I have been passionate about travel for as long as I can remember, beginning with trips cross-country at a very young age. My love for this profession was apparent after starting with Carlson Hotels in their call center many years ago and since then, guest satisfaction has been my main priority. It was only when starting my career with Oceania Cruises that I truly found my calling. After 7 insightful years at Oceania working with Travel Advisors and guests, as well as over a decade behind the scenes, I decided to take my knowledge to the front lines. It is my pleasure to be an advocate for my guests in all their travel endeavors with Beyond Group Travel.

Our expert consultants are full-time employees who hold salaried positions and do not earn commission on sales. Our only incentive is to make our clients happy by designing custom safaris and exceeding service expectations. Planning safaris is not just a job for us; it’s our passion. Although each client partners with one consultant, the collective knowledge of the best safari team in the industry is a unique bonus in our safari planning process.

We embrace our position in the market as a consultant that represents only the interests of our clients. We have no financial interests in Africa (or anywhere else in the world.) For more than 40 years we have vetted the best and most ethical service providers on the ground to ensure our client’s safari experiences are seamless. Ethical providers will ensure Africa is there for our children and grandchildren to see. Many of our consultants have lived and worked in the safari industry in Africa, building trusted, personal relationships with our on-the-ground partners. We’re dedicated to only working with highly reliable tour and transfer companies, many of which have been serving our customers since Travel Beyond’s first years in business!

Nobu: Cabo San Lucas’ Sleek Hideaway

Fora Author Fora

Named after its celebrity chef, Nobu restaurant is a name revered worldwide for its Japanese dishes and high-end sushi. And in 2019, the prestigious brand opened its first hotel in Mexico: Nobu Hotel Los Cabos, taking its luxe, minimalist style and signature dining experience to Baja California Sur.

Less than an hour from Los Cabos International Airport, Nobu Hotel Los Cabos is ideal for couples’ getaways, group trips and long weekends, enveloping guests in understated luxury. Low-slung buildings crafted from wood and stone are fashioned to reflect the tranquil desert palette. Highlights include a world-class spa, epicurean delights at multiple restaurants and a bevy of water and land activities to create an unparalleled experience.

And when you book through Fora, you’re treated to VIP perks like a $100 hotel / resort credit, daily breakfast credit, an upgrade and extended check-in/out whenever possible.

Ready to dive into luxury? Connect with Fora to start planning your Cabo San Lucas trip.

Luxe guest rooms, suites and Nobu residences

There are no entry-level guest rooms at Nobu Hotel Los Cabos, with the first tier Deluxe rooms coming in at an impressive 514 square feet. Spa-like, open bathrooms feature Onsen teak soaking tubs, and all rooms have outdoor space to savor the views. For a refreshing treat, guests can opt for swim-up rooms, which provide direct entry to the main pool, or splurge on a private pool with ocean views.

For larger groups, guests can experience one of the 60 Nobu residences, which range from one to four bedrooms and have an unmatched list of amenities. Think panoramic views from long covered terraces, private outdoor pools, fully equipped kitchens and dedicated personal concierge service.

Fora Advisor Rachel Meyers loves the hotel’s “zen vibes and Japanese minimalist design,”  noting that the “food at Nobu restaurant is amazing and overlooks the beach at sunset.”

Even with all these posh amenities, Nobu Los Cabos doesn’t want you to leave your best friend behind. The hotel’s pet program treats your furry friends like royalty, with pet-friendly outdoor dining, cushy pet beds, a bowl and bottled water (note: pet fees do apply).

Experience the famous Nobu Restaurant & beyond

Fans of Chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s Japanese menus will not be disappointed. Not only is there an outpost of his iconic restaurant here at Nobu Hotel Los Cabos, but it’s made even better with stunning Pacific views and dreamy outdoor seating. Signature dishes beloved the world over include rock shrimp tempura and miso black cod, while other options include spicy tuna tostadas and scallops with jalapeño salsa.

Paying homage to Cabo San Lucas, Pacific Restaurant is all about Mexican flair. Rustic-chic wood furnishings and a stone terrace give the restaurant a minimalist feel, while the menu touts vibrant flavors and tequila pairings. Try the Mexican take on a classic by ordering confit duck carnitas, or savor roasted octopus flavored with chorizo.

Two more restaurants round out the culinary offerings at this Mexican escape – Ardea Steakhouse and Muna Restaurant. Far from a traditional steakhouse, Ardea’s bold interior has a Japanese feel, while Muna’s light and airy decor match its Mediterranean offerings.

In addition to the variety of menus, Nobu Cabo San Lucas has six bars, including a swim-up bar so you don’t even need to leave the pool to sip on your favorite tropical drink. And if hunger strikes in the middle of the night, 24-hour room service is just a call away.

Mexico-style wellness for the mind, body and spirit

At Nobu Hotel Los Cabos, you’ll be able to focus on all aspects of wellness, from traditional exercise to more spiritual practices to ethereal spa sessions. In addition to a state-of-the-art fitness center, guests can participate in classes, such as yoga and pilates to improve mindfulness, flexibility and strength, as well as full-body workouts to keep active guests on track.

And after a day of exploration and frolicking in the Pacific, make sure to take time for a soothing treatment at the property’s signature spa. Gorgeous design and a variety of intriguing treatments are infused with Japanese traditions, and the vast facilities include indoor and outdoor hydrotherapy areas, featuring a cabana Jacuzzi, co-ed lounges and an open-air water circuit, plus traditional saunas and steam rooms.

Exploring Mexico: curated on-site and off-site activities

The star of Nobu Hotel Los Cabos is the fantastic coastal location in Mexico. Warm sand beaches combine with four on-property swimming pools, including an adults-only pool and indulgent swim-up cabanas. With such beautiful surroundings, it may be hard to pull yourself away from the resort, but these adventures are worth it.

To see Cabo San Lucas from a different point of view, book a private catamaran and customize your own day at sea, including dinner cruises, snorkeling excursions and even whale watching. Another water option is a larger yacht-style cruise, where you can explore the Sea of Cortez in style, while still getting a taste of adventure with the on-board snorkeling equipment and kayaks.

For land-based activities, ride through desert and mountain terrain with a guided ATV day trip, or spend an afternoon in the charming town of Todos Santos, Mexico, where a bohemian vibe attracts artisan shops and eco-friendly activities include releasing baby sea turtles.

And if you want to stay closer to home, check out pickleball, the kids’ club and the golf courses.

Insider tip: For the ultimate luxury, get in touch with the concierge to plan your unique Mexico experience. Completely customizable, this activity is tailored to your preferences, whether it’s a tequila tasting, a bonfire with fireworks or a private beach dinner.

These differently-abled travel buffs are scooting beyond limits

'We have to sit on wheelchairs to move, anyway. In that case, why not move them longer distances?' According to Sadique Kunjani, it is this question that urged him and his wheelchair-bound friends to undertake their first trip to Gundelpet. After around 50 such trips to destinations including Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and various destinations in Kerala, they have traversed more than 70,000 kilometres and are gearing up for more. Sadique, who was confined to a wheelchair after being affected by muscular dystrophy in childhood, met many like him at the 'Santhwanam' camp organised by the Perinthalmanna Municipality, years ago. Sadique's friend Rahul's movements were restricted following a spine injury. He also became friends with Bhadarusaman, his wife Muneera, Sujeev, Vivek, Nishad, Saji, Jaffer, Abubaker, Shaji and Salim, who all have similar stories to tell.

A new bond The wheelchairs, the motorbikes and their stories fuelled bondage among them that stood the test of time. The camp took them to many enthralling destinations, especially on buses. As they were not in a position to stretch themselves while sitting on bus seats, they missed many breathtaking vistas. When Sadique and his friends tried to soak in the wonderful sights with the help of volunteers, they were haunted by the thought that they were invalid. Finally, the travel buffs decided to travel sans volunteers. “We decided to travel on scooters attached with extra wheels, which were used for local transportation, for our first trip to Gundlupet. On May 12, 2016, we reached Gundlupet after riding our scooters via Nadukaanichuram and Bandipur after traversing the Muthumalai Reserve Forest. And we reached home via Wayanad,” he recollects.

‘Vijrambitha Yatra’ and ‘Komban’ When the travel group started riding the scooters, the members realized the mesmerizing vistas they missed while they travelled on buses. “We took a break when someone was sapped of energy or after riding continuously for 15 to 20km. We will get down from the scooters and talk to the local people. The wheelchairs that are strapped behind the scooters will be used to move around in the area and enjoy the wonderful views,” Sadique adds. The first group, named ‘Vijrambitha Yatra’, was created just to share the photos clicked during the maiden trip. As a matter of fact, the stupendous success of the first tour was a great surprise to the members of the group. “The majestic look of the wild elephants is still fresh in our minds. The society sees us as people with physical disabilities. The problem arises when we also think along similar lines. Fortitude and perseverance are in our minds,” he notes. Within days, the group’s appellation was changed to ‘Komban Riders’.

the travel beyond group

Something extraordinary Whoever came to know about the travel grouping’s first expedition, only tried to dissuade them. “We know that they trying to stop us from travelling out of love. But our desire has no boundaries. We have to lead an extraordinary life to survive in this world. Everyone thought that those who lived with the help of others were coming together to embark on a journey. People raised many issues like, what if an elephant charged at you?” Sadique says. To prove their naysayers wrong, the group members will flash a tiger photo that was clicked in close proximity to the wild cat at the Bandipur Wildlife Sanctuary. “A driver kept his car as a shield when the tiger came near us. We are grateful to the driver not only for protecting us but also for providing an opportunity to see the beauty of the wild animal in close quarters,” he adds.

A night at Aanakuzhi Once, the group was travelling to Mulli near Attapadi with the guidance of the Google map, and both sides of the road were covered in verdant forest. “Up ahead we saw a canal as we reached Aanakuzhi and the road continued beyond that water body. It was getting dark and one of the vehicles got stuck in the canal. We all got down and pushed the scooter out of the canal but the engine was dead as water had seeped into it. Later, the scooter was towed to a nearby village. The villagers were quite surprised that we travelled through the road at that time of the day. The danger was lurking as the canal was the drinking water source of the wild elephants,” Sadique says.

the travel beyond group

‘Enter on foot’ The group usually travels to destinations that are wheelchair-friendly. The members longed to visit the Vagamon Adventure Park and the viewpoint. But when they reached there, they were told that they could enter the park only on foot and not in wheelchairs. “We decided not to enter the park if wheelchairs are not allowed inside. The park officials were obdurate as for them wheelchairs were nothing but vehicles. A similar incident happened when we visited the Sholayar dam. The good part is that we were allowed inside wheelchairs at both these places. But unfortunately, we were barred from entering Vagamon viewpoint and the museum in Thiruvananthapuram,” he adds.

Music on wheels Sadique and his travel buddies were sitting in a circle and singing songs at the Ooty Botanical Garden. Later, a motley crowd stood around the travel buffs and started singing and dancing along with them. A band by the name of ‘Music on Wheels’ took shape after that memorable incident. “We joined hands with differently-abled people of Malappuram to form the music band. To date, we have conducted more than 250 musical programmes,” Sadique notes. Most of the members of the ‘Komban Riders’ are working in ‘Freedom’, which is a startup company incorporated with the technical assistance of ‘Santhwanam’, to manufacture wheelchairs. “We embark on a journey with our hard-earned money. This shows one thing – we don’t want anyone’s sympathy. Allow us to do something. We are also human beings with lots of desire,” Sadique concludes.

Group Travel Insurance: A Comprehensive Guide

  • Group travel insurance is a single policy that covers groups of 10 or more.
  • Everyone in the group must have the same itinerary and travel to the same destination.
  • Shop early and compare quotes to get the best deal.

Whether preparing for a large family reunion in another state, booking a business trip with colleagues, or traveling with your college crew to a new country, you might consider group travel insurance. Group travel insurance provides financial protection for trips of 10 or more groups. But apart from the party size requirements, it functions the same as other travel insurance policies.

Here's what you need to know about group travel insurance — how to determine if you need it, different options, and tips to secure the best deal.

Group travel insurance is a single travel insurance policy that protects everyone on a trip. The policies are available for groups of 10 or more. Unlike other insurance policies that only cover one person or family travel insurance that only covers related travelers, group travel insurance can cover any group traveling together. You do not have to be related.

Group travel insurance policies usually offer comprehensive coverage, including standard protections against lost luggage, legal fees, medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and more.

Key Benefits of Group Travel Insurance

Cost-effectiveness.

Group travel insurance may be cheaper than buying separate policies for each individual traveler. Insurance companies may provide discounts for insuring multiple people, as this lowers administrative overhead per person. This is similar to how auto insurers offer rate reductions for consumers who insure multiple people under one policy.

It's worth noting that group travel insurance costs depend on the insurer and your trip details. Comparing quotes can help you find the best rates on the coverages you need.

You can find our guide to the best cheap travel insurance here.

Simplified management

Group travel insurance might make sense if everyone in your group has the same itinerary and travels to the same destination. The main perk of group travel insurance versus separate policies for each person is that it streamlines the purchasing process. You can buy one policy instead of multiple.

But to make it work, your group needs to be organized. This is especially true if group members intend to split the cost of the policy. It's crucial to communicate well with the people in your group and ensure everyone is on the same page.

Coverage Options

Common coverage features.

Most group travel insurance policies offer comprehensive coverage, which usually covers common travel issues like cancellations and medical emergencies.

Here's what comprehensive group travel insurance covers :

  • Trip cancellation insurance: If you need to cancel your trip, this coverage reimburses you for the cost of travel. Each policy includes a list of cancellation reasons that are covered.
  • Travel insurance for baggage: This covers the cost of stolen or missing luggage.
  • Emergency medical evacuation insurance : Covers the cost of transportation from one location to another due to an emergency medical situation.
  • Travel medical insurance: If you need medical care due to illness or injury while traveling, this part of the policy covers the cost.
  • Trip interruption travel insurance: If you have to cut your trip short due to an unforeseen emergency, this helps pay for travel plan changes.
  • Trip delay travel insurance: If there are delays to your flight or another aspect of your trip, this covers extra costs associated with the delay. It might include reimbursement for meals or hotel expenses.

Additional coverage options

You can customize your travel insurance policy with coverage options at an additional premium. These add-ons can be helpful to provide adequate coverage for your group's specific needs. Some examples include:

  • Adventure and sports coverage: For planned activities that involved increased risk (e.g., hiking, scuba diving, skiing, etc.)
  • Special events coverage: For cancellations, interruptions, or other losses that occur during planned events (e.g., weddings, corporate events, excursions, etc.)
  • Equipment coverage: For damage, loss, or theft of equipment or gear brought on the trip (e.g., sports equipment, tech, etc.)
  • Pre-existing condition waiver : For those with pre-existing conditions to receive travel medical coverage while traveling

Choosing the right group travel insurance

Assessing group needs.

Assessing your group's needs can help you choose the right group travel insurance. Some factors to consider include but aren't limited to the duration and destination of your trip, the type of travelers and their needs (including their ages and any pre-existing conditions), planned activities, and the group's budget.

Comparing insurance providers

Depending on the details of your trip, group travel insurance might be cheaper than purchasing individual policies for each traveler. But that is not always the case. As you shop for group travel insurance, there are steps you can take to ensure you get the best deal.

Get multiple quotes

It's smart to compare quotes from several providers. Multiple quotes allow you to compare coverage options and pricing. You can use a travel insurance comparison site like SquareMouth or TravelInsurance.com. Or you can contact providers directly. Once you know the price range for protection, you can select the provider that seems like the best fit.

The best time to buy travel insurance is right after you make your first trip deposit. Your policy kicks in right away, which is helpful if an event occurs that forces you to cancel your trip. Additionally, an early purchase can be necessary to qualify for certain riders, such as pre-existing condition coverage and CFAR travel insurance .

Application and enrollment process

You should be prepared to provide the following information about your group when fielding quotes from travel insurance companies.

  • Trip dates
  • Travelers' names and date of birth
  • Destination
  • Initial trip deposit date
  • Cost of trip per traveler (prepaid and nonrefundable expenses)

Your insurance company may ask for additional information, such as pre-existing medical conditions and planned activities.

Policy management and claims

The coverage you select applies to everyone in the group. Each group member can make individual claims, which is helpful if only one or two people need to make a claim. But if everyone is involved, the entire group can file claims.

Special Considerations for Group Travel Insurance

Tailoring policies to group type.

It's important to tailor your insurance policy based on the type of group and the trip to ensure adequate protection. For example, if you're traveling with senior members, you want your policy's medical coverage to include pre-existing conditions. If your trip has physical or outdoor activities, adventure and sports coverage is additional protection worth considering.

A travel insurance agent can help you identify which coverages are necessary for your group's trip and find a policy that works for your group's budget.

Handling diverse member needs

Handling the diverse needs of group members within a single policy requires careful attention to policy details, including coverage specifics and deductibles. Start by thoroughly reviewing the policy to understand the included coverages and associated deductibles. If certain coverages are unnecessary for your group, ask your insurer whether they can be removed to reduce costs.

You may want to look for a policy with add-ons or customizable options. This allows you to tailor the coverage to meet the specific needs of different group members. Additionally, consider raising the deductible to lower the premium. However, ensure the deductible amount is affordable for all members in case a claim needs to be filed. This ensures your group has adequate protection while accommodating the diverse financial needs of the group.

Group travel insurance final recommendations and tips

Best practices for group leaders.

Before your trip, communicate insurance details like coverage inclusions, exclusions, deductibles, and how to file a claim with your group. It also helps to maintain policy documents in case an unexpected event arises.

You and your group should also establish a contingency plan and save your insurance's emergency hotline contact number for medical emergencies, natural disasters, or other travel disruptions.

Resources for further information

For further information on group travel insurance, check out:

  • Insurance companies' websites for information about coverage options, exclusions, and getting a quote.
  • Travel insurance comparison sites allow users to compare policies from multiple providers at once based on coverage, price, and other factors. Some examples of comparison websites include InsureMyTrip , Squaremouth, and VisitorsCoverage .
  • Travel agencies to help you book your trip and pick group travel insurance based on your itinerary.
  • Consumer review sites like Trustpilot and ConsumerAffairs to read first-hand testimonials by real users on their experience with a company.

Group travel insurance FAQs

Group travel insurance typically requires a minimum of 10 travelers to qualify for group travel insurance, but this varies by provider.

Yes, many group travel insurance policies offer options for various activities specific to the group's needs and travel itinerary, such as adventure and sports, special events, and equipment coverage.

Group travel insurance can be more cost-effective per person than individual policies, especially for larger groups. Compare quotes from various insurance providers to get the best deal on the coverages you need.

If one member  of a group travel insurance plan has an issue, that member can file a claim with the travel insurance company individually. That's why it's important for every member to be familiar with the claims process in case an issue arises.

A group leader should consider the group's specific needs, planned activities, destination-specific risks, and the group's budget when choosing a travel insurance policy.

HL Mando-Backed Korean Radar Startup Raises $25 Million, Eyes Growth Beyond Autonomous Cars

The Series B round marks the fourth time HL Mando, the auto parts making unit of South Korean conglomerate HL Group, has invested in Bitsensing.

Jae-Eun Lee, CEO and founder of Bitsensing.

B itsensing, a South Korean developer of imaging radar technology, has raised a $25 million Series B round as the startup seeks to partner with strategic investor HL Mando, a leading car parts maker, and its sister companies to expand beyond autonomous vehicles and smart cities.

Series B investors include HL Mando, Life Asset Management, South Korean city gas supplier Samchully’s SCL Investment and Woori Financial Group, Bitsensing said in a statement this week. The startup declined to disclose the valuation.

The Series B round boosts total outside funding to $46 million. Jae-Eun Lee, CEO and founder of Bitsensing, says in a video interview that the startup is currently in talks with a global semiconductor company for an extension round.

This is the fourth time HL Mando has invested in Bitsensing, says Lee, who was previously a senior engineer at the auto components supplier. HL Mando is the crown jewel of South Korean conglomerate HL Group, formerly Halla Group. HL Group was founded as Hyundai International in 1962 by Chung In-yung, younger brother of Hyundai founder Chung Ju-yung. HL Group’s chairman, Chung Mong-won, is an uncle of billionaire Euisun Chung , Hyundai Motor’s chairman.

Bitsensing, founded in 2018, develops high-resolution radars for autonomous cars and smart city applications. Lee says Bitsensing expects to become profitable next year and is planning an initial public offering in 2026.

Based in Seongnam, south of Seoul, Bitsensing is working with HL Klemove, HL Group’s autonomous vehicle unit, to incorporate its radar technology, says Lee. Bitsensing’s automotive radar sensors can be manufactured by HL Mando, he adds.

Besides cars, Lee says Bitsensing’s imaging radar technology has potential applications for smart homes. The startup is working on smart-home offerings with HL Group’s construction arm—the conglomerate’s other major business area.

“Current smart home technology uses infrared sensors, which is very simple and cheap, but it is not that accurate,” says Lee, who earned a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from Seoul National University. “So it’s usually just used for very simple use cases, such as motion-sensor lights. But our radar sensors are more accurate and we can control all lights and electronic devices.” For example, Bitsensing’s radar sensors can detect whether a person fell asleep watching TV based on breathing and chest movement, then turn off the TV if the person is sleeping.

The ability to monitor sleep can also be used in healthcare, such as at hospitals and elderly-care centers, adds Lee.

Another growing area for Bitsensing is robotics. “HL Group is developing robots for various applications, like delivery robots and patrol robots,” says Lee. “If HL Group develops robots, they need a lot of sensors.”

Lee is still looking for more ways to utilize Bitsensing’s radar technology. “HL Group has a lot of subsidiaries,” he says. Besides mobility and construction, HL Group also has a logistics business and owns golf resorts, an ice hockey team and a university.

“Our mission is, ‘Radar everywhere,’ ” says Lee.

Where to watch Albania vs. Spain: UEFA Euro 2024 Group B live online, TV, prediction and odds

La roja chasing 100% record as kuqezinjtë cling to knockout round hope.

spain-6.jpg

Spain are already confirmed to finish top of UEFA Euro 2024 Group B and Monday's clash with Albania could see them confirm three wins out of three for a 100% record of nine points. La Roja saw off defending champions Italy which keeps the door open for this Kuqezinjtë side after a dramatic last-gasp 2-2 draw with Croatia .

Luis de la Fuente's men needed an own goal to beat the Azzurri while Sylvinho's side saw Klaus Gjasula 's redemption act of equalizing after scoring an own goal to gift Vatreni a late come-from-behind lead. Consequently, Albania still have a shot at the round of 16 -- either ahead of Luciano Spalletti's Italian side in second or behind them as one of the best third-placed sides -- which would be their first-ever knockout phase appearance at a major international tournament.

Taking points off of the Spanish is easier said than done, though, with a healthy position at the top of Group B likely to result in a rotated squad for this one as De la Fuente gets a look at other members of his group. Spain are up against one of the third-placed sides from Groups A, D, E or F in the round of 16 which could set them on course to face hosts Germany in the quarterfinals.

Here are our storylines, how you can watch the match and more:

How to watch and odds

  • Date: Monday, June 24 | Time: 3 p.m. ET
  • Location: Düsseldorf Arena - Düsseldorf, Germany
  • TV: FS1 | Live stream:  Fubo ( try for free )
  • Odds: Albania +650; Draw +350; Spain -225

Spain are already through to the round of 16 in top spot so Group B can only change from second spot to last place. Italy lead the way to complete the top two but could be overhauled by Albania or Croatia although both of those sides winning is an unlikely scenario. A draw would be enough to secure second for the Azzurri while Vatreni not only need points but also to undo their unfavorable goal difference of minus three.

Albania: Five players could be suspended if they pick up another booking with Armando Broja joining Gjasula, Elseid Hysaj , Arber Hoxha and Mirlind Daku in risking a ban for the round of 16. Gjasula's goal might have earned him extra consideration for a starting role but Sylvinho could also stick with his XI and therefore keep Rey Manaj up top over Broja.

Possible Albania XI: Strakosha; Hysaj, Ajeti, Djimsiti, Mitaj; Asllani, Ramadani; Asani, Laci, Bajrami; Manaj.

Spain: Rodri is suspended while Nacho and Ayoze Perez are doubts but changes are still expected from De la Fuente in Dusseldorf. Martin Zubimendi could replace Rodri while Mikel Oyarzabal , Mikel Merino , Ferran Torres , Alejandro Grimaldo, Jesus Navas and David Raya could all get a chance.

Possible Spain XI: Raya; Navas, Vivian, Laporte, Grimaldo; Merino, Zubimendi, Baena; Torres, Joselu , Oyarzabal.

Even if Spain rotate heavily, La Roja should still have too much for Albania. Sylvinho's Kuqezinjtë might be able to keep it tight and get themselves a goal, but even a draw would be an impressive result but unlikely to be enough to advance. Pick: Albania 1, Spain 2.

Alito’s ‘Godliness’ Comment Echoes a Broader Christian Movement

Justice Samuel Alito’s secretly recorded remarks come as many conservatives have openly embraced the view that American democracy must be grounded in a Christian worldview.

  • Share full article

A portrait of Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. in black robe and red tie against a red background.

By Elizabeth Dias and Lisa Lerer

It’s a phrase not commonly associated with legal doctrine: returning America to “a place of godliness.”

And yet when asked by a woman posing as a Catholic conservative at a dinner last week, Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. appeared to endorse the idea . The unguarded moment added to calls for greater scrutiny by Democrats, many of whom are eager to open official investigations into outside influence at the Supreme Court.

But the core of the idea expressed to Mr. Alito, that the country must fight the decline of Christianity in public life, goes beyond the questions of bias and influence at the nation’s highest court. An array of conservatives, including antiabortion activists, church leaders and conservative state legislators, has openly embraced the idea that American democracy needs to be grounded in Christian values and guarded against the rise of secular culture.

They are right-wing Catholics and evangelicals who oppose abortion, same-sex marriage, transgender rights and what they see as the dominance of liberal views in school curriculums. And they’ve become a crucial segment of former President Donald J. Trump’s political coalition, intermingled with the MAGA movement that boosted him to the White House and that hopes to do so once again in November.

The movement’s rise has been evident across the country since Mr. Trump lost re-election in 2020. The National Association of Christian Lawmakers formed to advance Christian values and legislation among elected officials. This week in Indianapolis , delegates to the Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant denomination in America, are voting on issues like restricting in vitro fertilization and further limiting women from pastoral positions.

And in Congress, Mike Johnson, a man with deep roots in this movement and the Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative Christian legal advocacy group, is now speaker of the House.

Now, Supreme Court justices have become caught up in the debate over whether America is a Christian nation. While Justice Alito is hardly openly championing these views, he is embracing language and symbolism that line up with a much broader movement pushing back against the declining power of Christianity as a majority religion in America.

The country has grown more ethnically diverse and the share of American adults who describe themselves as religiously unaffiliated has risen steadily over the past decade. Still, a 2022 report from the Pew Research Center found that more than four in 10 adults believed America should be a “Christian nation.”

Justice Alito’s agreement isn’t the first time he has embraced Christian ways of talking about the law and his vision for the nation.

Shortly after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade two years ago, a ruling for which Justice Alito wrote the majority opinion, the justice flew to Rome and addressed a private summit on religious liberty hosted by the University of Notre Dame. His overarching concern was the decline of Christianity in public life, and he warned of what he saw as a “growing hostility to religion, or at least the traditional religious beliefs that are contrary to the new moral code that is ascendant.”

“We can’t lightly assume that the religious liberty enjoyed today in the United States, in Europe and in many other places will always endure,” he said, referencing Christians “torn apart by wild beasts” at the Colosseum before the fall of the Roman Empire.

A flag associated with support for a more Christian-minded government was also flown at Justice Alito’s beach home, according to reporting from The New York Times.

The “Appeal to Heaven” flag, or Pine Tree flag, is a symbol from the Revolutionary War period, but it has gained new traction among conservative Christian supporters of the “Stop the Steal” movement, some of whom carried the flag during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Justice Alito said that his wife , Martha-Ann Alito, was “solely responsible” for flags flown at his homes.

At the same event last week where Justice Alito spoke in support of “godliness,” his wife said she wanted to fly a “Sacred Heart of Jesus flag” to push back against a neighborhood Pride flag, according to more secretly recorded comments. Justice Alito, his wife said, asked her to refrain from putting it up after the recent flag controversy.

The Times has not heard the full unedited recording and has reviewed only the edited recording posted online, after the woman who recorded them, a liberal activist , declined to send the Times the full recording.

In Catholic tradition, the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a mystical sign of the divine love of Jesus for humanity, often symbolized with an image of a human heart wrapped in a crown of thorns, like the one Jesus wore when he was crucified.

It dates to a French saint born in 1647 named Margaret Mary Alacoque, who was paralyzed as a child and had visions of Jesus revealing his Sacred Heart to her. She inspired a tradition of devotion and an official Catholic holy day, the Feast of the Sacred Heart. Leonard Leo, the conservative legal activist and longtime head of the Federalist Society, named his late daughter Margaret Mary, who had severe spina bifida, after the saint.

But the resonance of the Sacred Heart goes beyond simply an abstract religious concept, just as the Pride flag does. Each is notable for the vision of America that they symbolize, and the different visions of marriage, family and morality that they represent. For one slice of America that celebrates L.G.B.T.Q. rights, June is Pride Month. For another devout, traditional Catholic slice, June is a time to remember the Sacred Heart.

Mr. Trump, for his part, has long courted conservative Christians, tapping into their sense of rejection in a steadily secularizing society. In 2016, he made what became a famous campaign promise that if he were elected, “Christianity will have power.”

Even now, as Mr. Trump tries to present himself as more moderate on abortion, breaking with some of his most stalwart supporters, he continues to court their support.

He spoke via video message to a gathering at the Southern Baptist Convention on Monday, where he promised a broader Christian coalition “a comeback like no other” should they vote for him. Democrats, he said, were “against your religion in particular.”

The group he addressed, the Danbury Institute, is a coalition of Christian churches and conservative activists that aims to see abortion “eradicated entirely” in America.

“These are going to be your years, because you’re going to make a comeback like just about no other group,” Mr. Trump said. “I know what’s happening. I know where you’re coming from and where you’re going. And I’ll be with you side by side.”

Abbie VanSickle contributed reporting.

The first generation of French Impressionists — innovative, challenging orthodoxies — ignited latent frustrations in artists of other lands, who took their examples home, creating a blaze of Impressionisms. These offshoots may not fetch the high prices of the founding masters, but they each reflect facets of their inspiration: painting en plein air, using square brushes, a fascination with light, an attraction to incidental scenes of contemporary life. Many of the British Impressionists will be represented at London Art Week (LAW) and Treasure House Fair next week, 150 years after the movement’s founding.

Karen Taylor of Karen Taylor Fine Art, a specialist in British women artists, says: “Many late-19th-century women artists were forging their own paths, but once you have people going to Paris, you can’t escape the Impressionist influence.” During LAW she will show, among works on paper from 1750 to 1950, a watercolour “View of Heidelberg, Germany” (1869), suffused with light, by Sarah Sophia Beale. In 1872, Beale took classes in Paris at Charles Joshua Chaplin’s studio (where American Impressionist Mary Cassatt studied); back in England she set up an art school spreading these modern French ideas.

In a painting, a leafy, mossy wood, captured on the left, opens up to a picturesque village immersed in daylight mist and overlooking a river.

You did not need to study in Paris, however, to be influenced by the new aesthetic, as feathery, intimate watercolours of mother and child (1899), probably self-portraits, by Mary Gow demonstrate. Supported by her artistic family, Gow studied at Heatherley’s in London, the first British art school to admit women to the life room in the same way as men. These images reflect the focus on female experience pioneered by Cassatt and fellow Impressionist Berthe Morisot.

Ben Elwes Fine Art will show epic Arctic landscapes painted in situ by Swedish artist Anna Boberg. Mostly self-taught, she saw herself as an expressionist rather than an Impressionist, but her style varied in response to her subject, by turns bold and vigorous, delicate and sensitive, in pursuit of colour and atmosphere. Gallery co-founder Rachel Layton Elwes hopes the exhibition Painting the Arctic Summer will bring new attention to her passionate evocations of the Nordic environment.

In a painting, two ginger girls lay on a voluminous pink bed dressed in white, airy dresses in a frescoed room. The eldest one reads a book while the youngest rests on her legs.

Alongside works by Degas and Renoir, Haynes Fine Art will exhibit paintings by the Belgian Fernand Toussaint, who painted in both Impressionist and Post-Impressionist styles. Tony Haynes says Toussaint “encompassed subjects from lovely figurative works to still life and landscapes”.

Haynes has made a speciality of the British Impressionists of the Staithes, Newlyn and St Ives schools, some of whom he is also showing. “These UK artists were encouraged to go out to Paris, sit in the cafés, attend the schools,” he says. Some went to Pont-Aven in Brittany, where Gauguin held court. Once back, they sought out atmospheric locations on the Yorkshire and Cornish coasts. Rather than revolutionaries, they felt themselves, in the words of leading figure Stanhope Forbes, as part of “one of the distinct waves of feeling which occasionally occur in Art”. They are not especially expensive either, says Haynes: “Our exhibition is about showing accessible Impressionists.”

Haynes particulary admires the vivid paintings of London- and Paris-trained Dorothea Sharp, which catch the ever-changing bright light of Cornwall’s coast: “Painting through two world wars, a terrible time to be anywhere, she offered happy subjects.” Highly regarded in her lifetime, today her work can be acquired from £12,000.

In a painting, a vase overflows with wide daisies and yellow, purple, red and pink flowers in a sun-lit room.

As part of LAW, David Messum Fine Art celebrates 50 years of showing British Impressionists. In 1985 the gallery published the first comprehensive survey of British Impresssionism, subtitled “A Garden of Bright Images”. It was an effort to draw attention to an area of British painting then often overlooked in favour of the Post-Impressionist-influenced Modernists, such as Paul Nash, Stanley Spencer and Ben Nicholson. Messum suggests that “there was Impressionism in England before French Impressionism — Constable, Gainsborough, Turner. Influence went both ways.”

The gallery championed the Scottish Colourists — Samuel John Peploe, Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell, GL Hunter and John Duncan Fergusson — who trained in France and closely followed artistic developments there. “Their market has benefited hugely from our attention — and we found a market for Swedish Impressionism also,” Messum says.

This year, the Newlyn school is Messum’s primary focus, including newly acquired pictures of local subjects with fresh brushwork and bright colours by Harold Harvey, who had studied at the Académie Julian in Paris, and Gertrude Harvey, his wife.

At the Treasure House Fair, Macconnal-Mason will show work by Harold Harvey (around £150,000), as well as a French view by anglophile Lucien Pissarro (“who we think of as British”). It will offer “Sunset on The Thames” (1917), painted from the Embankment by the Belgian painter Emile Claus, who was much influenced by Monet and spent the years of the first world war in London. David Mason says: “We especially like his London views, but also his landscapes, which border on social realism.”

A proponent of the Belgian variant of Impressionism, known as luminism, Claus will have a pastel on show at the fair with Leighton Fine Art. Nick Leighton suggests that “the market for these lesser-known names is the most interesting one. They are still very accessible.”

In a painting, the light of the sun at sunset casts orange, red and pink reflections on a light-blue river captured from above. In the centre of the scene is a tall street lamp standing on a deserted promenade and trees rendered as blue outlines.

This summer presents a good chance for these British Impressionists to have, at last, their own qualities reassessed. Given the variety of different schools, the best of them surely deserve, 150 years on, to shelve their identities as also-rans or Impressionists-lite and be recognised in their own right.

Holiday Inn ranks #1 most trusted brand in travel and hospitality, welcomes a modern future

Poised to define the next decade and beyond, the modernized iterations honor the hotel brand’s iconic heritage

the travel beyond group

The Holiday Inn brand is not only one of the most iconic names in hospitality, but one of the world's largest and most recognized brands. According to  Morning Consult Intelligence  data, the Holiday Inn brand is also the most trusted travel and hospitality brand in the country.

"Trust is invaluable," said Raul Ortiz, Vice President, Global Marketing & Brand Management for Holiday Inn. “It’s something that’s earned year after year. We are continuing to build a brand that everyone can enjoy and depend on, and this recognition serves as a testament to our ongoing efforts. We are incredibly grateful to our guests who choose to stay with us and to our hotel teams whose unwavering care is the cornerstone of our guests’ experience.”

As the first hotel chain to have a footprint in all 50 U.S. states, the Holiday Inn brand has revolutionized travel  through countless contributions to make hospitality more accessible. The brand pioneered the concept of hotel loyalty programs in February of 1983, setting an industry standard that laid the groundwork for IHG Hotels & Resorts to establish one of the world's largest loyalty programs, now known as IHG One Rewards . The brand also spearheaded the development of the first centralized hotel reservation system – Holidex, in collaboration with IBM – that paved the way for future technological advancements across the hospitality sector.

Today, this legacy of innovation continues, and the brand is using its unrivaled heritage and unique position as a world leader in travel to shape a better guest experience.

New Day, New Stay: An Iconic Brand in A Modern World

the travel beyond group

With a commitment to evolve alongside the ever-changing needs of today’s traveler, the Holiday Inn brand unveiled a refreshed and modernized prototype for its Americas estate last year.

While the first hotel to fully showcase the brand’s latest design changes is scheduled for an early 2025 debut, the Holiday Inn design aims to integrate elements of the new prototype into more than 14 U.S. hotels by the end of 2024. These adaptations will include:

  • A Stand-out Exterior: The timeless Holiday Inn sign remains a beacon of familiarity, but now complements a modern designed main building.
  • Other models include a blended restaurant and bar space catering to diverse guest needs throughout the day.
  • A new breakfast buffet will feature elevated breakfast staples and regional favorites.
  • Around the Clock Convenience: An open market concept offering a variety of travel essentials 24/7.
  • A Refreshed Welcome: A cohesive public space featuring a re-imagined interior layout to bring the front desk, order counter, bar, and market within a central unit.
  • Modern Comfort: Redesigned guest rooms cater to both business and family travelers, featuring four distinct zones for seamless functionality: a welcome zone resembling a home entryway for convenient belongings storage; a versatile work/relax zone with a dedicated desk space, lounge area, and easy connectivity; a cozy sleep zone with a comfortable bed that features tech plug-ins on either side of the headboard; and a refresh zone offering a bright and clean bathroom.
  • Flexible Spaces: Versatile, multi-purpose spaces for formal meetings and social gatherings. Additionally, the brand will offer an eBar where guests can perch, wait for others and/or ride share services, and work alone or with colleagues.
  • Timeless Traditions: Founder Kemmons Wilson drew inspiration from his kids when first launching the brand, and a swimming pool was one idea they all had in common. As a result, pools are still a brand standard to this day. Additionally, the brand’s “ Kids Stay & Eat Free ” hallmark will remain a standard, as it represents just one of the many aspects that have endeared the Holiday Inn brand to families over the decades.

Sophisticated Style and a Bold New Look

In addition to its physical transformation, the Holiday Inn brand team is introducing newly updated branding and marketing materials. The refresh includes a more sophisticated color palette, bold headlines, and dynamic images, and highlights the Holiday Inn brand’s iconic history in a richer, more modern interpretation.

The Holiday Inn "Great Sign” was once a guiding light built to attract travelers off the highway that could be seen for miles. While the “Great Sign” isn’t making an official comeback, the brand’s revamped exterior signage provides that recognizable welcome with an uplifting, illuminated green glow. Moreover, it proudly lets guests know the brand is part of the bigger IHG Hotels & Resorts family.

There are nearly 1,200 open Holiday Inn hotels with an additional 252 in the pipeline across 76 countries. As the brand continues to evolve and grow, Holiday Inn’s unwavering commitment to its guests will be to always remain a beloved and trusted brand.
