Kenya eTA for U.S. Citizens

Most foreign nationals must obtain a Kenyan eTA , including visitors holding a U.S. passport.

Thankfully, the process is simple . U.S. citizens are eligible to apply for the electronic travel authorization (eTA) for Kenya entirely online, from anywhere in the world.

Find more information below regarding the application process, the Kenya eTA requirements for American citizens, and everything you need to know to secure a Kenyan visa waiver from the U.S.

Do US Citizens Need a Visa for Kenya?

No, Kenya has now eliminated all visas for foreign visitors. Citizens of the United States of America no longer need to apply for a Kenya visa for short-term trips to the country.

However, American citizens must still have authorization to enter Kenya.

Fortunately, Americans can request a Kenyan eTA online in just a few minutes.

Do Americans need a Kenyan eTA?

Yes, the eTA is a requirement for US passport holders visiting Kenya. You must register online for the eTA before you make the journey to the African country.

You will not be allowed to board a flight to Kenya from the US or cross the Kenyan border without a valid eTA.

Kenyan eTA from the United States: Requirements for Americans

There are some requirements travelers must meet to obtain their Kenya eTA for American citizens:

  • Email account to receive their eTA
  • Digital photograph taken within the last 6 months
  • Basic travel itinerary
  • Return ticket or proof of onward travel

Kenya eTA Application for US Passport Holders

Travelers must fill out the Kenya eTA application for U.S. citizens with the required information, which includes personal details, passport information, travel plans, and a few security questions.

Afterward, visitors must submit their application and wait approximately 1 to 3 days to receive their approved eTA in their email inbox.

How Long Can U.S. Citizens Stay in Kenya with the eTA?

The Kenyan eTA permits a stay of up to 90 days .

If eTA holders wish to stay longer than 90 days, there is an option to extend the stay at an Immigration Office in Kenya. It is often easier to simply leave the country for a few days, apply online for a new eTA, and return.

Travelers are advised to print out a copy of their eTA in case the immigration officer requires it upon arrival.

Can US Citizens Get a Visa on Arrival in Kenya?

The Kenyan government announced that as of January 1, 2021, all Kenyan visas have become electronic and must be applied for online.

From the start of 2024, all visas have been replaced by the eTA .

This means that visa on arrival services have been discontinued for U.S. citizens and all other foreign nationals.

What vaccines do American citizens need for Kenya?

There are no mandatory vaccinations for American citizens. The only case, in which U.S. nationals are required to provide proof of vaccination for Kenya is when they have recently visited a yellow fever high-risk area. In this case they should show proof that they were vaccinated at least 10 days before arriving.

In all other cases, American visitors are strongly encouraged to get in touch with their physician 6-10 weeks before traveling to discuss recommended vaccinations for Kenya .

Embassy Registration for U.S. Citizens

U.S. travelers can register with the STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) system through their Electronic Travel Authorization application. This program registers the traveler with the U.S. Embassy in Kenya.

Thanks to the Embassy Registration Service, U.S. citizens in Kenya can receive important updates and information from the American embassy or consulate that is closest to them.

Registering with the Embassy Registration comes with the following advantages :

  • Staying up to date with the latest safety alerts and security situations in Kenya
  • Providing the U.S. embassy in Kenya with your contact information for easy communications and traceability in case of an emergency
  • Faster communication with friends and family back home in case of emergency

It is a simple and effective way of leaving with greater peace of mind .

Kenya Will Be Visa-Free for Travelers From 2024

Aerial panorama shot

If you have your eyes set on island-hopping throughout the Lamu Archipelago or venturing on some of the most thrilling wildlife safaris in the New Year, we have good news for you: travel to Kenya is about to get a little bit easier.

Beginning January 2024, Kenya is dropping visa requirements for all visitors, regardless of nationality, President William Ruto announced this week.

“It shall no longer be necessary for any person from any corner of the globe to carry the burden of applying for a visa to come to Kenya,” President Ruto said at a December 12 event in Nairobi to celebrate the 60-year anniversary of Kenya's independence.

Instead, all visitors will be required to register for electronic travel authorization prior to visiting Kenya, Ruto said.

While details of the new electronic travel authorization have yet to be announced, the process is expected to be similar to ETA systems currently utilized by the US, UK, and Canada, Sunit Sanghrajka, CEO of Alluring Africa tells Condé Nast Traveler. The application will likely only take a few minutes with approval sent via email shortly after submission, he says.

Digitized immigration systems have become more widespread in recent years. Perhaps most notably is the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), anticipated to launch in Spring 2025 after a series of delays. “In our lifetime we will see more natural, efficient, and non-invasive ways to cross borders, all while being more secure both for the destination and the traveler," says Armand Arton, CEO of Arton Capital and creator of the Passport Index .

Kenya's decision to scrap visa requirements is “another example of recent efforts by African Union countries to boost their economies through eliminating frictions on travel," adds Arton. Gambia , Benin, and Seychelles have all waived visa restrictions for African nationals (with Rwanda soon following suit), helping to facilitate free movement within the African continent—of the likes of Europe's Schengen Area.

Elsewhere, countries like Mongolia and Indonesia have also announced relaxed visa restrictions following the COVID-19 pandemic with the hopes of reviving international tourism.

In Kenya, eliminating the hassle of visa applications will make it easier for tourists from around the world to take more impromptu trips (instead of needing to plan farther in advance), Sanghrajka tells Traveler. While the new electronic authorization system will help facilitate travel from key markets such as the US, it will be a “game-changer” for travelers from countries that have a more difficult time applying for electronic visas under the current system, he says.

According to President Ruto, Kenya's commitment to become a visa-free nation sends “a simple message to humanity: welcome home."

Do you need a visa to visit Kenya?

Everything you need to know about getting a visa for Kenya before the trip of a lifetime © PeopleImages.com - Yuri A / Shutterstock

Before you book that dream safari trip to the Masai Mara , start planning beach time in Mombasa or working out which of Nairobi ’s cool bars you want to enjoy a cold beer at, make sure you’ve got your visa to visit Kenya figured out.

The good news is a tourist visa for Kenya is easy to obtain for many nationalities, and most are issued promptly after an online application. We've got everything you need to know about Kenya visa applications, including costs, the documents you need, and which countries require a visa.

Do I need a visa for Kenya?

Most nationalities (Category 2) need to  apply for an eVisa online before arriving in Kenya. Some nationalities are exempt and do not require a visa to enter, which is classified as Category 1, and a small number in Category 3 require referred visas, meaning a trip to the local Kenyan embassy before arrival.

The President of Kenya, William Ruto, recently announced a plan to end all visa requirements for visitors from other African countries by 2024.

Two people looking out of a Jeep Safari in Kenya, Africa

Who can visit Kenya visa-free?

Citizens of a small number of countries don’t need a visa to enter Kenya. Check the official comprehensive eligibility list , which includes some Caribbean and African nations and countries such as Cyprus, Fiji and Singapore. Travelers under 16 are often exempt but check directly for specific visa requirements for your nationality.

How do I apply for a tourist visa for Kenya?

Apply for a tourist visa through Kenya’s official eVisa website . Set up an account with a username and password, and keep it handy because you can log in to see your application status. You'll need to provide your travel itinerary, and you’ll have to upload a recent color photo taken in the last six months.

Give yourself enough time before you travel to complete the application because you might need to supply details of where you’re staying. Although the website says visas are issued within 48 hours, we recommend giving yourself a buffer in case of any delays. After submitting, some applicants might be asked to provide extra information about their stay or their hosts.

The visa service says you’ll receive email confirmation of your application or payment, but this isn’t always the case – don’t panic if you don’t get anything via email. Instead, log in with your username and password to check the status of your visa. You can also check the dedicated Verify an eVisa portal.

When your visa is issued, print off a couple of copies (one in color) to take with you, and download the PDF so you have a digital copy saved to your phone.

Kenyan market stalls on the side of the Nairobi Highway (A2).

How much does a tourist visa for Kenya cost?

The standard visa is the single-entry visa and it costs US$51. All online payments are taken in US dollars. You can use this to enter Kenya once for business, tourism, medical or other reasons. The single-entry visa is valid for three months from the date of issue.

Your passport needs to have at least six months’ validity from the date of entry, and you must have a return ticket.

Kenya also offers a multiple-entry visa for US$101, which is great if you’re planning at least two trips to Kenya in a year. It’s valid for three to 12 months from the date of issue. Multiple-entry visas sometimes require more paperwork, so some travelers prefer to apply for a single-entry visa each time, however Kenya’s visa service is getting better and faster online.

Does Kenya have a transit visa for short stays?

If you’re in Kenya for less than 72 hours and want to leave the airport, you don’t need a full visa. You can apply for a transit visa instead, which costs US$21. If your flight connects directly and you’re not leaving the airport, you don’t need a visa for Kenya at all.

If you’re also visiting Rwanda and Uganda, look into the East African Tourist Visa  (US$101).

Can I extend my visa to stay in Kenya longer?

You can extend your visa for 90 days by applying for the Visitor's Pass Extension via the Department of Immigration Services . Create an account, and after submitting your application, print out the form, sign it and take it to the Immigration Counter at Nyayo House in Nairobi for processing, along with your passport and original visa document.

Does Kenya offer a working holiday visa?

Kenya does not have a working holiday visa. Instead, you’ll need a work permit from the Department of Immigration Services. It’s illegal for any foreigner without a valid work permit to be employed in Kenya, including volunteering and self-employed work.

If you’re planning to volunteer or have an internship or other work placement, ask the host organization or company for advice on the correct work permit.

The East African Tourist Visa is an option

The  East African Tourist Visa  is a handy option if you’re planning on visiting Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda. This multiple-country tourist visa costs US$101 and is valid for three months from the date of issue.

You can apply online. Once it’s issued, print out your eVisa to show to immigration officials at your first port of entry, where you’ll receive an East Africa visa sticker for your stay.

Yes, US citizens can travel to Kenya. However, because of security concerns and the ongoing global health situation, regularly checking for the latest information is advisable. The US Department of State currently has a Level 2 advisory for US travelers to Kenya, recommending increased caution in Kenya due to risks of crime, terrorism, civil unrest, and kidnapping.

There are higher-level advisories in place for some parts of the country as well. Americans are instructed not to travel to certain Kenya-Somalia border counties and coastal areas because of terrorism and kidnapping, and to areas of Turkana County because of crime. Travel should also be reconsidered for parts of Nairobi due to crime and kidnapping, and for parts of Laikipia County due to criminal incursions and security operations.

While in the country, travelers should monitor local media to keep informed of any issues that may affect their travels.

To travel to Kenya, US citizens need a passport with at least two blank pages and a validity of six months. Additionally, US travelers must obtain Kenyan entry visas before departure. Though Kenyan visa applications are now exclusively issued electronically, travelers must bring a print out of the visa to present to Kenyan authorities on arrival.

No, a passport is necessary for US citizens to enter Kenya. Six months of passport validity are required.

There is no visa on arrival in Kenya. Kenyan visas are now exclusively issued electronically. The country has implemented a digital eVisa portal where travelers can apply for Kenyan eVisas. All visitors must obtain an eVisa before departing for Kenya. Once you receive your visa via email, you must print it out and bring the printout with you to present to authorities at the border.

Although US citizens require a visa, citizens from several countries can travel to Kenya visa-free, in addition to the following:

  • Children under 16 (except those who travel with an East Africa tourist visa)
  • People with a passport that is endorsed with a Kenyan work visa or reentry pass.
  • Travelers with Laissez-Passer issued by the UN, World Bank, or IMF traveling to Kenya on official business

Applying for a Kenyan eVisa is a straightforward online process. Visit the official Kenyan eVisa portal and fill out the application form for the appropriate visa. You will get your eVisa by email.

There are six different types of Kenyan visas you may apply for:

  • Single-entry visa: This visa is valid for three months from the date of issue for those traveling for business, tourism, or visiting family members and similar purposes. It requires details on the travel itinerary. Travelers who go to Kenya on business must also have a letter of invitation from a company.
  • Multiple-entry visa: This visa allows frequent entry to Kenya for business, tourism, medical, or other reasons. It takes 10 working days to process and is valid for 6–12 months.
  • Five-year multiple-entry visa: Available exclusively for US nationals who need to visit Kenya frequently, either for business or tourism. It takes 10 working days to process. Travelers should keep in mind that the visa is tied to their passport. If your passport expires before the 5-year term of your Kenyan visa, you will need to reapply.
  • Transit visa: This visa applies to travelers connecting through Kenya to other destinations for a period not exceeding 72 hours. Travelers with connecting flights who won’t leave the airport don’t need to apply for transit visas.
  • Courtesy visa: A courtesy visa is issued to diplomatic, official, and service passport holders traveling to Kenya on official duties or transiting through Kenya to a third country for official business.
  • East Africa tourist visa: A Joint Tourist Visa issued for travel to and within Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda for tourism, this visa requires that travelers first arrive in Kenya. The East Africa Visa Sticker is then issued at the point of entry in Kenya.

Though Kenyan eVisas usually take 48 hours to process, they can occasionally take longer. To avoid complications, travelers should apply for their single-entry eVisa around 10 days before their planned travel date. Those applying for the five-year multiple-entry visa are advised to apply sooner.

The price of a Kenyan visa for US citizens varies depending on the type of visa, and whether a visa is single-entry or multiple entry. The government of Kenya recently proposed raising fees for visas, so please check with the Kenyan government’s official website for current pricing data.

A single-entry Kenyan visa is valid for 90 days from the issue date.

Overstaying your visa in Kenya can result in penalties, including fines and possible deportation. It's essential to adhere to the conditions of your visa to avoid these complications.

No separate entry or exit form is required for travel to Kenya as of the current regulations. Your passport and visa will serve as your primary travel documents.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 2 Practice Enhanced Precautions travel health notice for Kenya due to global polio. Travelers should be up-to-date on their polio vaccines.

While Kenya has lifted travel restrictions and no longer requires a PCR test or proof of COVID-19 vaccination, the CDC recommends that all international travelers are up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccinations before going abroad. COVID-19 remains a risk in Kenya, and travelers are advised to take appropriate precautions.

Travelers arriving in Kenya who display flu-like symptoms must fill out the passenger locator form on the jitenge platform and take a COVID-19 antigen test upon arrival at their own cost. Those who test positive on a COVID-19 antigen test must take a PCR test at their own cost. If the result is positive, you will be required to self-isolate. Kenya’s Ministry of Health has approved select locations for COVID-19 self-isolation.

Vaccinations

Before traveling to Kenya, ensure you have proof of yellow fever immunization. Travelers are advised to be up-to-date with all vaccinations the US CDC recommends.

Prescriptions

Always carry your prescription medication in its original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Ensure the medication is legal to bring into Kenya.

Medical Records

Carrying your medical records is advisable, especially if you have a preexisting health condition.

Travelers should ensure they have adequate travel and medical insurance coverage to cover overseas medical costs, and medical evacuation should that be required.

Here are answers to common questions about traveling to Kenya.

Do I need to wear a mask in Kenya?

Masks are required in closed spaces and private facilities, such as public transportation, transport hubs, government buildings, offices and shopping markets. While mask-wearing is voluntary in public and open spaces, travelers may be advised to wear them, particularly in crowded places.

Are the restaurants and bars open in Kenya?

Yes. Kenya’s restaurants and bars are open for business, with regular operating hours restored.

Will my phone work in Kenya?

For most tourist destinations, the answer is yes. There is ample cell phone coverage in Kenya in the areas of the highest population and most popular tourist locations. Cell coverage is spotty to nonexistent in the north.

If your US phone is unlocked and supports the GSM network, then you can use your mobile phone in Kenya. Check with your mobile phone provider if you are unsure whether your phone fits these requirements.

If you plan to use your mobile phone, check your provider’s roaming rates for voice, text, and data. For unlocked phones, you can also purchase a local SIM card on arrival to avoid roaming charges. Another alternative is to buy a local phone to use while you travel in Kenya, as mobile phones are relatively inexpensive.

What kind of plugs do I need in Kenya?

Kenya uses type G plugs, with three rectangular prongs set in a triangle, as you would find in the UK. If traveling from the US, you will need a power plug adapter. The standard voltage is 240V, and the frequency is 50Hz, so you may need a power converter for devices that do not support dual voltage.

What should I wear in Kenya?

Wear comfortable, light clothing. Loose-fitting clothes that cover you are best to avoid mosquito bites. You should also wear mosquito repellent. For wildlife safaris, opt for neutral colors.

Can I smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol in Kenya?

Yes, but only in designated smoking areas and licensed establishments. Travelers are advised to adhere to local laws and respect the rules established by local authorities.

Is it safe for LGBTQ+ travelers in Kenya?

While there are registered LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations in the country, consensual same-sex activity is criminalized under local law. Same-sex activity is punishable by a maximum of 14 years in prison. Sexual relations between men are explicitly criminalized in a separate statute and punishable by up to 21 years in prison. Persons have been arrested under these laws, particularly suspected sex workers. Members of the LGBTQ+ community face widespread societal discrimination.

  • Nationals of VWP countries who have traveled to or been present in Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen on or after March 1, 2011 (with limited exceptions for travel for diplomatic or military purposes in the service of a VWP country).
  • Nationals of VWP countries who have traveled to or been present in Cuba on or after January 12, 2021 (with limited exceptions for travel for diplomatic or military purposes in the service of a VWP country).
  • Nationals of VWP countries who are also nationals of Cuba, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria.

Requirements for Using the Visa Waiver Program (VWP)

You must meet  all  the following requirements to travel to the United States on the VWP:

Travel Purpose Must be Permitted on a Visitor (B) Visa

The following are examples of activities permitted while in the United States on the VWP. In addition, transiting through the United States to other countries is generally permitted for VWP travelers.

  • consult with business associates
  • attend a scientific, educational, professional, or business convention or conference
  • attend short-term training (you may not be paid by any source in the United States with the exception of expenses incidental to your stay)

Travel Purposes Not Permitted on Visa Waiver Program – Examples:

  • study, for credit
  • work as foreign press, radio, film, journalists, or other information media
  • permanent residence in the United States

Must Be a Citizen or National of a VWP Designated Country *

You must be a citizen or national of the following countries *  to be eligible to travel to the United States under the VWP.

  • Czech Republic
  • Liechtenstein
  • Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • South Korea
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom**

**To be eligible to travel under the VWP, British citizens must have the unrestricted right of permanent abode in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man.

Each Traveler Must Have a Valid ESTA

In order to travel without a visa on the VWP, you must have valid Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) approval prior to boarding a U.S. bound air or sea carrier. ESTA is a web-based system operated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to determine eligibility to travel to the United States for tourism or business under the VWP. Visit the  ESTA webpage  on the CBP website for more information.

Updating Your ESTA

In most cases, your ESTA will be valid for two years.  You also must obtain a new ESTA if you: (1) receive a new passport, including an emergency or temporary passport; (2) change your name; (3) change your gender; (4) change your country of citizenship; or (5) need to change your responses to any of the “yes” or “no” questions on the ESTA application.

These individuals can apply for visas using regular appointment processes at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Consular sections overseas may be able to expedite your interview date if there is an urgent, unforseen situation such as a funeral, medical emergency, or school start date. For more information, please visit the website of the Embassy or Consulate Visa Section where you will interview.

If an individual who is exempt from the Act because of his or her diplomatic or military presence in one of the seven countries is denied ESTA, he or she may go to the  CBP website , or contact the  CBP information Center . The traveler may also apply for a nonimmigrant visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection strongly recommends that any traveler to the United States check his or her  ESTA status  prior to making any travel reservations or travelling to the United States. More information is available on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) website .

Have the Correct Type of Passport

You must have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after your planned departure from the United States (unless exempted by  country-specific agreements ). For families, each member of your family, including infants and children, must have a passport.

Sample Passport Image

In addition, you must have an e-passport to use the VWP. An e-passport is an enhanced secure passport with an embedded electronic chip. The chip can be scanned to match the identity of the traveler to the passport. E-Passports must be in compliance with standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). You can readily identify an e-passport, by a symbol on the cover. See the example below. More information about e-passports is available on the DHS website .

Passport with e-symbol

Emergency and Temporary Passports

If you use an   emergency or temporary passport to enter the United States on the VWP, the passport must be an e-passport. This includes VWP travelers who are transiting the United States.

More information on frequently asked questions about VWP can be found at the following websites:

  • DHS Visa Waiver Program Requirements
  • CBP Visa Waiver Program

May I apply for a visa instead of using the VWP?

Yes, you may apply for a visitor (B) visa if you prefer to do so or if you are not eligible for VWP travel. Additionally, you need to apply for a visa if you will be traveling on a private aircraft or other non-VWP approved air or sea carrier. Review the  approved carriers list . Also, if you intend to stay longer than 90 days, then you need to apply for a visa.

I was denied a visa under section 214(b). May I use the VWP?

A recent visa refusal for any reason could result in denial of ESTA authorization, additional review at the port of entry, or denial of admission to the United States. If you are uncertain if you qualify for VWP travel, you may apply for a visa.

Trips to Canada, Mexico, or nearby islands

If you are admitted to the United States under the VWP, you may take a short trip to Canada, Mexico, or a nearby island and generally be readmitted to the United States under the VWP for the remainder of the original 90 days granted upon your initial arrival in the United States. Therefore, the length of time of your total stay, including the short trip, must be 90 days or less. See the  CBP website . Citizens of VWP countries *  who reside in Mexico, Canada, or a nearby island are generally exempted from the requirement to show onward travel to another country *  when entering the United States. Learn more on the  CBP website .

How can a country* join the VWP?

A country *  must meet various requirements to be considered for designation in the Visa Waiver Program. Requirements include, but are not limited to:

  • enhanced law enforcement and security-related data sharing with the United States;
  • issuing e-passports;
  • having a visitor (B) visa refusal rate of less than three percent (for initial designation);
  • timely reporting of both blank and issued lost and stolen passports; and
  • maintenance of high counterterrorism, law enforcement, border control, and document security standards.

Designation as a VWP country *  is at the discretion of the U.S. government. Meeting the objective requirements of the VWP does not guarantee a country *  will receive VWP designation.

Entering the United States

An approved ESTA allows you to travel to a U.S. port-of-entry (generally an airport) and request permission to enter the United States, but an approved ESTA does not guarantee entry into the United States. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials at the port-of-entry have authority to permit or deny admission to the United States. Learn more on the  CBP website .

Extending your stay

If you enter the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, you are not permitted to extend your stay in the United States beyond the initial admission period. You must depart the United States on or before the date on your admission stamp when you entered the United States. See Extend Your Stay on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website .

Change of status

If you enter the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, you are not permitted to change status in the United States. See  Change My Nonimmigrant Status  on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website.

What if I am traveling to Guam or the Northern Mariana Islands?

Citizens of Australia, Brunei, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Nauru, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and the United Kingdom do not need a visa or ESTA to visit both Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands because of the Guam-CNMI Visa Waiver Program, though they must complete Form I-736 prior to travel.  People's Republic of China Passport holders also do not need a visa if they complete Form I-736 for temporary admission into the Northern Mariana Islands. For more information on the Guam-CNMI Visa Waiver Program,  click here

* With respect to all references to “country” or “countries” on this page, it should be noted that the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, Pub. L. No. 96-8, Section 4(b)(1), provides that “[w]henever the laws of the United States refer or relate to foreign countries, nations, states, governments, or similar entities, such terms shall include and such laws shall apply with respect to Taiwan.” 22 U.S.C. § 3303(b)(1). Accordingly, all references to “country” or “countries” in the Visa Waiver Program authorizing legislation, Section 217 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, 8 U.S.C. 1187, are read to include Taiwan. This is consistent with the United States’ one-China policy, under which the United States has maintained unofficial relations with Taiwan since 1979.

Kenya Goes Visa Free, Implements New Electronic Entry System for Travelers Instead

Here’s how to visit the east african country as of january 2024..

The new ETA requirement in Kenya is similar to systems that are already in place or forthcoming in European and North American countries.

In December 2023, Kenya made history by announcing that it would be the first African country to be visa-free for all travelers. “It shall no longer be necessary for any person from any corner of the globe to carry the burden of applying for a visa to come to Kenya,” Kenyan President William Ruto announced at an event on December 12, Kenya’s independence day.

Visa-free does not, however, mean document-free. In place of a single-entry visa, which previously cost U.S. visitors $50, international travelers must apply for an electronic travel authorization (ETA). Here’s what to know.

How to apply for an ETA to enter Kenya

As of January 2024, international visitors must apply for an ETA prior to departing for Kenya. The ETA is a semi-automated online system that determines whether visitors are eligible to enter Kenya. It costs $34 per visitor, including infants and children.

It is recommended that travelers apply for the ETA at least three days (and up to three months) prior to departure. The authorization is valid for a single entry and is specific to the flights and dates given in the application. It allows for a stay of up to 90 days.

Kenya’s official ETA website details the requirements for all visitors:

  • Valid passport for at least six (6) months after your planned date of arrival into Kenya, with at least one blank page
  • Selfie or passport photo that you upload on the website
  • Contact information, including email address and phone number
  • Details of your arrival and departure itinerary
  • Accommodation booking confirmation(s)
  • Credit card, debit card, or other means of payment

In addition, travelers coming for personal visits must submit the passport number (or number from another identity card) of their hosts. Those coming for business purposes must show an invitation letter from the company they are visiting.

Visitors must apply on the official ETA website. After submitting your application, you will receive an email confirming receipt of the application as well as the payment made. Within three working days, you will receive another email stating whether the immigration department has approved or rejected your application.

Assuming it is approved, print (or screenshot) the PDF attached in the email. It will need to be shown at all arrival and departure points in Kenya.

Why Kenya implemented the new ETA system

‘’The announcement that Kenya will ease visa requirements for travelers and the introduction of an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) presents a good opportunity to improve visitor numbers into Kenya,” Kenya Tourism Board’s Chief Executive Officer John Chirchir told AFAR in an email. “We tell our visitors Karibu Nyumbani , or ‘welcome home.’”

The primary benefit of the ETA for the Kenyan government is to digitize what was a burdensome paper process and, in so doing, collect data on visitors to the country.

In a statement, the principal secretary of Kenya’s Immigration and Citizen Services, Julius Bitok, compared the new ETA requirement in Kenya to similar systems that are already in place or forthcoming in European and North American countries.

There has, however, been substantial backlash to the change. Many people, including experts in Kenya’s hospitality industry , say the ETA is essentially a visa in another name. The initial rollout faced some logistical challenges, including website crashes and confusion among travelers.

Kenya’s director general of the Directorate of Immigration Services, Evelyn Cheluget, said in a statement at the beginning of January that the government hopes to enhance the efficiency of the ETA system in coming weeks. “We have been listening to feedback from our clients, and we’ve gone ahead to reduce the number of questions in the form that were causing stress,” she said.

“Easing travel requirements puts Kenya on a more level playing field with other countries,” added Chirchir. “The easing of requirements can send a positive message about Kenya’s openness and friendliness to international visitors and investors.”

Why visit Kenya in 2024

President Ruto said in his December address that, with a more streamlined entry process, he hopes more tourists will be interested in visiting the East African country.

Kenya is a dream travel destination for its abundant wildlife, spectacular beaches, outdoor adventure, culture, and cuisine. The country boasts 22 national parks, as well as 28 national reserves, 5 national sanctuaries, and dozens of community-run conservancies.

The new, arguably more relaxed entry system comes at a time when Kenya is seeing an uptick in new and newly overhauled hotels and lodges. Wildlife enthusiasts may be interested in checking into the new Angama Amboseli , by the team that created the luxurious Angama Mara. The lodge, situated in the community-run Kimana Sanctuary, features 10 sleek yet earthy tents that offer a perfect base from which to spend time with the park’s “super tusker” elephants and enjoy uninterrupted views of Mount Kilimanjaro. In the Masai Mara, the JW Marriott opened its first safari lodge last year, with 20 spacious tents, wellness offerings, and Canon EOS cameras available to use on game drives (yes, they take Bonvoy points ).

The newly refurbished Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club is located, as the name suggests, at the foothills of the country’s highest mountain. Guests who stay in one of the 100 rooms and suites may spend their days hiking, horseback riding in the nearby forests, or visiting a nearby animal orphanage.

Visitors to the Kenyan coast may check out Lamu Island, which AFAR chose as one of our top destinations to visit in 2024 , owing to its unique Swahili-style architecture and old-world charm. The Jannah , created by artist Anna Trzebinski, offers three full-service suites and hardwood dhow boats to take out for a sunset sail.

What are the Kenya long-term visa options?

Fill me in

Kenya offers several long-term visa options for various purposes, such as employment, study, business, and residence. Here are some of the most common long-term visas:

Student Visa: Issued to foreign nationals who intend to undertake studies in educational institutions in Kenya, including universities, colleges, and schools.

Diplomatic Visa: For diplomatic passport holders traveling to Kenya on official duty or representing their governments.

Special Pass: A temporary permit allowing a person to engage in specific activities like short-term employment, research, or internships for a short duration, usually not exceeding three months.

Staying healthy in Kenya: Here’s what you need to know

Healthcare facilities and standards in India can vary significantly depending on the location and the type of facility. Here's what travelers should know.

Make sure to stay updated on routine vaccines

Ensure your routine vaccines, such as measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTaP), are up-to-date.

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for all travelers aged 9 months or older arriving from a yellow fever-endemic country or if you plan to visit certain parts of Kenya.

Keep updated with Kenya's COVID-19 requirements, such as quarantine, testing, or vaccine certificates, through your airline or the Kenya government website.

Malaria is prevalent in Kenya; consult your healthcare provider for appropriate antimalarial medication.

Medical facilities

Medical facilities can vary in quality; consider travel insurance that covers medical evacuation.

Nairobi and Mombasa have better-equipped hospitals and medical services than rural areas.

Carry a basic medical kit with bandages, antiseptics, and any necessary prescription medications.

Health insurance

We’d always recommend taking out health insurance before you travel anywhere from any destination.

All the major cities in Kenya will have private medical care, but it’s expensive. You should choose travel insurance with high medical limits.

Contact your insurance provider before traveling to make sure you have the right level of coverage.

Other things to consider:

Trip cancellation, delay, and interruption benefits.

Medical expenses and medical evacuation benefits.

Baggage coverage.

Things to be aware of when visiting Kenya

Keep an extra eye on the following to keep healthy and safe during your trip to Kenya:

1. Food and water: Drink bottled or purified water, and be cautious with street food to avoid gastrointestinal issues.

2. Crime: Exercise caution in urban areas, especially at night, and be vigilant against petty theft.

Medication for personal use

Follow these tips to bring into Kenya some over-the-counter medicines:

Declare all medications: Report all medication for personal use to customs authorities.

Original packaging: Always keep medicines in their original containers and in transparent bags in your hand luggage.

Prescription or doctor's letter: Present the medical prescription issued by your doctor or other competent authority in English.

Check for restrictions: Call Kenya's embassy to verify that all of your prescription(s) are legal to bring with you.

Quantity aligned with itinerary: Bring only a reasonable quantity that aligns with the duration of your stay to avoid complications.
