Hong kong tourism board.
Seamlessly blending Portuguese and Chinese culture, Macao is a city of unique charm, exemplified by the UNESCO World Heritage Site status of its historic centre. Dramatically contrasting with the centre’s old-world charm are the city’s world-class hotels and resorts, expansive tourism and entertainment facilities, luxurious shopping malls and state-of-the-art convention and exhibition venues.
Macao also offers mouth-watering cuisine, glittering night views and a calendar packed full of events, including the Macao Arts Festival, Macao International Dragon Boat Races, Macao International Fireworks Display Contest, Macau Food Festival and Macau Grand Prix.
Ruins of St. Paul's
The Ruins of St. Paul's jointly refer to the facade of what was originally the Church of Mater Dei (built in 1602–1640 and destroyed by fire in 1835) and the ruins of St. Paul's College, which stood adjacent to the church. As a whole, the Church of Mater Dei, St. Paul's College and Mount Fortress (see below) were all Jesuit constructions and formed Macao's ‘acropolis’. The archaeological remains of St. Paul’s College stand witness to what was Asia’s first Western-style university offering an elaborate academic programme. Nowadays, the Ruins of St. Paul’s symbolically function as an altar to the city.
A-Ma Temple
The A-Ma Temple existed long before the city of Macao came into being. It consists of the Gate Pavilion, the Memorial Arch, the Prayer Hall, the Hall of Benevolence, the Hall of Guanyin, and Zhengjiao Chanlin (a Buddhist pavilion). The variety of pavilions here that are dedicated to the worship of different deities within a unified complex make A-Ma Temple an exemplary representation of the true diversity of Chinese culture, inspired by Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and multiple folk beliefs.
Mount Fortress
Built in conjunction with the Jesuits from 1617 to 1626, this was once Macao’s principal military defence structure. The fortress was equipped with cannons, military barracks, wells and an arsenal that held sufficient ammunition and supplies to endure a siege lasting up to two years. The fortress covers an area of 10,000 square metres and is in the shape of a trapezoid. The four corners of the fortress protrude to form bulwarks.

To build a global center of tourism and leisure and promote quality tourism New tourism theme and image to be created to keep pace with the new era
Director of Macau Government Tourist Office, João Manuel Costa Antunes unveiled today that close to 25 million visitor arrivals were recorded last year. Macau will strive to establish a quality tourism destination, enhancing tourism products and improving service quality, to be in line with the development strategy of building Macau into a global center of tourism and leisure. At the MGTO Annual Press Conference held today (Jan 19) at the Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Center, Director Antunes reviewed last year's tourism development of Macau and outlined this year's tourism strategies and marketing promotional activities to nearly 400 attendants including MGTO representatives around the world, travel industry partners and a hundred international and local media. Speaking at the press conference, Antunes expressed that under the policy support of the Central Government, Macau SAR government is dedicating efforts in building Macau into a global center of tourism and leisure. The tourism industry of Macau enjoyed a steady growth last year, with provisional figures showing that visitor arrivals hit 24,965,000 in 2010, registering an increase of 15% compared with 2009. The Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan continue to be the top three visitor generating markets. Visitors from the Mainland and Hong Kong scored a surge of 20% and 11% respectively. New markets such as India, Russia and the Middle East also performed well last year, with a rise of 57%, 49% and 33% respectively over 2009. Antunes noted that visitors from Asia surged by 15%, while markets in the Americas, Europe, Africa and other regions also recorded growth. From January to November 2010, 48% of total arrivals stayed overnight, among which 65% or over 7 million stayed in hotels. Half of these hotel overnight guests chose 5-star hotels. The average length of stay stood at 1.54 nights. He continued that apart from Thailand which was affected by its domestic situation, the other top nine markets registered positive gains, among which, arrivals from Korea and the Mainland jumped by 62% and 20% respectively. Korea, India and the Mainland were the three markets with the highest growth in overnight guests while the United Kingdom, New Zealand and the United States were the top three markets in terms of length of stay. Total visitor expenditure in 2009 reached US$17.1 billion, a rise of 4.9%. From January to September 2010, total visitor expenditure hit US$18.2 billion, a significant growth of 52.2% over the same period of 2009. According to information of visitors surveyed in the third quarter of 2010, the Mainland cemented its position as the highest-spending market, followed by Southeast Asian countries and Japan. Currently, Macau has 62 hotels and 31 guesthouses, providing 20,988 rooms (guesthouses and 2 to 5-star deluxe hotels). The average occupancy rate of 3 to 5-star hotels in 2009 was 76.1%, while in 2010, the average occupancy rate of 3 to 5-star hotels was 84.5%, representing an increase of 8.4 percentage points over 2009. The average hotel room rate was US$138.9, an increase of 7.7%. Total number of occupied rooms from January to November 2010 was 5.17 million, a surge of 22%. Currently, there are 150 travel agencies and 1,477 tour guides in Macau, among which, Thai, Korean, English and Japanese speaking tour guides recorded the highest growth last year, increasing by 100%, 13.3%, 9.6% and 9.4% respectively. He pointed out that the Macau Business Tourism Center supported 266 events last year, 31% more than 2009, with total participants of 1.2 million, representing an increase of 130%. As for the Industry Partner Program, there are a total of 177 trade partners who have joined the program till the end of last year, 18% higher than 2009. Reviewing the implementation of the “Plan to Support Macau Tourism Industry”, "Support to Leisure Tourism" consisted of “Celebrate Macau Tours” and World Heritage "Historic Centre of Macau" Free Guiding Service. From May 18, 2009 to March 31, 2010, 66 travel agencies took part in “Celebrate Macau Tours” and 54,000 tour groups were organized, involving 1.33 million visitors and 58,000 tour guides. In the aviation aspect, MGTO focused on supporting local carriers, new routes development and providing promotional budget support to airlines operating to Macau. “Support to Sichuan’s Tourism” launched in 2008 organized special packages to Sichuan and assisted in promotion of Sichuan tourism. The plan also exempted the initial renewal fees for licenses and work permits of businesses or professionals related to the tourism industry, in addition to supporting the industry’s training initiatives. “Strategic MICE Market Stimulation Program” supported 163 events in 2010, involving over 630,000 participants. The program will be extended to June 30, 2011 with updated content. Antunes expressed that the announcement of the “Outline of the Plan for the Reform and Development of the Pearl River Delta” in 2008 consolidates Macau’s positioning as a global center of tourism and leisure. Macau is leveraging this strategic position and development direction to establish Macau as a quality tourism destination, enhancing tourism products and improving service quality, in keeping with the development strategy of building Macau into a global center of tourism and leisure. To achieve the goal of a quality tourism destination, MGTO will actively improve the management of the industry and administration, enhance the tourism environment and products, launch a new tourism promotional image and strengthen regional cooperation. He added that MGTO will continue to join forces with related government departments to optimize tourism and world heritage resources in developing a cultural tourism brand for visitors to experience the unique cultural ambiance of Macau. He pointed out that MGTO supports the development of budget hotels and will coordinate and communicate with related departments to study the re-use of small-scale buildings and land at the old districts. At the same time, MGTO will regularly review and improve the enforcement and effectiveness of the law on “Prohibition of Providing Illegal Accommodation”. Antunes noted that MGTO will review and intensify the “Quality and Honest Macau Tour” scheme, which will be expanded to other Mainland source markets beyond Shenzhen. MGTO also plans to discuss issues on "zero/negative-fare" tours with related Mainland departments. He added that MGTO plans to introduce more electronic services this year to be in line with the development of e-government. A total revamp for an interactive tourism website will also be launched to broaden the effectiveness of tourism promotion and build a friendlier online environment for visitors.

7 New MACAU Attractions to Add to Your Itinerary
When it comes to transformation, few could rival Macau. Every time we return, we’re always greeted by something new – be it a new hotel , new restaurant or new attraction. We recently made two separate trips in the past four months. Prior to this, it has been years since we last set foot in the territory, and we were surprised how drastically Macau has transformed. Many of them were launched during or after the pandemic. Here are seven of them!
WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?
1. Harry Potter The Exhibition
Location: The Londoner Macao
Yes, Macau is now home to a Harry Potter attraction! As Potterheads, wherever there are traces of the Wizarding World, we’ll be there sooner or later. Sooner, in this case, because it was just inaugurated on 15th December 2023. We were able to visit just a month after it opened its doors to wizard wannabes like us.
Encompassing almost 3000 square meters, this brand new interactive museum inside The Londoner will take you through more than 20 magical galleries! But before you start exploring, you need to register first for a more personalized experience. You’ll be given an electronic wrist band that you can use to access many of the fun activities like seeing your name on the Marauder’s Map, brewing your favorite potion, harvesting a shockingly silent mandrake, and having a go at Divination!
There’s a section where you could conquer a boggart or your greatest fear, or conjure a Patronus. Vins had a field day trying to hone his non-existent Quidditch shooting skills, too!
Along the way, you’ll get to know more about Hogwarts and the Wizarding World in general, and how the filmmakers brought them to life.
It was fun, but if you’ve been to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour, Tokyo , just temper your expectations a little bit. It’s not as huge, as grand or as immersive, but it’s a great experience nevertheless. It’s a fantastic dose of nostalgia for Potterheads.
Regular time slot tickets cost MOP 218 on weekdays, MOP 268 on weekends and holidays. These tickets are limited only to specific time slots. But if you want flexible tickets, you can snatch one on Klook!

2. The Londoner Macao
The Harry Potter Exhibition isn’t the only family-friendly attraction at The Londoner Macao . This London-themed hotel and entertainment complex officially opened on 25 May 2023, at the site where the Sands Cotai Central used to stand. But it wasn’t just given a simple rebrand. It’s more like a complete British makeover, from the exterior to the attractions housed in it.
The first thing you’ll notice is its stunning façade, a lookalike of the Palace of Westminster and Houses of Parliament, and a replica of the Big Ben , trying to compete for attention from The Parisian ’s Eiffel Tower just across the street. It chimes every hour, but it’s most spectacular at night!
Inside, you could get lost in mini-London and take unlimited selfies at the many UK icons scattered around the area, including:
- a replica of the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain at the main lobby
- a double-decker bus
- a statue of Sir Winston Churchill greeting everyone at 10 Downing Street
- Black Cab Escape , a virtual drive with David Beckham
We were told there’s also a changing of the guards, but we didn’t get to see it.
All these can be accessed for FREE by the way.
3. teamLab SuperNature
Location: The Venetian Macao
We’ve been at a teamLab museum in Tokyo, Singapore, and Osaka, so we weren’t particularly thrilled about visiting another one. But boy oh boy, Macau’s teamLab SuperNature is one of the best!
For the uninitiated, teamLab is an international art collective that was formed in Tokyo. It’s behind many of the body immersive museums and installations that quote “seeks to transcend the boundaries between the self and the world, and our perceptions of them.” Wow, such hifalutin words.
But in simpler terms, think of it as an interactive art museum on steroids. The entire space is the canvas, and the art isn’t merely put on display. It moves, pops in and out, and invites audience participation. We’re not just observers. Often, we become part of the piece. Just like this wall, on which flowers blossom as it detects movement. It’s mesmerizing and creative.
This creativity is evident in all 5000 square meters of teamLab SuperNature. In one room, you can draw a flower or a frog, scan your sketch, and watch it become a part of the giant artwork!
teamLab SuperNature has been around since the pandemic years, but some of its best exhibitions were only made available starting June 2023. Three of them require payment on top of the entrance fee, though:
- Floating Flower Garden , a room of mirrors bursting with 8000 live orchids that seem to float in mid-air.
- En Tea House , where you are served matcha and ice cream while you watch flowers and branches sprout and grow each time you put your cup down and see them wither and dry as you lift them for a sip.
- Massless Clouds Between Sculpture and Life , where you could have fun with foam that resemble clouds. I know, I heard someone say the name sounds pretentious. And I can’t say I disagree. But I had a grand time here. To access it, you need to be fully covered, so expect to don a raincoat, goggles, and waterproof shoe covers. Then, you enter a room full of foam. It’s just that — like detergent foam. Now that I think about it, I can’t believe I paid extra for that, but it took me back to my childhood, when I would always play with foam and bubbles, while helping my family do the laundry. And just being in that moment and knowing that I never really had any opportunity to do that anymore, it was bliss.
And I think that’s the beauty of it. That’s why teamLab works. It allows us to reconnect with a part of ourselves that we forget is still with us. I’m telling you, I can’t remember the last time I held a crayon and drew something – and I could do it anytime, yes, but it wouldn’t enter my mind in normal circumstances, and not in this almost magical environment.
Anyway, regular tickets cost MOP 290 apiece, but you can get discounted tickets on Klook.
✅ GET DISCOUNTED TICKETS HERE!
TEAMLAB SUPERNATURE TICKET PRICES Regular Ticket: MOP 290 (PHP 2015, USD 36) Klook price: MOP 286 (PHP 1989, USD 35.50) Hours open: 11:00 AM-7:00 PM
4. Illuminarium Macao
Location: Wynn Palace Cotai
Another newly opened virtual attraction is Illuminarium ! Present also in Las Vegas, Toronto, and Atlanta, Illuminarium has reached Asian shores and set up shop here at the Wynn Palace Cotai . It’s also immersive – allowing you to experience sensory and sometimes interactive digital presentations as though you’re in that world, which is just projected on the walls, floors, and ceilings.
Here at Illuminarium Macau , we were told that the theme changes every season or so. But for now, the spotlight is on space exploration. As you walk from room to room, you get to marvel at the vastness and grandness of the universe.
ILLUMINARIUM MACAO Hours Open: Tuesdays-Sundays 11:00 AM-7:00 PM Closed: Mondays Regular Ticket: MOP 228 Concession: MOP 188
5. Grand Prix Museum
The Macau Grand Prix is one of the most anticipated sporting events in this part of the world, drawing in throngs of visitors.
In 1993, in celebration of the race’s 40th anniversary, the Macau Grand Prix Museum was opened. But the Macao Government Tourism Office breathed new life into it in 2021 when it underwent major remodeling and filled it with more exciting attractions including virtual reality simulators and 8 wax figures of famous Grand Prix champions, five of which were in collaboration with Madame Tussaud’s:
- John Macdonald
- Michael Rutter
- Robert Huff
- Edoardo Mortara
The museum houses four levels of racing artifacts, models, and information. The top floor is dedicated to the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix . We tried riding a motorcycle and, oh my gosh, I was awful at it. Totally horrendous and hopeless. If it were a real course, I would’ve been dead 10 seconds into it. LOL. And mind you, I know how to drive a motorcycle. But it felt completely different. So different I wasn’t able to finish the course. I probably held the record for the worst driver that day.
The first floor is where you’ll find formula race cars ! There are also simulators, but the queue was quite long and it moved very slowly so we didn’t bother. Also, because I totally sucked at the two-wheel ride, I would probably crash this one pretty horribly too. So I just took my chances at the other fun activities. I sucked at them, too. Man, I sucked at these games!
Anyway, down to the basement we went. This is the Macau GT Cup and Guia Race zone ! And it’s also filled with so many race-related activities. You can try to be a media coverage staff or change wheels at a pit stop!
If you’re a racing fan or you just love cars and motorcycles – you’ll definitely have a field day here! As for me, the only race I enjoy watching is Rupaul’s Drag Race. But although I wasn’t good at any of it, I still had a lot of fun at the Macau Grand Prix Museum.
6. Martial Arts Arena
Location: Grand Lisboa Palace Resort
From one sport to the next! The Macao government is really serious in building up and promoting Macau as the City of Sport!
Inaugurated in December 2023, Martial Arts Arena also utilizes virtual reality and other tech to highlight wushu ! Wushu means martial arts, and it puts together many Chinese forms like tai chi and Shaolin Kung fu.
As you enter the Martial Arts Arena, you’ll be handed a card that you’ll need to scan to take on several challenges, each focusing on an aspect of wushu. You won’t emerge from this arena as a wushu master, but you’ll have a better appreciation of this martial art – or martial arts in general!
Oh I almost forgot, just beside it is another attraction called AI Wonderland , which features various forms of artificial intelligence, but I enjoyed the Martial Arts Arena much more.
7. Grand Lisboa Palace Resort
Macau has seen a lot of new hotel complexes rise over the past few years, forever changing the city’s skyline. W Macao and its in-house buffet restaurant Hawker Hawker have just recently opened to guests and diners.
But this time, let’s focus on another new resort on the other side of the strip – Grand Lisboa Palace Resort . Not to be confused with its sister pineapple-shaped property in the mainland, the Grand Lisboa Palace is bigger and grander in many ways.
It has three hotels: Grand Lisboa Palace, the Karl Lagerfeld , and Palazzo Versace.
We’ve never tried staying at any of them, but at the invitation of the Macau Government Tourism Office, we were given a tour of the complex. The Grand Lisboa Palace gives a nod to the Sino-Portuguese traditions, while the Karl Lagerfeld just screams style and luxury.
At its core is a European-inspired courtyard called Secret Garden (Jardim Secreto). There wasn’t much crowd when we visited, so it was nice to have some peace and quiet that time. You can also easily find an Instagrammable spot wherever you look. And yes, you can access it for free.
Inside, at its mall area, aside from the Martial Arts Arena and AI Wonderland , you’ll also find several shopping and dining establishments, the biggest name of which is the Palace Garden , a Michelin-cited Taishi restaurant, headed by Chef Ken Chiong.

Flights to Macau
Philippine Airlines offers direct flights from Manila to Macau! So if you haven’t booked a ticket yet, consider flying with PAL! One thing I love about PAL is the generous baggage allowance that automatically comes with each booking. For Macau flights, economy passengers can take advantage of:
- 25-kg check-in baggage
- 7-kg carry-on baggage
Another reason we prefer PAL is its four-star service and delicious inflight meals and unlimited drinks on board, which are already included in the booking.

China Travel Advisory
Travel advisory april 12, 2024, mainland china, hong kong & macau - see summaries.
Updated due to new national security legislation in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
Summary: Reconsider travel to Mainland China due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws, including in relation to exit bans, and the risk of wrongful detentions.
Exercise increased caution when traveling to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws .
Reconsider travel to the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) due to a limited ability to provide emergency consular services . Exercise increased caution when traveling to the Macau SAR due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws .
See specific risks and conditions in each jurisdiction .
Mainland China – Level 3: Reconsider Travel
Reconsider travel due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws , including in relation to exit bans, and the risk of wrongful detentions .
Summary: The People’s Republic of China (PRC) government arbitrarily enforces local laws, including issuing exit bans on U.S. citizens and citizens of other countries, without fair and transparent process under the law.
The Department of State has determined the risk of wrongful detention of U.S. nationals by the PRC government exists in the PRC.
U.S. citizens traveling or residing in the PRC may be detained without access to U.S. consular services or information about their alleged crime. U.S. citizens in the PRC may be subjected to interrogations and detention without fair and transparent treatment under the law.
Foreigners in the PRC, including but not limited to businesspeople, former foreign-government personnel, academics, relatives of PRC citizens involved in legal disputes, and journalists have been interrogated and detained by PRC officials for alleged violations of PRC national security laws. The PRC has also interrogated, detained, and expelled U.S. citizens living and working in the PRC.
PRC authorities appear to have broad discretion to deem a wide range of documents, data, statistics, or materials as state secrets and to detain and prosecute foreign nationals for alleged espionage. There is increased official scrutiny of U.S. and third-country firms, such as professional service and due diligence companies, operating in the PRC. Security personnel could detain U.S. citizens or subject them to prosecution for conducting research or accessing publicly available material inside the PRC.
Security personnel could detain and/or deport U.S. citizens for sending private electronic messages critical of the PRC, Hong Kong SAR, or Macau SAR governments.
In addition, the PRC government has used restrictions on travel or departure from the PRC, or so-called exit bans, to:
- compel individuals to participate in PRC government investigations;
- pressure family members of the restricted individual to return to the PRC from abroad;
- resolve civil disputes in favor of PRC citizens; and
- gain bargaining leverage over foreign governments.
U.S. citizens might only become aware of an exit ban when they attempt to depart the PRC, and there may be no available legal process to contest an exit ban in a court of law. Relatives, including minor children, of those under investigation in the PRC may become subject to an exit ban.
The PRC government does not recognize dual nationality. Dual U.S.-PRC citizens and U.S. citizens of Chinese descent may be subject to additional scrutiny and harassment. If you are a U.S. citizen and choose to enter Mainland China on travel documents other than a U.S. passport and are detained or arrested, the PRC government may not notify the U.S. Embassy or the U.S. Consulates General or allow consular access.
Check with the PRC Embassy in the United States for the most updated information on travel to the PRC. In some limited circumstances travelers to Mainland China may face additional COVID-19 testing requirements to enter some facilities or events.
The Department of State does not provide or coordinate direct medical care to private U.S. citizens abroad. U.S. citizens overseas may receive PRC-approved COVID-19 vaccine doses where they are eligible.
Do not consume drugs in the PRC or prior to arriving in the PRC. A positive drug test, even if the drug was legal elsewhere, can lead to immediate detention, fines, deportation, and/or a ban from re-entering the PRC. PRC authorities may compel cooperation with blood, urine, or hair testing. Penalties for drug offense may exceed penalties imposed in the United States.
Demonstrations : Participating in demonstrations or any other activities that authorities interpret as constituting an act of secession, subversion, terrorism, or collusion with a foreign country could result in criminal charges. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid demonstrations.
XINJIANG UYGHUR AUTONOMOUS REGION, TIBET AUTONOMOUS REGION, and TIBETAN AUTONOMOUS PREFECTURES
Extra security measures, such as security checks and increased levels of police presence and surveillance, are common in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, Tibet Autonomous Region, and Tibetan Autonomous Prefectures. Authorities may impose curfews and travel restrictions on short notice.
If you decide to travel to Mainland China:
- Enter the PRC on your U.S. passport with a valid PRC visa and keep it with you.
- Read the travel information page for Mainland China .
- Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
- Avoid demonstrations.
- Exercise caution in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
- Avoid taking photographs of protesters or police without permission.
- Keep a low profile.
- If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify U.S. Embassy Beijing or the nearest U.S. Consulate General immediately.
- Review the China Country Security Report from the Overseas Security Advisory Council.
- Do not consume drugs in the PRC or prior to arriving in the PRC.

Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) – Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution
Exercise increased caution due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws .
Summary: Hong Kong SAR authorities have dramatically restricted civil liberties since the Government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) imposed the Law of the PRC on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong SAR on June 30, 2020. Following the Hong Kong SAR government’s enactment of its own Safeguarding National Security Ordinance on March 23, 2024, Hong Kong SAR authorities are expected to take additional actions to further restrict civil liberties.
The 2020 National Security Law outlines a broad range of vaguely defined offenses, such as acts of secession, subversion, terrorism, and collusion with foreign entities. The 2024 Safeguarding National Security Ordinance builds on this framework with additional vaguely defined offenses, such as treason, insurrection, theft of state secrets, sabotage against public infrastructure, and external interference. According to the legislation, these offenses are applicable to foreign nationals within the Hong Kong SAR and to individuals, including U.S. citizens and permanent residents, located outside its borders. Under these provisions, anyone who criticizes the PRC and/or Hong Kong SAR authorities may face arrest, detention, expulsion, and/or prosecution. Hong Kong SAR authorities are attempting to enforce these provisions against individuals, including U.S. citizens and permanent residents, residing outside of their jurisdiction by offering cash rewards for information leading to their arrests in the Hong Kong SAR.
Dual Nationality: The Hong Kong SAR government does not recognize dual nationality. Dual U.S.-PRC citizens and U.S. citizens of Chinese descent may be subject to additional scrutiny and harassment. If you are a dual U.S.-PRC citizen and enter Hong Kong SAR on a U.S. passport, and you are detained or arrested, PRC authorities are under an obligation to notify the U.S. Embassy or a U.S. Consulate General of your detention and to allow U.S. consular officials to have access to you. In practice, however, U.S. consular officers may be prevented from providing consular assistance, even to those who have entered on their U.S. passports. For more information, visit Consular Protection and Right of Abode in HK(SAR) for Dual Nationals - U.S. Consulate General Hong Kong & Macau .
Demonstrations : Participating in demonstrations or any other activities that authorities interpret as constituting an act of secession, subversion, terrorism, or collusion with a foreign country could result in criminal charges under the 2020 National Security Law and/or the 2024 Safeguarding National Security Ordinance. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid demonstrations.
If you decide to travel to the Hong Kong SAR:
- Enter the Hong Kong SAR on your U.S. passport and keep it with you.
- Read the travel information page for the Hong Kong SAR .
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify U.S. Consulate General Hong Kong & Macau immediately.
- Review the China Country Security Report from the Overseas Security Advisory Council.
- Do not consume drugs in the Hong Kong SAR or prior to arriving in the Hong Kong SAR.

Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) – Level 3: Reconsider Travel
Reconsider travel due to a limited ability to provide emergency consular services. Exercise increased caution due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws.
Summary: The U.S. government has a limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in the Macau SAR due to People’s Republic of China (PRC) Ministry of Foreign Affairs travel restrictions on U.S. diplomatic personnel.
Even in an emergency, the PRC Ministry of Foreign Affairs requires all U.S. diplomatic personnel, including those accredited to the Macau SAR, to apply for and receive visas before entering the Macau SAR. Approval takes at least five to seven days, significantly limiting the U.S. government’s ability to offer timely consular services in the Macau SAR.
Dual Nationality: The Macau SAR government does not recognize dual nationality. Dual U.S.-PRC citizens and U.S. citizens of Chinese descent may be subject to additional scrutiny and harassment. If you are a dual U.S.-PRC citizen and enter the Macau SAR on a U.S. passport, and you are detained or arrested, PRC authorities are under an obligation to notify the U.S.

If you decide to travel to the Macau SAR:
- Enter the Macau SAR on your U.S. passport and keep it with you.
