Information about Bacuit Bay

Bacuit Bay

Situated in the northmost tip of Mainland Palawan, Bacuit Bay is composed of different islands that feature a wide and unique range of diversity of all living organisms found both underwater and on land which is perfect for nature lovers. In 1984, the government established certain areas in Northwestern Palawan as a marine turtle sanctuary. Seven years later, Bacuit Bay was proclaimed as a marine reserve by the government and later on a protected area. Today, the island is known as “the last ecological frontier of the Philippines” because of its scenic landscape and high biodiversity. Bacuit Bay is also considered as one of the best scuba diving destinations in the world where you can find Philippine endemic animals such as sea turtles, sea cows, manta rays, innumerable species of tropical fish and corals.

Bacuit Bay Archipelago

— Last updated on March 04, 2023

Palawan is one of the most popular destinations in the Philippines, but above this is the archipelago of Bacuit, considered one of the most beautiful bays in the world. Dozens of islands and islets, lagoons with turquoise waters, all surrounded by huge karst peaks… That is the picture perfect scenery you will discover during a boat trip to the famous Bacuit Bay .

THE RESULT OF A HAPPY DISCOVERY

The story goes that in 1979, a team of divers were forced to anchor their boat in the middle of the night. Apparently, a line used by tuna fishermen had blocked the propeller from their boat. Without even knowing where they were, they woke up the next morning surrounded by high limestone cliffs. The scenery was absolutely fabulous: lush forests, white sand beaches, turquoise water, and deserted islands. Four years later, the first dive station was established on the beautiful island of Miniloc, setting a path for tourism in El Nido, the closest inland town to the archipelago of Bacuit.

AN IDEAL DESTINATION FOR ISLAND HOPPING

The mesmerizing islands and islets of the Bacuit archipelago have become the playground for explorers and adventurers, who go from one island to another in search of the most beautiful beach. These trips made by bangka, a local boat, or by speedboat, are known locally as “ island hopping tours ” and allow tourists to discover the whole archipelago.

El Nido based travel agencies offer several tours (A, B, C, and D) , each one focusing on an area of the bay. Departures are daily and trips usually last all day (9 am to 5 pm), including a lunch break and snorkeling time to experience the underwater life of Bacuit Bay. This is a must if you want to truly experience this exceptional natural setting.

SITES NOT TO BE MISSED

All the islands and beaches of the bay are extraordinarily beautiful, but some are particularly stunning and we recommend that you not leave El Nido without having seen them with your own eyes!

  • The Big Lagoon is a must see. The warm and peaceful waters of this lagoon provide the perfect setting for a relaxing swim.
  • The incredibly beautiful Small Lagoon also allows you to swim up to a small lagoon hidden behind the cliffs. An experience not to be missed!
  • The largest island of Bacuit Bay is the island of Cadlao where you’ll also be able to see the highest peak of the archipelago, reaching 640 meters above the sea level. The island is known for its white sandy beaches, its hidden lagoons, and its abundant marine life, offering one of the best snorkeling spots in the bay.
  • Those who are looking for a bit of privacy will appreciate the island of Matinloc and its private beach, only accessible through an underwater tunnel.

WORLD FAMOUS DIVING SPOTS

With more than 30 dive spots and ideal weather , the Bacuit archipelago is one of the best scuba diving destinations in the world. On any given dive, you are likely to see dugongs, manta rays, sea turtles, and a very large number of fish species, some of which are endemic to the Philippines.

To protect this biodiversity, the Philippine government decided to create the El Nido-Taytay Managed Resource Protected Area in 1998. This reserve, which is the largest marine sanctuary in the Philippines, includes a 360-square-kilometer aquatic area, including Bacuit Bay, its islands and islets, the land area around El Nido, and an area near Taytay.

NOT ONLY FOR ADVENTURERS

These dreamy islands not only attract adventurers and divers, but all kinds of travelers, as there are other things to do in El Nido. It is also the perfect place to enjoy the beautiful beaches and simply read a book under a palm tree while drinking a nice cocktail…

Best Island Hopping Tour in El Nido

Which of these El Nido tours should you book? A few years ago, tour A and tour C were the most popular. However, due to recent changes to put less pressure on the environment, all tours are equally very impressive. We personally would recommend adding tours A, B, or D to your Philippines Travel Guide .

Where to book an El Nido Island Hopping Tour?

Since the new regulations in 2019, there is a limited amount of people per day that may enter Bacuit Bay. We recommend you book at least two days ahead to be sure you have a spot. There are a few things to keep an eye on while booking an El Nido boat tour. Book a tour online or in town at ArtCafe .

  • Don’t go for the lowest price! The lowest-priced tours will mix you with another group, so they get a full boat. The quality of these tours can’t be guaranteed.
  • Make sure drinking water is included because you are not allowed to take plastic bottles.
  • Check if the tour includes the environmental tax. (200PHP) – Feb 2019
  • Check if snorkeling gear & kayak are included.
  • Try checking the company’s reviews on TripAdvisor.

bacuit bay tour

Big Lagoon  –  This enchanting lagoon is another popular snorkeling destination, with its deep, emerald waters often visited by sea turtles and a breeding ground for crustaceans and various fishes. Explore this big lagoon in the middle of Karst limestone formations and marvel at all these natural wonders in front of you.

Small Lagoon  –  Yet another magical lagoon of the tropical paradise, located on the cove of Miniloc Island. Swim slowly through a hole to see the calm emerald waters of the lagoon. Take a peek at the majestic limestone walls that show you the richness of El Nido’s marine life.

Popolkan Island  – T his is a stunning island surrounded by crystalline waters and amazing marine life. Snorkel to your heart’s content while you’re here.

Cudugnon Cave  –  This is an important archeological site. The rock formations inside the cave were formed thousands of years ago. According to the archeologists, the cave dwellers were from Borneo, who traveled through the land bridge that used to connect Palawan from Borneo. There’s the main cavern where one must crawl through a hole to enter, and ends into a smaller cavern, which was a burial site during the Neolithic period, according to the archeologists.

Hidden Beach  –  This is a small beach that cannot be seen from the open sea. This stunning place is surrounded by amazing limestone rock formations. The swimming area looks like a natural infinity pool with crystal clear waters.

Pinagbuyutan Island   –  This unique island is nothing like you have ever seen, with its fine white sand and clear, shallow waters good for swimming. Snorkel to your heart’s content as you enjoy El Nido’s protected marine life. Be amazed at the spectacular view in front of the island. This is no doubt comparable to the best beaches in the world.

Vigan Island  – This is also called the snake island due to its long s-shaped sandbar, connecting the island to another. During low tide, the sandspit becomes clearly visible, with shallow swimming areas on both sides.

Cadlao Lagoon   –  This is one of the best lagoons of El Nido. Marvel at the sedimentary rock formations around this mystical lagoon of the island.

Cathedral Cave   –  Pinasil island has a unique attraction – a cavern that is like a cathedral that can only be accessed by a kayak or a dinghy. Inside the cave is spacious, with walls made of black limestone rocks of various formations. The sun shines through the opening at the top during certain times of the day, lighting the cave’s interior and creating an enchanted scene. The birds also make their nests on the cavern walls which in turn gathered by the nest gatherers called “busyadors”.

Note: The highlights for this El Nido island-hopping tour might vary depending on the weather and sea conditions.

History of Bacuit Bay

The history of Bacuit Bay is intertwined with the cultural tapestry of Palawan itself, known as the "last frontier" of the Philippines for its pristine nature and relatively undeveloped landscapes. For centuries, local communities have depended on the bay's abundant resources. It is believed by many historians that ancient mariners passed through these waters during their migrations, and local legend whispers tales of sea-faring folk and hidden treasures.

In more recent history, Bacuit Bay has become known worldwide, gaining recognition for its extraordinary marine habitats and as a premier destination for adventurers and nature lovers. It has witnessed the ebb and flow of local industries focused around fishing and now, sustains a burgeoning eco-tourism sector that helps preserve its natural wonders while supporting the local economy.

It may surprise you to know that the bay wasn't always on the map for international travelers. It was the beauty of El Nido, located within Bacuit Bay, that captured the attention of the outside world some decades ago. Since then, the bay has become synonymous with island-hopping adventures in Palawan.

Why is Bacuit Bay Important?

Bacuit Bay is more than just a scenic hotspot; it's an ecological treasure trove. The bay is considered important for a multitude of reasons, primarily its vibrant marine ecosystems, which are part of the Coral Triangle—home to the highest diversity of marine species in the world. This makes it a vital area for marine conservation and biodiversity.

Additionally, the bay's unique geology, with its karst limestone formations, creates a captivating landscape that offers invaluable insights into natural history and geologic processes. Not just a place of beauty, Bacuit Bay is also an outdoor classroom that invites learning and scientific discovery.

Beyond the ecological and geological significance, Bacuit Bay is important for the local communities that reside on its shores. The bay is an integral part of their cultural identity and provides livelihoods through sustainable tourism practices, fishing, and other sea-based industries. Protecting and preserving Bacuit Bay means safeguarding the future of these communities and the natural heritage they thrive on.

The hotels and resorts located in El Nido town, Calaan beach, and Corong Corong beach provide an excellent base for exploring the islands of Bacuit Bay. However, during the high season, El Nido town and Corong Corong can become overcrowded with tourists. If you’re seeking a quieter vacation, it’s best to consider Las Cabañas Beach or Lio Beach.

Lio Beach and Las Cabañas Beach resorts are the perfect options for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of El Nido town. These resorts offer the perfect combination of island exploration and relaxing days on the beach. However, the beaches in town and Corong Corong are not suitable for swimming. If you’re looking for a suitable beach for swimming, Lio beach and Nacpan Beach, or the island resort, are better options.

For the ultimate luxury experience , the most exclusive resorts are located on the islands in Bacuit Bay. El Nido Resorts is a group of luxury resorts located on private tropical islands. This group of resorts, which includes Miniloc Island Resort, Lagen Island Resort, and Pangulasian Island Resort, is one of the most exclusive resorts in the Philippines, offering absolute discretion and first-class service (at higher prices than other resorts, of course).

Nacpan Beach is considered the most beautiful beach in El Nido, although it is a bit far for island hopping tours. It’s the perfect place to relax and swim in crystal-clear waters. Duli Beach is an excellent option for surfing, but there are only simple accommodations available.

Best Time to Visit the Small Lagoon

The Small Lagoon in El Nido, Palawan, is a destination that can be enjoyed year-round, but there are certain periods that offer the best conditions for a memorable experience. Here’s a breakdown of the best time to visit the Small Lagoon:

Dry Season (November to April): The dry season, from November to April, is considered the peak season for tourism in El Nido. During this time, the weather is generally sunny, with minimal rainfall and calm seas. The dry season offers ideal conditions for water-based activities like kayaking, swimming, and snorkeling in the Small Lagoon. The visibility for underwater exploration is excellent, allowing you to appreciate the vibrant marine life and stunning coral reefs.

Shoulder Seasons (May and October): May and October fall under the shoulder seasons in El Nido. These months are characterized by transition periods from the dry season to the rainy season and vice versa. While there may be occasional showers or overcast days, the Small Lagoon can still be enjoyed during these times. The advantage of visiting during the shoulder seasons is that the tourist crowd is thinner, offering a more peaceful and intimate experience.

Rainy Season (May to September): The rainy season in El Nido runs from May to September, with August being the wettest month. During this period, there can be heavy rainfall and occasional storms. The rougher seas and limited visibility for snorkeling may deter some visitors. However, the advantage of traveling during the rainy season is that prices are generally lower, and accommodations are more readily available. If you don’t mind the occasional rain and prefer a quieter atmosphere, you can still enjoy the beauty of the Small Lagoon in the rainy season.

Ultimately, the best time to visit the Small Lagoon depends on your personal preferences and priorities. If you want to avoid the crowds and enjoy the clearest waters for snorkeling, the dry season is your best bet. However, if you prefer a more budget-friendly and less crowded experience, the shoulder seasons or even the rainy season can offer unique advantages.

It’s important to note that weather patterns can vary, and it’s advisable to check the forecast before planning your visit. Regardless of the season, always come prepared with sunscreen, insect repellent, appropriate swimwear, and a sense of adventure to make the most of your time in the Small Lagoon.

El Nido Tour D Review: Exploring the Best of Cadlao Island

Majestic limestone formations, secluded beaches, and a turquoise blue lagoon – that’s what you can expect to see on El Nido Tour D!

While the other island hopping tours in El Nido head to several different islands in Bacuit Bay, Tour D focuses primarily on the island of Cadlao – the largest one in the area.

However, this doesn’t mean Tour D is any less spectacular! I find that Cadlao Island is one of the most special places I’ve ever been to and Cadlao Lagoon is one of my favorite places in all of El Nido!

For this reason, I decided to write a detailed review of El Nido Island Hopping Tour D for you. Here, I’ll show you what destinations you’ll get to visit when joining this tour and where you can book your island hopping tour in El Nido!

Note: Your trust is important to me. Therefore, I’d like to point out that this article contains referral links (also known as affiliate links). This means I get a small commission if you buy a product after clicking on one of the corresponding links, which are marked with a *. There are no extra costs for you, but it helps me keep this blog ad-free. Thank you!

Cadlao Island on El Nido Tour D

El Nido Tour D Itinerary

Ipil Beach is a small yet beautiful beach on the mainland in El Nido. However, you can only reach it by boat or kayak, as there are no roads or paths leading to this beach from El Nido town! Here, you can swim in clear water, while enjoying the view of Helicopter Island and Cadlao Island (, which is where you’ll head next).

Cadlao Lagoon

Cadlao Lagoon on Island Hopping Tour D

Cadlao Lagoon is the highlight of El Nido Tour D, and in my opinion, it’s the most underrated lagoon in El Nido! It’s located on the western side of Cadlao Island and features magnificent turquoise-blue water. You can either swim inside or rent a kayak (, which you’ll have to do when booking the tour!) to paddle through this natural paradise.

The water is a mixture of saltwater from the sea and freshwater that’s originating in a small stream nearby. Thus, the water is not as warm as in other places in El Nido, though it’s wonderfully refreshing and the blue color of the water is just out of this world!

If you head to the right, you’ll be surrounded by high limestone cliffs, or you can chill out at a small beach on the left-hand side of the lagoon. Furthermore, if you like to snorkel, you’ll have a blast exploring the sea life at the beginning of the lagoon, where you can find Butterflyfish, Nudibranchia, and blue starfish!

Pasandigan Beach

Pasandigan beach is located in front of the jaw-dropping, gray limestone that’s towering on Cadlao Island.

When you’re here, you should make sure to ask your tour guide for Pasandigan Cave. This cave is hidden inside the limestone but can easily be entered. Inside, you can bathe in cold yet refreshing water that drops down from the limestone and mixes in with the saltwater.

It’s a cool little adventure (sorry, but I’m a sucker for bad jokes…) that should not be missed, though it’s often being overlooked by tourists!

Paradise Beach

Paradise Beach

Paradise Beach didn’t get its name for nothing! Like Pasandigan Beach, it’s located in front of beautiful rock formations, which provide the perfect background for your holiday photos!

Here, you’ll also find a nice swimming area with clear water and beautiful white sand. It’s a great spot to swim and relax before heading to the next stop on your island hopping tour!

Nat Nat Beach

Nat Nat Beach

Another great spot on El Nido Tour D is Nat Nat Beach, which is Cadlao’s closest beach to town. However, this beach is not as ideal for swimming but perfect for snorkeling, as most of the area is covered in corals, which makes it a true underwater paradise!

To snorkel, you’ll want to head to the southern side of the beach, where you’ll find large amounts of corals and thousands of fish! Many locals even agree that it’s one of the best snorkeling spots in all of El Nido!

Bukal Beach

Bukal Beach is located on Bukal Island (or as I like to call it: “Cadlao Junior”), which is on the Eastern side of Cadlao, and offers a wonderful view of its large neighbor.

It’s the perfect beach to kick back and relax in clear water while enjoying the view of Cadlao Island and Bacuit Bay!

How Much Does the El Nido Island Hopping Tour D Cost?

The El Nido Island Hopping Tour D costs 1200 PHP (appr. 24 USD). Though, if it’s your first island hopping tour in a 10-day period, you’ll also have to pay a 200 PHP (appr. 4 USD) environmental fee on top, which amounts to a total cost of 1400 PHP (appr. 28 USD).

Still, it’s the cheapest island hopping tour in El Nido and the best way to see Bacuit Bay if you’re traveling Southeast Asia on a budget !

Where Can I Book El Nido Tour D?

You can book El Nido Tour D from any travel agency in town, e.g. the one from Art Café , as island hopping is the major attraction in El Nido!

The tourism department has implemented fixed prices. This saves you the hassle of running around looking for the best deal, as the prices are the same anywhere in town. However, if you book your ticket online, for example through GetYourGuide* , you may be charged a service fee on top of the regular price!

Keep in mind that you need to buy your ticket at least one day in advance, and don’t forget to bring your ID when booking the tour!

For more tips about activities in the region, check out my article about the best things to do in El Nido !

Conclusion: Is the El Nido Island Hopping Tour D Worth it?

View of Cadlao Island and El Nido

Yes, I think El Nido Tour D is the most underrated island hopping tour in El Nido! Most people choose to book Tour A or Tour C due to the infamous Small and Big Lagoon from Tour A and the hidden beaches of Tour C.

Nonetheless, Tour D also has great places to offer that should not be overlooked! Plus, it’s cheaper and typically less crowded than any other island hopping tour in the area!

The only thing you should consider when booking Tour D is that most places on Cadlao Island can also be reached by kayak. Therefore, you may want to check out the other El Nido tours, if you’re planning to do a lot of kayaking in the area and are not keen to visit the same places twice!

If you book an island hopping tour in El Nido, you should make sure to bring plenty of sunscreen, sunglasses, and (obviously) swimwear. Lunch and snorkels are usually included in the island hopping packages, though I recommend confirming this with your travel agency or tour guide before hopping on board!

El Nido Tour D is not only the cheapest, but also the least crowded island hopping tour in the area. This means you can enjoy the marvelous beaches of Bacuit Bay in a quiet setting without too many tourists being around!

In my opinion, the highlight of El Nido Tour D is Cadlao Lagoon, which consists of astonishingly turquoise-blue water surrounded by incredible lime stone formations! Plus, there’s also a small beach where you can relax and a beautiful snorkeling area, where you can find plenty of fish and corals. What else could you ask for?
