Rolling Stone magazine named them Band of The Year in 1992, while VH-1 named them one of the greatest Hip-hop artists of all time! The group Arrested Development have existed since the late 80s and since then Speech and co have prided themselves on offering an alternative to conventional hip hop with a very Afrocentric mentality running throughout. They have gained worldwide acclaim for their music and have fans in the genre of hip hop, alternative and world music. They often perform at huge events around the globe and attract large crowds to their upbeat and engaging performances.

With a number of bandleaders and musicians onstage, there is always something going on and something to keep your attention. Speech keeps the whole show pacy and controlled even though it does seem very natural and DIY at times. He is the conductor through the instrumental tracks including 'Revolution' and 'Mamas Always on Stage'. The Grammy award winning outfit have always offered an alternative to conventional hip hop yet when you hear a whole crowd singing along to 'People Everyday' it would seem they are now a universal flavour.

Arrested Development is real hip hop. They run counter to the norm of what you get with most hip hop groups with a ton of positive energy and, get this, they're great musicians.

The rhythm of this group was absolutely sick, bass lines surging through and the drummer was clean and filthy at the same time. The vocalists are really tight and good dancers and there's just so much musicality in the performance.

The shows are super fun and will leave you feeling great and energised. Love the positive vibes that come through their music and their lyrics. You should check Arrested Development out for SURE if you're into talented musicians playing REAL funk, hip hop, reggae, R&B, whatever you might call what they do.

The vocalist will rap at times and other tunes are straight emotional R&B or gospel. Some of what they play is just straight funk. I have a feeling they just play whatever seems right at the time, they've been around forever and probably have a huge set list they can pull from.

They can really bring the groove when they want to and always end up with a clean mix. Definitely one of the most memorable funk or hip hop groups I've ever seen and they have something for everyone. Their vocals and their energy will make a positive impression on you for sure :)

The Roots have announced a new run of tour dates dubbed the “Hip-Hop Is the Love of My Life Tour,” which will see the band head to cities across America with support from Arrested Development and Digable Planets .

The tour will follow the 2024 iteration of The Roots’ Picnic in Philadelphia this June, which will feature a lineup including Lil Wayne, Jill Scott, André 3000, and more. At the end of June, The Roots will double down with the Roots Picnic: Hip-Hop Is The Love of My Life festival in Los Angeles, where Arrested Development and Digable Planets will perform as well.

After the LA festival, The Roots will play a few more dates (including three in Europe), and then reunite with Arrested Development and Digable Planets for the “Hip-Hop Is the Love of My Life” dates, beginning with a performance in Houston. From there, they’ll head through the South, Midwest, and East Coast, concluding with a gig in Boston on September 1st. Check out the full list of dates below, and grab tickets here .

Other than touring, The Roots have kept themselves busy with their duties as house band for The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. In February, they backed Sophie Ellis-Bextor for a performance of “Murder on the Dancefloor,” and last month, they teamed up with Ray Parker Jr., Bill Murray, and Ernie Hudson to sing the Ghostbusters theme song .

The Roots Are Bringing Arrested Development And Digable Planets On The Road For A Tour This Summer

The Roots announced a new summer Hip-Hop Is The Love Of My Life Tour across North America and Europe, where they’ll be joined by Arrested Development and Digable Planets as support on select dates.

Shortly after hosting Philly’s Roots Picnic in June, the three groups will reunite in Los Angeles for a show at the Hollywood Bowl .

The Roots will set out on a cross-country tour this August with fellow alternative hip-hop legends Arrested Development and Digable Planets as special guests. The first time this trio have shared the same bill, the Hip Hop Is The Love Of My Life Tour will take the groups through the East Coast and Midwest over the course of eight dates this summer. The collaboration between the three acts, all founded between 1987 and 1988, will be a historic moment, celebrating decades of innovation in the jazz-rap and progressive hip-hop genres. 

A month after meeting up at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl for June 29’s Roots Picnic along with Queen Latifah, Common, the Pharcyde and Jungle Brothers, Arrested Development and Digable Planets will join the Roots on Aug. 16 at 713 Music Hall in Houston for the first show of the tour. The following night, the trio will take The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory in Irving, Texas. On Aug. 23, the tour will run through a yet unannounced venue en route to an Aug. 24 performance at Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Ill. Next, the ensemble will trek east to Sterling Heights, Mich. where they will play Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre at Freedom Hill on Aug. 25. 

The last three dates will bring the groups to Arrested Development’s hometown of Atlanta for a show on Aug. 29 at the Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park. Next up will be an appearance at Vienna, Va.’s Filene Center at Wolf Trap on Aug. 31, followed by a closing evening on Sept. 1 at Boston’s MGM Music Hall at Fenway. 

The mini tour comes in the midst of a busy summer schedule for the Roots, including their three Roots Picnic events, solo tour dates and a packed festival calendar including co-headlining performances in the U.K. with De La Soul. Coming up, the Roots will take the stage in The Mountain Winery Concert Series in Saratoga, Calif. on May 11.

Tampa’s Riverfest returns for 2024: Here’s a guide to the big event

This weekend brings the annual Riverfest to Tampa’s iconic Riverwalk. And what might be most remarkable is that this is only the eighth year for this celebration.

In the span of just a decade, the makeup and vibe of downtown Tampa have been transformed by a linear park that invites people to stroll, bike, skate and linger on 2.6 miles of pathway along the Hillsborough River.

Riverfest runs Friday and Saturday, May 3-4, and this will be the first time the event has a headliner in Grammy-winning hip-hop group Arrested Development. It will also have a market of local vendors and artists, a hot air balloon glow, a Wiener Dog Derby, paddleboard races, a water ski show, yoga on the lawn, a parade of lighted lanterns, a Friday night Taste of the Riverwalk and Saturday’s Taco Fest .

The transformative Riverwalk was first envisioned in 1975. It started as a small waterfront walkway that opened in 1987, but it took six mayors and 40 years before the biggest section connecting MacDill Park under the Kennedy Boulevard bridge to Curtis Hixon Park opened in 2014.

Harbour Island resident John Fitzgibbons, a Tampa attorney, jogs along the Riverwalk trail three or four times a week. Having lived here since 1991, he was eager for the Riverwalk to be completed.

The change in the community mindset is astounding, he said.

“Tampa didn’t know it had a waterfront,” Fitzgibbons said. “Getting the Riverwalk has just been transformational. A decade ago it was a different town.”

The biggest change, he said, is the sense of community.

“It’s a real mix of people. You hear a lot of different languages and you see families with their kids and then an exercise class in the park. Then the river brings you all these boat parades and concerts on the lawn in front of Armature Works and boat shows. It’s our living room now,” Fitzgibbons said.

Former Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn was at the helm when decades of Riverwalk plans from his predecessors were finally completed. He said it was like a light switch was turned on.

“Tampa had been a working waterfront town for generations. We turned our back on the river, literally,” Buckhorn said. “We were slow learners.”

“Now I’m looking forward to when it gets expanded to the west side of the river,” Buckhorn said, “because it will transform the west side.”

One of the Riverwalk’s most popular events by far is Riverfest, which is expected to attract more than 20,000 people.

Most of the festivities this weekend are free, though some, such as the paddleboard races, require $50 registration at thetampariverwalk.com. Parking is available at multiple garages and lots within a few blocks of the event, and the TECO Streetcar has a free shuttle every 15 minutes from Ybor City. 8 Projects that Exemplify Moscow's Urban Movement

When it comes to urbanism these days, people’s attention is increasingly turning to Moscow . The city clearly intends to become one of the world’s leading megacities in the near future and is employing all necessary means to achieve its goal, with the city government showing itself to be very willing to invest in important urban developments (though not without some criticism ).

A key player in this plan has been the Moscow Urban Forum . Although the forum’s stated goal is to find adequate designs for future megacities, a major positive side-effect is that it enables the city to organize the best competitions, select the best designers, and build the best urban spaces to promote the city of Moscow. The Forum also publishes research and academic documents to inform Moscow’s future endeavors; for example, Archaeology of the Periphery , a publication inspired by the 2013 forum and released in 2014, notably influenced the urban development on the outskirts of Moscow, but also highlighted the importance of combining urban development with the existing landscape.

Concluding earlier this month, the 2016 edition of the Moscow Urban Forum focused on smart cities and the impact of technology on the ways we interact with people and use public infrastructure and civic spaces. The 2016 Forum invited city officials, urbanists, and architectural practitioners – including Yuri Grigoryan from Project MEGANOM ; Pei Zhu from Studio Pei Zhu ; Hani Rashid from Asymptote ; Reinier de Graaf from OMA ; Yosuke Hayano from MAD Architects ; and Kengo Kuma from Kengo Kuma Architects – to share about their knowledge and experiences in urban design. With the city looking forward to the built results of the latest Forum, we take a look back at some of the major developments in Moscow that have emerged in the past five years.

1) Gorky Park and Garage Museum

In 2010 the city government decided to improve Muscovites’ urban environment and create public spaces, and Gorky Park was the first project of note. The Russian equivalent of Central Park, it used to attract masses of tourists to its amusement park, but no residents would spend time there. Its reconstruction began in 2011 and featured infrastructure for strolling, sport, work, culture and leisure.

Inside the park lies the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art , a landmark building from the Brezhnev communist era which was renovated and transformed by OMA in 2015. The Dutch firm kept the original structure “as found,” only repairing elements from its prefabricated concrete walls – often clad with brick and decorative green tiles. Instead, the redesign focused on a double-skin facade of polycarbonate plastic that enclosed the original structure and preserved it from decay.

2) Zaryadye Park, Diller Scofidio + Renfro

Due to open in 2018, Zaryadye Park designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro is probably one of Moscow ’s most cutting-edge projects. Located next to the Kremlin, the Red Square, and St Basil’s Cathedral, the project embodies what the architects calls “Wild Urbanism.” The project notably includes four artificial microclimates that mimic Russian landscape typologies: the steppe, the forest, the wetland and tundra. “It is a park for Russia made from Russia,” as Charles Renfro explains , in that “it samples the natures of Russia and merges them with the city, to become a design that could only happen here. It embodies a wild urbanism, a place where architecture and landscape are one.”

3) Moscow Riverfront, Project Meganom

Russian firm Project Meganom has also designed an ambitious project for Moscow ’s riverfront. Their masterplan also aims for a dialogue between the built and natural environment. A series of linear green spaces follow the river, and lines for pedestrians, cyclists, cars, and public transport are clearly delineated, improving the use of the public squares. River embankments are also transformed to function as areas for activities, communication, education and creativity nodes for public gathering.

4) Krymskaya Embankment, Wowhaus Architecture Bureau

Wowhaus Architecture Bureau recently transformed the 4-lane road at Krymskaya Embankment into a landscape park that connects Gorky Park with Krymsky bridge. The area used to be deserted, but is now reactivated with distinct transit and sport zones, as well as pavilions for artists’ exhibitions. Wave-shaped bicycle ramps, paths, and benches feature on the artificial landscape, which is also used for sledding, skiing, and skating in the winter.

5) Hermitage Museum and ZiL Tower in Moscow, Asymptote Architecture

New York architectural firm Asymptote Architecture are currently building two projects, a 150-meter residential tower and a satellite facility for St Petersburg’s well-known Hermitage Museum , where modern and contemporary art collections will be displayed. Situated in one of Moscow ’s oldest industrial areas, Asymptote’s buildings will lie in place of a Constructivist factory – which explains why the museum was reportedly inspired by El Lissitzky's "Proun" painting, as the terrace interior clearly shows.

6) “My Street”

“My Street” is the largest-scale program led by Moscow ’s government. The project aims to create about 50 kilometers of new pedestrian zones within the city center and periphery. The extensive program aims to solve parking issues, renovate street facades, and repair sidewalks and walkways with delimited areas for public transports, cars, cyclists, and pedestrians. “My Street” also requires a strong governance strategy and coordination; led by the Strelka Institute’s consultation arm KB Strelka , the project also involves 17 Russian and foreign architecture practices that were all individually in charge of one street, square or group of streets. Notable architects include the German firm Topotek 1 , the Dutch group West 8 , and the Russian firm Tsimailo , Lyashenko and Partners.

7) Moscow Metro

Moscow Metro is an architectural masterpiece that has been elaborated on since the 1920s. Its stations from the Stalin era are known for their unique designs with high ceilings, elaborate chandeliers and fine granite and marble cladding. To ensure that Moscow Metro remains an emblem of the city’s urban culture and powerful transportation system, the city’s government organized various competitions for the renovation of some Metro stations. Russian-based practice Nefa Architects was chosen to redesign Moscow’s Solntsevo Metro Station, while Latvian firm U-R-A will transform Novoperedelkino Subway Station . New stations are also being built, including two stations by Russian firms Timur Bashkayev Architectural Bureau and Buromoscow which should be completed by the end of 2018.

8) Luzhniki Stadium

Luzhniki Stadium is Moscow ’s main venue for sporting and cultural events. With Russia hosting the 2018 FIFA World Cup , the stadium should reflect Moscow’s intent to become a leading megacity, which is why $540 million has been spent on construction works. Its renovation mainly focuses on the roof and seating areas, and the capacity is planned to increase up to 81,000 seats. Works will be completed by 2017.

Macy’s store at Rivergate Mall could be demolished, replaced with new multi-use development, docs say

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Planning documents show the vacant Macy’s store at Rivergate Mall could be demolished and replaced by a mixed-use development if a developer’s plan is approved by the Goodlettsville Planning Commission.

The proposed development from commercial real estate developer Al. Neyer calls for the existing vacant three-story Macy’s store to be torn down and the area to be redeveloped into a “vibrant, mixed-use community.”

The development’s plans include multiple uses, including a 17,000-square-foot single-use retailer, restaurants, a 120-key hotel and 340 multi-family apartments with interior and exterior residential amenities, including a pool and central gathering place.

“The proposed buildings are oriented to front Rivergate Parkway and organized around a new private drive that serves as an outdoor amenity for both visitors and residents,” planning documents say.

If approved, the project is expected to break ground in 2025 and be completed in 2026/2027.

The Goodlettsville Planning Commission will discuss the development at its Planning and Zoning Commission Meeting on May 6.
