News: David Gray Announces Intimate 2023 Skellig Tour

david gray last tour

David Gray and his Skellig choir are to perform songs from his acclaimed studio album Skellig live for the first and only time in a series of five intimate shows in early 2023. Gray’s twelfth studio album, Skellig embarked on a sparser, communal soundscape with the atmospheric songs centring themselves around six-part vocals with Gray trading his signature gravel for a softer tone. The Times described the record as, “a reflective, warming album about the choices we make and why we make them”, whilst the Daily Telegraph wrote, “If your ideas of Gray are entirely based around his 1999 singalong hit Babylon, there is a good chance you are missing out on one of the most thoughtful and nuanced singer-songwriters of recent decades”. The dates include London’s Union Chapel on February 27th and Dublin’s National Concert Hall on March 4th & 5th. Tickets go on-sale Friday, October 21 at 10am.

Skellig takes its name from a formation of precipitous rocky islands off the coast of Co. Kerry, the most westerly point in Ireland. Ravaged by the Atlantic, the seemingly un-inhabitable location of Skellig Michael became an unlikely site of pilgrimage in 600AD for a group of monks, who believed that by leading such a merciful existence, they would leave the distraction of the human realm, to ultimately be closer to God. Gray asks for no literal translation of the above, nor prescribes any religious allegiance – but the story, told to him by a friend, has haunted his imagination ever since:

“The more I contemplated the idea of a small group of people landing on those rocks and establishing a monastic life there, the more overpowered I became by a dizzying sense of awe. How close to God could you possibly wish to get? Life must have been unbelievably hard for them and trying to fathom the deep spiritual conviction that compelled them to escape the mediaeval world lead me to acknowledge my own deepest longings to be free of all the endless human noise that we now so readily accept as being such an inescapable part of our day to day lives. Dreams of revelation, dreams of a cleansing purity, dreams of escape. Ideas that I think almost any 21st century person shouldn’t find it too hard to relate to!”

The multi-vocal layering that weaves throughout Skellig came to Gray through the unfolding of 2013’s Sounding Out Tour, where he recruited members of his live band – including Caroline Dale, David Kitt and Rob Malone – to experiment on his back-catalogue alongside him. The symbiosis between the singers conjured a “communal spirituality” akin to the essence of Skellig, planting seeds for what would later take shape. Gathering up Dale, Kitt and Malone, and with the addition of Niamh Farrell, Mossy Nolan and Ben de Vries, Gray ventured up to the coastal retreat of Helmsdale in the Scottish Highlands to live out the creation of the record. Welcomed by the kindness and hospitality of Edwyn Collins, his wife and son, the small, intimate studio felt a fitting location for a record eager to celebrate its Celtic affinity.

Join David and the band for this once in a lifetime intimate evening of music.

Tour Dates: 27th Feb – London, Union Chapel 1st March – Cork, Cork Opera House 2nd March – Wexford, National Opera House 4th March – Dublin , National Concert Hall 5th March – Dublin, National Concert Hall https://www.davidgray.com/live

David Gray was born in Sale, Cheshire in England on 13th June 1968. He is an English indie rock singer-songwriter.

David Gray attended the Carmarthenshire College of Art and the Liverpool School of Art.

David Gray's music career started in 1993, releasing debut album, "A Century Ends", he quickly went on the release second studio album, "Flesh", which led the singer songwriter to be recognised by popular folk and indie labels. David continued to record and work hard, released a third album in 1996, named, "Sell, sell, sell". Although he changed his style slightly, using his now trademark style of folk, alternative rock and electronics, the album was still unsuccessful.

Finally, the release of his fourth album, "White Ladder" in 2000 bought him success. The breakthrough was thanks to his best-known songs: "This Year's Love" and "Babylon". "Babylon" was number 1 in the charts for six weeks and sold over 100,000 copies alone in Ireland.

David's hard work and persistence paid off and the album was number 1 in the UK Albums Chart for two and a half years.

He has been nominated for four Brit Awards – twice for Best British Male. David Gray has toured since his music career began in 1993 and has since performed with acts, Kirsty MacColl, Dave Matthews Band and Radiohead.

Live reviews

As a 56 year old male with over 40 years of going to gigs (that’s what we called them when younger, no idea if it’s the same in the 21st Century), I have to admit to not knowing what to expect from my first David Gray concert.

Which is just as well.

My lack of expectations did not prepare me for the energy, talent, sound and overall wonderful experience I had at The Cliffs Pavillion last night (20/03/2019).

I’ve followed Mr G’s music since the mid 1990’s and have been haunted by the breathtaking music and lyrics. Receiving my signed copy of his new album (‘Goldbin a Brass Age’) just three days before I saw him, I feasted on it like a starving man.

It paid off as I was blown away by the first set of songs from this new album. I’d treated myself to a front row seat and I was captivated by the mans energy and obvious enjoyment at playing these new songs. He spoke about it being akin to learning to breathe again- and I can understand why.

Don’t get me wrong; his classic tracks are just that. Classic and enduring. The second set were many of the ‘old favourites’ and they were great. They caught the audience and carried them with him and the band.

But this new stuff? My Oh My (sorry), it was about an hour of sheer bliss. Well sung, well played and the sound was brilliant from where I was.

I’m used to Genesis, Yes, Camel, Steve Hackett and the like with Newton Faulkner, Ezio, Hue and Cry and Dan Wilde thrown in for balance. A recent Death Cab for Cutie gig was simply awesome; but this musician engaged me in his new music, enthralled me with his skill and voice and made me smile with his connection to his (very happy) audience.

If you can, go and see him. Tell him Alan said Hello and thanks...

3rd time I've seen David Gray and against expectations, the best. It was a bold move to front load the set list with new songs with the new album not yet released but it made for a powerful listening experience as the artist performed his new compositions to an audience hearing them for the first time - and they are strong tracks. Then when the older material was woven into the set it was with plenty of creativity and a willingness to take his classic tracks to new places. My Oh My, Please Forgive Me and The Other Side were delivered with power and an inventive energy. The encore opened with an acoustic Babylon with everyone singing along in accompaniment and then a tender This Year's Love on piano, cello and bass - beautiful. The closer, Nemesis, wouldn't have been my choice, but by this stage everyone was won over, enthralled at such great songs performed so creatively. Great gig, great performer. I'll be back for more.

Probably one of the most underrated musicians in the UK right now. David had an acoustic set and thank god he did because it meant we were able to hear that melodic voice of his. If he had been accompanied by a full band I doubt we would have appreciated this guy's talent. A lot of ballads and not a lot of uptempo songs but nevertheless a great privilege to have seen David Gray live. Fully enjoyed the night. I would however suggest that Usher Hall do something about those seats that keep on banging when people get to go to the toilet - very distracting

Great performance. The opener - John Smith - had a strong 30-minute set. David Gray came on soon after, and played for around 2 1/2 hours, and covered all his hit songs from the last 20 years. What I found most surprising was how much energy he had. He brought to life songs that I wouldn't consider 'rocking'. He dances & jest urea in his own awkward, British way (a la Chris Martin), but was clearly into what he was doing. Add his witty, British repartee with the crowd, & you have the makings of a great show.

Enjoyed seeing David for the first time. The music from his new album is quality stuff and I’m going to buy it.

There was one small point though that my wife and I noted and from what others were shouting out, was that we would really appreciate it if David would talk to his audience more. We person shouted out “Say hello David!” at the start of the concert and in between songs there were pauses that needed filling with what he’s been doing, his life, personal stuff, small talk etc.

There is a distinct difference between attending a show and attending a performance. David Gray is a true performer. He brought electric to the stage with a full band and heavy light show. His passion exudes from him as he brings the crowd on the journey. I didn't know many songs from him before the show (I bought the tickets for my girlfriend) but after the show he has earned another true fan who will return to see him on the next tour!

What can I say... we thought we had seen the best of DG last time he was at the Sage, but we were absolutely blown away by his performance last night... the way he immerses himself in his music is just mesmerising and at times the whole venue was absolutely silent, waiting for the next bar...what a voice, what a talent... just brilliant!

Blighty2911’s profile image

The quality and clarity of David's voice made this an outstanding experience. Interspread with personal background information about many of the songs performed made this a unique event. Even with a slight technical glitch halfway through the first set David put on a show which is one of my favourites to date. Great stuff.

ron-foord’s profile image

Fantastic music. David did a first half featuring his new music. Really interesting arrangements.

Lots of older work. Shine was outstanding.

Everyone sang along with Babylon and Sail Away.

He's great to watch. His voice was stronger than ever. And he had a sense of humor about the Raptors.

My husband and I found this concert to be dissappointing, but we can't quite figure out why. David Gray and Amos Lee are two of our favorite artists, but this show just seemed to have no energy. Amos Lee appeared to be trying too hard to woo the ladies, and David Gray's set list was oddly arranged.

David Gray Announces ‘A Century Ends’ 30th Anniversary Shows in London & Dublin

CELEBRATES THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS DEBUT ALBUM A CENTURY ENDS WITH A SERIES OF SHOWS IN  LONDON  AND  DUBLIN

EXCLUSIVELY FEATURING SONGS FROM A CENTURY ENDS  AND THE FOLLOW-UP  FLESH WITH THE ORIGINAL LINE-UP GRAY, NEILL MACCOLL & CRAIG MCCLUNE

General on-sale from 10am on Friday, December 8 th  via  HERE

We all know that  David Gray ’s  White Ladder  proved to be the catalyst for huge critical and commercial success. As a  multi-Platinum  selling and  Ivor Novello-winning  album, the iconic release made David Gray a household name – a position he has since sustained more than 20 years later. But six years earlier, the then 24-year-old Gray was an undiscovered songwriter, having just released his debut album  A Century Ends . Now,  David Gray  celebrates the 30th anniversary of the album’s release by announcing a series of intimate  A Century Ends  shows in  London  and  Dublin .

Aside from making a fleeting chart impact in Ireland ,   A Century Ends  went largely unnoticed upon its initial release. But with 30 years of wisdom, it’s now easy to recognise its significance within  David’s  discography. Opening track  ‘Shine’  has become a regular part of his live shows in the years that followed, while other songs such as  ‘Debauchery’ ,  ‘Wisdom’  and  ‘Birds Without Wings’  also possess the passionate vocal delivery, acute songcraft and surfeit of emotions that later connected with mainstream audiences as his career went global with  White Ladder .

The A Century Ends  shows will commence at  Omeara  in  London  on  January 30  and will then head to  Dublin  for a four-night run at  Whelan’s  – the final show of these dates coming precisely 30 years to the day since  David  first played the storied venue. For those signed-up to David Gray’s  MAILER ,  a  pre-sale  code will be made available from  10am  on  Wednesday, December 6.  General sale  HERE  from  10am  on  Friday, December 8 th .

David’s  Whelan’s  debut marked a significant turning point in his career, after he had spent much of the previous months touring  England  with little success. The gig had been DIY promoted by Donal Scannell, and RTÉ presenter Donal Dineen, known for his celebrated TV show  No Disco . David arrived in a similar DIY fashion – with no tour manager, no sound engineer, and no backdrop – just his bandmates  Neil MacColl  (guitar) and  Craig McClune (drums, playing with just one hand, having recently broken his arm) to find the place packed from wall-to-wall.

With the poet Pat Ingoldsby  introducing David on stage, it was the night when the enduring shared love between  David  and  Ireland  first began.  White Ladder  remains the biggest selling album in the nation’s history (now a staggering  20x Platinum ), while  David’s  many unforgettable shows in  Ireland  have included  Marlay Park ,  Dublin Castle ,  Musgrave Park , and last year’s three-night stand at the  3Arena .

These new dates will see David  reunited with  Neill MacColl  and  Craig McClune , and the trio will perform songs exclusively from  A Century Ends   and its follow-up,  1994’s  Flesh .

David  says,  “I’ve wanted to focus on  A Century Ends  for some time, and this feels like the right moment to do so. I think it’s a defining record in the same way that  White Ladder  was. It was my first record, and it tells the story of who I am just as vividly as  White Ladder does. I also remember how those early gigs were so special. It’s going to be so intense – I might even revisit my 1994 look and bleach my hair blonde!”

The dates are:

30th – London, Omeara

1st – Dublin, Whelan’s 2nd – Dublin, Whelan’s 3rd – Dublin, Whelan’s 4th – Dublin, Whelan’s

david gilmour pink floyd album

David Gilmour , who has often given off the appearance of being happily retired, hasn’t been keeping himself from the studio after all. The ex- Pink Floyd singer-guitarist has announced his first album in nine years, “Luck and Strange,” and he’s giving everyone time to prepare for it, with the release not coming till Sept. 6.

The first teaser track is imminent, however, with “The Piper’s Call” due to come out on DSPs on Thursday, to be followed by a music video on Friday. He also released a short teaser on YouTube featuring himself and his dog in the studio during the mixing process.

Popular on Variety

Lyrics have mostly been written by Gilmour’s wife, Polly Samson, as has been the case with Gilmour’s albums for decades, and the latter-day/post-Roger Waters material that Pink Floyd did before retiring the moniker, Samson said in a statement that the songs are “written from the point of view of being older; mortality is the constant.”

Other family members also contribute, harking back to family livestreams that the Gilmour clan did during the pandemic lockdowns. Romany Gilmour sings, plays harp and sings lead vocals on “Between Two Points.” Gabriel Gilmour contributes backing vocals. Charlie Gilmour wrote lyrics for the album’s closing song, “Scattered.”

Gilmour collaborated with a co-producer on the album, Charlie Andrew, who’s worked with ALT-J and Marika Hackman. “We invited Charlie to the house, so he came and listened to some demos,” Gilmour recalled in a statement, “and said things like, ‘Well, why does there have to be a guitar solo there?’ and ‘Do they all fade out? Can’t some of them just end?'” While Andrew questioning the need for guitar solos may not put him in the immediate good stead of all Gilmour fans, the artist says the approach of not taking any tropes for granted was refreshing. “He has a wonderful lack of knowledge or respect for this past of mine. He’s very direct and not in any way overawed, and I love that. That is just so good for me because the last thing you want is people just deferring to you.”

Famed photographer Anton Corbijn is responsible for the album imagery.

Gilmour was last in the news in 2023 when the deepening of a longstanding rift between him and Waters became apparent. Samson responded to Waters’ ongoing controversies by publicly stating to her husband’s former bandmate that he was “rotten to your antisemitic core” and “a Putin apologist,” and Gilmour emphatically cosigned his spouse’s statement, writing: “Every word demonstrably true.”

Gilmour toured behind the 2015 “Rattle That Lock” album, his fourth solo effort, and had suggested he was done hitting the road after that; there’s no indication yet whether he might reconsider in support of the new effort.

The Spice Girls: Melanie B, Melanie C, Geri Halliwell, Victoria Adams And Emma Bunton

Spice Girls reunite at Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday party

David Beckham shares video of former girl group singing their hit Stop at private club Oswald’s in London, as Mel B hints at a tour

The Spice Girls have reunited for a rare performance featuring all five members – at Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday party, where they danced to their classic hit Stop.

The party was held on Saturday at Oswald’s, a private members’ club in London, with the likes of Tom Cruise, Salma Hayek, Eva Longoria and Gordon Ramsay also attending.

During the party, Beckham – along with fellow Spice Girls Geri Halliwell-Horner, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm and Emma Bunton – sang along to Stop as well as performing the signature choreography from the single off their 1997 sophomore album Spiceworld.

Beckham’s husband, David Beckham , posted a video to Instagram where he gleefully looked on. “I mean come on,” the 48-year-old former footballer captioned the video.

Victoria responded in the comments, writing: “Best night ever! Happy Birthday to me! I love you all so much!”

Brown also hinted at a potential reunion tour. “About last night #tourdatescomingsoon,” she shared, reposting the video to her Instagram story.

Last month, Brown teased in an interview with Today that the Spice Girls were working on something “very good” together – though she did not confirm rumours of a tour at the time.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Spice Girls, who formed in 1994 and officially split six years later in 2000.

They have reunited multiple times over the years – most recently as part of their 2019 Spice World tour, which Beckham did not attend. The last time all five members performed publicly was in 2012 for the closing ceremony of the London Olympics.

In 2023 the Beckhams’ marriage was explored in a four-part Netflix documentary series, which also addressed his rise to fame as a footballer and the extensive press speculation that he allegedly had an affair while playing for Real Madrid in 2003.

David Gray had been struggling on the margins for a decade, a lonely figure with an acoustic guitar swimming against the tide of Britpop, grunge, hip hop and electro.
