Best of Ireland – Our friends recommended Trafalgar and it didn’t disappoint! We had a wonderful experience touring all over Ireland. We also had our wedding anniversary and Trafalgar bought a nice present for us. Liam, our tour director, was knowledgeable about every place we were visiting and passing through. He had a wonderful sense of humor and kept the group engaged at all times. We had a great environment. Shane, our driver, made us feel safe throughout the entire trip. Our favorite part of the tour was the Cliffs of Moher! All the extra activities were ideal to know more about Ireland’s culture and history. We had wonderful weather and we were able to enjoy Ireland’s beautiful scenery the utmost.

The Celtic Voyage - Multi-Day - Small Group Tour of Ireland

The Celtic Tour by Wild N Happy went way beyond my expectations! It was a complete delight to be enlightened by such knowledgeable, native guides of Gaelic Irish culture who authentically could share the stories of the historical unfolding of Irish history. I would only trust driving to the tour guide along those narrow and windy roads to awesome ancient historical landmarks along the amazing western coastline. Our guide knew the best spots to go to, depending on what your desire was to explore in the quaint villages and gave us plenty of time to assimilate. The Tour provided diversity, a well thought-out mix of outdoor and indoor activities, lots of surprising stops along the way, and everyone seemed fulfilled and reluctant to end this highly recommended Celtic adventure!

Overall good...don't like showers over tub..dangerous...slip mats essential. Gresham Dublin confusing because of the Reno's. Our tour leader and driver were excellent, but the relief driver for our visit to Dingle was downright scary.

3-Day Blarney Castle, Kilkenny & Irish Whiskey Small-Group Tour from Dublin

We really enjoyed our tour. Our tour guide, Marty, was terrific! He shared the history of each area we visited, the meaning of Irish words, fantastic pub/restaurant and museum recommendations and even had alternate plans for us when the Jameson Whiskey tour was canceled because of record rainfall and flooding (we got a refund too!). Our accommodations were always close to City Centre, clean, comfortable and had a delicious breakfast. It was a great experience!

Best of the West

Our guide was very knowledgeable and we had a very good schedule. Would have liked the maps and info PRIOR to the tour taking off. Maybe some local music to support the bus rides. More info on where our stops were and what there was there (if they only take euros or if they take cards etc)

3-Day West Coast Explorer Small-Group Tour from Dublin

I had a blast on this tour! It had a sweet mix of Irish towns, culture, and some seriously breathtaking nature. Stephanie, our guide, was awesome - she had all the inside knowledge at every spot, making the trip super fun. This was my first time on a tour like this, but I'm definitely down for more in different places!

Irish Elegance (Small Groups, 8 Days)

Traveling with Greg was an unexpected delight! I had imagined a guide who would point things out and give some history or information. What I didn’t expect was a funny and vibrant young man who was willing to go the extra mile at any and every opportunity. From spurring us on to sing “Here Cones the Sun” every single morning as we drove off (and in our case in Ireland it actually worked!) to walking the full length of the bus to ask each of us if we had questions or thoughts, several times a day, to providing us with what he called “little flourishes”—a refreshing mint after we had been walking, or a sample of Butler’s chocolate or tastes of different local beverages— all of it thoughtful and enriching to the trip. His love of music kept us energized as he played songs in the bus to match different locales. He took requests! He gauged the overall feel of the group regularly, getting us off on the road earlier on some days, making sure we had some moments of relaxation to revive before the next stop, or adding in extra things along the way if he heard different members chatting about something. He was quite willing to take hold of someone’s cell phone and capture photos of them at key points. He was consistently upbeat even in some tough moments, like having to chase after a couple who were waylaid for 4 days from catching the tour through no fault of their own and who were terribly sad about it. Greg made sure to save as many events for them as he could and to enfold them into the group so they felt welcomed and supported as soon as they finally caught up with us. I feel that Greg was a fabulous person to travel with and cannot recommend him highly enough.

The entire trip was wonderful, very well organized, and satisfying. Peter Flood was an excellent tour guide. He was as knowledgeable as could be, funny, and helpful; and really seems to love what he does.

The tour went as planned. The guide was excellent. Recommendations would be to extend the time to 8 or 9 days to maximize two days in Lahinch and Galway to experience more of the culture and scenery. One night in each of the cities does not allow for to that experience.

Arriving in Dublin City

As Ireland's capital and largest city, Dublin is the first destination for the majority of international visitors to Ireland. All of our Ireland tours start here and we will always provide options for you to be met at the airport.

If you choose to arrive a few days early

For those who choose to arrive a few days early for their Ireland tour, there is a growing number of public transport options in the city. These include an international airport and two train stations. The city is also the focal point of Ireland's motorway network (car hire is available at the airport but advance booking is recommended).

Dublin Airport

Almost everyone who arrives on a visit to Dublin from abroad will arrive by plane (though some self-drive visitors from the UK may arrive by Ferry). Dublin Airport is located just 10km (6 miles) from Dublin City Centre and is accessible by both the M50 and M1 motorways. It is made up of two terminals. Visitors arriving from the USA and Canada will be arriving at Terminal Two.

Terminal One

Short-haul flights. Served by Ryanair, British Airways, Germanwings, Iberia, Lufthansa, Norwegian, SAS and Air France.

Terminal Two

Long-haul flights. Served by American Airlines, US Airways, Delta, Air Canada and Aer Lingus. Recent additions to Terminal 2's roster include United Airlines, Etihad and Emirates.

Airport Shuttle Bus Services

There are bus services available to and from both terminals, provided by Aircoach , Airlink , Dublin Bus and GoBus . Aircoach will bring you to multiple stops in Dublin City, including O'Connell Street and Grafton Street. They also operate routes to and from Cork City (€19- Adult, Single, 3hrs) and Belfast City (€12- Adult, Single, 2hr 20mins). You can follow their distinctive blue signs from the arrivals hall in both terminals. GoBus offers a route from Dublin Airport to and from Galway City (€18- Adult, Single, 2hrs 30mins). A ticket to Dublin City Centre from Dublin Airport costs €6 (Single)/ €11.50 (Return). Dublin Bus also operates a service between Dublin Airport and Dublin City for a similar price.

Like all international airports, there is a large number of taxis available outside both terminals at all times. To travel to the city centre by taxi will cost between €30-€40.

Currently, there is no direct railway link between Dublin Airport and Dublin City.

If you are already in Ireland and want to visit the capital, then rail is certainly a viable option (though buses are a great alternative). The two main train stations in Dublin City are Heuston Station and Connolly Station. Heuston Station is located to the west of the city centre, close to the Guinness Storehouse. Connolly Station is found to the east of the city centre, close to Trinity College and Dublin Port. Both stations connect Dublin with Cork to the south, Galway to the west and Belfast to the north. The bus that connects Hueston and Connolly Stations to Dublin Airport is the number 747 (see here for more details) .

The DART is an electric train systems that runs along the coast of the Irish Sea, from North County Dublin to County Wicklow (South of Dublin). The DART runs every 15 minutes during peak hours (7am to 9am and 5pm to 9pm weekdays) and every 30 minutes off peak. To travel the full route of the DART one-way, from Howth in North Dublin to Greystones in County Wicklow, will cost €6.

Tram Service

The LUAS (Irish for speed), Dublin's tram system has been in operation since 2004. Its Red (Northside) and Green (Southside) lines spread across Dublin City. Ticket prices vary depending on how many zones you plan on passing, but you can expect to pay €3 to get from one side of the city to the other (one-way).

A convenient and cost effective way of paying LUAS and DART fares, as well as a number of other public transport services in Dublin City, is the use of a Leap Card .

Most people who visit Dublin City would usually advise against driving there. The traffic in the city centre can come to a stand-still for large parts of the day and you have to travel miles outside the city before you can find any free parking. If driving to Dublin city is a must you can find more information on parking here .

The main bus terminal of Dublin City is Busáras Central Station . Located on the eastern edge of the city centre, on the same street as Connolly Train Station. Busáras Central Station is the terminal for all state-run buses coming in and out of Dublin City, both locally and across Ireland.

There are also a number of private bus companies that operate in and out of Dublin City. Their pick-up and drop-off points differ from one another and depend on what part of Ireland you are going to/coming from. The majority will have pick-up and drop-off points at Dublin Airport.

Dublin Port operates ferries across the Irish Sea to Liverpool in England, Holyhead in Wales and, during Summer and Christmas, to Douglas on the Isle of Man. The ferry companies that operate to and from Dublin Port are Irish Ferries, Steam Packet, P&O Ferries and Seatruck Ferries.

Getting to the City Centre

Dublin Port is connected with Dublin City Centre via Dublin Bus ( the number 53 bus ). Bus fares are payable with coins (Euro), smart cards or pre-paid tickets. There is a plentiful number of taxis outside Dublin Port at most times of the day, expect to pay in the region of €9 to €12 for a taxi to the city centre. The Luas Red Line tram operates 7 days a week and is located on East Wall Road, opposite the entrance to Dublin Port, and a one-way ticket to the city centre costs €2.

Getting around Dublin

Throughout your tour, all your transport is provided unless you choose use local services to explore more widely during your free time. For those exploring Dublin independently before or after their guided tour of Ireland, here are the three main options for local transport throughout Dublin City.

Dublin Bus Services

Dublin City and its suburbs are well catered for in terms of bus services. The state-owned Dublin Bus company, founded in 1987, has a reputation of being reliable, plentiful and not too harsh on the pocket.

It is always advisable to check their timetable and stop locations if you are planning a bus journey, especially if you are new to the city. For more information, visit their website...

NOW Dublin Bikes

Dublin City runs a bike hire scheme, sponsored by a subscription-based TV service NOW. It is a cost-effective and quick way to get around the city. There are 109 stations in total, each within close proximity to another.

A user must first take out a subscription, which allows an unlimited number of rentals. A long-term subscription is €35, a 3-Day ticket costs €5. Under 30 minutes is free and prices only go up after this. For longer rides, it is advisable to get to a terminal in under 30 minutes and take a new bike. Dublin City taxis are also known as hackney carriages, the kind that you can flag down on the street or find at a taxi rank. There are also private hire vehicles, which are not licensed to "ply for hire" or stand in a taxi rank and can only be booked in advance.

Leap Visitor Card

The Leap Visitor Card is a prepaid pass that allows you to travel on all Dublin Bus and Airlink 747 buses, as well as Dublin's Luas and DART for a whole 72 hours (3 days) from its first use.

Just hold your card to the Touch On Leap Card Validator as you board the bus. If you're travelling on the DART or LUAS, remember to Touch Off when you alight or leave the station and the journey is registered on your Leap Card. It's that easy.

If you're a foreign exchange student you can get a Leap Trainee Card through your language school or directly from Dublin Bus, so you can hop on to the Luas, DART, Iarnród Éireann’s short-hop zone and Dublin Bus at your convenience. That means you can use it to explore Dublin far and wide, including coastal villages, suburban towns and everything in between.

You can buy a Leap Visitor Card online and get it delivered to your home before you travel or pick up your card when you arrive from a number of different agents in Dublin.

iLink smartcard

If you're travelling around Northern Ireland, you can use an iLink smartcard. Similar to the Leap Card, iLink gives you unlimited daily, weekly, and monthly bus and rail travel.

The iLink smartcard is available for Metro, NI Railways and Ulsterbus services within five zones. You can also top up your card at selected stations. Read this handy user guide for information on full iLink services.

Newgrange is approximately 5000 years old. It is Ireland's greatest Neolithic Passage Tomb, world famous for its annual Winter Solstice and home to some of Europe's richest collections of megalithic art.

Information on the Hill Of Tara

The historic seat of Irish kings, it is thought that over 140 kings reigned in Ireland in the name of Tara. In ancient mythology, Tara was revered as a dwelling of the gods.

We were on the bus on a day with lashing rain, but that didnt ruin our day. Its a lovely old bus and we enjoyed a little trip around dublin under our blankets, while Ella did a wonderful job telling fun little stories about the different places. There was all the tea, coffee and hot chocolate you could drink (just remember, there is no toilet on the bus) with your scones and cakes, the only thing we would have loved is a bit more savoury treats instead of sweet. European cities hope jet-setting Taylor Swift fans will splash the cash for Eras tour

The superstar arrives in Europe next month – and Swifties, tourist boards and venues are already preparing

T im Brown, 44, and his wife, Marcella, 34, may not consider themselves bona fide “Swifties”, but when it was announced last June that Taylor Swift would be visiting their corner of the globe this summer they could not resist joining the scramble for a pair of tickets.

A post-pandemic appetite for live music events has fuelled huge worldwide interest in the American singer-songwriter’s Eras tour, which surpassed in $1bn sales in November to become the highest-grossing series of concerts in history.

The pop culture event of the summer will arrive in Europe next month, kicking off in Paris on 9 May and wrapping up in London on 20 August with 49 dates in between in Sweden, Ireland, Portugal, Germany, Poland, Austria, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

The unique nature of the tour’s ticketing system, which was tweaked after a number of hitches last year, means there will be a mass movement of travelling fans who will not only be Swiftie in affiliation but swift-like in their willingness to travel across the continent.

In expectation of intense demand, Ticketmaster introduced a pre-registration system that rewarded some early applicants with access codes to the ticket sale proper, via staggered windows for each city.

Notionally designed to prioritise genuine fans over “scalpers” – people who buy and resell tickets for a quick profit – the pre-sales system also meant many fans registered for tickets in multiple destinations across Europe to increase their chances.

Tim and Marcella, who live in Norwich, registered not just for the nearest concerts – in London and Liverpool – but also in Amsterdam and Lisbon. The pair got lucky with a pair of €91 tickets in the Portuguese capital and have turned the trip into a weekend break. “I used to live in Lisbon so I thought why not kill two birds with one stone,” Tim said. “We booked ourselves flights and four nights’ accommodation the same day.” They are far from alone.

Katie Soo, the chief business officer of DICE, a rival ticketing company, said: “The excitement and uncertainty inherent in the ticket-purchasing process might have inadvertently incentivised fans to apply for tickets in multiple cities, thereby increasing the likelihood of travelling across Europe to attend the concerts.”

Hotel prices

Several European cities have already reported a sharp rise in demand for hotel and short-term rental accommodation over the summer, when the Swift hurricane will arrive. In Edinburgh, Liverpool and Cardiff, rooms at the Travelodge chain around Swift’s June dates have been sold out since August 2023, a month after tickets for the shows went on sale.

In Paris, where fans anticipate Swift to debut an updated version of the Eras show with songs from the new Tortured Poets Department album, 80% of hotels and apartments listed on Booking.com are already full up. In Warsaw on 2 August, only 9% of hotels listed on the same site are still available.

Not all of the 18 cities covered by the Eras tour are obvious tourism destinations. From 17-19 July, Swift will play three concerts at the 65,000-capacity home ground of the football club Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen in Ruhr valley, western Germany. The city’s less-than-familiar name prompted one US chatshow host to quip that “the place might not even exist”.

Yet even in Germany’s rust belt the influx of Swift fans is temporarily transforming the hotel market: any two-bedroom apartments that remain available are going for €800-2,000 a night, with cheaper accommodation available only in surrounding cities that are just as off the usual tourist track as Gelsenkirchen, such as Essen, Bochum or Herne.

Cities with stricter rules on allowing Airbnb-style holiday lets and a more limited stock of short-term rental apartments are reporting a particularly marked increase in rates during Swift’s visit, with about 30% year-on-year spikes in rental rates in Cardiff, Edinburgh and Milan, according to AirDNA, a data analytics company specialising in the short-term rentals market.

Of all the tour’s European stops, Vienna is experiencing the most notable impact on its rental market, with booking rates for the nights of Swift’s concerts recorded in February 44% higher than at the same point the previous year. By the end of March the number of nights booked in the Austrian capital for the length of Swift’s stay in the second week of August had risen by 430% compared with the same period in 2023.

When Luke Tilden’s wife, Tatjana, suggested last summer that the couple buy their 13- and 15-year-old daughters, Lena and Maya, tickets to a Taylor Swift gig for Christmas, the 53-year-old Briton initially waved it off. “There’s no chance in hell we’d get a ticket without paying through our noses, I thought,” said Tilden, who works as an interpreter at the European parliament in Brussels.

But after pre-registering for tickets in London, Paris and Munich, the Tildens got unexpectedly lucky for four tickets in southern Germany and have turned the concert visit into a mini-holiday: “We’ll visit the in-laws in Bavaria, enjoy the countryside, do a bit of hiking.”

The hope in cities across Europe is that this will be replicated on a massive scale, with fans’ excitement translating into generous spending sprees on food, shopping and leisure. In Stockholm, for example, where authorities are expecting 159,000 visitors to arrive from 135 countries in mid-May, the chamber of commerce has forecast a spending boost of €50m. “We hope the whole town will buzz from the Eras tour,” said Tomas Andersson, a spokesperson for the Swedish capital’s tourism board.

Whether fans will necessarily act like ordinary tourists, however, is up for debate. “Pop-culture tourists do not necessarily care about traditional buildings and authentic restaurants,” said Maria Lexhagen, a professor at the European Tourism Research Institute, Mid Sweden University.

“Joining up with other fan communities is stronger motivation, as is the idea that they might get closer to the stars themselves. Many of them will map out where Swift is spending her time in the city – they will seek out seemingly marginal but meaningful places like back alleys or coffee shops.” Venues may be hoping for a repeat of Sydney in February, when Swift swept into an unassuming Italian restaurant in the suburbs and sent its name into global media headlines.

In Stockholm the tourism board said it was expecting bookshops and secondhand clothes stores, rather than museums and royal palaces, to attract most of the arriving visitors. Some venues are being proactive: one restaurant within walking distance of the multipurpose Friends Arena in the Solna municipality is putting on a “Taylor Swift brunch experience” with a karaoke stage; the waterfront nightclub Debaser is hosting a pre-concert party on 16 May, an all-ages all-day party with a Swift-themed quiz on 19 May and an afterparty the day after.

Environment

As the Swift circus rolls across the continent, the transport infrastructure of urban centres will also be put to the test. Around the tour’s three-night stop in Dublin at the end of June, Irish Rail has announced additional late-night services to Cork and Limerick to meet an expected increase in demand. Extra tram and bus services are likely to be announced nearer the time.

Unlike rail operators, most airlines do not have capacity to charter additional flights. Due to yield management – airlines adjusting prices based on expected demand – a scramble for airborne journeys into cities that host the Eras tour is more likely to result in more expensive tickets rather than additional flights.

Officials at Lisbon airport said no additional flights had been chartered around Swift’s concerts on 24 and 25 May but that demand would probably be reflected in slightly higher load factors. A spokesperson for Amsterdam Schiphol said general aviation slots could be requested at short notice but nothing out of the ordinary had been logged so far.

Calculating the environmental impact of the tour with any certainty was difficult, experts said. “We can expect that some Swift fans will travel a long way to see one, if not several, shows across Europe”, said Stefan Gössling, a professor of tourism at Linnaeus University in Kalmar, Sweden. “But measuring the environmental impact of these trips is extremely difficult – it would involve a lot of guesswork.”

This did not mean the carbon footprint was negligible. “Every flight taken by a person adds to demand and hence influences supply considerations,” Gössling said. “The greater the demand, the more aircrafts are in service.”

The pop star’s carbon footprint is easier to estimate. Swift owns two jets by the French manufacturer Dassault, whose journeys are trackable. During the 2023 leg of the Eras tour, Swift’s planes spent 166 hours crisscrossing the US in about 75 individual journeys, though it is possible they were used by people other than the singer.

According to data available through the open-access aviation tracker ADS-B exchange, Swift’s jets caused carbon emissions of about 2,830 tonnes of CO 2 equivalent over the course of the US Eras tour – about 1,700 times the annual contribution of an average person.

A spokesperson for Swift told US media last year that in advance of the tour’s start in March 2023, the pop star bought more than double the carbon credits needed to offset all tour travel. Carbon offset credits are tradable certificates that allow purchasers to compensate for emissions by investing in environmental projects that claim to reduce carbon emissions, though recent studies have questioned the efficacy of these schemes.
