Malaysia’s first on-demand transit service Trek Rides is being prepared for launch by homegrown mobility tech startup Asia Mobiliti following a successful pilot in Petaling Jaya in September.

Trek Rides merges the digital experience of ride-hailing with public transport, enabling demand responsive transit services for effective and viable first-mile/last-mile connectivity. Designed around zones, passengers book a ride on an app and are matched to a suitable vehicle which are typically larger capacity vehicles such as 10-seater vans. Multiple passengers are ferried on trips that are routed by software to optimize pick-up and travel time. This intelligence enables more efficient movement of passengers and replaces the traditional fixed-route, timetabled nature of public transport.

The fleet partnership service model was showcased in the pilot in Petaling Jaya with a fleet of vehicles operated by Trek Rides’ first fleet-partner, KR Travel & Tours. With a dedicated fleet and professional drivers servicing each on-demand transit zone, Trek Rides is geared to service many zones within a city. With average fare rates being 60-80% lower compared to conventional ride-hailing services and without surge pricing, it will cater to a large segment of the population by connecting people to traditional public transport services and enabling economical and convenient car-less travel within a neighborhood.

Asia Mobiliti’s CEO & Co-founder, Ramachandran Muniandy adds, “We have demonstrated that on-demand transit or DRT (demand responsive transit) is a viable solution for first-mile/last-mile connectivity which has been a long-standing problem here in Malaysia. It’s been the toughest nut to crack in the passenger journey. Our service model involving fleet-partners coupled with the technology that runs off a mobility-as-a-service platform enables nationwide scale and integration with traditional public transit services.”

According to Selangor State Exco for Local Government & Public Transportation, YB Ng Sze Han who participated in the pilot, “The state government will fully support this new initiative that can help Selangor to achieve the goal of 60% public transport modal share in Selangor by 2035”.

The other guests of the pilot included State Assemblyman for Bukit Gasing YB Rajiv Rishyakaran, CEO of MBI Pn. Hajah Norita Mohd Sidek, and CEO of Smart Selangor Delivery Unit (SSDU) Dr Fahmi Ngah. YB Rajiv adds, “People want a door-to-door service. With this one that can reduce ride-hailing costs by half is absolutely welcomed and necessary, and I hope it can take off immediately.”

With the first zones earmarked for launch next year, Trek Rides is designed to integrate with and boost public transport usage. On-demand shared rides in people movers such as vans and buses reduce traffic congestion and lower travel costs. Just as importantly, this contributes to reduction of carbon emissions as Malaysia moves toward net zero targets. Over the long term, dynamic first-mile/last-mile services allow urban spaces to sustainably reshape by replacing spaces traditionally reserved for parking, traffic and vehicles with healthier, more natural spaces for living.

Ratings and Reviews

Lack of basic feature.

Used this app for the first time today & I can spot two (2) missing features - I am unable to communicate with driver given the app has no text or call driver button. Also, since this app will direct driver to pick up anyone as long as it hasn’t reach 5 passengers, would be nice to have a feature to tell the passenger on either the number of passengers that are already inside the car or how many more passengers the car needs to pick up within the area. This gives more time clarity to the passengers & help to plan their time to reach their real destinations (not the drop off point) properly. Yes, this concept is way better than had to wait for bus, but it defeat the purpose of being more efficient & faster to get to the drop off location since getting to pick up more than 1 passenger will take at least around 20 mins.

Confirm Ride

The app is quite easy to use. However on the screen the CONFIRM ride selection is blocked by the Heading ACCOUNT, so needs to improve the screen. Extremely difficult to click on the CONFIRM option.

Not Reliable and a Cheat

1. Arrival time changes from time to time. Before payment, arrival time is 2 minutes. After payment made the arrival time changes to 15 minutes! 2. Sometimes, this happened to me, payment made but the vehicle never showed up. When report made, they simple said “our vehicle was there” as if I was the one to be blamed.

Most Malaysians tend to look for places to stay that are near LRT and MRT stations so that they can take public transportation to work rather than driving and getting stuck in traffic on a daily basis.

But even then, finding a place that’s super near a train station is hard and many would still need to either drive and park their cars at the stations or take a e-hailing ride to and from the station during their commutes.

Well, you might not need to do that for much longer! Rapid KL has just announced a collaboration with Trek Rides, where for just RM2, you can take one of their vans to and from LRT and MRT stations.

Trek 1

Ask Rapid KL wrote, “Amazing news for our passengers! We are teaming up with Trek Rides to offer more convenient transportation options to and from our stations!”

“Enjoy the convenience of On-Demand Responsive Transit (DRT), reaching destinations from and to LRT, MRT and bus terminals! Trek Rides is now available at 15 stations around the Klang Valley.”

The 15 stations mentioned above are:

  • LRT Bandar Puteri
  • LRT Taman Perindustrian Puchong
  • LRT IOI Puchong Jaya
  • LRT Bandar Kinrara 5
  • LRT Universiti
  • LRT Kerinchi
  • LRT Pandan Jaya
  • LRT Pandan Indah
  • LRT Cempaka
  • LRT Setiawangsa
  • LRT Jelatak
  • MRT Cochrane

While the Trek Rides will be RM2, Universiti Malaya students at Bangsar South will get half off!

“Download the Trek App today and enjoy a guaranteed ride for only RM2 per ride in 4 zones (Puchong, Ampang, Hulu Kelang and UPM Serdang), as well as a special discount of RM1 for students at UM Bangsar South!” they added.

How can we help you?

Are you looking for some answers about Trek Rides? You’ve come to the right place – check out the useful resources below that will help you get set up!

General Questions

What is trek rides.

A. Trek Rides is a software-powered public transit service that is completely digital and responds to commuters, and is now available in Puchong, Ampang & UM-Bangsar South, UPM-Serdang & Hulu Kelang with plans to open up in more locations. The service uses a variety of vans, multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) and mini-buses to ferry commuters to their destinations just like how a public bus service does. But unlike public buses, commuters can interact with the Trek Rides drivers at any time via the Trek Rides app.

What are the main differences between Trek Rides and a public bus service?

A. Trek Rides is a Demand-Responsive Transit (DRT) service. This means that while the service is used by the public, commuters do not need to wait for a vehicle at a fixed bus stop, adhere to a fixed bus timetable or route. They can order, manage, track and get estimated times of arrival for their journeys. Think of it as having the capacity and affordability of a public bus but with the convenience and rich features of an e-hailing app. In this way, Trek Rides responds to the demands of commuters, hence the term DRT.

How exactly does Trek Rides work?

A. With Trek Rides, a vehicle can, for example, pick up six different people at six different locations but going to different destinations on the same ride. It can even pick up a seventh passenger along the way and accommodate his/her destination without extending the duration of the trip for other passengers.

Trek Rides comprises two parts: Firstly, the Trek Rides app that users download; secondly, a backend computing platform that uses advanced software-powered intelligence to perform calculations in real-time in order to match passengers to the right vehicles and to ensure minimum travel duration and accurate estimated times of arrival, even when there are different destinations for different people on the ride.

How is Trek Rides different from other services such as van-pooling or shared shuttle buses?

A. Unlike on-demand shuttle buses, Trek Rides do not have fixed routes, stops or timetables. It also differs from van-pooling services, which may offer door-to-door trips for commuters, but would require advanced booking and do not guarantee arrival and journey times because it does not intelligently route and dispatch the vehicles. While on-demand shuttle buses and van-pooling services do use apps to interact with drivers, they do not have the intelligent routing software at the backend to guide drivers to use the best routes to pick up and drop their passengers. In other words, the app on these services is used primarily by commuters only to order the trip and to track where the vehicle is at any time.

Who operates Trek Rides?

A. Trek Rides is operated by Asia Mobiliti, a Malaysian transit technology software company and its partner, a licensed transport service provider operating a professional fleet of vehicles and trained drivers.

What kind of vehicles will be used for Trek Rides?

A. There will be a variety of vehicles used for Trek Rides. This could include a 10-seater van, an 18-seater shuttle bus, a multi-person vehicle (MPV), a 20-seater minibus, as well as a low floor, fully electric minibus.

Where and what time will Trek Rides operate during the pilot phase?

A. Trek Rides is currently operating in Puchong, Ampang & UM – Bangsar South. The DRT Service will run based on schedule as here below:

  • Puchong Zone – Operating hours from 7:00 AM – 9:00 PM daily
  • Ampang Zone – Operating hours from 7:00 AM – 9:00 PM daily
  • UM-Bangsar South Zone – Operating hours 7:00 AM – 9:00 PM daily
  • Hulu Kelang Zone – Operating hours 7:00 AM – 9:00 PM daily
  • UPM Serdang Zone – Operating hours 7:00 AM – 9:00 PM daily

Will there be other pilot areas in the near future? If so, where?

A. This will be the first phase of the pilot trial where the feedback gathered will be used to plan other routes in the future. Once this phase is completed, there will likely be other pilot areas introduced and announcements will be made in due course.

Who will benefit from this service?

A. This DRT service will benefit commuters from our community partners living and working in our Zones to benefit most from this service.

What other unique features do Trek Rides have that makes it a fully digitalised service?

A. Trek Rides uses “geofencing,” a virtual defined perimeter that allows a vehicle to serve a small enough area thereby ensuring commuters’ are able to get to their destinations on time. Trek Rides also uses “virtual stops” to enable commuters to be picked up and dropped off at a location within a geofenced area shown on the Trek Rides app. This means commuters only need to make short walks to where they want to be picked up and from where their destinations are, rather than having to wait at a designated, physical bus stop at a fixed time.

How much Trek Rides charges?

A. Trek Rides fee for our Zones are as per below;

  • Puchong Zone – RM 2 Per Ride
  • Ampang Zone – RM 2 Per Ride
  • UM-Bangsar South Zone – RM 1 Per Ride
  • Hulu Kelang Zone – RM 2 Per Ride
  • UPM Serdang Zone – RM 2 Per Ride

How do you pay for these services? Is it cashless or do you also accept cash?

A. We accept payment via e-Wallet (Touch N Go & GrabPay) & Credit Card (Visa & Master)

Safety and Protection

What kind of safety practices do i follow when on trek rides.

A. Commuters should adhere to the standard practices when riding on Trek Rides. This includes staying seated during the ride, wearing seatbelts whenever possible, and adhering to government-mandated Covid-19 SOPs guidelines for public transit.

Does the app have a quick emergency call button on the app for commuters?

A. Yes the app has such a button, which users can use to contact a saved emergency contact and the authorities such as the police. You may refer this link at checkout more details on how to make emergency call from Trek Rides App.

In the unlikely event that there is an accident while riding on Trek Rides, what can commuters do?

A. Commuters can contact number Trek Rides Customer Service should there be an accident and you will be guided as to what to do next. You can also speak to our professional fleet of drivers and they will advise you on what to do next.

Signing Up, During and After Trip

What do commuters need to do to use this service.

A. To sign up for this service, you’ll need a minimum of a smartphone that supports either Apple iOS or Android. You will also need to be at least 18-years-old to use this service.

What is the sign up process for Trek Rides?

A. You can sign up here . For further guidance, you may refer to our User Guide .

What happens after you’ve signed up?

A. After verification, you will receive an email guiding you on how to download the Trek Rides App, please note only registered and verified users will have access. Once the app has been downloaded, you can proceed to request a pick up at the nearest virtual stop to you. After walking to this virtual stop, the app will give an estimated time of arrival to your destination. When the vehicle arrives, just hop on board and enjoy the ride. When you reach your intended destination, just alight from your seat at the virtual stop nearest to your destination. Please view our User Guide for more information.

Can you change destinations after entering your initial destination?

A. One of the advantages of a DRT is that you can change your destination while on a ride, due to the demand-responsive nature of the service. That said, this feature will not yet be available during the pilot phase but eventually, such advanced features will be added into the service.

Currently in its first phase, the feature is accessible to users via the Trek Rides button (under Welfare & Other Services) on the Selangkah app. Clicking on the button will redirect users to the official Trek Rides mobile app to search for available rides. — Selangkah

Selangkah App has introduced Trek Rides, a demand-responsive transit (DRT) service for users to find shared rides to public transport services or shuttle services within certain localities.

Currently in its first phase, the feature is accessible to users via the Trek Rides button (under Welfare & Other Services) on the Selangkah app. Clicking on the button will redirect users to the official Trek Rides mobile app to search for available rides.

Users can choose from a series of pre-selected pick-up points and destinations.

The app states that it uses intelligent routing software to direct the user to a virtual pick-up point within walking distance and to plan their travel route.

Users will also be given an estimated time for both pickups and drop-offs. The app will also display the information of the vehicle picking up the passenger.

Trek Rides on its website said a variety of vehicles will be used for Trek Rides including a 10-seater van, a multi-person vehicle (MPV) and a 20-seater bus.

The DRT service is currently available in Puchong covering the LRT Bandar Puteri, LRT Taman Perindustrian, LRT IOI Puchong Jaya and LRT Bandar Kinrara 5 public transport area. It is also available at the UM – Bangsar South zone covering the LRT University area.

The operational hours for the shared ride services are from 7am to 9pm daily with fares listed as RM2 for the Puchong zone and RM1 for the Bangsar South zone.

The ride can be paid with cashless methods such as ewallet or a linked card within the app.

It is also available in Ampang covering the LRT Pandan Jaya, LRT Pandan Indah, LRT Cempaka, LRT Cahaya and MRT Cochrane public transport area. Trek Rides is also expected to expand to Hulu Kelang and Serdang in January 2024.

Selangkah Ventures said the new AI-powered feature aims to solve first/last-mile connectivity woes for public transport users. It collaborated with startup Asia Mobility Technologies on the solution.

“The integration of the Trek Rides service not only addresses the gap between public transport and smart mobility but also bolsters our aspiration for the Selangkah app to evolve into a super-app,” Selangkah Ventures CEO Tengku Iesta Tengku Alaudin said in a statement.

Selangkah was first introduced in 2021 as a contact-tracing app during the Covid-19 pandemic. Since then, it has evolved into an app to connect users to various initiatives under the Selangor state government.

Trek Rides Launches Third DRT Zone in Gombak

Trek Rides Launches Third DRT Zone in Gombak

Known as the Selayang Baru zone, the Demand-Responsive Transit service is free to use for three months, aimed at improving first-and-last-mile connectivity

Malaysia’s leading mobility-as-a-service company, Asia Mobility Technologies Sdn Bhd (“Asia Mobiliti”), today launches its newest Trek Rides zone in Gombak, Selangor.

Known as Demand-Responsive Transit (DRT), the service called Trek Rides will cover key residential, commercial and public service areas. This includes Kg Laksamana, Kg Nakhoda, Wira Damai, Kg Sungai Tua, two public transit stations – KTM Batu Caves and Dataran Bandar Baru Selayang – with a total of 71 pick-up and drop-off locations. Trek Rides is being offered for free beginning 12 June 2023 for three months with the support of the office of the Member of Parliament for Gombak.

“DRT is a reliable, affordable, efficient, and dynamic service that can benefit commuters on a sustainable basis,” said Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, the Chief Minister of Selangor and Member of Parliament for Gombak.

“We are excited to partner with Asia Mobiliti for first-and-last-mile connectivity as the state government’s mission has always been to promote public transportation usage amongst its residents, and we are planning to introduce more zones across Selangor in the near future.”

Ramachandran Muniandy, CEO and Co-founder of Asia Mobiliti said, “We are pleased to work with the state government of Selangor to introduce the concept of DRT with Trek Rides to commuters and residents in Bandar Baru Selayang, a bustling residential and commercial area that is underserved by public transit.

“Following the successful launches in Bandar Puteri, Puchong and the Universiti Malaya-Bangsar South zones, we are expanding the coverage areas across Klang Valley, one zone at a time.

Trek Rides Launches Third DRT Zone in Gombak

“Our goal is to provide a digital, reliable, cost-effective and convenient service that meets commuters’ first- and-last-mile needs, which has been a perennial challenge in Malaysia. We believe that solving the first-and-last-mile journey with DRT will effect behavioural change that will result in increased modal share for public transport in our cities,” Ram said.

The service will be available daily from 8:00am to 8:00pm with two 15-seater transit vans during the free rides period.

DRT is a new form of public transit service powered by software, providing a digital experience for passengers and drivers. The system responds to multiple bookings within a predefined zone or route and optimises the dispatching of vehicles through the use of intelligent algorithms that factors in waiting time, travel time and traffic conditions.

The advanced dispatching and routing capabilities enables shared-rides services without compromising on estimated time of pick-up and drop-off, bringing unparalleled journey planning reliability for public transport users.
