We’ve talked about why and how you should do a site visit before. Even though you know a site visit is of great importance in assuring you the quality and the consistency of your future products, you may still find it hard to put it to effective use. This is all the more true if you or your team have limited experience in conducting site visits or plant tours.

For some, especially those who are looking for overseas suppliers, site visits are both time and money consuming. Especially when you don’t have a local team to help you with that.

So what can you do to ensure an effective site visit? How can you maximize the effectiveness of the plant tours?

We’ve broken the whole site visit into the following 3 parts, so you’ll have a better idea of what to do in each phase of the site visit so as to make it effective as you hope.

Before the visit

Before going straight forward to the supplier, there are things that you can do to save time for the both parties. Such preparations are of utmost important in that they set the tone for the rest of the tasks that follow.

Prioritize your goals for the site visit

First, you need to know for sure why you want to do the site visit, what accomplishments you want to achieve, who do you think you should talk to if you want to get the problem solved.

Without knowing where to focus the time and effort, it’s almost unlikely that you will see a promising outcome for the site visit.

The last thing you want to do is to make the site visit just a day tour to the factory, only to discover that the site visit is but a tiring and non-effective waste of time.

Gather the right resources

Once you’ve set the goals for your site visit, it shouldn’t be hard for you to gather the right resources to actually going to the site.

For example, you should include a quality engineer in your site visit team if one of your priorities is product quality. And you should definitely include a sourcing professional if you want to make sure the product price is not off the chart.

It is, of course, very natural for you to include as many people who have site visiting experience as you can. Do a joint preparation

In this way, you won’t have to explain to your supplier what exactly are you looking for at the site and waste the precious visiting time. And your supplier can prepare the required information such as data, numbers, figures when you ask for it at the site.

In addition, you can settle down on the detail schedule for the visit and propose changes to items that are of little importance to your visit goals.

During the visit

When the visit ends, it’s crucial that you summarize the visit into a form of report and then send feedback to your potential supplier.

On the one hand, the site visit report is a good way to tell how well you and your team have achieved the goals you set before the visit. In addition, the report provides an objective insight of whether the visited supplier is a good fit for your product.

On the other hand, your potential supplier could use the feedback to improve their expertise and capabilities. Even though the supplier won’t be your choice at the end, it’s still good for your business to maintain a nice, friendly relationship with more potential suppliers.

Hotel site inspection: 10 tips to ensure a successful hotel site tour.

In most cases, a group that wants to book a meeting, a wedding or a reunion will select the hotel based on photos and reviews online. This, however, can be disastrous since either can be misleading when compared to the actual condition of the hotel.

In addition, without a site tour, you don’t get to see all the intangibles that can’t be viewed online. For example, how pleasant is the front desk? How well staffed is the place? How clean are the public bathrooms?

No matter what kind of group travel you’re planning, a hotel site tour is an essential aspect that should not be left out.

 Here are 10 tips for when you’re on a hotel site inspection

Go Unannounced Schedule a site tour with the hotel you are considering but don’t let them know that you’ll be staying the night before if you want to see the hotel exactly how your attendees will see it when they arrive. Get to the hotel early and check in to see the how attentive the front desk really is. Things to look for are room cleanliness, staff attire, public areas, and service.  Where is the GM Did the GM accompany you on the site tour? While most site inspections are conducted by sales managers, there are some GM’s that get very involved in sales and are happy to accompany you on a site tour. And if they aren’t at the site inspection, they will stop in to say hello and to answer any questions.

After all, you may be bringing a significant portion of business to the hotel, and his involvement from the very beginning is critical in ensuring a successful event. If the GM of the hotel you are considering seems very involved, it would seem to reason that he/she is taking ownership of the property and will take care of your group during the actual event.

 Eagerness Try to determine how eager the hotel is for your business. When you are there on the day of the site inspection, go straight to the front desk to ask where the sales office is (even if you know where it is). Doing so will give you an idea of whether the front desk was made aware that you were coming for a site tour. If the answer to your question is “Oh, are you here for the site tour?”, then you know the hotel is eager to have your business and even the line level employees are aware that you’re coming.

Eagerness can be seen in other employees as well. Does the salesperson seem excited that you are there? Does the GM come and greet you to see if everything on the site inspection went ok?

 Ask to see a room type not on the list Every hotel has what is called “Show rooms”. These rooms are not sold to the general public (unless they are sold out), and are kept in pristine condition just for site tours. On your inspection, you are bound to see just the show rooms. To see actual rooms that are sold to guests, ask to see a room type that you weren’t shown. For example, you can say “Can I see a handicap accessible room please?” Now you’re going to get to see a real room that your attendees will see at arrival.

 Uniformity Are the employees in uniform? If so, are they clean and well kept? It seems like a silly question but it says a lot about how much the hotel cares about its appearance. A hotel that does not enforce a uniform or has shabby looking ones is either not run very well, or is doing poorly from a financial perspective. Neither of those reasons bode well for your group.

 Longevity During regular conversation, consider asking every manager how long they have been there. If most of the answers are in the less than 2 years camp, the implication is that the employer is not good enough to hold onto their people. The importance here is that the event you are planning is anywhere from a few months to a year or so away. High turnover in management means more uncertainty for your group in terms of service and experience.

 Look Up Ceiling tiles can tell you a lot about how caring a hotel staff really is. A few dirty or stained ceiling tiles in the hallways is normal. But if you see one after another in every hallway, then that is a pattern of neglect by the maintenance department. The obvious question is “If they don’t care enough to change something as simple as ceiling tiles, how much will they care about my business?”.

 Trash In the parking lot Before you enter the hotel for the site inspection, consider walking the parking lot all the way around. Is it clean with a few pieces of trash lying around? Or can you see trash in the bushes or all around the curbs? If the parking lot is dirty, it is another signal data point that you can use when deciding on a hotel for your group.

 Make them uncomfortable Nobody wants to talk about the negative stuff, and yet it is important to clarify everything. Before going on the hotel site inspection, you should have already seen the reviews online. Consider taking some of the bad reviews on sites like Tripadvisor and asking hotel management about it.

Bring up the negative reviews to see if the management takes ownership of the problems or just skirts the issue by making excuses for every one of them. A hotel staff that accepts responsibility by saying something like “Hey, we are not perfect, and in this case, we messed up. However, we learned from it and are better off now” is the kind of people you want to be doing business with.

 Cleanliness of public areas During your site inspection, pay particular attention to the cleanliness of the hallways, the lobby, and the elevator. Is there a houseman cleaning the main public areas during your site tour? Is the staff picking up trash as they walk by it or do they choose to ignore it?

A well run hotel will not have any trash lying around in public areas since they make it every employee’s responsibility to pick it up.

Ask lots of questions This seems kind of obvious but it needs to be said. There is no way to predict what you may encounter during your site inspection so make sure you ask any question that pops up in during the site tour. It is important that you remove any doubts about the hotel before you leave as it will help you make a more informed decision. So remember not to be shy about asking any questions, regardless of how dumb they may sound.

The tips above will help ensure that you are prepared with what to look for in your next site tour. However, there are additional details that you should not look over depending on the type of group event you are planning. After all, a site tour for a wedding room block will be very different than one for a corporate meeting.

You can say "my first tour to the U.S.", but it is much more common to say "my first tour of the U.S." We always say that we take a trip to somewhere, and we usually say we take a tour of somewhere.

The idiom is "take a tour of." In oher words, it would be the more acceptable way of saying that you are going on a tour. In fact, I am going to take a tour to Canada incorrectly indicates that you are merely travelling to Canada.

Some of the confusion might begin at the travel agent's desk, where you can "book a tour to Spain." The "tour" won't cover all of Spain, of course... just those cities listed for that particular tour. So you might have a choice of five tours to Spain.

“From the air I saw a bridge that’s been ripped apart. Here on the ground, I see a community that’s been pulled together,” Biden said on the banks of the Patapsco River as the sun broke through the overcast sky to illuminate the crash site in the distance behind him.

Wearing a jacket and baseball cap in the whipping wind, Biden committed to moving “heaven and earth to rebuild this bridge as rapidly as humanly possible.” He reiterated his pledge for the federal government to pay for the entire response — a process that began last week with quick access to federal emergency relief funds and the drafting of legislation to cover the rest.

The Democratic president’s visit came a little over a week after a 984-foot shipping vessel hit the Key Bridge, sending it tumbling into the river and killing six construction workers who were filling potholes in the middle of the night. Biden said Friday he was grieving for the families of those men.

“It’s not the same but I know a little bit about what it’s like to lose a piece of your soul,” said Biden, whose wife and daughter were killed when he was a young senator, and whose son died of cancer in 2015. “You get that phone call in the middle of night saying family members are gone. I’ve been there. It’s feeling like having a black hole in your chest. Like you’re being sucked in unable to breathe. The anger, pain, the depth of loss is so profound.”

Before his remarks outside, Biden toured the site from Marine One with Gov. Wes Moore , who traveled on the president’s helicopter from the White House. The pair then received a briefing at the Maryland Transportation Authority Police Headquarters, where they heard directly about efforts to clear the channel and restore both shipping traffic in the Port of Baltimore and road transportation.

Biden listened quietly and asked a handful of questions before greeting first responders during the roughly 15-minute information session. Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers leaders walked Biden through what’s been happening in the water, including work to clear an initial channel for some vessels by the end of April. Four large television screens depicted maps and images of the bridge site. Biden in one moment pointed to an image of the tangled underwater situation asking whether it was steel, though his other questions could not be heard by a small group of reporters in the room. Told of the unified state, local and federal efforts, the president at one point turned to Moore, directly to his left, and gave him an assuring tap on the shoulder. He went on to greet, one by one, law enforcement officers who stopped traffic on the bridge just moments before it collapsed.

Moore thanked Biden for his support, saying his first call from the White House was around 3 a.m. after the bridge fell around 1:30 a.m.

“President Biden might not be a Marylander by birth. But I tell you, he has proven what it means to be Maryland tough and Baltimore strong,” Moore said, referencing the mantra he’s used since the bridge collapse.

The Army Corps of Engineers said Thursday that it was pushing an “ ambitious timeline ” to return port access to “normal capacity” by the end of May. A channel 280 feet wide and 35 deep that would allow barge container service and some vessels to pass through could also be open by the end of April.

Meanwhile, the remains of three of the six men who were killed when the bridge came down remain in the water, and the 21 crew members onboard the Singapore-flagged Dali are still on board .

“We’ll never forget the contribution these men made to this city. We’re going to work hard to recover each of them,” Biden said of the victims, adding his “vow is to not rest” until the bridge is rebuilt.

A $60 million “down payment” from the federal government was approved within days , allowing for vital cleanup work as cranes began arriving and removing the debris. Most of the additional emergency relief funds, in an account flush with nearly $1 billion, can be approved by Biden. Some will need congressional approval, though, and Democratic U.S. Rep. Kweisi Mfume, of Baltimore, said he’d introduce legislation next week to cover that and other federal funding issues. With the far-right Freedom Caucus saying Friday it would force the Key Bridge funds to be contingent on other compromises, Mfume said the threat was intended to be obstructionist and that Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has told him he “understands the weight and the depth” of the problem.

Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young, in a letter to Congress on Friday, asked for them to ensure that the federal government pays for 100% of the costs. She said the administration would pursue “any compensation for damages or insurance proceeds” to reduce the burden on taxpayers.

“Your nation has your back and I mean it,” Biden said.

The financial impact will be immense. Total costs for a new bridge could run high into the hundreds of millions, and insurance claims expected to reach $1 billion or more could make the collapse the maritime industry’s largest-ever financial loss .

Other officials who joined the president in his Baltimore briefing Friday were U.S. Sens. Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen, Mfume, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, Baltimore County Executive John Olszewski Jr. and Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman. All are Democrats and have taken steps within local or federal government to advance the relief efforts for the victims families, businesses that relied on the bridge and port, and plan for rebuilding.

Biden spoke of his own personal connections to the bridge and to Baltimore, where his father was born and his great great grandfather worked as a waterman. Of the roughly 30,000 vehicles that traveled across it every day, he was one of them, commuting from Delaware to Washington, D.C., when he was a senator.

“Folks, we now face a question no American should ever have to ask: ‘How will I get to work? How will I get to school? How will I get to the hospital?’” Biden said. “The response of everyone, including Congress, should be asking only one question, and they’re going to be asked a question by your delegation, ‘How can we help?’”

Biden announces plans to address Baltimore port closure and help workers after deadly bridge collapse

After visiting the site of the deadly Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse on Friday, President Joe Biden said that his administration is taking swift action to try to ease the disruption at Baltimore's port and help workers and small businesses affected by the port closure.

After an aerial tour of the site, Biden said that the federal government will provide more than $8 million in grant funds to make infrastructure improvements to the port at Baltimore's Sparrows Point — an area unaffected by the bridge collapse — so it can take on more ships.

The president also announced that his administration would provide grants to workers affected by the pause in port operations and said the Small Business Administration would offer low-interest loans for small businesses impacted by the incident last week.

"I’m here to say your nation has your back," Biden said. "The damage is devastating and our hearts are still breaking," he continued, noting that six workers who were fixing potholes on the bridge lost their lives.

"I’ve come here to grieve with you," he said, flanked by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and other Maryland and Baltimore officials. "It’s not the same, but I know a little bit about what it’s like to lose a piece of your soul."

Biden reiterated that he wants Congress to pass funding to cover the entire cost of constructing a new bridge. He also said that, so far, two small channels have been cleared for ships helping to clear the wreckage and noted the tentative timeline for reopening the port announced Thursday by the Army Corps of Engineers.

The Army Corps of Engineers expects “to open a limited access channel for barge container service and some vessels that move automobiles and farm equipment by the end of April” and “restore the port to normal capacity by the end of May,” the White House said.

In addition to the aerial tour, Biden received an operational update on response efforts from the Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers and was expected to meet personally with the families of the six workers who died.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early on the morning of March 26 when a cargo ship crashed into a support pillar. The remains of two people who were killed have been recovered, four others are presumed dead and two people who fell into the water survived.

Biden addressed the disaster during remarks in the hours following the collapse, saying that the White House would send “all the federal resources they need” and that they would rebuild the port. He also said that he intended for the federal government to pay the entire cost of reconstructing the bridge.

Director of the Office of Management and Budget Shalanda Young sent a letter to congressional leaders on Friday asking them to authorize "a 100 percent Federal cost share for rebuilding the bridge."

“To the people of Baltimore, I want to say: We’re with you. We’re going to stay with you as long as takes. And like [Moore] said, you’re Maryland tough, you’re Baltimore strong, and we’re going to get through this together,” Biden said during his remarks last week. “And I promise: We’re not leaving.”

The National Economic Council has also convened the administration's Supply Chain Disruptions Task Force to coordinate federal efforts to support affected industries in the aftermath of the collapse, the White House announced last week.

“We are much better equipped to mitigate supply chain disruptions than we were just a few years ago, thanks to increased coordination across the supply chain and new efforts to strengthen both our physical and digital infrastructure,” Buttigieg said in a statement.

Also last week, the Department of Transportation announced $60 million in emergency relief funds to go toward rebuilding the bridge. The White House said it would serve as a "down payment" for initial costs.

In 2023, the Baltimore port near the bridge, a key shipping hub and source of jobs, “handled a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo, worth $80 billion,” Moore announced in February. The port also generated more than 15,000 direct jobs, “with nearly 140,000 jobs linked to port activities,” he said in the statement.

Charley Hoffman reflects on eve of 500th PGA TOUR start

Charley Hoffman didn’t realize he was approaching a major milestone until this year’s WM Phoenix Open. Once he found out, he knew exactly where to make it.

Hoffman will make his 500th career PGA TOUR start this week, an accomplishment that only 6% of PGA TOUR golfers who have made at least 20 starts share. He will do it at the event that has arguably been Hoffman’s most fruitful: The Valero Texas Open.

The site of Hoffman’s most recent win on TOUR, TPC San Antonio has often felt like a second home to the venerable veteran. Hoffman will make his 18th appearance at the event this week. He’s made the cut 16 times, with 13 top 25s and seven top 10s. Alongside his win in 2016, he finished runner-up three times. So when it came time to decide which tournament would be his 500th, it was an easy selection.

“It's so near and dear to my heart and a place where the family I knew during spring break could come and celebrate that sort of stuff with me,” Hoffman said Wednesday. “It's something we hand-picked.

“It’s quite mind-blowing,” he continued. “It's something that I probably never thought I'd get to and it's quite an accomplishment. I want more, I don't see myself going anywhere as long as I'm healthy. I obviously want to hopefully get to 600.”

Hoffman’s first start came 30 years ago at the 1994 Farmers Insurance Open as a long-haired 16-year-old high schooler. It would be another four years before he turned pro and six more years after that before he earned his PGA TOUR card for the first time in 2005. His maiden PGA TOUR win came at The American Express 2007, withstanding 40 mph winds on Sunday to beat John Rollins in a playoff. Hoffman has kept his card ever since.

“The Charley Hoffman with the long hair and trying to become a PGA TOUR player and star, I think I was just dumb enough to think I could do it,” he said. “I thought I could compete with the best in the world. I played my first event when I was 16 in San Diego and I thought I could play with the guys.”

It’s a mindset that has stayed with him and propelled him through the last several years as he battled injury and poor form.

“Then now, and I'll use at the WM Phoenix Open (he finished runner-up this year), I think I'm just dumb enough to think I can compete against these 20-something-year-olds and I still think I can beat them," Hoffman said. "So I think there's a little bit of stupidity inside there which is consistent through all this."

Hoffman, playing the 2024 season on a Career Money Exemption, is currently No. 56 in the FedExCup on the strength of that result at TPC Scottsdale, where he lost to Nick Taylor in a playoff. He is the second of three players expected to surpass 500 career TOUR starts this season. Ryan Palmer did so at The Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches. Two-time Valero Texas Open winner Zach Johnson is making his 497 th career start this week.

Hoffman will tee off at 8:42 a.m. ET from the 10th tee Thursday with Maverick McNealy and Nicolai Højgaard.

The Indian men's hockey team will face the Kookaburras in five matches as part of its 2024 tour of Australia. All five matches, to be live streamed, will be played in Perth, with the first scheduled this Saturday.

A tour against Tokyo 2020 silver medallists Australia in their own backyard will be a tough test for India and provide Craig Fulton’s men with the perfect opportunity to finetune their preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympics in July-August.

Fulton has named a full-strength 27-member Indian hockey team for the tour with star drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh as captain. Hardik Singh , who was named Hockey India’s Men’s Player of the Year for 2023, will be his deputy.

Performances during the tour Down Under will count for those eager to seal a spot in the final 16-member Indian team for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Both Australia and India have been drawn in Pool B of the men’s hockey tournament at Paris Olympics, with the two teams set to meet in their final group match on August 2.

The tour will also provide both teams a chance to measure each other up before the big meeting in France.

Currently, Australia are ranked fifth in the world hockey rankings while India are fourth.

The two teams have already squared off twice this year in the FIH Pro League. The Kookaburras won the first match 6-4 at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.

India held the Aussies to a 2-2 draw at the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela in the second fixture but ended up losing the bonus point shootout 3-0.
