World's currently largest cruise ship class is produced exclusively for RCI-Royal Caribbean andin 2 sub-series - Oasis-Class (Allure OTS, Oasis OTS) and Oasis-Plus (Harmony OTS, Symphony OTS, Wonder OTS). These are sisterships from the fleet of the second- largest cruise shipping company in the world - RCCL-Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (as shipowner) that follows only Carnival Corporation (as shipowner).

As to vessels' dimensions, each boasts the unimaginable weight of 227,000-230,000 GT / gross tons, LOA length 362 m (1187 ft) and waterline width 47 m (154 ft). The extreme breadth is over 60 m (198 ft). As the GT is a volume measurement, the ship's actual mass (called displacement) is approx 100,000 tons (the hull alone weighs about 54,000 tons). Surpassing all passenger ship standards, building cost and all previous ship travel vacation concepts, the Oasis-class ships are currently the only passenger shipping vessels of such immense size.

The world's biggest cruise ship propulsion system guarantees the perfect maneuverability by 3 rotatable Azipod thrusters (suspended under the ship's stern), each with a huge electric motor and a 6 m (20 ft) propeller. The ship offers great stability due to its enormous size. And in times of need - there are 18 lifeboats, each with a capacity of 370 people.

Oasis-Plus class is also currently the world's most technologically advanced and energy-efficient cruise vessel ever built. It is equipped with a new-generation exhaust gas cleaning system (multi-stream scrubbers) and with a hull lubrication system allowing the ship to float on air bubbles (created around the hull) thus reducing drag and increasing fuel efficiency.

Another signature feature is the 7 "neighborhoods" (theme-park-like areas), 5 large swimming pools, a huge casino, a full-size volleyball/basketball court, large-capacity bars, and lounges. Oasis-Plus ships additionally have waterslides (created by Aquatic Design & Engineering) and a total of 23 "water fun" areas (swimming pools, large-size outdoor jacuzzies, waterslides, flowriders/surf simulators). The stern-located Ultimate Abyss water slide is 150 ft (45,70 m) above sea level. It features 31 sections, two 360-degree circles, 27-degree slide incline, 28 m (92 ft) serpentine-like drop, 13,14 seconds average sliding time (top to bottom), around 300 small LED lights and graffiti artworks throughout.

These phenomenal ships were manufactured by STX Europe (shipyard Turku Finland / Oasis-class) and in by STX France (shipyard Saint-Nazaire France / Oasis-Plus). The new Oasis ships are 2,15 m (7 ft) longer.

Costa Toscana is Costa Cruises' 185,000 gross ton flagship and has impressive dimensions: 1,106 feet in length and 138 feet in width. Accommodating a maximum of 6,554 passengers, it offers 2,663 staterooms and employs up to 1,678 crew members. 

Like its predecessor, Costa Smeralda, Toscana is LNG-powered and features the iconic Colosseo as its centerpiece. Notable venues include the Aperol Spritz Bar which offered beach cocktails, and Sushino at Costa, a new sushi bistro.

8. Costa Smeralda

Costa Smeralda is the flagship of Costa Cruises' Excellence-class vessels that stretches 1,106 feet in length and spans 138 feet in width, with a gross tonnage of 185,000. With a capacity to accommodate up to 6,554 passengers and 1,678 crew members, it offers a plethora of dining options, including 11 restaurants and snack bars, along with 19 bars and lounges. 

Archipelago stands out among its culinary offerings, presenting innovative cuisine crafted by three world-renowned chefs. The ship also hosts a variety of entertainment options, centered around the Colosseo, featuring live performances and social gatherings. 

Additionally, Costa Smeralda features an array of recreational amenities, including 13 pools and hot tubs, an aqua park, and the Beauty Spa Solemio, ensuring a memorable cruise experience for all aboard. It is one of the largest ships in the world .

7. MSC World Europa

Gross Tonnage: 215,863

MSC World Europa is the pioneering vessel of MSC Cruises' MSC World-class fleet that debuted in December 2022 as the cruise line's first LNG-propelled ship. With futuristic design elements, it features a 341-foot promenade adorned with Meraviglia-class LED sky screens and ocean vistas. 

With 2,626 staterooms and capacity for 6,762 passengers, it offers different entertainment zones, including a serene adult area and a family zone with bumper cars and roller skating. The ship hosts a 300-seat multifunction entertainment venue, Luna Park Arena, and 13 restaurants and bars. It is one of the most luxurious cruise ships in the world .

Allure of the Seas is an Oasis-class cruise ship owned by Royal Caribbean International. The cruise epitomizes grandeur with its staggering dimensions. Constructed in 2008 at the Perno shipyard in Turku, Finland, she measures 50 millimeters longer than her sister ship, Oasis of the Seas. 

At her launch in November 2009, she claimed the title of the world's largest passenger ship , a feat only overshadowed by her sister, Harmony of the Seas, in June 2015. With an impressive overall length of 362.12 meters, Harmony of the Seas set a new standard in maritime magnificence. Allure of the Seas found her home in Galveston, Texas, in November 2022, before relocating to Port Canaveral, Florida, in October 2023, where she now embarks on 3- and 4-night cruises to the Bahamas, continuing her legacy of luxury and adventure. As of 2022, all ships of the Oasis class rank as the world's largest passenger ships.

This year’s World’s Best Awards survey closed on March 2, just before widespread stay-at-home orders were implemented as a result of COVID-19. The results reflect our readers’ experiences before the pandemic, but we hope that this year’s honorees will inspire your trips to come — whenever they may be.

The world’s biggest ships aim to be crowd pleasers, with so much to do on board that they can rival resorts on land. And whether your interest is a vacation with the extended family , a chance to see multiple destinations on a single trip, or simply relaxing with a never-ending ocean view, the best mega-ship ocean cruise lines can deliver.

Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated individual cruise ships on their cabins and facilities, food, service, itineraries and destinations, excursions and activities, and value. Those assessments were combined to generate results for the cruise lines in five categories; mega-ship ocean cruise lines have ships that can carry 2,200 passengers or more.

This year’s list demonstrates a steady-as-she-goes approach from voters, who tended to give the highest marks to the same lines they favored in 2019. One of them, Holland America Line, is this year’s No. 3. “The entertainment was excellent,” said one reader. “The Koningsdam was a great ship for the cabins, the speciality dining (especially Club Orange), and the live music venues,” said another. Voters said Holland America’s itineraries were winners, too. “Will definitely travel with them again,” said one fan.

The iconic ships of No. 2 Cunard were also favorites this year. Its lines sail in Alaska , in the Mediterranean , and around Australia and Asia, but the week-long transatlantic crossings between Southampton and New York aboard the Queen Mary 2 remain among the most beloved voyages. “It’s one of my favorite cruises,” said a voter. “No real stops or shore excursions, but there was so much to do on the ship that I gave it an excellent rating.” Several readers said the staff made cruises memorable, and others also gave amenities on board high marks.

Readers ranked Princess Cruises No. 5 this year because it offers many choices — the brand has 16 ships — and terrific value. “The staff were all attentive and excellent. The captain was wonderful. Our cabin steward was fantastic,” said one voter, who sailed aboard the Grand Princess. “This was our first Princess cruise,” said a reader about a recent trip on the Royal Princess. “The ship and experience were wonderful. We’ve cruised on several other lines, and Princess is above the crowd. The food, service, entertainment, and overall experience were all above our expectations.”

Still, one cruise line had more magic than the others: Disney. Read on to find out why it topped the list and which other companies join it on this year’s list of the best mega-ship ocean cruise lines.

1. Disney Cruise Line

Voters simply love Disney Cruise Line, a perennial favorite in the World’s Best Awards. While Disney’s first-place score this year dropped slightly from last year’s, Disney repeats as winner thanks to nearly flawless service, plus a range of ships and itineraries that appeal to all ages. “They’re my favorite cruise line,” said one representative reader, who specifically mentioned the food, the entertainment, and the stateroom design. “Disney cruises have the same imagination and commitment to excellence we’ve come to expect from all things Disney,” said another reader. While some may think of the line as just for families, many readers mentioned that it’s a winner for adults-only trips as well. Said one reader, “I’ve cruised with Disney 20 times now and am never disappointed. Castaway Cay is the best cruise line private island, hands down. They’re great for kids, but the ships are also ideal for adult couples. Disney does the best job of any cruise line at keeping the adults-only areas just that.”

Full List: The 10 Current Largest Cruise Ships on the Planet

If you think cruise ships have gotten bigger, it’s not just your imagination. Whereas a ship built in the 1990s might hold 2,500 passengers and come in at around 75,000 gross tons (a measure of ship size), that’s nowhere near the ships built today.

Today, any new ship from a major line will be at least 140,000 gross tons, with many much larger than that. Passenger counts have also swelled, with many new ships carrying 5,000 cruisers when completely full.

But the largest cruise ships on the planet are in another league altogether. They can measure up to 250,000 gross tons (roughly triple the size of a ship built 30 years ago!) and when at full capacity with crew, have nearly 10,000 people onboard.

Why Are Cruise Ships So Big?

Truth be told, while the size of massive modern ships is staggering, not everyone likes the large ship experience. Some people can find them too crowded and too hard to navigate. But not everyone feels that way, and cruise lines have invested literally billions into building ships that are as large as possible. So what is the appeal of a mega ship?

Amenities/Activities: For passengers, the big advantage of size comes with everything that can be fit onto the ship. Instead of the old days where there was a pool, some loungers, and a buffet, modern mega ships are literal resorts at sea.

There are multiple pools, more than a dozen restaurants, casinos, ziplines, literal parks, ice-skating rinks, rock-climbing walls, spas, and more bars than you can count on your fingers and toes.

All of that combines into an experience that can exceed expectations and keep passengers coming back for more.

Efficiencies of Scale: For cruise lines, one big positive about a larger ship are greater efficiencies. Instead of having the cost of building two smaller ships — and the costs of having two sets of crew to run them both — one larger ship offers the chance for just as many passengers at a lower cost.

Marketing: Finally, one overlooked aspect of why cruise ships are bigger than ever has to do with marketing and publicity. There’s a certain awe and interest that comes with the world’s largest ships. Seeing them in port is essentially a giant billboard for a cruise line. And the largest ships also get significant press due to their size. All of that can translate into more interest, ticket sales, and prices for the newest — and biggest — ships.

With that in mind, here is the current list of the world’s largest cruise ships as of now…

Icon of the Seas

When it comes to the largest ships, Royal Caribbean is the undisputed leader with the six biggest cruise ships in the world. But the king of the fleet — and the largest cruise ship in the world — is Icon of the Seas .

Icon of the Seas doesn’t sail with passengers until 2024, but it’s already made waves. It’s not just the massive size (250,800 gross tons and 7,600 passengers at maximum capacity), but what’s onboard. A full-fledged waterpark, seven different pools, and eight different neighborhoods offer a spot for everyone. This ship looks to change cruising forever.

• Passenger Capacity: 5,610 double occupancy; 7,600 max capacity
• Year Built: 2023

Wonder of the Seas

Wonder of the Seas is the latest edition of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class ships (until Utopia of the Seas arrives in 2024), which were the largest class in the world until the new Icon class took the torch. Still, it’s not as if Wonder of the Seas is a slouch.

At 235,600 gross tons, there’s room for 7,084 passengers and an amazing amount to see and do onboard. This includes Central Park, the mid-ship outdoor promenade that winds through lush gardens, and the AquaTheater, where performers put on aquatic shows, including towering high dives at sea.

• Passenger Capacity: 5,734 double occupancy; 7,084 max capacity
• Year Built: 2022

Symphony of the Seas

Each iteration of Oasis-class ships has arrived just slightly larger than the previous when it comes to gross tonnage. That means they each had their time as the largest in the world before another arrived on the scene. In this case, Symphony of the Seas (228,000 gross tons and the ability to hold 6,680 passengers) took the crown in 2018.

Today, it’s the third-largest cruise ship on the planet, but it’s no slouch. It holds seven different neighborhoods, nearly 3,000 staterooms, three waterslides, and Ultimate Abyss — a 10-story dry slide.

• Passenger Capacity: 5,518 double occupancy; 6,680 max capacity
• Year Built: 2018

Harmony of the Seas

Built in 2016, Harmony of the Seas features 18 decks, more than 225,000 gross tons (about 10% smaller than Icon of the Seas) and can carry nearly 6,700 passengers when completely full. That’s good enough to make it the fourth-largest cruise ship in the world.

It features many of the same components of other ships in the class, like the adults-only Solarium, Central Park, and the AquaTheater. That’s not to mention 17 different spots to grab a bite to eat.

• Year Built: 2016

Oasis of the Seas

The ship that started the trend of truly mega ships is also the namesake of the Oasis class — Oasis of the Seas. If you notice, most of the largest ships on our list were built recently. This ship first began sailing in 2009 and set off the “arms race” of larger ships that continues today.

Following a refurbishment, it now features three waterslides, a dozen lounges, 2,801 cabins (including one with a panoramic view right above the ship’s bridge), a splash pad for kids, and even an escape room themed like the 1960s NASA mission control. And did we mention 20 different places to find something to eat?

• Length: 1,187 feet
• Passenger Capacity: 5,602 double occupancy; 6,771 max capacity
• Year Built: 2009

Allure of the Seas

Following a refurbishment of Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas — which was the second ship in the class and built in 2010 — is actually now the smallest of the group based on tonnage. Still, that’s good enough for sixth largest in the world at “just” 225,000 gross tons.

On the ship, you’ll find 18 decks, 2,748 staterooms and more than 6,800 passengers when completely full. That’s definitely a lot of people, but remember that you also have a lot more space to spread out, giving plenty of elbow room.

• Year Built: 2010

MSC World Europa

While Royal Caribbean has a lock on the largest ships, the title of largest cruise ship from outside that cruise line goes to MSC World Europa.

Coming in at almost 216,000 gross tons, it’s roughly 14% smaller than Icon of the Seas. But don’t think it’s some slouch. From bumper cars to seven pools to an 11-story slide, there’s no shortage of things for kids to do. Adults will love the 13 different dining options and an indoor promenade or Panorama Lounge for shopping, having a drink, or just relaxing.

This ship will be joined in 2025 by sister-ship MSC World America, set to sail stateside.

Costa Smeralda/Costa Toscana (Tie)

These two ships come in at a tie for the eighth-largest cruise ship in the world. Built in 2019 and 2021, respectively, they both belong to Costa Cruises. And if the shape of the ship looks familiar, that’s because Costa is a sister line to Carnival. A similar design is used for Carnival’s largest ships, Mardi Gras, Celebration, and Jubilee. However, those ships come in just under the 185,000 gross tons seen with Smeralda and Toscana.

Both ships offer 13 pools and hot tubs, nearly a dozen restaurants and just under 20 bars and lounges. And if you like balcony views? There are 1,550 balcony rooms on each, providing plenty of options for the roughly 6,500 passengers that can sail at full capacity.

P&O Arvia

Taking the crown as the 10th-largest cruise ship in the world is Arvia from P&O Cruises. Measuring just under 185,000 gross tons, it offer a similar design to ships like Costa Smeralda and Carnival Celebration, but don’t think these ships are all the same.

For instance, Arvia features a unique Skydome area that is a pool area with retractable roof by day and an entertainment venue by night. It also features its own rum distillery onboard, meaning you can take home rum literally made on the ship. Kids will love the Altitude zone that features a ropes course, mini-golf, and more. There’s also Mission Control, a submarine-themed escape room.

All told, a reported 6,685 passengers can enjoy the ship at one time.

The suspension of cruise activities has caused over 245,000 job losses and about $32 billion in monetary losses, according to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). 

In 2019, the U.S. cruise industry generated an economic impact of $55.5 billion, up 5.3% from 2018, according to CLIA’s annual report. The 13.8 million U.S. passenger embarkations in 2019, up nearly 8% from 2018, created $25.1 billion in direct spending and supported 436,600 jobs.

The U.S. government is preparing to pass a stimulus package of about $2 trillion to aid the economy and businesses. Unfortunately, the largest cruise ship companies in the world are not headquartered in the US. The CLIA confirmed that the Royal Caribbean (NYSE: RCL ), Norwegian Cruise Line (NYSE: NCLH ), and Carnival Corp (NYSE: CCL ) are incorporated in other countries, and they won’t be eligible for the $500 billion aid for the large conglomerate in the massive bill from the Senate. But thanks to the Fed, Carnival Corp reported having raised $6 billion in April 2020, and the company sold $4 billion in senior secured notes due in 2023 at an 11.5% interest rate and another $1.75 billion in convertible notes due in 2023 at a 5.75% interest rate. The company also raised $625 million by selling an additional common stock at a low price of $8 per share.

According to  Statista , the number of global cruise passengers has increased to 29.7 million in 2019 from 17.8 million in 2009 with an annual growth rate of 5.4%. Besides, the cruise industry has generated total revenue of  $150 billion globally. In a CLIA-Qualtrics Survey, two out of three cruisers are willing to cruise within the next year. And specifically, 58% of international vacationers who have never cruised are likely to try it in the next few years. In 2020, Expedia posted a 30% surge in search numbers for cruises in October and November. With the vaccines being rolled out since the beginning of this year, booking activities for cruises continue to rise.

In October 2020, shares of the largest cruise companies rose after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared the new “ Conditional Sailing Order ” after the 8 months of no-sail order. This new order will help cruise lines recover.

Ready to Set Sail in 2021

Although operations are still restricted in the U.S., the rest of the world is sailing back to the seas. TUI Group’s Hapag-Lloyd Cruises set sail to Hamburg in July 2020. The new normal in boarding a cruise ship requires a negative COVID-19 test. Onboard, the company installed a testing lab and invested in cold fog machines for disinfecting public areas and cabins. No COVID cases have been reported after 30 completed trips carrying more than 4,000 passengers.

Sailing in a pandemic is far from what it used to be before. Everyone is required to wear a mask and observe social distancing. Buffet stations are now manned by servers which is safer. And most of all, cruise ships are embarking with 50% of their passenger capacity. 

To protect their customers, cruise lines have invested in innovative technologies that will contain the spread of COVID-19. Royal Caribbean provides a snap-on electronic wrist band per passenger that gives digital access to their pre-registers for boarding, promotes cashless purchases, and gives them digital access to their cabin. Cruise companies have also improved their air filtration systems for safety.

15. OneSpaWorld (NASDAQ: OSW )

Based in The Bahamas, OneSpaWorld ranks among the 15 larges cruise companies in the world because of its massive exposure to the cruise industry. It is a provider of wellness and health services onboard cruise ships. In the third quarter, OSW reported total revenue of $117.1 million , a 72% decrease from $422.8 million with total liquidity of $62.2 million. The services offered by the company include body, salon, and skin care services, and products, personal training, and detoxification programs. OSW is operating in over 16 luxury cruise lines including Carnival, Costa Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Silversea, and Princess Cruises.

In May 2020, OSW received a $75 million rescue deal from global spa service provider Steiner Leisure.

14. Viking Line ABP (HEL: VIK1V)

Ranking 14th on our list of the 15 largest cruise companies in the world is Finland-based Viking Line with a market cap of $203 million. Aside from recreational travel services, the company also provides cargo carrier services and sails through the Baltic Sea between Estonia, Sweden, and Finland. Based on the company’s 2020 year-end report, Viking Line sales amounted to $227 million and total assets are worth $512 million. 

Shares of VIK1V fell 16.13% over the past twelve months.

13. Virgin Group

Ranking 13th on our list of the 15 largest cruise companies is London-based Virgin Voyages, a subsidiary of the Virgin Group with  $347.5  million worth of assets and $83.7 million net profit. Virgin Voyages is a new cruise line offering trips to Havana, Bimini, the Bahamas, Puerta Plata, and Costa Maya. Virgin Group was founded by serial entrepreneur Richard Branson in 1970 and today operates as a venture capitalist conglomerate. As an investment firm, Virgin Group operates in different sectors including travel and leisure, TV and radio, mobile, health, and finance. 

Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady is set to sail in the second quarter of 2021. The extravagant ship will have ultra-fast Wi-Fi onboard provided by telecom and satellite company SES Network. 

12. Genting Hong Kong (OTC: GTHKF)

Genting Hong Kong ranks 12th on our list of the largest cruise companies in the world with a market cap of $557 million. Genting owns world-famous fleets of cruise ships including Star Cruises, Dream Cruises, and the luxurious Crystal Cruises. In 2019, the company reported total revenue of  $1.5 billion , a decrease of 2.4% from $1.6 billion in 2018. Genting’s cruise revenue amounted to $1.3 billion making it the main driver for the growth of the company. 

Shares of GTHKF fell 12% over the past twelve months.

11. Hurtigruten AS

Norwegian transportation company Hurtigruten is a trusted provider of cruises to the most remote areas of Antarctica, Norway, Western Europe, the Baltic Sea, and Greenland. The company also operates as a public transportation service providing buses, ferries, and high-speed vessels not only in Europe but also in the US and South America. The company recently posted a loss of $195 million for 2020, citing pandemic-related restrictions.

In June 2020, Hurtigruten was the first cruise company to restart cruise operations with four ships navigating through the Norwegian coastal tours between Bergen and Kirkenes.

10. Saga Plc 

UK-based Saga Plc ranks 10th on our list of the 15 largest cruise companies in the world with a market cap of $737 million. Saga plc provides insurance and travel services for customers aged 50 and above. As of 2020, the company has net assets worth  $816.9 million . Saga reported forward booking of the cruise in 2021/2022 amounting to $40 million. In 2020, its underlying profit before tax came in at £109 million.

Shares of SAGA fell 9.30% over the past twelve months.

9. Lindblad Expeditions Holdings (NASDAQ:  LIND )

Ranking 9th on our list of the 15 largest cruise companies in the world is NY-based Lindblad Expeditions Holdings with a market cap of $1.04 billion. Lindblad Expeditions owns over 50 specialized cruise ships that sail to the most remote areas on Earth such as Antarctica, Galapagos, Alaska, and Egypt. 

In the third quarter of 2020, LIND announced tour revenues of over $1 million , down from $100 million in the same quarter in 2019.

8. NYK Line (OTC: NPNYY)

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha ranks 8th on our list of the largest cruise companies in the world, with a market cap of $4.84 billion. NYK Line operates as a cruise and shipping company with global operations. The company owns a fleet of 615 vessels making it the largest marine transporter in Japan. NYK Cruises was one of the Asian cruise companies that were allowed to operate in the middle of the pandemic in November 2020.  NYK Cruises and terminal and harbor transport services account for approximately 20% of the company.

Shares of NPNYY increased by 102.32% over the past twelve months.

7. TUI AG (OTC: TUIFF)

Germany-based Touristik Union International, or TUI Group, ranks 7th on our list of the largest cruise companies in the world, with a market cap of $6.6 billion. The company provides global tourism services from cruises to airlines, hotels, and resorts. TUI Group owns TUI Cruises, Marella Cruises, and Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. In 2020, TUI generated total revenue of $9.5 billion . In July 2020, the company’s TUIS Mein Schiff 2 sailed back to the sea carrying 1,200 passengers to have a Norwegian cruise.

Shares of TUIFF increased by 28.8% over the past twelve months.

6. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NYSE:  NCLH )

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. is one of the major cruise lines in the world, with a market cap of $9.3 billion. The company owns and operates the Norwegian Cruise Lines, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and Oceania Cruises. The company owns a total of 28 ships sailing through more than 490 destinations across the globe.

In 2020, the company’s revenue came in at $1.2 billion , an 80.2% decrease from $6.5 billion in 2019. Yet the company remains positive as they secured $1.2 billion of advance ticket sales and approximately $0.85 billion future cruise credits by the end of 2020. 

The company plans to sell a total of $500 million of its 5.875% Senior Notes due in 2026 in a private offering. Norwegian Cruise Lines continues its cruise suspension through the end of May 2021. 

Shares of NCLH decreased by 13.11% over the past twelve months.

How the cheapest interior and balcony cabins on Carnival's new cruise ship compare — and why the pricier one is worth it

I finally realized that my parents are, in fact, always right. Unfortunately, learning my lesson took a stint in a windowless cabin on a Carnival cruise .

In mid-May, I found myself stuck on a four-night Carnival Firenze cruise with my family. I was there for work — they were there to enjoy the sun. And that they did, as they luxuriated in a cabin with a balcony while I was stuck in a drab, windowless dungeon.

Never again will I think of my parents as 'snobby' for wanting the more expensive accommodation (sorry, Mom and Dad).

My parents, occasional cruisers, have always preferred staterooms with balconies. After my stint in the ship's interior accommodation, I now understand why balconies are the most popular cabin category.

For Firenze's cheapest itinerary in 2024 — a four-night roundtrip voyage from Long Beach, California, to Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico — a dual-occupancy interior cabin starts at $359 per person.

Ones with balconies command a minimum of $519 per person.

That's a $160 difference — and well worth the extra cash.

Carnival Firenze, the company’s newest vessel, set sail in April.

But that doesn't mean it's a brand-new ship.

Firenze had initially joined the fleet of another Carnival Corp brand , Costa Cruises, in 2020 with plans to launch in China — that is, until the COVID-19 pandemic.

Carnival Cruise Line then acquired Firenze and its sister ship, Venezia, in 2022 to grow its US footprint amid "strong interest in people wanting to sail with us," a Carnival spokesperson told Business Insider.

But my interior cabin looked more like an ancient motel than a four-year-old ship.

The spokesperson said Firenze underwent a two-month refresh to "install the Carnival Fun Italian Style Concept."

This Italianized vision came as a photo of Florence, Italy, behind my bed, half covered by pillows. It's for the best — the print looked misplaced, unnecessary, and tacky.

At least it matched the color palette of the equally ugly carpet.

The furniture was functional, but that doesn’t mean it was pretty.

The gray chaise clashed with the bafflingly ugly yellow and red carpet, while the faux marble and wood side table looked as cheap as my fare.

Thankfully, I have no gripes about the desk and closet. Both were sizable and looked like ones I've seen on more expensive and modern cruise ships.

'Expensive' and 'modern' could be the antithesis of my bathroom. It was a total eyesore.

The yellow and red tiles would've been better suited in a McDonald's. But no design crime was bigger than the lack of designated storage units.

The only shelving came preoccupied with tissue boxes and toilet paper rolls, an unnecessary amenity given that my cabin attendant cleaned and restocked my room daily. I would've rather had one less spare toilet paper roll if that meant I could keep my skincare products inside the bathroom instead of out on the desk.

On the bright side, the bathroom and bedroom felt surprisingly spacious for 150 square feet.

Unbeknownst to me, Carnival had put me in one of the ship's accessible, wheelchair-friendly accommodations. As a person without physical disabilities, this meant the shower — a curtain surrounding floor drains — was one of the largest I've had at sea.

Back in the living room, I could've starfished on the floor without hitting any furniture.

Complaints about its appearance aside, the room was large and almost perfectly functional — easily worth its $90-a-night price tag.

But without any natural light, the dated, dark, and mismatched furniture made my cabin look more like a drab hospital room.

Think I'm being dramatic? One look at my parent's balcony cabin will prove my point.

Some of the furniture in my dungeon and their breezy hotel room at sea looked identical.

But the light-filled room and less hideous carpet made the chaise and side table feel more at home.

Unfortunately, nothing could've saved the still misplaced-looking photo of Italy.

However, no amount of natural light could've saved the stateroom from feeling cramped.

The cabin is 72 square feet larger than my interior one. But don't expect to starfish here: The narrow layout and furniture didn't leave much room to spare.

Our four-person family could comfortably lounge in my interior room. Four people inside the balcony cabin required flexible maneuvering around each other and the furniture.

The tiny bathroom made the one in my interior accommodation feel palatial.

Yet, despite being much smaller, the extra shelving — noticeably deprived of excess paper products — made this bathroom more functional.

But the tight layout is worth it for the private outdoor space and light.

The ocean breeze and view provided the perfect backdrop for my parent's peaceful early mornings.

Meanwhile, my early mornings were spent in a dingy, liminal space-like bedroom, never fully sure of the exact time. I felt like a gremlin who lived in perpetual darkness, only reminded that the sun had, in fact, risen when I stopped by my family's bright cabin.

Seeing my mom lounge around with the balcony door cracked open, reading some documents without turning the lights on, was enviable.

A quiet outdoor space is especially important on a ship like Carnival Firenze.

The vessel is loud and rowdy, as is expected of a Carnival cruise. I struggled to find a quiet, relaxing lounge that wasn't overwhelmed by screaming children, screaming adults, or poorly mixed music.

Our cabins were the only truly quiet spaces on the ship. And I'd much rather read a book on a balcony with ocean views than in a dreary, dark interior stateroom.

I should probably add an asterisk next to 'truly quiet spaces.'

The interior and balcony accommodations did share one terrible similarity: ultra-thin walls.

Rowdy passersby could be heard clearly from inside both rooms. The neighbors' TV and late-night conversations constantly woke my dad up. (Maybe my interior cabin wasn't so bad after all.)

But, like I said, I'd trade a gloomy stateroom for a balcony and the chance to eavesdrop on my neighbors.

As usual, my parent's decision to book a balcony instead of an interior cabin was the way to go.

Unless you're on an ultra-strict budget, it'll be worth the additional cost. A little sun and fresh air can go a long way for your sanity, especially on a ship where silence and peace are an upcharged luxury.
