Need a New Summer Road Trip? Try the Tennessee Whiskey Trail

Nelson's Green Brier whiskey distillery

Sure, by now everyone who is reading this has probably heard of/been on/ been on multiple times the Kentucky Bourbon Trail . It is an American classic. You get to see the heritage of American alcohol while traveling across the Bluegrass State. Just a few hours south, though, the Tennessee Distillers Guild has officially launched their own whiskey trail, highlighting twenty-five distilleries across the state.

In a statement about the launch, President of the Tennessee Distillers Guild (TDG) Kris Tatum called the trail a “joint effort by all of our Guild members to feature Tennessee whiskey and moonshine, as well as the craftsmen and women that make them.”

From visiting whiskey giant Jack Daniels in Lynchburg to smaller operations like George Dickel in nearby Tullahoma to even smaller craft operations like Knox Whiskey Works or Post Modern Distilling in Knoxville, whiskey drinkers are sure to find something they enjoy. (If they think they won’t, then they’re pretty much designating themselves as DD, which makes this a win-win situation regardless.)

To help those looking to visit all of the distilleries in one trip—and, let’s be real, it’s not that big of a state, so why wouldn’t you?—the TDG put together a ten-day itinerary, taking you to each and every distillery on the trail. For this trip, you start in Nashville before heading to Knoxville and other points before ending the trip in the birthplace of rock and roll, Memphis.

If you’re not planning to do the full ten-day tour (or at least not all at once), you can pick up a free Tennessee Whiskey Trail booklet on their website . For each distillery you visit, you’ll get a stamp in your passport. When you’ve collected all twenty-five stamps, you’ll be rewarded with a sweet gift commemorating your whiskey knowledge and determination.

For many occasions, be it an anniversary, birthday, work promotion, or just any old Thursday, we love to splurge on a truly great bottle of wine. To be sure, there are many options to choose from when it comes to prestigious bottles, and selecting just the right one is often part of the fun. But when looking for that splurge-worthy bottle, have you ever noticed that white wines are more often far less expensive than red wines? No, it isn't just in your imagination. The truth is, white wines - even the extraordinary, award-winning, impeccable bottles - are generally far less expensive than red wines of the same caliber. But why?

There is a simple reason white wines are generally cheaper than red. The production of white wine is a far less arduous and labor-intensive process than that of red wine. The white winemaking steps are shorter and less involved and, therefore, more cost-effective at the top, which trickles down onto the wine's price tag. Red winemaking has many labor-intensive steps that white winemaking doesn't (as often) entail, such as barrel aging and cellar storage. And, of course, the costlier the production process, the more expensive the product will be. Simply put, white wine is easier to make and, therefore, cheaper. Don't judge the price tag

Sangria is one of the easiest ways to uplevel your wine-drinking experience. Its versatility means you can use practically any wine you have at your disposal. Red, white, or even bubbly–it can all be turned into sangria.

But let's be real here: not all sangrias hit the mark. So keep reading if you want to learn how to make sangria that will impress your friends and unlock the secrets to making great drinks for any party.  The art of crafting the perfect sangria recipe

You might not immediately think of whiskey as a summery spirit, and we get that. When you imagine nuanced single-malt Scotch whisky or spicy, warming rye whiskey, you likely envision a cold (possibly snowy) evening. You probably also have thoughts of drinking it neat. What about using whiskey as a summertime mixer?

If you only reach for gin, vodka, tequila, and rum for your mixing needs during the warmer months, you’re missing out. That’s because myriad blended Scotch whiskies, single malts, rye whiskeys, bourbons, and various other types of whiskey are perfect for mixing. Don’t believe us? There are countless summer whiskey cocktails perfect for now until the leaves start falling (and beyond). Our favorite summer whiskey cocktails

BRUSHY MOUNTAIN DISTILLERY

The world's first (legal) prison distillery

Welcome to the end of the line.

Brushy Mountain was the last place you wanted to find yourself – right in the middle of Tennessee’s first maximum-security prison holding the state’s most violent murderers, robbers, and rapists for more than a century. With some sentences for 200 years or more, most of the men who walked through its gates would never be walking out again. Tours are self-guided, and former prison guards and former inmates will be nearby to answer any questions or share their stories. You’ll be provided with a map of the prison grounds as well. There are more than 30 stations, each containing the story of what happened in that particular spot. Some detail violent acts. Others describe the times when family members came to visit. Others still offer a glimpse inside the troubled minds of the hardened criminals who served time at Brushy.   As you move from one station to another, you'll be able to imagine what life would have been like behind these walls. The men they held had committed unforgivable crimes. Somehow, somewhere, their lives took a wrong turn, but they still had souls... The distillery is free to visit and separate from the prison tour. There's also a tasting bar located in the gift shop.   * You must be 21 years of age or older and have a valid state ID to sample. We look forward to seeing you when you come visit Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary. It will likely be an experience you carry with you the rest of your life.

The 10 Best Distilleries on the Tennessee Whiskey Trail

' src=

Touring Tennessee whiskey distilleries is a great way to learn about Tennessee whiskey: how it’s produced, who produces it, and of course, what it tastes like.

Whiskey production has long been part of Tennessee tradition, ever since Scottish and Irish immigrants moved to Tennessee and brought their distilling practices with them.

The prohibition movement happened, though, and the Tennessee whiskey industry was badly hit. Even though Prohibition was lifted, only Jack Daniel’s and George Dickel were able to reopen and rebuild.

Tennessee legislation eventually changed and there are now around thirty distilleries in the state. The Tennessee Whiskey Trail was established to promote these distilleries as well as Tennessee whiskey culture.

In this article, let’s take a look at the Tennessee Whiskey Trail and the best distilleries on the trail.

What is the Tennessee Whiskey Trail?

Inspired by the Kentucky Bourbon Trail , the Tennessee Whiskey Trail is a selection of 26 Tennessee whiskey distilleries ranging from boutique-sized distilleries to huge international operations that are producing a variety of whiskey, bourbon, gin, vodka, rum, moonshine, and of course, Tennessee Whiskey.

Launched in 2017, it’s a monumental joint effort by the Tennessee Distillers Guild to promote Tennessee whiskey: the history, culture, art, and people involved in whiskey-making.

Along the way, visitors get to experience Tennessee: beautiful landscapes, historic landmarks, and Southern charm.

What Is Tennessee Whiskey?

Before you explore Tennessee whiskey distilleries, here’s a brief explainer of some of the products you’ll encounter.

Whiskey , in general, is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from a fermented grain mash that is aged in oak barrels.

The differences among whiskeys lie in the types of grain and the proportions of each grain used in the mash, the distilling process, the type of wood used in the aging barrels, and many other aspects of its production.

Bourbon is whiskey made in the USA, made from mash that’s at least 51% corn, aged in new charred white oak barrels, and had no additional coloring or flavoring.

Tennessee whiskey is whiskey made in the USA filtered through sugar maple charcoal before aging in a process called the Lincoln County Process.

Moonshine , affectionately called “white lightning,” is a clear, unaged whiskey with at least 80% corn base and extremely high alcohol content. It got its name from its illegal origins during Prohibition (made under cover of night, in the moonlight) but is now being produced legally.

Top 10 Distilleries on the Tennessee Whiskey Trail

Distilleries in middle tennessee.

Middle Tennessee offers a mix of urban and small-town experiences, and the distilleries in this area reflect that as well.

From distilleries producing internationally known brands to small craft distilleries, you’ll have plenty of options to enjoy a sip of Tennessee whiskey.

If you’re already planning to go to Nashville for a weekend , you can set aside one day or half a day to tour Nashville distilleries.

There are tour companies right in Nashville offering whiskey tours that take you through Nashville distilleries. Check out Tennessee Whiskey Experience by Tennessee Whiskey Tours, or Tennessee Whiskey Trail Tours by Mint Julep Experiences. You can also plan your own Nashville distillery itinerary with Whiskey Trail Tours .

Here are the can’t-miss distilleries in Middle Tennessee.

1. Jack Daniel Distillery

Jack Daniel Distillery

If you can only visit a single Tennessee whiskey distillery on your trip, make it this one.

Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 Tennessee Whiskey is one of the most recognizable whiskey bottles in the world, and it’s made in the Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg. Founded in 1866, it’s the very first registered distillery in the US.

This is where the so-called Lincoln County Process originated, and there’s simply nowhere better to learn about it than here.

The Distillery may be the main attraction here, but you don’t want to miss local Lynchburg favorites such as Miss Mary Bobo’s Boarding House and Restaurant and the Lynchburg Hardware & General Store, where Jack Daniel’s memorabilia are sold.

3. Prichard’s Distillery

Prichard’s Distillery handcrafts their American distilled spirits in small batches, with their quality rums and whiskeys being distilled in copper pots, a technique that has been around for more than a hundred years, and stored in charred white oak barrels.

Small-batch distilling means stricter, more hands-on quality control by the master distiller, resulting in flavors that are human-approved.

Their Tennessee whiskey is the only Tennessee whiskey labeled as such to not to undergo the Lincoln County Process, due to an exemption in the law.

The first Prichard’s Distillery location was opened in 1999 by owner and master distiller Phil Prichard, a descendant of Benjamin Prichard who opened and operated Prichard’s Distillery back in 1825.

4. H Clark Distillery

H Clark Distillery

If Jack Daniel, George Dickel, and Benjamin Prichard are Tennessee whiskey legends, H Clark Distillery is one of the new players.

H Clark Distillery is a small-batch distillery that opened in 2014, making it the first legal distillery in Williamson County in over 100 years.

Their spirits are produced in the old town Granary, the same building local farmers used to store grains before loading them into trains for export.

Opened in 2016 by Lee and Lynlee Kennedy, they only use local grains and limestone-filtered water to create their signature products.

The retail shop and tasting room are housed in a log home originally built in 1829.

Make sure to visit the distillery on the last Friday of the month to catch a Still House Session, featuring a food truck, drink options, and local songwriters and artists.

Distilleries in East Tennessee

Eastern Tennessee is home to the Great Smoky Mountains, Dollywood Amusement Park, bluegrass music, and moonshine. When laws relaxed in 2009, Tennessee Moonshiners of the Great Smoky Mountains came out of the woods to share their once-secret batches with the public in craft distilleries.

Local brewers and distillers talk about moonshine, as well as their relatives and ancestors who made moonshine with pride, not minding moonshine’s illicit origins. For them, moonshine is part of their family history and legacy.

Nowadays, distilleries in East Tennessee aren’t just producing moonshine; there are a variety of whiskey products, spirits, and even flavors to choose from.

Here are some of the distilleries in East Tennessee that you need to visit to know more about moonshine culture.

6. Chattanooga Whiskey Experimental Distillery

Chattanooga Whiskey

Opened in 2015 right in the heart of Chattanooga, Chattanooga Whiskey Experimental Distillery is the first legal distillery in Chattanooga in over 100 years.

Their flavored moonshines are inspired by flavors from kitchens across the Old Mill Square as well as the Old Mill Candy Kitchen and Creamery.

Sample up to 8 of them for free in their moonshine sample bar.

But Old Forge Distillery is more than just moonshine. They now have plenty of other product offerings, including rum, vodka, bourbon, gin, and flavored cream liqueur.

Old Forge Distillery combines history with innovation.

Distilleries in West Tennessee

Located between the Tennessee and Mississippi Rivers, West Tennessee is famous for its iconic artists, unique outdoor experiences, and historic landmarks.

If Nashville is known as Music City and East Tennessee is known for bluegrass, Memphis is known as the home of the blues and rock ‘n’ roll.

Here is the only distillery in West Tennessee (hopefully not the last).

10. Old Dominick Distillery

Old Dominick Whiskey was founded in 1866 by Domenico Canale, and in 1880, the Dominick Toddy was born. Prohibition came and went, Domenico Canale passed away, and the recipe was lost in time.

When an unopened bottle of Old Dominick Toddy was discovered in 2013, Chris and Alex Canale, Domenico’s great-great-grandchildren, planned to open a world-class distillery in Domenico’s honor.

In 2016, they produced the first legal batch of Tennessee whiskey in Memphis since the Prohibition.

Today, Old Dominick Distillery is a 100-year-old, 50,000-square-foot building complex with a whiskey distillery, tasting room, retail spirits shop, meeting and event space, and a bar and restaurant on the rooftop.

If you’ve been to a distillery tour before, you might have expectations for Tennessee distilleries. However, the laws that dictate what a distillery can and cannot provide may vary from one state to another. Here are some highlights of what you can expect on your visit.

Tennessee distilleries can serve samples up to half an ounce per product offering. Distilleries that have more than a few products usually limit the number of samples they give out to 8 or 10.

Samples may be free while on a tasting tour, but some distilleries may still charge for them.

They may also serve mixed drinks as long as the spirit is made at the distillery.

Tennessee whiskey distilleries can sell bottles at the distillery itself, up to 25 750-mL bottles per visitor per day.

Get your Tennessee Whiskey Trail passport from your first stop on the trail, or download the official app . Collect ink stamps on your physical passport or digital stamps on your app and earn a free t-shirt when you complete them.

You’ll also hear some of these terms when you visit the whiskey distilleries. Here’s what they mean.

  • Angel’s share – the amount of liquid lost in the barrel while aging
  • Barrel proof – the proof whiskey is aged before being bottled
  • Dram – a shot of whiskey
  • Extraction – when the liquid pulls in other flavors, such as from the charcoal in the Lincoln County Process, or the oak barrel where it ages
  • Mash – the mixture of cooked grains and water before yeast is added to start fermentation
  • Mash bill – the recipe; the grains and their ratios used to make whiskey
  • Proof – the measurement of beverage alcohol on a scale of 200. For instance, a 100 proof spirit contains 50% alcohol by volume.
  • Whiskey thief – a tubular instrument used by a master distiller to extract small portions of whiskey from a barrel for sampling
  • Whiskey flight – a sample serving of multiple whiskeys designed to provide variety and compare a range of spirits

Tips When Planning Your Trip

Here are some tips to have the best experience possible.

Leave the children at home or at the hotel. Most distillery tours aren’t exactly kid-friendly. Kids would probably get bored with the explainers, there may be equipment or sections of the distillery that are dangerous to them, and other adults on the tour may not be understanding when your kids start to fuss.

Use the Tennessee Whiskey Trail’s Trip Planner . There many different ways you can explore the Tennessee Whiskey Trail, and they know it.

Their Trip Planner contains suggestions of trail routes you can take, depending on what type of experience you want to have, including sightseeing and restaurant recommendations.

If you want to visit all 26 distilleries in a single trip, they have a 10-day itinerary. Or if you only have a weekend free, you can plan around the Nashville distilleries, or around East Tennessee.

They also have suggested itineraries for those who want to experience the great outdoors, Tennessee’s foodie scene, or the music scene.

If you’re making the trip arrangements yourself, call ahead. Making an appointment at least a day ahead ensures that you have a definite timeslot on that day. They can give you more information about what to expect from your tour. Plus, it’s just good manners.

Transportation is important. The last thing you want to be doing on a whiskey distillery tour is counting your glasses or doing a sobriety test after every distillery visit.

If you’re in a city, plan to take public transportation. In the countryside? Designate a sober driver or hire a car and driver.

Look but don’t touch! Remember that you’re not visiting a museum; everything is operational. You might burn yourself on a still, or ruin a perfectly good batch of whiskey if you dip your fingers into their mash tanks.

Keep an open mind. The distillery staff know their own products more than you do. Be open to their suggestions about what you should try.

Sip, don’t shoot. You didn’t go to a frat party and that whiskey flight is not a line of shots you’re asked to knock back on a dare.

A whiskey tasting room is where you can savor the whiskey; swirl it around the glass, smell its aroma, and savor the taste on your tongue.

Space out your visits. Stop for meals and snacks in between your visits, and bring plenty of water to hydrate. Don’t stack your day with back-to-back tastings; showing up at a distillery obviously intoxicated or drunk is a surefire way to be turned away or kicked out.

The best time to go on a whiskey trail is during the spring or fall. Summer is peak tourist season for Tennessee, especially in the Nashville area. Hotels and other accommodations are fully booked and expensive, and getting a timeslot for a distillery tour may be nearly impossible.

Spring in Tennessee can be quite beautiful when flowers are in full bloom. Fall offers another kind of beauty when the leaves dramatically change color. For both seasons, day temperatures are mild, humidity is low, and the nights are cool.

Explore the Tennessee Whiskey Trail Soon!

Whiskey culture is part of Tennessee’s history, now part of their present development, and someday will be their legacy to the country and to the world.

Going on the Tennessee Whiskey Trail and visiting the distilleries is really the best way to explore all three Grand Divisions of Tennessee, soak up their different cultures and traditions, and appreciate all their different whiskey products.

Don’t limit yourself to those on this list or even the Tennessee Distillers Guild’s recommendation; design your own itinerary and make your own memorable Tennessee experience!

Which distillery are you most interested in visiting? Which products are you most interested in trying? Or have you already gone on this trail? How was the experience? Tell us what you think in the comments!

Best Whiskey Distilleries and Tennessee Whiskey Tours

Best Tennessee Whiskey Distilleries & Whiskey Tours for 2024

Chris Stapleton sang about it for a reason. Tennessee whiskey is some of the smoothest and richest on the market, and on top of incredible barbeque and some of the greatest musical artists the United States has ever known – like Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin – it’s one of the state’s many pride and joys.

There are a million and one reasons to visit the great Volunteer State, but whatever your occasion is, you can’t go wrong with adding a stop or two along Tennessee’s phenomenal whiskey trail to your trip.

On top of famous whiskey labels like Jack Daniel’s that have won the world over, there are dozens of distilleries in the state with their own stories just waiting to be uncovered. If you’re looking at adding a little local culture to your trip, then keep reading for our list of the best whiskey distilleries in Tennessee.

Jack Daniel Distillery: The Oldest Whiskey Distillery in Tennessee

Winetraveler Rating:

133 Lynchburg Hwy, Lynchburg, TN 37352

(931) 759-6357

Let’s begin our journey with the obvious: if you’re adding a distillery visit and whiskey tasting to your trip to the Volunteer State, then it ought to include Jack Daniel’s. Established in historic Lynchburg way back in 1866, this iconic stop on the whiskey trail is the oldest registered distillery in the country.

Luckily for you fellow whiskey lovers out there, Jack Daniel Distillery offers tours seven days a week, and being equal parts history and whiskey, taking the drive down to Lynchburg will give you one of the best distillery tours in the state. If you’d prefer to avoid driving and would like a private, guided experience in a comfortable vehicle, arrange a tour direct to the distillery from Nashville .

Who would have thought the country’s most popular whiskey and its world-famous black and white label would have grown to fame and fortune in one of Tennessee’s last dry counties?

Nashville Barrel Company Distillery and Whiskey Bar

809 Heathcote Ave, Nashville, TN 37210

(615) 891-1046

There is a ton of fun to be had in Nashville, and yes, as wild as the honky tonks are, much of the fun can be found off Broadway and away from downtown’s neon lights. If you’re taking a trip to Music City and are looking for something to wash down that hot chicken, then this is the stop for you.

Even though this Nashville spot is quite young – only opening its doors in 2018 – cofounders James Davenport and Mike Hinds lead their operation with their unique cocktail of ingenuity, experience, and vision. Curious to taste some of their award-winning spirits? Nashville Barrel Co. offers flights, premium tastings, and more. If you’re looking for a more intimate tasting experience at one of the best distilleries in Tennessee, you can schedule a private tour at their Nashville location as well.

Recommended: Consider taking our recommended guided craft distillery tour along the Tennessee whiskey trail and leave the driving to someone else. You’ll meet at a central location in downtown Nashville, and all distillery entrance fees are included.

Ole Smoky Distillery

423 6th Ave S, Nashville, TN 37203

(615) 647-8272

Every time we get an itch to head back down to Music City, we always head to the Ole Smoky location on 6th and Peabody right after dropping off our bags. Not only do they make some of the best moonshine in Tennessee, but their Nashville location hosts a fun bar serving all the live country music and hot chicken that you would expect. From what we’ve heard, the Ole Smoky Pigeon Forge distillery is a pretty great time too.

Make no mistake though. Just because Ole Smoky specializes in flavored moonshine doesn’t mean they don’t distill some amazing whiskey as well. Their barrelhouse distillery in Gatlinburg makes some of the best whiskey and moonshine in Tennessee, complete with group tastings.

Old Forge Distillery

170 Old Mill Ave, Pigeon Forge, TN 37863

(865) 774-4126

We mentioned Pigeon Forge in the last section, and even though that town is mostly for tourists, they do have some great whiskey, including the Old Forge Distillery. Located in Old Mill Square, this Pigeon Forge distillery is a historic icon and has one of the oldest continually operated gristmills in the country.

Like Ole Smokey, the folks at Old Forge produce and serve a wide variety of different spirits. Bourbon is what made them famous, but if that’s not what you’re in the mood for, they offer several other award-winning drinks, such as vodka, cream liqueurs, their famous 1830 moonshine, and more.

Cascade Hollow Distilling Co.

1950 Cascade Hollow Rd, Tullahoma, TN 37388

(931) 408-2410

Cascade Hollow might not sound too familiar, but if you’re a bourbon lover like most of us are at Winetraveler, then their signature product, George Dickel, certainly ought to. When it comes to whiskey distilleries in Tennessee, Cascade Hollow is one of the most famous out there, so making a trip out to their Tullahoma location is absolutely worth your while.

George Dickel’s successors still make their bourbon in honor of their founder’s vision, and your guide can fill you in on all the steps they go through to make their Tennessee whiskey “mellow as moonlight.” Add some ice, pour some bitters, drink it neat, whatever you want; but George Dickel deserves to be enjoyed during your trip down the Whiskey Trail .

Leiper’s Fork Distillery

3381 Southall Rd, Franklin, TN 37064

(615) 465-6456

Among all of the whiskey distilleries in Tennessee, this gem in Franklin is one of our personal favorites. Maybe it’s because we’re history lovers, but there is something so inspiring about their dedication to the age-old distilling methods that Tennessee’s original Irish and Scottish settlers used. A trip to Franklin itself is worth it, but once you’re there, stop by the distillery for a glass or tasting to see what makes Leiper’s Fork so authentic and beautiful.

They also host monthly live music events called still house sessions. If you haven’t gotten enough whiskey or live music during your trip to Tennessee, then there aren’t many better ways to experience both at the same time.

Frequently Asked Questions about Tennessee Whiskey Distilleries

What is considered to be the best tennessee whiskey.

Tennessee whiskey is best known for its two biggest brands: Jack Daniel’s and George Dickel. Among these, Jack Daniel’s, particularly Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7, is arguably the most iconic and widely recognized Tennessee whiskey globally. However, if we’re talking about the “best” Tennessee whiskey in terms of quality and prestige, the conversation often turns towards more premium offerings. For example, Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Select is often highly rated for its complexity and richness. George Dickel also has high-end variants, like their Barrel Select, which is lauded for its smooth and sophisticated flavor profile. Outside these well-known distilleries, newer establishments like Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery are gaining recognition. Their Belle Meade Bourbon, though not technically a Tennessee whiskey due to not following the Lincoln County Process, has received several awards and accolades for its quality. As with any spirit, the “best” Tennessee whiskey often comes down to individual taste preferences, so it’s always a good idea to explore a variety of offerings and find what suits your palate the best.

What is the oldest whiskey distillery in Tennessee?

The title of the oldest registered distillery in Tennessee (and the United States, for that matter) goes to the Jack Daniel’s Distillery, located in Lynchburg. Founded by Jasper Newton “Jack” Daniel in 1866, the distillery is recognized for its charcoal-mellowed Tennessee Whiskey, a process known as the Lincoln County Process. However, it’s worth noting that distilling in Tennessee dates back to well before Jack Daniel’s establishment. For instance, settlers were producing whiskey in the region as early as the late 18th century. But as for legally registered and continuously operating distilleries, Jack Daniel’s holds the title.

How many distilleries are on the Tennessee Whiskey Trail?

The Tennessee Whiskey Trail, a project by the Tennessee Distillers Guild, consists of about 30 distilleries across the state of Tennessee. These distilleries vary in size and style, from large, globally recognized brands like Jack Daniel’s and George Dickel to craft distilleries. The trail was designed to connect these distilleries and provides visitors with a deep dive into the history, tradition, and novelty of Tennessee whiskey.

13 Must-Visit Distilleries To Visit Along The Tennessee Whiskey Trail

Tennessee Whiskey Trail distillery spirits

The Tennessee Whiskey Trail is a massive state-wide tour of the most notable distilleries in the state. It's the perfect way for spirit-loving travelers to experience all that Tennessee has to offer, spanning the entire length of the state from Memphis to the Smoky Mountains. There's something for everyone on the trail, from casual bootlegger-style warehouses to modern, upscale tasting rooms and everything in between. You can even get a digital "Pawsport" highlighting all the pet-friendly distilleries where you can enjoy tours and tastings with your furry best buddy.

Every distillery on the Tennessee Whiskey Trail is worth a visit a few that stand out above the rest. A truly memorable distillery experience offers visitors something more — a wide variety of spirits, unique tastings, tours, and other services, delicious food, and inspirational origin stories. If you can't make it to every distillery on the Tennessee Whiskey Trail, then check out the ones on this list for an unforgettable adventure.

Big Machine Distillery

Big Machine distills every drop of its vodka 25 times — whereas most vodkas are produced using three to seven distillations — then filters it through platinum beads for an impossibly smooth finish that's perfect for shots, cocktails, and Spiked Coolers, refreshing boozy juice pouches that are equal parts naughty and nostalgic.

But Big Machine is for more than just the vodka lovers. Other spirits distilled and aged there include rum, bourbon, moonshine, gin, and Tennessee whiskey. At the Lynnville distillery, the original location, you can take a tour, bottle your own spirit, and enjoy cocktails with your favorite four-legged friend on the 28-acre dog-friendly property. In Berry Hill, the outskirts of Nashville, you'll find the Big Machine Tavern serving a long list of classic and seasonal cocktails like alongside brunch, lunch, and dinner dishes, including The Nashville Benedict, made with poached eggs, Nashville hot chicken, and sausage gravy.

Nashville Barrel Company

Nashville Barrel Company's origin story is all about good times and good company. Three whiskey-loving friends decided to buy a batch of barrels in 2018, mainly with the intention of picking whiskey together with their wider circle of friends. But word spread fast and, by 2021, Nashville Barrel Company was producing award-winning single-barrel spirits.

Tours at the Nashville Barrel Company production facility offer varied experiences, including a standard flight in the tasting room, a premium tasting experience, a flight straight from the barrel, and a mock single barrel experience where you can bring home your own bottle of your favorite spirit thieved straight from the barrel. You and up to eight of your closest friends can even pick your own single barrel of rye, bourbon, or rum, and have it bottled the very same day with a custom logo — the perfect gift for yourself, your group, or your organization. You might even run into Stella, the mini Goldendoodle who acts as Nashville Barrel Company's president, HR, and guest outreach specialist.

At the Church Street tasting room in downtown Nashville, you can enjoy all the same tastings and tours as at the Fesslers Lane headquarters, plus blend your own whiskey after sampling a flight of selections out of the barrel. At Nashville Barrel Company, you get so much more than the standard tours and tastings — you get an unforgettable distillery experience.

Nashville Craft Distillery

Most Tennessee distilleries are known for their whiskeys, so when you find one that offers something a little further off the beaten path, it's definitely worth the effort to check it out. That's where Nashville Craft comes in. This distillery specializes in small-batch spirits made from regional ingredients. Its current offerings include three types of bourbon, two gins infused with four and seven botanical ingredients, spiced honey liqueur with ginger and cinnamon, and sorghum spirits made from Tennessee sorghum sugar cane, similar to molasses but with a subtle difference in flavor .

The tasting room is open from Tuesday to Sunday, and the hours vary by the day of the week, so check the schedule before you stop in. In addition to the usual tours, tastings, and cocktails you'll find at most distilleries, Nashville Craft Distillery has a two-day hands-on distillery experience where aspiring spirit specialists will learn the ins and outs of the business of distilling, from legal classifications of different spirits, mechanical distillery operation and maintenance, the aging process, and successful business strategies. This in-depth workshop is run by Nashville Craft Distillery's founder, Bruce Boeko, a 20-year forensic scientist whose love of experimentation and innovation is on full display during this rare behind-the-scenes distillery experience.

Old Dominick Distillery

This Memphis distillery began its journey in 1866 as a grocery wholesaler by Domenico Canale, who sold whiskey in ceramic jars under the name Old Dominick. About 150 years later, Canale's great-great-grandsons discovered an unopened bottle of Old Dominick Toddy, a fruity bourbon cordial. They were inspired to reopen the brand and became the first legal distillers of whiskey in Memphis since the end of Prohibition. Today, Old Dominick Distillery produces whiskey, bourbon, gin, and vodka at their Front Street distillery, along with a few experimental spirits from the lab of Master Distiller Alex Castle, like All the Cookies Bourbon.

Beyond the expected daily distillery tours, Old Dominick hosts a monthly Beyond the Barrel experience that offers an exclusive viewing of the distillery's aging loft and, of course, a flight of whiskey to sample along the way. The onsite bar serves signature cocktails using house spirits, including The Landing with citrus vodka, ginger syrup, and grapefruit soda; the Pink Palace with gin, red currant syrup, and Sichuan peppercorns; and bourbon cider punch with whiskey, apple cider, sweetened with honey and cranberry syrup.

Junction 35 Spirits

Junction 35, named after the train junction where loggers by day became bootleggers by night, transporting moonshine along the rails as far as they could go to evade Prohibition patrols, is Tennessee's first full distillery and restaurant. Junction 35's wide selection of spirits is distilled onsite, including gin, rum, vodka, whiskey, rye, bourbon, and even tequila. That's right — tequila, not agave. Though agave spirits must be distilled in Mexico to be called "tequila," Junction 35 partners with a distillery in Mexico to distill the blanco tequila, then ages the reposado and añejo tequilas in its own bourbon barrels, giving their own finishing touch to authentic Mexican tequila.

After your distillery tour, head over to the kitchen and bar to fill up on food and cocktails. The full restaurant features dishes like Tennessee poutine, smoked barbecue trays with Southern sides like coleslaw and stone ground cheese grits, smash burgers, and more. At the bar, you can enjoy various flights — a whiskey flight, a moonshine flight, a mixed flight including whiskey, moonshine, and vodka, and a premium flight with any four of Junction 35's top-shelf spirits — plus craft cocktails made with spirits distilled in-house. Standout bar menu offerings include the Bam Bam Hurricane, gin or moonshine mojitos, and a Tennessee margarita made with jalapeño vodka.

Brushy Mountain Distillery

Most Tennessee distilleries have whiskey and moonshine tastings and tours, but at Brushy Mountain Distillery, where End of the Line Moonshine is distilled and bottled, you get a memorable history lesson as well. Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary, a former maximum security prison, once held infamous criminals like James Earl Ray, admitted assassin of Martin Luther King, Jr. And while there are plenty of illegal moonshines made in prisons around the world, End of the Line Moonshine is the only legal one.

When Brushy Mountain closed in 2009, all its residents were transferred to another facility, and in 2017, End of the Line Moonshine opened the prison doors again. Today, you can take a tour of the distillery and have a drink at the tasting room, then (from April through November) go on a guided or self-guided tour of the prison grounds, where former guards and non-violent prisoners are standing by to give you an inside look at Brushy Mountain's dark history. For more thrill-seeking moonshine lovers, Brushy Mountain also hosts overnight paranormal tours year-round. After a night of frights, you'll definitely be ready for a drink when the distillery opens at 10:30 a.m.

Old Glory Distilling Co.

Old Glory Distilling Co., owned by Clarksville, Tennessee native Matt Cunningham, is an artisan bourbon distillery, restaurant, and silo park. Old Glory's bourbon and whiskey are the stars of the show, but its offerings don't stop there. Other spirits distilled onsite include Pinup Gin with 12 botanicals, Tennessee Vodka filtered through sugar maple charcoal, and Smooth Shine moonshine in four mouthwatering flavors.

At Old Glory, like most distilleries, you can take a tour of the site and get a behind-the-scenes look at its inner workings, but the newly opened restaurant and silo park add even more value to your visit. The restaurant serves lunch Monday through Friday, dinner seven days a week, and brunch on the weekends. Some of the rockstar spirit-inspired dishes on Old Glory's menu include egg rolls made from prime rib smoked with an oak stave, an essential element in whiskey aging, Chicken-Bourbon-Mac, and bourbon barbecue nachos. And for brunch, stop by to enjoy a bacon old fashioned or Shine mimosa. When the weather is nice, you can take it outside to the Old Glory silo park, a family- and pet-friendly outdoor space with drinks served out of an old grain silo.

Short Mountain Distillery

Short Mountain Distillery in Woodbury, Tennessee, about an hour south of Nashville, was the sixth legal distillery to open in Tennessee after prohibition was repealed. This family-owned distillery produces Tennessee whiskey, bourbon, rye, and moonshine, including a Charred Shine, briefly aged in charred oak whiskey barrels. At Short Mountain, you can take an hour-long tour, complete with a private tasting, and learn to make Short Mountain's signature cocktails in a mixology class.

But the fun doesn't stop there. Short Mountain sits on a 400-acre, dog-friendly farm where guests can play disc golf, hike on the mile-long Greenway Walking Trail loop, and even learn the history of the farm on a guided tour in a wagon pulled by mules. You can easily make a full day of it at Short Mountain, refueling at the Rye and Revelry restaurant. This is a must-visit restaurant for fried chicken in Tennessee , but if that's not your thing, there are plenty of other sensational snacks and entrees, like a fry flight with regular, beer battered, and buffalo french fries; a bourbon bacon jam burger; and chicken, pulled pork, or shrimp bowls with freshly grilled pineapple. Come early on the weekend for a satisfying brunch and cocktails before you set out exploring the distillery and farm.

Nearest Green Distillery

Nearest Green Distillery in Shelbyville is the maker of award-winning Uncle Nearest Whiskey, named after America's first Black master distiller, Nathan "Uncle Nearest" Green. Uncle Nearest, the forgotten founder of Tennessee whiskey , was a formerly enslaved person believed to have perfected the Lincoln County Process, the traditional method of filtering Tennessee whiskey through charcoal before aging. In honor of this historical claim to fame, Nearest Green continues to give back to the Black community through initiatives like the HBCU Old Fashioned Challenge, a campaign to raise $1.4 million to offer one full-ride scholarship to every Historically Black College and University in the United States.

A visit to the Nearest Green Distillery is an unforgettable experience. With a footprint of 432 acres, the grounds of Uncle Nearest have been dubbed "Malt Disney World" by the press. Onsite, you'll find Humble Baron, the longest bar in the world at 518 feet, where you can enjoy signature house cocktails, daily live music, and Sunday brunch. When you get hungry, stop by Chuck's Barrel House BBQ, open Tuesdays through Sundays, for the famous Grilled Cheese on Crack sandwich loaded with smoky pulled pork along with other barbecue favorites and southern sides.

Corsair Distillery

Some of the best origin stories start with an accident, and Corsair Distillery is no exception. Two childhood friends, Nashville natives Andrew Webber and Derek Bell, were brewing beer and wine in Bell's garage when they decided to try their hand at making a biodiesel plant from home-brewing equipment. The prototype gave them more trouble than they anticipated, and they joked that making whiskey would be a more fulfilling endeavor. Before long, it stopped being a joke, and Corsair Distillery was born.

When Corsair opened in 2010, it became Nashville's first post-prohibition distillery. Since then, Corsair Distillery has received over 800 medals at various national and international spirits competitions and other awards, including American Whiskey Distillery of the Year at the 2017 Berlin International Spirits competition. You can take a tour at both Nashville locations and sample Corsair's whiskey, rye, and gin along with local craft beers. The Clinton Street location offers freshly baked pizza to snack on while you sip, and, if you're lucky, you might run into Copper Cat, the house mouser. At the Merritt Avenue distillery, you can play party games on the outdoor deck.

Jack Daniel's

Of course, any list of Tennessee distilleries would be woefully incomplete without the legendary Jack Daniel's Distillery, one of the biggest names in whiskey and the oldest registered distillery in the United States. The Lynchburg distillery is open for tours seven days a week (except for a few major holidays — check the website before you go), but there's more than just your standard tour and tasting here.

The many tour experiences include a kid-friendly Dry County tour, and the Angel's Share tour featuring a sampling of several single-barrel whiskeys, including two limited edition offerings. But the star of the show is the Taste of Lynchburg, which starts with a tour of the Angel's Share whiskeys at the Jack Daniel's Distillery, followed by a family-style meal at Miss Mary Bobo's Boarding House (owned by Jack Daniel's), one of Tennessee's local favorite fried chicken restaurants, less than a mile away.

When you finish your distillery experience, head over to the Lynchburg Hardware and General Store. A hardware store may seem like an odd stop on the Tennessee Whiskey Trail, but don't worry — this is the place to go if you want to stock up on some Jack Daniel's souvenirs, since the distillery doesn't sell any.

Bootleggers Distillery

In Tennessee, whiskey making is often a family affair, but family-run Bootleggers Distillery takes it all to another level, boasting 16 generations of many master distillers, including the two youngest master distillers in the country. Today, Bootleggers Distillery makes whiskey, rum, and more flavors of moonshine than you can imagine, bottled in the canning jars.

The distillery offers tastings and tours, plus one extra special experience — the inventive Build a Barrel program. Here, you will get to make your own whiskey to your exact specifications from start to finish, creating your ideal mash with the help of Bootleggers team members and distilling it to your desired proof level. After whatever aging period you choose, Bootleggers will bottle your whiskey and give it a personalized label for you, and you will get a keepsake souvenir (or a special occasion sip).

Company Distilling

Tennessee was the first state to pass a Prohibition law banning alcohol sales in stores and bars. Though it was repealed in 1933, by 2009, there were still only three distilleries in the entire state. One of the founders of Company Distilling was instrumental in writing and promoting the Tennessee law that made legal craft distilling more accessible. In 2014, H Clark Distillery (the future Company Distilling) became the first legal post-prohibition distillery in Williamson County.

Today, Company Distilling's two locations produce bourbon, whiskey, gin, and beer, and limited-run and flavored spirits. Each has three unique tastings — a portfolio tasting with your choice of five spirits, a premium tasting of four Company whiskeys, and a bourbon and chocolate tasting with a selection of sweets from local chocolatier The Chocolate B'ar. The original Thompson's Station location offers a limited menu from the neighboring restaurant, Circa Grill, is available, including charcuterie, shrimp kabobs, and crawfish beignets.

The Townsend location sits next to the Townsend Greenway, a multi-use trail for hikers and bikers, making it a great place to start or finish a day of outdoor adventures. Here, you can fuel up on hot and cold sandwiches like roast beef, smoked trout, and focaccia grilled cheese from Amico Delicatessen, along with signature house cocktails. Bring your friends on Wednesday nights for trivia.

For one night only, some of the best bull riders in the world will battle the sport’s rankest bovine athletes in the ultimate showdown of man vs. beast in one of the most exciting live sporting events to witness.

During the 2023 season, the PBR will celebrate its 30 th  anniversary since 20 cowboys broke away from the traditional rodeo with the belief that bull riding could be a standalone sport. Since their trailblazing initiative, the PBR has grown into a global phenomenon awarding nearly $300 million in prize money.

In Round 1, Chandler was one of 11 riders to deliver a qualified ride. Covering  Yellow Water  (Fenzel Bucking Bulls) for 81.5 points, the Texan advanced to the championship round positioned ninth on the event leaderboard.

Chandler next went head-to-head with  Hey Bartender  (JQH Bucking Bulls-Skip & Elaine Jones), reaching the requisite 8 for an event-best 88.5 points to clinch the event win.

For his efforts, Chandler earned a crucial 37 world points. After traveling to the Volunteer State ranked No. 103 in the world, he gained 56 positions in the standings, rising to No. 47.

Other past PBR Knoxville Invitational event winners include:  Joao Henrique Lucas  (2020 – Bastos, Brazil);  Dylan Smith  (2019 – Ararat, Virginia);  Ryan Miller  (2018 – Waterloo, Indiana).

On Saturday evening, all 40 competing riders will attempt one bull each in Round 1. Following the opening round, the Top 15 will then advance to the championship round where they will attempt one final bull, all in an effort to be crowned the event champion.

Tickets for the one-day event go on sale Friday, November 4 at 10:00 a.m. ET, and start at $15, taxes and fees not included. Tickets can be purchased online at Ticketmaster.com and PBR.com, at the Thompson-Boling Arena Box Office or by calling PBR customer service at 1-800-732-1727.

East Tennessee

From roaring rivers to towering.

Breathtaking mountain scenery and true Southern hospitality are what make East Tennessee such a memorable place to visit.

Some say East TN is the cradle of bluegrass, but we can all agree that East TN is the cradle of bootleg liquor. You’ll find over ten different distilleries in the hills of East TN, and plenty of great cities and fun adventures along the way. This itinerary starts in Chattanooga and heads north up I-75  where you’ll finish in the Great Smoky Mountains. We recommend budgeting around one week in East TN if you want to see all the distilleries. If you’re just hitting up a few, then a few days should do.

Chattanooga Area

Chattanooga is a beautiful city that is set along the Tennessee River in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Chattanooga is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream locale with rock climbing, hiking and white water rafting action abound. Check out some of the area’s popular attractions. While you’re downtown, plan to spend some time at neighboring Trail distilleries  Chattanooga Whiskey Co . (formerly Tennessee Stillhouse), a micro-distillery and tasting room and Gate 11 Distillery , a micro-distillery, cocktail bar and live music venue.

Spend the afternoon shopping downtown or head to North Shore, a hip, yet historical district just north of the river. For those with a slight sweet tooth, you’ll want to check out the MoonPie General Store – a perfect stop for souvenirs for friends and family members back home!

Knoxville Area

Knoxville is the state’s third largest city behind Nashville and Memphis. Settle in near Market Square or Gay Street for a lively evening filled with music, scrumptious cuisine and a good dose of Southern hospitality. Make time to stop by the tasting room at Knox Whiskey Works near the heart of all the action in downtown Knoxville. You can sample four of their locally produced spirits, or kick back with some of their award-winning Old City Heirloom Corn Whiskey.

Just down the street, be sure to check out PostModern Distilling , an innovative, locally owned new distillery located in the historic Jackson Terminal. Specializing in spirits for the modern consumer. Crafting authentic yet edgy spirits for both experienced drinkers as well as those new to the spirits market. PostModern Distilling  features an innovative tasting room and manufacturing facility on site, as yet another destination for locals and visitors to experience something new, from tastings and tours offered along with special events and activities at the nearly 4,000 square foot facility.

45 minutes west of Knoxville you’ll find Brushy Mountain Distillery , maker of End of the Line Moonshine. Located in Petros, TN, Brushy Mountain Distillery is located inside the old Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary, which was a maximum security prison up until 2009 when it closed. Brushy Mountain is an attraction all to itself, so enjoy historic tours as well as see how their Tennessee whiskeys are made on the grounds. Some say the grounds are haunted, so might even see a ghost or two!

Sevierville Area

Keep heading east toward Sevierville by way of Thunder Road, a historic route that got its nickname as part of an undercover operation to nab moonshiners illegally producing that “good old mountain dew” during prohibition. Stop by  Old Tennessee Distilling Co. , a distillery that pays homage to the legendary route and the whiskey runners’ spirit that inspired its namesake.

Continue south, then take a short detour to Tennessee Legend Distillery in Sevierville. From flavorful Tennessee whiskies to smooth, classic White Lightning Moonshine, this distillery captures the legendary recipes of the mountains with its distinct flavors.

Enjoy the Great Smoky Mountains in Sevierville. Located in the foothills of America’s visited national park, Sevierville is within a day’s drive of over half the nation’s population. This popular mountain town is known for its high-end outlet shopping, exciting attractions and distillery tours. Try ziplining (there are more than 14 courses in the area), indulge in down-home southern cooking at roadside dives and spend time exploring historic downtown Sevierville. You’ll soon discover why Smithsonian Magazine named Sevierville one of its “20 Best Small Towns to Visit in 2015.”

Your next stop is Hartford, TN for a taste of Bootleggers Distillery ’s whiskey, which may just be the smallest batch distillery in the nation with its small-batch products brewed in 25-gallon stills.

Pigeon Forge Area

Once you get to Pigeon Forge, be sure to check out the Old Forge Distillery in The Old Mill area of town. These connoisseurs of great whiskey grind their own grains and use old-fashioned methods of distilling to craft some truly remarkable spirits. Since you’re on the cusp of the Smoky Mountains, trying some of the locally crafted moonshine is a must. If you’re brave enough, try some of their 1830 Original Unaged Corn varietal. It’s distilled with pure, local Smoky Mountain spring water which yields a slightly sweeter, smooth and well-balanced finish. After a few samples, hit the historic Old Mill Restaurant and shops next door, an 1830s-era gristmill on the banks of the Little Pigeon River transformed into a unique dining and shopping destination.

Still thirsty? Head over to the The Island in Pigeon Forge, a popular destination with many choices for entertainment, dining, shopping and lodging. Right along the entrance of the Island is the 6,000-square foot Ole Smoky Distillery , that includes an onsite still and a tasting bar, with live bluegrass music performing on the outdoor stage daily.

Gatlinburg Area

A few miles up the road from Pigeon Forge is the quaint mountain town of Gatlinburg, TN. It’s home to some of the most unique eateries, attractions, and distilleries around, as well as stunning mountain scenery any time of the year. Take a stroll along the main parkway to soak in the eccentric sights and sounds of downtown Gatlinburg. Right along the main drag are stops at Ole Smoky Moonshine  Distillery , and  Sugarlands Distilling Company .
