I booked and paid in full my first Virgin cruise today and just realized when I looked at the booking that I forgot to add the insurance. The website says insurance can be purchased until the trip is paid in full.  Since I paid in full am I out of luck?

unfortunately, i think you are.

if you paid with a credit card that has trip coverage, you might actually be better off with that coverage vs. dealing with insurance anyway.  we were going to get the VV policy, then we realized our chase sapphire reserve trip interruption/cancellation coverage covered all the same stuff as the VV policy (if not more) without any extra fee.

You may still be okay with stand-alone travel insurance or an annual plan but check the terms to ensure trips already booked are covered.

If you are in the US, you can still get travel insurance but outside of Virgin. Just google travel insurance and you will find lots of options. That’s what we do. The  insurance this way is often times cheaper and better than what cruise lines offer.

But just to be clear, you can get travel insurance pretty much regardless of where you are from. You just need to get a policy that covers you based on your country of residence.

Thanks all!! I purchased cruise insurance online yesterday that includes cancel for any reason (75% of cruise cost). I feel so much better.  🥰

Awesome, and in general, independent (third party) travel insurance is usually better than what the cruise lines offer. You generally get better coverage for less money going with a third party. We get our insurance through our travel agent for each booking as insurance is a MUST for any cruise. Glad you got it worked out!

How to earn: Sea-Rovers earned status by sailing twice between Jan. 1, 2022, and Dec. 31, 2023.

Virgin Voyages cruises are more inclusive than those at many other cruise lines. The cruise cost includes traditional and speciality dining, juice, soda, Wi-Fi, gratuities and group fitness classes. You’ll still need to pay for alcohol that you drink.

Virgin Voyages doesn’t offer any all-inclusive drink packages. Instead, you have the option of purchasing a bar tab up to 24 hours before sailing or paying per drink on board. If you have Sailing Club elite status, you’ll be eligible for a $100 bar tab credit. Certain promotions also offer onboard credits with the purchase of a bar tab.

No, Virgin Voyages doesn't require any COVID test or vaccine to board.

Unlike many other cruise lines, Virgin Voyages is available exclusively to adults. This means that those under the age of 18 aren't able to board a Virgin Voyages ship.

Virgin Voyages has a few locations from where it sails. In the U.S., it takes off exclusively from its terminal in Miami.

For its Mediterranean cruises, departures are from Barcelona, Spain, or Athens, Greece.

Finally, for cruises in Oceania, cruises can start in Auckland, New Zealand, or Melbourne, Australia.

Note that Virgin Voyages repositions its ships each year, which means there will occasionally be some interesting itineraries as these ships cross oceans. These include sailings with stops in Dubai, Thailand, India, Singapore, Indonesia and more.

Virgin Voyages: Our Honest Review (Spoiler: It’s Awesome)

When I heard that Richard Branson had launched Virgin Voyages aiming to shake up the cruise industry, I was very hopeful. We have cruised before and were hoping his vision for cruising could eliminate some of the things we didn’t like.

Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady Review

So we got a good deal and booked a Virgin Voyages cruise out of Athens to visit Croatia, Montenegro, and Greece. And while we were on that cruise, we liked it so much that we booked a cruise out of Barcelona to visit France, Italy, and Spain. Now we have been on two completely different cruises and wanted to share our Virgin Voyages review.

This article is a comprehensive review of Virgin Voyages cruises, but in short, we love that Virgin Voyages has the most inclusive pricing and the fewest upcharges on board, and is adult-only.

Get an extra $100 Sailors Loot

When you book through our link or with one of our travel agents, you will receive $100 in Sailors Loot per cabin to use on board for these sailings through April 2024 .

Also available in August is  $500 off all Caribbean voyages through April 2024  or  $1000 off sailings from Barcelona and Piraeus (Athens)  — all with up to $600 in free drinks included so they can toast on every coast.

In this Virgin Voyager Cruise Review, we are going to be covering every aspect of their cruises that you need to know. We’ll talk about the destinations, the ships, onboard activities and amenities, dining, entertainment, pricing, and more.

Virgin Voyages Reviews & Awards

It appears we are not the only ones who love Virgin Voyages. Most recently, they won 2023’s Cruise Critic’s Best Overall Cruise Line and Cruise Critic Best Dining, Best Cabins, and Best Value-For-Money awards. This makes them the first cruise line to win all five Cruise Critics awards in a single year.

Virgin Voyages Review: Overview

As mentioned, Virgin Voyages launched in 2020 with only two ships in their fleet. While their beginning was small, the company’s determination to set itself apart from traditional cruise lines is catching momentum. Even with the pause in traveling due to the pandemic, Virgin Voyages now has 4 ships in their fleet, and it won’t be a surprise if they add more in the near future.

Why Virgin Voyages?

Almost all-inclusive.

With other cruise lines, your base price is only the start of what you are going to pay. With Virgin Cruises, your pricing includes tips, taxes, Wi-Fi, and all restaurants.

The only things you need to plan on paying for are some drinks and excursions.

We loved that the alcohol was affordable and we only paid for our spa treatments on board and excursions.

Sustainability Review

I felt some guilt going on a cruise knowing its negative environmental impact. The good news is through innovative and sustainable technologies, banning unnecessary single-use plastics, and thoughtfully sourcing food and retail merchandise, Virgin is working hard to have Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2050.

So even if a Virgin Voyages Cruise still has a negative environmental impact, it’s nice to know that by giving them our business we are supporting the innovation to get the industry cruising in the right direction.

Food Review

Virgin Voyages had chefs from Michelin-star restaurants create the food concepts and it was clear from our first meal. There are no buffets and no specialty restaurants that cost extra, in contrast to other cruise lines that are constantly trying to upsell you.

virgin voyage travel insurance

We made dinner reservations in the Virgin Voyages app in advance of the cruise and were able to make changes as we went, making additional reservations at the restaurants we loved and change times when needed. (More on the restaurants below.)

Adult Exclusive

This is not just an adult-focused cruise line; there are no kids allowed. The minimum age is 18. We personally like kids, but we loved that everything felt like it was made for us.

Adult Programming

With no kids allowed, the cruise entertainment, food, and amenities are all tailored to an adult audience. We noticed this in the health and wellness offerings as well, including group fitness classes and the different workout areas.

virgin voyage travel insurance

Each Virgin Voyages ship has a sleek design with a luxurious atmosphere. A majority of the cabins and suites offer guests balconies and ocean views. When on a Virgin Voyages ship, you will find a balance of relaxation and play with several pools, bars, workout areas, and restaurants.

  • Virgin Voyages Food Review

Let’s talk more about one of the most important parts of any vacation, the food!

So when I think of food on a cruise things have been hit or miss on other cruise lines.

We had a completely different experience on a Virgin Voyage.

There are over 20 dining options to choose from on Virgin Voyages ships created by Michelin-starred chefs. Some of the restaurants include steak and seafood, Italian, vegetarian, hibachi, Mexican, and even an experimental kitchen.

Another great feature is you can find a good selection of food around the clock! Most restaurants close at 10, but the burger bar goes till 11:30pm and there is a 24-hour dinner.

You can order as much food as you would like including multiple appetizers, entrees, and desserts.

The Wake Review

The Wake is a popular steak and seafood restaurant that serves breakfast, brunch, and dinner.

Make sure you grab reservations for both brunch and dinner at The Wake. We loved the Roasted Bone Marrow, New Zealand Lamb Chops, Brown Butter Roasted Wild Mushrooms, and asparagus for dinner and the eggs benedict.

virgin voyage travel insurance

Razzle Dazzle Review

For vegetarians, Razzle Dazzle is a great option as a majority of the menu excludes meat. Razzle Dazzle has a casual dining atmosphere with a unique menu for breakfast, brunch, and dinner.

This was our first dinner on board and we ended up coming back again for brunch and again for dinner. One benefit is the staff recognized us and were great each time.

virgin voyage travel insurance

For brunch, service starts with offering coffee, tea, juices, and a selection of pastries. The wild mushroom frittata was the best breakfast item of the trip for us. The chicken biscuit and watermelon appetizer and the probiotic hash were excellent.

We loved the braised lamb shank and the braised leak dish for dinner.

Make sure you ask for the secret menu!

Extra Virgin

You may have guessed by the name that Extra Virgin is an Italian restaurant. When dining at Extra Virgin, you will find classic Italian dishes such as meatballs, homemade pasta, cheese and meats, calamari, and unique Italian tapas.

Everything at Extra Virgin was delicious. Every time we visited we ordered a ton of food.

Our favorites included a cheese and charcuterie board, beef carpaccio, meatballs, calamari, fired artichoke, gnocchi, a NY Strip, and gelato affogato, which they prepared custom tableside. Honestly, one of the best Italian restaurants I have ever been to.

virgin voyage travel insurance

If you crave Mexican food while on a cruise, then head to Pink Agave. This is an intimate and luxurious Mexican restaurant that serves classic Mexican dishes such as enchiladas, tacos, guacamole, cochinita pibil (smoked pork), chorizo, and seafood.

We really liked the drink selection including spiked agua frescas. We both ordered passion fruit agua fresca, but one with vodka and one with tequila. The appetizers were great, especially the guacamole and the enchiladas. A lot of people recommended the steak with cheese, but I didn’t really get the hype. The steak was cooked perfectly, but why the cheese?

virgin voyage travel insurance

Test Kitchen

Tied for our favorite with Razzle Dazzle is the Test Kitchen, a laboratory-themed restaurant where Virgin Voyages chefs experiment with ingredients and make up new recipes. When we said Virgin Voyages is different than other cruise lines, this is what we meant.

virgin voyage travel insurance

There are two different menus that rotate throughout the cruise with 5 courses each, and you will have an opportunity to experience dishes that have never been served before. You can also try different vegetarian menus.

Similar to other Virgin Voyages reviews we have seen, some of the items are a little bit of a stretch with being too experimental, but with 5 courses we are still left full. We both enjoyed our main dish which was beef tenderloin or venison. They also offered a drink pairing that we passed on but was a good value we will take advantage of next time with 6 cocktails or wine pairings for $35.

If you are an extrovert or an introvert looking for a way to get out of your shell, then Gunbae is the place to be. This is a Korean bbq restaurant where guests from all over the world can sit together for dinner and a show.

The meal starts with a drinking game where you take a shot if you lose. I was the first one out!

virgin voyage travel insurance

We enjoyed a wide variety of appetizers, including noodle bowls, crispy chicken, and more. For the main course, you choose a selection of meats that are prepared on the grill by the server.

Know that you will be sitting with strangers for this meal at tables of 6.

The Gallery

While it’s not exactly a buffet, The Gallery is a place with multiple options with a lot of variety. The food hall has various dishes to choose from, including burgers, pasta, salads, sushi, desserts, and more.

There are both grab-and-go options that you can get yourself or items you order from a menu that your service will grab from you.

Things we would get on our own for breakfast included the bento boxes of fruit and yogurt and anything from the pastry and fruit section. I got in the habit of ordering my main dish from the menu and then grabbing chia pudding, extra fruit, and a pastry.

I also enjoyed coming here in the morning to grab a pastry and coffee.

For dinner, there is also a dessert bar we loved with really great pastries.

Lick me till Ice Cream

Enjoy unique flavors of homemade ice cream with unique flavored cones.

The Social Club

Here you can order hotdogs, wings, popcorn, and candy or for an extra cost, grab an adult milkshake.

Drinks on Virgin Voyages

Even though Virgin Voyages isn’t completely all-inclusive, guests still will have access to all essential drinks. The cruise line makes sure that all guests are hydrated and taken care of while soaking up the Caribbean sunshine.

There are no drink packages on Virgin Voyages . Instead, most non-alcoholic drinks are included and other drinks are reasonably priced.

The essential beverages include all-you-can-drink sodas, teas, coffees, and water. This is great for those who aren’t big alcohol drinkers as they don’t need to worry about purchasing a drinks package like on other cruise lines.

Virgin Voyages Alcohol Pricing

Virgin Voyages does not have an alcohol package as many cruise lines do. Instead, you have two choices; you can either pay for beers and cocktails as you go or purchase a $300 prepaid bar tab. If you choose to do the prepaid bar tab, then Virgin Voyages will give you a $50 bonus for premium drinks. You can also use your bar tab to buy other guests drinks if you choose to do so.

virgin voyage travel insurance

Virgin Voyages prides itself in not hiking up the prices of its alcoholic drinks as many cruise companies do. You will find beer for around $5-$6, basic cocktails for $9, and 42% of their wines by the glass are under $10. The other great part is that all of your tips are included in your fare, so don’t worry about having to carry around extra cash.

Just so you aren’t caught by surprise, not all coffees are included in your fare. Some specialty coffees are at an extra cost. The specialty coffees are still great, but it’s good to be aware that you will have to pay out of pocket for them if desired.

Nonetheless, there are numerous bars on Virgin Voyages ships, so no matter the time of the day, you will find somewhere to grab a drink. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular bars and lounges on the Lady Ships.

On The Rocks

Located in the center of the ship, On The Rocks serves every drink under the sun. Guests can enjoy trivia, late-night bands, and other late-night entertainment daily.

Dock House & The Dock

virgin voyage travel insurance

At the rear of the ship, you will find the Dock House and the Dock. Similar to a beach club, you can enjoy loungers, Thai beds, and seating areas with umbrellas. The Dock House has both indoor and outdoor seating, depending on what you are feeling.

When sitting outside, you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the bar service. If you want to go inside, then you will find a full-service bar that serves cocktails, small bites, and evening music.

This is one of our favorite venues. After a busy day in port, we would come here, order a drink, and lounge for a while. They also serve some great tapas for an afternoon snack, perfect for when you first get on the ship on embarcation day.

Sip Champagne Bar

This elegant bar is a perfect place to grab a cocktail before going to dinner. Since it is a quiet and relaxing area, guests can also come here to wind down or catch up on work if necessary.

Richard’s Rooftop

If you booked a suite, you can enjoy the luxury of Richard’s Rooftop. The outdoor space has a mixture of rooftop parties and pre-dinner cocktail areas.

The Manor is a nightclub with a London vibe. Guests can listen to DJs, drink cocktails, and dance the night away.

In addition to these main bars and lounges, there are several others throughout the Lady Ships. These include the Aquatic Club pool bar, Social Club, and Loose Canon Pub.

Virgin Voyages Ships

Currently, Virgin Voyages has four ships : the Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, Resilient Lady, and the newest Brilliant Lady. You will find that all four ships are very similar, with sleek exterior designs and luxurious interiors. Each ship accommodates around 2,700 passengers with spacious cabins and high-end suites.

The ships are designed to celebrate the ocean, provide a yachting experience to the masses, and bring back the glam experience of sailing combined with the luxe experience of a boutique hotel.

Virgin Voyages Cabins

Virgin Voyager cabins have a modern design with fresh and trendy decor. The cabins are spacious, with a lot of them having private balconies. However, one complaint about the cabins is that the bathrooms are smaller than other cruise lines.

virgin voyage travel insurance

Nonetheless, one thing that sets Virgin Voyager cabins apart is the technology. When opening the cabin door, the curtains will open, and the lighting will turn on. Guests can use an in-room tablet to control the shades, television, movies, and room lighting, and request room service.

One cool feature of the rooms is the convertible sofa beds. In each room, the queen size bed converts into a sofa giving guests plenty of space to relax or watch a movie. It’s unclear if you can do the bed conversion yourself or not.

virgin voyage travel insurance

It’s likely you can, but you will be doing your own bedding changes each day. Instead, you can request an attendant to do it and will convert the sofa back to the bed in the evening.

If your cabin or suite does have a balcony, you will be greeted with a hammock. Relaxing in a hammock while cruising the sea is a great way to end your day. The balconies also have a table and chairs if you and your loved one want to have a cocktail in private.

Since there is a converting sofa bed in the rooms, you can’t put your bags under the bed. However, the closets are big enough to fit your bags for a 14-day voyage.

Lastly, there isn’t a minibar in the standard cabins, but you are given water bottles daily. For those in suites, you will get some complimentary beverages each day.

Virgin Voyages Suites

The Rockstar and Mega Rockstar suites are the most luxurious and expensive suites on the Lady Ships. For those wanting to go all out, the Mega Rockstar Suite is the way to go. These suites range from 570 square feet to 2000 square feet. They include whirlpools, outdoor jacuzzis, and private terraces.

virgin voyage travel insurance

Guests in the Mega Rockstar suites will get a record table, a bottomless mini bar, a high-limit bar tab, premium WiFi, and priority check-in. In addition, hotel and airport transfers are included in your fare.

The Rockstar suites aren’t as fancy as the Mega Rockstar suites, but they are still pretty amazing. These suites range from 400 to 850 square feet, depending on the room. You still get priority boarding, access to Richard’s Rooftop, and a private concierge. However, the minibar isn’t unlimited and is good for single use.

Expect to pay $850 to $1,200 a night for the Rockstar suite and $1,400-$2,000 for the Mega Rockstar suites. If you are going to live like a rockstar, then you should expect to pay for the experience.

Even though Virgin Voyager only has a four-ship fleet, there is a wide range of routes to choose from. Most of the cruise itineraries depart from Miami and explore destinations in the Bahamas and the Caribbean. On a seasonal basis, there are Mediterranean itineraries with one of their Lady Ships. However, guests can now make bookings for cruises in Australia and New Zealand that will depart in late 2023.

Your itinerary will affect the vibe on your cruise. Itineraries with Ibiza or the Bimini Beach Club, the cruise is are going to have more of a party vibe.

Also, the shorter the cruise, the more it will feel like a party vibe.

Caribbean Routes

virgin voyage travel insurance

As mentioned, every cruise in the Caribbean departs from Miami for now. In the next couple of years, it is rumored they will offer cruise departures from Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands.

As for the itineraries, they range from four to eight nights and include ports like Nassau, St. Thomas, San Juan, Costa Maya, Mexico, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic , Turks & Caicos, and more.

Mediterranean Routes

Currently, travelers can book 7-night stays departing from Barcelona, Spain, and Athens, Greece. However, some ports will have longer stays and overnight itineraries depending on your needs.

The Mediterranean routes make stops in other European countries such as France, Italy, Corsica, Ibiza, Turkey, Greece, and more. Similar to the Caribbean routes, if you are looking for exciting late-night experiences, this is the cruise for you.

Australia & New Zealand Routes

Travelers down under can choose from 12 different itineraries ranging from 5 to 14 nights. Most of the cruises will leave out of Melbourne, Australia, or Auckland, New Zealand, with some being round trip while others are one-way. The ships will make stops at multiple ports in both countries, giving you the opportunity to explore the best places.

There will also be a few itineraries that include stops in Singapore and Bali which are worth considering. We expect this is only the beginning of many new voyages to come in the South Pacific.

Virgin Voyages Cancellation Policy

No matter if it’s a flight, an all-inclusive resort in Cancun, or a cruise, you should know the terms of the cancellation policy. If you are booking 120 days or more prior to your departure date, you have a 7-day grace period to receive a full refund, including your deposit amount.

However, if it’s past the grace period but you are still outside of the 120-day mark, you will not get the deposit refunded. For cancellations between 119 days and 45 days, you have some options.

The first option is to get a “Future Voyage Credit” that can be applied to another cruise trip up to 1 year after the original departure date. The second option is to give the trip to someone and change the names on the reservation. Lastly, you can make a travel insurance claim if you purchased coverage.

At the 44-mark from departure, all payments are final, and you won’t receive any refund. However, depending on the reason for the cancellation, you can file a travel insurance claim. In these circumstances, claims will need to be made directly to the travel insurance company and not to Virgin Voyages .

Virgin Voyages Casino Review

If you want to test your luck, you can go to a casino on any Virgin Voyages ship. While the casinos are a tad smaller than other ships in the industry, there are still plenty of slot machines and table games to choose from. Some of the games include blackjack, craps, poker, slots, keno, baccarat, and more.

virgin voyage travel insurance

The casinos are open at all hours, so don’t worry about missing out on the action. Travelers can also join tournaments and special events for chances to win cash prizes. If you need a break from playing, then you can hang out at the bar while your friends and family keep playing.

Keep in mind that smoking is prohibited in the gaming area. There are designated smoking areas, and Virgin Voyages has the right to refuse service to anyone found in violation. Also if you seem too intoxicated, they can deny you entry into the casino.

If you are interested in poker, there are digital poker tables and there are poker tournament cruises as well.

Virgin Voyages Excursion Reviews

There is a lot of fun to be had while aboard a Virgin Voyages ship, but the fun doesn’t stop there. When stopping at the assigned ports, you can choose from a wide range of excursions. And by a wide range, we mean activities suitable for any type of traveler.

For active outdoorsmen, you can hike Mount Liamuiga Volcano in Basseterre, Saint Kitts. For a relaxing adventure, take a boat ride through the famous Bacalar Lagoon in Costa Maya, Mexico. For a romantic getaway, go to a winery in Santorini, Greece.

To put it in perspective, Virgin Voyages sails in the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Australia, and New Zealand. Within each region, there are several ports of call for your enjoyment. From there, you can choose from dozens of excursions that are categorized as relaxing, energetic, or cultured. No matter what you like, there is something for everyone.

One unique feature of Virgin Voyages is the list of Richard’s Favs which are hand-selected by Richard Branson.

Virgin Voyages Activity Reviews

Even though Virgin Voyages has the appearance of a party ship, it has a lot of activities that don’t include DJs and pool parties. Of course, if you are into nightclubs and pool parties, you won’t have to look far, as there is plenty of that on board.

But aside from the vibrant nightlife, Virgin Voyages offers other activities such as trivia, food classes, bingo, workout classes, and other games. Then, of course, there is the casino, as we discussed earlier, but that costs money to play, whereas the others don’t.

Let’s not forget the shows and nighttime entertainment. Each Lady Ship has its own curated schedule of nighttime shows, including drag shows, game shows, live music, and comedy shows.

For example, the “It’s a Ship Show” is a dinner and a show that includes comedy, music, and performances. The food is included in the show, so you can snack while enjoying the show. Another show is Duel Reality which is a theater dance performance. However, once you go to this show and sit down, you can not leave for any reason until the show is over.

You will find that the shows on Virgin Voyages can be a little weird, but that’s the way they like it. They are proud to be eccentric and different from other cruise lines, and that is one of the main appeals of going aboard a Virgin Voyages ship. So, keep an open mind and enjoy the ride!

Virgin Voyages Amenities

When you aren’t watching a show, dining at a restaurant, or sleeping (if you sleep), there are plenty of amenities to keep you occupied. Virgin Voyages offers a variety of pools, jacuzzis, spa treatments, and gym facilities.

The workout facilities on Virgin Voyages are impressive. All of the cardio equipment is compatible with Apple Watch and the “my wellness” app. The weight lifting is separate from the cardio space and is equally impressive. You will find that some cruise lines and even resorts have limited workout areas, but not Virgin Voyages.

Ships also have professional fitness instructors that offer workout classes. For example, you can join spin, bungee, HIIT, or yoga classes. If you have never done one of these before, this is a good opportunity as it’s included in your fare.

The Redemption Spa is available to guests, but not all services are included in your fare. For example, you have to pay extra to get a massage which can be disappointing to some. However, there are typically saunas, steam rooms, mud rooms, whirlpool tubs, and heated laying areas.

virgin voyage travel insurance

Keep in mind that you can only block off 3 hours at a time when booking a reservation. The other downfall is that you have to be there for the full three hours. If you don’t, you can’t reenter and have to book a new reservation for another day.

The Pool Decks

The pool decks, also known as the “Aquatic Club,” are for those looking to relax and get a tan. There are only two pools; one is large and surrounded by lounge chairs, while the other is small and at the rear of the ship.

virgin voyage travel insurance

You will find that the larger pool has more of a club vibe where music plays all day. If you want a more relaxing or intimate vibe, then the smaller pool may be more your style.

Virgin Voyages Splash of Romance Package

Only available on the Scarlet Lady ship, guests can register for the Splash of Romance package. This package has an introductory rate of $200 and offers a luxurious experience with added perks.

Honeymooners or romantic couples will enjoy priority boarding, daily cold-pressed juices, exclusive sail-away hour, and sultry bites. In addition, you will get a two 3-hour thermal spa pass.

If you are wanting some bubbly to celebrate, then take advance of the “Shake for Champagne Service” via the Virgin Voyages app. When using this service, shake your phone, and you will have a bottle of champagne on ice delivered to you no matter where you are within minutes.

The Splash of Romance package is available in any region that the Scarlet Lady vessel sails to. To book, fill out the form, and within 72 hours, you will have a booking confirmation. From there, you will have 24 hours to pay a deposit and confirm your reservation.

Is Virgin Voyages All-Inclusive?

Virgin Voyages is all-inclusive to a point. All of your onboard food, activities, refreshments, and entertainment are included with your fare. However, on-shore activities, alcoholic beverages, and select spa services are not.

Are Virgin Cruises Adults Only?

Yes, Virgin Voyages cruises are for adults only, and you must be 18 years or older to board the ship. It’s a perfect cruise for solo travelers, couples, families, and friends. However, if you want to take your kids on a trip, you might want to look into Royal Caribbean or Disney cruises .

Virgin Voyages: Wrapping Up

There you have it, the complete guide to Virgin Voyages! It’s fair to say that these cruises are different than other ones, offering luxurious but unique experiences. There is a reason why Virgin Voyages has won several rewards recently, so why not give it a go?

We worked with Mike to plan our perfect honeymoon in Greece — he was amazing the whole way through and put together a trip we will cherish for our lifetime.

He was thoughtful with our suggestions, and provided some of his own without every pushing us. He stayed within our budgetary means but made it feel like we had a budget twice the size.

Virgin Voyages Travel Insurance - 2024 Review

Virgin voyages travel insurance - review.

Virgin Voyages Travel Insurance - Review

  • Strong Insurance Partner
  • Easy To Buy At Check Out
  • Poor Medical And Evacuation Cover
  • Few Cancellation / Interruption Reasons

Sharing is caring!

Virgin Voyages offers cruises to adults aged 18 and up (no children allowed) that feature high tech amenities, low environmental impact, and complimentary drinks and dining. Although Virgin Voyages offers a variety of cruises, cabin types, and dining options, they only offer a single option for travel insurance, which is their Voyage Protection plan.

Picture1

Arch Insurance Company, a strong insurance partner, underwrites Virgin’s Voyage Protection plan, while Aon Affinity administers policy service and handles claims.

Like most major cruise lines, the Voyage Protection plan carries dangerously low limits for Medical Insurance and Medical Evacuation. It also lacks many of the important features of quality travel insurance policies found on the wider market, such as a Pre-Existing Medical Condition Waiver and a comprehensive list of reasons for Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption.

The one redeeming element of Virgin Voyages’ travel insurance is that you can easily purchase it at checkout when booking your cruise online. Before you buy, check out this review to find out if the Voyage Protection plan is right for you.

Our Cruise: French Daze & Ibiza Nights

Itinerary

For our review, we selected the French Daze & Ibiza Nights cruise. Our sample couple, ages 55 and 60, will be staying in The Insider suite, sailing from 5/22/22-5/29/22. The cruise begins and ends in Barcelona, with stops in Marseille, Cannes, Olbia, and Ibiza along the way. The total cost of the cruise comes to $2,600 after taxes and fees.

Cruise2

Conveniently, Virgin Voyages offers the option to purchase travel insurance at checkout.

Voyage Protection2

To Virgin Voyages’ credit, their website is incredibly user friendly and easy to navigate. And obviously, it’s a simple click of “Yes” or “No” to purchase their travel insurance plan. But before you add it into your shopping cart, you need to know what your $192 is really buying - and what it’s not.

Virgin’s insurance provides travelers with $10k of medical coverage and $25k of medical evacuation coverage. Let’s see how this compares to other travel insurance in the wider travel insurance marketplace.

Comparison Quotes

When we review cruise line travel insurance plans, we always compare them to other options available on the wider travel insurance marketplace. This way, you can see what the cruise line offers, and determine whether it fits your needs or is a good value for your money.

We recommend all travelers leaving the US have ample emergency insurance in case of an overseas catastrophe. This saves you the headache and heartache of paying for medical treatment out of pocket, and a 6-figure transportation fee to return home in a worst-case scenario.

Therefore,  Cruise Insurance 101  advocates carrying a  minimum of $100k Medical Insurance, $250k Emergency Medical Evacuation, and a Waiver of Pre-Existing Medical Conditions whenever possible . This is the primary benchmark we use to determine if a cruise line’s travel insurance is suitable for travelers.

Using the details of the trip, we ran a sample quote to show you how Virgin Voyages’ travel insurance plan compares with two policies available at Cruise Insurance 101 .

Trawick First Class

First, we’ll compare it to Trawick First Class for $161.19, because this is the least expensive comprehensive trip insurance plan that includes our recommended minimums for Medical Insurance, Medical Evacuation and Pre-Existing Condition Waiver.

JH Silver CFAR

Then, we’ll compare it to the least expensive plan that meets our minimum recommendations, includes a Pre-Existing Condition Waiver, and also offers Cancel For Any Reason benefits, which happens to be the John Hancock Silver (CFAR 75%) for $262.50.

How Does Virgin Voyages Compare to the Competition?

As you can see, the Voyage Protection plan offers extremely limited coverage for the $192 cost. Like many cruise line travel insurance plans, the Medical Insurance and Medical Evacuation coverage have disappointingly low limits. Furthermore, the policy does not cover Pre-Existing Conditions nor provide a Cancel For Any Reason option.

In comparison, Trawick First Class costs $30.81 less than the Voyage Protection plan on our sample quote. While this is not a significant savings, Trawick First Class provides adequate coverage for travel outside of the US, with $150k in Medical Insurance and $1m in Medical Evacuation coverage. It also covers Pre-Existing Conditions if purchased within 14 days of your initial payment or deposit towards the trip.

Our sample couple could have Cancel For Any Reason protection by purchasing the John Hancock Silver (CFAR 75%) for $70.50 more than the Voyage Protection plan. In addition to the standard cancellation coverage, our two travelers would have the option to cancel their trip for any reason and still receive a significant portion of their trip cost back. They’d also be properly protected with $100k of Medical Insurance and $500k in Medical Evacuation coverage.

We’ll discuss the importance of these coverages further below.

Trip Cancellation Reimburses You If You Can’t Travel

Travelers value  Trip Cancellation  benefits because the coverage allows you to get a full reimbursement of your pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs in the event you must cancel your trip for a covered reason. Of course, the more covered reasons a policy has for cancellation, the better.

Disappointingly, Virgin’s cruise insurance covers a mere 6 cancellation reasons:

  • Your, a Family Member’s, a Traveling Companion’s, or a Traveling Companion’s Family Member’s death, that occurs before departure on Your Trip; or
  • Your, a Family Member’s, a Traveling Companion’s or a Traveling Companion’s Family Member’s covered Sickness or Injury, that: a) occurs before departure on Your Trip; b) requires Medical Treatment at the time of cancellation; and c) as certified by a Physician, results in medical restrictions so disabling as to cause Your Trip to be cancelled;
  • You or Your Traveling Companion being hijacked, quarantined, required to serve on a jury (notice of jury duty must be received after Your Effective Date), served with a court order to appear as a witness in a legal action in which You or Your Traveling Companion is not a party (except law enforcement officers);
  • Your or Your Traveling Companion’s primary place of residence is made Uninhabitable and remains Uninhabitable during Your scheduled Trip, by fire, flood, or other Natural Disaster, vandalism;
  • You or Your Traveling Companion being directly involved in a traffic accident, substantiated by a police report, while en route to Your scheduled point of departure;
  • You or Your Traveling Companion who are military, police or fire personnel being called into emergency service to provide aid or relief for a Natural Disaster.

While covered cancellation can vary by policy, most policies cover all the above reasons and more, including but not limited to:

  • A documented theft of passports or visas
  • Permanent transfer of employment of 250 miles or more
  • Involuntary termination or layoff
  • An unannounced strike causing a complete cessation of services
  • Inclement weather causing a complete cessation of services
  • Revocation of previously granted military leave due to war
  • Bankruptcy or default of airline, cruise line, tour operator

By comparison, both Trawick First Class and John Hancock Silver (CFAR 75%) offer 14 covered cancellation scenarios. The John Hancock Silver (CFAR 75%) also includes Cancel For Any Reason, which allows you to cancel for any reason not otherwise covered by the policy and still receive a 75% reimbursement of your trip cost.

Another important factor to consider is that the Voyage Protection plan only covers travel arrangements booked through Virgin Voyages. Any travel arrangements booked elsewhere, such as independently booked airfare and accommodations for travel time ahead of or after the cruise, would not be covered. This is typical of cruise line travel insurance plans but leaves you at risk of losing those costs if you cancel your trip.

Alternatively, third-party travel insurance plans, like Trawick First Class and John Hancock Silver (CFAR 75%), insure all of your pre-paid and non-refundable trip costs, regardless of who your travel arrangements were booked through.

Barcelona

Cancel For Any Reason

Cancel For Any Reason coverage is exactly what it sounds like – it allows you to cancel for any reason that’s not covered under the policy and still receive a reimbursement of your trip cost.

Many major cruise lines offer Cancel For Any Reason , which assigns a future cruise credit to the travelers if they cancel their cruise for any reason not listed on the policy. Surprisingly, Virgin Voyages doesn’t offer anything of the sort. While a future cruise credit is far from preferable, it’s better than nothing.

On the other hand, some third-party travel insurance plans, like John Hancock Silver (CFAR 75%) have Cancel For Any Reason benefits built into the policy. Instead of offering future credit, the policy gives you a cash reimbursement for a portion of the trip cost.

However, Cancel For Any Reason has a few rules. The coverage reimburses 50% -75% (depending on policy) of your pre-paid and non-refundable trip costs, provided you:

  • Purchase the policy within 10-21 days (depending on the policy) of your initial payment or deposit towards the trip. For the John Hancock Silver (CFAR 75%), this timeframe, called the Time Sensitive Period, is 14 days.
  • Insure 100% of your pre-paid and non-refundable trip costs, and add any subsequent payments to the policy’s trip cost within the Time Sensitive Period
  • Cancel your trip no later than 48 hours prior to departure

Trip Interruption Refunds the Unused Portion of Trip

Similar to Trip Cancellation,  Trip Interruption reimburses you for the missed portion of your trip if you have a covered disruption. Covered reasons for Trip Interruption mimic those of Trip Cancellation. For example, if you unexpectedly fell ill during your cruise and had to seek treatment off the ship for two days, that’s a covered Trip Interruption (along with a Medical Insurance claim).

In some cases, your Trip Interruption may allow you to return to the trip after missing a portion of it. Other times, you might have to go home early to tend to a family emergency. In the same fashion, a Trip Interruption could delay your arrival to the cruise.

In any event, travel insurance reimburses you up to your trip cost for the unused, pre-paid, non-refundable expenses for your travel arrangements, plus the additional transportation cost paid to either:

  • Join your trip if you must depart after your scheduled departure date or travel via alternate route of travel; or
  • Rejoin your trip from the point where your trip was interrupted or return home early

While Virgin’s barebones policy offers only 100% trip cost refund for a covered interruption, both Trawick First Class and John Hancock Silver (CFAR 75%) cover up to a 150% refund. The extra 50% helps cover the added cost of transportation.

Trip Interruption coverage that exceeds 100% is a hallmark of a robust and comprehensive travel insurance policy.

Spain

Medical Insurance When Traveling Overseas

Sometimes travelers are more focused on Trip Cancellation and overlook the risks of traveling overseas without proper  Medical Insurance .

American travelers often have the false impression that countries with socialized medicine will treat them for free, but this is not the case. In fact, countries with universal health care programs only offer those services to their residents, who pay taxes for this privilege, whereas travelers must pay full price for health care. Inpatient care at a hospital can run $3,000 to $4,000 per night, plus treatments and surgeries.

Also, Medicare does not pay for your treatment outside the US. In addition, many private healthcare plans only reimburse for emergencies. For example, although some Medicare supplements cover up to $50k of emergency treatment abroad, it’s a lifetime limit and you must pay a 20% co-pay out of pocket. These policies falsely lead you to believe you’re safely covered, but they leave your retirement savings exposed to the risk of a sudden, catastrophic financial loss.

Furthermore, the US State Department does not provide any medical support to Americans traveling overseas, which is why carrying adequate Medical Insurance is critical when leaving the country.

Thus Cruise Insurance 101 recommends each traveler carry at least $100k in Medical Insurance when leaving the US. This is enough coverage to assure you’re properly treated without paying off medical bills for years to come.

Getting back to Virgin Voyages’ travel insurance, the Voyage Protection plan includes only $10k of Medical Insurance. That’s simply not going to help you in an emergency.

On the other hand, Trawick First Class includes $150k Medical Insurance and John Hancock Silver (CFAR 75%) covers $100k. These levels of coverage are much better suited for  seniors cruising  outside of the US.

Emergency Medical Evacuation Brings You Home

Have you ever seen a helicopter land on a cruise ship to pick up a sick passenger, or heard of someone being flown home in a private medical jet? These things happen more frequently than you think.

Specifically, Medical Evacuation  coverage pays for transportation from the place of injury or illness to a local hospital. Once you’re stable and the physician treating you determines it’s necessary, Medical Evacuation returns you home. If your condition is critical and you require ongoing care by a medical team to return home, an air ambulance outfitted as a flying ICU might be most appropriate.

Private air transportation such as this can cost $15k to $25k per flight hour and coming back to the US from overseas can get very expensive, very quickly.

In addition, many travelers assume their private health insurance pays for Medical Evacuation so they can get home. In fact, private health insurance plans, including Medicare supplements, do not include Medical Evacuation benefits beyond a limited amount for a ground ambulance to the hospital. So, that medical flight cost comes out of your pocket and could cost as much as a house.

For these reasons Cruise Insurance 101 recommends all travelers leaving the US carry a minimum of $250k Emergency Medical Evacuation coverage. Travelers venturing even further from home, to destinations such as Africa, Asia, or beyond, should carry a minimum of $500k.

Virgin’s Voyage Protection plan only provides a minimal $25k Medical Evacuation benefit. Meanwhile, Trawick First Class has a benefit of $1m per person for Medical Evacuation and the John Hancock Silver (CFAR 75%) covers $500k per person.

Picture2

Pre-Existing Medical Conditions

Pre-Existing Conditions are an understandable concern for many senior travelers.

In the world of travel insurance, a Pre-Existing Condition does not mean anything that’s ever happened to you in your entire medical history. Instead, travel insurance companies only concern themselves with your more recent medical history.

Most policies are only concerned about the 60-180 days prior to the day you purchased your policy. This means any conditions older than 60-180 days will be covered if none of the following has occurred within that timeframe:

  • New conditions or change or worsening of previous conditions
  • Treatment, testing, or examinations that have occurred or been recommended
  • New or changes in medication, including dosage changes

If any of the above did occur during to 60-180-day window prior to purchasing travel insurance, it would be excluded from coverage.

Luckily, if you purchase your policy early in the booking process, within 14-21 days of making your initial payment or deposit towards your trip, many travel insurance policies include coverage for Pre-Existing Conditions with a Waiver. Once those 14-21 days pass, however, Pre-Existing Conditions aren’t covered. Instead, they’re subject to the Look Back period, the time between when you bought the policy and the 60-180 days prior.

To make life easier and give you peace of mind Cruise Insurance 101 recommends travelers buy travel insurance that includes a Pre-Existing Condition Waiver whenever possible. It’s simple to get, just by purchasing your travel insurance policy shortly after making a deposit. The Voyage Protection plan does not cover Pre-Existing Conditions at all. They do not offer a waiver, so regardless of when you buy their insurance, they won’t cover it. One good thing in Virgin Voyages’ favor is that their policy only looks back 60 days into your medical history, rather than 90 or 180 days.

Alternatively, both policies we compared from Cruise Insurance 101 to Virgin’s Voyage Protection plan offer a Waiver of Pre-Existing Conditions, if the policies are purchased within 14 days of your initial payment or deposit.

Picture3

Virgin Voyages offers contemporary cruising experiences, but minimal travel insurance. Their policy is deficient in critical areas such as Trip Cancellation, Medical Insurance, Medical Evacuation and covering Pre-existing Conditions. It also lacks a Cancel For Any Reason option. Overall we rate it a 7 out of 10.

Trawick First Class is one of many  Cruise Insurance 101  policies that provides outstanding value for the money, with a savings of $30.81 over the Voyage Protection plan, for exponentially better coverage.

While a higher tiered plan like John Hancock Silver (CFAR 75%) costs $70.50 more than the Voyage Protection plan, it offers many of the features and flexibility anyone would want in a travel insurance policy and is a better value for your money.

In addition, you cannot insure your other travel arrangements with Virgin Voyages’ policy, but you can insure them under a policy purchased in the wider travel insurance marketplace. You’ll find more value for your money working with Cruise Insurance 101 .

Did you know you won’t find lower prices on the same policy anywhere else, not even with the insurance company directly? At Cruise Insurance 101 , we take the nation’s top travel insurance carriers and bring them in our marketplace where you can shop and compare different plans.

Visit Cruise Insurance 101 first to see your options before committing to the first travel insurance policy you’re offered. Stop by and have a chat,  send an email  or give us a call at +1(786) 751-2984 . Safe travels!

Christianna was very professional and friendly in answering my remaining questions after reading through the policy I had chosen. I chose an IMG plan with the Aardy Logo because Aardy worked with IMG to select the limits of insurance to match their recommendations when traveling internationally and opted to keep benefits within the policy they have learned travelers are typically looking for. It is only available on Aardy and Aardy-powered sites. I have reviewed so many travel insurance plans and found this one gave the coverage I was looking for at the best price.

What Is Cruise Travel Insurance?

Cruise insurance is a type of travel insurance that covers expenses like airfare and accommodations, as well as emergency medical situations. The amount of coverage included in your plan will depend on the insurance company you select and the plan tier you choose.

Some insurance coverage includes cancel-for-any-reason, allowing you to recoup costs if you can’t go on the trip for any reason.

What Does Travel Insurance for Cruises Cover?

Travel insurance offers a variety of coverage options. Look at some coverages you might encounter as you shop for the best policy to protect your trip.

Trip Delays

Cruises involve many transfers and experiences. One small airfare delay could mean you miss the boat, and getting to the next port to board is expensive and complex. Your travel insurance can reimburse you for trip delays.

Trip Interruptions

Once you leave for your cruise, various circumstances could send you home, cutting your trip short. In case of an emergency, insurance can help pay the difference between your previously booked flight and the new one you need to get home.

Trip Cancellations

If you can’t go on your cruise for a covered reason, the insurance will refund you the expenses you’ve paid up to that point. Some covered reasons for trip cancellation include your or a close family member’s illness or a jury duty summons.

Medical Emergencies

If you need medical care in a country where your health insurance plan is different from your travel insurance, your travel insurance will provide a financial security plan. You won’t have to foot the bill for international medical care. Some plans also cover emergency medical transportation to get you back to the U.S. for treatment.

Lost, Stolen or Delayed Baggage

Cover your baggage if lost, stolen or delayed during your travels. This includes while it is in the care of the airline and when it is on the cruise ship. It covers replacing the items if the luggage is never returned to you or purchasing items while in port to help you get by until you get your luggage back.

What Is Not Covered?

Travel insurance for cruises offers many outstanding coverage options to protect your financial investment and prepare for unforeseen events. However, the insurance does have some limitations. Here are some common exclusions in most plans.

  • Reasonably foreseeable events that lead to cancellation or problems while on your trip
  • Acts of war
  • Known storms
  • Government-imposed travel restrictions
  • Preexisting medical conditions unless you purchase an insurance plan that includes this add-on
  • Dangerous activities, such as sky diving or parasailing
  • Unlawful acts
  • Injuries you sustain while under the influence of illegal drugs, you do not have a prescription for

How Much Does a Cruise Travel Insurance Policy Cost?

Cruise travel insurance costs approximately 3-10% of your trip costs. The final cost of your insurance will depend on how many people you’re covering, the level of coverage you’re seeking, the ages of the travelers you’re insuring, the length of your trip, and various other unique risk factors that insurance companies use to quote your insurance.

Should You Buy Travel Insurance Through a Cruise Line?

Many cruise lines offer the chance to purchase travel insurance when booking. However, shopping around for the best insurance is in your best interest. Policies offered through cruise lines are fast and easy to purchase but don’t allow for customizations and often come at a premium. While you know you won’t forget to shop around for this important insurance and can complete your booking faster when you buy through the cruise line, it’s often better to talk to an agent or shop a comparison website for travel insurance than to book through cruise lines or airlines.

When you do some independent research, you can often find outstanding travel benefits for a better price. Ideally, you also want travel insurance as primary coverage. That way, you don’t have to go through your homeowners insurance policy or pay the larger deductibles your homeowners insurance policy charges for losses.

Protect Your Voyage from a Variety of Mishaps

Cruises are exciting and relaxing experiences. You can go from exploring new cities to relaxing on the cruise ship deck with a cold beverage. It’s an incredible mix of adventure and relaxation you won’t find with many other types of trips. Protect your investment with trip insurance designed specifically for cruises.

A cruise vacation can take much of the stress out of planning a vacation. With a pre-set itinerary on the high seas, you don't have to worry about how you're getting to your destination and what you're going to do there. However, an unexpected emergency can take the wind out of your sails and money out of your travel budget. So you'll want to ensure you have the best cruise insurance plan that won't leave you high and dry in an emergency.

Best Cruise Insurance Plans of 2024 Summary

  • Best overall: Nationwide Travel Insurance
  • Best for affordability: AXA Assistance USA
  • Best for seniors: Seven Corners Travel Insurance
  • Best for expensive trips: HTH Worldwide Travel Insurance
  • Best for exotic locations: World Nomads Travel Insurance

Top Cruise Travel Insurance Company Comparison

While booking a cruise takes off much of the pressure when coming up with itineraries, your trip can still encounter several hitches, which is where cruise travel comes in. The best cruise travel insurance will have high coverage limits on emergency medical evacuations, as sea to land evacuations can be expensive. They'll offer coverage for baggage delay, trip interruption, and it might be a good idea to have some adventure sports coverage if you plan on participating in any outdoor activities like snorkeling or scuba diving.

Here are our picks for the best cruise travel insurance companies in 2024.

Best Cruise Insurance Overall

Nationwide travel insurance.

Nationwide is a long-standing and reputable brand within the insurance marketplace that offers cruise insurance plans with solid coverage and reasonable rates.

It has three cruise insurance options: Universal, Choice, and Luxury. The Nationwide Choice plan, for example, offers $100,000 in emergency medical coverage and $500,000 in emergency medical evacuation coverage.

The right plan for you depends on your budget and coverage needs. But each plan offers cruise-specific coverages like ship-based mechanical breakdowns, coverage for missed prepaid excursions if your cruise itinerary changes, and covered service disruptions aboard the cruise ship.

Best Cruise Insurance for Affordability

Axa assistance usa.

AXA offers three comprehensive coverage plans: Gold, Silver, and Platinum. Each of these plans offers coverage for issues like missed flights, medical emergencies, lost luggage, and more.

The highest-tier Platinum plan provides $250,000 in medical emergency coverage and $1 million in medical evacuation coverage. The baggage loss coverage is $3,000 per person, and their missed connection coverage is $1,500 per person for cruises and tours.

In addition, travelers can take advantage of AXA's concierge service, which provides an extensive network of international service providers. They'll be able to assist you with things like restaurant reservations and referrals, golf course information, and more. This service could come in handy if you're stopping at a variety of unfamiliar destinations during your cruise.

The coverage limits on AXA's policies are on the higher end compared to other providers. And you can buy coverage for a little as 4% of your trip cost depending on your age, travel destination, and state of residence.

Best Cruise Insurance for Seniors

Seven corners travel insurance.

Seven Corners Travel Insurance lets cruisers enjoy traveling in their golden years with the knowledge they're covered in the event of an accident or emergency. While other providers do offer coverage to those 80+ years old, Seven Corners is known for its affordable premiums while offering above-average medical expenses and medical evacuation coverage limits — two areas of travel insurance coverage that are even more important as we get older.

Seven Corners also offers the option of a pre-existing conditions waiver and CFAR insurance at an additional cost, plus "Trip Interruption for Any Reason" coverage, which you won't find on many policies.

You can choose between the Trip Protection Basic or Trip Protection Choice plans, with the higher-tier Choice plan costing more but providing more coverage.

Best Cruise Insurance for Expensive Trips

Hth worldwide travel insurance.

HTH Worldwide offers three levels of trip protection: TripProtector Economy, Classic, and Preferred. The higher the tier, the more coverage you'll get for things like baggage delays, trip delays & cancellations, and medical expenses. But their premiums remain reasonable even at the highest tier of coverage.

Not only does the HTH Worldwide Trip Protector Preferred plan offer higher-than-average medical emergency and evacuation coverage limits ($500,000 and $1 million, respectively), but you'll also get a baggage loss coverage limit of $2,000 per person and coverage for trip interruption of up to 200% of the trip cost. You also have the option to add CFAR coverage for an additional cost, as long as you purchase within 21 days of your initial trip deposit.

Best Cruise Insurance for Exotic Locations

World nomads travel insurance.

World Nomads has been a top choice for comprehensive travel insurance for many years now. And it's a great option when it comes to cruise coverage, too.

Even the most basic Standard Plan comes with $100,000 in medical emergency coverage and $300,000 in emergency evacuation coverage. And you'll get higher coverage limits with their Premium Plan. Plus, unlike many other providers, World Nomads trip cancellation and emergency medical coverage include COVID-19-related issues.

What sets World Nomads apart from many other insurance companies is that its policies cover 200+ adventure sports. This can be important for adventurous cruisers who plan to take part in activities like jet skiing, scuba diving, or parasailing during their cruise. Additionally, World Nomads is one of the few travel insurance providers that sells policies to people who have already departed for their trip. However, you'll have to wait 72 hours before the policy kicks in.

Introduction to Cruise Insurance

Cruise insurance may offer unique coverage like missed port of call and medical evacuation coverage. You might not need the flight protections of a regular travel insurance plan if you're catching a cruise at a port near you, but medical and cancel for any reason coverage could be critical. The best travel insurance plans will provide flexibility to add coverage options to fit your travels needs.

Understanding the Basics of Cruise Insurance

At its core, cruise insurance is your financial lifeboat, designed to protect you from unforeseen events that could disrupt your sea voyage. Whether it's a sudden illness, adverse weather, or other unexpected occurrences, having the right insurance can make a world of difference.

Why Cruise Insurance is Important

Picture this: You're all set for your dream cruise, but a sudden family emergency means you can't set sail. Or worse, you fall ill in the middle of the ocean. Without cruise insurance, you're not just missing out on an adventure, but also facing potentially huge financial losses. That's why securing cruise insurance isn't just recommended; it's a crucial part of your cruise planning.

Types of Cruise Insurance Coverage

Cruise insurance isn't a one-size-fits-all life jacket. There are various types of coverage, each tailored to protect different aspects of your cruise experience.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Coverage

This coverage is like your safety net, catching you financially if you need to cancel your trip last minute or cut it short due to emergencies, be it due to personal, health-related, or even certain work conflicts. Interruption coverage should also include coverage for missed stops on your cruise.

Medical Coverage

Being on a cruise shouldn't mean being adrift from medical care. Travel medical coverage ensures that if you fall ill or get injured, your medical expenses won't sink your finances.

When you purchase travel medical insurance, be sure to note whether your coverage is primary or secondary. Secondary insurance means you'll need to file a claim with your primary insurance provider before filing with your travel insurance provider.

Emergency Evacuation Coverage

In the rare case that you need to be evacuated from the ship due to a medical emergency or severe weather, this coverage ensures you're not left adrift in a sea of expenses. You'll want high coverage limits for emergency evacuation, as sea-to-land evacuations can be costly.

Baggage and Personal Effects Coverage

Imagine reaching your dream destination only to find your luggage lost at sea. This coverage ensures that lost, stolen, or damaged baggage doesn't dampen your cruise experience. It'll reimburse you for any money you spent replacing items while traveling.

Adventure Sports Coverage

Cruises often offer activities that can be classified as adventure sports, such as snorkeling and scuba diving. Medical treatment for injuries sustained while participating in these activities isn't normally covered under normal travel medical coverage. You'll want to ensure that your policy explicitly includes these policies or offers an add-on for adventure sports coverage.

Tips for Buying Cruise Insurance

Securing the best cruise insurance isn't just about finding the best price; it's about ensuring it covers all your potential needs.

When to Purchase Cruise Insurance

It's always best to purchase cruise insurance soon after placing the initial deposit on your cruise. The sooner you buy your insurance, the quicker your trip is protected against a sudden cancellation. Additionally, most travel insurance plans have optional riders you can add to your policy as long as you purchase your policy within a certain window.

For example, cancel for any reason coverage often needs to be purchased within a purchasing window, which can last anywhere between a few days to three weeks from your initial trip deposit. You can also get your pre-existing conditions covered under the same conditions.

That said, most companies will let you buy travel insurance up until the day before your departure. There are some limited policies that you can purchase after you've left for your trip, such as Allianz OneTrip Emergency Medical  policy.

How to Find the Best Deals on Cruise Insurance

Keep a lookout for deals, but remember, the cheapest option isn't always the best. Balance cost with coverage, and ensure you're getting the protection you need at a price that doesn't rock your financial boat. A travel insurance comparison site like VisitorsCoverage and InsureMyTrip are good places to compare multiple quotes from all of the major carriers at once.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed Cruise Insurance Plans

When comparing cruise travel insurance providers, we evaluated them based on the following criteria to come up with our list of top picks:

Customer Satisfaction

We look at ratings from JD Power and other industry giants to see where a company ranks in customer satisfaction. We also look at customer review sites like Trustpilot, SquareMouth , and InsureMyTrip to see what customers have to say, particularly about claims experience.

Policy Types

The most important part of any travel insurance company, we look at all the policies a company offers. While we looked at coverage limits, we also looked at options for multi-trip plans, travel medical insurance, and pre-existing condition coverage. We also considered policy flexibility and add ons that a company offers.

Average Premiums

We compare average premiums per trip. Some companies also offer annual plans, and we compare policies accordingly.

Claims Paid

How frequently do companies pay claims easily and quickly? We check customer reviews and other resources to see which companies honor policies most effectively.

We look at the company's overall behavior. Is it operating ethically? Companies can earn additional points for such behaviors.

Best Cruise Travel Insurance FAQs

As a rule of thumb, you can expect to pay between 5% and 10% of your total trip cost for cruise insurance coverage. However, your premiums will vary depending on factors like your age, your travel destination, length of travel, and any add-ons.

Cruise insurance typically covers trip cancellations, interruptions, medical emergencies, emergency evacuations, and lost or damaged baggage, though coverage can vary based on the policy

Your options for travel insurance is severely limited after your trip starts, but you still have a few options. World Nomads offers policies to people who have already departed on their cruise. However, once you buy coverage, you'll have to wait 72 hours before it kicks in.

The difference between traditional travel insurance and cruise insurance is that cruise insurance offers more specialized coverage, for situations such as missing a departure port and more coverage for medical evacuations, since it's more expensive to evacuate someone at sea than on land.

Most cruise insurance includes coverage for missing a departure port, so you should be able to claim for a missed port. Just make sure you check the details of your policy before you file a claim and before you travel, so you know what compensation you're entitled to.
