Pirate FM name to go after being taken over by national radio station

Bauer Media Group says it is supporting the few people with roles that will be put into consultation as a result of changes

Pirate FM is to change its name after being taken over by a national radio station. The adored Cornish station will become Hits Radio Cornwall in just over a month.

As part of the switch-up the Redruth -based station, which first aired in 1992, will evolve to include shows from national presenters including Fleur East, Sam Thompson, Sarah-Jane Crawford, Gemma Atkinson and Mike Toolan.

The only current presenters to remain are Neil and Saffy who will become part of the brand-new station line-up. It looks like listeners will also have to say goodbye to other favourites like Cornwall's Hometime with Johnny and Holly and Scott Temple.

Bauer Media Audio UK, which owns the station, said listeners will enjoy a playlist of the biggest hits and the biggest throwbacks - including songs from Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa and Harry Styles to Eminem and Rihanna – as well news of all the biggest things happening right now and chat with some of music’s biggest stars.

It added the station will become digital only, with Greatest Hits Radio Cornwall moving onto the FM slots - 102.2 (Caradon Hill) and 102.8 ( Redruth ) from April, and will introduce a brand-new local afternoon show, with more details to follow.

Both stations will be available on DAB digital radio, online and via smart speakers and will continue to provide local news and information for Cornwall, including traffic and travel as well as commercial opportunities for local partners; and fundraising for disadvantaged young people within the community through its Cash for Kids charity will also carry on.

Gary Stein, group programme director for the Hits Radio portfolio, said: "Pirate FM is a well-loved and recognised station identity within Cornwall and we want to build on its fantastic success and secure its future by transforming it into a nationally recognised brand, bolstered by a national marketing campaign to ensure it has even more opportunity to grow.

"Alongside its local Breakfast show hosted by Neil and Saffy and local news and information, we’re excited for audiences to have access to new programmes from some big name broadcasters, both on Hits Radio Cornwall and Greatest Hits Radio Cornwall which shall take over Pirate FM’s current FM slot."

It confirmed the changes mean a "small number" of roles will be put into consultation and freelance contracts reviewed. Bauer Media Group says it is is fully committed to supporting all affected individuals throughout this period.
