The Best Safari Vehicle for Wildlife Viewing

Tanzania is a WIDE open space. When you go on an African safari and a game drive through the Serengeti, you’ll be spending a lot of time and covering a ton of land by car. So, the vehicle you choose to travel in can determine the ultimate success of your trip. Watch the video below to hear from safari specialists, expert driver guides and our past guests to hear why private close-sided vehicles are the best choice for a host of reasons.

land rover on safari

Wildlife photographer and filmmaker Jeff Smith , takes you on a game drive through the hot African sun – through dust, mud and occasional rain, explaining how our Land Rover Land Cruisers pass the test of safari safety while getting our guests as close as possible to the action.

When you book a safari, you should inquire about what kind of vehicles you’re going to use because you’re going to spend a LOT of time inside of them.

Jeff Smith shares a scenario from his last trip to Tanzania to illustrate this point:

“The other day we were right by the side of the road where a lion had taken down a wildebeest. And those lions that were feeding on that wildebeest were no more than 7 feet away from the vehicle! But you’re IN this vehicle and that gives you a very good sense of security. Also, it doesn’t distract the animals. The animals see the vehicle as one large object. That’s why I’m somewhat against the open-sided vehicles that are starting to show up in the Serengeti because people can move around and reach out and you don’t feel as safe. And that’s probably realistic because you are NOT as safe. You are not as safe in an open vehicle from the elements, from the animals, from the dust, from the mud that gets thrown up sometimes, from the sun… so I think it’s an important thing to ask – What vehicle am I going to be using?”

From a safety standpoint, safari specialist Dawn Anderson explains that “if you’re in an open-sided vehicle, you’re guide is probably going to keep some distance between you and that animal.” There’s only so much the driver can do in this scenario. Their only way to keep you safe is to keep you further away.

Specialist Sharon Lyon agrees: “I would much rather be in a closed-sided vehicle with the lions or leopards right next to me than have to stay 25, 30, 50 feet away from a pride of lions. So, that’s one advantage. I feel safer and can get much closer to the animals.”

land rover on safari

Aside from safety, comfort is another important aspect to consider. The open-sided vehicles are proven to be less comfortable because they are not all-weather vehicles.

From his last trip, Jeff Smith recalls:

“In the vehicles that Africa Dream Safaris uses, you can pull your shoes off, you can stand up on the seats and your entire torso is sticking out of the vehicle. You have a 360 degree view all the way around. If you don’t want to stand, you can sit down – it’s comfortable. It’s also quiet in there and it’s out of the dust – you can hear your driver whose going to be explaining things throughout and stuff you don’t want to miss.”

land rover on safari

Local Tanzanian and expert safari driver Roman Desiderius explains why he prefers the type of vehicles we make use of:

“ADS vehicles are fantastic. You can remove the roof so guests can stand up and take photos at 360 degrees or whatever they want to do. When it rains and we put the roof back on, then guest can still use the windows to shoot out of for fantastic photos despite the rain. If I’m driving people who really prioritize photography, I think the open vehicles are not as good as the closed vehicles that ADS actually owns.”

land rover on safari

“There’s different companies that offer different things so it’s really important to make sure that their vehicles match what you want to be able to do. Because you’re spending all this money to get out here and you don’t want to get out here and find out your ride is terrible.” – Chris Limberis (filmmaker / photographer)

Ultimately, the choice is yours. When searching for a company to be your host to the most magical place on earth, don’t be afraid to ask questions about each and every detail of your trip.  It’s a trip of a lifetime after all and you’ll want to get it right.

Going on Private Sufari with you in June 2019 and am still so stoked, even though we are doing Hawaii and a Nile Cruise before. This tip has consumed all my energy since making the decision to book with you in late 2017. It has also consumed a bunch of money. But this trip is once in a once in a lifetime.Bought a new lense for my camera, and bought an iPhone X as an additional camera. Oh yes, I also bought a GoPro to record the entire adventure.

Can not wait for this to begin.

What To Expect From Your Safari Vehicle

A useful guide to safari vehicles. Whats the difference, and where are they used?

Kearsley Safari Vehicle

Safari vehicles vary from camp to camp, and country to country. In this guide we want to show you an example so you know what to expect. On the whole there are 2 main types of vehicle. 'Closed' vehicles, which are mainly used in Eastern Africa ( Kenya , Tanzania , Rwanda , and Uganda ). 'Open' vehicles tend to be used in Southern Africa ( Botswana , Namibia , South Africa , and Zambia ).

'Closed' Vehicles

Most Safari vehicles are Land Rover Defenders and Toyota Land Cruisers, seating up to seven guests plus your driver. They are designed to maximise wildlife viewing in the National Parks as well as comfort on the roads in-between the parks. The below seven seat vehicles have special features including window seats for all passengers, as well as a pop-up roof so that you can stand up and get an amazing unobstructed view of the animals.

Kearsleys Tanzania Safari

'Open' Vehicles

Where long journeys by road aren't required for your safari, most of southern Africa, open sided vehicles tend to be used. These 4x4's are normally Land Cruisers, or Land Rovers. Open sided vehicles have their advantages. It's much easier to capture photos and the experience seems much closer. If shade is needed most vehicles will have sunshades.

Safari Vehicles – Everything You Need to Know About Cars for the Bush

Matt Davison

Safari vehicles come in all shapes and sizes and offer different ways to experience the African bush. The car is something that you would probably overlook when choosing one for your safari, but it can be the pivotal factor in how you experience your safari.

From the safari enthusiast who knows nothing about cars to the weekend explorer who has the 4×4 with all the extras you can imagine, this is a guide on everything you need to know.  It breaks down what to expect from the safari vehicles you will be using when going on your first safari trip.

If you haven’t quite got as far as booking your first trip, then this guide to the best safaris in Africa for first-timers is the perfect starting point.

guided safari trip in the bush

What is a Safari Vehicle?

You might be asking yourself what African safari cars are and why they matter? In general, they are large 4×4 vehicles that have been modified to ensure the passengers’ safety. It is worth remembering that the regulations about the vehicles differ from national parks to private reserves and from province to province.

Big, small, open, or closed — there are a few different types of vehicles for safaris that the different national parks use. The vehicle should suit your needs or what you want to get out of the safari.

Unfortunately, you don’t always have a choice when it comes to what safari cars are available. So here is everything that you need to know to help prepare you for what to expect and how to choose what vehicle is best for you on safari.

If you are more of the adventurous type and would rather rent your own vehicle, this will also help you in understanding what vehicle would be best. All safari vehicles should at least have some, if not all of these features:

  • Snorkel to handle deep water
  • Upgraded suspension for extra comfort and durability
  • Upgraded wheels and tires suited to the terrain

African Safari Vehicles

When it comes to an African safari car, there are a number of different types of vehicles that could be used on your drive. Most safaris however will be in a 4×4 safari where the terrain requires a 4-wheel drive vehicle to pass through. But there are other routes that will allow you to travel in a much larger group in more comfort, such as in a sprinter van on a hardpack road.

Some National Park’s offer a pickup service for a private tour where the guide will pick you up in the safari vehicle, with the canvas sides closed. They will then open the sides once you start your safari. You wouldn’t exactly want to be in an open vehicle driving along the freeway but on the game drive, it is perfect. A closed vehicle would be more comfortable in that scenario but not as good on the game drive itself with limited viewing available.

The two most common vehicles used are either safari Jeeps or Toyota safari vehicles. They both have their own advantages and disadvantages but are some of the best for the job.

Toyota Safari Vehicles

The legendary and most reliable of them all, most game parks use Toyota Land Cruisers as their vehicle of choice. Having replaced the trusty Land Rover Defender and the African safari Jeep a few decades ago, Toyota changed the game forever.

There are both enclosed and open Toyota safari vehicles, depending on the location and guidelines of the park. Fully open vehicles provide unrestricted views of the world around you, perfect for the photographers who want to get that perfect shot. An open vehicle has no doors, windows, or frames to block your view. You also have the ability to listen and talk to your guide, ensuring that you don’t miss a thing and know what is going on at all times.

The closed version offers more protection from the elements on those colder and wetter days. The downside, though, is that your view is more restricted and you have to look through windows. This isn’t ideal for those wanting to take photographs but perfect for those who want a comfortable experience.

Land Rover driving through landscape

Safari Trucks

If you really want to go off the grid and live in the bush, then a safari truck is the answer. These beasts are normally caravans on wheels with either 4×4 or 6×6 capabilities and can live in the middle of nowhere for weeks on end. Other safari trucks that are used are normal vans, such as a sprinter van. These will take you and a group of your friends in amazing comfort on more maintained and established tracks.

safari cars next to watering hole

Types of Safari

The type of safari that you choose to do will have an impact on the type of safari vehicle that will be available to you. Not only that but the location of your safari will also be a factor in what vehicle is available.

Kenya and Tanzania prefer to use fully enclosed vehicles with their passengers but with the added modification of an expanding or opening roof. This means that if you get tired of looking through the window with limited visibility, you can stand for an uninterrupted view. The roof is then closed once the safari is over. This is different in South Africa where mostly open-air vehicles are used for a much better experience.

Guided Game Drive

The most popular of the safari options are the guided game drives on private game reserves and National Parks. These are the go-to for anyone who is visiting a game reserve.

The professional guides will either use an open or enclosed vehicle depending on their rules and preference. If you visit during the summertime, don’t forget a hat to protect you from the sun. If you brave the winter months then layer up as it can get really cold in the bush at all times, especially when the sun goes down.

If you are wanting the full open vehicle experience then this short afternoon safari in the Kruger is a beautiful and quick excursion into the African landscape. Don’t forget to wear a solid pair of boots and clothes that you wouldn’t mind getting dirty as well, as you can expect a lot of mud and dust.

Self-Drive Safaris

For the mavericks and explorers among us, the self-drive safari is one of the top bucket list adventures. Renting or taking your own vehicle through a national park and going at your own pace to explore the landscape is the perfect option. It is possible to do a self-drive safari in any car with plenty of accommodation options in National Parks. For the ultimate experience, you’d want a 4×4 with all the bells and whistles.

Different Safari Cars for a Different Experience

Now that you know that a safari car isn’t just a car and that they are different, you will be able to choose the perfect safari to suit your needs. If you are wanting a photographic excursion into the wild then an open safari car is the best.

If you want to feel a little more protected then an enclosed vehicle is your car of choice. If you are planning a trip to Africa or Kenya in particular, then this guide on all you need to know about safaris in Kenya will help plan your trip.

Why not give this 3-day safari adventure in Nairobi a try? It is a beautiful drive into the Kenyan landscape.

Don’t forget to dress appropriately for the car that you will be driving in and enjoy every moment of your safari.

Good Day All! I'm a newbie to the Land Rover bug and have a ton of questions, of course. I bought my LR2 in Oct 2008, just purchased an '04 Disco II SE, and already have my eyes set on either a Series III or a IIa 88" for my future purchase. Questionette #1 : I've been drooling over all the pics of the Series vehicles on the internet and keep seeing this Safari (double skin) roof. What's it for and does it actually work? Questionette #2 : Not a gearhead by any means, yet not afraid to work with wrenches, I'm keeping my sights towards the Series III (1984) simply because of the coils. Is it expensive to have leaf springs converted to a coil or is money better spent just looking for a good condition coil spring? My thoughts are that if a good condition IIa comes along with leaf springs the cost to convert to coils is better than finding a Series III that doesn't match the condition of the IIa. Thanks All.

i don't have a safari top, mine's canvas, but everyone who has 'em will tell you they do keep you cooler, as long as you're moving. parbolic or oem springs are easy to find and install (the install part is a lie, the old springs will be a bear to ge off) coils are for goils. real men (excuse he sexist sarcasim) ride springs

You'll find this board to be a wealth of expertise and people who share the Rover passion. I'm in a similar boat as you - having sold a Disco a few years ago, I'm looking for a Series IIa or III to get back into the fold. As such, I've been checking out the different roof options and am interested in replies regarding the safari top as well. My plan had been to swap a hard top for canvas in the summer... although when it comes to logistics I dont have a place to store a hard top when not in use. A safari top might be a nice mix between the two. Keep us posted on your search!

The safari top is an extra thin aluminium sun sheet over the basic roof and a set of 4 vents to let air in when you are moving. They work up to a point but you are still going to be sweating in the desert. The sun sheets are not very robust so you can't climb on the roof and you have to be careful with roof racks etc. I'm currently beating out about 100 dents on the one on my project 109. They are desireable for most environemnts though. A SIII is still leaf sprung. The boingers only came in with the 90/110. If you must have coils then buy a 90. A series can be made to ride nicely with parabolic leafs but it ain't no SUV. I'd advise a bit more research before parting with money on one of these trucks as, I'm sure Nick will testify to this, there is a lot to learn and an educated buyer is a happy owner.

Converting a series truck to coils is probably not a practical solution. You need to make a decesion if you want a series truck or if you would be better suited to a defender(coil trucks) Where in NY are you located?

Amen! there's a lot of trucks out there for a lot of money and if thats not a concern then you can find something asap...but if you want to make an informed decision, then it takes some time, a lot of patience and some reading. I've been reading (and loving) the Restoration Manual which has a great section on finding and buying old rovers - what to look for, etc. Here are a few of the threads that have helped me from this board: Shamless plug for two of my own http://www.roversnorth.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6566 http://www.roversnorth.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6393 Tread on someone looking at a IIa http://www.roversnorth.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6342 and everyone loves the rover p0rn here http://www.roversnorth.com/forums/sh...?t=4702&page=2 For shopping: http://www.roversnorth.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=28 http://www.landroverexchange.com/ Craigslist is also a nice resource - google craigs list search engines - there are tools out there to search multiple locations at once. I nerded-out and wrote my own code to scour the net for series trucks, its been worthwhile as most are not in my home state. Good luck - the hunt is 1/2 the fun (and 1/2 the frustration too )

I previously owned a '67 109 station wagon with the safari top - real cool and could carry a few people nicely. I now own a '68 109 regular (pick-up) with a pick-up top, a full hard top (not safari) and a full canvas top. I believe I now have the best situation as I basically have many vehicles in one awesome ride. I run the pick-up top in the winter and switch over to canvas once it warms up. I really like the 109 size as it offers a little more leg room, and can carry a lot more stuff. Now fitted with parabolic leafs, it rides like, well, a series land rover with parabolics.... it is what it is, but it's sure fun! As mentioned, you should do a lot more research before you buy - try to find one of us locally who can get you in a truck so you can get the feel of it. There isn't much like riding in a Series Land Rover.

What's it for and does it actually work? others have answered the function so I'll throw in my 2cents on if it works. nice part on a 109 is that 2 vents are above the rear seat so air hits that area directly and in my case, the 2, 4-paw drive Rovers sitting back there like it. the other 2 vents are in the rear seating area so that keeps that area "air circulated" or AC. it is a nice feature when the temp is "nice" for you - it also can be like a convection oven when it is too hot! I have a 109 safari top riding on parabolics (new style leaf springs) and it is quite comfortable to drive. I've looked at converting to coils and is not worth it in my opinion. The advantage to coils is better articulation of the axles so in hard core off-road excursions the coils are better at keeping all 4 in contact with the ground. It all depends on where you plan to drive. The extra skin on the top does keep it cooler and adds extra protection agains leaks but does somehow manage to get a lot of abuse (saves the real roof from abuse). If you plan to add a full rack then maybe it's not as much of an issue but the vents are nice.

Land Rover sees revival ahead of Jaguar relaunch

The latest Range Rover SUV [JLR KOREA]

The rise in popularity comes at an appropriate time, since Jaguar is set to make a big comeback in the Korean market next year as an EV-dedicated brand.

[exclusive] land rover boutique showroom to open in hanam this year, jaguar land rover korea unveils fully revamped range rover sport suv.

That’s the second sharpest on-year growth for an imported brand, after Lexus, which saw a 78.8 percent surge in sales.

The newest Range Rover was the biggest contributor. As the first, fully revamped version in nine years, over 3,500 Range Rover SUVs were sold in Korea in the last year alone, a 122 percent surge compared to the previous year.

The Defender SUV also added to the result. A total of 1,045 Defender SUVs were sold last year, the first time its sales surpassed the 1,000 mark.

JLR aims to maintain its growth in Korea by offering cheaper vehicles and more electric options.

“In Korea, the hybrid Range Rover will be the most anticipated lineup for the year,” said a JLR Korea spokesperson.

The Range Rover Evoque also hit Korea, offering customers a cheaper and lighter option.

JLR in December opened Korea’s first Range Rover boutique showroom at Starfield Mall in Hanam, Gyeonggi, as a business strategy to target young customers.

The showroom not only displays cars on sale but also offers customers a type of exhibition where they can experience the value of the brand, JLR Korea said.

The emphasis on the Land Rover line comes as Jaguar closed all dealerships in Korea last year amid plunging sales. A total of 4,125 Jaguar cars were sold in 2017, but that dropped to 163 in 2022. Only 54 Jaguar cars were sold last year.

The Jaguar brand is slated to be relaunched in Korea next year with only EV lineups.

Its first EV model for release in the domestic market is expected to be a four-door GT model based on the Jaguar Electrified Architecture platform, according to Robin Colgan, managing director of JLR Korea.

“Jaguar will make a comeback as a luxury EV brand, and high-value cars will be sold in small quantity,” Colgan said.

In exchange for a lunar rover, japan will get seats on moon-landing missions, japan is making a significant commitment to the us-led artemis program..

Stephen Clark - Apr 11, 2024 12:30 pm UTC

Artist's illustration of a pressurized lunar rover design conceived by Toyota and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

On the sidelines of the state visit by the Japanese prime minister to Washington this week, US and Japanese officials have signed an agreement to cement a partnership that will pave the way for a Japanese astronaut to walk on the Moon.

The Japanese astronaut, still unnamed, will become the first international astronaut to walk on the Moon under the auspices of the NASA-led Artemis program. Astronauts from NASA's other major partners on Artemis—the European Space Agency (ESA), Canada, and the United Arab Emirates—will also get a chance to fly to the Moon, either to the planned Gateway space station in lunar orbit or on trips to the surface.

But Japan will get the first international seat on a lunar landing mission, President Biden announced Wednesday during a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Other topics on the agenda for the official visit included deepening economic, military, scientific, and educational ties between the two nations.

"Those ties stretch up to the Moon, where two Japanese astronauts will join future American missions, and one will become the first non-American ever to land on the Moon," Biden said.

An RV for the Moon

With international partnerships, NASA's preference is to operate through barter arrangements with other space agencies.

On the International Space Station program, NASA and Russia's space agency have a no-funds-exchanged agreement to provide seats for US astronauts on Russian Soyuz spacecraft and seats for Russian cosmonauts on US spaceships flying to and from orbit. NASA doles out seats for space station missions to ESA, Japan, and Canada based on each partner's share of the lab's operating costs.

This new agreement between the US and Japan is similarly transactional. Japan will oversee the development of a pressurized lunar rover to ferry astronauts across the lunar surface. This is a significant commitment. It will take the better part of a decade to deliver the pressurized rover to the Moon. Japanese officials have not yet disclosed how much it will cost.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has been working with Toyota and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for several years on the design of a pressurized rover. The vehicle would be roughly the size of two minibuses parked side by side, measuring nearly 20 feet (6 meters) long, 17 feet (5.2 meters) wide, and 12.5 feet (3.8 meters) tall. Its interior cabin could offer "comfortable accommodation" for two people, or four in an emergency, according to Toyota .

Mobility is important for NASA's long-term goals at the Moon , which include surveying and harvesting resources like water ice and eventually building a lunar base on the surface.

The pressurized rover concept, which Toyota calls the "Lunar Cruiser," could explore the moon with astronauts inside for up to 30 days at a time. Crew members will be able to take off their spacesuits and work inside the vehicle in regular clothing. When astronauts aren't onboard, operators could remotely control the rover from a separate spacecraft or from Earth. Japanese officials aim to deliver it to the Moon in 2031, where it will operate for 10 years.

"It's a mobile habitat," said Bill Nelson, NASA's administrator. "It's a lunar lab, a lunar home, and a lunar explorer. It's a place where astronauts can live, work, and navigate the lunar surface, leading to magnificent discoveries for all of us. What better representation of the power of partnership than this vehicle? It's going to lead us to cover ground we've never covered before, because they'll be out and can stay for several days on the surface."

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and US President Joe Biden meet at the White House on Wednesday. (Photo by Andrew Harnik/Getty Images)

In exchange for Japan providing the pressurized rover for NASA's use, NASA will assign two seats for Japanese astronauts on future Artemis landing missions.

"An implementing arrangement has been signed on this occasion, and the provision of the lunar rover by Japan and the allocation of two astronaut flight opportunities to the lunar surface to Japan were confirmed," Kishida said through a translator. "Under the Artemis program, I welcome the lunar landing by a Japanese astronaut as the first non-US astronaut (on the Moon)."

The pressurized rover is separate from NASA's unpressurized Lunar Terrain Vehicle, which will be more akin to the rovers Apollo astronauts drove around the Moon more than 50 years ago. Last week, NASA announced three industrial teams to refine their concepts for these smaller commercially developed unpressurized rovers.

Volkswagen, Land Rover, among those paying millions in fines for missing CO2 targets

Avatar for Jennifer Mossalgue

European automakers including Volkswagen and Jaguar Land Rover had to pay $552 million in fines for missing CO2 emission targets in 2020, the first year new regulations were put in place, according to a new report.

While CO2 emissions pooling among companies and making more BEVs have radically slashed those fines in recent years, the next big push will be next year, as targets tighten again.

In 2020, the first year new regulations were put in place, European automakers paid about €510 million ($552 million) in fines for missing their CO2 targets, according to Automotive News Europe .

Volkswagen and Jaguar Land Rover were among the hefty fine payers, with VW saying that it had paid more than €100 million ($106 million) in fines for missing its 2020 target by 0.75 grams per km. In October 2021, Jaguar Land Rover said that it had paid a fine of about £35 million, or about $43.5 million, after missing its target by about 3 grams/km.

Added to the list are Suzuki, Subaru, Bentley, DR Motor, Lamborghini and McLaren, although exact fines paid by each automaker were not determinable.

From Automotive News Europe :

Suzuki missed its target by 10.4 g/km, according to EU figures, translating to a fine of nearly €1,000 per vehicle. With 160,570 registrations counting toward the target, fines would be about €160 million euros. Subaru missed its target by 34 grams, or a fine of €3,230 per vehicle. With 16,176 registrations, fines would be about €52 million.

The CO2 target for 2020 was 95 grams per km on the old NEDC test cycle, or about 120 g/km on the new WLTP cycle. It’s a highly complex system too with scores of entities with individual targets, including regional subsidiaries or van and truck divisions, etc. Each automaker, too, has a target based on mass, meaning heavier cars and SUVs are allowed to register higher emissions.

Failure to comply with the rules comes at a cost, a €95 ($102) fine for every vehicle registered in the EU, multiplied annually by each CO2 g/km above the target. That money goes into an EU general fund, the report added.

To avoid paying fines, automakers have used a strategy of joining together with other brands in emission pools, with some partnering with companies prioritizing or only selling EVs, such as JLR and Honda joining with Tesla, or VW joining with SAIC. That strategy, in addition to making and selling more BEVs in recent years, has helped automakers avoid fines. In 2021, companies paid €10 million, according to the report, so a substantial drop.

Looking at 2022, the latest results available, which were released by the European Commission in March, the only manufacturer of the 91 registered automakers to miss its target was Bugatti. Since the company only sold 30 cars in Europe that year, they let Bugatti off the hook.

In 2025, the EU will require a 25% reduction of fleet emissions from new passenger cars sold in Europe, or an overall figure of 93.6 g/km on the WLTP cycle, compared to 2021 figures. From 2030-34, the figure will be 49.5 g/km, a 55% decrease from 2021. In 2035, only zero-emission vehicles can be sold in the EU – that is, i f automakers aren’t successful in their push to change that .

Japanese astronauts will join NASA moon landings in return for lunar rover

'The science and education ties between Japan and the United States ... stretch up to the moon.'

The first non-American to walk on the moon will be a Japanese astronaut , based on a new agreement between the United States and Japan. U.S. President Joe Biden announced the goal during a state visit by Japan's prime minister, Kishida Fumio, on Wednesday (April 10). "The science and education ties between Japan and the United States ... stretch up to the moon , where two Japanese astronauts will join future American missions, and one will become the first non-American ever to land on the moon," said Biden, speaking from the Rose Garden at the White House. "In the first half of the 1960s, when I was in the United States, it was the dawn of space development in the United States. I am one of all those who were so excited in the U.S. by the spectacular challenge in space," said Fumio. "Under the Artemis program , I welcome the lunar landing by a Japanese astronaut as the first non-U.S. astronaut."

To date, only 12 humans — all Americans — have landed on the moon as part of NASA's Apollo program , from 1969 to 1972. The U.S. Artemis program seeks to return astronauts to the moon as soon as late 2025, with the first landing targeted for the program's third mission in 2026. The four-member Artemis 2 crew includes the first woman, the first person of color and first non-American to fly to the moon , the latter a Canadian. The new Lunar Surface Exploration Implementing Arrangement signed by NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and Japan's Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Masahito Moriyama does not specify on what Artemis lunar landings missions the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency ( JAXA ) astronauts will fly, but does note that the flights rely on "important benchmarks" being met. "Japan will develop for NASA's use a pressurized rover ," said Nelson in a video statement. "It is going to lead us to cover ground we've never covered before, because [the astronauts] will be out and can stay for several days on the surface. That means cover it literally, scientifically and diplomatically."

Since 2019, JAXA and Toyota have been collaborating on the development of a pressurized lunar rover that incorporates Toyota's fuel cell technology to provide power to the vehicle. The " Lunar Cruiser ," which was named after Toyota's Land Cruiser, is designed to serve as a camper van for multi-day excursions. "It is a mobile habitat, it's a lunar lab, a lunar home and a lunar explorer. It's a place where astronauts can live, work and navigate the lunar surface, leading to magnificent discoveries for all of us," said Nelson. Japan will not only provide the new pressurized rover, but also operate it on the lunar surface, with or without astronauts on board. The Lunar Cruiser , which NASA will launch and deliver to the moon, is expected to ready by 2031 for use by the Artemis 7 crew and then serve subsequent missions over the course of 10 years. "The pressurized rover will be a powerful contribution to the overall Artemis architecture as Japan and the U.S. go hand in hand with international and industry partners to the lunar surface and beyond," said JAXA President Hiroshi Yamakawa. "JAXA is ready to assist MEXT and push this forward with our science and technological expertise to establish sustainable human presence on the moon."

The Japanese rover is intended to complement a smaller, unpressurized vehicle now being developed by three U.S. companies. Intuitive Machines , Lunar Outpost and Venturi Astrolab are each working on concepts for a Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV) for use by Artemis astronauts on shorter range excursions. In addition to landing two Japanese astronauts on the moon, NASA and JAXA have previously agreed to fly a JAXA crew member to the lunar orbit Gateway in return for Japan providing the human-tended platform's environmental control and life support systems, as well as augmenting its cargo transportation needs. JAXA currently has five active astronauts — Satoshi Furukawa, Akihiko Hoshide, Kimiya Yui, Takuya Onishi and Norishige Kanai — and in 2023, recruited two more candidates — Makoto Suwa and Ayu Yoneda — to train for future moon missions. "What better representation of the promise of partnership than President Biden's announcement today that America will no longer walk on the moon alone," said Nelson.
