Nestled in the granite outcrops above a bend in the Nyamasanga River, Valley View Lodge affords breathtaking views over Bushman Rock Estate. The beautifully manicured gardens and rolling lawns are encircled by a bubbling seasonal stream, a network of small lakes, and the vine-covered valley. Hidden amongst tall indigenous trees, the thatched lodges offer complete privacy and take the form of double, twin or family suites, all decorated in a subtle African theme. With their private lounges and four-poster beds, the lodges provide guests with their own oasis in which to ease saddle-weary muscles. At Bushman Rock we believe that a lodge-based safari offers the chance to unpack your bags and relax travel-worn bodies. The lawns and lush gardens are perfect for the quiet contemplation of nature, reading or simply unwinding. The surrounding Msasa woodland provides cool shade from which to watch the polo ponies in training or the wild fowl at play on the river. As our name suggests, the swimming pool and surrounding decking afford stunning views of the valley and vineyards beyond. Looking out over the vineyards and Theo's Lake, guests may make out antelope or giraffe feeding in the savannah areas in the distance. If the strong African sun becomes too intense, shelter may be found in the coolness of the library or the comfort of the drawing room at the central lodge. Southern African cuisine has been influenced by the vast number of different cultures that passed through the region. The Passaportis family has been in Africa for over 150 years and the meals served at Bushman Rock will show tastes of traditional African, Cypriot, English, German and Afrikaans. The majority of food served is grown and produced on Bushman Rock Estate, and we pride ourselves on our organic vegetable garden, free-range eggs and extensive orchard. Jono Passaportis and his team try to offer as personal an experience as possible. Dining is a communal affair and meals can be served in the dining room, beside the pool or around the fire-pit, depending on the weather. Lying hidden within the picturesque Nyamasanga River Valley is Bushman Rock Estate Winery and Vineyard, currently the only boutique winery in Zimbabwe. At Bushman Rock, we understand that one’s relationship with wine is personal and believe that visitors with an appreciation of wine will enjoy our diverse range.

Safari: Having introduced over 14 species of wildlife onto the 650 hectare game reserve, guests are able to enjoy fantastic wildlife viewing. The lodge offers vehicle safaris, walking safaris as well as horseback safaris.

Wedding Venues: Boasting beautiful views of the surrounding granite outcrops, this unique boutique vineyard and estate is able to offer an exceptional setting for any romantic and enchanting wedding or celebration. Venues range from 50 to 450 guests.

Conference Venues: With conferences facilities ranging in size, we are able to meet the individual needs of any intimate strategy session or large company conference.

Family friendly: Features include a playground and child-friendly cycle routes around the estate. There are various open water sources and as such, please ensure that all children unsure of water are supervised at all times

Romantic: Enjoy the privacy, with champagne on arrival and accommodation in the stunning Honeymoon Suite with its outside shower, four-poster bed and veranda. A private dinner will be served on the veranda of the suite and breakfast in bed.

Whether you are looking for a fun-filled break charged with activities and action or are looking for a slightly less pressured atmosphere to unwind and relax Bushman Rock’s Valley View Lodges are the ideal destination for you. Nestled in the granite outcrops above the Nyamasanga River, 40 minutes from Harare, the Lodge affords breath-taking views over the Bushman Rock. Hidden amongst tall indigenous trees, the thatched lodges offer complete privacy and seclusion.

The manicured gardens and rolling lawns provide the perfect setting for the quiet contemplation of nature. The surrounding Msasa woodland provides cool shade from which to watch the polo ponies in training or the wildfowl at play on the river. As our name suggests, the lodge affords stunning views of the valley and vineyards beyond. You may even glimpse antelope or giraffe feeding in the distant savannahs. If the strong African sun becomes too intense, you can cool down in the sparkling pool or grab a book from the library and relax under the trees.

Despite being so close to Harare, modern day life seems so remote; there are no TVs in the lodges and the complimentary Internet is restricted to the central lodge. Due to the lack of signal, your mobile phone will remain silent and the only message tone you will hear is the beating of the evening drums as they announce the serving of dinner. If something more than relaxing under a tree is required then our unique range of activities will ensure that all your action requirements are met.

All of our lodges, with their private lounges and large king size beds, provide a personal oasis in which to relax and unwind. At Bushman Rock we understand the strains of modern day life and with friendly staff, peaceful surrounds and personal service, we strive to ensure your stay with us is as relaxing as possible.

Bushman Rock Safaris

Part winery, part game reserve, part polo field, part boutique lodge: Bushman Rock has a number of faces to it. The vineyard was established in the 1930s by an Italian immigrant and today is one of the few vineyards remaining in what was Zimbabwe's primary wine-growing region. Wine tasting ($10) is available with prior notice, as are three-course lunches where you taste the estate wines before going on a game drive.

It's set on a 650-hectare property, home to giraffes, ostriches, buffaloes and zebras (among others), which you can see on a game drive or via horseback. It's a nice place to spend the night, too, with a pleasant lodge. It overlooks the polo ground, which hosts games on most weekends May to August. There are also ancient rock paintings on the premises you can visit.

It's about a 40-minute drive from Harare. If you're coming by bus, get off at the Jamaica Inn and call for a lift.

Bushman Rock Safaris: An Elegant Affair

by Jean Dollery

Vistas of vineyards, world-class polo fields and a distant lake melting into the bracasthesia-clad granite hills beyond instantly sets Bushman Rock Safaris apart from other safari outfits in Zimbabwe.

A smiling Sharon bearing homemade lemonade greeted us warmly on arrival and we were seamlessly settled in no time.

Enter Johnathan Passaportis (or Jono) – a gentle giant of unaffected charm – our host and the managing director of Bushman Rock Safaris. We lunched on

a freshly prepared platter of cold meats, salad and cheese. Jono is passionate about their vision and has a game plan. Ultimately the owners want Bushman Rock Safaris to be a horse riding safari and polo tourist destination. It is a long and arduous road.

“Polo is pretty niche, and for this operation to work initially it needs broader appeal,” Jono says. Luckily, the owners are patient and creative people.

Bushman Rock Safaris offers a whole lot more than just horse riding. This estate happens to be one of only two vineyards in Zimbabwe. The winery is a massive building with a hung floor suspended above the wine making vats and with striking views across a floodlit polo arena to a lake and the rocky ridge beyond. Flanked by vines and iceberg roses, the scene is the Cape Winelands meeting the bushveld. The smell of oak and fermented grapes is strong. The owners plan to utilise this space as a farm-to-table restaurant and tasting venue, the perfect function for such a grand area.

We head into the cellar and settle into some animated wine tasting. Bushman Rock has 14 hectares of vines, primarily noble varieties, carefully planted above the lake (for the cooling breeze) in granite rich soils which make for a unique Zimbabwean-styled wine with a more European flavour than the South African varieties. The range of wine is impressive and Jono is clearly proud of what is produced here. Nelia Kanyasa is the wine maker at Bushman Rock Winery – she is one of the few black female wine makers in the world.

Dinner was a sophisticated but casual affair with deliciously prepared and well presented food in the ambient dining room. Wine from the cellar, with a small selection of alternatives was on offer.

Bellies full and contented, we retired and tucked into our thatch cottage, (one of five), charmingly appointed in park-like gardens. The cottage has two large bedrooms en suite, individually styled, each with leafy outdoor showers. One bathroom has an inviting post-polo-soak bath. Comfortable furniture is arranged around a little jet master fireplace in a lounge large enough to sleep several children, with sliding doors onto the veranda.

An early morning walk led me to the wedding chapel, a simple thatched structure tucked between the trees. Bushman Rock is understandably a popular wedding venue. The reception area, which doubles as the polo club, is just across the full-sized polo field and by all accounts, the weddings are well-planned, intimate and memorable affairs.

I strolled on to the stable yard, keen to check on the horses and what I was about to let myself in for. Being incredibly nervous to mount a horse again for the first time in over five years, my fear was quickly allayed by the thrill of sidling up to wild game astride a well-behaved bay.

Jono had read my fear and mounted me on a horse upon which he knew I would be comfortable. Clearly this is his passion; he knows horses and speaks of them as one would about a person.

Jono started riding at the age of four, first as a show jumper and then when he discovered polo. He decided after finishing university in Exeter that he should learn to speak a second language and thus worked on a horse ranch as a guide in Argentina. Not only did he learn to speak Spanish; he also wrote the business plan for Bushman Rock Safaris while he was there. When Jono returned to Zimbabwe he shared his vision with local businessman, next door neighbour and mentor Afaras Gwaradzimba, together they created Bushman Rock Safaris.

“I came back to set up an African version of what I was doing in Argentina, which is basically taking people out on horse safaris and playing polo. Polo has always been part of the plan.” “We do special events safaris – for example if five riders come out to Africa, we will organise a multi-day horse safari. Guests breakfast in the lodge, ride out for a picnic lunch in the bush and a hammocked siesta, and then ride back in the evening. Guests ride every day, with a game of polo in between,” says Jono.

The owners are keen to encourage both riders and non-riders to play polo. Anyone is welcome to play at Bushman Rock provided their riding skills are proficient. Jono gives a couple of lessons in advance to assess the rider’s ability and to match horses to players. Even non- riders can have initial lessons with a riding instructor until he is confident the rider is ready to play. Horses are leased out at $35 a chukka.

Bushman Rock has a Polo Club which is affiliated to the Zimbabwe Polo Association.

“We are trying hard to grow the game of polo in Zimbabwe. We are doing it by being open and focussing on the international way of playing polo where there are patrons and professionals. Everyone in between hires horses to play.”

If “all things equine” is not your thing, and you don’t like wine, all is not lost. There are fascinating rock paintings to explore with knowledgeable guides who can share a fascinating insight to the history of this area.

Take a bush walk or a game drive through the 750 hectare estate and see buffalo, eland, sable, kudu, zebra, giraffe and many other species. Just walking through the bush here is a treat.

Theo’s lake is a prominent feature at Bushman Rock Safaris. Bird life abounds and the fishing is good. There is a small beach to chill on and canoes to paddle. A pontoon is also available for those of a more social nature.

Day trippers are welcome by prior arrangement so those who live in Harare wondering what to do on a Sunday… your problem is solved. My advice, however, is take a day or two to explore this remarkable estate and experience all it has to offer.

” Loads of memories that will last a lifetime! I've just arrived home after spending 2 magical weeks in Zimbabwe on a working holiday in Antelope Park. Words can't express how amazing it was, there was so much to do, so much to see and now there is so much to miss! I absolutely adored the team, everyone was super kind and lovely! The projects are fantastic, had loads of opportunities to ride horses, spend time up-close with wildlife and enjoy all the wonders that Africa has to offer! Loads of memories that will last for a lifetime! Thank you African Horse Safaris! Rebeka Schmidt Zimbabwe Working Holiday - Zimbabwe

SAMPLE ITINERARY

** The itinerary is very flexible and can easily be tailored to suit different groups. For example, increasing or decreasing the amount of time dedicated to polo. There is also the option of adding in a trip to the iconic Victoria Falls or a horse safari in Hwange.

DAY 1 - ARRIVAL AT HARARE INTERNATIONAL

A Bushman Rock representative will meet you at the airport and bring you straight out to Bushman Rock. You will settle into your lodge and meet the team.

Depending on your arrival time, you may have the opportunity to tour our stables, meet the grooms and get acquainted with our herd of ponies. A short introductory ride through the vineyards and around the lake allows you to get to know our horses and equipment. A climb up the mountain on horseback brings you to a spectacular sundowner spot overlooking the lake and vines and onwards over the wildlife reserve. Mount-up and return to the lodges for a sumptuous farm supper.

BUSH RIDE & HILLCREST EQUESTRIAN CENTRE

Head out after breakfast through the vineyards and open the horses up for a long canter along the firebreaks. Once we arrive at Hillcrest we will be taken on a farm tour; viewing the Nile Tilapia ponds, the free-range chicken houses, small dairy herd, and market and herb gardens. Hillcrest is also an FEI registered Three Phase Eventing venue and we will walk the course and chat with the course designer and coaches. Lunch is served at the Hillcrest Club House and a great understanding of farm life is gained through chatting with the team.

Afternoon ride will take us through the community with some lovely long canters along windy, sandy bush roads and back through the wildlife reserve to the stables. A traditional African braai dinner (bbq) served under the trees at the lodge gardens. As we sit around the warmth of the fire we will be serenaded by the cries of the night apes and hoot of the owls and will hopefully spot a giraffe as it comes to eat the acacias at the lodges.

EXPERIENCE POLO DAY

This is an absolute must for any passionate horse rider. Designed to give our guests the basic understanding of  the “Sport Of Kings” we start off with a short explanation of rules and skills needed. A few fun games played on your feet with a foot mallet always gets the competitive spirit going and then we mount up and have a go on horseback. After a tea break, we split off into teams and we compete for the prestigious Rebecca Trophy during a chukka or two of polo. Rebecca was a giraffe that Jono Passaportis helped to rescue in the late 2000’s and rehomed at Bushman Rock. Rebecca had had a very tough life and loved Jono, so much so that she got very jealous of Justine (when she came on the scene. Rebecca unfortunately died of natural causes during the construction of the polo field and we have played for the Rebecca Trophy in her memory ever since. Following the tournament, a full traditional Zimbabwean braai (bbq) is served in he Polo Club House and wine and banter flows as we relive the glory and laugh at the lessons learnt on the pitch. An afternoon spent relaxing by the swimming pool or in the tranquillity of your room is followed by a starlight evening around the fire-pit, watching a slide show of photos taken from the polo day. The three course dinner is the ideal way to end a unique day of excitement that will make you want to return again and again

ALL DAY SAFARI

Today’s ride will start after a lovely relaxing breakfast at the lodge dining room. As we head out on single trails through the miombo forest, we keep our eyes peeled for the secretive bushbuck, sable and riverine loving nyala. Larger open plains areas and firebreaks allow for lengths of trotting and cantering but in general, the ride is more sedate and allows you to drink in the natural splendour of the African bush. The birdlife is fantastic and the diverse areas we explore will allow for sightings of eagles, woodland kingfishers, riverine loving herons and ducks, seed eating weavers and fruit eaters such as thrushes and bulbuls.

A sumptuous picnic lunch served in the shade of a massive acacia tree and you are able to relax and unwind in the silence of nature. Once the heat subsides we will take a stroll along the bubbling stream to the ancient rock fort that was home to various tribes over the centuries. As we explore the granite caves we will hear of the traditional lives of the San bushman and see their ancient rock art that adorns the cave walls. The Shona tribes of later years fortified the cave networks and we will search for signs of forgotten village life.

The short ride back to the camp will get you in the mood for a dip in the pool followed by afternoon tea served on the veranda. Relax around the fire-pit in the evening and enjoy a lodge dinner served in the dining room before retiring to your lodge.

CHILDREN: Whilst parents head out for the morning safari, children are transferred via safari vehicle up to Hillcrest Equestrian Centre where they will enjoy a 2hr riding and horsemanship lesson with FEI registered trainer Celeste Wright. They are then be returned via vehicle to the join parents for the picnic lunch and cave tour.

VILLAGE SCHOOL RIDE

Leisurely breakfast and morning stick and ball session or outride.

After an earlier breakfast, we mount up and head out through the wildlife reserve. We pass grazing herds of impala, eland and tsesebe and wind our way through the forests. Once we leave the park through the boundary fence we ride through the local villages passing fields of maize, grazing herds of cattle, sheep and goats and stop in at the local general dealer store to buy a cool drink. A short walk on we arrive at the village school where we tour of the facilities and then are entertained by the school choir and traditional dance troupe. The smiling faces and huge energy shown by the schoolchildren is truly inspiring when you realise just how little the school has. Bushman Rock donates to the school’s CDC for every visit to the school and monitor where and how the funds are expensed.

With full hearts, we mount up and ride back through the forests and grasslands of the wildlife reserve to the lodge where a late lunch is served under the magnificent Msasa trees in the lodge gardens. An afternoon relax followed by sundowner canoeing or pontoon ride on the picturesque Theo’s Lake and a tutored wine tasting of the Estate Wines. Or practice chukkas and then guests are taken for a vehicle safari and a surprise “cultural dinner” served in a secret location.

CHILDREN – Basics of Polo morning – Specifically aimed at younger members of the group our coaches will take children through the fundamentals of playing polo. From the four main hits needed to the skill of “hooking” an opponent and “riding them off” we will spend time with foot mallets, on the wooden horse and a 40minute mounted session. We will then meet you at the school for the school tour and return to the lodge for lunch.

CATTLE DRIVE & TRIP TO ANIMAL ORPHANAGE

An early start sees us out on horseback for a morning cattle drive. Our herd of cattle are run primarily to remove parasites from the grasslands resulting in lower parasitic volumes on our wildlife. These cattle are driven daily from their overnight corral (danga) to various grazing areas around the estate. The cattle munch on the grass and trees as they walk and the drive is an incredible experience, the chewing of the cattle, gentle swaying of your horse and the cry of the fish eagles above ensures a thoroughly enjoyable morning in the saddle.

Return back to the lodge for brunch and a clean-up and then we jump into the vehicles and head the 15km down the dust roads to the Twala Animal Sanctuary. This delightful animal orphanage has a huge array of animals saved and given sanctuary; from a one armed vervet monkey to swans collected from an old age home when they started to attack the residents. This orphanage is 100% dependant on donations and sponsorship the team on Twala do unbelievable work. The guides are amazingly knowledgeable and will explain the idiosyncrasies of each individual animal, and this trip is ideal for all ages. After the tour, relax under the shade and enjoy teas and cakes before returning back to the lodge. After an afternoon snooze head out to Sunset Rock where you will enjoy snacks and G&T’s whilst watching the sunset in the distance.

SAVANNA CAMP RIDE, TANA LEATHER FACTORY & FARM TOUR

An amazing day that starts as usual with a delightful breakfast at the lodges. The horses are loaded on to the truck and transported the 10km to DanaB Savanna Camp and we jump into the safari vehicles and head out after them. DanaB is a mixed farming operation and home to one of the biggest African Violet farms in the world, Tana’s bespoke leather factory and the beautiful Savanna Camp Wildlife reserve. We will be welcomed on the farm with tea and coffee and will have a guided tour of the violet operation, seeing the prorogation sheds, the state of the art greenhouses and growing rooms. We will then pop into Tana’s leather factory, owned and run by the amazing Tana Walsh. The collection of handmade bags, wallets, shoes, belts and whatever has taken Tana’s design fancy are truly amazing. Whilst touring the farm the horses will be tacked up and ready for us to head out into the Savanna Camp wildlife area. With beautiful sandy roads and open grasslands the riding will be slightly faster paced. The leafy, winding dirt roads are ideal for long canters and the long straight firebreaks make for an amazing gallop for those who are keen. The 470H wildlife reserve teams with tsesebe, eland, zebra and impala as well as the comical looking blesbok. Our ride will take us through this stunning wilderness to the unique Savanna Camp. Designed by Tana herself this little oasis lies in deep shade overlooking the giant grassland that lends the location its name. After a lovely bush lunch and a relax we will mount up and take a leisurely ride back to the vehicles and return to Bushman Rock for sundowners at the gazebo and dinner at the lodge.
