Trip report and photo tour: Inside EVA's Hello Kitty plane

An Eva Air Boeing 777 in Los Angeles is seen painted in the carrier's distinctive Hello Kitty livery in this photo from 2013.

40,000 FEET OVER THE EAST CHINA SEA: This isn't a normal flight, exactly. For one, the outside of our EVA Airways jet is plastered with some unusual paint. Instead of the airline's usual white, green and orange color scheme, this plane shows a giant yellow squirrel, a bear, and Hello Kitty. All are professing their love of apples.

And the outside is only where it begins.

The inside of the airplane is awash in Hello Kitty, too. Dozens of items bearing Kitty's likeness are be found from the comfort of one's seat. One of the world's most beloved characters, Hello Kitty graces headrest covers, pillow cases, safety cards, the entertainment system, flight attendant uniforms, utensils, sugar packets and more.

Not even the bathrooms provide a refuge from the Kitty-fication , featuring Hello Kitty soap. Hello Kitty tissues, and yes, even Hello Kitty toilet paper.

The experience -- and that is the word that best describes this -- begins even earlier, from the moment passengers set foot in the airport. The check-in desk? Clad in pink Hello Kitty. Bag tags and boarding passes? Stamped with Hello Kitty. The gate itself is part boarding area and part Kitty store, where passengers can drop dollars on Kitty-themed gifts to bring home to loved ones (or to keep for themselves).

The overwhelming cuteness of the flight finds young children (and some not so young folks) clutching Hello Kitty backpacks and paraphernalia. Businessmen in suits appear mortified, mystified, and maybe just a little curious at the sight before them.

Thus is the scene aboard what may be the world's cutest flight: EVA Airways Flight 105, featuring the airline's distinctive Hello Kitty service. As the jet cruises toward Taipei, it's one of only 19 such flights EVA will fly today. Each just as purrfectly cute and overwhelmingly adorable as the others.

Hello Kitty finds EVA

Hello Kitty began her life in 1974, the invention of Japanese design, product, and licensing company Sanrio . Aimed squarely at Japan's long-standing intrigue with all things cute, known as the "kawaii" aesthetic, Kitty first appeared on a vinyl coin purse.

The character was an instant hit. Kitty's appeal exploded in Japan, and then beyond as the creature grew to become a global phenomenon.

Having ballooned well beyond past that first coin purse, the Hello Kitty Empire has since extended into — or, perhaps more accurately, onto — anything and everything imaginable. Cribs to clothes, medicine kits to music videos, toilet paper to TV shows; if you can dream it, Hello Kitty has probably graced it.

Which leads back to airplanes.

Taipei, Taiwan-based EVA Airways first teamed up with Sanrio back in 2005.

"Sanrio approached us; wanted to sell the in-flight product to us in the very beginning," says Glenn Chai, Executive Vice President, EVA Planning Division.

Chai says EVA suggested taking it a step further. The airline envisioned an immersive Hello Kitty theme jet experience with characters pained on the outside and branded items filling the inside. The first Hello Kitty airplane, an Airbus A330-200, debuted in October 2005. A second was introduced one year later.

Kitty disappeared from the skies in 2009 after the initial product license ran out. But she returned in 2011 to celebrate EVA's 20th anniversary and Sanrio's 50th. The airline doubled down on the experience for Kitty's second life, expanding the in-flight experience from 40ish on-board items to over 100, and starting with three brand-new Airbus A330 jets.

The flights, says Chai, are hugely popular. Passengers regularly fly "with EVA on a route just because [it is a] Kitty flight," he says. He adds that they sell 3% better than regular flights, despite having a premium tacked onto the ticket price.

"If we operate a Hello Kitty flight, our fare is always higher than even our competitor," says Chai, "But [passengers are] willing to buy it."

Paying a premium for the experience isn't the only thing passengers are willing to do, however. Myriad Kitty- themed items have a tendency to walk away after the flight, Chai says. "All of those items, they take away. They are really crazy for that," he says of passengers on EVA's Hello Kitty flights.

To keep the experience fresh for the thousands of Kitty fans that come aboard each year, EVA rotates on-board items seasonally and switches them out entirely every other year. Several limited-edition items can only be purchased via the on board duty-free store, making them especially popular with a subset of die-hard Kitty collectors.

Chai says the rationale behind the flights is simple: "To make your journey more fun; provide a fun element to your flight."

That, and Kitty "is very profitable," Chai concedes.

Hello Kitty returning to North America

EVA currently operates six uniquely themed Hello Kitty jets: five Airbus A330s and one Boeing 777-300ER. All five of those Airbus jets serve regional destinations in northern Asia, with flights to Seoul, Shanghai, and three cities in Japan. The longer-range Boeing 777 flies -- for now -- exclusively to Paris, three times per week.

Passengers searching for Kitty-themed service from North America are out of luck, but not for much longer.

The airline announced in December that it would be add Houston to its network. EVA will introduce a brand-new Hello Kitty jet just for the occasion . EVA previously flew Kitty flights to Los Angeles before moving those flights to Paris last September.

Details on what the newest Kitty jet will look like have not yet been revealed, but the airline promised the brand-new jet "will be specially painted nose-to-tail with Texas–sized Hello Kitty and Sanrio characters."

Th e new Houston service begins on June 19 , three times weekly, before increasing to four times weekly on July 1.

Meanwhile, back on what very well may be the happiest flight on earth, lunch has just been served. A box kiddie meal, that this author willfully chose, is placed on to the tray table 20 rows deep into economy. As the box-top pops open several balls of fruit, pasta pieces and even the pancakes stare back. Every last one is shaped in the likeness of — you guessed it — Hello Kitty.

Complete Guide to the EVA Air Hello Kitty Jet Experience

by Gary Leff on June 22, 2015

Of course they make smart business decisions about the routes, and while the Hello Kitty livery draws some passengers it’s clearly planes they’re filling and drawing enough revenue that justifies the expense of the onboard product. For instance, one of their Los Angeles flights had been operated with Hello Kitty aircraft but no longer is.

The Hello Kitty Fleet

Here are the current Hello Kitty routes:

eva air hello kitty jets

There are a total of (7) Hello Kitty planes currently:

Which Hello Kitty Planes Fly Where?

eva air hello kitty jets

Hello Kitty Shining Star Jet is a Boeing 777-300ER. It features “Texas-sized” characters for its livery:

[S]tarting at the nose with Little Twin Stars Kiki and Lala, flying through the skies with their pet teddy bear while Hello Kitty and My Melody happily ride along on their own stars.

This flies Houston – Taipei – Singapore.

Hello Kitty Hand-in-Hand Jet is a Boeing 777-300ER. It’s painted with 19 characters of including Hello Kitty and Dear Daniel.

The plane used to fly Los Angeles-Taipei three days a week, and has since moved to Taipei – Paris.

Hello Kitty Apple Jet is an Airbus A330 with Hello Kitty and red and green apples. It flies Taipei – Seoul (BR159/160) and Taipei – Fukuoka (BR105/106)

Hello Kitty Global Jet is an Airbus A330 with Hello Kitty characters and travel destinations, alternates with the Magic Jet aircraft on daily flights between Taipei Songshan and Tokyo’s Haneda International Airport (BR189/191 and BR190/BR192) and also between Taipei Songshan and Shanghai Hongqiao (BR771/772).

Hello Kitty Magic Jet is an Airbus A330 with Hello Kitty and magic stars. It alternates with Hello Kiity Global Jet on daily flights between Taipei Songshan and Tokyo’s Haneda International Airport (BR189/191 and BR190/BR192 and also between Taipei Songshan and Shanghai Hongqiao (BR771/772).

Hello Kitty Happy Music Jet is an Airbus A330 featuring Hello Kitty characters and musical notes and operates between Taipei Taoyuan and Chitose (Sapporo), Japan (BR115/116) as well as Taipei Taoyuan and Guam on Tuesday and Saturday (BR/1920). It occasionally flies to Hong Kong, Macau, Mainland China and elsewhere in Asia.

Hello Kitty Speed Puff Jet is an Airbus A330 with Hello Kitty characters and fast-moving clouds, operating between Taipei Taoyuan and Tokyo Narita (BR197/198) and between Taipei Taoyuan and Hong Kong (BR857/858).

Special Amenities and Experience

There’s a dedicated Hello Kitty self-check-in area in Taipei. Passengers receive Hello Kitty boarding passes and baggage tags. Seats have Hello Kitty headrest covers, tissues, paper cups, utensils, milk bottles, snacks, handwashing liquid, hand lotion, meals and ice cream. And more . Like Hello Kitty toilet paper.

Flight attendants wear Hello Kitty aprons. They take star molds and individually craft pats of butter to be part of the Hello Kitty motif with meals. Hello Kitty is a part of meal service.

Hello Kitty is in the entertainment system. It’s on the pillows. It’s in the lavatories. There’s tremendous and painstaking attention to Hello Kitty Detail.

But What About the Inflight Product?

I’ve only been aboard an EVA Air long haul Hello Kitty 777. In that plane:

Economy has 33 inch pitch (that’s two more inches of legroom than most US airlines offer) and seating is nine across, 3-3-3, means they squeeze one fewer seat into each row.

Premium economy is eight across, and has the kind of legroom you see in domestic first class. There are footrests and double-sized armrests between seats. Meal service is upgraded.

Business class is one of the best in the sky, four across all-aisle access reverse herringbone fully flat beds. They offer pre-order meal service and currently serve Krug champange.

About Hello Kitty

I learned more about Hello Kitty than I’ve ever known before. Previously my only sense was that she’s either a little girl or a cat, and that some kids and women go crazy for her.

Hello Kitty’s actual name is Kitty White. Her birthday is November 1, but even though she has a birthday she never gets older. She was introduced in Japan in 1974, so she and I are around the same age, only we’re not.

She’s “as tall as 5 apples” and “weighs the same as 3 apples.” Her favorite food is “Mama’s apple pie.”

Hello Kitty has a boyfriend . I didn’t know this. I’m not sure whether ‘Daniel’ is lucky to be dating an international superstar or the most long-suffering character in the world.

Hello Kitty has an identical twin sister Mimmy who bakes cookies. Hello Kitty’s bow rests over her left ear. Mimmy’s bow rests over her right ear. Signaling. There’s a Hello Kitty co-brand deal with Beats by Dre. That frightens me a little.

Here’s a handy guide to Hello Kitty’s family and friends. You can click to enlarge:

Well done Gary! I certainly could have expected this kind of detailed info from “Lucky” (Ben Schlappig) who we all know is a big fan of Hello Kitty, but from you, nah?? So, I am pleasantly surprised to read all this amazing Hello Kitty info on your blog, thanks! I now feel I can answer almost any question regarding this adorable fun little character. Besides, I have a niece who loves Hello Kitty and after the new service launch from IAH, I guess I see myself flying the route in the near future!

@Gary, please add this EVA link to the post? It shows all the Routes and everything to know about Kitty, including music!!

Great post, appreciate all the detail. I never knew they put so much into the Hello Kitty plane. My daughter would love this!

Thanks, Gary, and well done!

My daughter, a recent college grad, is heading to SE Asia for a year of teaching. She’s both excited and apprehensive. Because I am the travel guru of the family, she has asked me to book her flight. When the time comes I’m putting her on EVA– what better way for a young woman (who likes cutsey-ness) to begin her trip?

Echoing a previous poster, I thought Lucky had dibs on all things Hello Kitty?! or did he cede his rights for failing to appear at the Houston press junket?

Saw one of the “Hello Kitty” A330,s in BNE on Fri 11/3/16. Great looking aircraft. Nice move EVA.

This Airline Is Hosting a Hello Kitty-themed Flight to Nowhere — and It Includes a Michelin-star Meal

The flight is to celebrate Father's Day in Taiwan.

hello kitty trip to the sky

EVA Air wants to honor Father’s Day in the most dad way possible: By turning this plane RIGHT around.

On Monday, EVA Air announced it will be honoring Father’s Day in Taiwan (celebrated on Aug. 8) by selling tickets to a flight to nowhere. The plane, decorated in Hello Kitty livery, will take off from Taipei Taoyuan Airport and will land several hours later back at the same location. All this work in an effort to get in the air again despite travel restrictions to other nations.

According to One Mile at a Time , the flight will be in the air for just under three hours. It will take off and fly toward Japan reaching a cruising altitude of 25,000 feet. It will then turn and fly over Taiwan’s eastern coastline, pass Guishan Island, the east coast of Hua, and then fly south to Eluanbi and Xiaoliuqiu, before turning around to head back.

The flight, One Mile at a Time reported, will depart at 10:30 a.m. local time and will operate under flight number BR5288, which is meant to sounds similar to “BR I love Dad” in Chinese.

Beyond just the fight itself, guests on board will also be treated to a special amenity kit filled with gifts, and will also be given the chance to purchase Hello Kitty duty-free items at a steep discount. Passengers will also be served a seafood feast designed by Michelin three-star chef Motokazu Nakamura.

Tickets for the flight to nowhere will go on sale for about $180 for economy seats and about $215 for business class seats.

This isn’t the first semi-travel experience to happen at Songshan Airport in Taiwan . In June, the airport hosted a half-day fake travel experience that allowed people to check-in, go through security, and even allowed them to board and disembark from a plane. And really, this all sounds like a fabulous “trip” right about now.

Clear Sky Resorts Arizona: Grand Canyon Glamping Domes

We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites. Read my full disclosure  here .

On our recent trip to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon we stayed in some great hotels, but we were most excited to go glamping one night at Clear Sky Resorts (aka the Dome Hotel). This experience exceeded all expectations and I highly recommend a night or two at Clear Sky when visiting the Grand Canyon. Our night here was a highlight of the whole trip and I am so excited to share my full Arizona Clear Sky Resorts review with you

Clear Sky Resorts Arizon

We are not really a camping or roughing it type family. We like to cruise , sleep in nice hotels or beautiful vacation rentals . In fact, we have never done any camping or glamping ever!

So we were excited to go visit these Grand Canyon Glamping domes at Clear Sky Resorts Arizona and have an outdoorsy and rustic experience, but with all the creature comforts of our favorite hotels.

Clear Sky Resorts Arizona

Where is the Clear Sky Resort in Arizona?

The Arizona Clear Sky Resort is half-way between the towns of Tusayan and Williams, off  Route 64 about 30 minutes south of the South Rim Grand Canyon entrance.

This is a great place to hang for a night or two on a southwest road trip , or as a home base for exploring the Grand Canyon. If you are coming from nearby, this would make a great stay-cation type place!

Clear Sky Resorts Arizona - luxury glamping near the grand canyon

What type of domes are offered at Clear Sky Resorts Arizona?

We stayed in the Pac-Man themed dome and it sounds like this is the best one. I loved the theming with everything from the wall paper, décor, and Pac man pillows. So cute!

But the best part – each pac-man dome has an old school Pac-man arcade game. We loved playing the arcade game – play as much as you would like, it’s all included!

Pac Man Dome at Clear Sky Resorts Arizona

Other themed domes include British Secret Agent (think 007), Hello Kitty, and Grand Canyon theme.

Our Pac-Man dome slept five guests, two on the main floor, and three in the loft (a twin and double mattress on the floor) and some domes sleep six or seven guests, which is perfect for bigger families.

Clear Sky Resorts’ Unique Domes

The domes at Clear Sky are really comfortable and well-appointed.  You can park near the dome and unload your luggage yourself, or the concierge, on a golf cart, can assist you with your belongings.

The domes are up on a platform and you can access the dome with a code given at check-in. There is indoor plumbing and air conditioning/heat.

When you arrive, you will see a little deck with a hammock and two chairs.

When you enter the dome, there is a large bed (not sure if it was a king or a queen, our bed was circular shaped) which faces the wall which is open to nature.

The kids slept in the loft. Go up the ladder, the kids could mostly stand up there, although I could not.

In the room we had the aforementioned Pac-man machine, a fire place, three pod chairs, and a telescope. I loved clear open-ness, this is the perfect stargazing dome. We so enjoyed the telescope in the luxury sky dome.

Pac Man Game at Clear Sky Resorts Arizona

The bathroom area had a split bath – the first area had a closet, small fridge, Keurig , and sink/mirror. Then you go in the water closet where there is a toilet, a regular normal toilet and a stand up shower.

Bathrooms in the glamping domes at Clear Sky Resorts Arizona

There was air conditioning, which also had heat. We visited in August of 2021 and although it was hot in the day, it was very cool at night, so did not need the AC all night!

It is worth noting that the domes do not have TV, and do not have Wi-Fi, although there is wifi in the Welcome Dome and I had AT&T service in the dome.

Long Island Travel Agent

Luxury Glamping Near the Grand Canyon: Amenities at Clear Sky Resorts Arizona

A stay at Clear Sky resorts is so much more than sitting in your dome. The welcome dome provides a home base for activities and socializing with other guests.

The Welcome Dome is where you check-in. It was a little tricky to find, it’s the dome with the paved parking spaces. The resort will communicate with  you via text message before you check in and you can call that number if you need anything during your stay.

In the evening, the welcome dome offers outdoor movies nights (complete with fresh popcorn), a bonfire with smore’s kits , board games, a fire pit, Wi-Fi and two complimentary beverages per dome. You can also purchase additional snacks and canned drinks here.

Welcome Dome at Clear Sky Resorts Arizona

Outside the Welcome dome there is a giant chess board, cornhole, things like that. Further up the path there is a jump pillow (like a giant inflatable attached to the ground, my kids LOVED this), aa playground, tetherball and a race track for tricycles – there are even grown up sized trikes!

Clear Sky Resorts PRO-TIP : Plan to spend time enjoying the amenities at the resort. We could have checked in at 4PM, but we did not arrive until after 5, which cut into our daylight time to enjoy the resort.

Clear Sky Resorts Arizona

Food at Clear Sky Resorts Arizona

Besides snacks for purchase at the Welcome Dome, there is no restaurant on site. There is a food truck on site from Wednesday through Sunday.

Of course we visited on a Tuesday night so we didn’t get to try the food truck!

So where else is there to eat or where to have dinner on a Monday or Tuesday night? Unfortunately, there is only one restaurant in the area unless you go up to Tusayan or down to Williams . So on our recent visit, we had dinner at the Grand Canyon Inn (only a five minute drive from Clear Sky) but a very basic restaurant. Nothing fancy.

In retrospect, we should have brought some sandwiches or food with us for a picnic. It would have been nice to not have to leave the resort, especially since we only stayed one night.

Dinner at the Grand Canyon Inn

Clear Sky Resorts Arizona Review

On our Las Vegas – Grand Canyon southwest road trip we did a ton of cool things, but our night at Clear Sky was high on everyone’s list of favorites. This was a great chance to get out of our comfort zone, unplug, and unwind.

Clear Sky Resorts Arizona Welcome Dome

The dome was so comfortable and we all loved the Pac-man game. Sitting out by the fire, looking at the stars, and watching the moon rise was an incredible experience. The staff at Clear sky was super nice and make us feel like special guests.  I would highly recommend a night or two for any families visiting this area!

Wow it looks so beautiful, I’m definitely a princess so camping is not for me but I could get behind glamping 😉

oh me too- I need heat/AC and a real bathroom

These look so cool — I think worth the drive up from Phoenix 😉 Glad you enjoyed these and appreciate the good tips for a stay here!

oh yes, would be a nice little getaway from Phoenix!

Pack my bags, I found my new travel destination. These domes look amazing and what a great way to enjoy the Grand Canyon.

OMG!! This is fancy! I’ve always wanted to try glamping…. SOOOON! Bucketlist!!

It was a totally bucket list type experience. I am so glad we went!

This looks absolutely amazing! I’ve been wanting to go to AZ. This sounds perfect

This would literally be so much fun! Did you kids miss not having amenities such as a swimming pool etc., or was the experience so unique that you didn’t miss things like that of a standard hotel?

that is a good question, since we only stayed one night they loved playing with the stuff that was there. I wish we stayed two nights – probably not a place you would stay super long, so not having a pool/tv/wifi wouldn’t be as big a deal

This is definitely my kind of glamping experience! My kids would love to sleep in a loft in a place like this. I bet the stars would have been amazing to observe from your dome.

Smaller attractions, you can come and see it when you pass by. It is not worth it for a special trip. It is suitable for taking pictures. There are no other characteristics. In fact, you can refer to Disney to engage in some doll characters. The whole game is almost 20 minutes away.

The children like it very much and I have a great time. There is a blessing to HelloKitty and self-service video equipment on the first floor, which is great. There is a painting experience and a children's playground on the second floor. The children in kitty's music class also played very well. In short, much better than expected! Worth a visit.

It can be said that I have been to the larger hello kitty. The setting in the museum is still very good, and the price is really not expensive. As a museum theme museum, the ice cream in the theme museum is more than 20 yuan. Other food prices are also very cheap, all acceptable ranges, the waiters and young ladies are very good and very enthusiastic.
