Cycling In Hoi An: Self Guided Routes

  • February 5, 2019
  • Blake Owers

Sandwiched between beautiful white sandy beaches and the Thu Bon River, Hoi An is the perfect place to jump on a bicycle and pedal your way around Hoi An. The quaint old quarter in the centre of town is very cycle-friendly.  A very short ride out of Hoi An’s Old Town soon has you cycling through rice paddies and traditional villages.

Hidden has done the “legwork” for you, testing out the plethora of different cycling routes in and around Hoi An. In this article, we provide you with our best Hoi An cycling (self-guided) tips and useful information for getting you comfortably out on your bike. We then send you out on the road along the best self-guided routes that we know. If you are looking for a guided tour then read about Hoi An’s best cycling tours here .

Bikes for rent: Hoi An cycling

Bicycle Rental In Hoi An

When you arrive in Hoi An, you will see bicycles everywhere. Cycling is a popular mode of transport for tourists wanting to explore the Hoi An and for locals to get around. There are two main hire options: fixed gear town bikes and mountain bikes.

The majority of hostels and hotels will have bikes that can be rented either free or for a very small fee—usually less than 25,000 VND (1 USD) a day. They can also be hired from countless places around town. These will all be fixed gear town bikes, some of them in a better state than others.

These bikes are great if you are planning on cycling around Hoi An’s Old Town or to the beach. However, because they don’t have any gears or suspension, they are not so good if you’re going further afield. If you’re planning on cycling into the countryside or anywhere outside of the city of Hoi An, then we definitely recommend getting a mountain bike.

Get the best one

Hiring a standard fixed gear town bicycle in Hoi An is easy. If your hotel doesn’t offer one, they can be found for rent on pretty much any street and are cheap to hire. However, if you want a proper mountain bike, then the choices are a bit more limited.

Check that a bike lock is included, the brakes work properly, that the gears (if any) change smoothly.  Ensure your tyres are fully pumped and give it a short test ride ensuring it doesn’t fall apart. If you are above average height make sure that they have a large or extra-large bike frame. Hidden recommends the following places for mountain bike hire:

The best quality, range, and best-maintained mountain bikes in Hoi An can be found at Grasshopper Adventures . All their bikes are meticulously cleaned and looked after – you can rely on them to work . They have a good range of sizes and also have kids bikes and child seats. Bike hire for the day is 150,000 VND (7.50 USD) and they also require a passport or 5,000,000 VND (250 USD) for a deposit.

The Help Expat Services have a small range of mountain bikes for hire, starting at 60,000 VND (3 USD) a day or 300,000 VND (15 USD) a week. They are well maintained and the owner is very friendly, also offering motorbike hire and a range of other useful services.

Geared bike: Hoi An cycling

General Cycling Tips

The roads in Vietnam can be more than a little bit crazy. Thankfully, Hoi An is relatively small, and the traffic is much more manageable than in the big cities. However, there are still some things you need to know to keep yourself safe when you’re cycling on the road.

Vehicles in Vietnam drive on the right side of the road. This is particularly important to remember when crossing roads because you might be looking for traffic in the wrong direction. Take care when crossing intersections, especially four-way intersections. Many locals on motorbikes will come around corners on the wrong side of the road. If you have a bell on your bike, then ring it as you approach the intersection to let others know that you are coming through.

Best tips about safety

We strongly discourage cycling in Hoi An at night as some motorcyclists do not use their headlights and can be very difficult to see. Many traffic lights are also turned off after 10 pm at night adding to the risk. If you are cycling at night, then wear reflective clothing and try to have a front and a backlight on your bike.

When you’re out and about and you need to leave your bike somewhere that you can’t see it, use a bike lock to make sure that it doesn’t disappear. At night, bring the bike inside the fenced area of your hostel or hotel and lock it.

Rice paddies: Hoi An cycling

During the day in Hoi An, the sun is fierce. Even cycling at a leisurely pace can quickly tire you out and leave you sweating buckets. Light clothing and a sunhat is a good idea. Wear sunscreen when you’re cycling, and make sure you have plenty of water with you. A big bottle of water is enough for most of the shorter, half-day rides, but for anything longer, two is a good idea.

Hidden Hint: In hot weather, if you stop and get off your bike for any decent period of time, then do yourself a favour and park in the shade if you can—or cover your seat. You’ll thank us later when you return to your bike and the seat doesn’t feel like the surface of the sun!

Start Your Day With a Bike Ride

While the sun might be shining when you start cycling, the weather in Hoi An and Vietnam, in general, can change very quickly. Take a small backpack with your water and a raincoat or poncho when you’re cycling into the countryside in Hoi An.

While many locals and tourists in Hoi An don’t wear helmets when cycling, it can’t hurt to have a bit of extra head protection. You might be very grateful for it if you take a tumble. Ask for a helmet when you hire the bike. If you get a flat tire while cycling in Hoi An, then pull up to any of the myriad of places offering bike hire; and if they can’t help you, then they will know someone close by who can.

If you are a bit further out, then don’t worry. Make your way to the nearest village and ask one of the locals for help. Again, if they can’t help you, they will know who can. Fixing a puncture shouldn’t cost more than 80,000 VND (4 USD). But it would be a bit more if the tube needs replacing.

Parked bikes: Hoi An cycling

Where To Cycle

There are many different places to cycle in Hoi An, both in and out of town. If you want a relaxing morning or afternoon ride interspersed with great food and shopping, then look no further than Hoi An’s Old Town. The Old Town is small enough to walk from one end to the other in 20 minutes, but a bike is a great way to get around and gives you more freedom to backtrack or get sidetracked.

The Old Town is closed to motorbikes from 3 pm onward, but it starts to get very busy and weaving through hordes of people can be a little stressful. We recommend cycling in the morning before the crowds have arrived and the heat of the day has set in.

Explore the historical sites scattered around the streets ( tickets available at all the entrances to the area), do some shopping, then sample some delicious Vietnamese food at one of the many restaurants before heading back to your accommodation to escape the afternoon heat.

While the Old Town is a wonderful place, it is most definitely set up for tourists. If you want to experience the traditional Vietnamese way of life, then you will only need to cycle a short distance into the countryside. There are many guided tours and a couple of self-guided tours that highlight the best of the Hoi An countryside.

Some of the best places to visit in Hoi An are Cam Kim Island, Tra Que Vegetable Village and the surrounding rice fields, and the beautiful beaches. We cover the self-guided cycling routes below, but for guided tours, check out our article here .

Cyclist in Hoi An: Hoi An cycling

Self-Guided Hoi An Cycling Tour

Don’t feel like joining a tour group or want to do some exploring of your own? Then try this self-guided cycling route through the rice fields of Hoi An. We think this route takes in the best of what the countryside has to offer, but there is nothing to stop you going off-route and exploring.

The best sights and experiences are often found down obscure side streets and alleyways. The best time to go cycling is in the early morning or late afternoon. This means that you escape the worst heat of the day. We recommend going in the late afternoon. This is when all the locals are out socializing and the sunset over the rice paddies is beautiful.

One Hour Self-Guided Cycle Route – The Blue Route

Starting only five to 10 minutes out of town, this ride is the perfect way to escape into the countryside. There are plenty of photo opportunities, such as a huge banyan tree, rice fields, traditional boats, and river views.

It is a very easy ride that can be done on a standard bike and is suitable for kids. The route is very easy to follow beginning at Ly Thai To Street, through the rice paddies. It then goes in to Cam Ha Village before looping back around and coming out on Hai Ba Trung, one of the main roads. From there, you can follow the road left for another five minutes to get to An Bang beach. Relax on a lounger, or you can continue right and follow the road for 20 minutes all the way back into Hoi An.

Our direction

We start the loop from Ly Thai To Street at the point marked ‘Short Loop Start’ on the map above. The location can also be found on this map pin .  Once off the main road, you’re cycling straight into the open expanse of rice paddies. The large open area gives great views of the locals at work and the motorbikes and bicycles crisscrossing the fields. It is a strange contrast between the distinctly rural countryside and the back of Hoi An’s buildings.

You will circle to the right of the small group of buildings before taking a right-hand turn. Then take the third left hand rice field turning.

The busy Hai Ba Trung Road, marked on the map as “point 1,” runs right through the middle of the rice fields, so you will need to cross it. Take care as it can be very busy and motorists don’t slow down for much. We advise stepping off the bike and pushing across this road.

Group of cyclists: Hoi An cycling

Some extra tips

After cycling through the remaining rice fields it’s into the small village of Cam Ha. If you’re passing through in the afternoon, there will often be lots of children around with neighbours outside playing cards. Keep an eye out for the Van Duc family temple on the left with its imposing front gate.

If you are friendly and respectful, then they might even let you have a look around. The cycling route goes right past the Jeep Club Café,  a great place to stop and have a cold drink while escaping the heat of the sun. This is also where the route takes a hard right turn off the larger road.

Hidden Hint: Start this tour at about 3:30 pm so that you pass by the river when the sun is setting. This means that you will avoid the day’s heat and get some stunning views and photo opportunities.

The large ponds that you pass are shrimp farms. A small bridge over the river brings you to the village on the other side where you turn right.  You are now cycling with the village on your left and the river on your right. Depending on the time of day, there might be fishermen out setting or emptying nets. There are usually plenty of traditional boats on the water, big and small.

Once you pass the  Sessions Under the Bridge bar and restaurant, you have reached the end of the marked trail. At the main road, Hai Ba Trung Street, you can turn left and head to the beach which is only another five minutes away, or you can turn right and cycle back into Hoi An’s Old Town.

Evening light reflection: Hoi An cycling

Advanced Ride – The Yellow Route

Expect this ride to take three to four hours—it’s mostly flat.

This cycling tour takes you a bit further afield from Hoi An, where you will get some stunning views from the top of Cua Dai bridge.  Then you head into local villages and farmland where cows and water buffalo roam the fields. Keep an eye out for the many family temples that you will pass once you have crossed the river. They are easily identified by their ornate gates and the statues on their roofs.

Our official opinion for you

We recommend cycling in Hoi An in the late afternoon (starting at about two or three o’clock).  This is when you will be able to see local life at its most active. There are a few schools that you cycle past, often children will be singing and dancing at the end of the school day.

The Vietnamese are very social once they have finished work.  Men can often be seen sitting around playing cards or, strangely enough, listening to very loud techno music. Expect all the children to wave hello to you, some might even try to and run alongside.

The advanced self-guided cycling tour is significantly longer than the easy ride but is still mostly flat. The hardest part is slogging up the giant Cua Dai Bridge. The cycling route heads east from Hoi An’s Old Town, alongside the river, before crossing over the Cua Dai Bridge. Then it heads west, back along the other side of the river, across a couple of bridges, and onto Cam Kim Island. From there, it’s not far to cycle back to An Hoi Island and then to central Hoi An.

Follow the route on our map above or navigate between bridges on Google Maps Cau Cua Dai – Cau Truong Giang – Cau Duy Thanh – Cau Thu Bon – Cau Cam Kim – and then wherever in town you are staying or would like to go. NOTE: The Cau Thu Bon  bridge is currently under construction but the nearby  Cầu Duy Phước bridge will lead you along the same route. Looking for more adventure? There is a temporary wooden bridge nearby which will leave you feeling like Indiana Jones.

Rural Hoi An: Hoi An cycling

Hidden’s Thoughts:

Cycling is undoubtedly one of the best ways to get around Hoi An. It simply can’t be beaten for convenience and is great for those on a budget. It’s environmentally friendly too, easy to manoeuvre and there’s no engine noise. The cycling experience in Hoi An, at times, is blissfully peaceful.

There are so many varied options for self-guided cycling tours, and literally, there is something for everyone. Take a bike mounted shopping spree around Hoi An’s Old Town. See how creative you can be at strategically balancing your shopping bags! O r, it could be a self-guided cycling tour through the picturesque countryside of Hoi An, watching families of water buffalo, local farmers, and ducks go about their day. The flat terrain and closeness of the countryside make it so easy to go on your own cycling adventure in Hoi An. So grab a bike and get peddling!

Thank you so much for this post! We ended up doing both loops last week, and it was definitely a highlight of our SE Asia holiday. Could not recommend this enough, and this post and map made it so simple to get out and explore this beautiful area.

Thank you for your sensational and very thorough instructions and directions. We just completed the blue ride today and it was very easy to navigate thanks to your tips and suggestions. Fantastic stuff.

Thank you so much for that article! We did the advanced tour and it was the best day we had in Hoi An! We took some detours when we saw the rice fields and it was amazing, we we’re alone in the rice field roads. Thank you ??

Thank you so much for these cycle routes. Gave us a beautiful views of Hoi an rural life. Routes are not on main roads but on small tracks without any traffic. Perfect.

Where can you download the cycle routes please I’m here in Zest Villas and planning to do some cycling around Hoi An on Sunday preferably quiet back street roads thanks looking forward to gearing from someone!

Hi Debi, If you go to this link you can view the routes in google maps outside of this article. https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=10bj0B-HjF74I-KQ7AnB5tBbCjhu3cUm8&usp=sharing

There is a print option, however i’m not sure it is possible to download.

I can’t describe with words how much I enjoyed this route. A thousand thank you wouldn’t be enough!! Me and my wife had the best day out of 3 in hoi an thanks to you. We took the long run but we made a little change. Wherever the road was parallel to the riverside we tried to stay close to the river from narrow foot paths mostly. This gave us the chance to see the fishing life of Vietnamese people from much closer. Really for someone who likes adventure and love to interact with the local life this is a must. Congratulations one more time.

Greetings from Greece!

Warning: as of Dec 30, 2019 Cau Thu Bon is down forcing a detour down smaller roads and one lane bridges. This made the long journey a quite a bit more “adventurous” at rush hour.

Good to know, thank you. I assume that the bridge is finally getting its full repair. Is the detour well signposted?

Thank you for this fantastic post. The bridge is still under construction. Doesn’t look like it will be finished for a while. The detour is not signed at all but it is easy enough if you have Google on hand or a good sense of direction.

Thanks for the extra information. We have added a note and directions to the article.

Hoi An Cycling

bike, cycle hoi an, hoian vietnam 2

Hoi An Cycling is our complete travel guide about Hoian bicycle travel – Hoi An cycle tours, cycling in and around Hoi An, countryside, ride Hoian to Hue, My Son, An Bang beach, Hoi An Vietnam bike, bicycle rental, route map.

Hoi An is one of the best places for family bike tours in Vietnam. The place offers a wide selection of cycling tours including both day ride (in and around Hoian ancient town) and multi-day road cycling holidays (from Hoi An to Hue, Nha Trang).

Cycling in Hoi An Vietnam lets you experience the beautiful countryside of the Vietnam, as well as rural Hoi An village life from up close. Biking on the back roads of Hoian, through countryside lanes while greeting local farmers and school kids as you pass by, all add to an immersive experience!

About Hoi An Vietnam

Hoian is located in the central coast of Vietnam, about a half hour drive from Da Nang city, 3 hour drive from Hue city. It was an important port in 17th century and remained so for a long time. There used to be canals parallel to the streets, so merchandise could be loaded straight from the back of houses onto the boats. Hoi An’s continuance as a port lasted right up until the early years of the 20 century, when the river became silted up forcing the cargo ships to call at Da Nang instead.

In the past Hoi An town has been used by the Japanese, Portuguese, Dutch, French and the large remaining Chinese community where all sorts of products and wares were traded. Remnants of these past traders’ influences can still be seen lining the streets of Hoi An.

There are nine different types of historical sites in Hoi An Vietnam with an average age of 200 years. They include private houses, family chapels, community halls, communal houses, temples, pagodas, bridges, wells and tombs. Many of these buildings have been maintained close to their original form, allowing you imagination to recreate a prosperous trading town. The houses are small and colorful with wooden doors and two round “wooden house’s eyes” above, window shutters and ornamental furniture. A pleasant change from the iron bars and metal grates of other towns.

Hoi An old town is full of shops selling artwork, from lifelike memorial family portraits, to stylized images of Hoi An houses and streets. Next door to the art shops are places selling souvenir statues, ceramic plates, and ‘antique’ bowls. At the market place beside the Thu Bon river, you can pick up almost anything you want. Visitors are often being lured into the markets to buy silk and to have quality garments tailor made. You can have anything from dresses and trousers to shirts and hats made for a cheap price.

Another noticeable quality of Hoi An ancient quarter is its relative silence. There are few cars and people do not feel the urge to use their horns every two seconds. The streets of Hoian are filled with the hum of voices, motorbikes and the shuffling of thongs along the ground. Hoi An old town is small enough to get around on foot, and you will need a set of wheels if you are going to Cua Dai Beach, or on a day trip to the Marble Mountains or Da Nang.

A relaxing activity around sunset is to hire a boat from the waterside by the market place. For active travelers, we have some day eco tours, bike ride out of Hoian ancient town. Travel these bicycle tours you will discover the peaceful countryside villages of Hoi An.

Another popular Hoi An bicycle tour is Hoi An Countryside Sightseeing Bike Tour & Basket Boat Ride that takes you to visit Tra Que vegetable village, Cam Thanh eco village with rice paddies and some special animals on the Vietnam rice fields such as cows, storks, and water buffalos, and the water coconut forest , where you ride through the coconut palm jungle and have a chance to row basket boats with the locals.

There are also Hoi An bicycle tours that focus on exploring the town itself. Mad Monkey Hoi An Bicycle Tour takes you to experience the enchanting beauty of Hoi An whilst indulging in local food delicacies along the way. On this tour you explore the city's amazing landmarks, including a local market, a craft lantern workshop, the Rehahn Gallery and Museum, and the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge.

Cycling in Hoi An Independently

To enjoy cycling in Hoi An you actually don't need to take a bicycle tour as you can explore the town and its surroundings independently, if only it's the way of traveling you prefer. To get a better idea about such a trip, we've detailed our experience of cycling in Hoi An without a tour.

Trip Itinerary for Cycling in Hoi An

During our trip to Hoi An, we hopped on bicycles that we got from our hotel and cycled along the scenic paths to explore iconic attractions, countryside and beaches.

This is an exact itinerary of our trip cycling in Hoi An .

09:00 Hoi An Ancient Town

We started our journey to discover Hoi An by bicycle by exploring Hoi An Ancient Town . Hoi An Ancient Town offers a breathtaking mix of ornate Chinese temples, Japanese-designed bridge, wooden shop-houses, French-colonial houses, and old canals.

Our first stop was the Japanese Covered Bridge, which dates back to the 18th century. This bridge is one of the most prominent attractions in Hoi An Ancient Town. Spanning 18 meters in length, the bridge is believed to be built by the Japanese.

Japanese Covered Bridge

09:15 Hoi An Central Market

After that, we continued cycling on the riverfront towards the market. Hoi An Central Market is located on the bank of the Thu Bon River. This market is bustling with locals and tourists who come to see Vietnamese life.

Hoi An Central Market

09:45 Rice Fields

We rode through the town’s small alleys until we reached the main road that crosses scenic rice fields where you can see the daily life of locals.

Rice Fields in Hoi An

10:00 Buffalo Greeting

We were lucky to see the buffalo along the way. Some local waved us and invited to ride the buffalo. We had a chance to talk with the farmer and listen to interesting stories about farming life as well as his buffalo.

Cycling around Hoi An

10:30 An Bang Beach

We continued cycling leisurely across the bridge to An Bang Beach . Our first impression at An Bang Beach wasn't great because of the tourist scam we had to encounter with.

An Bang Beach

Watch out for bicycle parking Scam!!   Before we arrived at the beach, we were aggressively stopped and told to park bicycles by rude local people. We passed the first guy who literally jumped out on the road trying to stop us but there were loads of these people along the road and we were pretty much forced to pay 10,000 VND to park our bikes. This was a scam. Some of them might charge between 20,000-50,000 for parking. You can just ignore them. However, if you choose to park in one of these places, try to negotiate and pay 5,000 VND only. If not, you can turn right and cycle down the path which brings you to the beach bars and restaurants where you can park your bike for free.

Eventually, we reached the beach. As soon as we got to the beach we were asked to hire a sunbed for 30,000-50,000 VND. We just refused it, turned to the right and walked along the beach to reach the less crowded place where we got free sunbeds with shades just for buying a drink.

Cycling around Hoi An

An Bang Beach itself is a long golden sandy beach. The water was cool and refreshing. Even if the waves were big during our visit, it was still a decent place to relax. There are also water sports, paragliding, banana boats, jet skis available.

We’ve stayed on the beach for almost 2 hours, swimming, watching people, enjoying the sea and sun, listening to music. It was a nice and relaxing day there to get away from the city for a while.

12:35 Chuc Thanh Pagoda

We got back on the main road and stopped at Chuc Thanh Pagoda along the way. Chuc Thanh Pagoda was founded by Monk Minh Hai of Chine in 1454, making it the oldest Buddhist pagoda in Hoi An. Chuc Thanh Pagoda is a really nice and peaceful place with no tourists at all.

Cycling around Hoi An

12:55 Lunch at Local Restaurant

We stopped at the local restaurant called Cafe 43 . This place looks simple but is well rated online . The food was good with huge portions and reasonable pricing.

Hoi An food

Numerous dishes of Hoi An cuisine can be found here. If you are not sure what’s worth trying, check: Hoi An Food .

13:40 Assembly Hall of Fujian Chinese

Fujian Assembly Hall is home of Jinshang Golden Mountain temple, which is dedicated to Thien Hau, the goddess of the sea and caretaker of sailors. For visiting this place, you need to get Hoi An Ancient Town entrance ticket which permits visiting 6 different historic landmarks in Hoi An and traditional entertainment (folk dancing, singing, games).

Assembly Hall of Fujian Chinese

14:00 Hoi An Café

We ended our trip at the café in Hoi An . There are many little coffee shops offering tasty coffee and other drinks in the town so we ended up at a quiet place with great atmosphere for relaxing.

Hoi An Café

Where to Rent Bicycle in Hoi An

Many hotels and guest houses, restaurants, cafes in the old town offer bike rental services by hour or by day. Some of them even offer complimentary bicycle use for guests.

There are also many bike rental shops around Hoi An. Prices are normally very reasonable and can be as low as 20,000-30,000 VND per day.

Best Time to Start Cycling in Hoi An

Cycling in Hoi An  is a pretty good experience for most of visitors, especially for those who are particularly interested in the peaceful, fresh and quiet ancient town. To fully enjoy all the beauty of Hoi An, you should start your day as early as possible. At this time, the weather is pleasant and not too hot and there are not too many tourists walking around. Don't forget to put sunscreen, bring a hat and light jacket to avoid a late afternoon sun if you're late.

Hoi An Old Town is closed off to all motorized traffic (including motorbikes) on most days, between 8:30 and 11:00 and then again from 15:00 to 21:30, so streets can be comfortably navigated by cyclists and pedestrians.

For visiting Hoi An Ancient Town attractions , you should get Hoi An Ancient Town ticket that covers 5 monuments and 21 sightseeing places in the ancient town.

Another popular beach in Hoi An that can also be visited by bicycle is  Cua Dai Beach , which is about 3 km from An Bang Bach.

Get access to the amazing Hoi An Impression Theme Park and Hoi An Memories Show with this Hoi An Memories Show Discounted Ticket and be stunned by Vietnam's largest art show, where 500 performers take over the outdoor stage in their traditional ao dai costumes and modern staging techniques. Travel back as you explore the traditional themed village that represents the port town's 400-year history. Learn and understand the deep spiritual connection of Vietnamese people when you visit the pagodas, temples, and shrines inside the Spirituality Section of the park.

Cycling Tour & Riding a Basket Boat in Hoi An, Vietnam

The Vietnamese love their two-wheelers, be it the ones with engines or the pedal-powered ones.

There are literally millions of bicycles on the roads of Vietnam, and this can be both a good thing and a bad thing. The good thing is that Vietnamese drivers are used to having bikes around them on the road, therefore are generally more considerate towards cyclists. The bad thing is, for people who are not used to riding bicycles on busy roads, it can be nerve-wracking.

If you’re one of those people, yet would still like to experience the country on two wheels, I recommend taking a tour. You will be spoiled for choice. Every hotel/hostel is littered with brochures advertising cycling tours, from short excursions to multi-day cross-country expeditions. Most are combined with other activities, such as visits to farms or boat rides.

When I was in Hoi An, I chose Heaven & Earth Traditional Countryside Bike Tour because:

  • They were the only one that offered an afternoon tour to the countryside. I am so not a morning person.
  • The price was the most suitable for my budget.
  • It included the basket boat experience

Table of Contents

Heaven & Earth Bike Tours

Heaven & Earth Tours was founded by Pascal (a French expat) and his Vietnamese wife, Thu. It was born out of a simple idea: to offer a variety of bike tours to hidden places in and around Hoi An, away from the well-trodden paths.

Ranging from 9 km – 50 km, the bike tours take you to the countryside areas in Hoi An where the inhabitants are often poor and tourism is pretty much non-existent.

By organizing these tours, Heaven & Earth has been able to develop activities, partnerships, and provide regular income to the families in need. Since their first year of operation in 2010, the company has donated more than USD15,000 to the people who live in the areas where the tours take place.

How to Book a Cycling Tour

You can make a booking by contacting them directly:

Address:  61, Ngo Quyen St., Hoi An, Vietnam (Opening Hours: 8 a.m. – 9:30 p.m.)

Tel:  +84 (0)235 3 864 362 /  Mobile:  +84 (0)126 8 422 260

Or you can get your hotel receptionist to make the booking for you. There are also other companies you could try. Check out this one on Get Your Guide:

What to Expect on a Cycling Tour in Hoi An

Riding in the rice fields in Hoi An, Vietnam | Ummi Goes Where?

Difficulty Level

This tour is easy, and even suitable for families with kids. You will cycle on small, mostly flat paths with very few cars. The only time I had to get off and push my bike was on an old wooden bridge that took us across a river. Some of the other participants continued cycling on it, but I simply didn’t trust my skill on the rickety structure.

9 km (5.5 miles). To those of you who are not used to cycling, this might sound like a lot, but you won’t actually feel it, as you will be making several stops along the way.

USD 19 for adults / USD 15 for children (6 – 12 years old). Children below 6 years old can join for free as passengers. The price does not include drinks or insurance.

Things to Bring

  • Sunscreen lotion
  • Cash for food/drinks/souvenirs
  • Windbreaker for the months of November – January

The tour begins at 1.00 pm at their office, close to the river. There, you will sign an indemnity form, get your helmet, and listen to a quick briefing. If there are many of you, you’ll be divided into groups.

From the office, you will walk a short distance to the river, where a ferry will be waiting. The ferry will take you on an hour-long ride on the Thu Bon river to arrive at Duy Vinh island .

You will then start to cycle around the island, making a few pit stops along the way. There will be two guides in each group — one will lead the way, while the other will bring up the rear to ensure that stragglers (like me) won’t get lost.

In the course of the tour, you will learn how a traditional basket boat is made, how to weave straw sleeping mats , and how to produce rice wine from scratch (you’ll get to try some!). The rice wine factory also hosts a family of pigs.

https://ummigoeswhere.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/VID_213121020_223018_670.mp4

After that, you will go to a river where you’ll get to try your hand at rowing the round-shaped basket boat. It’s harder than you think! A normal boat has an aerodynamic shape that makes it easier to move forward or backward. But with a hemispherical boat, it’s not quite as simple.

Anyway, you don’t have to worry — a very feisty (and flirty) old lady will guide you through the process.

basket boat - Cycling tour in Hoi An Vietnam | Ummi Goes Where?

Your last stop will be a local cafe/grocery store where you will take a break while sampling some local snacks. After that, you will be taken back on a boat to the starting point. The tour ends at around 6:00 pm.

Additional Info on Hoi An Cycling Tour

  • The tour is available every day, all year round.
  • Maximum 10 pax per group (unless otherwise requested).
  • Helmets are available upon request.
  • You can choose between a city bike and a hybrid bike.
  • Children’s bicycles are available for 6 years old and older.
  • Tandem bicycles and bicycles with child carriers are available upon request.
  • The tour is also available in French (please indicate your preference when making your reservation)
  • The fee does not include insurance. Although cycling is a low-risk activity, accidents can happen anytime and to anyone. Make sure you’re insured and that your insurance covers activities like cycling. World Nomads offers one of the most comprehensive travel insurance policies out there.

Final Thoughts on Hoi An Cycling Tour

Indeed, the best way to see Vietnam is on two wheels. And this tour was the perfect introduction to that. Although I’m not that great on a bicycle, I felt very comfortable throughout the tour because there was almost no traffic at all except for the occasional motorbikes.

The side activities were great, but the highlight to me was the exquisite landscape of rice fields that we passed through. It was truly an authentic Vietnamese experience.

Thank you, Fadima! Cycling in Ho Chi Minh City would undoubtedly be a lot more challenging than in Hoi An, but if you think you can, go for it! I’d love to try it too, if there’s a reputable tour I could join.

I never thought cyling would be a good idea to explore a new place until I read your post. Glad you’ve enjoyed it sis 😃

Thank you, Lea! Cycling is a great way to explore a place. But since I’m not that confident on a bike, I prefer joining tours, then I can be sure of my safety and that I wouldn’t get lost!
