Setting the Stage: Norwegian black metal legends Mayhem have been around for more than 35 years, which is pretty epic considering their tumultuous history that includes murder and suicide (as depicted in the 2018 film Lords of Chaos ).

The extreme metal act’s “The Sanguine Sodomy of North America” tour kicked off March 7th in San Francisco as one leg of a massive world tour, and hit Los Angeles the next night on March 8th. ( Heavy Consequence was present for both shows, with a photographer in San Francisco and a reporter in L.A.). The North American leg runs wraps April 3rd in Joliet, Illinois, with tickets available via Ticketmaster .

Mayhem originally set up the outing as a co-headliner with Swedish black metal veterans Watain. Unfortunately, just days before the tour was set to begin, Watain had to drop out due to visa issues .

Taking the Stage: Mayhem’s set was essentially a retrospective of their long and storied career presented in three acts complete with costume and set changes. The band fully embraces the theatrics of black metal, help make the show such an immersive live experience.

The first act of Mayhem’s set consisted of newer material, opening with “Falsified and Hated” from their latest studio album, Daemon , which landed at No. 1 on Heavy Consequence ‘s Top Metal & Hard Rock Albums of 2019 . With its spastic opening riffs that veer into a churning atmospheric dirge, it was a great choice. The song embodies the band’s style, which hasn’t wavered much over the years. Act One wrapped up with “Voces Ab Alta,” a track off their recent Atavistic Black Disorder / Kommando EP.

Then the stage went dark and creepy music played as the band prepared for Act Two. The lights went up revealing a backdrop change from a disturbing depiction of Jesus to an ominous cathedral with upside-down crosses. Lead singer Attila Csihar changed from a red pope-like robe to a black ritual style one with the guitarists flanking him on either side in hoods like evil monks. Mayhem had very little banter between songs, as they let the music do the talking.

The band then went into one of their more famous (or possibly infamous) songs, “Freezing Moon,” from their iconic debut album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas . One got a reverent feeling as the band continued to blast through the older material with audience favorites like “Pegan Fears.” Its intricately speed picked intensity was very well executed by current guitarists Charles “Ghul” Hedger and Teloch. Of course, they were accompanied by the thundering bass of founding member Necrobutcher, as a mosh pit broke out within the crowd.

Act Three began with the instrumental opener “Silvester Anfang” from the 1987 Deathcrush EP. Now bathed in red light with a red banner emblazoned with a giant Mayhem logo behind them, the band launched into some true Norwegian black metal from back in the day, including the title track from Deathcrush as well as “Chainsaw Gutsfuck.” By this time, Mayhem had taken off their robes and masks, allowing fans to finally see their full faces. They threw in the “Freezing Moon” split single “Carnage” and ended the set with the short but brutal “Pure F**king Armageddon,” the last track on Deathcrush . The song served as a proper closer, as that’s exactly what the audience experienced during Mayhem’s set — pure f**king armageddon .

Solid Support: Midnight , the one-man blackened speed metal band from Ohio formed by multi-instrumentalist Athenar, was an interesting choice for the opener. Of course, there was supposed to be Watain in between, which would have bridged the gap a bit more between Midnight’s black metal party music and the hypnotic and brutal reverence that was Mayhem. Both Midnight and Mayhem also played longer sets to make up for their absence.

Midnight is certainly fun as the three-piece they have become for live shows. They found a hell of a drummer and have some good chemistry on stage despite being born of a one-man project. Their faces were covered in masks somewhere between bondage and Leather Face as they plowed through their succinct brand of punk beats with thrashy guitars and shouted vocals.

“Hello Los Angeles, City of Evil Angels,” Athenar remarked as they kicked off their insanely loud set with “Black Rock’n’Roll” from the Complete and Total Hell compilation. They certainly make “music to start fights to,” as their record label Metal Blade puts it, as they had a very decent pit going.

After some sound issues with the vocals and bass, Athenar quipped, “Can you hear the vocals because what I’m saying is very important.” With song titles like “Who Gives a F**k” and “Evil Like a Knife” it is clear they don’t take themselves too seriously.

Overall, despite the absence of Watain, fans were treated to a full evening of brutal in-your-face metal music.

Just went to the MDF 24' , their performance was worth going and the time amount they got to play was good. This was a very good, festival and I feel like they got the crowd very energetic and most people went to watch them. Seeing the darkest band in history was hard to believe but I would totally go see them again, HellHammer was my favorite on the drums. Very Amazing Performance.

Sounded amazing! I drank a shit load of beer. What a treat to hear De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas live. The crowd was scary as shit and my ears are still ringing.

Once we got in, the first opening band Black Anvil only took a few minutes to take the stage, once they started i was immediately in the mood for the show, they were a great opener and got the crowd in a good mood. About 10-15 minutes after they finished up Inquisition came out to an already packed crowd in the Ballroom. Inquisition completely blew me away, so much so that I bought their new album on vinyl, and a T-Shirt. About 20 minutes of setting up the stage later the theatrics started for Mayhem, and when Funeral Fog kicked in the place went crazy, with a huge pit taking up around half the floor. Mayhem was incredible and it was truly a once in a lifetime kind of show.

Mayhem, Watain and Midnight will be joining forces for a North American trek in 2022. The outing, titled ‘The Sanguine Sodomy of North America,’ takes off on March 7th in San Francisco, CA and runs through April 3rd in Joliet, IL, hitting over 20 major markets along the way — all dates are listed below.

Mayhem and Watain released the following statement: “ Mayhem and Watain are delighted to announce that what is to become known in history as the sanguine sodomy of North America is set to take place in the spring of 2022, with both our bands at the helm and with the infamous Midnight joining us as special guests. We hereby invite all of our North American friends and foes to celebrate the return of Darkness and Evil to your lands, and to join us in what is destined to become one legendary Hell of a tour! ”

In more news, Watain recently completed production on their new record, which will unleash spring 2022 through Nuclear Blast Records.

Infamous Black Metal Bands MAYHEM & WATAIN Announce North American Tour for 2022!

Two notorious Black metal bands, The True MAYHEM and WATAIN have announced a North American tour for March of 2022! The tour has been labeled, “The Sanguine Sodomy Of North America”. Special guests on the tour will be Midnight. Get all the tour dates and details down below after the break.

Notorious Swedish black metal collective WATAIN is proud to announce that it will join forces with equally infamous Norwegian black metal legends MAYHEM for a tour through North America, aptly labeled “ The Sanguine Sodomy Of North America ,” starting on March 7th, 2022. They will be supported by US blackened speed metal punks MIDNIGHT .

Watain themselves will be also be releasing their seventh studio album around the launch of that trek with more details to come. The originators of True Norwegian Black Metal, MAYHEM returned to North American shores as part of “The Sanguine Sodomy of North America,” which kicked off March 7th in San Francisco and runs through an April 3rd show in Joliet, Illinois. I am reviewing the tour’s stop off in Austin, Texas. While the majority of show review I’ve done for Metal Centre have taken place at Come and Take It Live on Riverside, this show occurred at Mohawk on Red River. Mohawk is located in the Entertainment District in downtown Austin.

I was a bit apprehensive about going to this show since it took place during South By Southwest (SXSW), which is one of the largest festivals in the world. Film and industry mavens come from all around the world to attend live music concerts, backyard parties, movie premieres and various events in the technology world. SXSW is a bit intimidating since so many people come to. Tonight’s concert was packed, but I have seen Austin much more packed before in previous years. Maybe this was due to the hiatus put on the festival due to the COVID pandemic.

This is the fifth time I’ve seen MAYHEM play and third at this venue. The last time was in 2018 when they played a set entirely culled from their legendary debut full-length album “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.” I also saw them in 2015 as part of Fun Fun Fun Fest Nites with WATAIN and ROTTING CHRIST. WATAIN and MAYHEM is the ultimate Black Metal concert (ROTTING CHRIST aren’t too shabby themselves), so people got excited when word spread that WATAIN and MAYHEM were touring again. Unfortunately, as Metal Centre reported, WATAIN experienced Visa issues and were unable to make this tour. The show must go on, though, and openers MIDNIGHT were able to expand their set time to 45 minutes.

With no local openers, Cleveland’s masked miscreants of speed metal, MIDNIGHT opened the show. I knew MIDNIGHT had a sound that would go over well in this town, but I didn’t realize just how well. The crowd was packed and energetic, I got pushed on quite a bit from the pit that was moving around behind me. ‘80s metal is strong in Austin, and their blend of ‘80s styles including Speed Metal, Punk Rock, NOWOBHM, and Black Metal went over extremely well. MIDNIGHT looked cool, too, with black masks and hoods. MAYHEM guitarist, Charles Hedger, told me MIDNIGHT was a great band to warm them up. He loved the fact that they’re a power trio that sound like MOTORHEAD (I added VENOM to that assessment, which Charles agreed). If you like Metal from the times when it was fun and sleazy, then check out MIDNIGHT’S new album “Let Their Be Witchery,” which was showcased as part of their set.

MAYHEM have been excellent every time I’ve seen them starting with their first North American appearance at the Milwaukee Metal Fest in 1998. Of course, the line-up back then was different with Maniac on vocals and Blasphemer playing guitar. There was no Teloch or Ghul playing guitar. Also, due to Milwaukee Metal Fest’s time constraints, MAYHEM’s first appearance on these shows was brief, only five songs. That would clearly not be the case tonight. In fact, MAYHEM’s set was the most comprehensive I’ve seen in all five concerts. Actually, it was a MAYHEM fan’s dream set list. The group played a 3-part set, which started with a mish mash of material, a dress change and a section of “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas” material and then another dress change and ending with “Death Crush” material.

I kept wanting “De Mysteriis” material in the beginning. I’ll admit I wasn’t too familiar with some of the opening material like “To Daimonion” from the “Grand Declaration of War” (my least favorite record). I had a greater appreciation for this song live, though. Don’t get me wrong,” and “My Death” were tremendous new tracks from their last full-length “Daemon,” which was my #1 Metal album selection for 2019, but but still I wanted “De Mysteriis” material. “Falsified and Hated” was a great new edition to their set, though from that album. “Symbols of Bloodswords” from “Wolf’s Lair Abyss” EP was the first song that really got me excited. Amazing song with diverse vocals. It was cool hearing Attila’s vocal approach to Maniac songs. He was fantastic, his shrieks were even better than Maniac, especially during the “Death Crush” material.

The group exited the stage and returned donning satanic robes they used on the “De Mysteriis”-showcased material tours. They returned with their iconic and arguably most MAYHEMic track, “Freezing Moon.” The doomed tones and robes set the stage for vamperic murder and immortal wanderings. “Diabolic shapes float by, out from the dark.” This was a fitting lyric as there was no front light to the band. There was light behind them, but with no front light the band members appeared as floating shapes, or specters if you will. When the song really kicked in, Hellhammer’s drumming was almost too fast to comprehend. Being too fast is never a bad thing, and I can’t slight my favorite black metal drummer and arguably the G.O.A.T. of black metal drumming, Hellhammer.

While “Freezing Moon” is synonymous with Dead’s “Live in Leipzig” album, “Life Eternal” was the ultimate tribute to the man who committed suicide before having the chance to record this song in studio for “De Mysteriis…”. Teloch and Ghul were like Snorre Ruch and Euronymous, their melodies joined in mournful harmony before once again the song took off with blazing speed and hypber blasts of Hellhammer. Hellhammer fucking destroyed! This song just really gets me because I often feel this way. Black Metal doesn’t always have to be about Satan, it can be about death, depression, existentialism and even suicide. I feel Necrobutcher was trying to convey all these themes about his fallen friend, Dead, on this track. “Pagan Fears” was another welcomed track from the greatest BM album of all-time they played tonight. The tribal-pounding drums and nefarious guitar chords made this a great song to hear, one that I’ve only seen at the entire-album concert.

I’ve always felt “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas” was the superior album to MAYHEM’s “Death Crush” EP, but the highlight of the night was their stripped down, old school, jean jacket, denim and leather material from the EP. I never truly appreciated just how good this material is until tonight’s concert. Of course Hellhammer didn’t play on this recording, but his renditions were definitely better than the recording (which were quite good). The title track, “Carnage,” “Chainsaw Gutsfuck” were on point and the band really fucking brought it home ending where it all begin “Pure Fucking Armageddon.”

Again, I can’t stress enough how the shows on this tour are the ultimate dream sets for MAYHEM and Black Metal fans, overall. Sure, it would have been better with WATAIN. It might have been the Black Metal tour (I still prefer the ROTTING CHRIST line-up of 20015) of this year! “Some memories will never go away and some will

forever be here!!!!” Indeed.

Mayhem announces US Tour Dates, video + live album

For fans who are hungry for the real thing, fret not! Mayhem will be hitting the road later this year with Cannibal Corpse, Gorguts, and Blood Incantation. The extensive trek will kick off on September 22 in Nashville, TN and will draw the final curtain a month later on October 21st in Louisville, KY. Tickets can be found here . Watain Forced to Pull Out of Tour With Mayhem Due to Visa Issues

UPDATE: Watain have pulled out of their North American Tour with Mayhem, dubbed "The Sanguine Sodomy of North America." The band released a statement saying the US Embassy "decided to launch an additional, undisclosed 'administrative process' in relation to Watain's visa applications."

Spring is typically the time things start to bloom and the sun starts to shine a little more, but spring 2022 will provide a darkened presence right as the seasons turn. That's because black metal legends Mayhem and Watain are set to head stateside for their "The Sanguine Sodomy of North America" trek.

It's a powerful bill with the Norwegian and Swedish outfits uniting to bring a night of pure pummeling presence to stages across the U.S. and Canada. And as if that weren't enough, blackened speed metal punks Midnight will open the shows.

Watain just wrapped up the recording of their seventh studio album, which is on target for a spring 2022 release through Nuclear Blast. Mayhem, meanwhile, most recently released the Atavistic Black Disorder / Kommando EP last year, following 2019 Daemon full-length.

In a collective statement, they explain, "Mayhem and Watain are delighted to announce that what is to become known in history as the 'Sanguine Sodomy of North America' is set to take place in the spring of 2022, with both our bands at the helm and with the infamous Midnight joining us as special guests. We hereby invite all of our North American friends and foes to celebrate the return of Darkness and Evil to your lands, and to join us in what is destined to become one legendary Hell of a tour!"

2024 MAYHEM Festival Lineup Announced; BAD OMENS, PARKWAY DRIVE And ARCHITECTS To Headline

Mayhem festival will return as a single-destination event in Southern California on October 12, 2024. 23 bands will perform at the festival, which will be held at Glen Helen Amphitheater in San Bernardino, California, where Mayhem first began.

Mayhem had a long successful history of elevating headliners such as KORN , SLIPKNOT , AVENGED SEVENFOLD and ROB ZOMBIE as well helping catapult support acts like LAMB OF GOD , KILLSWITCH ENGAGE , UNDEROATH , MASTODON and WHITECHAPEL . The Southern California comeback show will feature four returning Mayhem artists and 19 acts performing on the festival for the first time.

This year's lineup is as follows:

Mayhem originally teased a 2020 comeback in December 2019 following a five-year absence, but those plans were subsequently put on hold due to the global pandemic.

Mayhem was founded in 2008 by Vans Warped Tour 's Kevin Lyman and his partner John Reese . Over the years, such groups as SLIPKNOT , SLAYER , MOTIONLESS IN WHITE , ASKING ALEXANDRIA and UNDEROATH have taken part in the event.

Following the SLAYER -headlined 2015 edition of Mayhem , Reese declared that the festival was coming to a close, in light of poor attendance and less-than-kind words from SLAYER guitarist Kerry King .

" Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival 2015 comes to an end," Reese wrote in a social media post back in August 2015. "All I know is we have all tried our damned hardest to make Mayhem a home for artists, a platform for bands to increase their fan base and a place where people feel welcomed."

A few weeks earlier, Lyman criticized the metal scene for the lower-than-usual attendance at the 2015 edition of the traveling event. The tour was smaller that year, with fewer bands overall and fewer "headline-worthy" acts at the top.

In addition to SLAYER , the lineup featured KING DIAMOND as headliners, with HELLYEAH , THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA and WHITECHAPEL among the support acts.

"The bands at the top all demand a certain level of fee to be on a tour," Lyman told the Detroit Free Press back in July 2015. "Unlike punk rock, metal never knows how to take a step back to move the whole scene forward…What happened was metal chased girls away because what happened was metal aged. Metal got gray, bald and fat."

King later told the Houston Press that the problem with that summer's event lay not so much with the metal bands themselves but with the way the festival was booked.

"I didn't take what [ Lyman ] said personally," Kerry said. "He just definitely had a mike put in front of him and said some shit that's detrimental to this tour and any tours he has in the future — not just Mayhem , but whatever else he promotes. Because, to me, he committed business suicide.

"At the end of the day, what I think happened to Mayhem was that they waited too late in the game to get the talent they needed to pull it off correctly," Kerry continued. "Because what happens is, people get booked up so early these days that it seems like all the bands that could have made this more of a success are playing in Europe now instead of being on a U.S. festival. It just made the talent pool less than it could be."
