Namibia is a land of contrasts and offers some spectacular options for riding safaris and trail rides. From the stunning dunes at Sossusvlei to the desolate wonder of the Skeleton coast; the dramatic canyons of Fish River and the vastness of the Namib desert, there are horseback rides to amaze you. Namibia is best suited to competent or experienced riders, who can make full benefit of the wide open spaces and spirited horses.

One of our most challenging trail rides is the Namib Desert trail - 400km across the desert to the coast at Swakopmund, camping every night, this one is for experienced and adventurous riders only.

For an exploratory-style trail ride, the  Skeleton Damara safari  is an incredible choice. On incredibly fit horses, you will set off from the Skeleton Coast, into remote western Damaraland before you finally make your way back to the Atlantic Coast.

For a more traditional riding safari, viewing giraffe, zebra, various antelope and white rhino, then choose Okapuka - and experience the thrill of riding an Arabian horse too.

You can also try your hand at Endurance riding in an actual competition on endurance horses owned and trained by Okapuka - a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Ride The Wild

The bucket list riding adventure of a lifetime.

Namibia horse safaris.

Imagine leaving cellphone signal, work emails and life in general for just a bit.  Your days are one seamless flow of riding, eating and sleeping, and on each you’re becoming more connected to this new reality. You’re tired, but the good tired .

The one that comes from being outdoors and using your body, ensuring that you fall asleep each night within minutes as you melt into your stretcher bed , wrapped in a cloud-like feather duvet on a soft mattress – a type of camping you never thought was possible, in the middle of nowhere. And it’s all capped off with visions of the star-studded sky.

In the morning, you can hear small movements as fellow riders and crew begin to wake up and join the day, passing out hot coffee around the crackling dawn fire . The horses are eager on the picket line, nodding their heads and gently stamping their feet. Breakfast is hearty and delicious – everything that Rayne cooks out here is a blessing, with a variety and standard one wouldn’t expect to find in the desert, but rather your favorite local restaurant, with food sourced and utilized as it should be.

And then you’re off, astride a horse with whom you’ve created that incredible bond only a horse and rider can describe . The horses here are open-minded and full of life, living at liberty in a large herd in open fields for most of the year. Loose horses pass, trotting up ahead of the group and then looking back to see if we’re following. They form a small gang, confident amongst themselves and cocky in their freedom. And then your guide calls for a faster pace. Your horse knows already, his stride quickening until your eyes are streaming and the world flashes by in a tunnel vision of exhilaration.

The landscapes are staggeringly vast and change every few kilometers, revealing more and more of Namibia desert treasures as it subtly converts you into a devotee, offering resounding praise to its beauty and silence that none but fellow Namibian travelers understand .

Most of the Namibian rides cover approximately 250km+ over 7 or 8 days of riding.

Trip pace is largely determined by the terrain on any given day. Plenty of long scenic canters to cover ground as well as a few ‘let ’em loose’ gallops that this company is renowned for.

Cross desert plains, ephemeral rivers, rolling dunes and vast canyons with sightings of elusive desert wildlife along the way.

Agile and ready to take on the day! Carefully selected trail horses built for long treks and light-seated riders with soft hands.

Hardy and sure-footed, the horses are mixes of Arabs, Boerperds (a South African trail + working breed), Thoroughbreds, Warmbloods + farm ponies, most with lighter frames better suited for desert climates. Ranging in height from 14.3 to 16.2.

Namibia Horse Safaris

You’re riding fit and ready for long days in the saddle. These Namibian horseback safaris are not for the faint of heart, requiring stamina and a flexible demeanor. For the adventurous yet mindful and attentive experienced rider, these horse safaris will provide a once-in-a-lifetime trip that you’ll want to do again. You need not be an accomplished rider but you must be completely comfortable at a canter with soft hands in a large group of other cantering horses!

Namibia Horse Safaris

Welcome to Camp Life.

Your first and last nights will be spent in a lodge and/or beautiful beach house – safari dependent! The 8 nights in between are blissfully spent sleeping under the stars . Lush linen with goose feather duvet and a soft mattress bedroll are rested on a stretcher. Riders can opt to sleep in a tent rather than out in the open, if they wish (but we really don’t recommend it – give it a try sleeping completely outdoors!).

Your luggage is transported for you by the camp vehicles which meet you at lunch stops and the overnight camps. Hot bucket showers are setup in the evening for you to wash away the dirt and dust, either before or after dinner.

You’ll enjoy 5* food, cooked over a fire (no, seriously). Award-winning Chef Rayne will prepare 3 delicious and well-rounded meals for you each day. Dietary requirements can of course be catered for. Riders won’t go thirsty on trail either. Stay hydrated with two 1 liter water bottles attached to your saddle, refillable at lunch stops. Welcome in a new day with coffee or tea, and toast to a day well done. All your beverage needs are provided.

Namibia Horse Safari Reviews

SUPERLATIVE IN EVERY SENSE … HORSES, STAFF, FOOD LOGISTICS “I’ll be talking about crossing the Namib Desert with Hagar (the horse), a band of merry travelers, and an incredible compliment of staff and horses until the day I die. They’re that good. If you enjoy days of riding (with exceptionally well-cared for horses), sleeping under the stars and indescribably beautiful scenery, go ahead and book.”

A TRUE ADVENTURE, FANTASTIC HORSES, A HARDWORKING TEAM “The ride exceeded my expectation big time … The performance of the horses was unbeatable. I could not imagine what a cook could do with simple kitchen appliances on a simple campfire until I came here The culinary suprises were amazing… Comparing this safari with the other 12 rides I have done, I would consider this the best.”

THE HORSES WERE BEAUTIFULLY PRODUCED AND ACCURATELY MATCHED TO EACH GUEST. “Camp staff and guides were professional at all time whilst always patiient and kind. The food was outstanding. All aspects of camp had been very carefully thought out in detail down to the best bedrolls with high quality branded bed linen. Communications were consistently clear…The safari developed a gentle and deeply happy rhythm…Experience was suberb, exceeded expectations and I would recommend it to those with a hunger for the remote.”

SUPERB! “Camp life provides you with everything you need but nothing you don’t. It feel like such a relief to leave behind all the non-essentials… Camp was always set up to look so inviting when riding in after a long day… smiles, snacks and alcohol to greet you! The horses were well beyond my expectations. They had such big hearts and loads of stamina. I come from a hunt background and enjoy riding Thoroughbreds at speed and was not disappointed. This is a real adventure (and) worth every penny…just do it!”

Horse Safari FAQs

What is a namibian horse safari.

An African horse safari in Namibia is unlike any other horse riding holiday on the planet. It isn’t just an experience but rather a feeling.

To ride a horse across the ancient Namib desert, through million-year-old craters, canyons and rivers to the unforgiving Skeleton coast, or whichever route you so choose – is a practice in pure, raw emotion. A Namibia horse safari is both exhilirating and challenging as well as peaceful and unhurried. It is an experience that will stay with you for life.

From smooth windswept sands that beg for a gallop to rough and rocky terrain and deep canyon descents and ascents where you’ll walk side-by-side with your trail horse, the landscapes and visual experiences of Namibia are various and each as beautiful and awe-inspiring as the last. The Namib desert, Damaraland, Skeleton Coast to the interminable dunes of Sossusvlei.

The safari operator in Namibia has been riding these routes for over 20 years yet with little trace of ever stepping foot (or hoof) on the landscape. A small and dedicted team of professionals with a dry sense of humor and a come-what-may attitude, ensure guests will have a meaningful. safe and thoroughly enjoyable experience both on and off their horses.

Though Namibia itself is a rather large country, it is the least populated country in Africa. It is a sparsely populated country of just 2.1 persons per square kilometer and a population of ~ 1.8 million. You’ll likely encounter not a single other soul on your trail ride across Namibia other than your fellow riders and crew – as well as the elusive (or occassionally imposing) wildilfe of the desert landscape.

You’ll not spend a moment indoors for most of your trip. Nor will you have a cell phone or email pinging for your attention. The effect this will have on your body, mind and soul is almost indescribable. Eat, sleep, shower and ride with only the vast Namibian sky as your ceiling.

The trails across Namibia are mostly 10 night adventures, traveling from camp to camp on this mobile safari. Riding only from April through November, the safaris in this desert landscape are only suitable for the confident and fit riders with strong intermediate to advanced riding skills and above. Riders will spend long hours in the saddle for several consecutive days. Don’t just be fit, but be riding fit ready to keep a light seat and a soft hand. You should be riding 2-3 times per week in preparation for these riding trails and to ensure you have the best experience possible.

What is a typical day like on these trails?

You’ll be allocated a horse for the duration of your safari based on your in-depth rider form answers and personal conversations with the safari company before and with the guide himself at the pre-ride briefing upon arrival.

Riders will take care of their horse too, grooming and tacking up in the mornings as well as untacking after the afternoon ride to let their horse roll, drink and be tied to the picket line (and in that order!) for dinner.

Your luggage is transported for you via the truck which transfers and sets up camp each day. Small tents can be put up for those who wish, however most guests certainly prefer the opportunity to sleep out under the stars only found in an uncluttered African sky. We also strongly encourage riders to forgoe the tent and marvel in the rest afforded only to those who sleep in open-air.

Each day will begin with riders waking up with the sun, to attend to the loo, get dressed for a day of riding, and head to the breakfast campfire where hot coffee and tea awaits. You’ll mount up by about 8am to set off for the first half of your day, ridng between 3-5 hours in the cool of the day before reaching the next camp for lunch. Stretch your limbs and rest beneath the shade of the camp truck while lunch and refreshingly cold beverages are served. The midday break is between 2-3 hours, allowing you to nap in peace, chat with riders and re-apply sunscreen.

The riding continues after lunch for a further 2-3 hours, arriving at your overnight camp thirsty, dusty and ready for an early night. Days average 30-60km in the saddle over varying terrain and often only a tiny bush to be had for a loo stop, and thus a sense of humor should be packed along with your riding boots.

Arrive into camp in the early evening, take a hot bucket shower under the stars and delight in putting on fresh non-riding clothes to gather around the camp kitchen and fire for a meal worthy of a 5* restaurant. Chef Rayne produces incredible field-kitchen culinary feasts for guests 3 times per day, and there is never a cold beer or refreshing soda or sparkling water too far from your hand (or a refill).

Then it’s off to your stretcher bed and a surprisingly luxe sleeping bag / bed roll for a restful sleep under the stars.

Horse Riding Holidays in NAMIBIA

Riding in Namibia is ideal for fit, adventurous riders and will reward them with a holiday of a lifetime. In addition, Namibia has fascinating programmes for non-riders, most especially those interested in nature or photography.

Namibia is county of wildlife, vast tranquil wildness and dramatic desert scenery. It is the least densely populated country in the world with huge open spaces. It is a former German colony and has a stable democratic government. Its Atlantic coastline on the west has almost 1300 kilometres of desolate beaches .  It's here you'll find the much-documented Skeleton Coast and the remarkable desert elephants that, largely thanks to David Attenborough, Namibia has become famous for.

Wildlife viewing is best in the northern parts with the Etosha Pan, Damaraland and the Caprivi Strip all worth visiting.  Wildlife viewing here is excellent, virtually guaranteed, as the waterholes attract many animals. We offer riding in the Damaraland/Elephant Skeleton Coast area. Further game viewing and good riding is offered near Windhoek, the capital.

In the centre of Namibia deserts takes over and stretch all the way to the south. We offer the classic Namib Desert Crossing in the south, riding from the centre, across a mountains range and through the deserts to the coast. Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert has immense sand dunes, deep apricot in colour and high as mountains. Despite its desolation you'll spot birds and the odd oryx or two. A real treat is to set out before dawn to climb a dune as the sun rises, then slide down to a champagne breakfast in the shade of a thorn tree.

Another desert, the Kalahari, lies in the east of Namibia and then in the south the majestic Fish River Canyon is located. The canyon is second in size to the Grand Canyon. It is 93 miles long, up to 17 miles wide and over half a mile deep. The Quiver Tree - a member of the aloe family grows here. Another wonderful ride for good fit riders wanting a fast-paced ride.

The overriding feature of this wonderful country of Namibia is its vast and dramatic emptiness, such wonderful landscapes for exhilarating horse-riding adventures.

The  Namib Desert Trail is the flagship ride in Nambia and is defintely not for the faint hearted. Billed as the toughest ride in the world, this challenging 12 day ride covers 400 km across the Namib desert. On this riding holiday you see all of Namibia's landscapes, from the highlands and semi-desert sheep farms, down the magnificent escarpment, through stoney and mountainous desert, red sand dunes and finally the beach and the Atlantic Ocean. Sooner or later all serious riders end up here! The un-worldly Skeleton Coast , home of the desert elephant, offers another wonderful horseback holiday in Africa as does the restricted Diamond Area (Sperrgebiet) on historic ground in the area of the wonderful wild horses of the Namib Desert.

Our last equestrian holiday is in the Fish River Canyon  area. With a combination of dramatic canyon landscapes, spacious desert planes and the mighty Orange River this Namibian horse riding holiday offers the oportunity to experience both inaccessible countryside and real wilderness areas as well the pure joy of riding without limitations.

After expending your energy on our horseback trips in Nambia you may like to add an extension to your holiday and take in some sights before you fly home.  If your trip has been in one of the country's regions detailed above, we can always arrange trips to the other areas, or perhaps a night in the capital Windhoek or how about going further afield with a trip to the thundering magnificent Victoria Falls, just at the end of the Caprivi Strip. We can arrange all this for you.

Begin by relaxing from your international flight within the luxurious confines of the Olive Exclusive in Windhoek. After a good night's rest, meet up with your riding group for a welcome breakfast and drive into Damaraland, where you will get acquainted with your horses, enjoy your first sundowner, and spend your first night under Namibia's spectacular canopy of stars.

Your Namibia horse safari starts at at the famous Twyfelfontein rock engravings and leads you through the remote and extremely rugged terrain of Damaraland, a land of tortured volcanic history, free-ranging game, and huge ephemeral river systems.

Each morning begins with a lavish breakfast around the campfire and a four- to five-hour morning ride before stopping for a leisurely lunch and siesta on the trail. Heading westward, you will pass fascinating geological formations reminiscent of a giant's abandoned Lego set and encounter rare desert-adapted wildlife such as elephant, rhino, cheetah, and more. The varied terrain allows for canters through gently undulating grassy fields, gallops down the Huab and Ugab watercourses under the shade of their substantial Ana trees, and gentle trots through the wide, stony plains gently falling toward the forbidding Skeleton Coast.

Camps are pitched at sunset, when you can relax from the ride with a hot bucket shower and a generous Namibian meal cooked over the open fire. NAMIBIA HORSE RIDING SAFARI

If you want something fast, this ride is for you! An amazing horse riding experience in some of the best desert terrains in the world. Choose between 4 different trails and ride through some of the most iconic places in the country - the Namib Desert, Damaraland, the Skeleton Coast and the Wild Horses Sanctuary. Ride 350km through pristine scenery, sleep under the open sky (literally) and take the chance to see the incredible wildlife of Namibia!

  • What is Bronco Wild Club? All our expeditions aim at exploring some of the wildest places on earth on horseback. We offer you the opportunity to share the lives of local people and learn more about their horse culture and traditions in a unique way. We avoid working with big tour operator companies as we want to aid the communities we visit as much as possible. Sometimes we help local tribes develop routes and trails with the idea to start their own businesses and support their families in a much better way. Gaby Terzieva is leading all expeditions. She has been travelling the world on horseback for years, and now she wants to invite other adventurers to join her and share the thrill of discovering forgotten stories with her.
  • What riding skills do I need to have to sign up for one of these adventures? We have expeditions that cater to different levels of riders. Some of our destinations are suitable for less experienced riders. Nevertheless, all participants should have a well-balanced seat and be able to walk, trot and gallop in full control of their horse in an open space. They should have experience outside of the arena in various terrain and should be able to adapt quickly to different horses, saddles and styles of riding. Preferably they would have a couple of years in the saddle behind their backs.
  • Can non-riders join? Yes, non-riders are welcome to join. They can travel with us in vehicles or with other animals (depending on the destination). We make sure that we fill their program with interesting activities.
  • What to pack for my trip? Before departure, we provide you with a detailed packing list for your trip. You can find more information here.
  • How big are the groups? Usually, our maximum capacity is 10 riders though some rides are only available for 6 or 8 riders.
  • Where do we sleep and are there any washing facilities available out in the wilderness? Accommodation details are shared with you during the booking process. We use lodges, tents, luxurious safari tents, guest houses, yurts, traditional accommodations, local stays and hotels. We aim at providing the best services. Even among the wildest places, we always try to organize shower tents with warm water on the spot as well as toilet facilities (where possible, if not - we just use natural hiding places like rocks, etc.). There are countries where one can shower in the nearby river or waterfall for a more authentic experience. If we cannot provide shower tents for the night, we prepare warm towels for refreshment.
  • Who carries our luggage? Luggage is transported by vehicles except when we go to really remote national parks where cars and buses are not allowed to enter. In these cases, we use animals like yaks and donkeys and we usually take just a small backpack with us for the upcoming day or two (so that we don't put too much weight on the animals). We recommend having one backpack with essential things you are going to need during lunch breaks. Most of the time your big suitcases will be accessible only when we arrive at night camp. We also provide you with saddle bags during the ride.
  • How do I book? If you are interested in joining one of the upcoming expeditions, please do get in touch - you can also call or WhatsApp Gaby directly at +359 884627809. To secure your spot, you need to pay a deposit and fill in a riding form that we will send you in an email. A few weeks before departure, we will send you information booklets with everything you need to know for your trip.
  • Who leads the tours? Gaby Terzieva leads all expeditions. Catalina Camp Prats leads expeditions for Spanish riders exclusively. However, Gaby is always looking for affiliates and people who would be interested to lead their own groups from the country they represent.
  • Travel Information Flights, medical insurance and visas must be provided by the client. We can always help with booking flights or find you good deals. We can issue insurance policies for Bulgarian citizens only. Visas and other travel documentations are the responsibility of the riders.

Exploring the Namibian desert on horseback is one of the most exciting riding experiences in the world. From galloping across vast open plains to cantering up and down the sand dunes, all under a spotless blue sky, adventurous riders will love the riding opportunities available to them as they journey across the oldest desert in the world. Spending the nights next to a dwindling campfire, admiring the stars and enjoying the company of your horse, is a memory to last a lifetime.

These trails are accompanied by an experienced guide (generally Andrew Gillies) and are suitable for the competent, fit rider who is prepared for a challenging adventure. The terrain is often tough, ranging from rocky hills and riverbeds to gravel plains, undulating sand dunes or wide, open expanses suitable for a long gallop. Riding is between 20 - 50km per day on average, sometimes up to eight hours in the saddle, with pace depending on the terrain and temperatures. Riders should be adventurers and have a good sense of humour to make the most of these trails!

The horses are a mix of breeds and are tough and sure-footed, able to cope with the tough terrain and long riding hours - they are schooled and undergo a fitness programme specifically for these trails. Riders can enjoy the ride if they trust their horse and cooperate with the horse since he is generally more experienced in negotiating the terrain. Your hosts believe that each rider will find a horse to match his/her personality and will be going home with fond memories of a remarkable experience. Not only will they carry you through these wild landscapes, such as the Skeleton Coast, but from them you may also have the chance to spot elephant, rhino, cheetah or plains game as they move across the desert (depending on your chosen trail). These horses live free as a herd in the bush when they are not on safari, each horse generally working no more than six safaris each season. This keeps them interested in the job and in good form, both mentally and physically.

Whilst these safaris are primarily camping adventures, you can rest-assured of a good meal and a comfortable bed. The bedrolls feature high thread-count Egyptian cotton bedding, hot bucket showers are put up each night and the camp chef, Rayne, is always ready to cook up a hearty and delicious feast.

**Please note that these are challenging rides, for experienced riders only. Please read the descriptions carefully before booking as your hosts reserve the right to un-horse you if they feel you are not up to the ride, and they offer no refund - you don't need to be an expert but competent, fit and up for it. Please also note that weight limits are strictly adhered to and you may be weighed.**

Custom-made trail saddles, well-fitted to horse and comfortable for rider. Each saddle is fitted with two specially made water bottle holders (bottles supplied). You are welcome to take your own western-style sheepskin cover/seat saver if you like.

Experienced, healthy child riders are accepted but parents are asked to use their discretion as these are tough rides. Anyone unable to keep up with the group may have to travel in the support vehicle sometimes along with any non riders.

Good health and fitness is important for these tough desert trails. If you have severe allergies, heart or respiratory problems or other physical limitations then please consult your doctor. You must be able to dismount and walk beside your horse when needed.

Food & Accommodation

The package prices include all meals and drinks during the ride (only drinks at the guest farms, restaurants, petrol stations etc. are not included in the rate). During the trail you will generally enjoy meals cooked over the open fire at your camp, usually something typically Namibian such as a 'braai' or 'potjie' (casserole).

Breakfast is usually a cooked option such as porridge, scrambled eggs or French toast. 100% Arabica coffee is available. Lunch is also a hot, cooked meal as you are met again by chef Rayne with her 'kitchen trailer' - this could be something like chowder, a pasta dish or meat and salads. Dinner, as cooked on the open camp fire, tends to be hearty stews, fish or vegetables with a dessert. Vegetarians can be catered for with prior notice. Tea, coffee and juice are provided, along with other cold drinks, beers, wine etc. in the evening and there is generally even ice for your G&T!

Accommodation

During all trails you will spend the first and last nights in comfortable, twin-bedded rooms at hotels, lodges or guesthouses. Rooms mostly have en-suite facilities.

Camping during the trail is generally open-air, sleeping on a fold-out camp bed under the stars. Tents are available in the unlikely event of inclement weather or for anyone concerned about privacy, but they will not be put up otherwise. Bedrolls include luxurious, high-thread count Egyptian cotton bedding and are very warm and cosy. You are provided with a bedroll at the start of the trail and then put up your own bed each night (they fold out very easily) in a spot you like. Hot bucket showers are available each night, as is a camping toilet put a little apart from the camp in a separate tent.

Most of the guests on these rides are happy to share accommodation with fellow riders but single rooms are available for the nights at the beginning or end of the trail, subject to a supplement.

Depending on your chosen programme there will be opportunities for wildlife spotting of all kinds from elephants and giraffes to a variety of unusual birds. Alison L., Oct. 17, 2023

Even with everything I have heard, it has managed to surpass expectations. I knew I'd enjoy it, but the whole package of horses, guides, meeting new friends, views, open space, extremely technical riding, and adventure was simply breathtaking. Andrew and Larissa were both outstanding. I have no problem trusting them to produce horses who are up to the challenges of this trail ride and to safely guide all 12 riders over some very tricky terrain and steep uphill ascents and downhill descents.

Barbara M., May 2, 2023

Breathtaking! Favourite memory? Sleeping under the stars.

Silva P., Dec. 7, 2022

I had an absolutely amazing time, the trail was fantastic and my horse Rupert was a rockstar. I would've taken him home with me any day!

Johanna F, Oct. 24, 2017

The trail was wonderful. I cannot think of anything I could criticize. The horses were wonderful, strong and forward going and we had a lot of nice, extremely fast gallops. The food was very delicious. Andrew and his crew were all fun to be around and very attentive to all the guests. Loved the scenery and the nights out under the stars. At this time of the year it was quite pleasant to be outside and the bedrolls they offered were surprisingly comfy and warm. There was no need for the sleeping bag I took with me. The saddles might not have been the comfiest I can think of, but that is just a minor detail. Definitely a ride I would not mind doing again J

Adrian F., Aug. 25, 2009

The riding is unforgettable; the pace is mixed interspersed with some memorable long gallops

Alexandra W., July 3, 2009

An amazing experience. A trail full of incredible beauty and full of adventure. Finishing with an incredible sense of achievement. Overall it was adventurous, wonderful, physically challenging, beautiful and re-building. My favourite memory was the vastness of the desert, watching the loose horses running free in the long grass, seeing the sunset and sleeping under the stars with my horse Leo.

Namib Desert Trail itinerary.

at a glance

A horseback journey across the oldest desert in the world, exploring the spectacular contrasts of Central Namibia. Highlights include riding from Khomas Hochland Mountains and escarpment to the Kuiseb Canyon, Tinkas, Tumas and Welwitschia plains, Moon Valley, seasonal Swakop River, coastal dunes and the Atlantic Ocean.

The trail is not for the faint-hearted and a good sense of humour is recommended. Horse and rider are brought together with patience and respect for one another as they venture out on this challenging experience. This is one of the toughest but most rewarding horse riding trails in the world!

Damara Elephant Ride itinerary.

Almost inaccessible, the Damaraland is a truly spectacular part of Namibia with a range of fascinating landscapes and sights to be experienced. The vast open spaces are almost incomprehensible whereas the ancient craters and prehistoric remnants are interesting to explore. A surprising range of colours merge to create this primeval environment and visiting the forbidding Skeleton Coast is a memory not to be forgotten. During the ride you may encounter elephant, rhino, cheetah and plains game or be caught by rivers in flood, all of which add to this exhilarating adventure.

Highlights include a visit to the Twyfelfontein rock engravings and cultural village, desert-adapted elephant and rhino, dramatic landscapes, areas of real wilderness, the 'Save the Rhino' project and seeing the Cape Cross seal colony.

Skeleton Damara Safari itinerary.

Ride from the formidable Skeleton Coast into the remote western Damaraland and back onto the wild Atlantic Coast - this adventurous riding safari is not for the faint of heart

Wild Horses Safari itinerary.

Pioneering new trails where none existed before, this is a real adventure! From the great dune sea of the central Namib to the very edge of the Sperrgebiet National Park this ride covers some extraordinarily diverse desert terrain.

There are immense grassy plains, signature inselbergs (island mountains) and the rugged Mountain Biosphere Reserve of Tiras.  Ending at Klein Aus Vista near the home of the Wild Horses of the Namib.  This adventurous ride includes some of the most breathtaking desertscapes in the world.

Itinerary & Pricing

Riding: No riding.

You will be met at Windhoek Airport (Hosea Kutako Airport) and transferred to your overnight accommodation where you will have the chance to meet your fellow riders and guides before dinner and a short briefing.

After an early breakfast you will depart for the Sossuvlei area (approximately a 5 hour transfer) via the Spreetshoogt Pass, which delivers the first enticing glimpse of the seemingly endless Namib Desert below. Upon arrival, you will enjoy a tasty lunch before embarking on an afternoon excursion, climbing towering sand dunes for a spectacularly panoramic view of Sossuvlei. Back at camp, a good meal and drinks will settle you into the flow of the ride.

Riding: 4 - 6 hours

The start of your riding adventure begins amid the encircling Naukluft (now'k-looft, German for narrow gorge) - a short ride before lunch allows you to get more acquainted with your horse before you ride into the undulations and isolated hills which are a feature of this area.

Riding: 6 - 8 hours

Continue riding through the isolated desert. Your riding days will begin at sunrise and generally you will depart by 8 am with 4-5 hours riding before lunch. Lunch break varies from 1-2.5 hours  followed by another 2-3 hours riding in the afternoon. Please note this is a true desert so routes may change due to unpredictable weather and other unforeseen circumstances. Each night on the trail is spent camping.

Days 5 to 6 - The Canyons

While Namibia's westward flowing rivers rarely flow, they all run through deep valleys etched at a time when Namibia was wetter and sea levels were lower.  We cross two River Canyons on our way to the Namib plains: the Gaun (Gow'aab) and the much larger Kuiseb (kwee'seb) which forms a dramatic end to the 400 km long Namib Sand Sea. Following the tracks of mountain zebra which crisscross the steep sides of the canyon, a technical descent requires some walking /scrambling into and out of the Canyon.  The high narrow walls of the canyon preserve an almost year round supply of precious water for the game in this area.

Days 7 to 10 - Namib plains to the Swakop River

Good going affords some fast paced riding on the wide grassy plains on the Namib. Occasional dry watercourses, distinguishable by the long lines of acacia trees marking their  courses, much favoured resting place of giraffe, springbok and oryx. As the plains become more arid strange shapes form and disappear in mirages and the dinosaur-like plants such as the gnarled Welwitschia Mirablis tell of a land of great antiquity and also of tremendous solitude.  The Swakop river has eroded a truly ancient geology (600 million years old) exposing a bizarre moon landscape-like geology. Curious black ridges of  dolerite intrusions form whalebacks on the hill surrounding the river basin. And finally to the sea with the last canter along the soft white beach sand of Swakopmund - the end of a truly epic adventure.

After breakfast it's time to say goodbye before returning to Windhoek by a 4 hour transfer, arriving in time for flights departing after 15:00pm, unless you prefer to stay on in Swakopmund for a few extra days.

Take note: Routes can be changed due to unpredictable weather (sandstorm!) and other unforeseen conditions!

To avoid the travelling time by road to Windhoek it is possible to make special road transfer to Walvis Bay International airport at the end of the ride, and then fly direct from Walvis to Johannesburg.

Additional attractions: Many guests extend their Namibia experience from this point with an add-on itinerary of the many exciting activities available from Swakopmund. Local attractions include the highest dunes in the world - the spectacular Sossusvlei. Go dune sand boarding, desert sky diving, dolphin cruising or surf fishing. If it's big game viewing you're after, take a short charter flight to world famous Etosha Pan and experience African luxury in a unique treetop camp or a desert fort.

You will be met on arrival at Windhoek International airport (Hosea Kutako airport) and transferred to a specified B&B in Windhoek. You will meet the rest of the riding group here for a dinner and a representative from the trails will brief you about the ride.

An early breakfast before your journey really begins - a 7 hour transfer to a camp near Twyfelfontein (Doubtful Spring) with lunch en route. Here you will meet the horses and the team.

Riding: 4 - 5 hours

This morning's ride is a chance to get used to your assigned horse. You will explore the Abu-Huab area with its sandy plains, ideal and inviting for great canters. There are also some interesting rock formations to be seen. In the afternoon you will visit the Twyfelfontein rock engravings and a cultural village before enjoying sundowners at a local view point.

Days 4 to 7 - Huab and Ugab River systems

Riding: 5 - 7 hours

With the rising sun on your back, you will spend the next four days on your westward journey to the distant Atlantic. Amongst these ephemeral river systems the cycle of rainfall dictates the seasonal movements of game - whilst not concentrated or in large numbers you may encounter elephant, rhino, oryx, springbok and other desert-adapted wildlife. The huge glacial valleys and impressive mountains which have been eroded, fractured and folded by cataclysmic eruptions present a well preserved snapshot of this ancient land.

Days 8 to 9 - The Great Plains

Leaving the river valleys behind you cross the vastness of the open plains with the striking massive of the Brandberg (burning mountain) forming a dramatic backdrop. The endless plains allow for some fast riding as you approach the Messum Caldera - the eroded remains of a massive collapsed volcano.

Riding: 3 - 5 hours

Your last riding day with a planned arrival at the beach around lunchtime! The Skeleton Coast is an unpredictable shore where the infamous easterly winds either make the water warm enough for a swim... or whip up a sandstorm! The spectacularly formidable Skeleton Coast is is so called due to the wrecked hulls of stranded ships which dot the coastline.

After dismounting for the last time you will be driven to Cape Cross to see the seal colonies and then on to the very comfortable Cape Cross Lodge to overnight.

Depart for Windhoek and Windhoek International Airport (a 5 - 6 hour transfer). Earliest possible flight departure time is 15:00.

Take note: These routes are specifically vague as your guides will decide on the exact trail depending on the prevailing weather and terrain conditions and on which areas are offering the best riding!

Additional attractions: Many guests extend their Namibia experience from this point with an add-on itinerary. Stay a few extra days in Swakopmund where activities available include: dolphin cruises, scenic flights over the area, sand boarding, sky diving, desert tours, quad biking. Visit Etosha National Park before or after the ride for excellent African game viewing opportunities. Visit Sossosvlei sand dunes after the ride.

Arrive at Windhoek airport and transfer to your hotel for the first night. Here you'll have sundowners and dinner with your guide.

After breakfast you'll transfer to the coast, stopping for lunch in Swakopmund after 4 hours. It's another 3 hours by car to the Cape Cross Fur Seal colony. You'll head on from there to meet the team and the waves of the Atlantic at your seaside campsite!

Your first riding day begins with a briefing on saddling and getting acquainted with your horse - the landscape is ever-changing and the pace quickens as the terrain allows for it.

You will arrive into camp in time for sundowners and the appearance of the Milky Way overhead. There is no light pollution here and the stars are spectacular! Take a seat around the campfire with your new companions and enjoys the smells of your dinner cooking over the flames.

Days 4 to 9

For the next six days you will negotiate this incredible landscape, riding up to 50km some days. It looks like you are on another planet as your explore the undulating terrain, dry river washes and geological formations. Damaraland has a violent geological history and unusual landscapes and rocks as a result.

As you ride on you will reach the enormous Ugab river which only flows seasonally and sometimes not for years. When it is flowing it is an incredible force. You will also see the well-known folded rock structures known as the Ugab Folds before you head out of the river valley and onto the wide plains.

Your last riding day takes you across the huge desert plains to the ocean of the Skeleton Coast, known for its shipwrecks dotted along the coastline. You will overnight in the coastal town of Henties Bay in a private house with a spectacular view of the Atlantic Ocean.

An early breakfast followed by transfer to Windhoek International airport for flights departing 15:00 or later. Drive time is around 5 hours and you will arrive at the airport at approximately 13:00.

You will be met at the Windhoek International Airport and transferred to your overnight accommodation. Meet the rest of your riding group for dinner where a member of the safari staff will brief you about what to expect on your adventure.

After breakfast you will be driven to your lunch spot in the quaint town of Maltahoe, then a descent down the Zaris Pass to the Wolwedans Private Reserve - approximately 2,5 hours. Settle in and explore your surroundings, meet your crew and horses before enjoying sundowners in the soft fading evening light with the spectacular Milky Way arching overhead.

Today you set off into the wide expanse of one of the largest Nature Reserves in Southern Africa. Riding across vast plains of truly unspoiled countryside with exceptional panoramic views where sentinel inselbergs (island mountains) dot the desertscape. Herds of Oryx, Springbok and Zebra are a common sight. Tonight you overnight at Boulders Camp nestled amongst huge granite boulders adding to the spectacular desertscape stretching as far as the eye can see.

Setting off across open country where good going allows some fast-paced riding. Lunch is enjoyed under a convenient tree or interesting spot with a good view. You reach our overnight camps in time to enjoy sundowners in the pastel light the Namib is known for, sleeping under the magnificent starry sky. Few places on earth afford so little light pollution and an incomparable view of the southern constellation. Your route may vary depending on weather conditions or other circumstances but be assured, every day will be memorable

Today you set off for your excursions to the Wild Horses of the Namib and Kolmanskop, the old German diamond mining town and explore the coastal town of Luderitz. You end with your last memorable dinner together around the camp-fire.

After breakfast and fond farewells the air transfer to Windhoek departs at 10:10am, arriving in the early afternoon (approximately 12:45).  ** Please note that there are often delays in this route, so you should allow plenty of time if you are planning to catch a connecting flight on the same day.

Please note that this is a sample itinerary - routes can change due to unpredictable weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

FEEDBACK: Postcards from Ol Donyo in Kenya 🌿🐘Riding through the Chyulu hills, between Tsavo and Amboseli, is something else. The horse are just as impressive as the scenery with a mix of highly trained Thoroughbreds, Friesian crosses, Percherons and Somalis as your faithful steeds. Riding at Ol Donyo combines the most exciting riding with the luxury safari of your dreams - think riding along old elephant paths, spotting a sleeping cheetah beneath the shade of a nearby tree followed by sundowners in the luxury of your private suite with sunset views. “This has been an experience that went beyond my expectations on all levels. Right from the start, as we were picked up from our flight by our extraordinary guide Isaac to the warm welcome at the lodge, being introduced to the home for our stay, meeting the horses and up until the very last second of our trip, it was an adventure that has been nothing but fantastic. The lodge, with the friendly and accommodating staff, was a pleasure in itself, but adding on the horse experience with beautiful gallops across the plains on the most beautiful horses elevated the experience to something of a dream. The only downside with this journey was, by the end of our stay, having to leave a place that can only be described as a piece of heaven on earth.”- Emma Holm, 2024One of our best selling horse safaris - Grab your saddles before they’re gone 🤠3 nights from USD $3915 per person sharingPop us a message us if you would like to speak to our safari specialists for more details🩷📸 @jacksonlemunge and @laurahutch._ #horseridingholiday #horseridingholidays #horsesafaris #horsevacation #horsesafari #horsebacksafaris #africanhorsesafaris #africanhorsesafari #horsetravel #horsetravel #kenyatravel #kenyasafari #kenyahorsesafari

What peoplay say about our Safari’s

Testimonials.

My one (and only) bucket list item was a horseback riding safari in Africa. My husband and I decided for our 60th birthdays, we would "gift" each other a trip. I was worried about not being fit enough at 60 to do an all day, every day ride at a fast pace and my hubby is a novice, so Isabel booked us a lodge-based adventure with plenty of riding opportunities at each turn. It couldn't have worked out any better for the both of us. We stayed at Borana, and Lewa Wilderness rhino conservancies and jumped down to Angama in the Mara triangle for a change. All the intercountry flights went smoothly, the Covid era testing went off without a hitch and even the Nairobi dining recommendations were superb. Can't recommend them enough!

- Susan Kahler, Borana Lodge Stay + Lewa Wilderness + Angama Mara

My 17 year old daughter and I just had the best 5 days riding at Ants Nest in South Africa. The set up there is fantastic as the horses live roaming amongst the wild animals. This means that you ride right up to giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, rhinos, warthog and all the different antelope and get so close in an entirely natural and calm way, far removed from a jeep safari. Breathtaking scenery, wonderful staff all of whom went out of their way to make our stay truly special. Highlights included every sundowner, going swimming bareback on the horses and long canters, never knowing what you might spot round the corner. Thank you to African Horse Safaris for finding us the perfect experience, a life long dream fully realised beyond our expectations.

- Pidge Hutton, Ants Nest Lodge Stay

We just returned from 6 nights at Borana, filled with excitement and stories and a true love and appreciation for Kenya. What an absolutely Magical experience! We are a family of four with teen girls 14 & 16. African Safari recommended Borana to us and they were absolutely spot on. The riding, scenery , staff all exceeded our expectations. As I told the staff at Borana they are the keepers of the Garden of Eden. I believe they hold the happiest animals on the planet! They should be so proud of what they do and are doing. We LOVED our entire vacation ALL of us individually and collectively. All Thanks to the wonderful recommendations of Riding Safari. Thank You for the memories and allowing us to score high in the eyes of our teens for choosing the right vacation

- Johanna Samberg, Borana Lodge Stay

What can I say ? This has probably been my most perfect vacation ever. Everything was perfect, down to the most tiny detail. Every transfer we had were on time, nice and sharp (we did have a flat tire on our way to Nedile but it was quick and funny to fix). Nedile & Ants hill were aware we were vegetarian thanks to you and went above and beyond to deliver great food for us. I don't think I have eaten that much in my whole life! All of our riding or game drive went perfect, and indeed in 2 days Jérôme was cantering in the bushes like a pro thanks to the 2 great horses he rode Loulou and Louancia. I also loved the 2 horses I had during my stay, Serai and Serengeti. Great cantering companion with great personalities. We saw so many wild animals we had to make a list of name to remember. We also got to hand feed one of the Rhino at Ant, which was absolutely incredible. The teams were all great, with a strong family feeling: we felt like at home (but way better) and we were so sad to leave. The special attentions I got at Ant for my birthday were just adorable. Jérôme and I both felt really weird being back home, the best experience of our lives was done and we felt very sad. I truly believe we will be back at Ants as soon as we can!

- Deboran Sternis, Ants Hill Lodge

The riding experience on this trip was unmatched. Allison was an expert at navigating us through the dense bush and dynamic landscape. She used her expertise in anti-poaching to safely get us extremely close (8-10meters at times) to wild animals. The riding was fast paced and ever changing. Always something to see or somewhere to go. She had great knowledge of the landscape and would change our rides up if we weren’t seeing animals. Allison was very open that she wanted to make the most of every second of my trip - I really appreciated this. She would also consistently get off her horse to show me tracks, marking, bones, bugs, snares or something interesting. It was very educational and I learned a lot. The horses were fantastic, in great shape and brave as can be.

- Aja Deren, Victoria Falls Horse Safari and introduction to Anti-poaching

We had such an amazing week riding at Borana lodge in Kenya in August! The lodge is stunning, we loved the attention to detail and eco-friendliness. The food was amazing, our room was beautiful and the staff made us feel so spoiled. We rode twice a day with super horses and guides, getting quite close to wildlife and having some fun gallops along the way. The horses are well-trained and lots of fun to ride. The conservancy is huge and every ride was different. We absolutely loved our night fly-camping with the horses - such a special experience! We also took the chance to do a game drive one afternoon and got close to cheetahs and lions. Overall it was the perfect combination of riding, safari and rest at the beautiful lodge. One week definitely felt too short!

Uber Eats rider banned for delivering takeaway on horse

uber driver on horse

A man who rode on a horse to deliver somebody’s Uber Eats order has been banned from working.

A video of Stanley Chen riding the animal in Sydney, Australia , was posted to social media earlier this week.

The original clip posted on Wednesday shows him riding through the streets on his horse Leilani.

Onlookers were left bemused by the funny sight, as Leilani could be seen trotting down the road.

In a TikTok video released yesterday, he said: ‘Look at what just happened, I got banned. I got banned. I can’t believe this.’

Uber told Stanley ‘you may have been delivering orders on animal (sic).’

But he joked and said his horse ‘Leilani is not an animal, she is a queen. I can’t believe you banned her.’

He’s now appealing to people to contact Uber so he can continue doing his job with Leilani.

He said: ‘If you want to see me and Leilani do more Uber delivery orders, go message and tell them to unban me.’

The decision now rests with Uber and it is hoped they get off their high horse.

The company has been contacted for comment.

Here in the UK, a woman was spotted riding her horse to a branch of Tesco Express in Greater Manchester.

She was pictured on her trusty steed, waiting outside the store in Salford.

Passers-by took pictures outside the Irlam shop, amused by the shopper’s unusual choice of transport.

Greater Manchester Police were aware of the unusual supermarket visit, though no horses were detained.
