4-night Baja cruise with Catalina Island on Disney Wonder

Disney Wonder is one of Disney Cruise Line 's oldest and smallest ships, carrying only 2,700 passengers. However, it's packed with Disney adventures, including a musical stage production of "Frozen," character meet-ups and the most family-friendly cabins at sea. Wonder sails to Mexico from San Diego during the fall and winter.

Not every four-night cruise on Wonder includes Catalina Island, but if you can snag one that does, it's a huge bonus of family fun. Activities in the port of Avalon on Catalina include an amazing zip-line course of five lines. 6- and 7-night Mexico cruises plus Roatan on Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas

Royal Caribbean' s Harmony of the Seas is one of the largest vessels ever to sail from Galveston, and there's a shiny new terminal designed to handle the behemoth.

Part of the line's Oasis Class , which includes the world's largest cruise ships, Harmony of the Seas carries 5,479 passengers at double occupancy. What types of Mexico cruises are there?

Drawing vacationers looking to experience Mexico’s beachy resort areas, festive culture, and Mayan ruins, the majority of these trips depart from Miami and Gulf Coast ports such as Tampa, New Orleans, and Galveston, Texas, and focus on the Caribbean side of Mexico. They’ll typically include a call at Cozumel–the busiest cruise port outside of Florida–and sometimes Costa Maya or Progreso on the Yucatan Peninsula. Dubbed “Western Caribbean” sailings and usually three to seven nights in length, they often also include stops at one or more non-Mexican ports such as Roatan, Honduras, or Ocho Rios, Jamaica .

Another major category of Mexico cruises are the week-long “Mexican Riviera” trips out of California ports such as San Diego and Long Beach that head down the western coast of Mexico. Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, and Mazatlan are the typical destinations here. There also are shorter “Baja Mexico” cruises out of West Coast ports that only go as far as Ensenada.

All the above options are available year-round. A final choice for a Mexico cruise only available during the winter is an adventure-focused, small-ship sailing along the rugged east coast of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. A handful of adventure cruise companies offer these.

Almost any Mexico itinerary is bound to satisfy beach lovers, as they nearly all include at least a stop or two at a port near a gorgeous stretch of sand. Those more interested in the country’s rich history should opt for a sailing that includes Costa Maya or Progreso, offering access to spectacular Mayan ruins. You’ll often find more active outdoor pursuits such as hiking through sand dunes and snorkeling with sea lions on one of the Baja Peninsula sailings, which also are the trips to do if you’re a fan of whale-watching.

In addition to operating the newest, most-stylish big ship sailing to Mexico, the Celebrity Edge , Celebrity Cruises now is offering culinary-themed “Moveable Feast” sailings to the destination that feature star chefs, cooking demonstrations, private cooking classes, and chef-hosted shore excursions.

Created in partnership with Fine Cooking magazine and its Emmy Award–winning PBS show Moveable Feast with Fine Cooking , the trips include a seven-night Western Caribbean voyage in December on the newly unveiled, 2,918-passenger Edge with James Beard Foundation Award–winning New York chef Marcus Samuelsson and Top Chef judge and cookbook author Gail Simmons.

Dishes they will highlight during cooking demonstrations and in restaurants have yet to be set, but the Ethiopian-born, Swedish-raised Samuelsson is known for marrying a variety of cuisines in his cooking. Whether you’re looking for a brief 2-day introduction to the world of cruising or you wish to delve into exciting adventures in the Sea of Cortez, these Mexico cruise options hold plenty of seafaring fun. Sampler Cruise: The 2- to 4-Day Option  

Are you intrigued by cruise travel but don’t know exactly where to begin? Convenient 2- to 4-day sampler cruises to Mexico might be just the answer, especially if you live in or near California. From Los Angeles, Carnival Cruise Lines regularly deploys its “fun ships” -- so called by the line for their playful nature -- on shorter durations to the Baja California port of Ensenada, Mexico, with or without an additional stop at Catalina Island. Choose from the 2,056-passenger sister ships -- Carnival Imagination or Carnival Inspiration -- or the larger 2,124-person Carnival Miracle.

Mexican Riviera Round-Trips: 6 Days or More  

The most common Mexico itinerary is to the Mexican Riviera, visiting the west coast of the country, with Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta being the most frequented ports on weeklong cruises. Other ports on the Pacific Ocean side include Acapulco, Ensenada, Huatulco, Manzanillo, Puerto Chiapas and Zihuatanejo – well-known as the town longed for in the film The Shawshank Redemption. If you’ve already experienced a cruise as a quick weekend getaway and are ready for more, these full-circle trips of 6 days or longer are great for a complete vacation. Round-trips to the Mexican Riviera commence from the California homeports of San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego, and they are operated primarily by Carnival Cruise Lines , Holland America Line , Norwegian Cruise Line and Princess Cruises .

Mexico’s East Coast via Western Caribbean  

While not often dedicated exclusively to Mexico, plenty of western Caribbean sailings highlight the Mayan Riviera along Mexico’s east coast. The Mexican ports of Progresso, Costa Maya and Cozumel are all access points to the ancient Mayan civilization and its famous historical sites such as Chichen Itza, Tulum and San Gervasio. At one time or another, all the mainstream cruise lines visit Mexico’s east coast from various departure ports in Florida, including Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, Port Canaveral and Tampa. Servicing additional states off the Gulf of Mexico, Norwegian Cruise Line also leaves from Louisiana; Disney Cruise Line and Princess Cruises also leave from Texas; and Carnival Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean International also leave from both Louisiana and Texas.

Special Sailings to the Sea of Cortez  

Also alluring are a handful of unique sailings to the Sea of Cortez onboard Holland America Line and Azamara Club Cruises (the upscale boutique line and corporate cousin to Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises), and now is the time to book them with just a singular 12-day cruise available per line. Holland America ’s Statendam will set sail for the region in December 2013 round-trip from San Diego, and the Azamara Quest will follow in January 2014 round-trip from Los Angeles. A highlight of these voyages will be access to the Copper Canyon, Mexico’s equivalent to the Grand Canyon, as well as overnight stays. The Statendam will stop in Puerto Vallarta for 2 days, and the Azamara Quest will do the same in Loreto. Late-evening stays are similarly a signature of Azamara, and the Quest will stay until 11 p.m. in both Topolobampo and Cabo San Lucas, while Holland America will stay just as late in Topolobampo. Additional featured ports flanking the Sea of Cortez will be La Paz and Guaymas.   Passing Through: Luxury Lines and Repositioning  

Luxury cruise lines like Crystal Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn Cruise Line and Silversea Cruises make it to Mexico infrequently, while other mainstream lines such as Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Royal Caribbean International only get to Mexico’s west coast during repositioning -- between sailing regions -- or Panama Canal cruises. Best Mexico Cruise Deals

Like the Caribbean, Mexico can be an affordable cruise destination – if you cruise at the right time and on the right line. Popular cruise ports in Mexico include Cozumel, Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta. Because Carnival Cruise Line offers an abundance of Mexico itineraries, its rates tend to be some of the cheapest. However, you can also find deals on lines like Norwegian Cruise Line and Princess Cruises. Popular shore excursions on Mexico cruises include tours of ancient Mayan ruins, swimming in cenotes, parasailing, beach outings and more.

As far as timing goes, you can find some of the best Mexico cruise deals between May and August, with rates starting as low as $35 per person, per night for an inside cabin. You may also find some bargains between late summer and fall, but temperatures will be at their hottest during this time. Some popular cruise destinations in the Yucatan Peninsula and Gulf Coast may also be affected by hurricane season. Be sure to weigh the pros and cons if you are booking a trip for this time – especially between July or August and October, when storms are the most common in this region.

Cancún, Cabo or Puerto Vallarta: Which Mexico resort is best for you?

A comparison of the country’s most popular beach towns.

No other country welcomes more American tourists than Mexico . Vacationers go for sun-soaked beaches, warmer temperatures and low costs that feel far away from the cold reality of everyday life. More than 12 million American tourists took a flight into Mexico last year, according to statistics from the country’s secretary of tourism.

The vast majority head for one of three beach zones: Cancún, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta, which represented three of the top four airports for international tourist arrivals last year, including Mexico City.

While you can’t go wrong with any of these three resort areas — they’re famous for a reason — there are noticeable nuances that can tip the scales when you’re picking one over the others. Over the past 10 years, I’ve visited all three on several occasions: Cancún half a dozen times, Vallarta twice, and, most recently Los Cabos. In terms of visitor appeal and natural beauty, they rival some of the world’s most remarkable and serene beaches.

We asked the travel platform Hopper to pull average spring break prices — covering March, April and May — to show how the costs break down. Here’s the case for each destination, depending on your budget and travel style.

Cancún: All-inclusives, nightclubs, beautiful beaches

Located on the edge of the Caribbean Sea, Cancún is the most popular of the three Mexican getaways by a sizable margin. It is also the most “touristy” in terms of spoken English, Americanized cuisine and the volume of resorts and daily flights from North America and Europe.

In my experience, it’s been the most expensive of the resort hubs in this comparison, although Hopper’s data shows it has the lowest average “good deal” airfare this spring ($330), and the average nightly hotel rate is higher in Los Cabos. In Cancún, you’ll get a lot in return for your money: tranquil, teal and warm waters and white sandy beaches (when the seaweed isn’t bad). There is also the most nightlife and the best snorkeling and scuba diving. The Cancún area and surrounding Mayan Riviera are full of all-inclusive resorts with options ranging from adults-only to kid-friendly.

Cancún is only a couple hours drive ( and now train ) from world-class Mayan ruins such as Chichen Itza and Tulum. There’s also swimmable, flooded sinkholes called cenotes that are a wonder on their own.

Average nightly hotel rate: $251

Best for: Clubgoers, families, adventure seekers, history buffs

Los Cabos: Desert romance, deep-sea fishing, wedding backdrops

The area we call “Cabo” is actually two beach towns in one, hence its other nickname, “Los Cabos.”

Separated by 20 miles and on opposite sides of the tip of Baja California, San Jose del Cabo (where the airport is) is the older town located on the Gulf of California. Just around the corner lies Cabo San Lucas, the newer and fast-growing town at the confluence of the Pacific and the gulf.

To get an idea of Cabo’s romantic scenery, imagine if Arizona, Southern California and the Mediterranean had a baby. Dramatic deserts, rugged coastline, deep blue ocean and a famous sea arch (a.k.a. “El Arco”) are flanked by endemic elephant trees, desert sand , and gorgeous cactuses.

As the second-most popular beach retreat on this list, Cabo has an abundance of wildlife and biggest beaches, as well as high-end resorts, spas, golf courses and restaurants.

Travel adviser Sebastian Garrido recommends deep-sea fishing — or just enjoying the products of Pacific waters. Cabo blends coastal Mexican cuisine with resort fare, catering to both locals and tourists alike.

“You can find some of the best seafood around the world down here,” he said.

In my experience, swimming on the Pacific is often forbidden by lifeguards, given the dangerous undertow. But the gulf side is tranquil and family friendly.

A popular place for weddings, Cabo is probably the most dreamy landscape of the three destinations.

Best for: Pacific views, sport fishing, weddings, culture that caters to locals and tourists, sunsets and scenery.

Puerto Vallarta: Fewer Americans, sleepy beaches, birria tacos

Nestled down the Pacific coast in Jalisco state, Puerto Vallarta is a classic, cozy beach town. It is surrounded by mountains and tropical jungles and often caters more to Mexican tourists than Americans.

In terms of culture, cuisine, number of restaurants, boardwalk shopping, cobblestone streets, and affordability, Vallarta is the most “Mexican” of the bunch, which is endearing.

Vallarta’s narrower beaches are admittedly more confined than Cancun’s or Cabo’s . But they’re still beautiful. Among the Pacific views, you can spot humpback whale breaches early in the year. While there are dozens of large luxury resorts and all-inclusives here, you’ll also find a lot of small hotels that are locally owned and operated .

Jalisco is the home of birria , a complex braise of goat, lamb or beef served with a rich, spicy broth. I’ve also had chilaquiles and tacos al pastor here that trumped the versions I tried in Cancún and Cabo.

“Puerto Vallarta offers an authentic Mexican experience as it was not created as a tourism destination,” says Gustavo Rivas-Solis, a travel publicist who represents the area. “It grew into one as people took notice and fell in love with Bay of Banderas and its surroundings.”

Best for: Ocean views, sunbathing, fewer tourists, colonial architecture, jungle hikes, street shopping
