Getting around

Kyoto features a rectangular street system. Unlike the streets in other Japanese cities, most of central Kyoto's streets are named. The main streets running from east to west are numbered in ascending order from north to south, and are about 500 meters apart from each other, with several smaller streets in between. For example, Shijo means "4th Avenue" and Nijo means "2nd Avenue".

Kyoto's city center with the highest concentration of dining, shopping and entertainment opportunities, is located around the junction of Shijo-dori (4th Avenue) and Kawaramachi-dori (Kawaramachi Street). JR Kyoto Station is located south of the city center at the height of Hachijo-dori (8th Avenue).

The most prominent north-south street is Karasuma-dori (Karasuma Street), which runs from Kyoto Station via the city center to Kyoto Imperial Palace . Another north-south axis is Kamo River, about one kilometer east of Karasuma-dori.

Kyoto has a rather inadequately developed public transportation system for a city of its size, consisting of two subway lines, a dense bus network and several railway companies, whose lines are not always conveniently connected with each other. Taxis and bicycles can be worthwhile alternatives.

The recommended way to get around Kyoto by public transportation is to use an IC card , such as Icoca, which is accepted on virtually all trains and buses in the city. Alternatively, travelers intending to use buses or subways extensively, should consider one of the 1-day passes available. See the ticket section below for more details.

Below is a simplified map of the railway and subway lines of Kyoto:

Few of Kyoto 's tourist attractions are located close to subway or train stations. Instead, Kyoto has a dense bus network with direct bus lines from Kyoto Station and/or the city center around Shijo-dori and Kawaramachi-dori to most major sights.

Kyoto is served by multiple bus companies. For central Kyoto, the green Kyoto City Bus buses are most numerous and useful. The red buses by Kyoto Bus are second most prominent and tend to be convenient to access sights in more outlying areas of the city.

The tourist offices provide a useful English network map for the Kyoto City Buses, which makes it quite easy for foreign visitors to access tourist attractions by bus. Despite the good map and English displays and announcements, however, getting off at the correct bus stop can still be stressful, especially in crowded buses.

Since buses are small and operate surprisingly infrequently even on some major routes, buses to major tourist sights can often get crowded, especially on weekends and during holidays. In addition, much time can be lost when buses get stuck or only proceed slowly in the busy street traffic. Consequently, it is recommended to use subways and trains as much as possible, and use buses only for medium and short distances, for example, from the closest subway station to the destination.

Most buses are entered through the back door and left through the front door. The fare has to be paid when leaving the bus. Inside much of central Kyoto, there is a flat rate of 230 yen per ride. Outside the flat fare zone, the fare increases with the distance. Click here for more information on riding buses.

There are two subway lines in Kyoto , the Karasuma Line which runs from south to north along Karasuma-dori and stops at JR Kyoto Station, and the newer Tozai Line which runs from east to west and meets the Karasuma Line at the intersection of Karasuma-dori and Oike-dori.

Japan Railways

All JR lines, including the Tokaido Shinkansen , pass through or commence at JR Kyoto Station . JR trains can be a convenient for accessing the Arashiyama area (JR Sagano Line) and some attractions in southern Kyoto along the JR Nara Line, e.g. Fushimi Inari Shrine and Uji .

Other Railways

  • Hankyu Railway connects Kyoto with Osaka . The line initially runs below Shijo Avenue from Kawaramachi westwards in direction of Osaka. It is a good option for accessing the area around Katsura Rikyu , from where a branch line also connects to Arashiyama .
  • Keifuku Railway (also known as Randen) operates two tram-like train lines in northwestern Kyoto. For train lovers, a ride on these trains is a small attraction by itself. The lines can be an option for accessing Arashiyama and the area around Ryoanji and Kinkakuji .
  • Keihan Railway 's main line runs next and parallel to Kamo River, but unfortunately does not connect to Kyoto Station . The line continues to Osaka and is an alternative to the JR Nara Line to access some of the attractions in southern Kyoto.
  • Eizan Railway operates two train lines from where the Keihan Line ends, Demachiyanagi Station. One line leads to Kurama , while the other runs to the base of Hieizan .
  • Kintetsu Railway connects Kyoto Station to Nara . Note that some trains on the Karasuma Subway Line continue to run on the Kintetsu Nara Line and the other way around.

By sightseeing bus

The Sky Hop Bus is an expensive but convenient way to visit Kyoto's most famous sightseeing spots. Double-decker buses with an open-air second floor run clockwise every hour from Kyoto Station in a large circle around the city, stopping near major tourist sites along the way, including Nijo Castle , Kinkakuji , the Imperial Palace , Heian Shrine and Kiyomizudera . A 12-hour pass costs 2500 yen and a 24-hour pass costs 3600 yen and can be purchased through Klook .

Kyoto is probably the Japanese city with the highest concentration of taxis . Especially in the city center, taxis are found everywhere. Taxis can not only be a more comfortable, but also an economical alternative to buses on short to medium distances for groups of three or more.

Most taxis accommodate up to four passengers (not including the driver), while larger vehicles are able to accommodate an additional fifth passenger. The rate starts around 610 yen for the first two kilometers and increases by 80 yen for every additional 300-400 meters traveled.

Kyoto City's simple layout and flat terrain make it easy and convenient to explore by bicycle . Numerous bicycle rental outlets can be found around the city, especially around major stations, such as Kyoto Station or in popular biking areas like Arashiyama . Typical rental prices are around 1000-1500 yen per day for basic bicycles and around 1700-2000 yen for electric assist bicycles. Some lodgings may provide their guests with bicycles for a small fee or for free.

Kyoto is generally a bicycle-friendly city with relatively easily navigable roads and a handful of cycling routes, most notably along Kamo River. Designated bicycle parking is often freely available around popular sightseeing spots. The situation is a little bit more challenging in the city center due to congested roads, crowded sidewalks and a lack of designated parking areas. Also, distances to some of the more outlying sightseeing spots should not be underestimated. For example, it is about eight kilometers (typically a 45-75 minute ride) from Kyoto Station to Kinkakuji or about ten kilometers to Arashiyama .

Passes and Tickets

See also our separate page about the various passes available for the Kansai Region .

The prepaid IC card available in Kyoto is called Icoca . It does not give you any discounts over regular tickets, but it makes the process of taking trains and buses easier, as you do not always need to buy a ticket for each ride. Icoca cards can be purchased through ticket machines at JR stations. Local non-JR railway companies offer their own IC card called Pitapa ; however, Pitapa is a postpaid card that works more like a credit card and is targeted at residents.

Icoca and Pitapa can be used on virtually all trains and buses in and around Kyoto (and most other major cities in Japan). Additionally, eight other IC cards from other major cities of Japan can also be used on the trains and buses of Greater Osaka and Kyoto, including Suica, Pasmo, Kitaca, Toica, Manaca, Sugoca, Nimoca and Hayakaken.

The Kansai One Pass is a special version of Icoca exclusively for foreign tourists that additionally qualifies for discounts at various attractions in the Kansai Region . It is available for sale at Kansai Airport and major railway stations in the Kansai Region.

Furthermore, the following one day passes are available for Kyoto :

  • Kyoto Sightseeing Card (1100 yen) Unlimited use of Kyoto's two subway lines and most buses (including Kyoto City Buses, Kyoto Buses, JR buses and Keihan buses) in central Kyoto and outskirts, including Ohara and Daigoji on one calendar day. The pass also comes with discount coupons for selected sights in Kyoto. It can be purchased from ticket machines in subway stations, at bus ticket centers and from some hotels. The pass can pay off especially if you visit outlying areas such as Ohara . The downside is that, besides the subway lines, the pass does not cover any other trains which are often a convenient means of getting around.
  • Kyoto Subway One Day Card (800 yen) Unlimited use of Kyoto's two subway lines on one calendar day. The card can be purchased from ticket machines at subway stations. It generally pays off if you use subways more than three times per day, however its value is restricted by the subway's limited coverage area.

Getting through the airport and traveling to your destination with large suitcases can be challenging. For those times, let the staff take your luggage with and travel more easily via limousine bus. There are many bus departures from Kansai International Airport to major stations. Remember, travel time will vary depending on road conditions, such as traffic, so this option is recommended only if you're not in too much of a rush.

We will now explain how to get from the Arrival Gate to the Bus Stop. If arriving at Terminal 1, use the first-floor exit towards the front of the same floor. If arriving at Terminal 2, go through the front exit and use the pedestrian crossing to the other side. There you will find the bus stop.

The Limousine Bus ticket counter is next to the 1F floor exit

There is also a Limousine Bus ticket counter on the same floor as Arrivals, so you can buy your tickets right there once you have decided to use the bus. There are always Japanese and English-speaking staff available at the ticket counter. If time and money are of no issue, and you just want to get to Osaka via the easiest route possible, then using a taxi is recommended. Airport taxis offer a flat fare to each destination. While this method is rather costly compared to other modes of transportation, because prices are per vehicle, you can split the cost between multiple passengers. The route to the taxi stand is as follows.

Taxi Stand/Taxi Lane

To get to the taxi stand, exit Arrival Gate from the Terminal 1 entrance, and cross the Limousine Bus Lane. There you will see the taxi lanes, with stands numbered from 1-7.

Short Distance Taxi Stand

No. 3 is for travelers without reservations; Nos. 1 and 7 are for passengers with reservations. Choose the appropriate taxi depending on your destination, the number of people, and the amount of luggage. The fare may be higher, but if you ride in groups of 3 or 4 people, you can split the fare. To travel around the large Kansai Area with more freedom, it is recommended to use a rental car. The route to the rental car reception area is as follows.

From the 1F Arrival Gate, head to the 2F, and use the 2F/D Exit to the connecting passage.

Rental car shops are located on the first floor of the Aeroplaza, a complex connected to the Terminal 1 Building and Kansai- Airport Station via connecting passage. The reception counter is a 3-minute walk from the passage on the second floor of the Terminal 1 Building. From Terminal 2 Building, it takes about 7 minutes via a free shuttle bus.

Follow the Aeroplaza 1F information board to the rental car reception area

This is recommended for those traveling with small children or the elderly, or for those who prefer a more leisurely sightseeing trip. From Kansai Airport to Kyoto Station Area, it takes around 1 1/2 hours.

Terminals at Kansai International Airport

Train station and bus stop to the city, jr limited express haruka, haruka discount ticket:, airport bus, regular train, the map of osaka city center, jr regular trains, comparing cost and time it takes for major stations in osaka., after thoughts, how to get from kansai airport (kix) to kyoto / osaka city center..

travel kix to kyoto

Along with Tokyo’s two airports, Kansai Airport is the main gateway to Japan. However, Kansai airport is a little far from city center of Osaka and Kyoto. You can access Osaka and Kyoto easily from Kansai Airport, but you don’t want to be bothered to learn about the train system after your long flight to Japan. So today, I’d like to explain about the different way to access to Kyoto and Osaka city center from Kansai Airport.

You can also watch this article on YouTube. How to Get from Kansai Airport (KIX) to KYOTO / OSAKA

travel kix to kyoto

Kansai International Airport’s airport code is (KIX) and also called “Kanku” by Japanese as abbreviation.  There are two terminals at Kansai International Airport, but most of the users might arrive at the main terminal – Terminal 1.  Terminal 2 is only used for LCC called Peach at the moment, and you can access to Terminal 2 by shuttle bus.

There is a train station in front of Terminal 1, and two train companies, JR and Nankai, can leave the island where the airport is located. When you arrive, go up the escalator and cross to the station. It’s only 1 or 2 minutes walk to the train station.

This is the view of JR/Nankai Train station from the bus stops which is at the arrival floor. You just need to go up the escalator or elevator to the 2nd floor.

The bus departs from the arrival floor. The number of the bus stop differs depending on the destination. Near the each bus stop, there are ticket counters for each destination.

How to Get to KYOTO from Kansai Airport

Haruak by JR, and Rapit by Nankai (blue)

JR and buses are convenient to get to Kyoto from Kansai Airport.

JR runs a limited express called Haruka, which goes directly to Kyoto via Tennoji and Shin-Osaka in Osaka city. If you have a JR Pass, Haruka will be your choice.

JR Haruka trains run every 30 minutes, you can go to Kyoto directly. The fare is 3430 yen for reserved seats and 2900 yen for unreserved seats.

You can get the reserved seat for 1800 Yen to Kyoto if you purchase with IC card ICOCA (not Suica or Pasmo, has to be Icoca) . If you don’t have ICOCA, you can also purchase ICOCA for 2000 Yen (500 Yen is deposit, so 1500 Yen value) and Haruka Discount Ticket together.  It’s 1800 Yen to Kyoto so it’s a great deal. The round trip ticket is 3600 Yen if you return in 14 days. You only can purchase at Kansai Airport station, and need a passport since it’s only for non-Japanese.

You can make online reservation too, but I’m not sure how much it benefits as you cannot read the time after landing at the airport. I’ll put the details about this discount ticket in the description below.

( JR WEST Haruka Discount Ticket details )

travel kix to kyoto

The schedule may change from the time of writing. This is the schedule of November 2022.

You can also go to Kyoto by bus. A bus connects Kansai Airport to Kyoto Station in 1 hour and 30 minutes. The bus runs once every 40 minutes to an hour. The fare is 2600 yen.

The bus is slightly cheaper than the regular fare of the JR’s Haruka and the you can get on the bus right in front of the arrival gate.  However, if I think of the traffic, I don’t find a strong reason to take the bus to Kyoto Station.

How to get Airport bus from KIX, Kansai International Airport

The bus ticket is available at the counter in front of the bus stop, which is located in the right outside the arrival floor.

In case you prefer trains but Haruka is over your budget, you can also take regular train. There are various routes in this case, but JR trains via Osaka is probably the easiest. Just take Kanku Rapid train to JR Osaka Station, and change to Special Rapid Train (Shinkaisoku) to Kyoto. It may have lots of stops, but you only need to change once at JR Osaka Station.

However, if you are going to city center of Kyoto by train, you can take Hankyu Kyoto line from Osaka Umeda station.

How to Get to OSAKA from Kansai Airport

Transportation to Osaka city depends on where you want to go in Osaka city.

travel kix to kyoto

Let’s see the Google map.

Osaka is roughly divided into two areas, Kita (north) are and Minami (south)area, and the center of the north is Umeda, where JR Osaka Station is located. Umeda also has Osaka-Umeda Station on the Hankyu private railway. So it’s good to know that JR Osaka Station and Umeda are in the same place. All private railways and subways other than JR use the name “Umeda”.

On the other hand, there are cities such as Namba and Tennoji in the south. The famous Dotonbori is within walking distance from Namba. This south side is rather downtown, while north side is more department store and offices.

Shin-Osaka, is where the Shinkansen station is. It’s a little off the city center, and located one station north by JR line.

Depends on where you go in Osaka, the best transportation to take will be different.

travel kix to kyoto

The Orange line is Haruka’s route. At this moment, it stops only Tennoji and Shin-Osaka in Osaka City, and doesn’t stop Osaka Station. From Spring 2023, new station is opening in the underground of JR Osaka Station and it will start to make a stop. The black line is JR’s Kanku Rapid, which stops several stations in Osaka City, including Tennoji, Shin-Imamiya, Nishi-Kujo (Transfer to Universal city), JR Osaka Station, and Kyobashi station.

The light blue line is Nankai, both regular trains and the limited express Rapit goes to Namba Terminal. The red line is Osaka Metro Midosuji line, that penetrate the city from the south to the north, going through Tennoji, Namba, Shinsaibashi, Yodoyabashi, Umeda (Right under the JR Osaka Station) and Shin-Osaka. If you go to Osaka City center, you might want to take either JR to Tennoji, or Nankai to Namba, and change to Osaka Metro Midosuji Line, to get closer to your hotel.   *The color is just to explain the map, and not equivalent to the line color.

Now that you know the snapshot of Osaka’s map, let’s get to Osaka City.

travel kix to kyoto

Limited Express Train Haruka JR Haruka stops at Tennoji and then Shin-Osaka. If you go to Osaka city, you will have to transfer at Tennoji.

* Right now, Haruka is passing by near the JR Osaka Station and doesn’t stop until Shin-Osaka, this is because of the rail route Haruka is using to head to Kyoto, but JR is opening a new underground platform near JR Osaka Station in 2023, and stop Haruka there. There should be a schedule update in early 2023, and you will be able to get off at Osaka Station.

You can get the reserved seat for 1600 Yen to Shin-Osaka if you purchase with IC card ICOCA (not Suica or Pasmo, has to be Icoca) . If you don’t have ICOCA, you can also purchase ICOCA for 2000 Yen (500 Yen is deposit, so 1500 Yen value) and Haruka Discount Ticket together.  It’s 1200 Yen to Tennoji, and 1600 Yen to Shin-Osaka so it’s a great deal. The round trip ticket is 2400 Yen to Tennoji, and 3200 Yen for Shin-Osaka if you return in 14 days. You only can purchase at Kansai Airport station, and need a passport since it’s only for non-Japanese.

JR also runs a regular train called the Kanku Rapid, and four trains per hour run to Osaka City. It’s usually bound for Kyobashi Station via Tennoji Station and Osaka Station. It stops at many stations, but you can go to Osaka Station without changing trains. You can transfer to Osaka Metro Midosuji line at Tennoji, and head to the center of Osaka such as Nanba and Shinsaibashi.

Nankai – Regular Train/ Rapit

travel kix to kyoto

Nankai’s regular train

If you go to Namba, Nankai is convenient. Nankai runs a regular train and a limited express train called Rapit.

At the moment of making this video, Rapit is running only every one hour and has many stops on the way to Namba, so the reason to use Rapit would be more for the comfort of the seat.

I like trains and I I needed to eat the sandwich I got at the airport, so I used Rapit. It was a great choice to get to Namba. 🙂

travel kix to kyoto

Rapit by Nankai

If you want to go to a hotel along the Midosuji Subway Line, it would be best to get off at Tennoji if you’re on the JR line, or get off at Namba if you’re on the Nankai line, and transfer to the Midosuji line.

I landed KIX, and the airport was still empty comparing with Tokyo’s airports. However, it was great to see some foreign tourists or business users are back to Japan. One thing I notice is at the Kansai Airport, I saw twice that travelers are asking direction but station attendant or bus attendant seems don’t understand English. Probably they are not used to speak English to explain something outside their specialized job.

It might help to study just a little bit about the direction and transportation before you land Kansai Airport.

From Kansai Airport to Kyoto

Value options to Kyoto, Amanohashidate and beyond

Bonson Lam

What’s the cheapest and quickest way to get to Kyoto and surrounding areas in Western Japan?

The most comfortable option is Japan Rail (JR)'s limited express “Haruka”, which is a dedicated service from Kansai Airport station to Kyoto and sometimes beyond to Shiga. This is the fastest way to get to Kyoto, in just under 77 minutes for a 100 km trip!

Kansai Airport station is just on the other side of the walkway from the Airport Terminal. There are two railway companies operating, JR and Nankai. Nankai is best for Tengachaya, with connections to the Hankyu line to downtown Kyoto and Gion. JR is best for southern Kyoto and for bullet train connections. During peak hour, JR's Haruka operates every 30 minutes stopping at Tennoji, Osaka, and Shin Osaka before arriving at Kyoto. Some trains also stop in Hineno/ Nishikujo (change at Nishikujo for Universal Studios Japan trains). Trains depart at 16 and 46 minutes past the hour from 6 am to 9 am, and also 4 pm to 8 pm. Outside peak hours, the Haruka only operate hourly.

The first train from the Airport is 6:30am and the last train is at 10:16pm, so if you miss it, then the airport hotel is straight after the train station, or get the slower normal express. The last JR normal express that connects with a Kyoto train leaves at 10:47pm, arriving at Kyoto at 12:55am. You then may need a taxi to your accommodation as the Kyoto subway stops after midnight. Alternately you can board the Airport Limousine Bus, with the last service departing at 11:40pm. (2550 yen). There is also an hourly bus service from midnight to dawn going to Osaka.

From Kyoto, the first train is 5:45am and last train at 8:16pm. Trains depart at 16 and 46 minutes past the hour during the peak morning and late afternoon/ evening from Kyoto, and hourly in the off peak times. Train timetables are located at Hyperdia .

Even if you don’t hold the Japan Rail Pass the Haruka can still be a cheap option. Overseas Tourists can buy a 1 day JR West Kansai pass. It is only 2,200 yen with the early bird discount and gives you unlimited access on the Haruka plus all other JR trains within the Airport, Nara, Kyoto and Himeji (except bullet trains). The one way fare on the Haruka from KIX to Kyoto is 3,170 yen (unreserved seat ticket), so you save money even just going to Kyoto. You don’t have to pre-purchase the JR West Kansai pass before you arrive in Japan, you can get it from the ticket office at JR Kansai Airport Railway Station, and it only takes five minutes once you show your passport.

Visitors wanting to travel to Kanazawa area should consider the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass as well, as it provides 5 days of unlimited travel for 13,500 yen.

Visitors heading northwards to the coast (e.g Fukuchiyama , Kinosaki Onsen) , or wanting to go to Okayama , Kurashiki or the ferry to Naoshima in a four day period should consider the JR Kansai Wide pass , which includes bullet trains to Okayama. At 8,500 yen for 5 days this is one of the best value rail passes in Japan, provided you order this online or from overseas (otherwise 9,000 yen if you order this in person at the JR ticket office).

If you are only using the JR West Kansai pass to go to Kyoto, and not back track to Himeji or down to Nara the same day (for example, your flight landed late in the evening), another alternative is to purchase the ICOCA and Haruka discount ticket package . ICOCA is a rechargeable card giving access to all JR and private trains, buses, and subway in the Kansai area. The package contains the ICOCA card loaded with 1,500 yen, a 500 yen refundable deposit, and a one way Haruka ticket to Kyoto. Worth 4,980 yen if purchased separately, the package is just 3,000 yen. A Haruka return ticket + ICOCA package is even better value, at 4,000 yen for just under 8,000 yen of value - provided you use the return Haruka ticket within 2 weeks of activating the package.

There is a refund administration fee of 210 yen if there are credits left when you return the ICOCA card, so the trick is to use all your credits before returning the ICOCA card. For your convenience, you can return the ICOCA card at any JR West station in the Kansai area, though the major stations (e.g Osaka, Kyoto, Tennoji) are more likely to be familiar with this initiative.

Like the JR West Kansai pass, it can be purchased at the Kansai Airport Train Station office, and ordered online before you arrive.

If you don't qualify for the Kansai pass or the ICOCA package, for example you are a permanent resident of Japan, the other option on JR is to catch a normal express (called Kansai Airport Rapid Service) to Osaka and then change to a normal express to Kyoto. This takes at least another half an hour and you may have to stand from Osaka to Kyoto. This will cost 1,890 yen, but for my money and comfort foreign travellers should pay 110 yen extra for the Haruka with the JR West Pass.

Then there is Airport Limousine . More comfortable than the normal express, in the sense that you don’t have to change trains. Operating approximately every 30 minutes, this is a good option if you just missed the Haruka, which reverts from half hourly to an hourly service between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Bus stops are located outside the International Arrivals floor of the Passenger Terminal Building (first floor center). Tickets can be purchased from the ticket vending machines located outside the Passenger Terminal Building on the 1st floor. Go to bus stop 8 for Kyoto. The last bus is 10:10 pm, and it costs 2,500 yen. The 6:05 pm, 8:10 pm, 8:40 pm bus continues after JR Kyoto to Nijo Station, so if your accommodation is near Nijo or Shijo Omiya, the bus is a good choice at those times. Bear in mind the 6:05pm bus is likely to get peak hour traffic and they are a bit slower than the Haruka. It is a bit quicker than the normal express, but also more expensive.

My inside tip with the Airport Limousine is that when you are going back to the Airport, you need to take the right bus. There are two airports in Osaka, Itami Domestic airport (often called Osaka Airport), and Kansai International Airport. Make sure you are getting the bus to Kansai.

If your accommodation is downtown Kyoto (Sanjo, Shijo) such as the Toyoko Inn, Westin , or Khaosan , Nankai and Hankyu railways have a 1230 yen combination ticket, called the Kyoto Access Ticket. You need at least one change at Osaka Subway Tengachaya Station, and depending on the train, possibly another transfer station.Tickets can be purchased at Nankai Kansai Airport Station. For just 300 yen extra you can upgrade to the futuristic Rapit express train from the Airport to Tengachaya. Be at the platform on the hour and at the half hour to catch the Rapit from 9 am to 9 pm, with irregular services outside this window

Lastly for if you have a lot of luggage (e.g. Golf bags, skis, snowboards) AND wanting door to door transport to Kyoto accommodation away from Kyoto Station, there is the MK Shuttle Bus . It costs a little more at 3,500 yen, plus one check in size luggage for free. They don't take bicycles or items of that size unfortunately. You will need to book it by 5 pm 2 days before.

In summary my 6 insider tips are:

  • Get the JR Kansai one day pass or JR Pass for the quickest, value for money and most stress free way to go to Kyoto on the Haruka Limited Express. You need a foreign passport (Japanese permanent residents excluded) to qualify at the JR Ticket Office, or apply in your home country. If you are only going to Kyoto that day, and not backtracking to Himeji or Nara, the ICOCA+Haruka package is even better value.
  • The Haruka will take you to Kyoto in less time and hassle than the bullet train. Outside the peak hours, the Haruka only operates hourly, so if you just missed the Haruka and haven't paid for your ticket already, consider the Airport Limousine bus instead. Otherwise relax at the airport lounge.
  • On the way back, should you want to take the bus, make sure you take the Kansai Airport bus, NOT the Osaka Airport (Itami) bus.
  • If you’re taking the JR Normal Express to the Airport, please check the indicator board on the carriage itself. Some of these trains split in two in Hineno (2nd last stop), with part of the train going to Wakayama, and part of the train going to Kansai Airport. (usually 5 car/ 3 car split). Make sure you are on the correct carriage. All the signs are in English as well, but if you are not sure, ask, or board a middle carriage and look for the luggage carrying passengers in your carriage. If you are on the wrong carriage, you should have time get out of the train and move up or down. The train should stop in Hineno for a bit, so there is enough time to move to the right carriage.
  • Passengers whose final destination is down town Kyoto rather than JR Kyoto, should consider the Kyoto Access ticket if they want to grab a bargain at a little over 1200 yen. However it involves 2 to 4 changes, and takes 100 rather than 72 minutes on the Haruka. If you just missed the Haruka during the off peak hours, the time difference between the two are not materially different.
  • Take the MK Shuttle Bus if you have lots of luggage and want door to door transport to your accommodation.

Have a great trip!

Kansai International Airport (KIX) Airport Guide

Built on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, about 75km southwest of Kyoto, Kansai International Airport (KIX) is the closest major international airport to Kyoto and Osaka. Here’s our full guide to making the most of KIX.

KIX Guide Overview

While many international visitors to Japan fly via Tokyo ( Narita or Haneda ), Kansai International Airport (KIX) is another good option, especially if you plan to spend time in Kansai (Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe etc) or points further west. KIX handles most of Kansai’s international flights and a lot of its domestic flights.

KIX is a spacious modern airport with some excellent shopping and dining options. KIX consists of two terminals: Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Terminal 1 is by far the larger of the two and it contains almost all the shopping, dining, activities and services. Terminal 2 is little more than two warehouse-like buildings servicing budget airlines. Terminal 1 is really the heart of KIX and you won’t have any need to visit the drab second terminal unless you are using a Low-Cost Carrier (LCC).

Other Useful Information

The best way to get from Kyoto to KIX is the Haruka Airport Express train, which costs Y2980 and takes about 75 minutes. You can use a Japan Rail Pass on this train. It also runs from Osaka to KIX (stopping at Shin-Osaka and Tennoji).

Another option from Kyoto to KIX is an airport limousine bus, which costs Y2500 and takes about 90 minutes. There are similar buses from Osaka, Kobe and Nara.

KIX Terminal 1 Guide

If you’ve taken the train to KIX, you’ll arrive in the KIX train station directly opposite Terminal 1. As soon as you clear the turnstiles, you’ll see a sign pointing to Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Most people will take a left toward Terminal 1.

Terminal sign after arrival from train

A few steps will bring you to the start of the bridge to Terminal 1. The arrows are a little confusing – whether you’re flying domestic or international, you should cross the bridge to the terminal.

Arriving at Terminal 1 from the train

If you’ve taken a limousine bus to KIX, you’ll arrive on the fourth floor, which is the international departures level.

Arriving at Terminal 1 by limousine bus

Assuming you’ve arrived by train, you’ll cross the bridge to Terminal 1.

Bridge from train station to Terminal 1

Here’s the entrance to the terminal. This brings you into Terminal 1, 2F, which is the domestic departures floor.

Terminal 1 entrance from bridge to 2F

As soon as you enter the building, you will see elevators on your left. Take these to the 4F floor for international departures check-in. We suggest doing this before exploring the shopping and dining options in this terminal.

Elevator from 2F to international departures 4F

Just past the elevators, you’ll see the domestic departures check-in counters on both sides of you. In front of you will be an escalator. Both of the 2F restaurant halls are behind the escalator (on both sides).

2F Domestic departures

There’s a useful map next to the escalator.

Terminal 1 map on 2F

The landside of terminal 1 is loaded with excellent restaurants. Indeed, for someone who is used to the drab dining options at North American airports (Sbarro anyone?), the options at KIX will leave you wondering: “Why can’t they do this back home?!” Most of the restaurants are located on the 2F (domestic departures) and 3F (shopping and dining floor), but you’ll find a few other options below the Hotel Nikko/Aeroplaza across the way from Terminal 1 (on the other side of the train station), as well as a few small cafes on 1F (international arrivals) and 4F (international departures).

We recommend eating before you pass through security and customs. There are a few restaurants in Terminal 1 airside, but they’re not great and they’re limited.

Terminal 1/2F Domestic Departures Level Dining Options

There are two restaurant halls/food courts on 2F. On the south end (right side as you enter from the train station), you’ll find the Gourmet Avenue food court, which tends to less crowded than the other.

Here are some of the options in Gourmet Avenue:

Mosdo: A version of the MOS Burger chain that also serves donuts (hence, the “do”).

Hotel Nikko/Aeroplaza Restaurants

During busy seasons, all of the restaurants in Terminal 1 can be crowded. At these times, savvy travelers walk across the bridges to the Hotel Nikko/Aeroplaza, which has a small restaurant hall of the 2F level.

Here are the offerings at Hotel Nikko/Aeroplaza:

Matsuya Gyudon: Japanese fast-food beef bowls. Cheap and relatively tasty.

Terminal 1 4F International Departures Floor

In addition to all the great stuff listed above, there are some useful services on 4F, the international departures floor.

4F International Departures

Here are some of the most useful services on 4F:

Your Wrap: If you’re worried about your luggage coming apart en route, why not get it wrapped tightly in plastic?

Your Wrap luggage wrapping service

Repacking Area: Don’t be one of those people desperately opening their suitcases on the floor in front of a check-in counter to redistribute their belongings in hopes of avoiding excess baggage fees. Instead, do your repacking at the designated repacking area, which has a handy scale to see just how much more you have to take out of your suitcase and cram into your carry-on bag.

Repacking Area

Business Center: It’s not particularly fancy, but if you need to use a computer or send a fax, this is the place to stop.

Starbucks: If you need just one more shot of caffeine to get you to the gate, this mini-Starbucks at the back of the hall should do the trick.

Security Wait Time Sign: Security tends to be fast and efficient at KIX, but you can still save a few minutes by finding the fastest line. This sign has the details. It’s near the back of the hall.

KIX Terminal 2 Guide

Terminal 2 at KIX seems explicitly designed to punish people who take Low-Cost Carriers (LLCs). It’s sort of a pain to get to and once there, you’ll wish you had chosen a legacy carrier. It’s really just two warehouses where you stand in line to check in. If you want to do any dining or shopping, do it at Terminal 1 before heading over to Terminal 2.

KIX Terminal 2

To get to Terminal 2, first, head to the KIX train station. From there, look across to see the Hotel Nikko/Aeroplaza building. Take the bridge to that building (there are moving walkways to speed your journey).

Bridge from train station to Hotel Nikko/Aeroplaza

Once there, enter the atrium and look for the signs for the free shuttle bus to Terminal 2 on your left.

Terminal 2 Guide

The trip to Terminal 2 takes a couple of minutes. When you get to the bus stop at Terminal 2, you will see the domestic departure hall on your left.

Terminal 2 domestic departure hall

There’s a small café in the domestic departure hall.

Pronto Café

There’s also a restaurant that serves simple meals.

Lion Restaurant

And there’s a convenience store.

7-11 convenience store

To the right of the bus stop, you’ll find the international departure hall, which is even less pleasant than the domestic departures hall, mostly due to the ever-present crowds.

Terminal 2 international departure hall

After flying through KIX for years, we’ve picked up a few tips:

  • Take the Haruka: The Haruka Airport Express is the fastest and most comfortable way to get to KIX. If you want to avoid the crowds, get a reserved seat or a Green Car seat.
  • Eat landside: The best restaurants are in Terminal 1/landside. There are a few restaurants airside, but they’re not great and usually crowded.
  • Eat under the hotel to escape crowds: The restaurants at Hotel Nikko/Aeroplaza are way less crowded than those elsewhere.
  • Stay at the airport: If you’ve got an early flight or late arrival, stay at the Nikko or First Cabin (see following hotels section).

Recommended Kansai International Airport Hotels

If you’ve got an early morning flight or a late arrival, you may want to stay at or near the airport. Here are the best places to do so:

Hotel Nikko Kansai Airport

(View on Booking.com or Agoda.com ) Right at KIX, this hotel is where we stay when we have early departures. Rooms are spacious and quiet and they can deal with families. There’s nothing like waking up at a reasonable hour and then strolling for one minute to get to the departure hall. Rates can be surprisingly reasonable as well!

Hotel Nikko Kansai Airport

First Cabin Kansai Airport

(View on Booking.com or Agoda.com ) If your finances don’t extend to the Nikko, then this is your only other option right at KIX. It’s a perfectly good no-frills option with small but efficient “cabins”. It’s about a two-minute walk to Terminal 1 and also very close to the shuttle bus to Terminal 2.

First Cabin Kansai Airport

Swissotel Nankai Osaka

(View on Booking.com or Agoda.com ) You don’t have to stay right at KIX to be very near to the airport in terms of time. The private Nankai Line’s Rapi:t express runs from Osaka’s Namba Station to KIX in 34 minutes. Conveniently, the Swissotel Nankai Namba is located directly above Nankai Namba Station. It’s a superb hotel with some mind-boggling views over Osaka and beyond.

Swissotel Nankai Osaka

Hotel Granvia Kyoto

(View on Booking.com or Agoda.com ) As mentioned earlier, the JR Haruka Airport Express runs from Kyoto Station to KIX in 75 minutes. The Hotel Granvia Kyoto is located directly above Kyoto Station. So, you can get a good night’s sleep here and then have a very easy stroll to your airport train. And, it’s a great hotel to boot!

Haruka Express: Osaka and Kyoto airport transfer

April 14, 2023

Haruka Express train

The Kansai International Airport (KIX) services the cities of Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, and Kobe. If you hold a Japan Rail Pass, travel from the airport can be a simple and exciting process, as the Japan Railway West’s Express Haruka train offers direct transportation from the Kansai International Airport to downtown Osaka and Kyoto.

International travelers may find navigating the Japan Railway system to be intimidating, especially if trains are not used extensively in their country of origin. This trek, in particular, can be a bit confusing for first-time users of the Haruka service. This guide is designed to make it clear how to get to downtown Osaka and Kyoto for free on the Haruka Express.

Haruka Express: the Kansai Airport transfer

The Haruka is a limited express, airport rail link train service. The train offers rapid service between Maibara (in the Shiga prefecture) and the Kansai International Airport (KIX), reaching speeds of 130 km/h (80 mph). While the use of this train generally requires both a train fare ticket and a limited express ticket, Japan Rail Pass holders are admitted free of charge .

Each train has six to nine cars, with at least one Green Car , or first class car. Two to three cars on each train are for non-reserved seating , and the remainder are for reserved seating . Each train contains restroom facilities, a vending machine, luggage racks, and is wheelchair accessible. Free Wi-Fi service is also provided. In the interest of passenger safety, smoking is prohibited on all Haruka Express train cars.

How to check the timetables

Haruka Express timetable

Once you pass through the ticket barrier at each station, you will see a timetable for the trains . Be sure to check the timetables for unexpected delays or boarding changes. Look for the name of the train line you are using and the direction (which stations are serviced) displayed at the top of the timetable.

You can then find the train type – in this case “Ltd. Haruka”), the train number , departure time, destination , and platform number scrolling across the digital screen. The departures are numbered from one to sixty. Odd numbered trains (one, three, five, etc.) run south toward the airport, while even-numbered trains (two, four, six, etc.) run north, toward Osaka and Kyoto.

Hi Admin. Im Lina from Indonesia, my first go to japan on January 13th. My flight will be landed at 6 am in the morning and want go straight toTokyo. Hi. My family and I will be using the JR 7 day pass. We will be travelling from Nara to Kansai airport. Correct me if I’m wrong, we need to board the Yamatoji Rapid Service and alight at Tennoji to board the Ltd Exp Haruka. Would also like to know whether we need to make a reservation earlier to board the Ltd Exp Haruka heading to Kansai Airport?

Yes, that is the route covered by the JR Pass to get from Nara Station to KIX airport. Please check Hyperdia for the exact timetables. Reservation for the Haruka Express is not needed. However, you can do it online via this page: https://www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/ticket/pass/howto/ .

Happy travels!

Hi, my husband and I will be arriving Kansai Airport on 13/11 and will travel to Koyasan and thereafter Kumano Kodo; and Wakayama before returning to Kansai Airport for flight home. Appreciate if you can please advise what type of pass I should get. Duration of my trip is 10 days. Thank you.

You can either take the 7-day JR Pass or the 14-day JR Pass. Please keep in mind that for the 7-day JR Pass you would have to pay for one of the two Haruka Express tickets. Also, we recommend you check our guide about how to get to Koyasan as the journey is not fully covered by the pass.

Hi JR rail pass team,

I have 3 questions, hope you can help me! 1. If I need to reserve a one way Haruka for March of 2019, when is the quickest I can begin to reserve? 2. Also there is no guarantee what time I will be able to get through immigration due to heavy congestion in immigration, what if I miss the time to get on the Haruka? 3. I’m a solo traveler with 1 large and 1 medium luggage, will there be space on the train to accompany me? Would a green seat give me more space?

For a solo traveler, you probably won’t need to book a seat in the Haruka Express, it’s usually never full. If you still prefer to book a seat, please check regularly the West JR site: https://www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/ticket/pass/howto/

Also, regarding your luggage, there should be no problem either in the standard section.

last train at 10.16pm is a joke, given kansai airport still have so many night flights touching down. your last train should expand to midnight at least for the tourist convenient.

After 10:16 pm, you can still take the Kansai Airport Rapid Service to Osaka and Kyoto (usually until 11:32 pm). Please check the timetable at http://www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/timetable/ .

Hello, I am Red, I will be going to buy the 4 day JR west kansai area pass. If I activated it to use the Haruka express to kyoto station at maybe 6pm does it end on 6 pm of the fourth day . Or 6 pm – 12 am is counted as first day. I hope this question makes sense to you. Anyway, thank you. I am trying to decide whether to buy kansai one pass or kansai area pass.

The Japan Rail Pass validity period is calculated in days, not in hours, so you should have no problem. Please check our FAQ about the JR Pass validity for further information.

Hi Jrailpass,

Firstly, thak you for all the helpful information. I have a question regarding information you have posted on another comment “To get from Kansai Airport to downtown Osaka just take the Haruka Express (included in your Japan Rail Pass”

We will be arriving at Kansai airport on March 28th, 2019 and staying in Osaka for a day. We will be purchasing a 7 day japan rail pass , but intend to only activate it on the 31st( as we need to use it until the time we leave on the 7th from Osaka). My question, is whether we will still be able to use the Haruka express for FREE from the airport to downtown Osaka even though the pass will not start till the 31st. Thank you

Hi Kirthana! The Haruka Express is free as long as you hold a valid, active Japan Rail Pass . If you haven’t activated it, you will need to pay for this trip separately.

Hi. I visited Tokyo and Kyoto this past July using the JR pass. This November, I plan to visit Osaka (arriving by KIX,) Kobe, and continue by Shinkansen to Tokyo, departing by NRT for the end of my trip. Can I buy the same type JR Pass that I used for Tokyo for my November trip?

Hi Steve! Yes, you can purchase the Japan Rail Pass again for your upcoming trip. There is no limit on the amount of trips you use this pass on. Happy travels!

Dear JRailPass team, I will be traveling to Osaka and Kyoto from 11/25-30/18, will spend first three days in Kyoto and two days in Osaka. What is the best way to get train tickets for the entire trip?

At what time do we have to take the JR Airport Express Haruka from Kyoto station to reach the airport in time? Please advice Thanks.

Hi I am Maui and I will be travelling to Japan this July and I was planning to take theLTD EXP Haruka 24. May I know which platfrom will the train be? 🙂

I am Pauline and I will travel to Japan on December 2018. I will arrive Kansai airport at 21:05, and i going to Kyoto. Due to need to spend some time to go through immigration, collect baggage and change JR ticket, not sure whether can catch up Haruka train schedule 22:15. Is there any train schedule later than this time i can take? Please assist.

Hi Pauline! As specified in this article, Haruka Express’ departures begin at 6:30 AM and continue until 10:16 PM. Later than that it won’t be possible to catch that train. We recommend you to check with your hotel/rental apartment which would be the best way to reach them given this arrival time. Enjoy Japan!

Hi, I am not intending to get a JR pass and would be traveling from Kansai Airport to Shin Osaka via Haruka Express. May I know how can I go about buying the tickets? Do I need to buy the tickets online or can I get them just before boarding the train? I am not sure if I will arrive in time to board the last train.

Hello JR team, I am visiting Japan later in May 2018 and here is my travel plan: 1. Arrive KIX 2. 2*night stay/sightseeing in Osaka city 3. 2*night stay/sightseeing in Kyoto city 4. Take Shinkansen one-way from Kyoto to Tokyo. Depart from HND. What would be the most economical ticket option or combination for this trip? Thanks!

Hi, I need info for November, arriving on KIX on 15. Nov. 2018 at 08.35, and going to Kyoto, from Airpot- what is best way to get there

Hi Marta! As detailed in this article you are commenting, the Haruka Express could be the best way of directly reaching Kyoto from KIX.

I am Kim and I will travel to Japan on December 2018. I would like to go to Shin Osaka Station from Kansai International Airport. I found there have two different costs of JR Haruka Express. From KIX to Shin Osaka station, one cost 3300 yen (one-way) and another one is 1300 yen. May I know what is the different between this two types? Please assist.

If I purchase the ICOCA + HARUKA package round trip to osaka, do I need to pay extra for the HARUKA express train, or is the package includes the fee, also can I use HARUKA express to get off at Tennoji station and make my way to Namba station with the same ticket, or is there a charge for the second leg.

Last, is the return part of the ticket back to the airport a open ticket.

Thank you for your article regarding the JR Pass. However, I am not sure if it’s worthwhile to get one.

I will be in Japan with 3 others and we intend to do the following:-

1. Arrive Kansai Airport and transfer to Kyoto 2. Stay 2 days in Kyoto 3. Transfer from Kyoto to Kanazawa and stay 2 days in Kanazawa 4. Take the bus from Kanazawa to Shirakawago and back to Kanazawa 5. Transfer from Kanazawa to Osaka and stay 3 days 6. One day trip to Nara from Osaka and back 7. Transfer from Osaka to Kansai Airport

Would appreciate if you could kindly recommend what kind of pass should we buy. I am thinking of the 2-day passes while in Kyoto and Osaka. I am just confused and not sure of the train tickets for Kansai-Kyoto, Kyoto-Kanazawa, Kanazawa-Osaka, Osaka-Nara and Osaka-Kansai.

I will be arrived in KIX early morning 23sept, and my plan is straight to go to Tokyo, spend 4 days and will come back to Osaka again spend 3 days include a day trip to Nara and Kyoto and going home from KIX on 30sept.. may i know, is it JR pass worth for me? need your help and suggestion. Thanks

In your case the 7-day Japan Rail Pass would pay off. If you compare the price of the individual trips:

Kansai Airport to Tokyo: 14,500-16,000 yen Tokyo to Osaka: 13,500-14,000 yen Osaka to Nara: 800 yen Nara to Osaka: 800 yen Osaka to Kyoto : 500 yen Kyoto to Osaka : 500 yen Osaka to Kansai Airport: 1,000-2,000 yen

All of them total 31,600-34,600 yen, which is more expensive than the nation wide pass (29,110 yen). Please also note you will be able to use this pass too in some local lines in Tokyo , in Kyoto and in Osaka and hence the savings would be greater.

Hi, After arriving Kansai Airport at 9.35pm on Apr 20, what is the fastest way to arrive Kyoto station by train? Thanks and awaits your feedback soon.

Hi Jacq! The Haruka Express departs every thirty minutes during the day and evening. From the Kansai airport, departures begin at 6:30 AM and continue until 10:16 PM, and take you straight to Kyoto Station . And the best – this trip is included in your Japan Rail Pass !

Hi, Jacq: I flew into Kansai airport on March 28th at about 8:30 pm and it took over an hour to get through the very long immigration line (there were two earlier flights with foreign tourists ahead of our flight waiting in line already). After getting our luggage which took another 30 minutes, we were finally able to go to where the Kansai Airport Limousine bus stops were at about 10:30 pm. We also had five pieces of large luggage and even if we had been early enough to catch the Haruka Express (10:16 pm last train),which we weren’t, it wasn’t guaranteed that I could get all of our luggage into the racks. It would have depended on how much other tourists were going to the Kyoto Station with their luggage since there is only a limited amount of luggage space for each car. The Kansai Airport Limousine buses all have a lot of luggage space and they have no problem with that issue. The only thing is the ride to the Kyoto Station bus stop area will take almost 2 hours vs. 1 hour and fifteen minutes by Haruka Express train. The bus ride is kind of tedious with a lot of slowing down for the toll booths then speeding back up and the curves in the road. I will take a motion sickness tablet before I do the bus ride again. I bought some for the ride back to Kansai airport from Kyoto and I felt better.

hi, I have a JR Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass. I need to arrive at Kansai International Airport around 7 am on 22 April 2018 (Sunday) for my flight home. Your article mentioned that JR pass cannot be use for Kansai-Airport Rapid Service. That means I must take the Osaka Loop Line from Osaka Station to Tennoji Station and then change to Ltd. Express Haruka at Tennoji Station to Kansai International Airport. 1) Can I use JR Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass for Osaka Loop Line? 2) Is Tennoji Station for Ltd. Express Haruka and Osaka Loop Line in the same building? Can I transfer directly from the Osaka Loop Line platform to the Haruka platform. Thanks in advance.

Hi Audrey! Japan Rail Pass can be used to travel in the Kansai Airport Rapid Service, however it takes longer since it has more stops. This train can be taken directly in Osaka Station .

Hi, I was wondering if I need a JR pass from the airport (kix) to Kyoto and from Kyoto to Osaka and Osaka to the airport (kix)? Or is it cheaper to get individual tickets since I’m not going anywhere else?

We (3 adults) will be travelling on 13April 2018 by the first train at 0545h LTD EXP HARUKA 1 from Kyoto station to Kansai Airport. We will be taking a taxi to Kyoto station. We would appreciate you could tell us clearly where shall the taxi drop us to walk to track #30 to board the said train. Thank you.

Hi E Yoong!

For such concrete information we recommend you to check Hyperdia , which offers detailed timetables, platform information, trip duration and exact distance. It will help you greatly in organizing your trips in Japan!

We hope you enjoy your trip!

HI, I am arriving in KIX on June 20, 2018 at 10PM and going to Osaka – close to Nagahoribashi Station. Can you tell what ticket do I need to purchase? Also, we have a total of 7 luggages, is there a room in the train for those? Thanks

Travellers are allowed luggage on board for no additional cost. However, there is a limitation of two pieces of luggage, both of which should have a maximum weight of 60kg and a total of 250 cm in height, length and width. There is a delivery service option. To get from Kansai Airport to downtown Osaka just take the Haruka Express (included in your Japan Rail Pass ) as detailed in this article. Regarding how to get to your accomodation, please check this directly with them – they will be able to provide better advice.

Hi I am traveling to Japan landing at KIX airport at around 6 pm. Do you know how long this express train will take to reach Kyoto?

Hi Stephanie!

As specified in this article you are commenting, the one-way trip from Kansai Airport to Kyoto takes around one hour and fifteen minutes and is free with the Japan Rail Pass .

Hello, I will be travelling to Japan in end of April. Can you guide me on the transportation? 1)27.04.2018 (9.30pm ) reach KIX 2)28.04.2018 to 30.04.2018 – KYOTO 3)30.04.2018 TO 02.05.2018 -KYOTO TO KANAZAWA-SHIRAKAWA 4)02.05.2018 TO 06.05.2018 – FROM KANAZAWA TO OSAKA What type of transportation can I take to reach the destination?

Hi Shirley!

The Japan Rail Pass will fully cover your itinerary:

– Once you land at Kansai Airport, you can take the Haruka Express straight to Kyoto as described in this article. – Once in Kyoto, local JR lines include the Sagano Line and the Nara Line . – From Kyoto you will be able to easily reach Kanazawa in the Limited Express Thunderbird train. This very same train will take you to Shin-Osaka Station later.

We hope you have an amazing trip!

Hello, I have an upcoming trip in May 2018 with 2 adults and 1 infant (1 yr old) and 1 toddler ( 3yrs old). I will be arriving to Kansai from another country. 1. from Kansai take train to Kyoto — stay there for 6 nights *** Take 1 day to Osaka *** Take 1 day to Nara *** the rest of the days stay in Kyoto 2. Then from Kyoto take bullet train 1 way to Tokyo.. 3. Then from Tokyo Air port to home — I’m not coming back to Kansai airport. My questions: 1. Do you think I should purchase JR pass? ( I don’t think I do because I only take 1 way bullet train to Tokyo) 2. Should I purchase Haruka + ICOCA ? I think I should because I need to take the train from Kansai to Kyoto and from Kyoto to Nara (1 day trip), and Kyoto to Osaka (1 day trip) ** ICOCA works in Kyoto subways/ train/buses right? 3. Does ICOCA work in Tokyo train /Subways/ buses?

Thanks, Ann

The Icoca Card is offered by JR West and services JR trains in the regions of Hiroshima, Kyoto, Osaka, and Okayama. It does not work in Tokyo.

Hi JRailPass,

My flight to KIX is schedule to arrive at 3:25pm. I plan to get a 14days JR pass. My route this Nov 2018 will cover KIX-Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka-KIX. I plan to take the Hikari bullet train to Tokyo from KIX upon arrival.

My question is: 1) Where should I board the Hikari bullet train from KIX to Tokyo? 2) Do you think there’s sufficient time for me to catch the last bullet train upon custom clearance and exchange of JR pass? Or should I travel the next day instead? 3) What is the best way to travel from Tokyo to Kyoto?

There is no direct connection from KIX to Tokyo and thus you should take the Haruka Express as specified in this article to either Kyoto or Osaka. Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka are connected with by the Tokaido Shinkansen line so it will be easy to reach Tokyo from any of these 2 cities. This is the easiest way to travel between Tokyo and Kyoto included in your Japan Rail Pass .

As stated in this article, Haruka Express departures from KIX begin at 6:30 AM and continue until 10:16 PM. You should have enough time to catch the train.

I plan to take JR 7 days pass. My flight will reach Kansai Airport on 7th April 2018 at 9.35pm. The last Haruka train depart from Airport will be 10.16pm, I afraid I won’t be able to catch the last train as may need time to exchange JR pass after custom clearance. Is there any better choice if I miss the last Haruka train 10.16pm? I have to go Kyoto or Shin-Osaka. Thanks!

Hi Felicia!

There is an alternative to the Haruka Express: the JR Kansai Airport Line, which is a short rail line that connects Kansai International Airport with the rest of the JR West railway network in Osaka . However you will have to make sure the hours work for you by checking timetables at Hyperdia , the number 1 Japanese online transportation planning tool.

Enjoy your trip!

Can I buy ICOCA & Haruka one-way ticket from Kyoto to KIX any JR station at Osaka?

Hi Seh-Ling!

Upon your arrival in Japan, you can purchase any IC Card (such as ICOCA) from a ticket counter or an automated kiosk at any major train station.

Have a nice trip.

I’m planning to purchase ICOCA + HARUKA package to get me directly from KIX to Kyoto Sta. But I will return to the airport from Osaka Sta. How is this going to work? And I want to know, is the Haruka express ticket have to be redeemed in advance (using my ICOCA) or I just have to tap the card at the gate before I enter the Haruka platform. Please tell me step by step…

Hi Novandito!

Please make sure to check this with the company you purchase the Icoca + Haruka package, they will be able to better assist you. Please note the Icoca Card is offered by JR West and services JR trains in the regions of Hiroshima, Kyoto, Osaka, and Okayama.

Have a ncie trip!

I will most likely be in Japan in July 2018. We will fly into Tokyo on Wed, July 4th then depart for Kyoto on July 9th. We would head to Osaka on Fri, July 13th. We think we will leave Osaka for Hong Kong on July 15th or 16th. With this said, would the 7 day JR Pass be sufficient?

I read that I can ride the Narita Express and Haruku Express with a JR Pass. Would these rides be counted as part of my days in using a JR Pass? I’m sorry if it’s a silly question.

Yes – the rides you make on the Narita Express and the Haruka Express have to be included in the validity period of your Japan Rail Pass, otherwise you will have to pay for them separately.

The Japan Rail Pass validity period is calculated in days, not in hours. Therefore, if you have purchased a 7-day pass and your activation date (when you first use the pass) is the 9th of July, the exact expiration time will be midnight on July 15.

I am buying the 5-day Takayama Hokokriku Area JR Pass as I am going to visit Shirakawa. I have a few questions: A) Can I use this pass to travel on the limited haruka express train kansai airport to tennoji? B) What trains can I take to go to Shirakawa using this pass? C) Can you please also provide the directions to Nara? D) Please also advise the directions to Kyoto.

I need to go from Kansai Airport to Bentencho. can I use route below. 1. Kansai Airport to Tennoji used Haruka limited express ( 30 minute) 2. Tennoji to Bentencho used JR Kansai Airport Rapid Service for Kyobashi ( 9 minute ) without extra pay , because I will buy ICOCA & Haruka does it possible ?

Hello there,

Yes, you could do it as you say, however, the fastest way to do your itinerary would be this following: Kansai-Airport Station –> Nankai-Limited Express 4 stops to –> Shin-Imamiya Station –> walk to Shin-Imamiya Station –> take the Osaka Loop Line to –> Bentenchō Station

Hope this helps

Hi, I’ve reserved jr kansai pass and would like to take the Haruka limited express to Tennoji. Do I have to book in advance to take the limited express? Thanks

Dear JR Pass,

We are traveling to from Kansai Airport to Kyoto downtown on 17th Nov and returning from Kyoto to Kansai Airport on 21st Nov. Are there single tickets between the two places or do we have to buy a JR Pass for 5 days? thanks Ian

Yes – it is possible to purchase single tickets to access the Haruka Express. However while the use of this train generally requires both a train fare ticket and a limited express ticket, Japan Rail Pass holders are admitted free of charge.

Have an awesome trip!

Hi I will arrive in KIX morning 9am and will be taking Haruka to Kyoto directly. Are there any nearby bento shops/7-11 we can get our breakfast at KIX before boarding Haruka, also is food consumption allowed on the train? thanks.

Hi Charmaine!

We recommend you to check the official Kansai Airport’s website to see all the available shops and restaurants should you want to purchase food in advance. However please note that most trains in Japan feature an on board food service. And of course – it is permitted to eat on trains! It is a great experience to have your lunch in train’s calm enjoying the amazing views.

Hi. I just want to make a one way trip from kyoto station to kansai airport. It says that I should take Haruka express but when I try to book online, the options only ask me to collect from kansai airport. Am I just supposed to purchase at kyoto station ?

The Limited Express Haruka operated by JR West is the only rail service between Kyoto Station and Kansai International Airport. It covers the distance in about 75 minutes stopping at Osaka City’s Shin-Osaka Station and Tennoji Station on the way. This train is covered by the Japan Rail Pass. If you do not have a Japan Rail Pass you might consider getting the ICOCA card . The normal fare for the journey between Kyoto Station and Kansai Airport Station is 2850 yen. The Limited Express Haruka runs about 30 round trips between Kyoto Station and Kansai Airport Station every day, so you can purchase it at Kyoto station, since the trains are scheduled to match the demand.

Hope it helps 🙂

I plan to take Haruka express from Kansai airport to Hikone, shiga upon arrival the first day. how much is Haruka 50 Limited express Maibara? If I don’t have Japan Rail Pass, where can I buy this ticket? TQ

If you don’t travel with a Japan Rail Pass you will have to purchase the ticket in the Ticket Office at the airport.

Hi, I will travel to Japan in this coming October. My route will be KIX-KYOTO-OSAKA-KIX. What is the best way to reach directly to Kyoto? Is it by HARUKA express? And what would be the timetable for Haruka express?

2. What is the best option from KYOTO to Osaka? 3. Where is the Icoca Haruka ticket counter at KIX airport? Is it at 2F?

Hi Yong Siew Chin!

The easiest way to reach Kyoto directly from Kansai Airport is through the Haruka Express, fully included in your Japan Rail Pass. Trains depart every thirty minutes during the day and evening. From the Kansai airport, departures begin at 6:30 AM and continue until 10:16 PM. Trains run from 6:37 AM to 10:50 PM at Tennoji Station, from 6:17 AM to 9 PM at Shin-Osaka Station, and from 5:45 AM to 8:30 PM at Kyoto Station. Times may vary slightly on weekends and holidays. Once you pass through the ticket barrier at each station, you will see a timetable for the trains.

The best option to reach Osaka from Kyoto is taking the Hikari train on the Tokaido Shinkansen line. You will get between Kyoto Station and Shin-Osaka Station in less than 30 minutes. This trip is also fully included in your Japan Rail Pass.

Have a nice trip!

Hi. I will be taking this route in Jan 2018 KIX- Kyoto-Kanazawa-Shirakawago-Takayama-osaka within 7 days. Should I get the JR pass or the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Pass.

Hi Alexandra!

The Japan Rail Pass will cover trips nation-wide while regional passes only cover trips within a certain region. We recommend you to draw your itinerary to assess which pass would be more convenient for it.

hi!, I will be travelling in Japan on October, I will arrive in Osaka, and travel to kyoto my question is at what time is the last train from osaka airport to kyoto? and also can I travel with my JR Pass to Nara and tokyo?

For the exact operation hours of trains please check Hyperdia – the number 1 Japanese online transportation planning tool. It offers detailed timetables, platform information, trip duration and exact distance, which will help you greatly in organizing your trips in Japan.

Regarding your question, yes – you can travel to Nara and to Tokyo at no additional cost if you hold a Japan Rail Pass. To get to Nara from Osaka just take the Yamatoji Rapid Train from Osaka Station to JR Nara Station. To travel from Osaka to Tokyo , you will need to take either the Hikari bullet train or Kodama from Tokyo or Shinagawa stations that will get you to central Tokyo. Both run on the Tokaido Shinkansen line, connecting the two cities.

Very happy travels!

We are taking the Haruka to the airport hotel to check in and back to town for more shopping. Is there a limit on how many trips we can take the Haruka on the same day using JR pass?

Hi Jasmine!

No, there is not a limit on the amount of times you can take the Haruka Express using your Japan Rail Pass. You can make unlimited rides in any of the included transportation while the pass is still valid.

i will be traveling to Kansai-Osaka-Kyoto-Kansai by last week of september. what is the best and economical way to do this?

The most economical way of travelling will depend on your scheduled trip: generally, the more you travel, the more economical gets the Japan Rail Pass. Please note transportation in Japan is not cheap and savings can be big. To assess which is the best option we recommend you to draw all trips you want to make and compare its individual prices (you can check Hyperdia ) to the cost of the Japan Rail Pass.

All the mentioned trips are fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass as described below:

– To travel from the Kansai Airport to the city of Osaka, board the Limited Express Haruka at the Kansai Airport Station using your Japan Rail Pass. Take the Haruka to Shin-Osaka Station, a journey of about one hour. – To travel between Kyoto and Osaka take the Hikari train on the Tokaido Shinkansen line. You will get between Kyoto Station and Shin-Osaka Station in less than 30 minutes.

Is there a limit to how many times we can use the jr pass for haruka train?

There is not – while the Japan Rail Pass is still valid you can travel unlimitedly in all of the included transportation.

Enjoy Japan!

Hi, I’m taking 3 days JR west pass. Can I use this pass to go from Osaka to Kansai Airport using Haruka Express?

The Kansai Area Pass seems to include Haruka Express. However, for accurate information, please check with JR West website at http://www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/ticket/pass/ .

I bought the Takayama Hokuriku Tourist Pass( 5 days) for my trip in coming November. 1. Can I use it to travel by Limited Exp. Thunderbird from Shin Osaka Station to Kyoto? 2. Does this pass cover any local transport in Kyoto? 3. Can I use the Haruka from Kyoto back to Tennoji station. 4. Does this pass cover any local transport in Osaka? 5. Does this pass cover local transport in Kanazawa? 6. How to book seats to Shirakawa-go?

Unfortunately we don’t have much information on the Takayama Hokuriku Tourist Pass. Basically it grants unlimited rides on JR conventional lines running between Nagoya, Gero, Takayama - Toyama, and linking Kansai-airport, Osaka City area, Kyoto, Kaga-Onsen - Kanazawa, and “Hokuriku Shinkansen” running between Kanazawa and Toyama.

Please make sure to visit Tourist Pass official website for all the information of this pass.

Hi, I plan to go Shirakawa from Kansai airport, may I know is the Kansai Hokuriku area pass suitable for my plan? Thanks!

There are no train services to Shirakawa-go, but the Nohi Bus is available from Takayama. The trip lasts approximately one hour. Individual tickets can be directly during your stay in Takayama .

Top 5 airlines flying to Kyoto

The space for the seats i like it. Its not too close like other air line. The food is ok and also the staff. I'm waiting for my flight rewards point because until now i didn't recieved it.

The staff, ground and air, at ANA was very helpful and friendly during check in, boarding and during the flight. This is the reason why I always fly ANA whenever I go to Manila. The food was not the best but the flight crew more than makes up for the shortfall.

First I will say this was really NOT an ANA flight. ANA used a UNITED jet to perform this flight. I specifically booked with ANA because I did NOT WANT TO FLY UNITED FOR INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS. So to spend $1800.00 and then discover after booking that it was going to be handled by United was very disappointing. I will be more careful next time when I book. The interior was very cramped in economy class; the dinner meal was terrible and also had extremely small portions for an international flight - the bread roll was ice cold and stale - that salad was very wilted; I’ve never had a “snack” that was so salty that it was difficult to eat; the breakfast “waffle” was practically unrecognizable. Really horrible meals for a very expensive international flight. Bathroom floor was also pretty dirty. I’m hoping my return flight is a real ANA airplane that is cleaned and serviced by ANA personnel with ANA meals. I will never book with ANA again if they continue to use UNITED airline jets. Yuck!!!🤢

Ticket was purchased as a United Airlines flight (operated by All Nippon) like what does that even mean? Makes for a VERY confusing flight experience. For instance, what do I look for a United drop off signage and ticket counter or ANA? No explanation anywhere to be found. I also felt a little bit scammed by the obsurdely restrictive seat selection provided. Only middle seats available!! Are you kidding me!! On 6hr + 10hr flights you're forcing me into the middle seat without telling me before I purchased the ticket?? This should be illegal. And to top it off, on the Tokyo LA leg there were quite a few empty seats including window seats! I must also say, the food was a dissappointing as well for my taste, fish with rice ( mostly plain white rice) or a vegetable medly for the breakfast meal? Should be at least 4 choices and at least 1 with eggs. Outside of these issues flight was otherwise ok.

Ground and flight crew were all courteous, extremely helpful and professional. Overall, process is really organized, from boarding to disembarkation.

This is a very long flight and the first time I have flown on a Japanese airline. I was very impressed with the staff. They worked hard and offered food and drink regularly. Plane was very well cared for. The let room was good . Food was ok but better than other airlines.

It was very nice. I was a bit disappointed by the few meal services. There were probably more drink services that I missed while sleeping, but I would have liked the crew to bring more than one drink service before landing and to bring more than one drink service and coffee service after take off

The space and bed was very comfortable , flight attendants very nice. The food was not tasty at all. I ordered the rib eye and it was so tough I couldn’t cut it.

I wish the serve should leach and drink. Maybe because only 2hr

Seat was roomy enough . The Asian selection for a meal was good . The tortellini was not very good. Service was excellent. O

The food was not that good. I liked the miso, green tea, and ice cream. I wasn’t able to put my carry on bag under the seat in front of me. The flight was smooth. Please expand your choices of movies especially the new ones. I can’t choose any of those films. They’re old.

I like the braised beef., miso soup,, and green tea. Very little choices of hollywood movies. The PA announcement in English was not very clear and very soft. I could hardly hear.

More updated movies & Chinese movies. The food sometimes overcooked. Prefer to have more neat snacks in between than just choose from the menu. Please change the menu every now and then. This is my second time flying within one year and the menu didn’t change at all!

Food is lagging. Very poor choice. Like vending machine fast food.

Please change the menu more often. The beef is not tender, more choice in ice cream flavor. Dessert is not good too.

The Experience was fantastic, it's a quick flight so no entertainment or food. Just a refreshment

Great crew, Japanese domestic flight is just a drink service but crew are very attentive

Again I paid for an upgrade on my credit card didn’t get it need a refund. . American I not good at gettin in contact for refunds.

l enjoyed the variety of good and drink choices. The flight attendants were very quick and efficient to our needs.

-Bathrooms were regularly checked/maintained. -Food was okay, but the miso soup was good. -Top of my foot got bitten by a bug when I took off my shoes and was only wearing my socks. It was swollen and very itchy for several days.

I paid $380 for my one-way ticket from California to Minnesota. The fair did not include online check-in. I received instructions from their app to check in at a kiosk. At the kiosk, the boarding pass would not print until an actual person came to verify that I had a personal item and not a carry-on item, On the plane, the person next to me was drunk and allowed to continue to order alcohol. United is garbage I’d rather fly spirit.

The plane was dirty and the in seat air wasn't blowing as planes usually do.

Generally good but there wasn’t any staff available when my luggage didn’t appear at baggage claim in Fresno. It took about half an hour to locate a staff member to open up the locked room where it was being kept.

Do not like the feeling of being in the basic economy. Everyone should feel good no matter what.

All flights were on time and boarding was issue free

Terrible! The plane was old and you are required to connect your own device to their Wi-Fi rather than have entertainment options in the back of the seat in front of you. The Wi-Fi went out during the flight and there was only one plug for the devices every two seats. Three out of five surrounding my family did not work. The seats and spaces under them were so small I could not fit my backpack, which I’ve always brought on flights and fit before no problem. The crew were unpleasant and patronizing.

Great! The plane was decently sized and comfortable. The staff was nice and there was great in flight entertainment

Food was terrible Not many options Stewards dont care Delay

Water service would be great. The way they board is terrible. Slow passengers first😂😂 They need to smart up a bit

Our original business class flight was cancelled so we not only downgraded but we were also spread out across the plane not sitting together in separate middle seats. My poor kids were scared and couldn’t see me on the flight and the crew wasn’t sensitive to the situation and what the airlines did to us. Very dissatisfied with United airlines.

All four American Airlines flights I took in last seven days were delayed. Caused me loads of problems, missed meetings, loss of time and money.

American cancelled our flight home. Zero option for hotel, alternative transportation and took 3 hours to find our bags so we could take a 3 hour UBER ride home on our dime. Never flying AA again.

They gave my seat away although it was a connecting flight with them and the flight was a bit delayed.

Flight was cancelled had to move to another gate late again no internet paid for the month and never can use it waste of money

Not being able to purchase my check in baggage online was a negative.

LATE LATE LATE!!! Plagued by late AA flights on this trip. Such a drag. This one was by far the worst.

WiFi connected but only let you go to the AA website, not even text messaging worked.

Too bad that first class seats do not recline significantly causing discomfort

I think the seats on some of their planes are uncomfortable. You can be ok on a short flight of two hours but no more than that. The delays, and also the refreshments on the plane were not enough.

Flight delayed over an over all day until it cancelled at 1:30am. Would not repeatedly delay that late. Offer hotel rooms and rebook early. Very difficult for families with small children

All was good, except our baggage was lost for most of a day. We are thankful that it was found quickly and delivered to our hotel. Rouge was fine outside of that problem.

You do not have a space for flight cancelled. BUT!!! Air Canada handled it great. Was booked on another airline for the next day. The original flight was booked solid. But he precheck by the maintenance found a mechanical problem and the plane was not safe to fly. It was an inconvenience to have to wait until next day but I would rather arrive safely.

Very good other than we have to wait for one crew and we’re delayed and the pilot and his co- pilot has to make a difference to be right on time arrival. Disappointed about no food service also.

I had written all my complaints on my trip from Grand Junction to Denver so I will repeat it here! I was absolutely appalled that I had to pay for a regular seat that I choose 24 hrs before boarding! Also I checked my large bag which I had to pay for as well, and by the time I boarded all the room in the bins were gone so also had to check that one. I noticed people pulling out oversized suitcases, bigger than the measurements stated for carry on, and also large pack packs stuffed full! So these people were taking up 2 or 3 spaces that the rest of us should have been able to use but couldn’t! NoTV on the flight! Thankfully I had downloaded the United Airlines app and was able to watch movies on my phone. Don’t remember the last time I flew in a plane with no movie screens!

I was appalled to have to pay for just a regular seat when I went to book 24 hrs before my flight! Because it was only an hour flight I didn’t choose a seat from Grand Junction to Denver, but I did for Toronto and had to pay just to choose a regular available seat! In my 60+ years of flying this was the first time I have heard of this. Also, allowing people to bring on “huge “ suitcases, not carry on size, but much bigger, and then a large pack pack stuffed. So they take up all the room in the overhead bins and if we are later boarding, there is no room so we have to check our small carry on. I have already paid for and checked in one bag! I certainly will not choose to fly with United again unless it is the “only” airline available!

Easy boarding, roomy seats, plenty of good food, very helpful snd friendly staff. Very smooth flight! Only thing that could have been better was to have cranberry juice. Women like this as it helps avoid UTI’s and not as sweet as other juices.

The crew was friendly, the seats are too small. Air travel is barely tolerable anymore.

Food was icecold or frozen including breakfast. Hopeless service. Rude crew.

The flight was very uncomfortable and there was no snacks served for the 13 hours international flight. In addition, the flight was delayed 3 hours

Due to a strike taking place with the airline, it negatively impacted my flight in multiple ways. My flight was delayed over 2 hours and the food served was mediocre at best.

Trip within a Trip: Osaka and Kyoto, Japan

Laura Motta

May 1, 2024 • 9 min read

travel kix to kyoto

Make your next trip to Japan even better by adding on four days in exciting Osaka (pictured) and Kyoto © EarnestTse / Shutterstock

Senior Director of Content Laura Motta recently spent 10 days in Japan . To make the most of her time in the country, she included a four-day mini-excursion to Osaka and Kyoto – a trip within a trip, if you will, which anyone can replicate.

Everyone goes to Tokyo , and I would never tell you to skip it. But another critical part of any Japan itinerary is that magical Shinkansen (bullet train) ride south to Osaka , and the astounding sites that await beyond. A mind-boggling pair of cities – Osaka and Kyoto – are crammed with more shrines and temples, steel-and-glass skyscraper malls, scenic vistas and world-class restaurants than you can experience in a month, never mind in just a few days. This was my third trip to Japan and my second time visiting Osaka and Kyoto.

Before I get to my recommendations, here are a few practical tips:

  • When to arrive: Arriving in Osaka around midday lets you drop your bags at the hotel, rest and then hit Dōtonbori in the evening, when its famous neon lights are ablaze.
  • Getting there from the airport: The spotless, inexpensive airport limousine bus from Kansai Airport makes eight stops in Osaka, which include all of its main train stations.
  • Getting around: Japan is world-famous for the ease and comprehensiveness of its public transit for a reason. You can – and certainly should – do this route without a car. High-speed (more expensive/faster) and local (less expensive/slower) trains cover every inch of this region and will shuttle you quickly between Kyoto and Osaka. Both cities have easy-to-use subway systems.
  • What to pack: Certainly, your walking shoes and room in your stomach for a lot of ramen. Keep in mind that Japan has four distinct seasons and temperatures vary significantly between them. Check the weather ahead of time – and pack accordingly.
  • How to structure your days: It’s tempting to cram your schedule when there are so many things to see. Yet realistically, you won’t be able to do more than two major sites – maybe three, if you’re really going for it – in a single day. This is especially true in Kyoto, where the best sites are far apart and can require up to an hour of travel to reach.
  • Take it easy:  Don’t forget to eat, hydrate, rest and wander. And tell yourself you’ll be back.

The Glico Man illuminated billboard in Dōtonbori district, Osaka, Japan

Day 1: Osaka

Snack time .

You’ve been traveling all morning. It’s time to eat. (Unless, of course, you stuffed yourself en route on the amazing bento boxes you can get at Tokyo Station.) Keep it simple like I did and grab onigiri (rice balls) or a  sando  at 7-Eleven. There’s one on every corner, you’ll only spend a few dollars, and buying local snacks – especially in Japan – is among travel’s greatest joys.

See the neon

If you’re in Osaka, go see the Glico man. It's a rule. Or maybe it's just mine. This famous animated sign of a runner, arms raised, about to cross the finish line in some hypothetical marathon in the sky, remains delightful despite the tourist crush on the streets below. This ad for the Glico candy company (candy bars give you energy – get it?) has become an informal mascot of Dotonbori , Osaka’s dining and nightlife district. After dark, it’s fun to wander here through the area’s many arcades, claw-machine and pachinko parlors, and shops. If you start here on a weeknight, it’s delightfully quiet.

Insider tip: Arrive before sunset and duck into a tiny side street to Hōzen-ji , a small temple known for its moss-covered statues. I was there when they were lighting the lanterns for the evening – a dreamy experience indeed.

Have a cheap and cheerful dinner

Dontonbori is teeming with restaurants. You can’t miss the distinctive signage advertising takoyaki (grilled octopus balls), gyoza and crab. My favorite takoyaki stand, Takoyaki Yoriabunzemon, is humble compared to its bombastic neighbors; there is no 5ft marquee. Inside, you’ll sit on a well-worn barstool while the single cook pours takoyaki batter into the famous round molds and serves it to you still piping hot, and slathered in mayo, barbecue sauce and bonito flakes. A warning: if you value the skin on the roof of your mouth, do not eat too fast here.

Day 2: Kyoto

Bullet train .

The Shinkansen train between Osaka and Kyoto is cheap and lightning fast. This trip is included in many Japanese rail passes , but if you’re paying for a standalone ticket, you’ll pay 1420 yen (about US$10). The trip takes 15 minutes, so slower local trains hardly seem worth the mildly cheaper price. Arrive midday and head to your hotel to check in and drop your luggage. Before you depart, don’t forget to look around Kyoto Station for the eki  ink stamp, which you can imprint into a notebook as a souvenir. Every train station in Japan has a uniquely designed stamp, even if you sometimes have to ask the attendant at smaller stations where to find it.

Stay in style

If there’s one place to splurge on a fabulous hotel in Japan, it’s in Kyoto. Whether you’re strolling under vibrant fall leaves or spring cherry blossoms, or wandering the narrow alleys and stepped streets of the Gion district , Kyoto is romantic, its temples and shrines otherworldly. My choice was Hotel the Mitsui Kyoto , a new luxury property that blends smart contemporary design with traditional Japanese accents. Beside its excellent restaurant – more on that below – the highlight is the hotel's updated approach to the traditional onsen . This vast, moodily lit indoor space offers heated pools and loungers amid beautiful rock formations and water features. And unlike many onsen experiences, this one is a bathing-suits-required, mixed-gender space where everyone can hang out. There is also no surcharge for entry.

Visit the temples

My boyfriend cheekily refers to Fushimi Inari Taisha , Kyoto’s famous shrine with its rows and rows of vermillion gates ascending a dramatic hillside, as “the Instagram shrine.” It’s hard to say that he’s wrong: the site is a favorite among foreign travelers for good reason. The gates are simply gorgeous and – yes – photogenic. Just don’t expect to find yourself there alone.

Insider tip: Afterward, stop at the charming Vermillion Cafe for a sweet snack and coffee. Sit on the back porch, which overlooks a lovely stretch of forest, for especially serene vibes (spectacular in autumn).

If you still have energy left in the afternoon, head to Nishi Hongan-ji , a mammoth Buddhist temple complex that’s home to some of the largest wooden structures in Japan. After you marvel at the huge lanterns and expansive halls, stop by the brightly painted Chinese Gate, which dates back to the late 1500s. This temple is also within walking distance of Kyoto Station, and can be a good place to start or end your trip.

Gold exterior of the Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan

Day 3: Kyoto

Go for the gold.

Kinkaku-Ji , sometimes called the Golden Pavilion, is among Kyoto’s (and Japan’s) most famous and photographed landmarks. This UNESCO World Heritage site , where a brilliant gold temple appears to float along the shores of a serene lake, is well worth braving the crowds for, especially in sunny weather when the reflection of the lake glints off of the temple’s exterior walls. Go early, packing your patience – and you’ll understand instantly why so many people flock here.

The exterior of School Bus Cafe, Kyoto, Japan

School Bus Coffee Stop is a charming spot for an easy, affordable breakfast or lunch in cozy, industrial-farmhouse-style surroundings. Comforting selections like bagel sandwiches and avocado toast are accompanied by the shop’s excellent, house-roasted coffee.

Modern love

For an aesthetic palate cleanser after a quick lunch, stop by the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art , which houses rotating exhibits, often of contemporary and modern art, in a fantastic brick structure that dates to the 1930s.

Taste sensation

And you’d be remiss if you stayed at the Mitsui without eating at its elegantly flamboyant Italian restaurant, Forni . Yes, there are pizzas and pastas on its à la carte menu. But I’d highly recommend the tasting dinner, where impeccably composed dishes like sea bream citrus tartare and grilled wagyu arrive on geometric plates and stands. It’s a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach.

Day 4: Osaka

Smart hotel.

After going luxe in Kyoto on meals and lodging, I came back to Osaka looking to save money without sacrificing too much comfort. I wasn’t ready to sleep in a sarcophagus-sized pod or get every meal at 7-Eleven. (Well, not every meal – just a few.) After getting off the train from Kyoto at the massive Shin-Osaka Station, I took the easy-to-use metro to one of the best places I’ve stayed in Japan, the chicly designed, austere-but-comfortable  Hotel Noum , just across the river from Temmabashi Station. The location made transportation connections easy and kept me sheltered from the stark urban rush of Umeda, Osaka’s high-rise business district. Rooms are small, comfortable and spotless; mine had a river view. The hotel also has an airy coffee shop in its lobby that attracts as many locals as travelers. I popped in here for a breakfast pastry and a latte and was ready to start the day.

Window(less) shopping

Even if you don’t stay in Umeda, visiting the neighborhood is a must. Spend a day wandering its cavernous, endless indoor shopping malls and underground food courts. You may never see daylight, but you will find everything from Hermès bags to the best 300-yen (US$2) gyoza you’ve ever tasted. I like to check in on the enormous red whale, which hangs suspended from the atrium of the Hep Five department store, which also happens to have a ferris wheel on its roof.

People on the sidewalk in the busy neighborhood of Umeda, Osaka, Japan

Enjoy a messy lunch

Train stations are where you’ll find some of the best food in Japan – and Osaka’s sprawling Umeda Station is no exception. My favorite train-station ramen is at Menya Takei, located behind the entry gates for the Hankyu Railway. Menya Takei specializes in tsukemen , in which the ramen noodles and broth are served separately. Dip the noodles into the broth to eat – yes, you’ll undoubtedly get it all over your clothes, but that’s part of the fun. Lots of laundry to do when you return home is a sure sign of a great trip.

Insider tip : Ask the gate agent to let you through. They’ll make you pay for a rail ticket on the way in, and then may refund you on the way out.

From Osaka, hop back onboard the Shinkansen for more exploring in Japan, or do what I did and catch a quick, affordable domestic flight to Tokyo’s Haneda airport to connect to your flight home.

This airport says it hasn’t lost a single piece of baggage in 30 years

W hile Singapore and Doha’s airports compete against each other for the title of “ world’s best ,” another aviation hub is focusing on a different achievement. Japan’s Kansai International Airport (KIX) is marking 30 years without losing a single piece of luggage.

In a press statement, Japan’s seventh busiest airport said that it had not lost any passenger bags since opening in September 1994. The airport averages 20-30 million passengers per year.

While airline passengers are probably happy to know their luggage will arrive at their destination with them, there’s one group of people who aren’t making a big deal out of the achievement: airport staff.

“We don’t feel like we have been doing something special,” Kenji Takanishi, a public relations officer for Kansai, told CNN.

“We have been working as we normally do. We only do our work on a daily basis and we are recognized for it. We are certainly happy to receive the award. I think our staff, especially those working on the ground, feel more pleased.”

Skytrax, a UK-based aviation ranking and rating website, recognized Kansai as having the world’s best airport baggage delivery in awards given out in April.

It’s worth noting that according to the airport, their baggage handlers and ground staff have never lost a bag. But if one did get lost on the way to or from KIX, it could be the fault of the individual airline, not the airport itself.

Kansai, built on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, serves the Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe regions. For 2024, Kansai was ranked the 18th best airport in the world overall, behind its neighbors in Tokyo, Narita (fifth place) and Haneda (fourth).

Timely baggage arrival is just one of the factors looked at when naming a “world’s best” airport. Food and drink offerings, percentage of on-time arrivals and departures, and cleanliness are also considered.

Currently, Kansai is going through upgrading efforts to get ready for Expo 2025 (formerly known as the World’s Fair), which will take place in Osaka.
