Belgium SIM Cards: Everything You Need To Know

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Dec 3, 2023 | Belgium , Europe , SIM Cards , Travel Tips

Visiting Belgium soon? Make sure to know what to expect when it comes to purchasing a Belgium SIM card .

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Belgium in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

That said, if you’re traveling to other countries in Europe, you should be able to use the same SIM card because most SIM card providers also offer coverage in other European countries.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Belgium. If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call a Uber, or translate Dutch, or French – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Belgium.

Note that your mobile phone provider may already offer Belgian coverage if you’re European. If that’s the case, you won’t need a SIM card for your adventures in Belgium.

Brussels, Belgium

Best SIM Cards In Belgium

If you’re traveling in Belgium, we recommend using a SIM card from Proximus, Orange, Base, or Airalo. (I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!)

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Europe , you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other European countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Belgium

You can either buy a Europe prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase a European prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Proximus, Orange, and Base.

Bruges, Belgium

Proximus SIM Cards

Proximus offers three different types of plans:

  • Pay&go + prepaid card: Get a SIM card, EUR 10 credit, and 3 GB data for EUR 5 (online offer)
  • Reload 10: 500 MB data for EUR 10
  • Reload 15: 3 GB data for EUR 15
  • Reload 25: 5 GB data for EUR 25

As a visitor, the first option is probably the best, if you can purchase your SIM online.

Orange SIM Cards

Orange Belgium has a prepaid SIM card called a ‘Tempo Card’ available with the following options:

  • 1 GB data, 500 texts, 31 days for EUR 10
  • 5 GB data, 4000 texts, 31 days for EUR 15
  • 8 GB data, 31 days for EUR 15
  • 7 GB data, 5000 texts, 31 days for EUR 20

As you can see, it’s slightly cheaper than Proximus.

Base SIM Cards

Base offers several different prepaid options for customers, including the following:

  • 4 GB data for EUR 15
  • 8 GB data for EUR 25

Overall, we think Proximus is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person. That said, any would do if you can’t find their store!

How To Buy A Belgium Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, the Orange Holiday Europe Prepaid SIM Card works in more than 30 countries and gives you 20BG of data for 14 days. Belgium is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and make sure the countries you plan on visiting are listed.

Browse your options on Amazon

Another option is to purchase a prepaid European SIM card on SimOptions .

They currently offer various data plans in Belgium.

Browse your options on SimOptions

Finally, the last option is to buy an eSIM card for Europe.

How To Buy An eSIM Card For Belgium

eSIM is a new concept allowing you to have a virtual SIM card inside your phone. If your mobile phone supports eSIM cards – it’s definitely one of the best options to get data in Belgium.

Curious? Learn more about eSIM for travelers on esimroamers.com .

I started using eSIM as soon as my mobile phone supported it. And I first tried it when visiting my family in Canada. To buy eSIMs, I usually use Airalo .

Airalo Belgium

If you want to buy an eSIM for Belgium, you could purchase one on Airalo . This website offers many eSIM cards worldwide and special plans for Europe and Belgium. I’ve been using Airalo in Europe for several months, and it works fine.

Here are the options available :

  • Belganet: 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $4.50
  • Belganet: 2 GB, valid for 15 days for $7
  • Belganet: 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $9
  • Belganet: 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $12.50
  • Belganet: 10 GB, valid for 30 days for $20
  • Belganet: 20 GB, valid for 30 days for $30

Airalo esim Belgium

Here’s an overview of the options available in Europe :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $5
  • 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $13
  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $20
  • 10 GB, valid for 30 days for $37
  • 50 GB, valid for 90 days for $100
  • 100 GB, valid for 180 days for $185

The options mentioned above are part of Eurolink and offer coverage in 39 countries, including Belgium.

Alternatively, if you’re traveling in other countries that are not mentioned on the list, you can try Discover Global, which offers coverage in 87 countries, including Belgium.

Here’s an overview of the options available on Discover Global :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $9
  • 3 GB, valid for 15 days for $24
  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $35
  • 10 GB, valid for 60 days for $59
  • 20 GB, valid for 180 days for $89

Now, one important thing to note about Airalo is that you’ll need to keep an eye out for the provider in each country. Suppose you ever have trouble connecting to the Internet during your trip. In that case, it might be because you’re connecting automatically to networks and need to select a network manually instead.

When you purchase the eSIM, you’ll get access to the list of networks supported in each country.

Holafly Belgium

Alternatively, you could look at your options on Holafly . You can read our Holafly review to learn more about this eSIM store. I’ve also tried this eSIM provider in Europe, and it worked fine. Their Europe eSIM work in 32 countries (including Belgium), and they offer the following plans:

  • Unlimited data for 7 days for $27

Nomad Belgium

Finally, Nomad is also a great eSIM provider. Here’s an overview of the plans available for Belgium:

  • 1GB, valid for 7 days for $8
  • 3GB, valid for 30 days for $15
  • 5GB, valid for 30 days for $17
  • 10GB, valid for 30 days for $24
  • 20GB, valid for 30 days for $34

Final Thoughts On SIM Cards In Belgium

As you can see, getting a prepaid SIM card in Belgium or even an eSIM for your travels in Belgium is pretty easy. You’ll even be able to stay connected wherever you go in Europe without changing your SIM card, especially if you purchase a European SIM card .

I believe the eSIM card is the most convenient way to get data in Belgium if you wish to have data upon your arrival. This way, you won’t need to go to a store to buy a SIM card. Obviously, you need to make sure your mobile phone supports eSIM first.

Best Tourist Sim Cards in Belgium in 2024

belgium travel sim card

If you’re planning a visit to Belgium, having a reliable sim card is essential for seamless communication and easy navigation. Whether you need to find the best restaurants, get directions to your accommodation, book a taxi, or share precious moments with your family through photos, internet access plays a crucial role.

While roaming is an option, international fees can accumulate quickly, making it more cost-effective to opt for either an eSIM or a local sim card for access to local phone rates. Fortunately, obtaining either of these options in Belgium is a straightforward process, but it’s important to know which one suits your needs best.

This comprehensive guide aims to provide all the information you require to purchase a sim card in Belgium, including current pricing details and recommendations for the top sim card options available.

Table of Contents

Best sim card in belgium for tourists.

The best sim card in Belgium is the Airalo Belgium eSim . Belgium is one of the unique countries where it is both cheaper and more convenient to purchase an eSim than it is to purchase a physical sim card from a local mobile network operator.

For most people visiting Belgium I recommend the $12.5 USD (11.5 EUR) Airalo eSim which includes 5GB of data or the $9 USD (8 EUR) Airalo eSim which includes 3GB of data, both valid for 30 days.

The interesting part is that Airalo even uses the Proximus network which is the best network in Belgium. If your phone supports eSims then it really makes no sense to buy a local sim card. Just buy your Airalo eSim before you depart then activate it when you arrive in the airport with the free wifi – no need to visit a store or install a physical sim card.

If your phone isn’t esim compatible (most phones these days are, including all iPhones since 2018), then the best local sim card in Belgium is the 10 EUR Pay&Go+ prepaid card by Proxumus . When you buy this sim card you pay 10 EUR and get 10 EUR credit and 3GB of data making this the cheapest prepaid sim card option in Belgium. The only annoying part is that you’ll need to top up extra if you want more than 3GB data and 3GB isn’t a lot.

Belgium Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in Belgium costs 11.5 EUR (12.5 USD) in April 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Belgium will cost between $4.50 USD and $30 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Belgium which includes 5GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $12.50 USD.

Belgium Sim Card Providers

In Belgium, there are three main SIM card providers that dominate the market: Orange, Proximus, and Base.

Orange is one of the largest telecom companies in Belgium and offers a wide range of SIM card options to meet the needs of both individuals and businesses. They provide reliable network coverage and have various data plans and calling packages to choose from.

Proximus is another leading telecom company in Belgium known for its extensive coverage and high-speed internet services. They offer SIM card options with flexible data and calling plans, catering to the diverse needs of their customers.

Base is a popular choice for those looking for affordable SIM card options without compromising on quality. They offer competitive data and calling rates, making their services budget-friendly for many users.

Overall, these three providers, Orange, Proximus, and Base, cater to the majority of mobile users in Belgium and provide reliable connectivity options.

How to Get a Sim Card in Belgium

Identify mobile providers: Orange, Proximus and Base are your best options in Belgium.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Belgium

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Belgium at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Belgium then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Belgium have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Orange, Proximus and Base. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Belgium are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Belgium with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

The better option is to purchase an eSim online. We’ve written more on that below!

Belgium eSim

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to Belgium. The Airalo Belgium eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

In order to get set up with an Airalo eSim , all you need to do is visit Airalo here and purchase the eSim online (the $12.50 USD plan is suitable for most travellers). Once you’ve purchased the sim card Airalo will email you instructions and a QR code. Following these instructions should take just a couple of minutes, then you’ll have a sim card in Belgium without having to venture outside.

Airalo Belgium

Our preferred eSim provider in Belgium is Airalo . We used them, alongside a local sim card on another device, for our most recent trip to Belgium and found the service to be equal to the local sim card but without the hassle of acquiring a sim card in a store.

Airalo’s Belgium eSim uses the BASE and Proximus networks to provide data and connect users to the internet. You can expect very good coverage and reliability with the BASE and Proximus networksnetwork as they are amongst the best mobile internet operators in Belgium.

Here are the plans and prices for Airalo’s Belgium eSim:

1GB data valid for 7 days – Price: $4.50 USD 2GB data valid for 15 days – Price: $7 USD 3GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $9 USD 5GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $12.50 USD 10GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $20 USD 20GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $30 USD

For most travellers we recommend the 5GB data plan for $12.50 USD which is valid for 30 days. Some travellers may prefer a larger plan, whilst travellers visiting for just a couple of days may be fine with a smaller plan.

Holafly Belgium

An alternative eSim provider we can recommend is Holafly.

Holafly’s eSim is a suitable option for travellers who require large amounts of data, such as digital nomads and people who work online while they travel. All of Holafly’s Belgium eSims offer unlimited data.

Holafly’s Belgium eSim uses the Proximus PLCnetwork to provide data and connect users to the internet. This network will provide reliable speeds and coverage while in Belgium

Here are the plans and prices for Holafly’s Belgium eSim:

Unlimited data valid for 5 days – Price: $19 USD Unlimited data valid for 7 days – Price: $27 USD Unlimited data valid for 10 days – Price: $34 USD Unlimited data valid for 15 days – Price: $47 USD Unlimited data valid for 20 days – Price: $54 USD Unlimited data valid for 30 days – Price: $64 USD Unlimited data valid for 60 days – Price: $84 USD Unlimited data valid for 90 days – Price: $99 USD

What is an eSim?

Embedded SIM (eSIM) is a digital SIM card that is permanently built into devices like smartphones, tablets, or smartwatches. Unlike physical SIM cards, it doesn’t require insertion or removal.

Instead of a physical card, the eSIM is an integral part of the device’s hardware and can be remotely programmed and activated by a mobile network operator. This enables users to switch between different mobile networks or plans without the hassle of physically swapping SIM cards.

eSIM technology offers convenience, flexibility, and ease of use, especially for frequent travelers or those who frequently switch between mobile networks or travel internationally. It eliminates the need to buy and insert physical SIM cards, making it easier to manage multiple mobile connections on one device.

To activate an eSIM, users can either scan a QR code provided by their mobile network operator or manually input the activation details. Once activated, the device can connect to the chosen mobile network and use voice, data, and messaging services just like with a physical SIM card.

Why Use an eSim?

There are several reasons why utilizing an eSIM can be advantageous: – Convenience: No need to physically insert or remove SIM cards when switching networks or plans, especially useful for frequent travelers. – Dual SIM functionality: Allows for two active mobile numbers on one device, useful for separating personal and work numbers or managing multiple phone lines. – Space-saving: Embedded eSIMs eliminate the need for physical SIM card slots, freeing up space within devices for smaller sizes or additional components. – Remote provisioning: Activation and management of mobile plans can be done remotely, eliminating the need for physical SIM cards or store visits. – Future-proofing: As eSIM technology becomes more popular, more networks and providers support it, enabling users to take advantage of new services and offerings. Overall, eSIM offers flexibility, convenience, and future-proofing for mobile connectivity, making it a compelling choice.

eSim Supported Phones

eSIM technology is becoming increasingly popular and is supported by a growing number of smartphones and other devices. Here are some examples of eSIM-compatible phones:

Apple iPhone series (iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, etc.): Apple was one of the early adopters of eSIM technology and offers support for eSIM on various iPhone models.

Google Pixel series (Pixel 3, Pixel 4, Pixel 5, etc.): Google’s Pixel smartphones also support eSIM functionality, allowing users to activate and use eSIMs.

Samsung Galaxy series (Galaxy S22, Galaxy Note 20, etc.): Many of Samsung’s flagship devices now come with eSIM support, enabling users to utilize eSIM technology.

OnePlus devices (OnePlus 7, OnePlus 8, etc.): OnePlus has included eSIM support in some of its smartphone models, offering users the flexibility of using eSIMs.

Motorola Razr (2020): The latest iteration of the iconic Motorola Razr features eSIM compatibility, enabling users to use eSIMs for cellular connectivity.

These are just a few examples, and the list of eSIM-compatible phones continues to expand as more manufacturers embrace this technology. There’s a very strong chance your phone supports eSims so if you’re unsure we recommend looking it up on our list of eSim supported phones .

How to Use an eSim

Using an eSim is new for many travellers, however, the good news is it’s surprisingly easy to get set up – even for the technologically challenged!

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Obtain an eSIM: There are multiple ways to acquire an eSIM. You can purchase an eSIM online from a provider like Airalo (which we recommend) or directly from a mobile network operator. Some devices also allow you to scan a QR code provided by your carrier to download the eSIM profile.

Activate the eSIM: Your eSim provider will send you instructions to activate the sim. This will usually involve scanning a QR code, entering an activation code, or downloading the eSIM profile directly onto your device.

Set up the eSIM: Once activated, your device will guide you through the eSIM setup process. This typically involves selecting the eSIM as your preferred mobile plan, configuring settings like data roaming, and entering any necessary authentication details.

Enjoy the Connection: Once the eSIM is set up, you can use it as you would with a physical SIM card. Make calls, send messages, browse the internet, and use data services as needed. You can also switch between eSIM profiles if you have multiple eSIMs installed on your device.

Buying a Sim Card at Brussels Airport in 2024

belgium travel sim card

Planning your trip to Belgium flying to Brussels and wondering if you can buy a sim card at Brussels Airport on arrival? This is a complete guide with everything you need to know before buying a sim card at Brussels Airport.

Don't get stuck with high roaming charges when traveling to Belgium. Stay connected with a Belgium prepaid sim card or may be an e-sim card for Belgium is an even better idea...

Find in this guide a comparison of the Belgium tourist sim cards sold at Brussels Airport, up to date prices as of April 2024, where to buy a sim card, everything about e-sim cards for Belgium, my recommendation, a vlog about my arrival and experiences at Brussels Airport, info about EU data roaming, international sim cards and more.

Staying connected is the first thing I look for when planning my next trip, it simply makes traveling much easier. Depending on the length of my trip and of course the price I either buy a local prepaid sim card on arrival or I order an e-sim card on the internet.

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for traveling in Belgium over buying a prepaid sim card at Brussels Airport. Getting an e-sim card is much cheaper than buying a prepaid sim card on arrival at Brussels Airport. Belgium e-sim card plans start from $4.5 USD.

The best buy prepaid tourist sim card at Brussels Airport is a Lycamobile sim card at the luggage belt sim card shop. For €30 EUR ($33 USD) you get 10 GB data for 1 month. In comparison for $30 USD you can buy a data-only e-sim card for Belgium with 20 GB data.

Arrival at Brussels Airport

Brussels Airport is only ranked as 23rd biggest airport in Europe. So don't worry, you will not get lost and it is not that big and busy. Brussels Airport is easy to navigate. When you get out of the plane you are redirected to the passport control area. Brussels Airport has e-gates, so it mostly is a smooth pass and no big lines.

You then get to the baggage claim area where you pick up your bags. Here you can find ATM's, public transportation info as well as a sim card shop. After you walk through the customs baggage check you walk out into a small arrival hall. There is only one exit. You will find a coffee shop right in front of you, the car rental companies are on your right hand side and on your left hand side there is a WH Smith store, a fast food restaurant and a fairly big supermarket.

Best sim card at Brussels Airport in 2024

After comparing all the Belgium prepaid sim cards for tourists at Brussels Airport and the online available international sim cards and e-sim cards for Belgium Traveltomtom comes to the conclusion that e-sim cards for Belgium are the cheapest way to stay connected when traveling to Belgium.

You can already get an e-sim card for Belgium with 5 GB data for 30 days for just $12 USD. Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Belgium via  Airalo or SimOptions .

However, Traveltomtom understands that not everyone is able to use e-sim cards and when looking at the best buy at Brussels Airport Traveltomtom recommends a Lycamobile sim card for €30 EUR ($33 USD) with 10 GB data.

Keep in mind that a similar physical prepaid sim card can be ordered online for $24.90 USD, see below for more info.

If you are really looking for the cheapest sim card available at Brussels Airport then you have to buy a Proximus sim card for €20 EUR ($22 USD) but you also only get 3 GB data.

Buying a sim card at Brussels Airport is much more expensive than in Brussels city center. If you have the patience to wait until you get to the city you can walk in to any of the mobile internet operator stores and buy a sim card in Brussels center. The prepaid sim card deals in official phone stores in Brussels city center are much better than at Brussels Airport.

Mobile Internet & SIM cards in Belgium

Belgium boasts a highly developed mobile network infrastructure, ensuring seamless connectivity for both locals and visitors. Whether you’re an expat, a tourist, or simply looking to stay connected on the go, choosing the right mobile internet and SIM card plan is crucial for a hassle-free experience. In this article we’ll delve into the different options and present you the best deal for your money.

Table of Contents

Quick Answers

5G is being rolled out across Belgium. It’s already available all along the Belgian Coast and in more then 95 cities.

Proximus is known to have the best infrastructure and network coverage in Belgium.

Our partner Airalo offers eSIMS with 10GB for 20$, which is a better deal then any other prepaid sim card in Belgium.

Both Orange and Base offer 8GB for 15€, which is currently the best offer on the Belgian market. Base customers have to manually trade up their calling time for the extra gigabytes. Proximus comes second with 6GB if you trade up your calltime for data as well. However the eSIM card from Airalo delivers the best deal with 10GB for 20$

Mobile Network providers in Belgium

Belgium has three mobile network providers: Proximus, Orange and Telenet/Base. Depending on which current mobile network provider you’re using, your cellphone will automatically connect with one of them.

Data roaming in Belgium

Due to EU regulations, European Citizens are entitled to use their mobile phone plans at no extra cost while roaming within the European Economic Area, which includes Belgium.

For travelers from outside the EU, these roaming costs can be expensive and add up quickly . Therefore it’s always advised to check with your current network provider about the roaming costs in Belgium.

Most travelers will choose to turn off roaming and either purchase a local sim card, or an electronic sim card to avoid these pricey roaming costs.

E-Sim Cards

An eSIM is a digital chip that is embedded in your device and connects you to a mobile network. It works the same way as a traditional SIM card, but you do not need to insert or remove a physical SIM card. Most smartphones built since 2018 have this eSIM option.

eSIMs are becoming increasingly popular as they offer a number of advantages over traditional SIM cards. They are more convenient, as you can easily switch between plans or carriers. You’ll be able to receive phone calls and sms on your main phone number, whilst using the eSIM for data without having to pay for roaming costs.

With the eSims from Airalo , you can get 10GB of data for 20$, which is a better deal then you’ll get with a physical pre-paid sim card in Belgium.

eSim for Belgium

Purchasing a SIM Card in Belgium

When your phone doesn’t support e-SIM cards, a regular pre-paid SIM card is still a great option to dodge roaming costs and have access to mobile internet.

Where to buy Belgium Sim Cards

As a tourist or expat, you can easily purchase a Belgian SIM card at one of the official retail stores of the major mobile operators, as well as from many supermarkets, convenience stores, and kiosks. Expats can also purchase their SIM cards online on the mobile operator’s website.

All SIM cards sold in Belgium must be registered. That means you’ll have to provide some proof of identity upon purchase.

Recharging your Belgium Sim Card

Recharging your Belgian Pre-Paid Sim Card is in most cases best done online, as it will get you some better deals and bonuses with some providers. Except from Orange, since their websites are not in English.

Prepaid Sim cards in Belgium

The Belgian mobile market is dominated by three major players: Proximus, Orange, and BASE. These operators offer a wide range of prepaid and postpaid plans, catering to diverse needs and budgets. Let’s explore them further into detail.

Proximus is the largest mobile provider in Belgium, with the widest network coverage. It offers a wide range of plans, including prepaid and postpaid options.

Their pre-paid cards are called Pay&Go. At first, the pricing looks a bit complicated and underwhelming, however thanks to the online deals, bonuses and possibility to exchange call credit for additional data, they do offer a fair good deal.

Top up your pay&go sim card online and receive a bonus, valid for 31 days.

When you don’t need the call credit, you can exchange it for mobile data. If you trade in 12€ you’ll get 3GB of mobile data. That means that you can get 6GB of mobile data for a 15€ recharge.

More info : https://www.proximus.be/en/id_cr_prepaid_cards/personal/mobile/prepaid-cards.html

Orange is the second largest mobile provider in Belgium. It offers a good range of plans, including some of the most affordable options on the market.

The Tempo Giga plan offers the best data plans for pre-paid sim cards from this provider. Their best deal is the 15€ for 8GB data , however this plan doesn’t give you any call time or SMS.

With the tempo giga plan, you have unlimited calls to other Tempo Giga plan customers, except with the cheapest 10€ reload.

There’s also a Tempo Easy plan, which is focused on more call time and less data.

For some strange reason, this big international player only offers its local websites in the local languages. Therefore it’s only available in Dutch and French.

Telenet / Base

Telenet/Base is the third largest mobile provider in Belgium. It is known for its high-speed internet connections, and it also offers a good range of mobile plans.

Topping up your credit with 10€ or more, will give you unlimited call time to other Base phone numbers in Belgium. You can recognize these phone numbers since they all start with +048

Don’t need the call time? Then you can swap it in for extra mobile data instead! Get 2gb of data in exchange for 10€ call credit, 4gb in exchange for 15€ call credit and 8gb in exchange for 25€ call credit.

Thanks to this exchange policy, you can get 8GB of data for 15€

Tariffs for your call credit in Belgium and Europe: €0.25/min – €0.12/SMS – €0.25/MMS – €0.50/MB

Mobile Vikings

Mobile Vikings is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), which means that it does not own its own network infrastructure. Instead, it leases network capacity from Proximus. Mobile Vikings is known for its innovative plans and its customer service.

With Mobile Vikings you’ll get unlimited SMS in Belgium . Unlimited calls to other Mobile Vikings are also included with each plan.

On the downside is that they don’t have any physical sales points and their pre-paid plans aren’t as competitive as those from Base, Orange or Proximus.

What’s the best pre-paid sim card for data in Belgium?

Now that I’ve explained the different and sometimes confusing pricing plans, lets compare them. I will use the 15€ credit as a benchmark and purely focus on mobile data, since this is the most important for tourists. Extra bonuses for topping up online, or exchanging call time for extra data will also be included.

And the winner is… Telenet / Base. Due to the lack of an English interface, Orange loses the battle for best pre-paid sim card for tourists in Belgium.

Data roaming for non-Europeans is best avoided in Belgium. If your phone supports an e-SIM, you’ll obviously get the best deal with Airalo with 10GB for 20$. When it comes to physical pre-paid sim cards, Telenet/Base is the absolute winner, where you can get 8GB for 15€.

Which is the Best Prepaid SIM Card Plan for Mobile Calls and Data?

This article is a comparison guide for five prominent mobile service providers on their best prepaid SIM card plan in Belgium . By presenting the mobile prepaid plan tables on a single page, consumers can make a more informed choice on the desired value that they want to spend and the advantages offered by comparing.

*The 4G Mobile Coverage Statistic and the price plans for all Belgian mobile operators below are checked every 6 months to ensure the highest accuracy.

(Last Mobile Tariffs Check: 25 Jan 2022)

Mobile Network Operators

In Belgium, the three principle mobile network operators are Proximus, Orange and BASE.

Their MVNO Partnership

Although Proximus, Orange and Base are the primary mobile network operators in Belgium, there are also other Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) leveraging on their networks to offer competitive services to the consumers.

Belgian Institute for Postal services and Telecommunications (BIPT) provide a list below of the commercial partners of the three major network operators last seen in November 2018. Now, the information could not be found anymore.

  • Proximus : Scarlet Mobile, Schedom/Dommel;
  • Orange (Ex-Mobistar) : Lycamobile, Voo;
  • BASE (Telenet Group) : Carrefour Mobile, Ello Mobile, JIM Mobile, Ortel Mobile, United Telecom, Mobile Vikings, Transatel, Vectone Mobile

4G Mobile Coverage Statistic

With the change of interface for BIPT, the latest information on the page was not found too. Hence, the data below would be the last update as seen in November 2018.

Comparison Guide

Choose your mobile number.

Do not be surprised that you can choose your preferred number if you purchase your first SIM card from the mobile store instead of ordering it online. If you order online, the telecom company can send you any mobile numbers. You have to resign your fate to accept it. That happened to me in the past when I ordered a SIM card online.

I walked into two stores one day and asked the staff to show me a list of all the mobile numbers available for sales. I chose a mobile number that was easy to remember and has a special meaning. If you do not ask the staff to show you the list of mobile numbers, they will select one number randomly and sell it to you.

Why Use a Prepaid Card?

You may not make a lot of calls due to limited contacts when you first arrive in Belgium. A prepaid card will take away the monthly commitment to pay when one is not working. It is deducted from the prepaid amount whenever one makes a call.

The maximum validity of the credit is 12 months provided by some mobile companies. Prepaid card plans which last for a long time allow you to retain back your mobile number while you go back to your country and then, return to Belgium later. It is suitable for frequent travellers.

In Belgium, it is easy to switch from a prepaid credit to a monthly subscription plan with the same or different mobile company free of charge. It is never too late to upgrade later.  Do note that all SMS and data plans below last for 1 month only except for Orange Tempo Touch.

Out of Bundle Rate

The prepaid plans in Belgium are sometimes bundled together with free SMS and data volume for one month. Some plans come with free calling minutes as well. What remains one month later is termed as the “Out of Bundle” rate.

The tariff for “Out of Bundle” rate is usually €0.30/min, €0.10 to €0.15/SMS and €0.10 to €0.50/MB of data surfed when you have used up the bonus or when they expire, whichever comes first. You will receive the bonus again for your next top-up.

Best Prepaid SIM Card Belgium

Consider the following points based on the analysis of these five mobile operators to get the prepaid SIM card plan most suitable for your need.

» Do you want to call more or do you want to surf more?

» Credit that lasts for one year is usually charged at €0.30/min for a call. On the other hand, call time that is charged cheaper per minute has credits that expire in 4 to 6 months’ time.

» Depending on the mobile service provider, the validity of the credit lasts between 4 to 12 months before the next recharge. If you do not call often or not in Belgium most of the time, it is recommended to take a prepaid plan that can last 1 year without topping up.

Live in Belgium Recommends Europe Prepaid Card

The Belgian Government is the major shareholder of Proximus who owns 53.51% of the company share at the point of writing this article. Pride itself as being “an impatient network”, Proximus (previously known as Belgacom Group) beats Orange Network in territory coverage by merely 0.05%.

Formerly known as Mobistar, Orange started in 1996 and was a joint venture between France and Belgium Telecoms. Mobistar changed its name to Orange following the footstep of its parent company in France (Orange S. A.) in France after rebranding.

From the 4G mobile coverage statistic quoted above, Orange has the highest reliability rate of a marginal win over Proximus and BASE.

The current website language and its customers’ online portal service are available only in Dutch or French. It does not support the English language at the moment. If you do not understand Dutch and French languages, use a translation tool.

Fortunately, the menu on the phone has the English language as an option after inserting a SIM card. Or, you can simply walk into Orange outlet and ask for assistance.

Orange has three types of prepaid plans currently. Please take note of an online top-up, only credit cards issued in Belgium can be accepted. The credit is valid for one year for all their plans.

Telenet Group Holding recently acquired BASE on 11 February 2016 for 1,325 million. It is the third-largest mobile operator in Belgium. The strength of its territory coverage is the Northern part of Belgium, which is the Flanders. The BASE telco has the most number of Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) under its sphere.

Before I confuse you with the two tables below, BASE has only one type of mobile prepaid plan. The two networks below indicate the different bonuses that users will receive when they call a BASE user or to other telco network users.

Mobile Vikings

Mobile Vikings managed by VikingCo was previously 50% owned by the company, BASE. BASE then sold its share to Medialaan on 11 February 2016 on the same day after its acquisition by Telenet Group Holding. Medialaan also got hold of the remaining 50% share of VikingCo. Medialaan is now the sole owner of VikingCo. Mobile Viking under its wings continues to operate on BASE network infrastructure.

Mobile Vikings have two types of mobile prepaid plans for users who want to CALL more or SURF more. As Mobile Vikings have no physical stores and thus, lower maintenance costs, the saving is passed to the consumers by offering more call time and astonishing data volume among its competitors.

On the downside, you cannot walk into the shop anytime to ask for information quickly. I sent Mobile Vikings a few emails to test their response time. They replied back on the same day or the next day on my three email enquiries.

Not a bad record considering some mobile service providers took more than a week to reply back or had absolutely no response. Despite the disadvantage of not having a shopfront, many users in the forum gave positive reviews and recommended Mobile Vikings specifically for their generous amount of data volume promotion.

Lycamobile is an MVNO operating under Orange network infrastructure. It packages itself with highly competitive national and international calling rates to some countries, such as Brazil (€0.01/min), China (€0.02/min), Turkey (€0.04/min), Morocco (€0.06/min) and Mali (€0.06/min). In fact, one might feel overwhelmed when presented with a wide selection of mobile plans online. The Lycamobile prepaid card is mainly targeted at those that need to make a lot of overseas calls to get the best deal.

How to Top-Up Lycamobile Prepaid Card?

For their prepaid plan, one can order a free SIM card online. There are a few options for mobile top-up after you receive the SIM card.

  • Top-up credits of €10, €20 or €30 online.
  • Purchase a Top-Up Voucher from any participating retail outlets by following the dialling instructions on the Top-Up Voucher to activate the PIN Code. The retail outlets can be seen easily on the streets such as ‘ dag winkel’ (day shop) or ‘ nacht winkel’ (night shop) with the Lycamobile signage displayed outside the shops prominently.
  • Call the Hotline to top up.

Summary: Comparison Tables for 5 Belgium Mobile Operators

Best europe sim card with abundant internet data (more than 10gb).

SimOptions provides a Europe SIM Card which allows you to use it in 50 countries and islands in Europe, inclusive of Belgium . The prominent advantage of the European SIM Card is its huge internet data volume of 5GB, 10GB, 12GB and 20GB. If you need to use more than 5 GB of internet data, then Europe SIM Card is a cheaper option than the Belgian Prepaid SIM Card.

The most prepaid card internet data found in Belgium is Mobile Viking, 8GB data at €25  whereas SimOptions Smart Silver for 10GB is only €29.90 . The best seller is Smart Comfort 20GB at €49.90 . So, get the delivery of the Best Europe Sim Card right to your doorstep now!

Registration of Prepaid SIM Card Required by Law

The Government wants to prevent the misuse of unregistered mobile numbers anonymously as a measure to counter-terrorism. Hence, every recharge must link to an identifiable person. All operators are required by law to register new prepaid cards from 17 December 2016. Before this date, anyone can buy a prepaid SIM card in the store without any other form of registration.

Existing prepaid card users must register their personal detail with the service provider before 7 June 2017. The registration can be done online (if this service is available) or in a store with your eID, passport or other forms of identification card. Thus, the mobile number not registered within the stipulated time will be disconnected and no longer be able to use the service.

On the other hand, consumers that have automatic top-up may not be required to register as their personal detail could already be inside the database. The same roaming benefit might not apply to the United Kingdom after the Brexit in spring 2019. Refer to more questions and answers in the European Commissioner.

EU Roaming Charges Abolished

Starting 15 June 2017, EU roaming charges are scrapped. It means that whenever you make a call or use mobile data when travelling abroad to 28 EU countries, you will not incur additional charges. It is a piece of good news for non-EU travellers as they can buy one prepaid SIM card and use the mobile data roaming in many European countries.

These are the 27 countries in which the EU roaming charges are abolished: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and in the countries of the European Economic Area: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway. If you need a SIM Card that covers more than these 28 countries, you have to check out this Europe Sim Card .

The same roaming benefit does not apply to the United Kingdom anymore after the Brexit in spring 2019. Refer to more frequently asked questions from the European Commission .

Leave us a comment about the current mobile service provider or plan that you are using. Are you happy with it?

Hello MissSJ. I am trying to switch to BASE from VOO. They sent me the SIM card that I ordered online. I couldn’t activate the card and the reason they gave me was that they needed to scan my ID card. I could buy this but:

1. I was a customer of BASE before for 5 years only with my passport. They never asked me for the ID card. 2. If this is a standard policy and EVERY new (?) customer had to go to a SHOP to have their ID card scanned, that would defeat the purpose of ordering online. I mean what’s the point of ordering online if you end up at the store no matter what?

Any ideas of what might be going wrong? Do you know if I can stop my mobile subscription and pay a fee to keep my number in Belgium? That would be very useful. Thanks!

' src=

Hi Adam, the law now requires you to register your sim card with an ID card even if it is prepaid card from 17 December 2016 onwards. Before that, you need no registration at all.

If you are using a prepaid card and wants to keep the number, you have to top up once before the expiry date and keep repeating the procedure. If it is a post subscription, you can check if you can change the number to a prepaid system and then do the top up once in a while before it expires instead.

Hi again MissSJ and thanks for getting back to me. I re-read the part of the mandatory registration in case I missed something. Just one note about passports: I first visited a BASE shop where the employee (whose system couldn’t read my otherwise perfectly functioning e-id) told me that they weren’t accepting passports as you mention in the article. Either the law changed or there was a malpractice from his side.

Unfortunately I have a contract with VOO (that I was tricked into accepting but that’s a whole other story) so I can’t just pay for a card once every year. I was hoping that since the phone numbers do not belong to the companies anymore, I could keep the number for a small fee to the regulatory authority. Until I figure out what to do.

I will still keep looking for alternatives. Thanks anyway.

I like more Carrefour Mobile. Vectone Mobile is fake. I recharge my vectone and I can not used sim card of vectone.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Carrefour Mobile is a reputable company so the SIM cards that they are selling should not have any problem. Even if it has, you can always make a complaint and get it replaced.

Hi Miss SJ, I bought a SIM card (Tempo Giga) from Orange two months ago and wonder if I am top up online with an international cc?

Hi Wendy, do you mean an international ‘credit card’? No, I don’t think you can because I have the same Orange Tempo Giga card as you and I could not top up with my Singapore credit card either. You can only top up with a card issued by the Belgian bank. I also had read the same clause somewhere on the Orange website.

Mobile Vikings asks for 15 euros when a new number is ordered. Do you know if 15 euros can be used for purchasing bundles or do we need to pay more?

Hi Elif, €15 is the activation cost for a new Sim Card which includes delivery no matter which plans you choose – Prepaid or Subscription. You have to top up the amount of your selected plan after receiving your prepaid card.

International Roaming is an extra feature you can add to your mobile plan. It lets you use your phone in different countries by connecting to local phone networks that you temporarily rent. International Roaming allows you to use your phone in Belgium (and other European countries) for calls, texts, and data.

To use international roaming, Check with your phone contracts to see if they offer international roaming plans. For some contracts, your international roaming might have been already enabled (you would not realize it unless you travel to other countries).

International Roaming can be very expensive, depending on your country. If you are not sure about the rate, we recommend to buy SIM card (explained below) instead.

Buy SIM Cards or eSIM

smartphone technology communication 1284501

For short stay tourists, it is popular to buy a prepaid local SIM card. A SIM card is a tiny card that you put into your phone. It helps your phone connect to the network so you can make calls, send texts, and use the internet. It works for both Android and iOS (iPhone).

You can buy SIM cards on your country’s online shopping site (Amazon etc.) or buy after arriving Belgium, at airports, convenience stores, and phone shops. We strongly recommend you to buy on your country’s online shopping site because you can have better instruction in your own language and you feel prepared before your trip!

Changing SIM cards by yourself looks a bit scary for the first time, but do not worry! Remember to keep your own SIM as you need it again when you are back after your trip.

Rent Wi-Fi router / Mobile Hotspots

Wi-Fi Router

If you have multiple devices or are traveling with friend and family members, consider renting a Wi-Fi router (mobile hotspot). These portable devices provide Wi-Fi access and can connect multiple devices with a password.

You can rent the device in your own country (online or travel agency) . You can also rent it in Belgium and other European countries, mostly at airport. We recommend to rent it in your own country as you can have instructions and helpdesk in your local language.

Use Public Wi-Fi

wi fi internet wifi wireless wi fi 1655553

Most hotels, cafes, restaurants, and major public places in Belgium offer free Wi-Fi access . You can use these Wi-Fi connections to stay connected for messaging, emails, and light internet browsing.

Use Wi-Fi to make internet-based calls (VoIP calls) . Apps like WhatsApp, Skype, FaceTime, and others support voice and video calls over Wi-Fi.

Internet Access in Belgium >>

Before making a decision, compare the costs and benefits of each option based on your usage needs and the duration of your stay. Additionally, it’s always a good idea to check with your mobile carrier to understand their international plans and policies to avoid unexpected charges.

9 BEST International SIM Cards for Travel (Buyer’s Guide • 2024)

SIM cards are a royal pain in the butt when travelling. Every time you land somewhere new, you have to perform the same song and dance of going out of your way to get a new sim pretty much as soon as possible.

Usually what happens is that you land in the airport and then you either get ripped off buying a SIM card there or navigate to town without any connectivity. Once you’re in town, you have to navigate a foreign city sifting through local SIM providers, various plans, and also probably getting lost along the way. It’s not the ideal way to start a vacation and I cannot even count the hours I’ve lost shopping for sims in new countries.

That’s why buying one of the best international SIM cards is THE way to go.

An International SIM card is one which will work all over the world meaning that you never have to change it again – no more messing around at the O2 Kiosk in strange airports!

Now, to set the record straight, while there are cheaper travel SIM cards in existence, they still aren’t exactly cheap. Nine times out of ten, a local SIM card is always going to be the cheaper option for budget backpackers.

Maybe you’re a digital nomad who always needs to be connected, maybe you’re a high-flying businessperson with fancy business attire who makes busy business calls while on holiday or maybe (like me) you are just sick of having to change sims.

Either way, this is the list of the best international SIM cards on the market! I’ve done all the leg-work and the research to deliver an international SIM cards review in full. So let’s get ourselves connected.

Orange Holiday Europe Prepaid SIM Card

  • > Extremely reliable in Europe

International SIMs, roaming SIMs, travel SIM Cards whatever: a rose by any name can still order you a pizza when you don’t want to leave the guesthouse after all right? That’s what an international SIM card is, a SIM card that will have you hooked up from “anywhere” .

Why did you put ‘anywhere’ in quotes?

Because it’s a highly variable anywhere. “Anywhere” really means from the countries that the international SIM covers. That said, some of these travel SIM providers cover over 200 countries.

That also said, there are only 195 countries in the world so I’m not sure how they mathed those numbers out. Still unsure, have a look at our guide to local vs international SIM cards .

So, how does an international SIM card work?

Without getting too technical, an international SIM card isn’t programmed to one specific network. It’s programmed to operate on a number of networks in a number of different geographical locations – specifically, networks using the GSM (Global Systems of Management Communications) framework.

That’s why to use your cell phone internationally with a travel SIM card it needs to be:

  • GSM-compatible (many phones are).
  • Unlocked, i.e. not tied to a provider.

Do be sure about that unlocked phone bit before you go ahead and buy a new one.

Hacker googling

Basically, global SIM cards will plug into a local network from the country you’re travelling to… Consensually, of course.

That’s why coverage so strongly varies among the many international SIMs. Some SIM cards are for worldwide use and programmed accordingly. Some SIM cards are for international roaming in certain regions like Asia, the USA, or Europe (usually, omitting a third of Europe in their coverage).

For example, you’ll need a different sim card for Canada and the USA in most cases, but in Europe you’ll more than likely be able to use the same one.

Who benefits from buying an international SIM card?

Well, like I said, not so much the longterm backpacker types . A local SIM card is pretty much always cheaper and much more practical (and reliable) for long stays in any country. Unfortunately, actual cheap international sim cards don’t exist yet.

Country-hoppers , on the other hand, may want to consider buying some sort of prepaid international SIM card. Buying local sim cards in Europe for only 1-2 weeks of use eight times in a trip is nobody’s idea of fun, especially if you care about data usage and double especially if you care about plastic ending up in the ocean.

Businessman talking on the phone with a internationally roaming

People living the digital nomad lifestyle may also benefit from a travel SIM. Though a local SIM is much more equipped for longterm stays in a country, sometimes the options or service is crap and sometimes you’ll spend long stretches in transit which is a perfect time to crunch out a few hours. Besides, there is no rule that says you can’t have two SIMs. A prepaid international sim card might be the best option here (more about that later).

Lastly, business people or people that take frequent short trips will benefit from a SIM card for international travel. I might be stereotyping here but I kinda feel that these folk are less concerned with the costs associated. Plus, most SIM cards for overseas use tend to have 1-year validity for purchased credit, so it’s totally viable to park your SIM after a trip and then pop it back in for the next one.

Beginning the list are the top international SIM cards for travelling that do everything a SIM card should do: call, texts, and mobile data . These SIMs have some pretty major coverage globally and for most travellers in the world, are more than sufficient.

Of course, there has to be a best-of-the-best in this international sim card comparison. So first up–the best travel SIM card!

#1 The Best International Physical SIM Card – OneSim

OneSim

Ok, so what makes OneSim the best travel SIM card? It’s a fine difference between the first few candidates but OneSim edges out on top for a combination of versatility, pricing, and reliability.

First up, they offer multiple different SIM cards each catering to different travelling needs INCLUDING (but not limited to) 2 awesome e-Sim options :

  • OneSimCard e-Sim World (From $9.95) – Coverage of 150 countries with free incoming calls on EU numbers.
  • OneSimCard e-Sim Asiana (From $9.95) – Specially designed for Asia and Oceania. Data packages available.

If your phone is not yet e-Sim ready, then worry not because OneSim also offer some excellent deals on plastic sims:

  • OneSimCard Universal ($29.95) – Coverage of over 200 countries but with a more limited data service (50+) countries.
  • OneSimCard Expedition ($34.95) – Offers much the same coverage as the OneSim Universal travel SIM but with way more data coverage. It’s the choice for the explorers.

OneSim

How OneSim Works

You’ll get a $10 bonus credit with any OneSIM roaming SIM card purchase, but once that’s gone, you’ll have to continue buying data plans. Rates vary wildly by both the choice of travel SIM card you are using and the country you’re in so you’ll need to check these rates to see if they suit you.

You’ll receive two numbers: a European (Estonian) number and a choice of one from the USA, UK, Australia, or Canada. Incoming calls on the primary European number is free in a large coverage of countries or starting from $0.25/min otherwise. Outgoing calls also start from $0.25/min (dependent on locations) and receiving texts are free.

Casual data rates start at rather hefty $0.20/MB . However, what makes this such a good prepaid international SIM card is that there is a lot of choices to lower your costs. You can buy data bundles ranging from one/two weeks to a month divided by zone or region. There are also discount plans and bundles available for call rates. This makes the OneSIM one of the best international SIM cards for data as well.

So, is it worth it?

Although not strictly the cheapest international SIM card on the market, the wealth of choices means that you can tailor your SIM card to your world travel needs and minimize costs. The added bonus is that OneSim has been kicking around for a while so they know the market well.

They provide a reliable service, as well as a bunch of neat extras, to keep their clients happy chappies. If you’re looking for the best sim card for international travel, OneSIM is definitely one you should consider getting.

#2 Best Global eSim Provider – GigSky

Gigsky-branded

If you have a modern phone (iPhone 11 , Samsung Galaxy S21, etc or above) it will probably be eSim compatible. This means that you don’t actually need a plastic SIM card but can simply download an eSim via GigSky the same way you would download an app.

When I first heard of eSim about one year ago, it was something of a niche product simply because most travellers were using phones and devices that were not eSim compatible. However that is changing fast and by 2024, an estimated 80% of travellers will use eSim. The eSim marketplace is a very exciting one and the providers are contently innovating to come up with some new, better, cheaper packages – according to our research, GigSk are currently leading the pack.

belgium travel sim card

How GigSky Works

I had the pleasure of reviewing Gigsky and It’s really very simple. You either download the GigSky App (which we do recommend) or else go to their website and check out their “Global Plans”. You buy the package you want (in the 5GB World Plan) and download it not your phone BEFORE you fly, using either a link or a QR code.

The joy of eSim is that you can install it before you leave and then activate as soon as the plane touches down meaning you are rocking and rolling all over the world before you even get your luggage.

GigSky offer 1 Global Package only – 5GB over 30 days for $69.99. I can be topped up (if you somehow burn through all 5GB) but it cannot be extended past the 30 days.

So, Is It Worth It?

Well, $69.99 is a lot for a 30 day package but International Sim Packages do not come cheap. GigSky also have a wide range of global carrier partners meaning their offer better connectively than most platers in this space.

Overall though, in terms of sheer convenience yes GigSky is worth it – you you can browse for and install an eSim from the comfort your device and get it ready to use before you even leave home which saves a whole lotta hassle. However, the package does NOT include an actual phone number which is a bit of a bummer.

#3 Great Global eSim Package – Sim Local

TravelSim

Sim Local is recognized as a global leader in the travel SIM card and eSIM retail market. The company specializes in serving global travellers, enabling them to stay connected while avoiding expensive roaming charges. During my review of Sim Local , I was impressed to see they provide local SIM cards and eSIM profiles directly to customers through a variety of channels, including retail stores, kiosks, vending machines, a mobile app, and an eShop.

Their services are aimed at offering significant savings on data, calls, and texts compared to traditional roaming options, and they also offer a range of mobile handsets and accessories tailored to the needs of travellers.

How Sim Local Works

First up, note that Sim Local are an eSim-only provider so if you’re phone is not eSim ready…go elsewhere. Providing it is, you simply hop over to their site or get the app and check out their global packages. At the time of writing the site offers their own brand one for just $10 for 3 days, or an Orange one that costs $28.00 for 14 days.

I’ll be frank, eSims are still often more expensive than buying physical sims but they are a lot easier to install and to operate and best of all, you can install them before you even leave home. In my view, $28.00 for 10GB of data over 14 days is good value for an international sim but bear in mind it don’t come with a local numero.

#4 A Worldwide SIM Card – WorldSIM

WorldSIM

WorldSIM gets a mention on this list because it’s another puller in the market with some comparatively awesome rates. It’s also got some really weirdly expensive outlying rates. As such, we certainly don’t feel like it’s a fit for the best SIM card for international roaming.

How WorldSim Works

The WorldSIM international SIM card has no purchasing fee- woo! Now, before you get too excited, it does require a top-up of credit at purchase.

That means that you’re paying a minimum of $33.75 plus shipping . For $67.50 of credit, shipping is free.

The casual rates for outgoing calls, texts, and data usage are the cheapest I’ve found so far with data coverage extending to countries missed out on by OneSim. Except, a lot of the rates in various countries for incoming calls are shockingly high.

As for the data bundles? No idea. Their website isn’t working for that page and is just stuck in an infinitely loading loop.

Our gut says no. But, you do you. You shouldn’t base your decisions on buying an international SIM card on the gut instincts of a stranger online. All the same though, our gut says no.

Between the mildly bait-and-switch-y “$0” SIM purchasing fee, the janky and unwieldy website, and the weird incoming call rates that could potentially trap an unwitting consumer, WorldSIM in review doesn’t feel like an international SIM card worth purchasing, especially in comparison to other choices on the market.

Are you turn-of-the-century generational that eschews actually phoning people online for commenting how much you miss them on their latest Insta post? What a coincidence – me too! Rather than risking being ripped off when buying a local SIM card, get your hands on an international data card instead.

These are the best international  data SIM cards for those of us that scoot by without the extras.

#1 Best Data Only eSIM Card for International Travel – Jetpac

Jetpac eSim

Jetpac is a Singapore based eSIM company who offer packages, designed primarily for travellers and Digital Nomads. They offer various data plans that can be used across many countries, and the service includes features like free airport lounge access if your flight is delayed.

Jetpac eSIMs are compatible with a range of devices, including many models from Apple, Samsung, and Google. To activate a Jetpac eSIM, users need to sign up on the Jetpac website or app, choose a plan that fits their travel needs, and then scan a QR code to install the eSIM on their device.

We love Jetpac for its ease of setup and reliable connectivity. JetPac makes it a handy tool for international travel, ensuring continuous access to mobile data across multiple destinations. While they don’t offer local numbers, we love that most of their packs last for 30 days by default so you can just concentrate on how much data you need.

Wanna know more: Check out our detailed Jetpac eSim card review here.

How it Works

The Jetpac worldwide eSIM card comes in a variety of different data packages. Data can be topped up with a number of plans ranging from 100 MB up to a slammin’ 25 GB ! The prices of data top-ups are:

  • 1 GB – $1
  • 3 GB – $10
  • 5 GB – $25
  • 10 GB – $30
  • 25 GB – $38

Absolutely. I mean, come on it starts at one-freaking-dollar and works all over the world. All in all we’d consider this one of the best pre paid international data only sim cards on the market.

#2 A Simple Data SIM Card for Worldwide Travel – Surfroam

Surfroam

Yay! No prepaid data packages, no contractual mumbo-jumbo, no running out of data right when you settle in for a long Netflix and poop session: Surfroam keeps it Pura Vida!

It’s data-only with coverage of 200+ countries – even Afghanistan and Yemen are covered! So, what’s the go?

Essentially, you pay €45 for the physical SIM card (which includes €25 credit) and then top-up as you go with pack options starting at €25 . You’re charged a pay-as-you-go rate per megabyte starting as low as €0.01/MB . So that’s way cheaper than the KeepGo data roaming sim card, right? Not quite…

Rates vary substantially by country so while this going to be a cheaper option across, say, Europe, it may not necessarily pan out that way in other places. That said, prices are still pretty cheap for most places and tend to beat out KeepGo.

As a final note, there is an eSIM (€30) available with the same data rates.

Ok, so ‘simple’ might be stretching it upon reflection, however, once you’re away, its streams ablaze! If you’re jet-setting and changing countries a lot, you will need to stay keyed in as to the rates .

Otherwise, the coverage significantly beats out KeepGo, and in many cases, Surfroam will end up being the cheapest international data SIM card you can purchase. It’s the simplest choice for staying connected pretty much anywhere in the world.

#3 The Best International SIM Card for Europe – Orange Holiday Europe

Orange Holiday Zen/Europe

Are you just doing a little banger holiday in Europe and need a physical SIM card for your travels? Orange has got you covered. Specifically:

  • Orange Holiday Europe SIM Card
  • Orange Holiday Zen SIM Card

The Orange Holiday Zen is for light usage or a short trip. It’s a straight prepaid SIM card for travellers in Europe and it couldn’t be simpler.

For $27.29 , you get 8 GB of data, 30 minutes of calls worldwide, 200 texts, all lasting for 14 days before it expires. The Holiday Zen covers 30 countries in Europe including all the heavy-hitters, if you need a sim in Italy , Greece or Spain it’s perfect but it certainly doesn’t cover all of Europe (my boy Serbia – forever underrepresented). Still, this makes it one of the best European SIM Cards for travellers.

The Orange Holiday Europe takes all of that and just upgrades it: 20 GB in data, 120 minutes, and 1000 texts for $44 . The same coverage of countries applies and it’s a 14-day expiry again.

Orange also partners with a bunch of networks around the world- even offering an Israeli sim card called partner. If you take a look around their website, you can find more far-flung networks than you expected!

Both cards are able to be topped up online for more credit.

Yeah, so I wouldn’t call ‘30 countries in Europe’ an internationally roaming SIM card, but it is a super simple choice for anyone just travelling to Europe for a holiday. It’ll keep you safe in an emergency thanks to that fact that it’s not a data only service. Plus: you’ll have a SIM ready from the moment you land!

Orange is a pretty major sim provider in France so you’ll have a consistent connection. There’s no constant checking of rates calculators either. It’s just a perfectly simple prepaid SIM card for any travellers heading to Europe.

Y’all want more? Another option to look at is getting an Airalo eSim instead.

I think eSIMS are the future gamechanger here. You can download a digital SIM to your phone which has eSIM support.

I use a second phone to provide data to my main phone via bluetooth internet sharing. Wifi sharing can be used as well but bluetooth uses less power. On my main phone I leave the mobile data turned off and use the paired second phone for data. This allows me to use my main phone for Whatsapp, iMessage, email, etc.

10/10 review – exactly the type of info I was after. Plus, I liked your no BS style of writing. Thanks.

Thanks! Very useful! My main concern is regarding how long do the sim cards remain active if you are not buying credit regularly. I usually travel at least once or twice to congresses per year, but I wonder if some of these cards would stop working after a long time inactive. Is that information available for the cards discussed here? Cheers!

Heya, absolutely you can find that info! It’ll be in the terms and conditions/fine print for individual cards/plans. I’d like to say most last at least a year (which always seemed standard for SIM cards in general), but defs check that before you go buying any SIMs. Good question though!

You guys should definitely include DENT, a block chain based international E-Sim card, that offers flexibel data exchange. You can sell your unused data and always find the cheapest offer worldwide and cross boarder operational. Can’t be missed from this list!

Dude – hectic! I’m defs not about to go and update this article, but I looked and DENT seems pretty legit and totally worth the investigation. Anyone reading these comments, you’d be doing yourself a disservice by not scoping them out at least! 😀

Best eSIM For Belgium (Travel With Ease)

Traveling to Belgium and you want to get an eSIM? Then you’ve come to the right place because this guide will tell you about all the best eSim options for Belgium!

Whether you need Internet access for a day or a month, there’s at least one great Belgium eSIM package for you. And some even have texts and phone calls included, which is rare for eSIMs.

At A Glance: Top Esims For Belgium

  • Best Belgian eSIM Maya Mobile
  • Cheapest Belgium eSIM Airalo Belganet
  • Best For Unlimited Data & Calls Holafly
  • eSIM with Text & Calls Orange Holiday Europe eSIM
  • Simple call plan O2 Go Card eSIM

This guide covers all the top eSIM providers for Europe that offer eSIMs for Belgium, as well as a few local providers in the country that mostly sell physical sim cards for tourists. In any case, here’s all you need to know about the best eSim for Belgium!

ESIM Product Comparison

Maya mobile.

Maya Mobile is one of my favorites when it comes to Belgium eSIMs . They offer both affordable small prepaid eSIMs as well as unlimited packages for a range of time from 5 – 30 days

They also allow you to do data-sharing, which makes their unlimited plan ideal for heavier users who are working or traveling with others.

Here are some examples of Maya’s plans:

  • 3 GB/5 Days – $6
  • 5 GB/30 Days – $10
  • 10 GB/15 Days – $14
  • 20 GB/30 Days – $25
  • UNLIMITED Belgium 30 Days – $59
  • UNLIMITED Europe+ 30 Days – $59

Maya often uses the fastest mobile networks in the country too. And in Belgium, they use a combination of Proximus ( the fastest ) and Orange.

The only downside I see with Maya is that you don’t get 5G but their unlimited data plans are comparable to Holaflys in most cases – AND they allow hotspots! YAY

  • Very affordable eSIMs
  • Unlimited data with hotspots
  • Best Belgian Mobile Networks
  • Only 4G LTE

Airalo Belganet

With affordable prices and a variety of per GB data packages, Airalo is often the most popular option for Belgian eSIMs. This international eSIM provider offers data packages including:

  • 1 GB/7 days – $4.5
  • 2 GB/15 days – $7
  • 3 GB/30 days – $9
  • 5 GB/30 days – $12.5
  • 10 GB/30 days – $20
  • 20 GB/30 days – $30

Airalo eSIMs allow you to surf the Internet on the BASE and Proximus networks, which offer good coverage throughout the country. It’s great that you can switch between providers for better service, especially if you plan to travel to more remote regions of the country that aren’t covered with free WiFi. Also, you can use 5G on these networks, provided that your phone supports it.

Your Airalo eSIM for Belgium won’t include a phone number, but that’s the case with most other providers as well. You can still use your original phone numbers to make calls and send/receive texts through WhatsApp or a similar service.

  • Affordable prices
  • 5G on top networks
  • Good customer service
  • No unlimited data

Holafly is the most popular eSIM provider for travelers who need (or want) unlimited data. However, it’s important to emphasize that Holafly doesn’t allow you to create a hotspot and share your data, so they’re not the best option if you want to have an Internet connection on multiple devices.

Holafly’s unlimited data eSIM plans for Belgium include:

  • 5 Days – $19
  • 7 Days – $27
  • 10 Days – $34
  • 15 Days – $47
  • 20 Days – $54
  • 30 Days – $64
  • 60 Days – $87
  • 90 Days – $99

The Holafly Belgium eSIM also comes with 60 minutes of calls, which is a new feature they have added to this program. It’s an Austrian number, but it is usable in Belgium nonetheless.

Holafly eSIMs include access to the three big mobile carriers in Belgium

  • Proximus PLC
  • Orange Belgium
  • Telenet Belgium

Being able to switch as you roam the country means you will have a stable Internet connection no matter where you go in Belgium.

Also, Holafly eSIM allows you to use 5G and 4G/LTE networks, which is great news given how lightning-fast 5G can be.

  • Unlimited Data
  • 5G available
  • 3 networks included
  • No hotspot/tethering
  • No super-cheap packages

Nomad is also a really good option for a Belgium eSIM . They offer a wide range of plans including:

  • 1 GB/7 Days – $6
  • 3 GB/15 Days – $12
  • 5 GB/15 Days – $14
  • 10 GB/30 Days – $19
  • 10 GB/30 Days – $27
  • 20 GB/30 Days – $33

If you use up all the data you initially purchased, you can easily buy more data on their official website. The Nomad Belgium eSim allows you to browse the Truphone network, which is an international network provider with coverage all over the world. You will be able to connect to 4G for fast Internet speeds.

I have to point out that Airalo is cheaper and offers 5G access, so they’re still the better option for weekly plans, but Nomad has better options for monthly plans.

  • Mostly 30 days access
  • 20 GB plans available
  • No 5G access yet
  • More expensive

Orange Holiday Europe eSIM

Orange is one of a few providers that offer all-inclusive eSIMs. The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan is pricey at 40 Euros, but it includes 20 GB of data, as well as a (French) phone number that allows you to make calls locally, as well as send and receive texts.

On top of that, this eSIM is valid not just in Belgium, but in 30+ European countries, so it’s great for travelers who plan to visit other countries in Europe as well. It’s important to note that this eSIM plan is valid for 14 days after activation, and you can purchase a recharge option that allows you to extend the validity of the plan after it expires.

One thing to note is that you can use this eSIM for up to a month, but after that period you will need to complete a KYC (Know Your Customer) questionnaire in order to keep using it, as per requirements of French laws.

  • Text & Calls included
  • 20 GB of data
  • Great combo package for travel
  • Not the cheapest per GB

Orange Holiday Zen eSIM

The Orange Holiday Zen eSIM is essentially the same thing as their Holiday Europe eSIM, but it’s cheaper because it includes less data and free texts/call minutes. You will get 8 GB of data, a local (French) phone number, 30 minutes of calls, and 200 free texts.

This eSIM is also valid in 30+ countries all over Europe, and it’s also possible to extend its validity period after the initial 14 days expire. Registration will be necessary with a KYC questionnaire if you want to keep using the eSIM for more than a month.

  • 8 GB of data
  • More expensive than others

Ubigi might just be your best option if you’re going to travel to multiple countries. This provider also has two Belgium eSIM plans that include:

  • 3 GB/30 Days – $9

They also offer monthly plans that are more affordable, but obviously only make sense for someone coming here regularly. For example, they offer a Belgium eSIM for $9 a month for 5 GB.

And their 500 MB for $2 for 1 day is ideal for anyone making a short trip to Belgium just to see the sights of one city, for example.

  • Great regional plans (Europe)
  • Good for longer stays
  • Not the cheapest

O2 Go Card eSIM

The O2 Go Card is a prepaid Belgium eSIM for tourists that allows Internet access in all countries of the European Union. It costs $25, it’s valid for 30 days, and it includes 10 GB of data, as well as free phone calls on the O2 network in the entire EU.

This SIM card is great value for money, especially if you’re going to travel to countries other than Belgium. You can choose between a physical sim card and an eSIM, and both cost the same which is great. It’s also possible to top up the card when you use up all the data, and the first time you purchase a top-up, you’ll get an extra $2 worth of credit!

  • Very affordable
  • Easy to set up

Benefits of Getting an eSIM in Belgium

The main benefit of getting an eSIM for Belgium is that you will have Internet access everywhere. While the bigger cities in the country have decent free WiFi coverage, if you’re planning to travel to the villages or more remote areas of Belgium, you can’t rely on free WiFi access.

That’s why you should get an eSIM, so you can always have the option of accessing the Internet if necessary. Another advantage of getting an eSIM specifically is that you can use it alongside your sim card, and still receive all the texts and calls you would regularly.

Local Mobile Operators Offering eSIMs in Belgium

Proximus is one of the best local providers in Belgium that offer eSIMs. However, all the eSIMs from this provider all available only with their postpaid plans, so they’re not a good option for tourists who want a prepaid card.

They have a prepaid Pay As You Go plan with a physical sim card that you can purchase for just 5 Euros. It will get you 10 Euros of credit plus 3 GB of data, which is a really good deal. It’s worth noting that this is a web promotion you can take advantage of only in their online store, so you won’t get the same deal if you purchase a tourist sim card in a physical store.

Orange is another major network operator that offers Belgium eSIMs, but from what I understand these are sold exclusively to business customers. You’re better off buying one of the Orange Holiday Europe plans online, than trying to purchase one in a physical store.

Devices Compatible with eSIM in Belgium

All the devices that support embedded-sim technology will be compatible with eSIMs in Belgium. This includes all iPhones from the iPhone XS onward, Google Pixel phones from the second generation onward, and Samsung Galaxy S phones from the S20 onward.

It’s worth noting that, while all the iPhones released in the past 5 years support eSIMs, not all Androids do. Many Android manufacturers are still reserving this feature for their best and most expensive phones, so if you don’t daily drive a flagship Android, it’s probably for the best to double-check whether your smartphone supports the technology.

Dial *#06# and look for an EID number. This is a unique identifier that indicated your smartphone supports an eSIM. If you don’t see an EID number, it’s likely that your phone doesn’t support eSIMs, and you will need to look for physical sim cards instead.

Data Needed When Traveling to Belgium

Not sure how much data you need for your trip to Belgium? Consider the length of your trip as well as what you need the mobile data for during your time in the European country.

If you’re staying for a little while and you want mobile data just to be able to check directions on maps and access social media and emails, you should be fine with 1-3 GB of data, especially if you have WiFi in your accommodation.

On the other hand, if you consider yourself a heavy user and you plan to watch a lot of movies and videos during a longer stay, it’s best to go for plans with a larger data allowance. Unlimited data is also a good option, as long as you’re fine with the fact that you can’t create a hotspot and share that data with the Holafly eSIM, which is the only provider with an unlimited data package.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can i get an esim in belgium.

Yes, you can get an eSIM to use in Belgium, but you will need to purchase it from an international eSim provider. You currently can’t purchase an eSIM from a local provider as a tourist, because they only include eSims in their postpaid plans.

How can I buy an eSIM in Belgium?

You can purchase an eSIM online and use it in Belgium. It’s possible to buy an eSIM from Proximus (partner of Vodafone), but only if you are willing to purchase a postpaid plan.

How do I activate my eSIM in Belgium?

You can activate the eSIM in Belgium by turning on mobile data and connecting to the Internet. That’s if you already added the eSIM to your network plan, which you should be able to do either by scanning a QR code immediately after you receive it or by adding the eSIM manually through the network settings on your phone.

The 5 Best eSIMs for Belgium in 2023

Visiting Belgium is a dream for those who like food and drinks, especially chocolate, waffles, and beer! This country is very popular among tourists that like to have a good time while traveling.

There are plenty of activities to do, from attending festivals of electronic music to visiting places with 19th-century architecture.

If you are wondering about how you will stay connected in Belgium to use your social media, you are in the right place.

Here we want to show you the best eSIMs that you can use in Belgium. Let’s start!

What Are The Best eSIMs for Belgium?

Let’s start talking about one of the top options. Orange – SimOptions is at the top of our list because it offers the most complete packages. All the eSIMs we are going to show you here include mobile data. However, you never know when you will need to make a call or send text messages. If you are one of those who foresee any situation, this eSIM from Orange might interest you.

These eSIMs are an excellent option for travelers that are going to visit Europe, not only Belgium. It is because it has coverage in 30 destinations on the continent. This makes everything easier for travel enthusiasts. We know that it is very difficult to go to Europe and do not visit more than one destination!

As we said before, Orange is an outstanding option. It is not only because of what we have mentioned before. Orange also offers data-only eSIMs, which is good if you are sure that you do not need more than that.

You should consider these options for your trip to Belgium:

The package includes data, unlimited minutes, and text messages in Europe. Besides, this one has coverage in 53 countries in Europe! It means you could travel everywhere across the continent without having to change your eSIM.

They do remind the customers that although the eSIM works in all of Europe, it has to be activated first in France.

These are the details:

My European eSIM | $ 44.90 - 30GB

  • Calls/SMS: Calls only
  • Credit Validity: 30 days
