Periphery was FANTASTIC. They're sound quality and skill was f$&#@in' ON POINT. Everything was tuned beautifully and they just really have it their all. They have a great stage presence too, not missing a beat while guitarists are goofing off all over the stage- it was an all around great time. They were touring with Veil of Maya which they are apparently friends with, so there was great support for both groups and on Maya's last set Spencer of Periphery got on stage and screamed a few lines along with them. It was amazing! My husband has loved these guys for years and I always thought they were good, but it wasn't really my jam- after this concert I'm definitely a fan.

What a great show! Very technically good as far as sound and accuracy, which is very impressive for how precise the guitar parts are and the fact that there are three guitarists. The crowd was nuts, knew all the words! A good bit of push moshing, but nothing super aggressive. Most people were actually enjoying the show.

Periphery Guitarist Misha Mansoor on Why He Loves Playing in Australia, the Term ‘Prog’ + Dream Theater

Modern prog metal masters Periphery are headed down under to tour Australia as you read this. Right before they headed out though, Noisecreep had a chance to chat with founding member, guitarist Misha Mansoor.

He was excited about the trip and the chance to head down and play in support of last year's well-received album, Periphery II: This Time It's Personal.

Mansoor also couldn't resist talking about Dream Theater shredder John Petrucci , his biggest influence. That's perfectly fine with Noisecreep, because we always like talking about Petrucci, too.

Misha, you leave in just a couple of days for Australia. You must be excited?

Absolutely. I have to say, the fans in Australia really get it. The sort of music we do can sometimes require a little more patience and that's something the folks down there really seem to understand. I'm not sure why, but there is one theory we have. We tend to do well in cities and Australia is so big but the people are concentrated in the thin strips of coastal towns where you've got all these small to midsize cities - not so much small towns. Maybe that has something to do with it, but regardless, we just love playing down there.

What do you think about how the term "prog" has been defined and redefined in the last few years?

Well the term "prog" has never really bothered me. The way we define it, is it is just a credo for us to do whatever we want to do. We could do a song as long as we want, however we want to do it and as melodic or atonal as we want. So prog for us really just means the ability to create whatever we feel like creating in that moment.

Watch 'Make Total Destroy' Video

At what age did you first start becoming aware of modern music?

I would say at about age 13 or 14 is when I began to discover what I would consider modern music. It was all about Nirvana , the Offspring and Green Day . Then shortly after that I discovered Incubus , Tool and Deftones . Deftones, to me, were really a big deal and still are and I'm excited we have an upcoming tour with them.

And then of course at some point you discovered Dream Theater.

Yes, I did, and I've never quite gotten over them. What really did it for me is when we toured with them and I could watch them during sound check. They are just insanely talented guys. The sweetest dudes you'll ever meet but truly scary to watch even when they're just fooling around. When you have a band where all the guys have literally mastered their instruments, it can only be an inspiration to you.

John Petrucci, in particular, has played a part in your evolution as a player yourself, right? We all know he did a guest solo on the Periphery song, 'Erised.'

He has. John has always impressed me. I was never into shredders, you know, turning music into a sport. But John does things in just such a tasteful way. He plays the right notes at the right time and that's the most important lesson I've ever learned from him. There's always a right note at the right time. He said he likes my playing and I have a hard time processing that because I think what I do is so boring compared to him. I'd watch him on tour, how he would practice at least two hours every single day in his room, just so dedicated. And he's also such a good person, that he inspires me to want to be a better person myself. So it goes beyond just guitar playing. He is a very important person in my life.

Periphery Tour Supports Announced

Six piece progressive metal juggernaut, Periphery will be returning to Australia next week in support of their new album Periphery III: Select Difficulty.

periphery tour australia

Representing the vanguard of addictive, chaotic, challenging and cathartically inviting heavy music for the modern era, Periphery’s triple-guitar attack and rhythmic dexterity has won them a dedicated fanbase that encompasses subcultures ranging from the Vans Warped kid and the metalhead to the most dedicated Rush purist.

Adding fuel to the fire, a select few of Australia’s elite progressive bands have been chosen to join Periphery on this tour Circles & Polaris for all shows except Perth, while in Perth Chaos Divine & Make Way For Man will opening the evening.

Melbourne’s uniquely different heavy music exponents, Circles, create a distinctive fusion of powerhouse progressive rhythms, soaring lead vocals, and dynamic songs that have turned heads all over the world, with the UK’s Metal Hammer Magazine quoting that with their ‘massive, bendy riffs. huge melodies. synapse-frazzling atmospherics. it’s hard to imagine what more circles could do to assert their awesomeness’

Bursting on to the scene with their acclaimed debut EP, The Compass, in 2011, the band established themselves quickly through expansive touring, spreading word of their incredible live show nationwide.

Their first full length, Infinitas arrived in 2013 via the prestigious UK label Basick Records which grew their international profile exponentially. Several European festival appearances and a Euro tour with The Dillinger Escape Plan followed which ultimately enabled them to go out across the UK and Europe on their own headline tour soon after!

Less than a year later they were back on the road in Europe once more on a 23 date tour with Monuments and After the Burial.

Circles incorporate new sounds, styles and production techniques into their already forward thinking ethos, suggesting the new album due sometime in 2017 will be something truly remarkable.

South Sydney Metalcore quintet, Polaris have built a reputation on the road for the last two years as one of the most exciting upcoming live acts in the Australian heavy scene. Their second EP, The Guilt & The Grief was released 12 months ago and debuted at #34 on the ARIA chart and #1 on the AIR chart! Hitting the road in support of its release practically non stop for most of 2016, Polaris sold out most of their headline tour and went on to support acts such as Stories, Plini, Intervals and Parkway Drive. With the November tour with Northland and Hellions plus their recent appearance at the Unify Gathering, Polaris have fine tuned their live show to devastating effect.

Perth’s enigmatic prog metal five-piece Chaos Divine have well and truly immersed themselves in a realm of sound and style matched by few, and admired by many. Leading audiences and listeners through a journey of uncompromising arrangements, crushing heavy riffs and soaring melodies, Chaos Divine have carved out an impressive reputation for delivering a powerful and dynamic live show, which has seen them support the likes of Slayer, Mastodon, TesseracT, Animals As Leaders, and Between The Buried And Me. Their latest release Colliding Skies was heralded globally as one of 2015’s best progressive heavy albums.

Six piece tech-metal scientists, Make Way For Man are comprised of members from past and current groups including Saviour, I, Said the Sparrow, This Other Eden, Reflections of Ruin, Vesper’s Descent and more.

In the short period of time that they have been collaborating, they have produced a phenomenal library of work that reflects their heritage and pedigree.

Periphery have earned their highly respected reputation onstage and off through a combination of undeniable chops, upbeat charisma and jaw dropping live show. Dedicating themselves to reaching levels of artistry, musicianship and craftmanship so high as to transcend from being the most important band of the djent subgenre to being one of the most important metal bands period.

Boundary pushing experimentalism, nuanced mathematical cacophony and complex grooves have the average Periphery fan just as likely to scramble for guitar tabs to decode those inscrutable polyrhythms as they are to bruise themselves in the moshpit.

The bands last headline tour of Australia was sold out. Expect this one to do the same!

Thursday, February 2: Max Watts, Brisbane w/ Circles & Polaris Friday, February 3: Metro Theatre, Sydney w/ Circles & Polaris Sunday, February 5: 170 Russell, Melbourne w/ Circles & Polaris Tuesday, February 7: Fowlers Live, Adelaide w/ Circles & Polaris Thursday, February 9: Capitol, Perth w/ Chaos Divine & Make Way For Man

Periphery & Crossfaith Live @ The Espy, Melbourne, Australia

If you happened upon the Esplanade Hotel tonight you would have witnessed a lengthy queue comprised of every type of fan. From the basketball top donning metal-core fan, to the staunchest metal-head, to the biggest nerd, to even the most casually dressed of folk. Periphery’s reach alone should be enough reason to give them some credit.

While not seeing a great deal of Crossfaith t-shirts around, the Gershwin Room was packed early on and very receptive when the Japanese metal-core band hit the stage with an industrialized version of Strauss’ “Also sprach Zarathustra” (which you might know as that opening music from 2001: A Space Odyssey). It then became apparent why the two bands were paired together for this Sidewave, as Crossfaith also employed Electronica elements in their compositions. The glaring difference being that this band could be described as equal parts Pendulum and Parkway Drive, whereas Periphery’s use of synths is merely complementary.

It seemed at times they would lose the crowd whenever the music tipped too far into the realms of trance, but their unrelenting energy was nothing short of jaw dropping and resulted in multiple circle pits and walls of death from the word go. At times the overbearing synths would cause the mix to be washy, robbing the guitars of their punch and the crowd response could be gauged in relation to this. However their brand of electro-metal-core-by-numbers was enough to keep the attendance energized, despite the occasional reluctant crowd participation. Their reception upon finishing sounded more like “Well done” as opposed to “Thanks for finishing”.

After Crossfaith departed, in contrastingly un-rock star like fashion, Periphery’s Misha Mansoor could be seen wandering the stage with his beer, casually checking his own equipment and chatting with fans. Read any track listing from them and you’ll see this is typical of their attitude towards not taking themselves too seriously.

It would be unfair to expect Periphery to live up to the incomparable energy of Crossfaith given the absurdly technical nature of Periphery’s music, but that didn’t mean they were statues either. Their presence varied from neatly synced head-bangs, to just plain goofing around and understandable moments of focus where required. The bulk of the on stage energy was carried by front-man Spencer Sotelo. The aftermath of Periphery’s previous tour resulted in reports of English Djent’ers Tesseract ‘wiping the floor with Periphery’, largely in part due to Sotelo’s poor vocal performance (apparently due to bronchitis). Despite the large amounts of talent in the band, Sotelo would have to be a highlight this time. His metal growls were executed powerfully and belting melodies in songs such as ‘Facepalm Mute’ and ‘Ragnarok’ were nailed effortlessly and without falter (apart from a slip up in ‘Icarus Lives’ which was promptly laughed off by Sotelo). Someone’s been practicing. Once again, the more densely layered songs suffered in the mix but not to the point where the overall show lacked as a result, the band’s hyper-produced material was replicated faithfully, barring the classy Red Hot Chili Peppers insert during the ‘Make Total Destroy’ bridge.

It was hard to tell if everyone was worn out towards the end, or just stunned after a performance of the fifteen-minute epic ‘Race Car’ as their encore, but once they finished, the reaction said it all. Two wonderfully executed performances by two world-class bands.

Periphery Announce ‘Periphery III: Select Difficulty’ Australian Tour

By Mike Hohnen

Washington progressive metal outfit Periphery have celebrated the release of their new album Periphery III: Select Difficulty in the greatest way possible, by announcing an Australian tour in support of the new record.

Next February, Periphery will descend upon our fair land, with shows lined up in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Having toured here previously, Australian fans are no stranger to the unique brand of chaos that comes with a Periphery show — the logistics alone are jaw-dropping, let alone the surgical precision of their music.

Periphery III: Select Difficulty is the latest in a string of forward-thinking and dangerously progressive releases from the band, who found themselves churning out the follow-up to 2015’s Juggernaut at a much more rapid pace.

Music Feeds spoke to guitarist Jake Bowen about the album earlier this year, and about how the Juggernaut double album shaped the band’s attitude towards the follow-up.

Periphery’s previous headline run in Australia completely sold out, so you won’t want to dick around with this one. Catch all the tour and ticket details, below.
