Welcome to Lancashire…
The Best Kept Village Competition, focuses on the hundreds of rural, semi-rural and industrial villages that give Lancashire its sense of history and time; villagers encouraged to take pride in the location and surroundings, to care for and take care of these many residential jewels, and to put their villages forward across many categories in this popular and inclusive annual competition.
The competition marked its Diamond Jubilee in 2018, celebrating 60 years of 'inspiring communities to work together to make their villages a better place to live'.
The competition is open to all villages, hamlets and settlements in Lancashire. We encourage all Lancashire villages to enter and to be part of something quite special and communitarian.
2023 Competition
Last year's competition concluded in October with the Presentation Event at Eaves Hall West Bradford when winners were announced. Preparations began earlier in the year and entries invited for the 2023 'Lancashire Best Kept Village Competition', which saw three rounds of judging including the final two in each class. Our judges visiting villages large and small all over Lancashire, all hoping to be named 'Best Kept Village', as well as submitting entries for the increasingly popular 'Outstanding Features' category nominations.
We were very grateful to all of our judges and in particular The Hon. Mr Justice Peter Openshaw who oversaw the ' Finalist ' judging - two in each class - late August.
We piloted a new class called 'Tidy Towns'. This had arisen due to many of the Lancashire Villages becoming much larger due to recent building. It was also felt that identifiable communities within a town could benefit from this category as participation does encourage Community Spirit and Pride. Whilst based on the principles of the Best Kept Village Competition there are some small differences. As it is a small Pilot this year, Entry Forms for 'Tidy Towns' were obtained from the Competition Secretary.
Following the enforced hiatus in 2020 and a resumption in 2021 - albeit with still some caution impacting numbers involved - it has been good to see the competion return and evolve with villages across Lancashire competing for both 'Lancashire Best Kept Village' and 'Outstanding Features' categories.
Winners (2023) : Champion Class: Elswick Large Village Class: Sabden Medium Village Class: Town Green Small Village Class: Grindleton Hamlet Class: Little Eccleston Tidy Town: Ingol 2023 Results
The 2022 competition saw 47 villages entering across the 5 categories with a further 262 entries across the 'Outstanding Features' categories. There were 10 finalists, 2 in each category ( 2022 finalists ). Our special guest judge, Guy Topping, Managing Director of Barton Grange, took on the task of final judging and was present at our Presentation Event at Eaves Hall on 17th October to award the prizes. A big thank you to him. The overall winner and Champion Village is Bretherton, congratulations to them and our other winning villages - Winners 2022 .

Previous Years
The 2022 competition saw 47 villages entering with a further 262 entries across the 'Outstanding Features' categories - Bretherton was announced Champion Village. Our special guest judge, Guy Topping, Managing Director of Barton Grange, took on the task of final judging and was present at our Presentation Event at Eaves Hall (17/10/22) - Winners 2022 .
Whilst we had hoped to be able to go ahead with the 2020 competition, Government announcements and the impact of Covid-19 measures meant that we took the decision not to proceed. Happily, we were able to announce that the competition could go ahead in 2021, with entries requested by 17th April - 46 villages entered. Making the final in 2021, were the villages of Grindleton, Halsall, Pilling, Barton, Blacko, Little Eccleston, Whitechapel, Barley and Wiswell ; Ralph Assheton (Sheriff of Lancashire 2020) was the overall judge, and Blacko was announced as our 2021 Champion Village and overall winner. Full details of 2021 Competition HERE ( PDF Download ).
The 2019 competition had 56 villages entering across the categories. Our 2019 overall winner was Higham as judged by John Gilmore of Radio Lancashire. Full details .
Our thanks to all those who enter and participate in our 'Best Kept Village Competition'. Big thanks too to our Judges, the LBKVC team and committee and our sponsors.

The Committee is pleased to announce this year's competition is now underway with villages entering 'Best Kept Village', 'Outstanding Features' and new 'Urban Communities' categories (entry forms below).
Judges training sessions to took place 10th April and 11th May at Elswick Vllage Hall.
The 2023 results were announced at our Presentation Event which took place at Eaves Hall West Bradford 16th October and awards for 'Best Kept Villages' and 'Outstanding Features' given out.

Outstanding Features (2023): There were 285 nominated 'Outstanding Features' from Lancashire villages across the 16 categories.
Tidy Town Winner (2023): Final judged by Guy Topping (MD of Barton Grange). --> ◆ Ingol
We recently held our Spring Conference/AGM at Mawdesley (18/5) where competition changes were reviewed and judges undertook a trial judging of the village to standardise marking. Judging begins on June 9th; final judging 29th & 30th August. Presentation Event at The Villa on 14th October.
2023 Results [ PDF ].
We would like to thank all the villages taking part this year and look forward to visiting as part of the judging process. As ever we much appreciate all who take part and support this event, especially our Judges, Committee and sponsors.
In 2019 the 'Constitution of the Competition' was updated and streamlined, simplifying all paperwork used by villages and judges; the Certificate of Merit part of the competition was overhauled, replaced by a secondary competition called 'Outstanding Features' - villages entering the main competition able to nominate up to 10 Outstanding Features of their village, and certificates awarded to the best in each class. Ahead of the 2023 competition there was further review of the Constitution, entry and judging criteria and a pilot in place to add a 'Tidy Towns' section - this has evolved to become 'Urban Communities'.
The Committee has run two sessions - one at Bilsborrow and one at Mellor Brook for village representatives to come and find out about the Competition, how it works and what changes have been made. The Representatives put interesting suggestions which we will take on board.

Lancashire’s tourism talent – the LTA22 award-winners
The stars of Lancashire tourism and hospitality shone brightly last night (Tuesday 7 February 2023) at the Lancashire Tourism Awards , held at the new Blackpool Conference and Exhibition Centre, supported by Headline Sponsor University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and Destination Sponsor Visit Blackpool.
Lancashire comedian Steve Royle was Guest Presenter and kept the audience entertained throughout, with the unique style and brilliant humour that saw him reach the finals of ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent. Having recently celebrated his 1000th appearance in panto, the 400-strong audience of tourism professionals, sponsors and supporters were guided masterfully and joyfully through 24 awards – Oh yes they were!
This year saw the addition of a brand new award, in association with Headline Sponsor UCLan , the award for Hospitality and Tourism Student of the Year. The winner of the award was Charlie Nicholls , a C&G L3 Diploma in Professional Cookery student at Blackpool and the Fylde College. There was strong competition for the award’s first year and the judges agreed that David Wetherill , a student on the Chef Diploma course at Runshaw College should also be commended, and he was presented with a special certificate on the night. Much to their delight, the students collected their accolades from celebrated Lancashire Chef and Taste Lancashire Ambassador, Paul Heathcote MBE .
This year’s Special Recognition Award , selected by the judges across all the finalists, was awarded to Crow Wood Hotel & Spa Resort by Marketing Lancashire’s Chair of the Board, Andrea Challis.
Earlier in the evening Andrea Challis proudly addressed the audience, for the first time as Chair of the Board of Marketing Lancashire saying “I am delighted to be here to celebrate with you all and to help the Marketing Lancashire team champion the very best of the county’s tourism and hospitality businesses. I am honestly in awe of the strength and diversity of our wonderful sector here in Lancashire.
“I have learnt through my involvement with Marketing Lancashire, and the other organisations and initiatives that I am a part of, that we have our own businesses, our own challenges and our own opportunities for growth but when we work together, we can, and we do, achieve so much more.”
Rachel McQueen, Chief Exe cutive of Marketing Lancashire followed Andrea’s speech with her review of the last year, a year that saw Lancashire ‘fighting back’ from the impact of Covid on the tourism and hospitality sector “Success in 2022 was hard fought, hard won, against, quite literally, all the odds. But successes there were, and significant ones too.”
On the finalists this year she said “What came through loud and clear from the judges and our mystery shoppers was the tremendous hard work, determination, entrepreneurship and vision demonstrated by our tourism businesses.
“There is absolutely no shortage of pride, passion and ambition in this room, and myself and the Marketing Lancashire team look forward to working with you to support the county’s tourism and hospitality sector to thrive.”
She also thanked the many supporters and sponsors of the awards including: B&D Print Services, Blackpool and the Fylde College, Creative Council, Creative Venue Stylist, Dewlay Cheesemakers, DFC, Harrison Drury Solicitors, Heckford, Insight 6, Lancashire Business View, Lancashire Life, Lancashire Post, Lancashire Telegraph, Lancaster University Management School, Links Signs and Graphics, Northern Print Distribution, the Pentland Centre for Sustainability in Business and Total Foodservice.

With no Joey Chestnut this year, here's who bettors think will take Nathan's Famous throne
With Joey Chestnut banned from the 2024 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, last year’s runner up Jeffery Esper becomes this year’s favorite, based on odds from international sportsbook BetUS.
Chestnut won’t be competing in this year’s Fourth of July competition because of his marketing deal with Impossible Foods that sells a rival hot dog brand made from plant-based meat.
So unlike previous years, the biggest question before the contest won’t be how more hotdogs Chestnut will eat, but who will take his throne. Esper is ranked No. 2 in the Major League Eating rankings .
Favorites to win Nathan's hot dog eating contest this year
Esper, who downed 49.5 hotdogs in 2023, may be this year’s favorite, but two other competitors – James Webb and Nick Wehry – could give Esper a run for the xxx belt, according to the odds at BetUS.
Chestnut consumed 62 hot dogs in last year's competition – his lowest hot dog total since 2015 – and still defeated Esper by about 15 hot dogs.
This Fourth of July won't be without Chestnut, though. The 16-time champion will be competing in a five-minute, hot-dog contest against soldiers at the Fort Bliss Army base in El Paso, Texas. The Coney Island competition lasts 10 minutes, but Chestnut says he hopes to out-eat the Nathan's winner in half the time.
How many hot dogs has Joey Chestnut eaten before?
Who will win the women's hot dog eating competition.
In the women's competition, Miki Sudo is the clear favorite to repeat. The moneyline on BetUS is tilted so much in her favor, you'd need to bet $3,000 just to win $100.
Since 2014, Sudo, the third-ranked eater in the world, has won nine of the last 10 Nathan's Famous competitions. She didn't compete in 2021 because she was pregnant with her son.
Sudo won in 2023 with 39.5 hot dogs. She holds the Nathan's Famous record of 48.5 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

At the core of Raymond Wang’s work lies a seemingly simple question: Can’t we just get along?
Wang, a fifth-year political science graduate student, is a native of Hong Kong who witnessed firsthand the shakeup and conflict engendered by China’s takeover of the former British colony. “That type of experience makes you wonder why things are so complicated,” he says. “Why is it so hard to live with your neighbors?”
Today, Wang is focused on ways of managing a rapidly intensifying U.S.-China competition, and more broadly, on identifying how China — and other emerging global powers — bend, break, or creatively accommodate international rules in trade, finance, maritime, and arms control matters to achieve their ends.
The current game for global dominance between the United States and China continually threatens to erupt into dangerous confrontation. Wang’s research aims to construct a more nuanced take on China’s behaviors in this game.
“U.S. policy towards China should be informed by a better understanding of China’s behaviors if we are to avoid the worst-case scenario,” Wang believes.
“Selective and smart”
One of Wang’s major research thrusts is the ongoing trade war between the two nations. “The U.S. views China as rewriting the rules, creating an alternative world order — and accuses China of violating World Trade Organization (WTO) rules,” says Wang. “But in fact, China has been very selective and smart about responding to these rules.”
One critical, and controversial, WTO matter involves determining whether state-owned enterprises are, in the arcane vocabulary of the group, “public bodies,” which are subject to sometimes punitive WTO rules. The United States asserts that if a government owns 51 percent of a company, it is a public body. This means that many essential Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs) — manufacturers of electric vehicles, steel, or chemicals, for example — would fall under WTO provisions, and potentially face punitive discipline.
But China isn’t the only nation with SOEs. Many European countries, including stalwart U.S. partners France and Norway, subsidize companies that qualify as public bodies according to the U.S. definition. They, too, could be subject to tough WTO regulations.
“This could harm a swathe of the E.U. economy,” says Wang. “So China intelligently made the case to the international community that the U.S. position is extreme, and has pushed for a more favorable interpretation through litigation at the WTO.”
For Wang, this example highlights a key insight of his research: “Rising powers such as China exhibit cautious opportunism,” he says. “China will try to work with the existing rules as much as possible, including bending them in creative ways.”
But when it comes down to it, Wang argues, China would rather avoid the costs of building something completely new.
“If you can repurpose an old tool, why would you buy a new one?” he asks. “The vast majority of actions China is taking involves reshaping the existing order, not introducing new rules or blowing up institutions and building new ones.”
Interviewing key players
To bolster his theory of “cautious opportunism,” Wang’s doctoral project sets out a suite of rule-shaping strategies adopted by rising powers in international organizations. His analysis is driven by case studies of disputes recently concluded, or ongoing, in the WTO, the World Bank, and other bodies responsible for defining and policing rules that govern all manner of international relations and commerce.
Gathering evidence for his argument, Wang has been interviewing people critical to the disputes on all sides.
“My approach is to figure out who was in the room when certain decisions were made and talk to every single person there,” he says. “For the WTO and World Bank, I’ve interviewed close to 50 relevant personnel, including front-line lawyers, senior leadership, and former government officials.” These interviews took place in Geneva, Singapore, Tokyo, and Washington.
But writing about disputes that involve China poses a unique set of problems. “It’s difficult to talk to actively serving Chinese officials, and in general, nobody wants to go on the record because all the content is sensitive.” As Wang moves on to cases in maritime governance, he will be reaching out to the key players involved in managing sensitive conflicts in the South China Sea, an Indo-Pacific region dotted with shoals and offering desirable fisheries as well as oil and gas resources.
Even here, Wang suggests, China may find reason to be cautious rather than opportunistic, preferring to carve out exemptions for itself or shift interpretations, rather than overturning the existing rules wholesale.
Indeed, Wang believes China and other rising powers introduce new rules only when conditions open up a window of opportunity: “It may be worth doing so when using traditional tools doesn’t get you what you want, if your competitors are unable or unwilling to counter mobilize against you, and you see that the costs of establishing these new rules are worth it,” he says.
Beyond Wang’s dissertation, he has also been part of a research team led by M. Taylor Fravel, Arthur and Ruth Sloan Professor of Political Science, that has published papers on China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
From friends to enemies
Wang left Hong Kong and its political ferment behind at age 15, but the challenge of dealing with a powerful neighbor and the potential crisis it represented stayed with him. In Italy, he attended a United World College — part of a network of schools bringing together young people from different nations and cultures for the purpose of training leaders and peacemakers.
“It’s a utopian idea, where you force teenagers from all around the world to live and study together and get along for two years,” says Wang. “There were people from countries in the Balkans that were actively at war with each other, who grew up with the memory of air raid sirens and family members who fought each other, but these kids would just hang out together.”
Coexistence was possible on the individual level, Wang realized, but he wondered, “What systemic thing happens that makes people do messed-up stuff to each other when they are in a group?”
With this question in mind, he went to the University of St. Andrews for his undergraduate and master’s degrees in international relations and modern history. As China continued its economic and military march onto the world stage, and Iran generated international tensions over its nuclear ambitions, Wang became interested in nuclear disarmament. He drilled down into the subject at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, where he earned a second master’s degree in nonproliferation and terrorism studies.
Leaning into a career revolving around policy, he applied to MIT’s security studies doctoral program, hoping to focus on the impact of emerging technologies on strategic nuclear stability. But events in the world led him to pivot. “When I started in the fall of 2019, the U.S.-China relationship was going off the rails with the trade war,” he says. “It was clear that managing the relationship would be one of the biggest foreign policy challenges for the foreseeable future, and I wanted to do research that would help ensure that the relationship wouldn’t tip into a nuclear war.”
Cooling tensions
Wang has no illusions about the difficulty of containing tensions between a superpower eager to assert its role in the world order, and one determined to hold onto its primacy. His goal is to make the competition more transparent, and if possible, less overtly threatening. He is preparing a paper, “Guns and Butter: Measuring Spillover and Implications for Technological Competition,” that outlines the different paths taken by the United States and China in developing defense-related technology that also benefits the civilian economy.
As he wades into the final phase of his thesis and contemplates his next steps, Wang hopes that his research insights might inform policymakers, especially in the United States, in their approach to China. While there is a fiercely competitive relationship, “there is still room for diplomacy,” he believes. “If you accept my theory that a rising power will try and use, or even abuse, existing rules as much as possible, then you need non-military — State Department — boots on the ground to monitor what is going on at all the international institutions,” he says. The more information and understanding the United States has of China’s behavior, the more likely it will be able “to cool down some of the tensions,” says Wang. “We need to develop a strategic empathy.”

Meta’s ‘pay or consent’ model fails EU competition rules, Commission finds
An investigation conducted by the European Commission has found that Meta’s “pay or consent” offer to Facebook and Instagram users in Europe does not comply with the bloc’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), according to preliminary findings reported by the regulator on Monday.
The Commission wrote in a press release that the binary choice Meta offers “forces users to consent to the combination of their personal data and fails to provide them a less personalised but equivalent version of Meta’s social networks.”
Failure to abide by the ex-ante market contestability regulation, which applied on Meta and other so called “gatekeepers” since March 7, could be extremely costly for the adtech giant. Penalties for confirmed breaches can reach up to 10% of global annual turnover, and even 20% for repeat offences.
More saliently, Meta could finally be forced to abandon a business model that demands users agree to surveillance advertising as the entry “price” for using its social networks.
The EU in March opened a formal DMA investigation into Meta’s “pay or consent” offer, following months of lobbying from privacy advocacy and consumer protection groups. The groups also argued that a subscription to not see ads does not comply with the bloc’s data protection or consumer protection rules either.
Back in March, the Commission said it was concerned Meta’s binary choice may not provide “a real alternative” for users who do not consent to its tracking. Meta was essentially asking users to either agree to being tracked so it could continue serving targeted advertising, or fork out almost €13 per month (per account) to access ad-free versions of the services.
The EU’s goal with the DMA is to level the playing field by targeting various advantages that gatekeepers can exploit using their dominance.
In Meta’s case, the Commission thinks the company’s dominant position in social networking lets it extract more data from users to profile them, which gives its ad business an unfair advantage versus its competitors. To reset the dynamic, the EC introduced a requirement in the DMA that gatekeepers must obtain people’s permission before they can be tracked for ads.
The regulator’s case against Meta contends the adtech giant is failing to provide people with a free and fair choice to deny tracking.
In a briefing with journalists ahead of the announcement, senior Commission officials emphasized that as long as Meta’s social networking services are free, the equivalent versions it offers to users who do not wish to consent to tracking must also be free.
The relevant DMA article here is Article 5(2), which requires gatekeepers to seek users’ consent for combining their personal data between designated core platform services (CPS) and other services. Facebook, Instagram and Meta’s ads business have been designated as CPS since September 2023 , so the company needs users’ permission to track and profile their activity and run “personalized” ads.
Users who refuse Meta’s tracking have the right to access a less-personalized but equivalent alternative, and the Commission’s preliminary view after around three months of investigations is that Meta is breaching this requirement, as a paid subscription is not a valid equivalent to free access.
The regulation also stipulates gatekeepers cannot make use of a service or certain functionalities conditional on users’ consent.
Meta spokesman Matthew Pollard responded to the EU’s findings by sending a statement attributed to a company spokesperson. Meta repeated a defense of the approach by citing an earlier EU court judgment, writing: “Subscription for no ads follows the direction of the highest court in Europe and complies with the DMA. We look forward to further constructive dialogue with the European Commission to bring this investigation to a close.”
When asked about this defense, senior Commission officials pointed out that the judgement Meta is referring to involved the Court of Justice caveating the suggestion that a paid version of a service may be offered as an alternative to tracking ads, saying that only “if necessary” could an “appropriate fee” be charged.
In the DMA context, the bloc’s enforcers say a gatekeeper would therefore have to argue why a fee is necessary. The EU pointed out that Meta could offer an alternative service with ads that do not rely on any personal data for targeting — such as contextual advertising.
Meta has never explained why it has not offered users a free, contextual ads option.
The EU looks to be on a road to forcing Meta to provide a non-binary, privacy-safe choice in the coming months.
“To ensure compliance with the DMA, users who do not consent should still get access to an equivalent service which uses less of their personal data, in this case for the personalisation of advertising,” the Commission noted in the press release.
Commission officials noted that Meta could still offer a subscription option, but any paid choice would need to be an additional offer (i.e. a third choice) on top of a free equivalent that does not demand users consent to being tracked.
The EU’s investigation isn’t over yet, and Meta will have a chance to respond formally to the preliminary findings. But there’s a limited window for things to play out here: The bloc has set itself a 12-month timeline to complete the probe, which suggests it needs to finish the job by or before March 2025.
BEUC, the European consumer organization, welcomed the preliminary findings, urging the EU to push through to speedy enforcement.
“It’s good news that the Commission is taking enforcement action based on the Digital Markets Act against Meta’s pay-or-consent model. It comes on top of the complaints against Meta’s model for breaches of consumer law and data protection law, which consumer organisations have raised in the last few months . We now urge Meta to comply with laws meant to protect consumers,” said Agustin Reyna, BEUC’s director general, in a statement.

Simone Biles leads Day 1 of the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials as injuries rock Team USA
MINNEAPOLIS — Simone Biles is four routines away from making her third Olympic team.
She led her Olympic and club teammate Jordan Chiles by 2.5 points after the first day of competition at the Olympic trials. Reigning Olympic all-around champion Suni Lee rounded out the top three.
The women’s gymnastics team competing in Paris will be named on Sunday , but the selection committee will have to go back to the drawing board after three front-runners were injured in the lead-up to Friday’s competition.
Kayla DiCello and Shilese Jones both suffered apparent injuries on the vault and were carried off by medical staff. After the meet, USA Gymnastics confirmed that DiCello ruptured her Achilles and will miss the rest of the trials.
"While this is not the result I envisioned, there’s so much to be proud of," DiCello said in an Instagram post. "Years of tireless work and dedication in the gym with the dream of representing my country once more at the Olympic Games. Pushing myself to go after new skills, new dreams."
She was an Olympic alternate for the women's team in Tokyo.
Jones, the reigning world all-around bronze medalist, was able to compete on the uneven bars, but limped off the podium and scratched the rest of the meet.
Her 14.675 on the event was the highest bars score of the night.
The status of Jones’ and DiCello’s Olympic dreams remains unknown. Skye Blakely , a 19-year-old Texas native, suffered a season-ending Achilles rupture during podium training Wednesday.
The selection procedures prohibit athletes from filing petitions to be named to the Olympic team in case of injury.
Biles started her night with a clean set on bars, but had a few wobbles on the balance beam. At the halfway point, it was an unusual sight on the leaderboard — Biles was not winning.
She was three-tenths behind Leanne Wong, who debuted a new vault upgrade, the Cheng. She originally received a 2-point deduction for a one-handed take off, but Wong appealed her score and eventually received a 14.450.
A dominant performance on floor carried Biles back to the familiar first-place standing. The crowd in the arena immediately took to their feet in the fourth rotation once she landed her eponymous vault, a Yurchenko double pike.
She earned a 15.975, the highest score of the night by over a point.
The skill is the most difficult, jaw-dropping piece of women’s gymnastics being done in the world right now. She did a second vault, the Cheng, to show the selection committee her prowess for the Olympic vault final, where two vaults are required.
Lee, the reigning Olympic all-around champion, looked Paris-ready as she hit an upgraded bars routine with enormous difficulty. She performed a Nabieva to a Bhardwaj, earning a 14.400. The selection committee will not want to leave that routine at home.
Stream every moment and every medal of the 2024 Paris Olympics on Peacock, starting with the Opening Ceremony July 26 at 12 p.m. ET.
The top all-around finisher after two days of competition at the trials will get an automatic spot on the five-member women’s Olympic team. The four other women competing in Paris will be determined by a selection committee, which will use the results from the trials and previous competitions to complete the team.
Four Olympic alternates will also be named in Minneapolis, two of whom will travel to Paris to train with the team.
The U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games air live on NBC and Peacock through Sunday.

FTC opens investigation into Teva, escalating patent fight with pharma industry
Democrats have accused drug companies of “junk patent listings,” arguing that the industry is blocking generic competition and inflating patients’ costs.
The Federal Trade Commission has opened an investigation into Teva Pharmaceuticals, citing the company’s refusal to take down about two dozen patents for its asthma and COPD inhalers, according to confidential agency documents reviewed by The Washington Post.
The FTC last week sent a civil investigative demand — effectively a subpoena — ordering Teva to provide internal communications, analysis and financial data related to the contested patents listed in a federal registry known as the Orange Book. The agency has argued that pharmaceutical companies such as Teva have wrongly made minor tweaks to their products to keep patents in the Orange Book and fend off generic competition. Teva charges hundreds of dollars for inhalers in the United States that the company sells for a fraction of the price overseas.
Teva has until July 24 to cooperate with the FTC’s demand.
A spokeswoman for the FTC declined to comment.
“Teva believes that its patents are properly listed in the Orange Book and continues to stand behind the company’s intellectual property,” Teva spokeswoman Kelley Dougherty said in an email.
The FTC’s investigation into Teva represents a significant escalation of Democrats’ months-long fight with the pharmaceutical industry , with lawmakers criticizing companies for making cosmetic changes to devices to extend patent protections. The agency in November 2023 called on Teva and nine other companies to voluntarily take down more than 100 patents, and in April expanded its targets to more than 300 “junk” patent listings.
Congressional Democrats also have pressured the companies to voluntarily withdraw the patents. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, and other lawmakers opened an investigation in January into the high price of inhalers. While three companies took down inhaler patents and pledged to lower the cost of their devices, Teva refused to do so.
President Biden in April touted Democrats’ efforts to crack down on “abusive patent listings” for inhalers and other products at a White House event with FTC Chair Lina Khan.
Drug companies “slightly changed the cap of an inhaler and they use the new patent on that cap to block generic drug companies from being able to enter the market,” Biden said. “Playing these games with patients and pricing, Big Pharma is able to charge Americans significantly higher prices and pad their profits.”
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) last month called again on Teva and seven other companies to take down their patents. Warren on Monday applauded the report that FTC had opened an investigation into Teva.
“If drug companies like Teva are manipulating patent law to jack up prices on lifesaving medication, they must be held accountable,” Warren said in a statement.
Drug companies have generally balked at the pressure campaign, arguing that Democrats are wrongly focusing on their patents and misrepresenting the Orange Book process.
“Our decision to maintain our patent listing comes following serious and thoughtful consideration of the FTC’s contentions and our concern for Teva’s strict compliance with law,” Brian Savage, Teva’s general counsel for global litigation, responded to Warren and Jayapal in a June 20 letter shared with The Washington Post. “At no time did Teva use these patent listings to raise prices or stifle competition by preventing cheaper generic drugs from entering the market.”
PhRMA, the drug industry’s largest lobbying group, last week launched a campaign to defend the industry’s intellectual property protections, which include patents.
“America leads the world in medical innovation because our unique ecosystem strikes the right balance between promoting innovation and affordability,” Robert Zirkelbach, PhRMA’s chief public affairs officer and head of strategic initiatives, wrote in a blog post. “We urge policymakers to preserve strong IP protections and the long-term benefits this system provides to patients and society.”
Teva also is facing a legal challenge from Amneal Pharmaceuticals, which has sought to make a generic version of one of Teva’s inhalers. New Jersey District Judge Stanley R. Chesler, a George W. Bush appointee, last month sided with Amneal and FTC and ordered Teva to either correct or take down five patents in the Orange Book.
Experts predicted that more pressure is coming for the pharmaceutical industry.
“The FTC has clearly set the table for legal action against pharmaceutical firms with improper patent listings,” said William Feldman, a Harvard physician and researcher who has testified to Congress about the patent issue.
Feldman suggested that FTC could bring lawsuits itself or help support cases brought by others. “We are still in the early innings of Orange Book reform,” he said.

Art competition to celebrate 60 wild years
The Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside will celebrate 60 years of conservation with an exhibition and competition of wildlife art.
The exhibition at the Brockholes Nature Reserve has five categories: Urban Wildlife, Wildlife on the Coast, Wildlife on Reserves, People in Wildlife and Wild Scenery .
Taking place on the weekend of September 10 and 11 (10.30am to 4pm both days), it will be the main event in the 60th celebration.
Organiser and Individual Giving Officer Vicki Lamb said: “For centuries, artists have used the natural world to hone their creativity to create wonderful breath taking art.
“Taking time out in nature helps us to relax, to restore and recharge. Painting, drawing, crafting is also another relaxing activity. Put those two things together and we find ourselves immersed in a state of wonder, clarity and clear focus, with creativity and imaginations running freely.”
Wildlife Trust has been the inspiration for many artists capturing the colours and life on our reserves.
And it will celebrate the history of the Trust which began as the Lancashire Naturalists’ Trust in the summer of 1962, a year later it had bought South Walney Island Nature – which transferred over to Cumbria with the boundary changes in 1974.
In 1980 the Trust bought the first part of Mere Sands Wood in Rufford and changed its name to Lancashire Trust for Nature Conservation. The name remained the same until 1992 when it was officially the Wildlife Trust of Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside.
Over the past 20 years the Trust has bought huge areas of peatland in Lancashire and Manchester and opened Brockholes in 2011.
Supporters and artists are invited to send in their artwork. Entries can be of any medium; paintings, drawings, 3D, and sculptures. Entry fee is £10 for one category.
All the work displayed will be publicly judged and winners will be featured in our Winter Lapwing members’ magazine. Please visit the shop at Brockholes to submit your entry.

We had the dahi papdi chaat and aloo tikki chat + kulfi The dahi papdi chaat and aloo tikki was amazing specifically the chole A must go place Will visit soon
Great food and wonderful service!! We ordered Samosa chaat and Punjabi stuffed kulcha. Punjabi stuffed kulcha is a must try, it was super soft and had super simple ingredients without a lot of spice and just melted in the mouth. Samosa chaat was great too! Crispy samosas and perfectly spicy chole. Loved their elaichi chai. It was super good! Highly recommend. What most BayArea chaat places lack is warm welcome from the owners. But the owner was so sweet and welcoming and was genuinely interested in knowing the feedback given that this is a relatively new place!
Punjabi stuffed kulcha
We visited this food truck today. We ordered Vadapav,Samosa Chat,Veg Sandwich and Masala Chai. The owners of the food truck were very kind, polite and served us with our order very quickly. Vadapav had an authentic Maharashtrian taste and was piping hot, fresh and very tasty. Samosa Chat was flavourful, samosas were very fresh and overall chat had a very good balanced taste.. Veg Sandwich was the highlight. Grilled perfectly,no oil, perfect taste. It is Auntji's speciality dish and was perfect. We ordered another Vada pav and then Masala Chai. I can say that it was one of the best tasting Masala Chai in entire Bay area. Very rich flavour and sweetness can be customized. Both the owners(Uncleji and Auntyji) prepare all the orders fresh and they also ensured that we liked all the food items. Really appreciate their hospitality. We will definitely go back to try some more food items and also recommend it to our friends.
Enjoyed the aloo tikki Chaat - it was crisp and fresh. The sandwiches were good too. Certainly recommend trying this out.
What an amazing place. Stumbled upon it by chance and it's an absolute gem for chaat items. The food truck is inside a gas station with plenty of parking and nearby EV charging. I loved their veg sandwich. It was warm, and filled with goodness of vegetables. Samosa chaat was excellent too. And the masala chai to top it off at the end was heaven. The food truck is run by a kind person who was polite and the service was friendly.
Veg sandwich
Best chai in Bay Area! The sandwiches are delicious too and you cannot miss on the Dahi papadi chat. Satish and his wife are humble and courteous. I recommend this place.
Tried the dahi puri randomly as I was in the area. Was so good I ate it before realizing I should have take a photo. The flavor of the yogurt and crisp puri was amazing due to whatever masala they added. Will be back!
1st of all, amazing response. Very few Indian food places in bay area actually cares of service. Uncle & Aunty are real great welcoming. Suggest their best if you need to lookout something new to try. Food was so so so delicious. Aunty cooks by herself and its really tasty. We tried chole- kulcha and shezwan vadapav. It was very good. Packaging well done as well. Service is fast. Apart from taste it was so fresh as well. Ambience is great. Right at the turn to go towards AMC Mercado so before or any after movie this is a place to go. Enough parking space right behind shopping complex. Try out, you will love it.
Chole kulcha.
Shezwan vadapav.
Randomly stopped by here for masala chai and I was pleasantly surprised at how authentic and good it was! We also tried the Veggie sandwich and the Dahi Batata Sev Puri and they were both freshly made and great! Will definitely be back to try the other items on the menu. Plus, Uncle is just super nice and welcoming!
We had them come in to cater our house warming event. They served with their heart. Every single guest was delighted with their food. High quality and fresh! Stuffed kulcha, samosa chat, vada pav, paneer sandwich, and masala chai stood out. I'm bringing Satish Kumar and his crew back for my daughter's birthday because of both the finger licking food and the warm service.
