Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, occurs, especially in major cities. Theft generally occurs in the following places:

  • hotel rooms
  • tourist sites
  • recreational areas
  • unattended vehicles

Make sure that your belongings, including your passport, are secure at all times.

There is a threat of terrorism. Far-right domestic terrorists have carried out attacks in New Zealand, the most recent being the 2019 shootings in Christchurch at two mosques.

Always be aware of your surroundings when in public places. Terrorist attacks could occur at any time. Targets could include:

  • government buildings, including schools
  • places of worship
  • airports and other transportation hubs and networks
  • public areas such as tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, hotels and other sites frequented by foreigners

The Government of New Zealand maintains a public alert system on terrorism and communicates threat level changes online and through social media.

When using debit or credit cards:

  • pay careful attention if other people are handling your cards
  • use ATMs located in public areas or inside a bank or business
  • avoid using card readers with an irregular or unusual feature
  • cover the keypad with one hand when entering your PIN

Demonstrations

Demonstrations may occur. Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time. They can also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transportation.

  • Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities
  • Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

Adventure tourism

Adventure tourism, such as zip-lining, rock climbing or trekking, can be dangerous, especially if they are not well-organized. Trails are not always marked and weather conditions can change rapidly, even in summer.

Serious accidents have occurred in New Zealand and some activity operators have been accused of negligence.

Tour operators may not meet international standards.

If you are participating in adventure tourism, such as zip-lining, rock climbing, trekking, hiking, parasailing:

  • obtain detailed information on the activity before setting out
  • never do so alone and always hire an experienced guide from a reputable company
  • make sure your travel insurance covers the recreational activities you choose
  • make sure your physical condition is good enough to meet the challenges of your activity
  • make sure you’re well-equipped and informed about weather and other hazardous conditions
  • consider purchasing or renting a distress or personal locator beacon (PLB)
  • tell a family member or friend about your itinerary, including when you expect to be back
  • know the symptoms of acute altitude sickness, which can be fatal
  • don’t venture off marked trails
  • don’t use the facilities or equipment if you have doubts about their safety

Remote areas

Some regions in New Zealand are very isolated and have small populations. Services may be scarce.

You may have difficulty getting adequate mobile phone coverage if you travel in a remote area by car.

  • Avoid travelling alone
  • Inform relatives of your itinerary
  • Check with local authorities before travelling if alerts have been issued for your destination

Water activities

Coastal waters can be dangerous. Riptides are common and can be dangerous. Several drownings occur each year.

In certain areas, sharks, seals and other wildlife pose a risk to swimmers.

  • Avoid unsupervised beaches
  • Follow the instructions and warnings of lifeguards
  • Respect the flag warning system, which provides notice of water conditions and safety risks on beaches

Diving and snorkelling

Ensure that your aquatic equipment is safe and in good condition.

Road travel

Road conditions and road safety are very good throughout the country.

Road conditions

Roads can be narrow, curvy and cover hilly terrain. Mountain roads, including those leading to ski hills, may be unpaved and without safety barriers.

Weather conditions can change quickly, particularly during winter. Snow, ice, fog, rain and strong winds can lead to dangerous driving conditions.

Landslides caused by heavy rain can block or wash away roads.

Road safety

Railway crossings may not have barriers, and bells may ring only during daylight hours, especially in rural areas.  Drinking and driving is common. Many road fatalities involve alcohol or drug use. Drivers often drive at excessive speeds.

Roaming animals in rural areas may pose further hazard. Dairy herds often cross main roads at milking time.

Pedestrians should use caution when crossing streets and be mindful that traffic is coming from the opposite direction than what they may be used to.

About Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres in Canada

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.

 The flu occurs worldwide.

  •  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
  •  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
  •  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round.

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

In this destination, rabies  may be present in some wildlife species, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal.

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional.

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who will be working directly with wildlife.

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

  • Learn more about food and water precautions to take to avoid getting sick by visiting our eat and drink safely abroad page. Remember: Boil it, cook it, peel it, or leave it!
  • Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
  • Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs.

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

  • Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
  • Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
  • Minimize exposure to insects
  • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

To learn more about how you can reduce your risk of infection and disease caused by bites, both at home and abroad, visit our insect bite prevention page.

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

  •   washing your hands often
  • avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
  • avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.

Medical services and facilities

Health care is good and available throughout the country.

If you are injured in a work or a car accident, you may receive treatment at a public hospital.

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Health and safety outside Canada

Some prescription medication may be illegal in New Zealand.

If you take prescription medication, you’re responsible for determining their legality in the country.

  • Bring sufficient quantities of your medication with you
  • Always keep your medication in the original container
  • Pack your medication in your carry-on luggage
  • Carry a copy of your prescriptions

Keep in Mind...

The decision to travel is the sole responsibility of the traveller. The traveller is also responsible for his or her own personal safety.

Be prepared. Do not expect medical services to be the same as in Canada. Pack a   travel health kit , especially if you will be travelling away from major city centres.

You must abide by local laws.

Canadian eTA for New Zealand Citizens

Citizens of New Zealand travelling to Canada should check the travel documentation they require before departure to avoid any problems on arrival. In most cases, they will need a Canada eTA for New Zealanders.

On this page, you can find out the requirements to apply for a Canada electronic travel authorization online , difference between an eTA and a Canada visa for citizens of New Zealand.

What do New Zealanders require to enter Canada?

You will need your valid New Zealand passport and a travel permit (visa or visa waiver) to enter Canada.

There are 50 countries which are exempt from Canadian visa requirements , including New Zealand. This means New Zealand citizens do not need a visa to visit Canada.

However, they are required to have an approved Canada eTA for New Zealanders if arriving by air and plan to stay up to 6 months.

For stays longer than 6 months , it will be necessary to obtain a Canada visa for NZ citizens from a Canadian embassy or consulate in New Zealand in advance of travel.

How does the Canada eTA for New Zealanders work?

The Canada eTA for New Zealanders is a multiple-entry electronic travel authorization.

The eTA was introduced in 2015 by Canadian immigration to make it easier to screen foreign visitors to Canada before they enter the country.

The system has allowed border officials to efficiently assess travellers arriving in the country and cut down on the number of repeat visitors who need paperwork.

New Zealanders with an approved eTA are permitted to enter Canada multiple times within the five-year validity of the ETA . They can be granted a stay of up to 6 months for each trip.

Border officials will decide on arrival in Canada how long the travel authorization will last and record the date in the traveller's New Zealand passport.

How can New Zealanders get the Canada eTA?

Confirmation of your approved Canada eTA will be delivered by email.

The Canada eTA application system is designed to be quick and easy for visitors from New Zealand to use.

You can complete the short online form using any desktop, tablet or mobile device . Once approved, the authorization is delivered safely and electronically to the NZ applicant's email address.

New Zealanders only need to meet a few basic Canadian eTA requirements to get the digital visa waiver.

When to register for the Canada eTA for New Zealanders

It is advisable to apply for an eTA for New Zealand citizens at least 72 hours before travel .

Canada eTA for Citizens of New Zealand

eTA Canada from New Zelanad

New Zealand passport holders are eligible to visit Canada without needing a traditional visa . To do so, they must apply for the Canadian Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) online .

The Canadian government introduced this online visa waiver for citizens of selected countries (including New Zealand) in 2015 to facilitate international visits. It grants entry for tourism, business, or transit .

It is necessary to meet a few basic Canada eTA requirements for citizens of New Zealand.

What Is the Canada eTA for New Zealanders?

The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) for Canada is an online visa waiver . Nationals of New Zealand can use it to visit the country instead of going to the trouble of getting a Canadian visa.

Travelers can apply for the Canada eTA for New Zealanders from the comfort of their own home or office. They simply need to fill in a quick online form using a computer or device connected to the internet. There is no need to go all the way to an embassy to deal with paperwork.

The application takes a matter of minutes. Confirmation of the approved Canadian eTA for citizens of New Zealand is delivered by email — usually within 24 hours and often much sooner.

This online travel permit is electronically linked to the New Zealand passport registered in the application.

The Canadian eTA is valid for 5 years . If the registered New Zealand passport expires sooner than this, the eTA will expire along with the passport. New Zealanders are allowed multiple entries in Canada during the validity period, with a maximum stay of 6 months each time.

  • Electronic New Zealand passport
  • Current email address
  • Debit or credit card to pay the processing fee

New Zealanders must confirm they possess an electronic passport (also referred to as a biometric passport). It must be valid for the duration of their stay in Canada. The biometric passport is a secure travel document that facilitates arrival in the country with quicker queues at border control.

New Zealanders must fill in the simple Canadian eTA application form . This is a questionnaire that asks for the basic information detailed below and usually takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete.

Do New Zealand Minors Need the eTA for Canada?

Yes, underage travelers from New Zealand also require an Electronic Travel Authorization to enter Canada. Their parents or legal guardians are authorized to submit their application on their behalf and use a joint email address for registration.

Payment of the Canadian eTA by New Zealand Applicants

Once New Zealand nationals have answered all the questions on the eTA application form, they finalize their request with the eTA processing fee payment . The Canadian government recommends all travelers thoroughly review their answers before actioning payment, since once completed, the answers on the eTA request cannot be amended.

How Long Does It Take to Receive a Canada eTA for New Zealanders?

The Canadian government evaluates all the eTA applications received and usually replies within 24 hours . Many applicants receive confirmation almost immediately.

Occasionally, it may take a little longer. During busy tourist seasons, the evaluation process could last up to 3 days. The Canadian authorities advise New Zealanders to apply at least 72 hours before their intended departure to account for any delays or evaluation issues.

Approved Canada eTAs are electronically linked to the traveler’s New Zealand’ passport and a confirmation email is sent to the account provided.

Traveling to Canada With the eTA From New Zealand

New Zealanders are authorized to depart for Canada once they receive their approved eTA. They must note that since the eTA is electronically linked to their passport, they are not obliged to print out a copy .

Travelers must ensure they travel to Canada with the same passport they used during their application process. This is especially important for New Zealanders with dual nationality and more than one passport.

If the original passport was misplaced or stolen between the moment the eTA was issued and the travel dates, you must apply for a new eTA, registering it to your new passport.

Travelers from New Zealand must simply submit their passports at the departure gates before boarding their flights. Once they reach Canada, their passports will be digitally scanned at border control before entering the country.

It is imperative to have an eTA granted before departing since airline staff will not allow New Zealand travelers to board their flights without it.

Canadian eTA Extension for Visitors from New Zealand

If New Zealanders wish to prolong their stay in Canada, they can apply for an extension of their eTA . The Canadian authorities require them to hand in an application 30 days before their current eTA expires. They usually expedite the eTA extensions in 24 hours.

Canadian Embassy in New Zealand

Those who hold a New Zealand passport are eligible to apply for the Canadian eTA online. Thanks to this convenient and straightforward process, there is no need to visit an embassy or a consulate.

If the New Zealand citizen is planning to travel to Canada for other reasons, such as relocating, finding employment, or studying, they are encouraged to contact the High Commission of Canada in New Zealand for further information.

How long can I stay in Canada as a visitor?

Help Centre what do you need help with?

Most visitors can stay for up to 6 months in Canada.

If you’re allowed to enter Canada, the border services officer may allow you to stay for less or more than 6 months.

  • If so, they’ll put the date you need to leave by in your passport. They might also give you a document.
  • If you don’t get a stamp in your passport, you can stay for 6 months from the day you entered Canada or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
  • If you need a stamp, you can ask a border services officer for one. If you arrive at an airport that uses primary inspection kiosks , ask the border services officer after you finish at the kiosk.

If you want to stay longer than your authorized stay, you should apply for an extension at least 30 days before the authorized end of your stay.

New entry requirement now in effect

Visa-exempt foreign nationals need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly to or transit through Canada by air. Exceptions include U.S. citizens and travellers with a valid Canadian visa. Canadian citizens, including dual citizens , and Canadian permanent residents cannot apply for an eTA.

After you take care of the requirements, the next step implies that you fill in an application form . You should spend about 10 minutes on it, and in case of assistance at any point, know that our customer service is available 24/7.

iVisa created a 3-step application form so that you have an easy time going through it:

The first step only asks for general information and for you to select a procedure time . As for that, keep in mind that the choice you make affects the timeframe in which your Canada ETA is ready, as well as its price. Here are the options you have at hand:

Standard – this type of process has a low cost but it takes 6 days to acquire your ETA and the quantity that you need to pay is USD $102.49 for your ETA.

Rush – selecting this process, your Canada ETA will be concluded in 4 days . The price is USD $136.49 .

Super Rush – this is the best choice for you in case of an emergency. it will cost USD $199.49 and your authorization document will be ready in 3 days .

Secondly, pay and reread your form with care so that you can make sure it does not contain any errors. Note that even if it is a minimal mistake, your ETA can be denied and you will have to request a new one.

Step three wants you to provide iVisa with the necessary documents . After you have finished, submit your form and iVisa will handle it from there.

The bottom line is that as a citizen of New Zealand, you only need a Canada ETA when you travel to Canada for short visits.

The ETA has a validity for 5 years after issued or until passport expires , with Multiple entry . However, your stay is limited to 180 days per entry .
