NAPA, Calif. (AP) — Sahith Theegala talked all week about the importance of having nearly three dozen family members and friends following him at the Fortinet Championship. Playing with the lead on Sunday, the 25-year-old from California did everything he could to keep his supporters in high spirits.

Theegala made more than enough birdies to cover for his mistakes, shooting a 4-under 68 for a two-shot victory at Silverado, his first win in 74 starts on the PGA Tour.

Theegala started with a two-shot lead and birdied three of the opening five holes. No one got close to him the rest of the way.

“No matter the good golf or the bad golf, they just have my back. It’s a team win,” Theegala said, his mom and dad by his side on the 18th green. “It’s not just a win for me, it’s a win for the whole family.”

Theegala finished with seven birdies and three bogeys, including one after he hit a tee shot that landed in a fairway bunker on a different hole. With a three-shot lead, he hit his drive and his layup into the rough on the par-5 18th hole and tapped in for a 6. He finished at 21-under 267.

S.H. Kim (68) finished second, and Cam Davis (70) was another shot behind.

Justin Thomas had his worst round of the week in his final tuneup for the Ryder Cup in Rome, closing with an even-par 72 to finish six shots back. Max Homa, the two-time defending champion and Thomas’ U.S. teammate, closed with a 69 to tie for seventh.

Theegala, a son of Indian immigrants who played in college at Pepperdine, made the Tour Championship as a rookie last year. Last month, he made a bogey on the final hole of the BMW Championship that prevented a return to East Lake, ending his season on a sour note.

Even though he already is set for all the $20 million signature events next year, he wanted to play at Silverado because he loves the tournament and competition.

It paid off in a big way. The victory gets him into the Sentry Tournament of Champions and assures his spot in the Masters.

Before his breakthrough in Napa, Theegala had close calls at Phoenix, Hartford and Sea Island, endearing himself to fans.

His family’s support was unwavering. The afternoon ended with an emotional Theegala wiping his eyes and hugging and shaking hands with just about everyone in sight.

“To be able to share this moment with all of them is really special and something I’ll never forget,” Theegala said. “Through the highs and lows this week they’re cheering me on and supporting me. They’ve been that way since I’ve started my pro career. It’s awesome just hearing the chants every single hole and it definitely gave me a lot of energy.”

Theegala overcame his mistakes with steady iron play and superb putting. His three bogeys were one more than he had in the first three rounds combined. Each time, he steadied himself.

Theegala dropped a shot on the par-4 sixth hole after hitting his tee shot way right into a fairway bunker on No. 9. He responded by hitting a wedge 13 inches from the hole for birdie on the par-4 eighth, then made another bogey on No. 10.

Theegala birdied three of the next six holes, and after a par on the 17th, he was able to soak in the cheers from the gallery as he walked toward the 18th green.

Following bogeys with bold shotmaking is nothing new for Theegala. This time, he did it often enough to earn a trophy.

“That’s been the strength of my game for so long,” he said. “I have a pretty short memory on and off the golf course. It works out well in golf. This week I just felt so relaxed and felt like my game was in a really good place.”

Kim, one of the best putters on tour, played bogey-free and had four birdies on the back nine.

Thomas began the day with a chance for a win that would erase any doubt about U.S. captain Zach Johnson’s decision to pick him for the Ryder Cup team after a down year. But he bogeyed Nos. 2 and 5 and turned in 3 over before salvaging his round with a bogey-free back nine.

The wait is over: sahith theegala wins fortinet championship for first pga tour title, share this article.

Following a stellar rookie season on the PGA Tour, many thought the 2022-23 season would be a breakout one for Sahith Theegala.

The 25-year-old California native had a good year, though it wasn’t as good as his first on Tour. He tied for second at the RSM Classic last November and had seven top-10 finishes, but he finished 31st in the FedEx Cup standings and missed out on the Tour Championship.

Earlier this week, Theegala said he was eager to play again, and it’s easy to see why.

Theegala finally got over the hump, capturing his first PGA Tour victory Sunday at the 2023 Fortinet Championship in Napa, California. Theegala finished at 21-under 267 at Silverado Resort’s North Course, and the wait for one of the best young stars in the game to get his first victory is over.

“It doesn’t feel real. It’s probably not going to set in for while,” Theegala said. “But man, that was a lot of good golf, and that was some of the most fun I’ve ever had in my life. I had so many family and friends cheering me on, and just the support I have is mind blowing. I go to bed at night these last few days and I’m like, I can’t believe how many people are cheering for me and rooting for me.

“But man, this feeling is incredible. And I couldn’t have done it without my whole team and everyone out here. This is such a team effort, and for me to just put it together like this, it means the world, it means the world to me.”

In the final round, Theegala shot 4-under 68, including three birdies in his first five holes to take control. He led by two shots heading into a final round, and the winning margin was two after a closing bogey, but it didn’t matter.

Justin Thomas, who was in the group at T-2 before the final round, shot even-par 72 on Sunday and finished at 15 under and solo fifth. Max Homa, a fellow United States Ryder Cup team member with Thomas and the Fortinet Championship’s two-time defending victor, finished at 13 under and T-7.

Rookie S.H. Kim finished solo second at 19 under.

Although it doesn’t count as an official PGA Tour victory, Theegala won the QBE Shootout last December with partner Tom Hoge. However, there’s no doubt about his victory Sunday in wine country.

After he finished his round Sunday, Theegala’s family was there to celebrate. They walked along every hole in the final round and were boisterous in their support.

“They meant everything,” Theegala said. “Just like the way I am, I kind of keep my head down and keep going and stay focused, but I secretly just loving the cheering. It gets me fired up. And just knowing that I have that support no matter the good golf or the bad golf, they just have my back and I hope they know that I have their back, too.

“I can’t even express how I feel. It’s a team win. It’s not just a win for me, it’s a win for the whole family and everyone.”

2024 Memorial Tournament odds, picks, predictions, bets

2024 memorial tournament expert picks, bets, odds, 2024 u.s. open odds, picks, best bets, field, homa chips in, wins in napa after willett's shocking 3-putt.

NAPA, Calif. (AP) Max Homa knew he had no choice but to go for it on the par-5 18th hole if he wanted to defend his title at the Fortinet Championship. Trailing Danny Willett by a shot, he went for the green in two but ended up in a tough spot in a bunker short of the green. He blasted out but still wasn't on the putting surface.

Homa stayed aggressive, and this time it paid off, ramming his chip from 33 feet into the hole for a closing birdie. Still, all Willett needed to do was convert his own birdie from short range - and he didn't deliver.

Willett hit his 3-foot, 7-inch putt too hard. It grazed the lip and ran 4 feet, 8 inches by. Then his comebacker broke left, hit the lip and stayed out, too, completing a shocking collapse that made Homa the winner again in Napa.

''That was crazy. I still don't really know what happened,'' said Homa, a college star at California who now has three victories in the Golden State. ''Just kind of one of those weekends you just had to hang around.''

Homa high-fived his caddie when his chip shot hit the flagstick and dropped. Moments later, he was a five-time winner on the PGA Tour.

''Them things happen. Luckily we've been in a good position all week and then unfortunate things happen when you feel like you need them most,'' said Willett, who is winless in the United States since he took advantage of Jordan Spieth's collapse to win the 2016 Masters.

Willett laid up 65 yards short of the 18th green green, then stuffed his approach close enough that closing out the tournament should have been routine.

''It's a shame with how it finished but I'm pretty sure those are the only short putts we've missed all week. Just a shame to do it when I did. One of them things. At times you wish you could rewind time. We learn from it and move on,'' he said.

Homa had struggled with his putter over the weekend but didn't need it at the end.

''Today I hit it well, kept it around the hole where it needed to be, I just couldn't get the ball to go to its home,'' he said. ''On 18 it decided to go home quickly, so that was quite a nice bonus.''

Homa closed with a 4-under 66 for a total of 16-under 272 and now heads to Charlotte, North Carolina, as a captain's pick for the Presidents Cup with three wins in the past 12 months. Willett shot 69. Taylor Montgomery was alone in third at 13 under after a closing 64.

Homa's wife, Lacey, had no idea what he'd just done but hurried out to hug her husband. She is pregnant with their first child, a boy, due Nov. 2.

''I'm shocked right now,'' she said. ''I didn't see what was happening.''

The leaders had their tee times pushed up by nearly four hours in an effort to get the round in before the North course at Silverado Resort & Spa became completely unplayable. Greens that had been hard and fast earlier in the week from the sun and wind were suddenly quite the opposite, slow and soft from all the water.

Justin Lower held a one-stroke lead going into the final day while chasing his first title after years of struggles just to secure his tour card. The 33-year-old American wound up tied for fourth with Byeong Hun An at 12 under after shooting a 1-over 73.

Willett birdied three holes on the front nine to take a three-stroke lead, only to miss a short par putt on the par-5 ninth as Lower birdied to pull back within a stroke.

Homa and Willett began the day one shot back of Lower. All three players birdied the par-4 10th.

On the par-4 14th, Willett made a miraculous birdie. His tee shot landed behind a tree, and then he whipped the ball around it to the back side of the fringe before sinking a 5-foot putt.

On the front nine, Willett birdied Nos. 1, 4 and 8 - making a 7-footer for birdie on the par-4 eighth while Lower made bogey.

The 34-year-old Willett, from Sheffield, England, stayed loose, laughed with his caddie and smiled between holes in far from ideal conditions in California's famous wine country: wind and heavy rain the first three holes, a brief respite, then more rain. He regularly toweled off his clubs, wiped down his shoes before putting and took on and off his black sleeveless vest.

The weather made for an intimate gallery of umbrella-holding diehards willing to brave the elements.

''It's what I came to California for,'' Willett cracked with a grin in the early going of his final round.

PGA TOUR’s Fortinet Championship Returns September 15-18, 2022

We are thrilled to again sponsor this year’s PGA TOUR tournament held in Napa, California, at the Silverado Resort and Spa.  The Fortinet Championship  will tee off September 15–18, 2022, as the first event of the PGA TOUR’s 2022-23 FedExCup Regular Season.

Aligned with the PGA TOUR, the Fortinet Championship provides Fortinet with the continued opportunity to deliver positive community impact with Bay Area non-profit organizations and the local Napa Valley community. Nearly all PGA TOUR tournaments are organized as non-profit organizations to maximize charitable giving, and to date tournaments across all Tours have generated more than $3.37 billion.

“We are excited to again have the Fortinet Championship leading off the 2022-23 FedExCup Regular Season in September,” says Tyler Dennis, PGA TOUR president. “Last year, the Fortinet team did a stellar job of meeting and often exceeding the PGA TOUR’s high standards for our tournaments. Our players, their families, and our fans love visiting Napa Valley. With Fortinet, we expect another spectacular event this year. We appreciate the company’s help in continuing to grow the popularity of our sport as well as the charitable impact the Fortinet Championship has on the local community.”

Last year’s highly successful inaugural Fortinet Championship set in California’s beautiful wine country was voted the most fan-friendly PGA TOUR event and included a  Security Summit and Technology Vendor Exposition . The week brought together some of the world’s best golfers and their worldwide fan-base with the Fortinet community of customers, partners, and employees—some of the technology industry’s most accomplished leaders.

Security Summit and Tech Vendor Expo

This year’s Fortinet Championship will again feature a Security Summit and Technology Vendor Exposition, where we will facilitate discussions about the latest security innovations and networking trends. For over 20 years, Fortinet has been a driving force in the evolution of cybersecurity and the convergence of networking and security. Fortinet secures over half a million enterprises, service providers, and government organizations around the world. The company’s network security solutions are the most deployed, most patented, and among the most validated in the industry.

Supporting Local Nonprofits

Net proceeds from the Fortinet Championship support local non-profits that share the Fortinet vision of building an inclusive and diverse workforce by helping close the  cybersecurity skills gap . Fortinet helps to make possible a digital world that you can always trust. Our mission is to secure people, devices, and data everywhere.

“The Fortinet Championship brings together the greatest minds in the industry to double-down on the most-pressing cybersecurity challenges today. A digital world you can always trust is essential to achieving just and sustainable societies,” says Fortinet CMO and EVP of Products, John Maddison. “Fortinet has pledged to  train 1 million people  globally over five years through its Training Advancement Agenda (TAA) and Fortinet Training Institute programs to help close the cybersecurity skills gap. The partnership between Fortinet and the PGA TOUR and the Fortinet Championship itself benefits our community and customers as well as local non-profit organizations.”

Fortinet and Corporate Social Responsibility

Fortinet has designated proceeds from the Fortinet Championship to benefit non-profit organizations in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM); diversity and inclusion; and reskilling programs. These and other programs, such as Fortinet’s  TAA  Initiative, which provides free  Network Security Expert  (NSE) Certifications and training, as well as academic partner and education outreach programs are cultivating a skilled, inclusive, and diverse cybersecurity workforce to help close the  cybersecurity skills gap .

Because a digital world you can always trust is essential to achieving just and sustainable societies, at Fortinet, we believe it is our corporate social responsibility to deliver on that vision by innovating sustainable security technologies,  diversifying cybersecurity talent , and promoting responsible business across our value chain.

Fortinet Brand Ambassadors

At the inaugural Fortinet Championship event last September, Fortinet brought together the world’s best players and technology leaders, an event that culminated in  Max Homa  winning the Fortinet Championship trophy on Sunday. Later that year, Max, the inaugural champion, was named a  Fortinet Global Brand Ambassador.  David Lipsky was added as a Fortinet Brand Ambassador in 2022.

About Max Homa

A Southern California native, Max Homa was born and raised in Valencia and earned a golf scholarship to attend the University of California Berkeley. He went on to win the PAC-12 Conference Championship, as well as the 2013 NCAA Championship individual honors, and competed in the 2013 US Open as an amateur. Before turning professional, Max was a member of the victorious 2013 Walker Cup team. Max won his first PGA TOUR event at the 2019 Wells Fargo Championship.

Since then, Max has had numerous great finishes on the PGA TOUR, highlighted by three wins. After claiming his first TOUR win at the 2021 Genesis Invitational, Homa followed up this season by winning the 2021 Fortinet Championship and 2022 Wells Fargo Championship. We expect that Max will return to Napa this year to defend his title.

About David Lipsky

David Lipsky – a rookie on the PGA TOUR this year – also grew up in California, competing on the La Canada High School golf team in Southern California. He attended college at Northwestern University in Illinois, and Lipsky won multiple tournaments in his college career, including the 2010 Big Ten Individual Championship, and was honored as an All-American in 2011. Following his graduation in 2011, Lipsky turned professional. Lipsky’s secured a win at the Korn Ferry Tour’s TPC San Antonio Challenge in 2020. This victory put Lipsky in position to earn his PGA TOUR card.

PGA TOUR Americas members Joey Vrzich, Frederik Kjettrup qualify for 2024 U.S. Open

PGA TOUR Americas members Joey Vrzich, Frederik Kjettrup qualify for 2024 U.S. Open

Change Text Size

PINEHURST, North Carolina – PGA TOUR Americas members Joey Vrzich and Frederik Kjettrup are set to compete in the 2024 U.S. Open (June 13-16) at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club (Course No. 2) after securing spots at their Final Qualifying sites in Bend, Oregon and Alpharetta, Georgia, respectively. This will be each player’s first appearance in a major championship.

Vrzich is set to make his second start on TOUR, as the 25-year-old made his PGA TOUR debut at the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open on a sponsor exemption. Since then, Vrzich earned exempt membership into the inaugural PGA TOUR Americas season and recently ended the Tour’s Latin America Swing as 21st in the Fortinet Cup. His season, thus far, has been highlighted by five made cuts and three top-25s, with his best finish being tied for third at the Totalplay Championship at Atlas Country Club.

Vrzich turned professional in 2022 after spending most of his collegiate career at Pepperdine University, where he recorded 11 top-10 finishes and ranked third in all-time scoring average. The California native played collegiately for two seasons at the University of Nevada-Reno before transferring to Pepperdine after his sophomore season. Following graduation, Vrzich earned membership to PGA TOUR Canada via Q-School and spent two seasons on the Tour before it was merged into PGA TOUR Americas.

Recent Florida State alum Kjettrup, who finished No. 8 in the 2024 PGA TOUR University Ranking, qualified for the U.S. Open with back-to-back 66s on Monday. A 12-under par total was enough for Kjettrup to secure one of three qualifying spots at the Golf Club of Georgia. The Denmark native earned exempt PGA TOUR Americas membership and conditional Korn Ferry Tour status as a result of finishing Nos. 6-10 in PGA TOUR University.

The 24-year-old finished inside the top 10 five times his senior year and was a three-time champion in his four collegiate seasons at Florida State (2022 All-American Intercollegiate, 2023 Watersound Invitational, 2024 ACC Championship). He has made two appearances on the DP World Tour, with his debut at the 2023 Made in HimmerLand being his best showing. He finished tied for 24th and was the only amateur to make the cut. Kjettrup’s second appearance was a sponsor exemption into the 2024 Hero Dubai Desert Classic.

Final Qualifying also produced a list of alternates, which includes four PGA TOUR Americas members: Blake Tomlinson, Maxwell Moldovan, Thomas Ponder and Ollie Osborne. Tomlinson and Osborne are exempt PGA TOUR Americas members after finishing inside the top 60 in the Latin America Swing, Moldovan finished No. 20 in the 2024 PGA TOUR University Ranking and Ponder earned medalist honors at PGA TOUR Americas Q-School to achieve membership for the North America Swing.
