What to See in Bhandardara - A Traveler's Guide

Perched high in the Sahyadri ranges, Bhandardara is a picturesque little hill station with breathtaking natural beauty. Having visited Bhandardara numerous times over the years, I'd like to share my favorite things to see and experience for anyone considering a visit to this offbeat destination.

Situated around 185 kilometers from Mumbai, Bhandardara makes for an ideal weekend getaway for city dwellers looking to escape to nature. From gushing waterfalls to picturesque trekking trails, and ancient forts to emerald green lakes - Bhandardara's charm lies in its diverse landscapes.

As a travel writer and photographer, I find immense joy in exploring the rich beauty of Bhandardara through my many sojourns.

Wilson Dam and Lake

The first spot I'd recommend visiting is the gorgeous Wilson Dam built across the Pravara River. One can admire the massive stone and masonry structure of the dam while boating on the sparkling Arthur Lake that it backs up. Marvel at the still green waters contrasted against towering mountains, especially during monsoons when filled to the brim. Don't miss witnessing the dam's floodgates open on specific days - it offers a peek into the engineering mastery involved.

What to See in Bhandardara

Umbrella and Randha Falls

For waterfall lovers, Bhandardara has two stunning cascades - the 145-foot-high Umbrella Falls and the picturesque Randha Falls. I'd suggest starting early and trekking through lush forests to view Umbrella Falls in its full glory during the monsoon season. The gushing silvery water pouring down amidst a canopy of trees is a sight to behold.

Next stop by the tranquil Randha Falls that drop into a rocky basin surrounded by greenery. The sound of water hitting the rocks along with chirping birds makes it a hotspot for nature photography. Don't forget to capture the picture-perfect reflection of the falls.

Also read - My Trek to the Hidden Harihar Fort

Ratangad Fort

If ancient hill forts enthrall you, the hike up to Ratangad Fort should definitely be on your Bhandardara itinerary. Perched at over 2600 feet above sea level, parts of the Ratangad Fort hike can get challenging but push through - the payoff is worth it!

Climbing up the last stretch to view the intact bastions and stone structures with Ratanwadi village and Pravara valley sprawled below is an unforgettable experience. For some added adventure, try rock climbing at the fort.

Agasti Rishi Ashram

After ticking off the nature spots, I recommend making a stopover at the ancient Agasti Rishi ashram tucked by the banks of the Pravara. Soak in the spiritual vibes as you admire sixth-century shrines nestled amidst lush forests by the gurgling river.

Visit the nearby Shiva temple as well to take in lovely stone carvings and intricate architecture.

Camping and Stargazing

As an avid outdoor enthusiast, I'd suggest camping by the serene Arthur Lake for a night to fully relish Bhandardara's wilderness. Imagine waking up to misty sunrises, birdsongs from the woods and no other sound except nature itself.

Hire a tent or stay in quaint homestays, and enjoy a bonfire night under the stars while listening to folk tales from the locals. I guarantee this experience will help wash away your city fatigue in no time.

Also read - Finding Solace at the Dugarwadi Waterfall

With its abundant natural splendor yet crowd-free vibes, Bhandardara indeed makes for a rejuvenating weekend trip away from urban chaos. Follow my travel guide to soak in the best of what Bhandardara has to offer. Go at your own pace, allow yourself to get immersed in nature's calming energy and discover beautiful little joys in every corner of this quaint hill station.

Trust me, you'll leave with a rested body and mind ready to get back to city life.

As one of the top metropolitan cities in the country, Denver boasts a host of attractions—Coors Field, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Denver Art Museum and many breweries. Yet, according to a poll jointly conducted by Real Estate Witch , an online real estate platform and cannabis information and resource site Leafly , the Mile High City has just been named the best weed city in the U.S. for 2024.

Last year, according to the same poll, Denver slipped to number two but now thanks to its number of dispensaries, four times the average city, the city is back sitting pretty in the top spot.

The metrics that were used to determine the ranking included the following: legality of cannabis, dispensaries per 100,000 residents, cannabis-prescribing doctors per 100,000 residents, average rating of dispensaries out of five stars, affordability of high-quality weed, fast food restaurants per 100,000 residents and local hiking trails according to the AllTrails database.

The poll uncovered some very interesting findings:

*While Denver is the best weed city, Louisville is the worst;

*Kansas City is the most improved weed city, rising 13 spots from No. 22 in 2023 to No. 9 this year;

*Missouri legalized recreational weed just two years ago, but Kansas City already has double the number of dispensaries per capita as Los Angeles, where weed has been fully legal since 2016;

*Sacramento has the most affordable pot prices while for the third year in a row, Washington, D.C. has the most expensive weed; and,

*Baltimore has more cannabis-prescribing doctors than any other city, with nearly 14 per 100,000 residents;.

Thailand has a plan to contain the monkey mayhem in the popular tourist town of Lopburi

Wildlife authorities in Thailand are planning to round up thousands of monkeys that roam the central town of Lopburi, after the animals’ aggressive behavior and attacks on residents and visitors sparked outrage and calls for their removal.

BANGKOK (AP) — Thai wildlife officials laid out a plan on Wednesday to bring peace to a central Thai city after at least a decade of human-monkey conflict.

The macaques that roam Lopburi are a symbol of local culture, and a major tourist draw. But after years of dangerous encounters with residents and visitors and several failed attempts to bring peace with population controls, local people and businesses have had enough.

The monkeys frequently try to snatch food from humans, sometimes resulting in tussles that can leave people with scratches and other injuries. But outrage grew in March when a woman dislocated her knee after a monkey pulled her off her feet in an effort to grab food, and another man was knocked off a motorcycle by a hungry monkey.

Authorities hope to round up some 2,500 urban monkeys and place them in massive enclosures, said Athapol Charoenshunsa, the director-general of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation. They’ll work with wildlife experts to find a way for a limited number of monkeys to stay at liberty in the city, he added.

“I don’t want humans to have to hurt monkeys, and I don’t want monkeys to have to hurt humans,” he told reporters during a news conference in Bangkok.

An official monkey catching campaign was launched week, prioritizing more aggressive alpha males. It has caught 37 monkeys so far, most of whom have been placed put under the care of wildlife authorities in the neighboring province of Saraburi, while others were sent to the Lopburi zoo.

Officials said they plan to capture the rest of the monkeys once the enclosures are complete, especially those in the residential areas. Separate cages will be prepared for different troops of monkeys to prevent them from fighting.

Athapol said he expects the first phase of the operation to start within weeks, and believes the huge cages will be able to contain thousands of them and “will solve the problem very quickly.”

The monkeys are a symbol of the province, about 140 kilometers (90 miles) north of Bangkok, where the ancient Three Pagodas temple celebrates an annual “Monkey Buffet” festival, and they’re commonly seen throughout the city. Macaques are classified as a protected species under Thailand’s wildlife conservation law.

Some have blamed the city’s monkey troubles on tourists and residents feeding the animals, which they say drew monkeys into the city and boosted their numbers, as well as getting them accustomed to getting food from humans.

But an earlier effort to limit feeding may have made things worse, some residents say. Local officials began threatening fines for feeding monkeys outside a few designated areas around the main tourist attractions in recent years. But those feeding areas were dominated by a few troops of the highly territorial creatures, while rival bands grew hungry and turned to harassing humans in other areas for food even more.

Athapol said people shouldn’t see monkeys as villians, saying that the authorities might have not been efficient enough in their work to control the simian population.

People also need to adapt to the city’s monkeys, said Phadej Laithong, director of the Wildlife Conservation Office, explaining that a lack of natural food sources prompts the animals to find food wherever they can, including from humans.

Previous control measure have fallen short. From 2014-2023, the wildlife authorities neutered about 2,600 Lopburi monkeys.

Athapol said they are also working in other areas of Thailand that are facing problems with monkeys, such as Prajuab Kiri Khan and Phetchaburi. He said 52 of the country’s 77 provinces report frequent problems from monkeys.
