Jun. 7—A pair of popular tours exploring artisan cafes and murals throughout Laredo is entering the digital age as the Laredo Convention and Visitors Bureau implemented the guided experiences into its Visit Laredo mobile app.

“We’re really excited. We invite everybody to become a tourist in your own community, to find all those jewels, those wonderful places we have in our community that make us a unique destination,” LCVB Director Aileen Ramos said. “We all carry our phones every day, so now we’re taking it to the next level and combining the Visit Laredo app with the mural map and the coffee shop map. I think it’s an amazing idea.”

The Laredo Coffee Tour first launched in January with a map distributed throughout town highlighting 12 locations. In the months since, it has grown to feature 16 establishments. The City Murals Guide was made available shortly after and features 42 works of art throughout the city.

“We want our community to be our own tourists. You should be exploring your own community and what it has to offer,” City of Laredo Communications Administrator Noraida Negron said. “That is why they came up with this amazing idea of the mural and coffee tours. There was a map, and now we’re going to be doing it digitally so that it is easier and user-friendly for everyone in our community.”

The Visit Laredo mobile app is available through both Apple and Android devices. It features interactive maps and directions and the ability to track where you have visited. The coffee shops have a code guests can request to scan to confirm their visit, and anyone completing the tour can visit the LCVB office at 101 Salinas Ave. to receive a souvenir.

“This makes it easier for tourists visiting our great city. These are great ideas and we should continue to promote them,” Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino said. “Tourism is very important for the City of Laredo. It is an economic driver. We have to look at this as something important for us. It is a priority for the City of Laredo. This is especially true as we expect more economic growth in Laredo.”

As the addition of the two tours to the app was announced, Trevino was already looking ahead to additional opportunities.

“Hopefully this trend can continue and can be adapted to some of our great historical sites,” he said. “Laredo is home to one of the oldest crossing points and historical areas along the U.S. and Mexico border, and it is the first city to be chartered in the state of Texas.”

The announcement was held Tuesday, June 6 at Golondrina Food Park in front of Gloria’s Coffee Bar, one of the 16 stops on the coffee tour. Gloria’s Coffee Bar owner Jennifer Cantu spoke about how she started it due to a lack of unique local options, and she is thrilled to see so many locations now spread throughout the city and highlighted by the tour.

“One of my first goals in creating Gloria’s was to create something people want to come and see here, people from San Antonio, Austin and Houston, the big cities that we know from Texas, that they would see something online and want to visit there,” Cantu said. “Now that we have something digital where anybody can attain this information, they can see Laredo is growing in ways that we never expected.

“I am pretty proud that the city gives us that spotlight knowing very well that there are so many creatives here in town and there are so many coffee shops now. That makes me very happy because we are all growing as a community.”

Representatives from several other stops along the tour were also in attendance including Dominic Rodriguez from Casa Blanca Specialty Coffee. He agreed with what Cantu said and spoke about the boost the tour has provided to business.

“We have seen a lot of new faces walk into the shop and say, ‘We didn’t know this was here. We had no idea a good coffee shop was so close to us right around the corner from where we live,'” Rodriguez said. “I think it will be even better now with the mobile app aspect of it. We are excited to keep serving the community of Laredo the best coffee we can. We are also excited to keep seeing the coffee community and the small business community keep growing.”

Along with hearing from representatives of the cafes, the event also featured testimony from someone who completed the entire tour. KGNS anchor Mindy Casso said she started the tour a few months ago because of being frustrated with herself when she realized she had fallen into the habit of always getting coffee from national chains. She completed the tour Monday.

“I was very frustrated with myself because I saw small businesses closing down. I saw one particular coffee shop close down right after COVID, and I just thought, ‘What am I doing here?'” she said. “Every single day I have an opportunity to help my fellow Laredoans. Instead of paying $6 for a coffee at a national franchise that is never going to go broke, never going to go under, why can’t I spend that money with my fellow entrepreneurs that have most probably dedicated their entire life savings and poured everything into a dream of being able to offer specialty coffees.”

Waking up at 2 a.m. to get ready to show up at 4 a.m. for the morning show, coffee is a typical go-to for Casso and many others involved in the production. She began taking the tour with her producer during their break from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., and she documented the tour on her social media to encourage others to do the same.

“We find ourselves saying ‘where should we get coffee this morning?’ and we go straight to the map,” she said. “We’re like, ‘This one has great matcha, this one has great cinnamon, this one has great mocha.’ We don’t go to those franchises anymore. We are hitting up our local coffee shops. That is the message I want to give everybody. Do your best to break the habit, shop local and support our local entrepreneurs. They have dreams to provide exquisite services for Laredo, and we need to support them.”

Casso surprised the LCVB with the announcement that KGNS will be producing segments on the morning show documenting each stop of the tour.

Along with boosting awareness for the local coffee shops, Ramos said she is excited for the extra attention the art of Laredoans will receive from the mural tour.

“We have 42 murals in the application and the map, and we don’t realize that they are all over the community,” she said. “It doesn’t matter where you are, what part of the city you are in, there is always public art around. We are really excited about sharing this with everybody.”

Things to do in Laredo, Texas

March 8, 2023       Leave a Comment

SALUDOS FROM LAREDO, TEXAS

Saludos Brewing Laredo Texas Mural

Laredo is located in the south of Texas, right at the Mexican border. It is about 5 hours from Houston, and 2.5 hours from San Antonio and Corpus Christi.

I remember visiting every year when my family and I would visit Mexico. Overall, Laredo has grown so much from what I remember and I was so excited to explore some of the best things to do in Laredo Texas.

Thank you for having me  Visit Laredo ! All opinions shared are my own.

THINGS TO DO IN LAREDO

Plaza Theatre Downtown Laredo Texas

VISIT THE HISTORIC DOWNTOWN – One of my favorite things to do in Laredo was to step back in time and walk around the San Agustin Historic District, the oldest section of Laredo. First, stop by the San Agustin Church, a Gothic structure with a five-story- 141ft bell/clock tower. Then head to the Plaza Theatre building, the only remaining example of the Art Modern style in Laredo.

GO ON A COFFEE TOUR – Support over 12 local coffee shops and participate in The Laredo Coffee Tour. At each stop, get a stamp, and after two stamps, stop by the Visit Laredo office for a free souvenir. Pick up a map at any of the coffee shops on the list, or at the Visit Laredo office. For instance, I had a chance to try  Cafe Radical  which has the cutest coffee shop, and  Gloria’s Coffee  which had an amazing cajeta latte.

VISIT LAKE CASA BLANCA INTERNATIONAL STATE PARK  – Fish, swim, kayak, water ski, or boat on Lake Casa Blanca. Or grab your hiking shoes or bike and go for a hike, a walk, or a bike ride on the trails. Lastly, make sure you stop at the old museum to see the ruins of Casa Blanca, the original Texas White House.

CROSS THE BORDER INTO MEXICO – Walk or drive across the border and spend a day in Nuevo Laredo. Fun fact: Laredo is home to one of the oldest crossing borders along the Mexico-US border.

WHERE TO EAT

taquitos ravi al pastor tacos laredo texas

In addition to the items above, eating was also one of my favorite things to do in Laredo! Being so close to the border, it’s no secret that the Mexican food is going to be good! Overall, Laredo has so many restaurants to choose from, and new cuisines continue to be added.

For instance, the restaurants below are the ones I had a chance to try, but I will also be sharing additional ones we didn’t have the opportunity to visit but were highly recommended.

LA REYNERA BAKERY & RESTAURANT  – La Reynera has been around since 1928 serving fantastic breakfast tacos, biscuits, and Mexican baked goods. Above all, I have to say these were some of the best breakfast tacos I’ve ever had, and I absolutely loved the barbacoa tacos. Lastly, I didn’t get to try the biscuits but those were also highly raved about.

TAQUITOS RAVI – I highly recommend getting the Al pastor tacos and the aguas frescas. Pick from one of the several locations around town.

VICA’S DELIGHTS BISTRO  – The perfect place for brunch! It’s super cute and retro inside, and you can pick from an American or Mexican breakfast. I highly recommend the 3 leches pancakes and the chilaquiles with mole.

KAITOD THAI  – It all started as a food truck, and now it is a beautiful Thai restaurant in downtown Laredo. Honestly, it’s one of the most beautiful restaurants I’ve ever been to. I tried some appetizers, some lemonades, and the pineapple fried rice which was off the menu, and everything was delicious! Overall, make sure to make a reservation as it gets busy!

BOLILLOS CAFE  – Choose from an American or Mexican breakfast, including, baked goods. I grabbed lunch to go and tried some of the conchas and they were pretty good! In addition, they also had a toasted concha which I’ve never tried before.

For instance, I heard great things about Las Kekas, La India for their amazing mole, and Scratch Sandwich Company for some amazing sandwiches made from scratch. Lastly, I made a stop at Golondrina Food Park for coffee but didn’t get to try any of the amazing food trucks on site.

Overall, I had such an amazing time in Laredo. I loved the blend of Mexican and American cultures, the history, and the amazing food. I can’t wait for my next visit!

How to plan the perfect long weekend in Laredo, Texas

Find the best shopping in Laredo!

When you’re planning a spring getaway with friends, the challenge is finding a destination with something for everyone — and a few surprises to keep it exciting (think: indoor archery and chef-driven food trucks). Deep in the heart of South Texas, Laredo brims with small city cool, fascinating history and delicious eats making it one of best-kept secrets of the Lone Star State.

Sitting on the banks of the Rio Grande, a few miles from the border of Mexico, Laredo truly has it all with a taste of Texas, Mexico and Mex-Tex like no other. You’ll find everything you need for a fun-filled weekend of exploring, relaxing, and reconnecting with nature. Not to mention, plenty of reasons to tack on a few extra days or stay a week.

Here are some picks for an unforgettable, three-day itinerary with your best friends.

Settle into welcoming accommodations, spanning from familiar hotel brands to one-of-a-kind properties. For a bed-and-breakfast filled with charm and quirky details, the Laredo Mansion has been transformed into four unique suites perfect for a girls’ trip. Or, check into the swanky La Posada Hotel in the heart of downtown with two pools and two onsite restaurants. The Rialto Hotel is another boutique hotel housed in a historic building for a mix of old and new.

To kick-start your adventure, choose a coffee stop from one of a dozen venues listed on the self-guided The Laredo Coffee Tour . As an added perk, you can collect stamps at each one and stop by the Visit Laredo office to snag a free souvenir once you’ve got two stamps.

Next, head to La India Packing Co. and Tasting Room Cafe for a tasty lunch in one of Laredo’s most iconic, local gems which first opened in 1924. This nearly 100-year-old shop and eatery sells a wide variety of specialty spices, herbs and seasonings like the must-buy Tejano seasoning.

Next, dive right into fascinating history. Over its 268-year existence, Laredo has lived under the flags of seven nations, including its own short-lived independent republic in 1840. For the history buffs in the group, Laredo’s several historic districts are filled with fascinating stories. The oldest among them, the San Agustin Historic District dates back to 1755 and has the Republic of the Rio Grande Museum worth a stop.

For dinner, Border Foundry serves up one of the best dining experiences in town. Paying homage to the owner’s grandfather who ran a local casting factory in the early 1900s, the menu features traditional American fare with a modern spin.

Wake up and embrace another beautiful day in Laredo with breakfast at La Finca, a casual eatery serving homey, traditional Mexican food along with treats like French toast, waffles, and even brunch burgers.

Now, you’re ready to get a taste of the city’s arty side. There are more than 40 murals dotting the streets of Laredo telling the stories of different neighborhoods and local artists. Among the wall-size artworks, you’ll find several tributes to late-great “Queen of Tejano Music” Selena Quintanilla and odes to local wildlife like the vibrant “Naturalez Viva.”

For lunch, switch gears with Kai Tod Thai Kitchen , the only Thai eatery in Laredo and a beloved spot for its eye-catching presentation and delightful flavors.

Afterwards, mosey on over to ‘IT’ street. There’s so much going on in downtown Laredo, locals simply call Iturbide Street, “IT” Street, for its lively arts and entertainment district. Sip craft beers at the Cultura Beer Garden and stay tuned for events, such as bands and a rock and roll glow bike ride (May 31). Other popular watering holes include House of Whisky and 1971 Social Bar.

For dinner, give another global selection a whirl at Tabernilla, a restaurant offering an authentic taste of Spain with tapas, entrees, desserts and house-made sangria for sharing.

Gear up for an active day at Magnolia Café & Grill , which has earned cult status for its Fruity Pebbles-covered pancakes. Once you’ve fueled up, take a golf getaway to

The Max . This spectacular, par 72 course overlooking the mighty Rio Grande. Great for all levels of player, the layout designed by Robert Trent Jones II winds through century-old mesquite trees and arroyo creeks in rugged landscape. After a relaxing day on the greens, recharge with a chef-driven meal at the Golondrina Food Park . Take your pick of several enticing food trucks and bars serving up pizza, burgers and tacos, among other tasty bites. Opened for dinner Thursday to Sunday and lunch on the weekends, this culinary hotspot has indoor and outdoor seating, including pet-friendly areas. For the newest spot to try, the Comalli Taqueria LRD debuted this February.

To keep your adrenaline going, try stress-busting indoor and outdoor sports that will make you feel like a kid at summer camp. At Laredo Axe House, throw axes with digital interactive targets or head to Arena Archery for an indoor archery range. To soak up natural splendor on the river, rent kayaks or join a four-mile guided tour on the Rio Grande with Neto’s Kayak Rentals .

Finally, unwind after a big day-out with big flavors at a classic, Texas steakhouse. Dubbed “the Best Little Steak House in South Texas,” The Tack Room at La Posada Hotel has been operating since 1982. This legendary eatery specializes in great steaks, seafood and serious margaritas. For a great end to your trip, toast to the good times in Laredo, snap a group pic and make plans for your next time around.

Historical Overview

The history of coffee in Laredo traces back to the early days of Spanish colonization in the region. As European settlers established trade routes between Mexico and the United States, coffee became a coveted commodity, prized for its stimulating effects and rich flavor. By the 19th century, coffee had firmly entrenched itself in Laredo’s cultural fabric, with coffee houses serving as popular gathering spots for intellectuals, politicians, and merchants.

Throughout the years, coffee consumption in Laredo continued to evolve, reflecting shifting tastes and cultural influences. The rise of espresso culture in the 20th century brought with it a new wave of coffee enthusiasts eager to explore different brewing methods and flavor profiles. Today, Laredo’s coffee scene is a vibrant tapestry of tradition and innovation, with a diverse array of coffee shops catering to every palate.

One of the most striking aspects of Laredo’s coffee culture is its diversity. As a city situated at the crossroads of two distinct cultural traditions—American and Mexican—Laredo’s coffee shops reflect this rich tapestry of influences, offering a melting pot of flavors and experiences.

From traditional Mexican cafes serving up steaming cups of café de olla to hipster coffee roasteries specializing in single-origin beans, Laredo’s coffee scene celebrates diversity in all its forms. Whether you prefer a classic cappuccino or a spicy Mexican mocha, you’re sure to find something to tantalize your taste buds in Laredo.

Coffee shops play a multifaceted role in the community, serving as more than just places to grab a quick caffeine fix. In Laredo, coffee shops serve as social hubs where people from all walks of life come together to connect, converse, and create memories. Whether it’s catching up with friends over a leisurely brunch or meeting with colleagues for a brainstorming session, coffee shops provide a welcoming space for social interaction and camaraderie.

Additionally, coffee shops contribute to the local economy by providing employment opportunities and supporting small-scale producers and artisans. Many of Laredo’s coffee shops prioritize sourcing locally roasted beans and homemade ingredients, fostering a sense of community and sustainability.

Furthermore, coffee shops serve as cultural ambassadors, showcasing the unique flavors and traditions of Laredo’s culinary heritage. Through their diverse menus and welcoming atmospheres, coffee shops help preserve and promote the city’s rich cultural identity, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the pleasures of a good cup of coffee in Laredo.

Coffee Shop Etiquette

While coffee shops are known for their laid-back atmosphere, it’s important to observe certain etiquette to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

Respect other patrons : Be mindful of noise levels and personal space, especially in crowded coffee shops. Avoid loud conversations or disruptive behavior that could disturb others.

Clean up after yourself : Dispose of trash properly and clean up any spills or messes. Keep the space tidy for the next person to enjoy.

Support the establishment : Show appreciation for the coffee shop staff by treating them with courtesy and respect. Remember to tip generously for good service.

Be mindful of seating : If the coffee shop is busy, try not to monopolize tables for extended periods. Share seating with others and be considerate of those looking for a place to sit.

Follow house rules : Familiarize yourself with the coffee shop’s policies regarding outside food and drink, laptop use, and Wi-Fi access. Adhere to these rules to maintain a harmonious environment for everyone.

By following these simple guidelines, you can help create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere where everyone can enjoy their coffee shop experience to the fullest.

In conclusion, coffee shops in Laredo, Texas, are more than just places to grab a cup of coffee—they’re vibrant community spaces where people come together to connect, converse, and create lasting memories. From cozy cafes serving up traditional Mexican brews to trendy roasteries specializing in artisanal blends, Laredo’s coffee scene offers something for everyone to enjoy. By embracing diversity, fostering community engagement, and observing proper etiquette, coffee shops play a vital role in preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Laredo for generations to come. So the next time you find yourself in Laredo, be sure to stop by one of its many coffee shops and experience the warmth and hospitality that make this city truly special.

"Absolutely love the service and atmosphere at 7brews! The coffee is also so delicious. Erika's service was such a great help. She suggested I try the "Brunette" iced coffee with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. It was soooo good! Thanks Erika!"

Juan Pablo Santiago

"Nice coffee spot in Laredo, it's drive thru only but the cool thing is that you can order as you while you're in the line, which makes the service pretty fast. Prices are accessible and coffee is good, plus you can ask for non dairy milk."

Born and raised in Laredo, Texas, Rochelle and I had always loved the coffee shop culture. There was a conversation that took place on a beach in Puerto Rico about how cool it would be to open a coffee shop in our hometown, which sounded insane at the time.

We knew for a fact that we shouldn’t jump into an industry we knew nothing about just for an aesthetic, so we dove into the coffee industry me as a barista by day, graphic designer by night and Rochelle handling the numbers and getting her hands on the espresso machine as much as she could.

After working at a few amazing shops during the last two years of our time in Puerto Rico, Rochelle and I finally felt that this coffee shop idea might actually be possible. With the help of some amazing friends & family, we were able to make our dream a reality with Dosis and we hope you’ll come hang with us!

Starbucks joins value meals trend with its new ‘pairings menu’

FILE - Starbucks announced its new Pairings Menu on Tuesday.

(Gray News) - Starbucks is joining the value meal trend with its new Pairings Menu.

On Tuesday, Starbucks introduced the Pairings Menu.

For $5, you can get a tall iced or hot coffee or tea with a croissant. For $6, you get the same drink option but with a breakfast sandwich instead of the croissant.

The price may change for customizations and goes up if you get the Double Smoked Bacon or Impossible breakfast sandwich.

The new value menu is the latest effort by Starbucks to turn around sales after a “disappointing” quarter.

Wendy’s, McDonald’s and other fast food chains have also rolled out new value deals to entice customers worried about soaring fast food prices.

The Pairings Menu is not available through delivery services.
