Slaughter are a hair metal outfit from Las Vegas, Nevada, US, who found huge success with their 1990 album, “Stick It To Ya,” riding the crest of the wave of popularity of the genre before the 90s made way for alternative rock.

Rising out of the ashes of Vinnie Vincent Invasion, members Mark Slaughter (lead vocals/rhythm guitar) and Dana Strum (bass) brought in Tim Kelly (lead guitar) and Blas Elias (drums) to form Slaughter in 1988. The band quickly got to work developing their sound, fusing catchy pop melodies with their driving metal in the hope that they could find crossover appeal between rock fans and pop fans alike.

Success was not long awaited for Slaughter, with their debut album becoming a huge breakthrough hit. Bolstered by three hit singles, “Fly to the Angels,” “Up All Night” and “Spend My Life,” the debut recording went on to be certified double-Platinum in the US. Having been requested by Orion Pictures, the band then recorded the single “Shout it Out,” which appeared in the film, “Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey,” gaining heavy airplay and finding new fans from this exposure.

Their second effort, “The Wild Life,” appeared in 1992, achieving moderate success through the hit, “Real Love,” becoming certified Gold. Plans to return to the studio for a third album were set back by Kelly’s arrest for drug trafficking, as well as a motorcycle accident that prevented Strum from being gable to play due to his injuries. The album was finally completed in 1994 but by then it was released upon a changing musical market and the band were soon dropped from their label.

Signing to CMC Records, they returned with 1995’s “Fear No Evil,” a commercial failure in the US but the band had found a huge market in Japan. After releasing 1997’s “Revolution,” a more psychedelic affair, the band were struck with tragedy, following the sudden death of guitarist Kelly. Despite being deeply affected by the loss, Slaughter continued, releasing 199’s “Back to Reality,” which found commercial success once again through a number of successful singles.

Whilst not returning to the studio, the band have since toured extensively alongside the likes of Mötley Crüe member Vince Neil, Skid Row, Quiet Riot and Firehouse amongst others, helping to keep the hair metal fandom alive.

Live reviews

Members Mark Slaughter (lead vocals/rhythm guitar and namesake of the band) and Dana Strum (bass) brought in Tim Kelly (lead guitar) and Blas Elias (drums) to form what would become Slaughter, a band that bravely crossed lines where lines had never been crossed before. Fusing pop and rock to create only the most alternative of sounds, Slaughter combined the heavy rock and metal that their band name was founded upon (as well as, you know, Mark’s egoism) with catchy pop melodies. The crowds went wild. Arenas cheered. These guys were innovators. Entrepreneurs. In doing the unthinkable, they created the unbelievable. The band’s breakout hit was the fruit of their fruitions. And it was this breakout hit album that marked the band’s live show. They packed their set with nostalgia, playing their earliest hits in order to appease and please the screaming crowd who had come to see them showcase their best. Hits from their album ‘Back to Reality’ also featured heavily and the band commemorated Kelly at the end of the show, in beautiful style.

They were amazing. This is the 3rd time I've seen them. They have only gotten better. Mark was amazing. He set the tone for a great show. Blando was really impressive on lead guitar and at one point, I thought Mark was singing but it was Blando! Dana was right on, fucking hard core bass the whole time. Not to mention his hair...beautiful and golden. Zolten was great on the drums. He's got lots of high energy.

And...I had the good fortune of catching mark on his way out for a brief meet and greet. He is the very cool down to earth guy that you hear he is. Even better looking up close.

That concert will go down as one of the best experiences of my life.

I strongly recommend anyone who gets the chance to see them, do it.

Never stop rocking, Slaughter!

Very glad I was there. Very disappointed in the length of the show. Only 1 hour. This band has so many great songs, and yet they only played an hour and no encour The drummer Zoltan Chaney was the most entertaining drummer I’ve ever seen. I loved how Mark came off stage for Eye To Eye. First time seeing that ! I would see them again, but hopefully with a longer show. Mark needs to get rid of the echo effects. Sure his voice isn’t as high, but it’s still good and that crap just made it worse. Changed up my favorite song of Mad about You, didn’t even recognize it. Nevertheless I would still see Slaughter every chance I get

Slaughter is commonly referred to as a band from the "hair metal era." But their music has stood the test of time and is relevant today. Their sound is a hard rocking sound with a few power ballads.

A Slaughter show is a must see for any rock fan. They give their all when performing and go above and beyond to entertain the fans. They don't just play their instruments, they make you feel the music.

I see Slaughter as much as I can because it is a party atmosphere and a safe way to escape everyday life for a few hours. So if you get a chance to see them, I highly recommend it-You won't regret it!!!

judysac’s profile image

They sounded like some screaming metal band. The music was way too loud. One of the guitar players kept having issues with his guitar and had to keep stopping to fiddle with it. Mark didn’t actually sing anything, just screamed the majority of the songs. They played maybe 5 songs? And I’m only saying maybe 5 because the second song played, they didn’t even finish it. They stopped and started another song mid way. Ticket prices weren’t worth seeing them.

Excellent show. Always look forward to seeing them when they cum thru Phoenix. Wish more 80's hair bands would make an appearance...still waiting for Firehouse! It was awesome to see Mark Slaughter cruise thru the audience to reach out to the fans and even take pics with them. The drummer is absolutely awesome and I even got a pic of him mid air jumping from the Marshall stacks. Wish I could share it but there's no option. Rock on!

dianemil’s profile image

The concert lasted about 45 minutes. I liked that Mark came into the crowd singing and giving high fives. He was not totally on key with his songs and sometimes didn't sing all the words. They did fly to the angels pretty well though. All of a sudden the music stopped without warning and the next band was setting up. That was really weird no encore or goodbyes. I don't know how I feel about that part. Overall not a bad show.

Aww hell yeah seen mark slaughter once before but age is doing him nothing but keeping. Him Rocking n still sexy as ever he came out into the audience not. To. Where. I was tho(dammit) bit. I still have his. Guitar pick from 1st show!! Sorry to hear of his loss of. Is aunt n my condolences to his entire family. N Dumass airlines lost. Luggage but. Still looked pretty dam got to me!!

rrccc69’s profile image

They were awesome as always and Mark even seemed to be more enjoyably relaxed.

Sons of Kaos, the opening band was not their shadow. Kaos animated the audience, possibly much more than a lead band would anticipated. No doubt they were eons more amiable. Got pics with each. But, no, drummer Zoltan (from Slaughter), "had to work", after the show. No fan pics. Sorry for honesty.

yosister’s profile image

What a great show Mark and the band put on in Scottsdale Az at BLK Live. With Mark's ever amazing voice to his actually leaving the stage and getting into the audience for the song "Eye To Eye" was the absolute highlight of the evening. The band also put on a great show with their stylish showmanship. I can not wait to see Slaughter again.

About slaughter.

Slaughter is an American rock band formed in Las Vegas, Nevada by lead vocalist/rhythm guitarist Mark Slaughter and bassist Dana Strum. The band reached stardom in 1990 with their first album Stick It to Ya, which spawned several hit singles including "Up All Night", "Spend My Life", "Mad About You" and "Fly to the Angels". The album reached double platinum status in the United States. The band remains a steady act in national tours, mainly in the Rock Never Stops Tour which features several bands of the same era. Slaughter formed in Las Vegas, Nevada, in late-1988, out of the ashes of lead vocalist Mark Slaughter and bassist Dana Strum's previous band, Vinnie Vincent Invasion. Vinnie Vincent Invasion's record company, Chrysalis Records, took the $4 million contract away from Vinnie Vincent for overexceeding his credit line with the label, and transferred the contract to former members Slaughter and Strum. By 1989, Slaughter and Strum completed the lineup by recruiting lead guitarist Tim Kelly and drummer Blas Elias.

After a four-year break, the Summer Slaughter tour is back. Co-headlined by Veil of Maya and Brand of Sacrifice, the 21-date run will feature performances from Gideon, Left To Suffer, Ten56, Tallah, Cabal, and Brat, with one more act to be announced. The tour kicks off in Brooklyn, NY on July 12th and concludes in Reading, PA on August 10th. Tickets go on sale this Friday (26) at 10 am local time.

Brand of Sacrifice vocalist Kyle Anderson comments:

“We’re so excited to introduce the new age of Summer Slaughter this year with Veil of Maya and this truly awesome lineup of bands! Back in 2019 we were the first band on the bill, so it’s a bit surreal to be here at the top, bringing in the new era of the tour with our first ever full headline set.”

Veil of Maya guitarist Marc Okubo adds:

“It’s an absolute honor to be back on the Summer Slaughter tour. This tour has been responsible for some of my favorite memories of playing music and some of my greatest friendships. This year’s lineup is amazing and I can’t wait to share the stage with these incredible bands.”

Summer Slaughter creator/owner/CEO of the Sumerian Group, Ash Avildsen, states:

“This tour has been crucial year after year for breaking new artists as well as elevating the headline status of established acts. I’m thrilled to be able to bring it back with such a youthful lineup, grateful for all the fans who have stuck by the brand and excited for the new generation to experience the tour for the first time.”

Summer Slaughter Tour Is Making a Comeback This Year

The Summer Slaughter Tour is making a comeback in 2024!

Festival officials confirmed the traveling tour's return for 2024 through their social media, leaving a message on their Instagram that read, "The Summer Slaughter Tour. WE ARE BACK!," also noting that the tour would take place in the U.S. and Canada in July and August this year.

In addition, organizers left a simple four word message for fans in the comments that read, "We are a dynasty."

The History of Summer Slaughter

The Summer Slaughter originated in the U.S. in 2007, founded by Sumerian Records honcho Ash Avildsen. The tour featured a more extreme metal lineup with Necrophagist serving as the inaugural headliner. Decapitated, Cephalic Carnage, Cattle Decapitation, The Faceless and more playing the initial run.

In year two, the festival expanded to include dates in Canada and Europe as well as the U.S. with The Black Dahlia Murder headlining the extreme metal festivities in the U.S., Necrophagist in Canada and Suicide Silence in Europe.

In 2009, the tour branched out with another territory covering Australia and New Zealand for the first time with Necrophagist returning to lead the tour down under. In 2010, the tour visited Mexico for the first time with Job for a Cowboy leading the way.

Over the years, Summer Slaughter became known for giving a platform to extreme metal acts, with the last year of the festival taking place back in 2019 with Cattle Decapitation , Carnifex and The Faceless leading a North American run.

But, in 2020, the music world shut down with COVID restrictions and the tour had remained inactive until this year.

Lineup Guesses

No further details accompanied the announcement, so the lineup still remains a mystery. But that didn't stop fans from speculating in the announcement thread. Given that Brand of Sacrifice 's "Dynasty" accompanied the announcement, may fans were quick to suggest that they would be one of the bands on the bill.

Others shared their hopes for nods to past performers such as The Faceless, The Black Dahlia Murder, Lorna Shore, Job for a Cowboy and Dying Fetus.

But at this point, everything concerning the lineup is just speculation. Stay tuned to the festival website for additional announcements on the lineup, dates and venues and ticketing.

GWAR Announces 'Age Of Entitlement' 2024 U.S. Tour

Shock-rock gods GWAR will embark on the "Age Of Entitlement" tour for two more legs of 2024 headline dates in support of their most recent album "New Dark Ages" .

This summer, the band has enlisted drug metal addicts WEEDEATER along with the habitually offensive cop rock of X-COPS as support. The savage hardcore weirdness of openers SQUID PISSER will alienate what is left of the audience. The summer leg of the "Age Of Entitlement" kicks off on June 7 in Hartford, Connecticut, and wraps on June 17 in Tampa, Florida.

In September, GWAR will go out again to kick more human ass, this time with absolutely brutal Latin American death grinders BRUJERIA , NOLA grindcore face-melters BRAT , and the reptilian Christianity of hardcore punk/metal evangelists CANCER CHRIST . That leg gets going on September 12 in Buffalo, New York and will, mercifully, come to a close on September 20 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

GWAR vocalist Blöthar The Berserker commented: "This is an incredible time in the history of the world, so much death and destruction in the face of so much senseless entitlement and arrogant darkness. We cannot wait to shock some sense into humanity with the most outrageous performance of heavy metal theater ever to descend from the gods."

Tickets go on sale this Friday, April 19 at 10:00 a.m. local time. Pre-sale tickets are available now through Thursday at 10:00 p.m. local time.

GWAR "Age Of Entitlement" tour with WEEDEATER , X-COPS , SQUID PISSER :

Jun. 07 - Hartford, CT @ Webster Theater Jun. 08 - Reading, PA @ Reverb Jun. 09 - Washington DC @ 9:30 Club Jun. 11 - Columbia, SC @ The Senate Jun. 12 - Lexington, KY @ Manchester Music Hall Jun. 13 - Manchester, TN @ Bonnaroo* Jun. 14 - Birmingham, AL @ Iron City Music Hall Jun. 15 - Memphis, TN @ Minglewood Hall Jun. 16 - Destin, FL @ Club LA Jun. 17 - Tampa, FL @ The Ritz Ybor

With BRUJERIA , BRAT , CANCER CHRIST :

Sep. 12 - Buffalo, NY @ Town Ballroom Sep. 13 - Cincinnati, OH @ Bogarts Sep. 14 - Indianapolis, IN @ The Vogue Sep. 16 - Pittsburgh, PA @ Mr. Smalls Sep. 17 - St. Louis, MO @ The Pageant Sep. 18 - Little Rock, AR @ The Hall Sep. 20 - Fayetteville, AR @ JJ’s Live

GWAR released a tenth-anniversary edition of its "Battle Maximus" album last September via Pit Records . This new version is completely remixed and remastered, and features the final recorded vocal performance of Oderus Urungus on the previously unreleased and never-before-heard song "Tammy, Queen Of Dirt" .

GWAR 's latest album, "The New Dark Ages" , was released in June 2022 on CD/digital and was made available on vinyl and cassette in September 2022 via GWAR 's own Pit Records .

"The New Dark Ages" chronicles GWAR 's adventures in the Duoverse, where the band rediscovers old powers such as Blöthar 's terrifying Berserker Mode, and encounter new allies, such as the murderous maven known as The Cutter. Along the way, they battle the living monuments of a lost cause and armies of undead soldiers who rise again to fight a new civil war.

The album concept is tied to a companion graphic novel "GWAR In The Duoverse Of Absurdity" , which was also released in June 2022 by Z2 Comics . In the graphic novel, the bandmembers are sucked off into an alternate universe to do battle with their evil twins and the specter of rogue technology.

"GWAR In The Duoverse Of Absurdity" chronicles the epic battle between GWAR and their doppelgangers from an alternate universe the band discovers behind their treasured Magic Mirror. The book uses an innovative storytelling technique that combines words and pictures printed on paper (made from real trees!) in a seamless format we are calling a "graphic novel." The tale is illustrated by the masterful talents of Andy MacDonald ("Wolverine", "Dr Strange", "Wonder Woman"), Shane White ("Things Undone", "Braun", "Endless Summer"), Matt Maguire (GWAR) and Bob Gorman (GWAR).

Dave Brockie , who fronted GWAR under the name Oderus Urungus , was found dead in his home in Richmond, Virginia in March 2014. According to Virginia's State Medical Examiner's Office, he died from acute heroin toxicity by accidental means.

Brockie was last remaining original member of GWAR , which was founded 40 years ago. He was 50 years old.

The satirical metal band earned a following for its macabre, over-the-top costumes, offensive lyrics and graphic, gore-soaked shows, in which the bandmembers performed as the descendants of alien warriors who arrived on Earth to enslave and slaughter the human race.
