Big Boss 🇵🇸 (@LordBalvin) July 4, 2024

Next comes another direct reference to one of Drake's diss tracks: "Push Ups." The song was the Canadian rapper's first track to come for Kendrick Lamar head-on after the release of "Like That," the instigating song that officially boiled the tension between the two over.

K Dot does push-ups in a prison yard-style workout, both a nod to the title of "Push Ups" and the chorus of the track: "Better drop and give me fifty / Drop and give me fifty, drop and give me fifty." As highlighted by some eagle-eyed fans, there's also what appears to be a painting or a picture turned around to face the wall, which could be a reference to another line from "Push Ups:" "I know my picture on the wall when y'all cook up."

Picture off the wall & turned around while Kendrick is doing Push Ups with studio speakers around him. 🤌🏽♟️ #NotLikeUs pic.twitter.com/IotWAmns29 — Kari (@SneakerPhetish) July 5, 2024

Not so much an easter egg, but the video also features a moment when Kendrick Lamar hits an owl piñata, a clear mockery of the owl imagery associated with Drake's OVO Sound imprint. There's even an added disclaimer: "No OVHOES were harmed during the making of this video."

Beating up an OVO owl with a Disclaimer “NO OVHOES WERE HARMED DURING THE MAKING OF THIS VIDEO”...Kendrick Lamar is unhinged and the best way #NotLikeUs pic.twitter.com/UFW3eUuSJC — C.Davis (@CDavistheAuthor) July 4, 2024

The video is filled with cameos from various West Coast figures, including most of Black Hippy and producer Mustard, but one of the most cutting is the appearance of TDE CEO Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith. Throughout Drake's disses, particularly "Push Ups" and "Family Matters," he accused TDE of exploiting Kendrick Lamar prior to his exit from the label. However, the rapper hugs the TDE CEO in the clip, making it clear there's no bad blood between them.

Another major cameo is co-director Dave Free, who Drake suggested was the biological father of one of Kendrick's children on "Family Matters." The pair are seen in front of several shipping containers, which could also suggest that Kendrick is accusing Drake of human trafficking, something OVO's Baka Not Nice was arrested for in 2014.

Then there's the appearance of Kendrick's fiancée Whitney Alford and their two children. Drake accused the Compton rapper of assaulting his fiancée on the two diss songs "Family Matters" and "The Heart Part 6." K Dot hasn't addressed the allegations directly, but the appearance of Alford is as good as any denial could be.

The music video once again revisits the owl imagery in its closing moments, which show Kendrick Lamar putting an owl in a cage.

Drake has yet to respond to the music video, but there's plenty to unpack.

Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour Is Heading to Theaters

The superstar’s concert will hit the big screen this December

preview for Beyoncé’s Best Renaissance World Tour Looks

Multiple outlets including Variety and Deadline have reported that singer’s fashion-filled , economy-boosting tour is reportedly in final talks to head to release through AMC, following the movie theater chain’s screenings of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour later this month. Now, Beyoncé has confirmed the news herself. The superstar dropped the official trailer for the film following the completion of the final Renaissance tour stop in Kansas City, Missouri, on Sunday evening. The clip features behind-the-scenes clips of the singer preparing for the shows alongside her children, and shots of the crowds for what will easily go down in history as one of the most monumental concert tours of all time.

Per Variety , the pop star has spent years developing the film, which will include “elements of her top-grossing 2023 live shows, parts of the long-gestating visual album Renaissance and a documentary-style account of making the record and building out the tour (Blue Ivy Carter cameos surely to come).”

The “Break My Soul” singer reportedly recorded the two September tour stops in her hometown of Houston for the film, per Deadline .

The Renaissance World Tour is one of the superstar’s highest-grossing concert tours and has already brought in over half a billion dollars to date. Beyoncé has previously released several films documenting the behind-the-scenes processes of her intricate live performances. Her most recent film release was 2019’s Homecoming , which followed the rehearsals leading up to her headlining set at Coachella 2018.
