York at Christmas

15 Magical Things to Do in York At Christmas

' src=

Sharing is caring!

York at Christmas

In my opinion, York is one of the best cities in England to visit in winter. It literally oozes Christmas charm as soon as the festive season arrives. Plus, there are so many wonderful things to do in York at Christmas.

Christmas markets in York

We’ve visited York several times during the Christmas period. Once on the way back from our road trip to Edinburgh and again and again simply to explore the Christmas markets . Every time, I was thoroughly impressed with the amount of effort York puts into decorating its historic city centre for Christmas.

15 Things to Do in York at Christmas

So, if you’re planning on visiting York at Christmas, here are the 15 top festive things to do.

1. Explore York’s Christmas Markets

York’s Christmas markets are some of the best in the UK. You’ll find the markets spread across the city, but the main one is St Nicholas Fair down Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square. Here, you’ll see rows upon rows of stalls with vendors selling everything from homemade fudge to hand-crafted Christmas decorations.

Yorks Christmas markets

There are also stalls selling traditional Christmas drinks such as mulled wine, hot cider, and hot chocolate, and foods like mince pies, bratwurst worthy of German markets , and other delicious street food trucks.

Thors Tipi Bar

You can spend ages wandering around the markets, exploring the stalls, buying unique Christmas gifts, and munching on delicious food. Don’t forget to grab a drink from Thor’s Tipi Bar before you leave, but, I’ll warn you, this can get pretty busy!

Top Tip: If you do want a table at Thor’s Tipi Bar, I highly recommend booking in advance. It can get extremely busy.

2. Visit Castle Howard

Castle Howard is one of the best places to visit in York at Christmas. Located approximately 15 miles north of the historic city of York, but it makes the perfect winter day trip . It’s known for its stunning architecture, beautiful gardens, and rich history. This beautiful place becomes a winter wonderland at Christmas and most years the decorations have a unique theme.

Castle Howard at Christmas

In 2023, the land of Peter Pan will come to Castle Howard! between the 12th of November and the 2nd of January , you can explore the wintery Peter Pan-themed festivities including elaborate decorations, and a beautiful light display, and you can even meet Santa Claus. There is a festive Afternoon Tea, a Bauble Emporium, a wreath-making workshop and even a Santa’s Grotto in the courtyard!

Tickets for Christmas in Neverland start at £19 and tickets for the other attractions in Castle Howard are sold separately. Be sure to book quickly though, as it’s likely to sell out! You can buy tickets here .

3. Explore the York Castle Museum

York’s Castle Museum is a fantastic experience when it’s not all decorated with snow. Winter just makes it even better. This museum is a re-enactment of York in times gone by. You can explore its famous Victorian Street dusted with a blanket of snow and wander the cobbles while listening to Christmas cheer and admiring the authentic decorations.

Outside of the main street, there are additional activities that you can do at the museum. There’s a historical mince pie recipe demonstration, a re-enactment of A Christmas Carol, a Christmas Cracker-making workshop, and a Christmas Lino painting workshop. There’s even an adult’s only performance of A Christmas Carol which includes mince pies and mulled wine on arrival.

From the Giant Christmas Tree at the end of the street, to the numerous period rooms decorated with a festive makeover, York Castle Museum is a great Christmas experience that all the family will enjoy.

4. Attend the York Minster Christmas Tree Festival

Located outside the York Minster, the Christmas Tree Festival is one of the best things to do in York at Christmas. The cathedral is already stunning as it’s one of the most impressive cathedrals in the UK, but when you walk inside and see around 60 Christmas trees decorated to their absolute grandest, your jaw will surely drop!

Christmas Tree Festival

You can wander around the trees, comparing the decorations and admiring the different colours and designs. Each of the trees was designed by local businesses, schools, and charities, so many of them have a delightful personal touch to them. Don’t forget to vote for your favourite!

This year (2023), the festival will open on December 2nd and run until January 5th.

5. See the Christmas Lights

If you love exploring Christmas lights and walking through beautifully lit light trails, you’re going to love York at Christmas. There’s quite a selection of light trails and shows to enjoy at this time of year. Some of my favourites include:

Christmas lights in York, England

  • St Nicholas Fair – York’s main Christmas market is full of beautiful lights and decorations.
  • St Helen’s Square – There’s a huge Christmas tree here and plenty of beautiful lights.
  • Museum Gardens – Visit here and find Santa’s post box!
  • Explore the city’s streets – Some of the best streets to see Christmas lights in York include Coppergate, Coney Street, and Parliament Street.

Christmas decorations in York at Christmas

If you want to experience a proper Christmas light trail, you can also visit the Yorkshire Wildlife Park illuminations, the Enchanted Forest light trail at Stockeld Park, or the Christmas spectacle at Roundhay Park.

6. Explore York’s City Centre

York’s city centre is a great place to explore at any time of year, but at Christmas, it truly comes alive. You can wander the cobbled streets drinking in the festive atmosphere (and drinking mulled wine) and admiring the decorations.

York Streets at Christmnas

York’s historic buildings and medieval architecture are adorned with festive decorations, twinkling lights, and wreaths. It’s a super picturesque and magical atmosphere.

Lights down York's city streets at Christmas

The centrepiece is, of course, the St. Nicholas Fair, but you don’t just have to visit the Christmas market to experience the festivities in York. They’re literally all around you, and simply wandering the streets can be a great way to experience it.

7. Listen to a Carol Concert in the York Minster

To embrace the perfect blend of Christmas spirit and music, head to a carol concert at the stunning York Minster. The carol concerts at York Minster are a great way to withness the spirit of Christmas in this historic cathedral.

As the sun sets and the grand interior of the Minster is bathed in candlelight. The soaring Gothic arches and exquisite stained glass windows create a breath-taking backdrop for the choir and congregation.

The historic York Minster is a great place to visit in York at Christmas

I really enjoy going to carol concerts because it always takes me back to when I was younger and I attended them in my local girl guides group!

8. See a Christmas Pantomime at the Theatre Royal York

You cannot beat a winter pantomime! I used to love going to see these when I was little and laughing at the drumroll jokes, men dressed in drag, and the endless chorus of ‘He’s behind you!’. It’s so much fun and a great way to embrace the Christmas spirit theatrically.

This year (2023) you can watch Jack and the Beanstalk at the York Royal Theatre. It’s showing between the 8th of December and the 7th of January.

9. Wander the Reindeer Trail at Kirkstall Abbey

Kirkstall Abbey is stunning and easily one of the best things to do near York. Although not actually located in York itself, this beautiful ruin is just an hour’s drive away in the neighbouring city of Leeds . The ruin makes the perfect festive day trip , plus you can stop in Leeds itself on the way!

Kirkstall abbey in Leeds

The Reindeer Trail is pretty much exactly what it seems. You’ll find a series of Reindeer scattered around the Abbey and your task is to find them all. It’s basically a winter scavenger hunt! It’s a completely free event. Although, if you’re not a resident of Leeds, you’ll have to pay for entry to the Abbey.

10. Explore Shambles

York’s most famous street, and inspiration for Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley, Shambles is one of the best things to do at Christmas in York. The picturesque street is full of crooked, half-timbered houses, cute shops and boutiques, and a great range of festive decorations.

The shambles at Christmas

There are so many shops down here that are themed around Harry Potter. For any die-hard fans (like me), you can wander in and out of potions shops, buy chocolate frogs, and Gryffindor jumpers, and generally have a great time!

11. Have a Christmas Afternoon Tea

Is there anything more classically British than an afternoon tea? And is there anything more festive than a Christmas-themed one? If you’re in York at Christmas, this is easily one of the best things you can do, and the perfect way to have a traditional English experience.

There are plenty of places to find a festive afternoon tea in York, but a few of my favourites include:

  • The Grand, York – located around the corner from the city’s famous Christmas markets, this is a great place for afternoon tea. Taste mince pies, sausage rolls, Christmas cocktails and more.
  • The Waterfront Cafe, York Marina – Their gorgeous afternoon tea includes delights like mulled wine-poached pear cheesecake and turkey and cranberry sandwiches, all washed down with sparkling champagne.
  • Plush Cafe, York – Offering a range of afternoon tea options including traditional, vegan, and children’s options, and a range of extras, this cafe is another of the delightful festive tea menus in York.
  • Castle Howard, Henderskelfe – Just 15 miles north of the city of York, this delicious afternoon tea is one of the best in Yorkshire. If you want to make a day of it, there are plenty of Christmas activities to participate in once you’ve finished your scones!

12. Experience York’s Chocolate Story

Chocoholics will absolutely love this and, I must say, it is definitely one of York’s best events.

Chocolate Story

Their Christmas activities involve chocolate making with Santa, a family-friendly Christmas workshop, a chocolate masterclass, and Christmas truffle rolling. You have to book each of these events individually and they do often sell out, so be quick if something has caught your eye.

This year, these events will be running from the 1st of December until the 26th of December 2023.

To book tickets to York’s Chocolate Story, click here.

13. Go Christmas Shopping

Can you honestly go to York at Christmas and not do a little bit of shopping? The city is the perfect place to explore the shopping centres and markets and grab a few last-minute gifts.

Shop decorated with Christmas decorations

Some of the best shopping centres in York include:

  • Coppergate Shopping Centre – where you’ll also find some fantastic Christmas lights
  • York Designer Outlet – a great place for discounted designer gear.
  • Vangarde Shopping Park – full of great shops and some fantastic places to eat
  • Monks Cross Shopping Centre – a slightly smaller shopping centre, but they do have a huge Primark!

Of course, you can also browse the Christmas markets and the smaller shops in the city centre. These are great for finding more unique gifts and handmade items that you won’t find in the larger stores.

14. Visit the Yorkshire Winter Wonderland

This is not technically in the city, however, I’d be lying if I said that this Winter Wonderland wasn’t one of the best Christmas attractions in Yorkshire. Home to the Ice Factor, one of the UK’s largest outdoor ice rinks (alongside those in Glasgow and London ), this event is a great day out for those wanting to fully embrace the Christmas spirit.

Located in York’s Designer Outlet, it’s about an 18-minute drive from the historic city centre. You’ll find a wide range of festive attractions, ice skating, rides, and activities. You can visit Santa’s Grotto, ride vintage Dodgems, and play hook-a-duck and a range of other classic funfair games. Once you’ve explored enough, you can explore the Christmas markets or grab a bite to eat in the chalet café.

Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland is free to enter but you have to buy tickets to participate in the attractions. In 2023, it’ll run from November 17th until the 7th of January.

15. Take a Day Trip to Leeds Christmas Markets

Last but not least, easily one of the top things to do at York at Christmas is to take a day trip to the neighbouring city of Leeds . Home to some of the best Christmas markets in England and the infamous German Christmas market – which is back for 2023!

Leeds Christmas market rides

This event , which was cancelled for a couple of years due to COVID restrictions, is now back and going to be bigger than ever. It’s one of the best German Christmas markets outside of Germany. You can explore over 120 Bavarian-style stalls, try traditional German cuisine (I highly recommend the gingerbread), and drink beer and gluhwein at one of 3 Christmas-themed outdoor bars.

There’s also a range of rides including the Ice Cube and the giant wheel. The markets will no longer just be contained to Millennium Square either – instead, they’re going to spread out all across the city. This year, Leeds at Christmas is going to be very exciting and well worth a visit from York.

Where to stay in York at Christmas

If you’re planning on visiting York at Christmas time for more than one day, which I highly recommend as there’s just so much to do here, you’re going to need somewhere to stay. York is a big city. But, they have accommodation options to suit a range of different budgets and travel types, from fancy hotels to self-catering apartments.

Here are some of the best places to stay in York for the Christmas period:

  • £££ – The Grand, York – This superb 5* hotel is located in York’s historic city centre. Elegantly furnished with spacious rooms, a luxury spa, a swimming pool, and an on-site restaurant and bar, you’ll find the perfect place to relax after a day of exploring the city. This is also one of the best places to have a festive afternoon tea!
  • ££ – The Lawrence Aparthotel – For those who like a taste of luxury but also enjoy their home comforts, this aparthotel is perfect for a winter visit to York. Each spacious apartment has a cosy living area, with a fully equipped kitchen and living room and a large, comfortable bed. There are only 3 apartments in the block, so you’ll get plenty of privacy, and the historic city centre is just a 10-minute walk away.
  • £ – Ibis York Centre – For a budget option, this simple yet comfortable hotel is perfect. You’ll get a fairly basic room, yet it still features a large bed, private bathroom, coffee station, and seating area. Plus, there’s parking on site, ideal if you drive to York.

How to Get Around York at Christmas

By far the easiest way I’ve found to get around York is to walk! The city centre is pretty compact and easy to get around and you don’t need to use transport to get between York’s top attractions.

Nonetheless, if you are staying outside of the city, then public transport is a pretty good way to get into the centre. There are bus stops all over the city and the buses are pretty easy to navigate. You can find the bus timetable here .

City streets

The closest airport to York is Leeds, so if you’re arriving by air, it’s a fairly quick 1-hour drive to the city centre. If you don’t drive, there’s no direct bus or train route to York from Leeds airport, so you have to make your way to Leeds city centre first. This can add time to your journey, but will give you an excuse to pop into Leeds’ German market!

However, it’s worth noting that, for some destinations outside of York city centre (like Castle Howard, and Winter Wonderland) they can be a little trickier to get to. In this case, you might want to consider driving or hiring a car . Driving in the UK is pretty simple and everything is well signposted. This will also give you the freedom to come and go as you please instead of being reliant on bus times.

Top Tips for Visiting York at Christmas

Hopefully, by now, you’re pretty convinced that Christmas in York is a pretty good idea. However, as with a lot of winter travel , a trip to York in winter may involve a little bit more planning than other times of the year.

The winter village

Here are a few of my top tips so you can make the most of Christmas in York:

  • Prepare for early sunsets. The sun usually starts to set at around 4 pm in December in the UK. So, if you have lots of things you want to do in York, it’s probably best to aim to start your day around 9 am.
  • Wrap up warm . It’s no secret that English weather can be a little unpredictable, especially in the winter months. I recommend bringing plenty of layers, a scarf, hat, gloves, and reliable waterproofs to avoid spending your days chilly and uncomfortable.
  • Plan ahead. York is a popular destination to visit during the winter months. If you don’t plan properly, you might end up not being able to do everything you’d like. Tickets can sell out way in advance so be sure to book instead of just turning up.
  • Sample local cuisine. Savour Yorkshire puddings, roast dinners, and other traditional British dishes at local pubs and restaurants. Don’t forget to try the mince pies and mulled wine.
  • Prepare for limited opening times . Be aware that some attractions and shops may have adjusted opening hours around Christmas and New Year. I recommend checking schedules in advance.

Final thoughts on Visiting York at Christmas

Overall, York is one of the most festive destinations to visit in the UK. The whole city comes alive with sparkles, lights, and decorations. I’ve been to York at Christmas several times. It’s a city I’m always going to keep coming back to at this time of year because it’s just so magical. So, if you’re planning on visiting anywhere in the UK in winter, I highly recommend a trip to York. You won’t be disappointed.

Where to see Santa in York this Christmas [2023]

Last Updated on 29 December 2023 by Colette Burgess

This post contains affiliate links

[I will continue to update this post with suggestions of where to visit Father Christmas in York in 2023 as information & reviews become available!]

I know it might feel a little early to be thinking about booking in a Santa visit but, with the best experiences booking up early, it pays to be prepared especially as I think there will be limited availability this year due to rollover bookings and people keen to make up for missed opportunities in recent years!

Looking ahead to Christmas still feels a little strange – we’ve all had our fingers burned when it comes to making plans and looking forward to things but I think, rather tentatively, we are all starting to look ahead to the festive season and, with fingers crossed, we just want to know there is something nice coming at the end of this rather challenging year!

As I child, I visited Father Christmas at the same garden centre in West Yorkshire year in, year out. I think there’s something rather special about picking somewhere and making a tradition of it – it helps to retain the magic and as such we only ever take our children to see Father Christmas at Stockeld Park.

Click through here for festive days out in York !

Girls with the Christmas elves at Stocked Park Christmas Adventure

If you haven’t decided where to take the kids to see Father Christmas yet this year, now is the time to make plans. There may be reduced capacity at festive events this Christmas and almost certainly increased demand and prices!

If you’re looking for places to visit Santa in the York area this Christmas, why not take a look at some of the suggestions below:

The Christmas Adventure at Stockeld Park – Saturday 18th November to Sunday 24th December 2023 | SOLD OUT

This is our personal favourite and as such I’m putting it first on the list – it’s not strictly in York but it’s definitely one of the best places to visit Father Christmas in Yorkshire!

Fans of a traditional Santa’s Grotto are in for a treat at Stockeld Park where a cosy, rustic wooden cabin, decked with twinkling lights, awaits Santa’s arrival from Lapland.

Stockeld Park’s famous adventure season includes The Snowflake Maze and Winter Illuminations in the award-winning Enchanted Forest.

Tickets must be booked online this year at www.stockeldpark.co.uk . Pricing at Stockeld Park has become increasingly complicated and expensive in recent years and has actually changed again since our visit last Christmas – when we first started going you could pay about £10 for each child to see Father Christmas and everything else was an add on – now everyone attending the park needs a ticket, which if you want to see Father Christmas, costs at least £20 per person but includes the Winter Illuminations etc. I recommend you check out their ticket guide to see exactly what each package offers before booking.

Bright, multicoloured paper stars, Christmas in York

York at Christmas – 2023

Are you planning on visiting York at Christmas 2023?

This essential guide to what’s on this Christmas in York will help you plan every detail of your trip and ensure you enjoy a festive, fun packed Christmas.

Christmas in York 2023 promises to be better than ever so, even if you were in York at Christmas 2022, there are new events and activities to discover this year.

From Christmas markets to festive sightseeing to family friendly pantomimes in York, there is something for everyone in York at Christmas.

Table of Contents

York Christmas Market 2023

If you are wondering are the Christmas markets in York on this year the answer is yes!

The City of York Christmas Market forms part of the six week long St Nicholas Fair. It is one of the biggest Christmas markets in Yorkshire and voted one of the best Christmas markets in the U.K.

The market consists of wooden alpine chalet market stalls which are mostly centred on pedestrianised Parliament Street. Plus, there are smaller pop-up markets on Coppergate and Lendal a few minutes walk away.

York Christmas Market is a free York attraction. Buskers, brass bands and carol singers create a festive atmosphere and help to entertain shoppers day and night.

The Christmas markets in York is a great location to pick up locally sourced, handmade gifts as well as locally produced food and drink.

You can try some delicious Yorkshire chocolate, locally grown Yorkshire wine or yummy Yorkshire gin. There stalls ranging from woollen clothes, glass ornaments, photography, wooden ornaments, light shades and sustainable kids toys including the popular tin steam boat. You can also find York and Yorkshire themed gifts as souvenirs of your trip.

Useful information

York Christmas market 2023 is open from Thursday 16th November to Friday 22rd December.

Stalls open around 10 am and close at 6 pm on weekdays or at 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

There are no toilets in the market but there are fee paying public toilets in the adjacent Shambles market. Free public toilets in York can be found on the third floor of Marks and Spencer’s on Parliament Street or on the first floor of Browns department store on St. Sampson’s Square at the top end of the market.

There are food and drink stalls in the market and lots of cafes and pubs in the surrounding area. Alternatively, pop into the Shambles Market adjacent to the Christmas market for street food and under cover seating.

Getting to York Christmas Market 2023

The main market is on Parliament Street which  is 1.4 kilometres or a 15-minute walk from York rail station. However, you can also catch the No.9 bus from outside York rail station which will drop you on Stonebow, a 2 minute walk from Parliament Street.

If you are driving to the market, fee paying parking is available nearby at Castle Car Park (adjacent to Clifford’s Tower) or St. Georges Field car park.

Alternatively, park at Monks Cross Park and Ride and catch the N0.9 Park and Ride bus which stops near the bottom of Parliament Street on Stonebow. Rawcliffe Park and Ride No. 2 bus will drop you off outside Museum Gardens from where it is a 5 minute walk to York Christmas Market.

Yorkie local tip- York Christmas Markets are very popular and Parliament Street gets very busy on the weekends running up to Christmas. Visit the market mid week if you can, or if you are visiting on the weekend, visit early or late to try avoid the mid-day crowds.

Shopping in York at Christmas

In addition to the Xmas markets York also offers other fantastic locations for Christmas shopping in York.

Visit a Christmas shop in York

The largest year round Christmas shop York has is the gorgeous Käthe Wohlfahrt on Stonegate. It is housed in the 15th century Mulberry Hall, one of the oldest buildings in York, and is the only Wohlfahrt outlet in Britain.

The two storey shop sells traditional Christmas decorations made in the family’s workshop in Germany. You will find German and Scandinavian style wooden and glass ornaments as well as York and U.K themed gifts.

It is a must visit if you are in York at Christmas as it is guaranteed to get you into the festive spirit. If you get lost looking for it, just as a local where the German Christmas shop York is.

Another option is ‘The Nutcracker’ Christmas shop on The Shambles.

This cute shop is a good place to pick up York and U.K themed decorations. It also has a wide selection of hobbies decorations.

The Shambles Market

Us Yorkies are proud our city centre Shambles Market. It sells everything from fish to fruit, jewellery, leather goods, hats, glass and wood work. Shopping here means shopping local and supporting local artisans.

Nestled in between the Christmas market on Parliament Street and the historic Shambles, The Shambles Market is a convivial place to shop, eat and drink. There are pop up street food stalls and a central covered area for communal dining.

Don’t miss the popular flower stall at the entrance to the market which is justifiably one of the most photographed locations in York.

A Yorkie local tip – For a great view of the Shambles Market and of York Minster, climb the stairs to the third floor of The Market Cat pub in The Shambles. The views from its large windows are some of the best in York.

Useful information

Käthe Wohlfahrt – 19, Stonegate, YO1 8ZW. Open everyday from 10 am to 6 pm (10.30am to 5.30 pm on Sundays).

The Nutcracker – 32 Shambles, YO1 7LX . Open every day from 10 am to 5 pm (and until 5.30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays).

The Shambles Market – 5 Silver Street, YO1 8RY. Open everyday from 9 am to 5 pm.

York City Centre shopping

If you are spending Christmas in York, I think the city’s pedestrianised streets make shopping easy and stress free.

In addition to the well known high street brands found on Coney Street and Parliament Street, I recommend the antiques and jewellers shops along Stonegate, the independent stores along Minster Gate and Petergate, or the quirky vintage stores along Fossgate.

Things to do in York at Christmas 2023

See york christmas lights .

2023 will see the best Christmas lights York has ever had. In fact, an estimated 160,000 lights will adorn our city brightening up the Yorkshire winter.

Check out the decorated and illuminated charity Christmas trees in Coppergate, at York Christmas market and in St Helen’s Square next to Betty’s Tea Rooms.

Furthermore, Coney Street, Parliament Street, The Shambles and Stonegate (which are all pedestrianised) have festive light displays, illuminated street garlands and lit Christmas trees.

Don’t the city’s festive window displays. My favourites are the Käthe Wohlfahrt Christmas shop on Stonegate and Betty’s Tea Rooms.

Monk Bar (at the entrance to Micklegate) is draped in silvery lights whilst the entrance to St Michael in the Belfrey next to York Minster is covered in a curtain of gold lights.

At the Eye of York in front of York Castle Museum is the magical Tree of Light which has an ever-changing light display.

Finally, in addition to all the Christmas lights in York,  visitors can also enjoy the usual illuminated York attractions.  Make sure you see York Minster and Clifford’s Tower which look amazing at night.

Don’t forget, if you are visiting York on a budget, wandering around looking at the Christmas lights and displays is totally free!

Attend a Christmas at York Minster event

I highly recommend attending a Christmas event at York Minster. It is a memorable and magical experience and most Yorkies I know try to visit the Minster at least once very Christmas.

Free events in York Minster at Christmas

For Christmas in York 2023, the Minster’s festive season starts with a candlelit advent service on 3rd December during which the Minsters’ famous and enormous advent wreath is hoisted above the altar.

On the 11th December there is another candlelit celebration for Sankta Lucia, the Swedish festival of light. Both of these services are free to attend.

One of the most popular free Christmas events in York is the ‘Nine Lessons and Carols’ services take place on December 22nd and December 24th. Each service lasts around 1.5 hours and are free to attend. However, you must book tickets in advance on the York Minster website.

Additionally, in 2023 York Minster is also hosting a Christmas Tree Festival from 2nd December to 5th January. Over 60 trees decorated by local school and charities will be on display inside the Minster in the nave, the Chapter House and Lady Chapel.

Entrance to the festival is included in the general York Minster admission fee.

Note that sightseeing of the Minster is not allowed immediately before, during or after services.

Ticketed Christmas events in York Minster

This year, there are Minster Carol Concerts are on Thursday 7th December and Friday 8th December.

These concerts include traditional carols sung by the Minster choir, brass band music and readings by famous actors. Tickets must be bought online in advance of the concert.

2023 also sees Carols by Candlelight, a family friendly production of ‘The Nutcracker’ and a concert in the nave by Jethro Tull. Full details and tickets available on the York Minster booking website.

There is no parking allowed at York Minster. The nearest fee paying parking is at Monk Gate or Mary Gate car park.

Alternatively, catch the No 2 Park and Ride which drops you at Museum Gardens which is a 5 minute walk from York Minster.

There are toilets and baby changing facilities inside York Minster.

If it is open, the York Minster shop has some gorgeous Christmas gifts to purchase.

Local Tip – If you are attending a free event at York Minster, seating is not allocated on your ticket. Arrive early if you want to get a good seat with a view. I also advise wrapping up warm (and wearing extra socks) as York Minster can get cold in winter!

York historic houses

The historic houses in York put on special themed events each Christmas.

The National Trust owned Treasurer’s House is behind York Minster has a 2023 theme of ‘Gifts From Afar.’ This quirky house will be decorated with ornaments from the eclectic collection of Frank Green who was once the owner of Treasurers House.

The Georgian era Fairfax House on Coppergate is known for its elaborate Christmas displays. In 2023, the theme is inspired by the ‘Night before Christmas’ poem and visitors have to spot as many hidden mice as possible whilst touring the decorated house.

Useful Information

Tickets for these historic houses need to be booked online in advance of your visit.

The nearest car park to the Treasurer’s House is Marygate car park and the nearest park and ride is the No 2 from Rawcliffe. Fairfax House is just metres away from Clifford’s Tower car park or you could use the No 7 Park and Ride bus which stops near Clifford’s Tower.

Both houses have toilets and gift shops.

However, these old houses have steps and stairs so are not suitable for buggies or anyone with mobility issues. If you have access needs, I recommend contacting the house in advance to see how they can help.

Treasurer’s House ‘Gifts from Afar’ is open from 13th November to 17th December from Saturday to Wednesday. Open from 11 am to 4 pm with last admission at 3.15 pm.

Fairfax House town mice take over from 11th November to 7th January. Children under 16 are free with a paying adult.

A Yorkie local tip – Don’t miss the chance to indulge in a scone at the Treasurer’s House. They are the best in York and were recently voted the best scone out of all of the National Trust properties in the U.K! This Christmas, the house is also offering a Christmas pudding flavoured scone.

Make your own Christmas chocolate at York Chocolate Story

Did you know that York has a long history of chocolate making? The city was once home to Rowntree’s and Terry’s and there is still a Nestle factory producing chocolate today.

You can learn all about the history of chocolate – and York’s long chocolate history – at the excellent York Chocolate Story which offers family friendly tours daily.

If you are in York at Christmas, you can also join one of the museum’s popular chocolate masterclasses. This year, workshops include Chocolate Making With Santa, Truffle Rolling, and Family Workshops. Workshop and general admission tickets should be booked online in advance here.

Take a Christmas themed walking tour

In addition to the year round walking tours in York, at Christmas you can join a special festive themed walking tour.

This 90-minute walking tour visits key sites in the city and you will also learn about the history and traditions of Christmas in York.

Tours run nightly from November 19th (whatever the weather) so wrap up warm! Book online here in advance. Tickets cost £12 for adults and just £5 for children.

If you are looking for ideas of things to do in York, check out my essential guide to York here.

Find The Nutcrackers!

2023 sees the return of The Nutcracker Trail when 10 individually designed and decorated Nutcrackers are placed around the city.

Pick up a Nutcracker Trail map from the Visit York Information Centre on Parliament Street. Each Nutcracker has a name so finding a Nutcracker finds a name. Once you have the names of all 10 nutcrackers, drop off your leaflet at Visit York Information Centre of post it in Santa’s post box in Museum Gardens.

All entries will be entered into a draw to win a £250 York Gift Card. Plus, if you discover the link between all of the nutcracker names, you could win your own miniature nutcracker.

The Nutcracker Trail is free and runs from November 16th until January 4th.

Entertainment in York at Christmas

Watch a york theatre panto .

A Christmas pantomime is a British tradition. A York panto is fun, raucous and over the top but we love it and go to watch a pantomime in York at Christmas every year.

For my non British readers, pantos in York are a comedic singing and dancing show loosely based on a traditional fairy tale. Audience participation is encouraged at a York panto – and the louder the better!

Be prepared to boo, hiss, cheer and stand up to sing and dance. If you like old fashioned elaborate theatres with stalls, circles and boxes you will love the Grand Opera House.

This year, The Grand Opera House York panto is ‘Robinson Crusoe and The Pirates of the River Ouse’ from December 9th to January 6th.

It stars Berwick Kaler, who has been performing in pantomimes in York for over 40 years. Tickets can be bought online in advance or from the GOH box office on Cumberland Street, YO1 9SW.

The York Theatre Royal panto is ‘Jack and The Beanstalk’ which runs from 8th December to 7th January. Book your tickets here.

Pantomimes run every night with additional matinee performances on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

A York pantomime lasts around 2.5 hours with an interval in the middle of the show. Performances accompanied by sign language are available.

Tickets start from £13 though you can expect to pay up to £75+ for the best front row seats.

Neither theatre has car parking on site. The Grand Opera House is approximately 20 minutes on foot from York rail station and its nearest car park is Clifford’s Tower.

The nearest car park to York Theatre Royal is Marygate. Both theatres are close to Park and Ride stops.

My local tip – Book your tickets in advance as pantos tend to sell out quickly.

Watch a Christmas movie in a York cinema

There are two cinemas in York which show Christmas movies in the run up to Christmas and on Christmas Eve. This is a good option for weary shoppers or if York winter weather is poor.

Everyman York on Blossom Street has comfy sofas and armchairs plus you can get food and drink delivered to your seat.In the heart of York city centre.

The Picturehouse on Coney Street has multiple screens and a great cafe. Annual festive screenings include ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, and ‘The Polar Express’ and of course, that Christmas classic, ‘Die Hard.’

Or, for something a little different, on the 8th December, York Barbican are showing ’ The Muppets Christmas Carol’ accompanied by a live orchestra.

Sing your heart out at a carol concert

Finally, it wouldn’t be Christmas without a carol concert so Christmas sing a long is a ‘must do’ in you are in York at Christmas.

The York Community Carol Concert is favourite with us Yorkies. It takes place at York Barbican on December 17th and has been running for over 60 years.

It is a mix of solo musicians, big bands and local school choirs and is guaranteed to get you into the festive spirit.I highly recommend it especially if you are visiting York from overseas and want to enjoy Christmas in York like a local.

Don’t forget there are also the free carol concerts offered by York Minster.

Visiting York at Christmas with kids

Visit santa in his grotto .

Kids can meet Santa at several York city centre locations. Most visits require pre- booking but there is a cosy wooden chalet for drop in visits on Coppergate near Jorvik Viking Centre.

There are pre-bookable Santa meet and greets at York Castle Museum, York Chocolate Story and the medieval Barley Hall. Admission fees apply to these attractions in addition to Santa’s grotto.

Instead, why not visit Santa on a festive cruise whilst touring the River Ouse on City Cruise’s Santa Experiences. The experience includes a 1 hour cruise, a meet and greet with Santa plus a personalised present and goody bag for kids.

Children and adults receive a drink and biscuit or mince pie.The Santa Experience is so popular that many York families return year after year so pre-booking is essential.

Go ice skating at Yorkshire Winter Wonderland

The Yorkshire Winter Wonderland at MacArthur Glen shopping centre on the outskirts of York features an open-air ice rink which is the largest in the U.K.

This ice rink is made from real ice and is centred around an enormous Christmas tree. There is a warm, enclosed marquee with a cafe and viewing areas plus a separate marquee for skate hire.

There are parent and toddler sessions available daily which are a great option for young skaters as the skater numbers are limited. Very young skaters can use penguin shaped stabilizers.

At night, skating around the illuminated Christmas tree is fun and magical. We go every year with our kids – though we never seem to get better at ice skating?!

Yorkshire Winter Wonderland is a short 10 minute drive from York City centre (traffic dependent). There is lots of free parking available on site.

If you don’t have a car, catch the No. 7 bus from York city centre which stops outside the shopping centre. Up to 3 kids under 16 are free on Park and Ride buses in York with a paying adult.

You can read my guide to York’s Park and Ride scheme here.

York Minster Crib Service

Families with very young children can attend the Crib Service on December 23rd . Your children can dress up as nativity characters (including animals) and go onto the altar when their ‘part’ is mentioned in the Christmas stories. Kids and adults will love it!

Any and all costumes are welcomed at this service as we have seen Iron Man and Spiderman in the nativity tableau!

Due to the popularity of this event, you must pre book free tickets in advance on the York Minster website.

Queues form early for the free crib service so arrive early to get a seat. There are no food facilities in York Minster but there are ample toilet facilities including a changing table.

Where to eat and drink at Christmas in York

Thor’s tipi .

Thor’s Tipi is specially erected for the festive period. The enormous canvas tipi serves hot drinks such as hot chocolate and coffee or alcohol (including mulled wine and cocktails).

It attracts weary daytime shoppers as well as night time party goers. There are sheepskin lined benches centred around an open fire which creates a communal, convivial atmosphere.

Our kids love our annual trip to Thor’s Tipi for a mouth-watering hot chocolate.

For 2023, Thor’s Tipi has moved to a new home in Museum Gardens. This year it will include two giant tents, live music with local bands plus food by Yuzu Street Food and Ciao.

Thors Tipi York is in Museum Gardens, on Museum Street YO1 7FR.

It is open from November 15th to December 31st. Opening times are Monday to Wednesday 12 pm – 9 pm, Thursday to Saturday 12 pm – 10.30 pm. On Sundays the tipi is open from 12 pm – 8 pm.

Indulge in a festive afternoon tea in York

York is renowned for its fabulous afternoon teas and I think Christmas themed teas are even better.

My top festive afternoon teas in York include Betty’s Tea Room , a York institution that will take you back in time with china crockery, a classical pianist and uniformed waiting staff.

The food is delicious and although pricey at £39.95 per person, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

The Grand Hotel (York’s only five-star hotel) offers family friendly festive teas from the 16th November – 31st December. Each festive themed afternoon tea comes with a festive cocktail.

Prices start from £49.95 per adult and The Grand also offers children’s festive teas.

The Principal Hotel next to York rail station serves a chocolate inspired afternoon tea in their elegant Garden Room. Prices start from £29 per person.

Cosy up in an igloo

The Churchill Hotel near Bootham Bar is a 10 minute walk from York city centre.

It is a Grade II listed Georgian mansion with a pretty front garden which is transformed into a winter wonderland with open fires and illuminated igloos.

Visitors can pre-book an igloo for drinks or dinner over the festive period for a cosy and private way to dine. Pre-booking is essential here.

Christmas Dinner in York

Wherever you eat Christmas dinner in York you can expect it to be accompanied by a Yorkshire pudding. We like to do things differently here!

Several city centre pubs and hotels offer Christmas Day dinner in York. You can expect to pay between £60 and  £200 per person for a 3 or 4 course dinner.

Check out my comprehensive guide to Christmas dinner in York here which includes options for every budget.

Christmas Drinks in York

I always recommend a visit to ‘The House Of Trembling Madness’ on Stonegate at Christmas. I love its convivial atmosphere and communal seating.  You will get into the festive spirit and to make new friends.

For a great view of the City of York at Christmas, head to the rooftop Sora Bar at the Malmaison Hotel. They have heaters and blankets to help you brave the chilly York nights.

Alternatively, any of the traditional style York city centre pubs will offer a cosy retreat from winter weather. My top picks to visit at Christmas include Guy Fawkes Inn, Ye Olde Starre Inn and The Fat Badger.

York at Christmas – final thoughts

A trip to York at Christmas 2023 is guaranteed to offer lots of fun, festive activities for every age, interest and budget.

If you are staying in York for several days, read my guide to all the fabulous festive day trips from York you can take. Options include themed parks, historic estates or visiting other Christmas markets in Yorkshire.

York at Christmas 2023 will be bigger, better and more magical than ever. I think that a York Christmas will be a Christmas you remember.

Festive Places to Visit Santa in York

santa visits in york

For parents today, taking their children to meet Santa is somewhat removed from the shopping centre grottos of yesteryear, and York is aiming to secure its reputation as the most festive city in the UK by offering the most remarkable Santa experiences in the country – from sweet adventures with the great man to magical encounters on a steam train.  Also have a look at what else is happening in York at Christmas , and while you are here, pick up some lovely things from York Christmas Market.

“Christmas is the most magical time of the year, and for a generation brought up on a world of mobile gaming and tablet computers, anyone wishing to experience that kind of magic in the real life  has a huge challenge,” comments head of marketing and communications at Visit York, Paul Whiting. “York has risen to this challenge in remarkable fashion, with attractions throughout the city and beyond devising the most incredible set of Santa encounters anywhere in the country – creating fairytale fantasy visits with the great man that children will remember their whole lives.”

what to do in york at Christmas text over image of the Mansion House after dark, lit up

I visit York every year during the festive period, and I’ve discovered the best things to do in York at Christmas – with kids, as a couple and as a solo traveller.

Regularly voted one of the top places to visit in Britain, York is an ancient walled city in northern England, located halfway between London and Edinburgh. It’s one of my favourite cities all year around, but there’s an extra dusting of magic to York at Christmas.

Trinkets for sale at St Nicholas Christmas Market, York

York has Christmas experiences to delight every visitor, from entertaining shows and marvellous markets to splendid shopping and fantastic food.

16 Wonderful Things to Do in York at Christmas

York is a fabulous city to explore, with both Roman and Viking roots and plenty of evidence of both around the city.

Many of the city’s street names come from the Vikings: they usually end in the word ‘gate’ – from the Old Norse word ‘gata’, which means ‘street’.

‘Castlegate’, for example, is the street leading up to the castle and ‘Swinegate’ is where the pigs were kept.

The York City Pass is the best way to save money on things to do in York. It allows you to see multiple tourist attractions at a substantial discount to separate admission charges.

Are you ready to explore York at Christmas? After all, it has just been voted one of the top five Christmas markets around the world!

1. Take a Guided Walk Around the City

If you’re new to York or unfamiliar with the city, a Christmas Walking Tour is one of the best ways to orient yourself and discover some of York’s best-loved festive attractions.

Try a Guided Bike Tour of York if you fancy something a little more active.

2. Browse The York Christmas Markets

St Nicholas Christmas Market, York

One of the best things to do in York at Christmas is browse the city’s Christmas markets, where the smells of street food and mulled wine waft tantalisingly in the air as the bright lights of the stalls draw you closer.

St Nicholas Market

St Nicholas Christmas Market on Parliament Street (or St Nicholas’s Fair) has been part of Christmas in York since 1992.

The traditional wooden stalls host over 100 vendors selling a wide variety of handmade arts and crafts, personalised gifts, homeware, Christmassy food and drink. There’s always a cart selling roasted chestnuts, an ice rink, a carousel, and a Santa visit.

Taking a ride on the carousel is one of the most fun things to do in York at Christmas.

Although the market is less crowded in the daytime, the most atmospheric time to visit is early evening. It’s busier, but the experience is magical when night falls, and the cabins light up.

The Shambles Market

The medieval Shambles market in York

The narrow medieval cobbled street known as the Shambles has a regular market throughout the year. At Christmas, the Shambles is transformed into a glorious wonderland of twinkling lights and eye-catching decorations.

Make sure to visit the flower stall at the entrance to the Shambles, where you can pick up small Christmas trees, poinsettias, and flowers for your Christmas arrangements.

3. Refuel at Thor’s Tipi

Thor’s Tipi is a Viking-style tent open daily on Parliament Street, from 10 am until 11 pm each Christmas. It’s a lively spot for a hot beverage or one of the speciality local ales and stouts.

On chilly days, I can recommend sitting by the traditional Viking fire pit, warming warm your hands and sipping mulled wine or hot chocolate.

Thor’s is extremely popular, so you’ll probably have to queue for drinks at the bar, but there’s always space by the Viking fire pit.

4. Buy Exquisite Decorations In York’s Christmas Shops

Buy a nutcracker soldier for Christmas in York

York is obsessed with Christmas and has two Christmas shops that are busy all year round. One of the most popular things to do in York for Christmas is to buy new festive decorations for your tree or home.

The  Nutcracker Christmas Shop , halfway along the Shambles, has a life-size nutcracker soldier by its doorstep and is a cornucopia of Christmas tree decorations, candles, lights, and many nutcrackers!

Kaethe Wohlfahrt - the traditional German Christmas shop in York

In nearby Stonegate,  Kaethe Wohlfahrt   is a traditional German Christmas shop packed with exquisite Christmas items, including beautiful nativity sets and an incredible array of shiny baubles.

There’s also a whole floor dedicated to intricately carved cuckoo clocks.

Kaethe Wohlfahrt is the place to shop in York if you’re looking for a statement piece or an heirloom item for Christmas.

5. Join A Mesmerising York Minster Carol Service

Beautiful York Minster

York Minster  is the awe-inspiring 7th-century cathedral in the centre of York. On selected dates in December, you can attend spell-binding Christmas carol services sung by the choir of York Minster.

Listen to the 14 great bells in the South Tower ring out as you enter the building, sing carols along with the congregation, and listen to timeless readings of the Christmas story in this vast and beautiful sacred space.

Visiting York Minster is one of the best things to do in york at christmas

Don’t forget to look up to see the spectacular three-metre-wide Advent wreath suspended in the Minster’s Central Tower.

All the Christmas services at York Minster are ticketed and unbelievably popular, so you MUST book early . Tickets sell out like hotcakes!

6 . The York Minster Christmas Tree Festival

The Minster’s Christmas Tree Festival is set within the grounds of the cathedral, with around 40 beautiful trees decorated by local businesses, schools and charities.

Visitors vote for their favourite tree in the ‘best-dressed’ tree competition. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged.

Event dates: Mid-November to early January, 10 am – 7 pm

7 . The Winter Village at York Minster

New for York at Christmas 2022, the Winter Village at York Minster ‘s Great South Door will feature decorative wooden cabins offering food, drinks, gifts and seating with perfect views of the Minster.

8. Enjoy The Winter Lights In York At Christmas

Christmas lights in the City of York

The festive lights switch-on in the city centre is a popular event, and York’s Winter lights are truly spectacular.

Known as Winter Lights rather than Christmas lights, York’s illuminations brighten up the city from mid-November until the end of February, so you may be able to enjoy the lights even if you’re not able to visit York  for Christmas.

Mickelgate Bar, York in Winter

York’s city walls have four ‘bars’ ( Bootham Bar, Micklegate Bar, Monk Bar, and Walmgate Bar ) These original entrances or gatehouses into the old walled city are draped in twinkling white lights in the winter, looking like sparkling chainmail.

The narrow city lanes are strung with lights, while the main squares and shopping streets blaze from the ornate designs hanging between the buildings.

York City Street

Outside the Minster and nearby St Michael le Belfrey, the trees are adorned with lights, while the Magical Tree of Light outside the York Castle Museum is wrapped in 1km of lights.

9. Experience A Medieval Christmas At Barley Hall

Visiting  Barley Hall  is a treat when visiting York at Christmas. This medieval townhouse in the middle of York was completely refurbished in the 1990s to demonstrate what life was like in medieval York.

Book a  St Nicholas Christmas Feast  for the chance to eat as people did in the Middle Ages!

10. Have a Sparkly Tipple at Yorkshire Gin

Christmas Gin

If spending a couple of hours sampling award-winning gins in a 17th-century historic building sounds like your thing, book a gin-tasting evening class with the gin experts at York Gin . Alternatively, opt for a boozy York Gin Afternoon Tea .

11. Visit Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland

Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland at the York Designer Outlet runs from November to early January each year, with the largest outdoor ice rink in the North of England and an incredible 30ft high Christmas tree.

Next to the ice rink, an alpine-themed café serves tasty snacks and mulled wine. There’s also a vintage funfair with exciting rides and Santa’s log cabin. After visiting Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland, drop into the York Designer Outlet for those last-minute gifts!

12. Watch The Snowman In York Minster

York Minster is one of the most unique places to see the family-favourite movie – The Snowman , especially as a live orchestra accompanies it with some of the UK’s finest musicians.

You can also enjoy the sensational new Shaun the Sheep film The Flight Before Christmas , staged with a live orchestra for the first time. Book tickets for reserved seats in the central nave here.

Event date: Saturday, the 10th of December 2022, at 2.30 pm and 7.30 pm .

13. Experience A Pantomime

Going to the pantomime (or ‘panto’) is a British institution, and the two theatres in York put on a great show every year. Going to the pantomime is the perfect evening entertainment to wrap up a festive day exploring York.

For Christmas 2022, the pantomimes you can book tickets for are:

Grand Opera House York : ‘ Old Granny Goose ‘ will run from the 10th of December until the 8th of January 2023.

Theatre Royal York : The ‘ All New Adventures of Peter Pan ‘ will run from the 2nd of December to the 2nd of January 2023

14. Experience a Fairytale Christmas at Castle Howard

Beautiful Castle Howard, Yorkshire

For Christmas 2022, Castle Howard’s grand rooms will be transformed into magical forests and faraway kingdoms, with the sound of glass slippers on ballroom floors and the echoes of horse-drawn pumpkins.

Grown-up visitors will enjoy shopping for stylish, unique gifts, delicious local produce, and British-grown Christmas trees, while children can meet Santa in the main house.

Top Tip : Stop for a festive afternoon tea, take in the magical surroundings with a glass of mulled wine after dark, and then enjoy the winter light displays and twinkling Christmas trees.

Admission to Castle Howard is included with the 2/3 day York City Pass ; however, you must pre-book your visit over Christmas.

15. The Gingerbread House

Mansion House in St Helen's Square, York at Christmas

Since Christmas 2019, the 18th-century official residence of the Lord Mayor of York – the Mansion House – has hosted an event called ‘The Gingerbread House’, with a gingerbread trail, dressing-up box, mulled wine and gingerbread treats.

Tickets to the Mansion House include the Gingerbread House experience; these can be booked online in advance or upon arrival. However, the most budget-friendly way to see this attraction is with the York City Pass .

16. National Railway Museum’s Santa’s Steam Adventure

Santa’s Steam Adventure at the fabulous (and free) National Railway Museum is during the festive period. This interactive story takes place on a journey to the North Yorkshire Pole to ensure Santa receives his postbag in time for Christmas.

Top Tip: While visiting York at Christmas will be cold, it’s a beautiful, historic city with festivities to enjoy day and night. Wrap up well with a warm coat, woolly hat and sturdy flat-heeled boots (cobbled streets!), then let York work its magic on you.

Where to Stay in York

If you’re planning to stay in York for a day or longer (you should), staying in the city centre is the best way to get a proper feel for this beautiful city.

We recommend the following hotels in York:

The Grand Hotel, York : A 5-star hotel located in a historic building, moments from the centre of York. With a luxury vaulted spa, exceptional restaurant, and stylish bedrooms with extra-comfy beds. Check availability at the Grand Hotel here .

The Dean Court : Located just 200 yards from York Minster, this lovely hotel offers private parking (a huge luxury in York), a breakfast room with views of the Minster, and sumptuous guest rooms. A real find! Check availability at the Dean Court here .

Final Thoughts – Things to Do in York at Christmas

There are many things to do in York at Christmas, from the York Christmas Market to the historic buildings, York Minster and incredible places to eat. You could easily spend a week in the city and not see everything. If you have the luxury of time, do plan a multi-day visit!

Pro Tip: If it’s your first trip to York, the winding, narrow maze of city centre streets and their names – like Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma Gate 🙂 – might be confusing. Download a city map before you visit York or pick one up from the tourist information office at 1 Museum Street when you arrive.

Christmas in York - 12 magical things to do in York this festive season

Running from the 26th of November until the 23rd of December, this bustling market is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the true magic of Christmas in York.

The York Christmas market gets busy, so I would advise against going at peak times. I once went on a Saturday, in mid-December, and it was shoulder-to-shoulder with people. I’d recommend going early in the week, first thing. I went one Tuesday morning in November and it was a delight!

How dare you get me excited for Christmas in MAY! Sounds like there’s loadsss to do in York around Christmas. I love a Christmas market (even though they’re pretty much all the same haha!) I definitely want to do more Christmassy things in Lincolnshire this year as I’d have moved by then and want to really embrace Christmas in a new place x

York really does look beautiful at Christmas, I can’t even begin to think about Christmas yet though! x

Lucy | http://www.lucymary.co.uk

Your post on Christmas activities in York is enchanting! You’ve captured the festive spirit and offered wonderful suggestions. Thanks for spreading the holiday joy!

These are great things to do. If we spend Christmas in York, I will make sure to try some of these with my partner. Thank you for sharing!

I LOVE York at Christmas! And I’m so happy to be getting excited about it already. Might have to get something booked in.

I don’t live in the UK but these truly sound magical! So many options I would like to visit but the Swiss dining experience caught my eye. Christmas is my favorite holiday. I have in laws that live in the UK so maybe it’s time to plan a family trip thank you for sharing!

I love York at Christmas time – but then again, I love it at any time of the year! When I was at Uni we went to the Minster for a carol service which was lovely, and we used to have drinks in Thor’s at the markets 🙂

I’ll be planning a long trip to York once Jack is a bit older – having read this, I may have to plan it on the run up to Christmas because there is just SO much magic! Rosie

What a lot of great looking activities!

No, not Christmas already! (I work in book retail, so I dread the sound.)

But also, I am definitely going to be in York this coming holiday season, so this list is actually quite excellent (even if I don’t want to think that far ahead). Thanks for sharing!

Oooh you’re early with the Christmas content! Haha. I love York at Christmas time though – It feels extra magical! We’ll definitely be visiting this year. X

Where to see Father Christmas in York this year.

9 of The Most Magical Santa Experiences in Yorkshire (2022)

  • By Alexis Wilson-Barrett

santa experiences in yorkshire

For many of us, Christmas is the most enjoyable time of year. However, no matter how much one loves the festive season, Christmas as an adult is incomparable to Christmas as a child. Innocent minds and young imaginations revel in the magic of this time of year and despite how commercialised we may think Christmas has become, it is children who make this time of year more special than any other. Even if we cannot regain those feelings and emotions we experienced during our own childhoods, witnessing the wonder and excitement on our children’s and grandchildren’s faces at Christmas is a true blessing.

For those wanting to make magical memories with their little ones, Yorkshire offers plenty of opportunities to do so. For kids, it’s all about the jolly old man in the bright red suit and each and every town and city across the county will be offering encounters of some kind or another.

We’ve put together a list of the most magical Santa experiences in Yorkshire that will help you create some lasting memories of the most wonderful time of the year. Each includes excellent entertainment, an enchanting atmosphere and of course…a meeting with St Nick!

A wonderful, theatrical event that the whole family will adore and likely, never forget. Where: Stockeld Park, Wetherby LS22 4AN When: November 19th 2022 – December 24th 2022 Price: £13 pp for Santa’s Grotto

What better location for an encounter with Santa than an enchanted forest adorned with dazzling lights and bursting with play opportunities? Each year, this popular tourist attraction transforms into a Winter wonderland complete with a fun family ice rink, and snowflake maze comprising endless wintery twists and turns.

This year, Santa will arrive at Stockeld Park on 19th November with a glittering parade through the magnificent Enchanted Forest. After that, he will take up residence in his forest grotto ready to meet and greet excited children. Tickets for the grotto visit can be purchased for £13 but are only available when booked alongside a forest & maze or illuminations-only ticket. This is by far one of the most popular Santa experiences in Yorkshire so we recommend booking well in advance to avoid missing out.

Dining with Santa at Carlton Towers

Carlton Towers is a historic stately home near Goole boasting grand architecture, breathtaking interiors and beautiful grounds; the perfect setting for a memorable festive day out. This year, there are two fabulous experiences on offer – Brunch with Santa and Sunday Lunch with Santa.

Priced at £30 for adults and £20 for children, Brunch with Santa is available on the mornings of 23rd and 24th December. The price includes a one-course brunch in one of their beautifully decorated festive staterooms and a fireside visit to Santa. Brunch options include a Full English, Smoked Chicken Benedict, Pancakes with Maple Syrup and Bacon plus many more. All are served with additional pastries and toast plus a glass of Bucks Fizz for the grown-ups.

Santa Sunday Lunch is available on the 4th, 11th and 18th of December. This one costs slightly more at £45 for adults and £25 per child but you get three delicious courses plus the all-important fireside time with Santa who will present each child with a special gift.

With roaring log fires, 20ft high Christmas trees and stunning surroundings, this is certainly one the adults will love as much as the kids!

Father Christmas at Bolton Abbey

Santa experiences in Yorkshire

Where: Bolton Abbey, Skipton, North Yorkshire BD23 6EX When: November 26th to December 22nd Prices: 26/27 November – £25, 3/4/10/11 December – £28, 17/18/19/20/21/22 December £32 (Prices per child – all children visiting Santa must have tickets including babies) Tickets for accompanying adults and older children are £10 each.

Father Christmas will be returning to the picturesque Bolton Abbey near Skipton at the end of November and is set to stay until 22nd December. Enter Strid Wood to discover a charming Christmas village where elves await to take you on an enchanting journey to meet Father Christmas. This is another Santa experience in Yorkshire offering much more than a quick grotto encounter. The location is stunning and they do a tremendous job transforming Strid Wood into a magical wonderland.

The price varies depending on the date and includes two craft activities and a musical activity, which the children will do with the cheeky elves before they visit Santa to get their gifts. The Christmas Village experience is exclusive to ticket holders so if you want to visit you definitely need to book. Parking is in the Riverside car park and the village is a 15-minute walk away. Although there will be some shelters available, most of this is entirely outdoors so wrap up warm and wear comfy shoes!

Santa Underground at National Coal Mining Museum

santa experiences in Yorkshire

Where: Caphouse Colliery, New Road, Overton, Wakefield WF4 4RH When: November 26th – December 24th 2022 Prices: Children £10, Adults £8 plus £2 booking fee and VAT (Please note that ticket prices are priced £1 higher for visits on Christmas Eve)

A more unusual Santa experience in Yorkshire is on offer at one of the best museums in Yorkshire , the National Coal Mining Museum near Wakefield. From November 26th to December 24th, Santa will be 140m underground in a unique and atmospheric grotto. One of the more budget-friendly Santa experiences in Yorkshire, this one is priced at just £10 per child which we think is really reasonable. Travel underground with your children and see whether or not the special bell will place your little ones on the nice list. Those on the list will receive a gift from Santa but those troublesome little monkeys who find themselves on the naughty list will receive a lump of coal instead. It sounds rather brutal but it’s all a bit of humourous fun and no child will leave disappointed!

Santa Sundays at Alexander’s, Skipton

santa visits in york

Where: 4-6 High Street, Skipton BD23 1JZ When: Every Sunday in December and plus every day from 19th December to 24th December Prices: £15.00 per child OR £170 for the full family package with Off Piste dining experience (£36 per extra child under 14, £52 per additional adult)

Foodies will love this Santa experience in Yorkshire! As a resident of Skipton, I have dined at Alexander’s on numerous occasions. This wonderful venue boasts elegant interiors, a large contemporary terrace area overlooking the Leeds-Liverpool Canal and a range of wonderful dining options including one of the best afternoon teas in Skipton . Each year, Alexander’s installs a delightful pop-up Alpine lodge on the bottom section of their terrace and it’s absolutely wonderful! I visited the very first year and have lasting memories of the festive ambience and fabulous food.

This year, families of four ( 2 adults and 2 children) can combine the Alpine Lodge experience with a magical visit from Santa on each Sunday in December and every day from the 19th until the 24th. Cosy up in their heated lodge, tuck into a variety of indulgent dishes, enjoy craft activities and await your very special visit from Santa. The menu sounds absolutely superb! Flame-grilled Frankfurters, Braised Short Rib Mac N Cheese, Alpine Pizza, Roast Parsnip Soup, Chocolate Fondue plus many more will be served to your group to help you celebrate the start of the festive season in the most delicious way.

The full experience costs £170 for four people but additional group members may be added. Individual visits to Santa can also be booked by those who don’t want to book the full Alpine Lodge experience. For this, it’s £15 per child and each will receive a gift.
