Summit Camp is a place where kids who have struggled to fit in feel completely at home. Young people with social and emotional challenges find a peer group and enjoy being 'one of the many', not 'one of the few'. Our Teen Travel gives an adolescent that has found it difficult to form friendships and share in 'teen' life the opportunity to reach new heights and grow immensely. Weekender is respite that offers a break for our youngsters and their families, and recharges their battery with fun and companionship. Summit helps our kids by providing confidence, positivity, self-esteem, and- most importantly- friends that share their life experience. …

They did not deliver what was promised. I was told my kid would be supervised at all times, which is what my kid required and I was very clear about that. They promised me they'd have 1:1 supervision at all times. My kid was not supervised, and had a negative incident with another camper. The camp had no explanation as to why they were unsupervised, and my kid was asked to leave early with a lot of urgency even though the camp's negligence caused the problem. The camp owner wouldn't even meet with me. The office was also incredibly disorganized and messy as well, which didn't bode well for how they run things.

I went to the summit center that was 7 weeks long so this review will only apply to that. I've made a pros and cons list Pros: * Staff are nice * You'll do some fun activities and trips * The bunks in the center are slightly nicer than the main camp (with a tv and a kitchenette) *Shep tries his hardest to devote to the campers *many staff are international (talking about your lives outside camp in other cultures gives you something to pass the time) *They played good music (except for kidz bop) Cons: * As a high functioning college student this place wasn't great although I did learn a few things I felt out of place because this place is for low functioning kids who don't know what they're going to do in life * You're not as independent as they say you'll be. Your food intake is controlled, meaning you can't eat outside of designated snack, breakfast lunch, and dinner, which isn't healthy for people like me, you can't go outside the center without a counselor, and you can't stay up late. Understandably some students do need that but I was much more independent than most kids at the center * There were some kids who didn't belong in the center or even the main camp. Some had violent tendencies (I was almost assaulted once). They definitely should kick some of the kids out. There was one kid in my bunk who stole people's stuff and hoarding it, yet they didn't kick him out. Although they kicked a few people out they didn't do enough and pay close attention to the kids I personally think needed a mental institution. * Aside from designated trips you are confined in the middle of nowhere with a bunch of annoying kids, since I came late I was only there for 5 weeks, but 7 weeks of being overwhelmed by "young adults" without some sort of decomposing is extremely unhealthy. To this day I still can't believe I made it through *They were pretty dishonest of what it would be like. They said you'll be independent which is extremely untrue. If you try to reach out to shep with complaints he would be too busy to answer. Obviously things change but they aren't good at clarifying that * If you write letters home I'd recommend you send them physically your unit leader lies to you that they emailed them if you staff to take a picture of them (especially if you say anything negative about the camp or want to leave early) My first week there my unit leader said she did but my mom said she never got them until I started to mail them physically *Aside from the kids who actually went to far. Most of my bunk were very obnoxious, acting like children not young adults. Creating a toxic and overwhelming environment. *It also seemed like the work environment was toxic I saw a couple staff complain about how stressful it is and a few left mid session *Honesdale is cute little mountain town but it's somewhere I'd only spend a week in, not an entire month or summer, especially around kids who don't know how to behave and I'd prefer to have a lot of communication and knowing what's going on in the outside world (which leads me to my next point) *You won't have much communication outside of the once a week center calls, where you call your parents from the landline. You can't use your phone cuz the WIFI is so bad. You also won't know what's going on in the outside world, which in the center they should let you grow more independence by letting you do those things. *There is also not many places to decompress when you're exhausted by the kids who are so loud and annoying. I don't know how any of the staff are able to stay sane through the shit I went through (unruly ass kids in my bunk) Overall, I'd only recommend this place if you are extremely dependent, low functioning, and not a college student. I was able to contain my anxiety and homesickness, which was a skill i learned. Even though the so called magic on the hill didn't have an effect on me it certainly did on others. My advice is if you love or hate this place don't push that on others who have a different opinion than you and stay in your own lane and focus on yourself. The center especially isn't worth a thousand dollars. It's only worth 200 dollars. This review is NOT meant to harass or hurt the business, anyone who works there, any of the campers, or has a different opinion than me it's just my experience.

Summit Camp was probably the worst experience of my life. I was told it would be a nice break and it'd be a great place to make friends. I was also told most of the people there would at least have my intellectual standing which was not the case. I have many friends who are neurodivergent and I enjoy there company but the reason I was going to Summit Camp was to get a break from playing caretaker. When I arrived people seemed friendly enough but as soon as I entered the cabin my heart sunk. The floors were covered in dirt and the toilets clogged so easily and there was a pool of brown water around each toilet the entire three weeks I was there. The showers were dirty and so were the shelves. None of the children were in anyway neurotypical and all needed high levels of assistance. There supposed trampoline part was one small trampoline each child took a turn on while the others waited. Arts and crafts didn't really have any paper that wasn't scrap and good the food was horrible. The food was either undercooked, or soggy or burned. The juice was so watered down that it was essentially just water and the pasta sauce was so watered down it was basically red water. Whilst I was there I wrote my mother a long letter about my issues with Summit camp and had the head councilor named Jill take photos of it to text to my mother. Not only did she not send it she continuously lied in my face. Each day I asked her if she'd gotten a reply and she'd just say "I'll tell you when I get an answer." So the entire time at camp I though my mother was ignoring me. Eventually I was able to arrange a meeting with Jill and the other head of councilors Bre. But when I didn't want to take a group photo Jill tried to guilt trip me into taking a photo saying "We're rearranging our whole day for you so you should be in the photo it's the least you can do." We were also meant to have McDonalds lunch one day as a treat but it turns out the "lunch" was one order of small fries and two burgers for my cabin of eight to share. Although there were some nice people like May and Sienna my counselor who no longer works there. When It was time for me to leave Jill the horrible women attempted to give me a hug which I rejected. And when I went home and wrote a complaint to the owner of Summit Camp Shep he didn't respond. Overall the camp was horrible and the conditions were mortifying with most staff being rude or bossy. And I didn't even mention half the issues like when a counselor named Abby threatened to get someone to force open the door of my bathroom stall and spent the whole time threatening me cause she didn't think I was using the bathroom and when I proved I was she was all snappy at my justifiable annoyance. This camp is overpriced and not worth $5000 dollars at most it's worth $100 dollars and that's being generous. So unless you want to traumatize your child I say spend your money taking them out to lunch.

I went to Summit Camp in 2016-2017 and had a great time with everyone. I loved computers, adventure, go-carts, canteen, basketball, tennis, social dances, swimming, breakfast, lunch and dinner in the dining hall. Shep was the best at Summit Camp. This summer will be the BEST SUMMER EVER!!

Photo of Eve S.

Summit Camp is a wonderful place where kids who need some extra support can enjoy camp. The owner, Shep, is absolutely devoted to the camp and the campers and does everything possible to make sure that the kids have a good experience. Everyone is accepted and has a chance to make friends.

Photo of Brian M.

My time at Summit Camp was not wonderful. I hated my time there because it made me feel worse about myself & the campers in my bunk were not who I would want to hang out with. I would not recommend spending money & time at this camp. There are far better summer camps in America.

Photo of Margie Y.

. I couldn't stand the fact that they never allowed us to eat. If we wanted more food or snacks because we were hungry we we weren't allowed. How dare they deprive children of food!!!

My son just spent 2 weeks at this camp. He was having significant problems last year because he was in fight and flight due to situations from school. Hes now in an amazing out of district school that helped prepare him for this experience. We were worried that he wouldnt be able to sleep since he was still needing suppers to sleep but he did amazing. They asked many questions to try to understand how to support my son.I would recommend the short program of your child has never been to a sleep away camp. It has less people and its the perfect time for them to get used to it. And not feel overwhelmed. Please make sure they are ready for it. We did a short 1 week program for special needs kids that was local that I think helped him as well.He has his favorite counselors and felt so loved. He loved the trips as well.Of course he had some difficulties and the counselors are mostly young but many of them have experienced in their lives people like our kids. The ones I met at the end of the season were so caring and loving. The first week he was home sick a bit and wanted to go home he wrote a journal for the first week that he shared with us and then he stopped writing in it because he was having so much fun.Nothing is ever perfect and everyone has different experiences. You wont always have the glowing reviews because sometimes the kids arent ready for this experience. I know last year when my son was in fight and flight status theres no way he would have been successful there. He had 4 counsels and 5 kids in his bunk. They have less kids at the end of the season and I think the counselors are more seasoned then.Next year he said he wanted to to the whole season We probably wont be able to do that but we would love to Have him go again for the two week program.Ive been reading he other reviews and the negative reviews didnt reflect what we experienced. I know they changed hands a few years ago so anything from about 5 years ago would be different. Also you might want to try a weekend trip. I think they have or have had a trial sleep away camp experience one weekends. We hope they have it again because I would love to bring some of his friends to the camp and experience it before they send them to the camp. This is the first place besides his special needs school where he says that there are people like me.He still struggles with social interactions but I know through this experience he will get the experience to learn.Thank you Shep and crew for being part of the best summer he has ever had.Looking forward to more.

I attended this camp when it opened in 1969. It really helped me and my late parents were very happy with the camp and the late owner Mayer Stiskin. I hope to visit the camp but its 3.5 hours away from me. Im 66 now and I will always hold Summit Camp in my heart and in the highest regard. Highly recommend.

Camp Summit is a blessing. The staff are AMAZING. They take the time to really get to know each camper and develop true relationships. This was evident by the tears from each of them as they said good bye to my son at pickup. Two of his counselors stayed until the bitter end as we drove off as if my son were there little brother.Shep is a great stand in Dad.since obviously most kids would never want to go to summer camp with their own parents Shep took over the role from giving out hugs when needed to rides in the golf cart or even nightly visits at lights out. He did everything I would do minus tucking my son in under the blankets. My son went to another camp for 4 years but we wish we had found Camp Summit sooner. Fantastic experience for my son and us.My son cannot wait to go backafter seeing his growth as a young adult an unbelievable amount of improved self confidence and the ear to ear smile in the many photos I am excited to be able to send him again next summer.Wish there was a way to give them a 10 star rating.

Our son has gone for the mini session the past two summers and had a great time. First thing out of his mouth at pickup this year was can I come back next summer Everyone at the camp is very kind. Communication about how your camper is doing is just enough to keep you informed but also allows you to disconnect knowing they are safe and happy. They have a really nice service that updates with pictures every day so you can see what they are up to. Highly recommend Summit Camp.

I went to Summit Camp in 2016-2017 and was homesick but still loved it. Now I dont go to Summit Camp anymore because I lost touch with all the campers and staff. I loved computers adventure go-carts swimming video production canteen basketball tennis breakfast lunch and dinner in the dining hall. Summit Camp has been around since 1969 but then Shep bought it and became the new directer and owner in 2016. Summit has a life skills program called the Summit Center for ages 18. I miss everyone at Summit Camp so much. This summer it will be the BEST SUMMER EVER

I attended Summit Camp from 2007 to 2009. If there is one thing that those glorious summers taught me it was to show up as my full self. For years people around me had shamed my special interests. Summit Camps magic erased that shame. During my time there I quickly figured out that didnt need to be like everyone else it was better to be myself Years after camp I attended Virginia Wesleyan University and wrote my capstone project on my special interest Mulan. I even presented it at an undergraduate research conference and my memories of Summit gave me the confidence I needed to succeed. My campers creativity led to a job at a nonprofit where I design graphics write feature articles make videos and even sing at special events If I hadnt attended Summit Camp I wouldnt have become the person I am today. Even after I left the Magic on the Hill has continued to touch my life.

As a camper who just finished my first year 4 week session I really am pleased with this place. They have great privileges given to upper camp with specialists from all over the globe. Also I love the ability and freedom to make friends and converse and do activities independently with specialist supervision. The food is pretty good. Not gourmet but good. Also the amount of personalities it cators to with its activities are great. Though sometimes scheduled times are implemented and not all counselors are always perfect or always nice there nice people for the most part. Great experience would recommend.

Amazing summer camp for kids with attention issues The camp has been around for 50 years serving the same population of kids. Its located in the beautiful Pocono mountains of PA. It has everything you think of when you think camp- lake front with huge inflatable slide banana boat pool rock wall zip-line high ropes team building campfire you name it The staff are well trained caring understanding and filled with patience A wonderful nurturing summer home for these kids to connect and grow.

My name is Eliza Bluestein and I have been at Summit from 2011-2018. I recommend this camp because it helps people get ready for their future. it helps people get ready for college and it teaches people to live on their own. Summit camp is not like any other camp. it is very including and it manages to get all of their campers involved with activities.

Echoing the sentiments of other reviewers on here that Summit Camp is truly an amazing camp. They provide clear instructions every step of the way and were in constant communication throughout the summer. They are always willing to accommodate for dietary needs and have years of experience working with special needs children. They also provide a photo site where parents are able to keep up with all the activities going on which makes a great album for children to reminisce when they return. This year due to the pandemic we thought the program might be cancelled but the work that Shep and the rest of the crew did to revise plans to ensure everyones safety was miraculous. The summer camps and the weekenders they provide throughout the year are truly one-of-a-kind. I know my son will never forget the experience he had this summer and I am grateful to all the staff and crew who helped bring the magic to life here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Autism-friendly camps come in all shapes and sizes, making it easier for you to find the one that best suits your needs. An autism-friendly camp may come in the form of a day camp, meaning you drop your child off in the morning and pick them up later that afternoon, or as an overnight camp. The camp programs can range in length from a few days to a few weeks. The campers that attend autism-friendly camps may be autistic only or a mixture of neurotypical and neurodivergent kids. When it comes to support for your child, some camps offer 1:1 support while others have a higher camper-to-counselor ratio.

When choosing the perfect camp for your child there are five key things you should keep in mind:

  • Interests : What does your child like to do? A sports camp probably wouldn’t be a good fit for your little bookworm. Finding the right summer camp that sparks your child’s excitement will aid in transitioning to and from camp, while also ensuring they enjoy their experience.
  • Professional Support:  How much support does your child need? A traveling camp may not be best for your child who tends to elope. Some camps offer 1:1 support for your child, while others may have a higher camper-to-counselor ratio. When looking for a camp, pay close attention to those ratios to ensure there is adequate support for your child’s unique needs.
  • Specializations:  Does the camp specialize in a specific area? If your child is nonverbal and the camp has excellent experience working with nonverbal children, it may be the perfect fit!
  • Responsiveness and Accommodations:  Pay special attention to camps that meet with you one-on-one either by phone, video chat, or in person, to mark out a personalized support plan for your child. You can relax knowing they’re on top of things and making sure your child is properly supported. Don’t be afraid to ask tons of questions —a great camp will welcome them!
  • Location and Commitment:  Not many people like a long commute. You know your child’s comfort level better than anyone else, so you’ll know what’s best for them, whether it’s a half-day camp, a full day, or an overnight experience.

Here are just a few of the benefits of summer camp for autistic children:

Fostering Social Skills:  Summer camp is an excellent opportunity for your child to learn about different social scenarios they may face as they grow up and provide them first-hand experience in how to approach those situations in a safe and supportive environment.

Maintaining Mental Stimulation:  With school out during the summer months, a child with autism may be missing out on many of the core structures inherently provided by the classroom and their classmates. No matter what sort of camp you choose or your child’s unique needs and interests, summer camp is a great way to keep your child mentally stimulated and challenged.

Friendship:  Depending on the camp size, campers are often divided into smaller groups defined by age, interests, gender, and/or needs. These groups not only give your child the opportunity to closely identify with a group that they belong to but provide them an opportunity to learn how to make friends.

Independence and Confidence:  Possibly the greatest benefit of summer camp for your child is the independence they gain. While the counselors are there for support and guidance, kids will have their own responsibilities and choices to make while at camp. Your child will be doing activities independently and actively learning what they like and don’t like. Having these sorts of experiences can boost a child’s self-confidence and nurture your child’s natural curiosity about the world.

Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality

Solar eclipse, what you need to know to watch monday's total solar eclipse.

The NPR Network

A stunning celestial event is visible across the country Monday, when the moon crosses directly in front of the sun: a total solar eclipse. For those in the path of totality, there will be a few brief moments when the moon completely covers the sun and the world becomes dark.

Traveling for totality? Skip ahead.

This will be the last chance to catch a total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. for about 20 years, so here's what you need to know to safely enjoy!

When is the eclipse?

April 8, 2024 there will be a total solar eclipse that crosses from the Pacific coast of Mexico through the United States.

What is totality and why it matters

According to NASA , totality will start around 11:07 a.m. PDT/1:07 EDT in Mexico and leave Maine at around 1:30 pm PDT/3:30 pm EDT.

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

Check out this table for when the partial eclipse and totality are visible in each region or check by zip code here.

A partial solar eclipse will be visible across the contiguous United States, so even if you're not directly in the path, you should be able to see something special, weather permitting.

Unable to get to totality? We'll be sharing highlights here from across the NPR Network throughout the day Monday if you can't see it in real time.

Where to see totality?

More than 30 million people live in the path of totality for Monday's eclipse, and many more in nearby areas.

Here's what we know about Monday's weather forecast.

Why totality matters

As NPR's Neil Greenfieldboyce explains , "During a total eclipse, the sky darkens suddenly and dramatically . The temperature drops. Stars come out. Beautiful colors appear around the horizon. And the once-familiar sun becomes a black void in the sky surrounded by the glowing corona — that's the ghostly white ring that is the sun's atmosphere."

For April's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'OMG' might mean just driving across town

Eclipse Science

For april's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'omg' might mean just driving across town.

A partial eclipse, while still a fun experience, is hardly as dramatic. Those with a view of the partial eclipse will see crescent-shaped shadows like those seen here in 2017.

How to watch safely

If you plan to look directly at the eclipse (partial or totality), you're going to need eclipse glasses handy because looking directly at the sun without proper protection ( traditional sunglasses don't count! ) can be harmful to your eyes.

The perfect celestial soundtrack to the total solar eclipse

The perfect celestial soundtrack to the total solar eclipse

As NPR's Joe Hernandez explains, "Proper eye protection must be worn throughout a total solar eclipse — except for the roughly 3 1/2 to 4 minutes when the moon fully obscures the sun, a brief period known as 'totality.' (You will need to take your glasses off during totality to actually see it.)"

If you don't have access to eclipse glasses, you can get crafty with things you have around the house ( like some of us did back in 2017!) More on that here.

Traveling for totality?

The celestial event is driving a ton of domestic travel to the path of totality. If you're headed out of town to view the eclipse, here are some NPR Network resources for areas in the path of totality:

Texas The path of totality crosses through the Lone Star State, with some areas expecting a possible influx of visitors in the hundreds of thousands to catch prime viewing. Our member stations across the state have gathered local resources to help you navigate the region and the eclipse!

  • San Antonio: Check out the latest from Texas Public Radio
  • Dallas: Explore KERA's coverage for the latest
  • Austin: Head to KUT for the best local resources

Arkansas The eclipse will be cutting through the state, putting Little Rock in the path of totality. Check out Little Rock Public Radio for local resources.

The southwestern edge of the state will be well-positioned to witness the total solar eclipse this year. Kentucky Public Radio is covering the eclipse throughout the region, from Kentuckiana eclipse mania to the University of Louisville's free class about the celestial event. Keep an eye on WKMS for the latest local updates.

Missouri The southeastern corner of the state will be in the path of totality, crossing across towns like Whitewater and Ste. Genevieve. Head to St. Louis Public Radio for local coverage and resources. Illinois Carbondale seems to have won the eclipse lottery, being in the path of totality both in 2017 and for this year's eclipse . For resources from across the state, check out Illinois Public Media .

Indiana A huge portion of the state will be within the path of totality, giving cities across Indiana, including Bloomington and Indianapolis, prime viewing of the eclipse.

  • Bloomington: Check out Indiana Public Media
  • Indianapolis: Head to WFYI for the latest
  • Fort Wayne: Just north of the path of totality, WBOI has resources for the Allen County area

Ohio The Buckeye State is getting bisected by this year's path of totality, plunging a number of the state's most populous areas into darkness for a few minutes on Monday.

  • Cleveland: Head to Ideastream Public Media for the latest.
  • Columbus: With the capital city just south of totality, head to WOSU for regional resources.
  • Cincinnati: Totality will just miss the border town. Here are some tips from WVXU on how to navigate the eclipse in the region.

Pennsylvania Only the northwestern-most corner of the state will catch totality, with views from the lakeside in Erie being particularly well-positioned for a stunning viewing experience. WESA has more from across the region.

Plan to watch the eclipse from a wild mountain summit? Be ready for harsh conditions

Plan to watch the eclipse from a wild mountain summit? Be ready for harsh conditions

New York Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Plattsburgh will fall under the path of totality on Monday. If you're planning to travel to the region for the best views, here are some local resources to stay safe and informed:

  • Buffalo: Head to WBFO for the latest
  • Syracuse: WAER has more on plans in the Salt City
  • North Country: NCPR has the latest from across the region, as well as information on local viewing events to check out

Vermont The Green Mountain State will see totality across its most populous region, including Burlington and Montpelier, as well as the Northeast Kingdom on the Canadian border. Vermont Public has everything you need to know to navigate your time in the region to enjoy the eclipse safely. New Hampshire The northernmost region of the Granite State will be in the path of totality, providing prime viewing to those in Coos County. NHPR has info on local events, travel updates as well as special coverage with New Hampshire Public Television. Maine The last state in the path of totality in the U.S., much of Northern Maine will be positioned for prime viewing. The rural region is preparing for an influx of visitors, and safety officials are encouraging visitors and locals alike to be prepared. Maine Public will be covering the eclipse and has everything you need to know to navigate the region safely.

How to document the eclipse safely

With the ease of cell photography , it can be tempting to reach for your phone to document the eclipse and the moments of totality, but make sure to do so safely.

As NPR's Scott Neuman explains , "For starters, you'll need to wear eclipse glasses or similar protective eye gear while aiming your camera or even just observing the eclipse."

Feeling ambitious? Here are a few more tips.

Or if you're not inclined to capture the moment visually, you lean into some other forms of creative expression. Indiana, for example, has named Linda Neal Reising the official poet in the state for this year's eclipse.

As former NPR reporter and eclipse superfan David Baron shared with Life Kit , viewing totality "[is] like you've left the solar system and are looking back from some other world."

So consider focusing on being present in the moment to enjoy the celestial spectacle.

More resources to enjoy the eclipse

  • Sharing the eclipse with tiny humans? Check out these kid-friendly total solar eclipse learning guides from Vermont Public's But Why, and this great explainer from KERA Kids on the difference between a solar and a lunar eclipse.
  • Want to see how a solar eclipse alters colors? Wear red and green on Monday
  • Plan to wander into the wild for the best view? Here are some tips from outdoor experts.
  • Tips from Bill Nye on the best ways to enjoy the eclipse.

NPR will be sharing highlights here from across the NPR Network throughout the day Monday if you're unable to get out and see it in real time. NPR's Emily Alfin Johnson compiled these resources.
