A Visit To Murten Switzerland: Best Spots, Tips & More

Murten Morat walled city

Murten is one of those places that visitors to Switzerland unfortunately often miss. It is a historic walled-city oozing with charm and is also located right on the shores of Lake Murten in the Fribourg region.

Because Murten is in the French-speaking part of Switzerland it also has two names. It is actually called Morat in French. Murten is the German name!

Find out why Murten is worth your time, even if it is just for half a day!

Table of Contents

Best Things To See In Murten

Murten is small but still chock full of highlights. These are the things you should see when you visit.

Murten Old Town

There are lots of things to see in the old town, even if you just walk around and soak up the history and stunning medieval buildings. But first, you should start with the ring wall.

Murten City Walls

Murten has the claim to fame of having the only complete ring wall in all of Switzerland. It makes for a stunning fantastic entrance to the city, as you pass through the wall via the Berntor clock tower, and it continues to dominate from almost every angle.

Berntor from outside Murten

One of the best ways to appreciate the wall is to actually climb the stairs to the top and walk along to the tower at the other end. I could not get enough photos from this location as you get not only view of the city but of Lake Murten in the distance as well.

Murten Old Town from the Ring Wall

You actually have to head to the back streets of the former fortified city to get to the walls . Then climb up to the top. It’s a fun way to explore the less visited areas of the town. And the covered walkway along the wall, which you can see in my image above, is a great experience. Like being in a medieval castle!

There are actually a lot of churches in Murten, which might be surprising to some of you. Part of the reason is the Swiss religious history of both Protestant and Catholic churches. The other is the bilingual nature of the city.

So, historically there was both a German church and a French church which are the oldest and most interesting to see. The French dates back to the 15th century and the German, seen above by the town wall, is younger but also quite beautiful.

The Main Street

Murten main street with Berntor

Medieval Murten’s main street is also something of a highlight with its vaulted arcades and wide cobbled street. This is where the majority of the shops and restaurants are, so spend some time exploring what is on offer.

We decided to spend lunch here at the Freiburger Fall . They have great burgers and steak, which we ate outside on the terrace inside the arcade. They also have a fun historic-themed interior that makes for a memorable meal.

Murten main street from the top end

Of course, you also get a great view again of the Berntor from the street, so be sure to have your camera ready. I also found it is worth taking shots from both sides as the Berntor makes for a great subject and there is also some nice medieval artwork on the adjacent building.

Murten Old Town back street

We also planned on eating at the Kaserei which is a top-notch restaurant on the back streets of Murten. However, they were unfortunately booked out. So, if you are interested, be sure to book ahead.

Other Worthwhile Attractions

A few other things you might want to see while you are rambling about the old town streets.

Musée de Morat is the place to go if you want to learn more details of Murten’s history. This small town has a very long history dating back thousands of years.

Pile dwelling sites on UNESCO’s World Heritage Site

There are actually 111 ancient lake-dwellings in Switzerland and one of them is right below Murten at the harbor. It is called the Segelboothafen (sailboat harbor) and it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites collection. It was discovered only in 1880 but is a noteworthy historic site to this day.

Lake Murten

Lake Murten at sunset

Lake Murten is one of three lakes in this region known locally as the Fribourg Riviera. Vineyards can be seen on the shores of the lake and there is also a local swimming pool ( Strandbad ) right on the lake, as is common in most swiss lakefront villages. Why not take a dip in a freshwater lake, instead of a chlorine swimming pool I always tell visitors to Switzerland!

The lake is also a great place to go stand up paddling or kayaking if you love water activities. I always get my paddle board out on any new Swiss lake I visit, and have never regretted it to this day. You can rent SUP boards down towards the harbor at Dirtys or Bise Noir if you don’t have your own!

Getting To Murten

Murten is relatively easy to reach by train or car.

The Murten train station is in the new part of town, outside the old city walls. However, it is just a short walk to the old town, around 5 minutes. Trains from:

  • Zurich, Luzern & Geneva take 1 hour 40 minutes
  • Bern will take you only 38 minutes

Murten is just off highway 1 running south from Bern towards Lausanne. You can park just outside the old town in Murten City Parking . That is where we parked and it is a very easy stroll from there to all the attractions.

That’s Murten for you—a place where history meets the tranquility of lakeside life. Even if you’re not that into history, Murten should be on your list!

Murten’s history is as rich and inviting as its scenic views. The town is famous for its well-preserved medieval walls and the Battle of Murten, a pivotal moment in Swiss history. Walking through its cobbled streets, you’ll encounter the Zähringer Castle, which dates back to the 13th century and now houses the local history museum, offering insights into the town’s fascinating past.

But Murten’s charm isn’t confined to its historical sites. The town itself, with its vibrant market square and ancient buildings, reflects a centuries-old heritage. The arcades in the old town are perfect for leisurely strolls, sheltering shops, cafés, and restaurants that beckon visitors to explore and relax.

What to eat in Murten?

Even though Murten is a small town, it even has its own culinary specialty, the Nidelkuchen. Nidelkuchen is a delicious cream pie, with the upper cream layer which has a bit of caramel flavor. Very delicious! Highly recommended to buy a slice at a local bakery and eat it by the lake.

If you visit Murten in summer, you may want to go for a swim in lake Murtensee! There are several beaches on the lake, and there is also a place which combines a swimming pool and the lake. The local swimming pool of Murten has a play area for kids on the lake with a playground, stairs to easily enter the lake, floating platforms to jump in the lake, and a fun zipline.

Avenches and its Roman ruins

Avenches is very close to Murten and can easily be visited on the same trip. Avenches, which was called Aventicum in Roman times, has a very well-preserved Amphitheater where 16.000 people could watch gladiator fights or shows. Nowadays the Amphitheater normally hosts music festivals in summer. You can visit the Amphitheater, the museum located on-site, or head out a bit further from the town center to visit the old city walls or the Roman baths.

Papillorama in Kerzers

Another easy combination with a visit to Murten, and fun for kids, is a visit to the Papillorama in Kerzers. Papillorama is a big tropical garden where more than 1.000 butterflies fly. Papillorama also has a playground and picknick areas.

Magic Switzerland

Murten, Switzerland

visit murten switzerland

Murten is situated between Berne and Lausanne and is the capital of the Lake District of the canton of Fribourg. This small medieval town lies in the Swiss "Midlands" on the edge of the Great Marsh, on a gentle hill (450 metres above sea level) and on the shore of a lake named after the town. Numerous attractions from a significant past have been well preserved here, such as the castle, the ring wall, the street scene and the arcades. Lake of Murten is a smaller lake in between Lake of Biel and Lake of Neuchatel.

Mount Vully is situated on the western side of the Seeland's largest plain and resembles a pearl gently placed among the three lakes of Murten, Neuchatel and Biel. Already long ago, the Celtic and Helevetic tribes appreciated the region's temperate climate and the local countryside's particular charm. Today, the Vully vineyards take up a large part of the south face of the Vully. The over 100 hectares of vineyards are facing towards the Murten Lake, witch assures the mild regional climate.

Murten is also famous in history for the defeat of Charles the Bold by the Swiss. The former fortified city, which has kept most of its ramparts and towers, has picturesque charm.

Attractions and Activities

The well preserved and charming town of Murten invites you to discover its past through its monuments. The lovely area surrounding Murten is lined with vineyards and three lakes invite for watersports and other leisure activities.

Excursions nearby Murten

The Vully Mount Vully is situated on the western side of the Seeland's largest plain and resembles a pearl gently placed among the three lakes of Murten, Neuchatel and Biel. Today, the Vully vineyards take up a large part of the south face of the Vully. The over 100 hectares of vineyards are facing towards the Murten Lake, witch assures the mild regional climate. There are 14 wine growers looking after the wine making process. On the other side of the Mt. Vully, vegetable fields are cultivated. The protected natural reserves along the Broye and the shores of Lake Neuchatel offer quiet and peaceful moments to both walkers and nature lovers. From the south face at the highest point of the Mount Vully, a spectacular bird's eye view awaits the tourist. The lovely Murten Lake, Murten region and the plateau are in the foreground, and the pre-Alps gently rise up to meet the majestic Alps forming a breath-taking picture. Walk to the north face of the Vully and observe the Neuchatel and Biel Lakes with the Jura Mountains on the horizon.

Avenches A national historic site close to Murten: In the early days of our era, Avenches, the capital of Roman Helvetia, had approximately 20 000 inhabitants. Today, the town's Roman vestiges offer the visitor many a fascinating glimpse of the town once called Aventicum: the Roman amphitheatre, a superb setting for many a breathtaking show, the theatre, the "Cigognier" column, and the Eastern Gate and Tornallaz Tower. The Roman Museum, housed in a mediaeval tower built on the grounds of the amphitheatre, features a precious collection of Gallo-Roman antiquities, including the celebrated bust of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. A cornucopia of cultural events: the impressive backdrop of the Roman amphitheatre sets the stage for several highly reputed cultural events. A country where the horse is king: an Equestrian Sports Centre, one of its kinds in Europe, was set up in Avenches in 1999. On 142 hectares, the Centre boasts a racecourse (gallop and trot), and a first rate infrastructure for all equestrian activities: jumping, dressage, horse driving and three-day events. Numerous races with betting and competitions take place each week, making Avenches the undisputed horse capital of Switzerland.

Kerzers The Kerzers region is located on the southern edge of the Great Marsh. During the Roman period, the Seeland was a dry zone. Roman military roads cut through this area towards the east. The Seeland became marsh land during the 16th century and from then on became known as the Great Marsh. The man-made corrections of the Jura waterways permitted the inhabitants to cultivate the land that had once been invaded by mosquitoes and humidity (see the chronology). Thanks to the corrections, numerous archaeological discoveries were made dating back to the Iron Age, the Celtic and Roman eras. The famous "black earth" of the region produces a wide assortment of vegetables for Swiss tables. Vegetable gardening is the mainstay of the local economy.

Papiliorama-Tropical Garden , Kerzers Discover hundreds of colourful, tropical butterflies flying freely around you in an extraordinary garden. Meet hummingbirds, water lilies, fishes and many other fascinating species. Or discover the fascination world of the nocturnal fauna in the tropical forests of America. Observe mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fishes and invertebrates in moonlight atmosphere.

FAQ: MURTEN TRAVEL TIPS

Murten is easily accessible via car or train . It takes only about 30 minutes by train or car to get there from Bern and less than 2 hours from Zurich or Lucerne . Thus, it is also a perfect day trip from any one of these cities.

From the Murten train station, it is a  five-minute walk to the old town.  To see the main sights you will need comfy shoes. Medieval towns often come with cobbled-stoned streets  – and so does Murten. With the right shoes, you can explore the town on foot . The town center is small and even if you walk along the shores of Lake Murten you will not need a bus/car.

To see the places/activities mentioned here, you will need about half a day – if you do a boat cruise (especially the 3-lake cruise) you should plan for a full day in Murten.

SWISS TRAVEL PASS FOR MURTEN /MORTEN

If you get around via public transportation , you should check out the Swiss Travel Pass . I visit Switzerland often, and most of the time I get one – even if it’s a road trip. It is for sale for non-Swiss residents and allows you to use trains and buses without any extra costs.

You can also cruise Lake Murten without any extra costs (boat cruises on most other lakes in Switzerland are also included). There are also more perks that come with the Swiss Travel Pass – the initial prices for a Swiss Travel Pass are quite high but it pays for itself if you get around via public transportation and are active in Switzerland for more than three or four days. So, check out prices for boats and trains and then calculate if it is a good option for you.

For me, it usually makes sense as I am very active and use public transportation/mountain rides often (even if I road trip Switzerland ).  I also love boat rides – which means many, many boat cruises for me whenever I have a Swiss Travel Pass.

Churches in Murten

Murten is home to some pretty churches, so don’t miss out! While they’re not the main attractions of Murten, it’s worth checking them out since you’ll most likely stumble upon one just by walking around in the old town.

Start off with a trip down memory lane and take a look at German Church – this bad boy has been standing for centuries; records as far back as the 14th century show that there was already an existing chapel here which later got rebuilt in 18th-century Baroque style.

And, if Gothic-style architecture turns your crank then French Church should be up on top of your list too – built during the 15th Century replacing an earlier chapel dedicated to St Catherine…

Murten is a small, sleepy, lakeside village west of Bern, on the southern shores of the beautiful Lake Neuchatel. The old city center is surrounded by a city wall, which is the main attraction; you can walk around the town on this wall and get a nice view of the town, lake and mountains in the distance. You can rent bikes at the train station for ride by the lake. The town has a cute main street with lots of cafes and some shopping. There aren’t any big sights, just a quiet old town to wander around for a couple hours. There’s also a nice playground (across from the Coop) just outside the city walls for the kids. It has a great water trough and sand pit, as well as slide, swings, and climbing structures.

Getting There

By car: Drive west on the A1, taking exit 29-Murten. Follow signs to the old town. There is city parking just outside the old city ring.

By public transport: Take a train to Bern, then another train to Murten. The train station is a short walk from the old city center.

Murten is also famous in the Swiss history thanks to the Battle of Murten on 22 June 1476. In fact, victory of the Confederates over the Burgundian army led by Duke Charles the Bold is still celebrated today. So, if you’re a history fan, you might want to check the Museum Murten where will find a rich collection of the 6,000-year history of the town and region.

For history enthusiasts, Lake Murten has a rich and fascinating past. The town Murten itself was established by Duke Berchthold the Fourth or the Fifth from the house of Zähringen in the 12th century. 1 There are well-preserved city walls and towers, which offer breathtaking views of the old town, the lake, and surrounding countryside.

The History of Lake Murten

Lake Murten , also known as Lac de Morat in French or Murtensee in German, is a freshwater lake located in the cantons of Fribourg and Vaud , Switzerland. As a whole, these three lakes form the Three Lakes Region .

The main tributary of Lake Murten is the Broye, an 89-kilometer-long river from the Fribourg Prealps. In terms of size, it covers only 22.8 km 2 with a length of 8.2 kilometers and a width of 2.8 kilometers. Today, Lake Murten is a peaceful lake enjoyed by both locals and tourists.

One of the best things to do in Lake Murten is to discover the Old Town of Murten . As a well-preserved medieval town, I can vouch that it is worth exploring.

With three long streets and a narrow lane crossing them, it has the typical Zähringer city layout. A castle, restaurants and shops built from yellow Jura limestone, the town hall, and fountains decorate the old town, including the Bern Gate from the second half of the 18th century.

Once you are done, you may also visit the Murten Museum to learn about the 6,000-year history and culture of the region. The museum, located in the former mill outside the city walls, features exhibits on the town’s history. There is also information about the Battle of Murten here.

Guided tours are available on Murten Tourism for those interested.

One of the best things to do in Lake Murten is to walk along the ramparts inside the walled city of Murten and enjoy the beautiful views of the old town. As a protective wall, the ramparts were designed to keep out invaders and built in several stages over time. The ramparts are free to access.

From the ramparts, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views . On one side, you’ll be treated to a picturesque sight of the medieval walled city, while Lake Murten stretches out beyond it. Once an important Roman settlement, Avenches is a municipality that used to be a Roman Colony called  Aventicum . It was, in fact, the capital of the province. Both the Romans and their predecessors, the Helvetians, made Avenches their capital. Evidence of its ancient past can still be seen today with its famous landmarks.

Many structures in Avenches are listed as  Swiss Heritage Sites of National Significance . These include the Avenches Castle, the Roman Museum, the Amphitheater, and more.

Visiting Vully is one of the best things to do in the Lake Murten region.

You can go hiking on its nature trails to and around Vully. What might be worthwhile to visit are the Mont Vully Caves. Known as Les Grottes des Roches Grises La Lamberta , these Lamberta caves are man-made tunnels that were excavated in sandstone. These caves were first built for soldiers, but now kids love to play in them instead of using them for defense.

Similar to Vully is the Vully-les-Lacs region. A land of vineyards, it is known for its excellent wines and also worth a visit.

8. Taking a Trip to Kerzers and Papiliorama

visit murten switzerland

Kerzers is a charming municipality renowned for its Grand Marais fields, the Althuus Museum, and Papiliorama , a butterfly and insect park. While Kerzers boasts a variety of attractions, my top recommendation among them is Papiliorama.

Papiliorama , in particular, is a captivating natural sanctuary that combines the elements of a zoo and a botanical garden, creating a unique experience. It is divided into three main sections and supplemented by other animal enclosures offering a diverse experience for visitors:

  • the Butterfly House – This is a large, enclosed space filled with tons of trees, plants, a tiny pond, and more in order to replicate the natural habitat of butterflies.
  • the Nocturama – This area is dedicated to showcasing the fascinating world of nocturnal animals.
  • the Jungle Trek – This area is s a recreated rainforest environment, similar to what you will find in parts of Asia and South America.

And the best time to visit Lake Murten will depend on the weather, crowd size, and activities you wish to take part in.

Generally, I believe that the best time to visit Lake Murten is during the summer months , from June to August, when it is warm and sunny. This will allow you to enjoy the lake as much as you can. Nonetheless, this is also the most crowded time of year, so expect higher prices and larger crowds.

On the other hand, if you prefer the quieter shoulder season , you can visit Lake Murten in early spring or late autumn.

Lake Murten

Lake Murten, nestled between the medieval town of Murten and the Fribourg Riviera with its vineyards on Mont Vully, is the smallest of the three Jura lakes. The small but charming lake with a cruiser service delights guests with its sandy beaches, is considered a water sports mecca and is surrounded by various hiking and biking routes.

Description

With an area of just 22.8 square kilometres, Lake Murten is the smallest lake in the Three-Lakes Region. Thanks to its shallow depth, it is quickly warmed by the sun and is a popular lake for swimming in from spring until autumn. So it’s hardly surprising that there are numerous beaches and campsites that can be found around the lake. Some of the most beautiful beaches are Salavaux , Europe’s longest natural freshwater sandy beach, Muntelier and Avenches . And the water sports mecca of Switzerland  offers even more for fans of the water: from stand up paddling to wakeboarding, and from waterskiing to windsurfing and sailing, the offer is almost limitless. Incidentally, thanks to the canals that connect the Jura lakes, sailors have an even greater area to explore.

Hiking or biking around the lake

Thanks to the manageable size of Lake Murten and the relatively flat terrain, cyclists and e-bikers are just as drawn to the lake as hikers. Countless cycling and hiking routes lead guests through the Lake Murten Region, with the round trip bike tour  and  gourmet tour around Lake Murten  as well as the  Lake Murten trail  coming highly recommended.

Boat trip: pure indulgence

For connoisseurs and sun worshippers, a boat trip on Lake Murten is well worthwhile . The round trip lasts a good hour. If you can’t get enough of the wind, choose the Two-Lakes Cruise , which takes guests through the Broye Canal to Neuchâtel (1.5 hours), or the three-hour Three-Lakes Cruise , which also takes guests through the Zihl Canal into Lake Biel and all the way to Biel/Bienne.

Murten: Stroll through the picturesque alleys of the old town

The small town of Murten  is situated on a hill on the southeastern shore of Lake Murten and owes its founding around the year 1170 to the Zähringers. The town has preserved its historical character with its picturesque old town alleys and pleasant arcades. Strolling through the pretty alleys is a must, as is a visit to the circular wall and a walk along the beautiful lakeside promenade. A walkway leads along the reed belt to the opposite lake shore in the vineyard area of Mont Vully.

Vully: The smallest of the great wine regions

Vully is the sun-kissed riviera of Lake Murten. Mont Vully , a hill chain between Lake Murten and Lake Neuchâtel, is a popular hiking area and offers a magnificent panoramic view of the lakes, the Jura chain and the Alps. Refreshing white wines thrive on the south-facing slopes. With 150 hectares of vines, the vineyard of Vully is the smallest of the great wine regions. In the pretty villages, numerous wine cellars invite you in for a tasting. Recommended themed hikes include the  Reblehrpfad (Viticultural trail Vully) , the Weinwanderung (wine hike) Vully  and the Historische Pfad (historical trail) Vully .

SlowUp: Travel at a leisurely pace

Every April at the SlowUp Lake Murten , the road around the lake belongs for once to non-motorised road users. Around 30,000 cyclists, inline skaters and pedestrians enjoy the car-free lake tour. A detour to the adjacent Grosse Moos, the vegetable garden of Switzerland , leads to the Gemüsepfad (vegetable trail) with its 60 vegetable varieties.

SWITZERLAND

A lakeside medieval town

The town has a history that precedes more than 6,000 years and, as the scene of a great battle, has played a major role in shaping Swiss history. Murten is known for its perfectly preserved and accessible city walls. Strolling through the old town, one can admire its arcades, but the eye is also drawn to the many beautiful fountains that adorn the streets. The municipality has always taken great care to preserve and maintain the fountains on its territory. The town council is therefore honoured that in 2009 Murten was awarded the Ernst and Hanna Hauenstein Foundation’s prize.

Furthermore, the museum of Murten is one of the oldest in the canton Fribourg.  Since 1978, it stands in the old water mill, situated under the surrounding walls of the city.

The permanent exhibition illustrates 6,000 years of the history of Morat and its area throughout its 5 levels. The various objects tell stories from a range of eras including the New Stone Age, Bronze age, Roman and the Medieval age. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the Museum Murten presents frequently changing exhibits. Various guided tours of Murten allow you to immerse yourself in this exciting history and expand your knowledge.

The town of Murten borders “Seeland”, one of the largest vegetable-growing areas in Switzerland. This attraction offers visitors the opportunity to discover the uniqueness of the organic fields in Switzerland’s largest vegetable garden.

As part of the cantonal project BIO Gemüse Seeland, Murten Tourism is committed to promoting sustainable tourism and organic farming in the Seeland. Through various offers and thanks to the collaboration with several partners, visitors can immerse themselves in the daily life of the region’s organic farmers and learn more about the origin of the vegetables on sale and about a more natural approach to farming, which is becoming more and more important in society today.

Murten Light festival

The village aims to become the Swiss capital of Light Shows. During the light festival, the old town and the surroundings of Murten display various light animations by regional and international artists. Every evening, visitors can experience the ultimate sound and light show, a spectacle that lasts several hours. The primary attractions of the festival include projections by light specialists from Spectaculaires on the school building in front of the Berntor , a show in the main alley, various installations in the museum, and a light and sound display in the German Church.

This initiative has proven extremely popular and has resulted in approximately 90,000 visitors to the village per year. National, international and regional artists present their animations and light messages on different arteplages “a steel structure erected in an exhibition hall depicting an artistic display”.

Economic strategy

Fighting seasonality with innovative products is a means by which the village has developed an economic development strategy. It plans to undertake several workshops with various partners to gain a thorough understanding of the needs of the main players in our economy and to respond with concrete measures.

The impact of tourism promotion will also be optimised through utilising a range of digital media measures. This work will be carried out in collaboration with the region’s tourism partners.

About Mürren and best time to visit

The mountain of Mürren lies on a terrace of 1650m, making it the highest village of the Jungfrau Region.

A double-cable ropeway leads up onto the plateau from Lauterbrunnen whereas a cableway runs from Stechelberg via. Gimmelwald into the center of this fairytale village.

Mürren is a former settlement from the people of Lötschen valley in the Valais. Its history is evidenced in the unique architecture of its houses and the pronunciation of the Mürren dialect.

A 30-minute ride in the cable car from Mürren takes you right to the summit of Schilthorn , 2970m high. Here, you can enjoy the breathtaking 360° view of the mountains that will leave you with a forever-lasting impression.

Peak of the Schilthorn

Adding to Mürren’s uniqueness is the fact that since the village cannot be reached by car, it is a completely traffic-free village – making it ultra-peaceful. A great location to visit with your family, Mürren offers everyone with a wide variety of excursions and sporting opportunities year-round.

It is an ideal location for hikers who wish to be surrounded by the vast and serene natural beauty that is typical of Switzerland. In winter, skiing is the main sport that is open to all levels of skiers.

As the small village is located on a plateau at the edge of a cliff, the town’s layout is long and narrow. It is around 900m from Mürren train station to Murren’s Schilthorn cable car station. From one side to the other, you can expect around 15 minutes of walk.

Murren

As you walk along the road between the two stations, you will witness the stunning views of the Bernese Alps and the valley below.

Things to do in Mürren

Take a ride to the schilthorn.

The Schilthorn Excursion is a world-famous location that boasts some of the most amazing views of the Jungfrau region. Lying at an altitude of 2970m it provides a full 360-degree panoramic view of the Swiss Alps, which you can enjoy from the world’s first ever revolving mountain restaurant. On a clear day, you may even see as far as Mont Blanc in France and the Black Forest in neighboring Germany.

The Bond movie “On Her Secret Majesty’s Service” was filmed here in the 1960s. Owing to this, you will find many Schilthorn James Bond-inspired attractions at Piz Gloria.

From Mürren a cable car takes you to the middle station Birg, where you change to another gondola. From here, you can reach the top of the beautiful Schilthorn. The entire series of cable car rides last a total of approximately 20 minutes and is a mesmerizing small adventure even before you reach the summit.

Visit the Jungfraujoch

The Jungfraujoch sits between the two peaks of Mönch and Jungfrau, connecting them at a level of 3464 meters above sea level.

The ascent to the top starts at Lauterbrunnen station and then on to Kleine Scheidegg, where you board the Jungfraubahn for the final journey to the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe.

visit murten switzerland

While you get mesmerizing beautiful views at the top, the train ride itself offers no shortage of breathtaking scenery. Get ready to be amazed by the insane snowy views of the 22 km Aletsch Glacier and those of the towering mountain peaks of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.

The day tour to Jungfraujoch costs around $170 and takes you to the top, where you can view the UNESCO-listed landscape from the Sphinx Observatory along with other summit attractions, and multiple indoor activities such as the Ice Palace.

Explore the Lauterbrunnen Valley

Lauterbrunnen is often referred to as The Valley of 72 Waterfalls. It is nestled between jagged cliffs and the towering mountains of the Swiss Alps. The famous writer J.R.R. Tolkien found his inspiration for the landscape in Lord of the Rings while hiking through the Swiss Alps in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Any fanatic of the franchise would immediately feel like they’ve been thrust into Middle-Earth as soon as they make their way through Lauterbrunnen’s steep rock faces.

On your visit to the Lauterbrunnen Valley, don’t skip visiting the village Lauterbrunnen itself. You will get a truly authentic experience of a typical Swiss village. The town might not be immense in size, but it’s certainly immense in its beauty. The village streets are lined with restaurants, cafés, hotels, varying shops, and a supermarket – enough to keep you browsing for a couple of hours.

Aerial View of the valley and Staubbachfalls above Lauterbrunnen

Small and large waterfalls alike are visible from Lauterbrunnen, with many waterfalls being easy to reach like the Staubbach waterfall. Standing tall at 300 meters, it’s the third-highest waterfall in Switzerland and among the highest free-falling waterfalls in the entirety of Europe.

Thanks to a viewing platform built into the rockface, one can get nearer and experience the glory of this waterfall up close.

Be thrilled at Birg – the Middle Station

The Birg Station – also called the Middle Station – sits at an altitude of 2677m. Situated at about 1000m above Mürren, it serves as an ideal starting point for hikers. But beside hiking there are more things you can experience here.

Birg

Firstly, the Birg Thrill Walk , that leads down into the walls of the imposing rock mastiff. Visitors walk along a 200m cliff pathway located under the Birg cableway station.

Furthermore there is the Skyline Walk. A platform with an observation deck situated over a vertical abyss, that provides exhilarating views of the surrounding mountains. There is also a bistro with a spacious sun terrace.

If you are a kind of a thrill-seeker, the Birg station is the perfect site for you to explore. The adrenaline rush you get while taking in the rugged mountain landscape around you is unmatched.

Your fear of heights will definitely be tested when visiting the Birg station. We definitely recommend taking it all in and enjoying the thrill!

If you are looking for a hike in the Murren area, there are a few options at your disposal:

1. Birg – Grauseeli – Birg Hiking Trail

A fairly easy hike, this trail goes from Birg over to the Seewald Fuhre and descends down to Grauseeli. Keep your camera ready as you don’t want to miss the opportunity to capture the mesmerizing reflection of the surrounding mountains in the clear lakes.

Schilthorn, Switzerland

2. Northface Hiking Trail

If you are looking for a little bit of a challenge but not something that would completely tire you, the Northface Hiking Trail is for you.

This is a medium difficulty trail where you will enjoy impressive views. Along the path you’ll find  12 informational panels which document the history of the mountains.

3. The Flower Trail

The Flower Trail is another easy hike that is a short 20-minute walk circling the Allmendhubel. As you take this hike in the summer months, you will discover up to 150 different mountain flowers along the way – an aspect that lends this trail its name.

Skiing in Winter

Skiing is a popular sport in Mürren, thanks to its location. Since it is the highest town in the Jungfrau region, you have the best chances of finding snow here, especially from late December to early March.

Mürren village on a winter night

There are over 50km of ski runs in the town with many of them providing a heightened level of adrenaline rush. There are also toboggan and walking trails. Therefore, everyone has a chance to enjoy the snowy winter here.

Other ski-related activities in Mürren include the Inferno ski race which takes place in January. The Inferno is one of the largest ski races in the world with over 1800 participants. The race spans a distance of almost 9 miles down the mountain – going from Schilthorn to Lauterbrunnen.

On the other side of the valley lies the ski areas of Wengen-Männlichen that you can reach easily. Here is the famous Lauberhorn ski race, which is part of the FIS Ski World Cup. With some of the fastest skiers gracing these slopes, you are sure to see a ton of action when out here. From Murren you can also travel to Grindelwald where even more exciting ski slopes are at your disposal. As a whole, the Jungfrau region alone offers more than 250km of pistes.

visit murten switzerland

The Mürren-Schilthorn has ski and snowboard pistes spanning 53 km. There is also an 11km cross-country ski trail in the valley between Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg.

The Via Ferrata

If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of a “Via Ferrata,” prepare to be amazed. You’ll ascend a mountain using a series of fixed cables, ladders, suspended bridges, and other climbing tools fixed to the rocks. The climber moves among these areas by clipping themselves with a safety harness to the attached steel cables. It provides a great way to experience the thrill of mountaineering without as much risk. It’s perfectly suitable for those who want something a bit more adventurous than hiking but aren’t quite ready to branch out fully into rock climbing.

Murren via ferrata

Inexperienced climbers should definitely go with a mountain guide for the first time.

The Via Ferrata in Murren takes you on a 2.2 km (1.4 miles) journey 610 meters ( 2000 ft) above the Lauterbrunnen Valley. It is a one-way trip that starts in Mürren and ends in Gimmelwald.

Keep in mind that the entire path is fully secured, so if you follow the safety rules there is no danger of a fall. However, it does have some sections with extreme exposure as you walk along the cliff face, where it is certainly better if you’re not afraid of heights..

This attraction is open to visitors from May to October.

How to get to Mürren

Mürren is accessible via train and cableway only since no cars are allowed. To reach Mürren, you can use one of two ways:

Graphic showing the different options to get from lauterbrunnen to mürren

The first method is to reach Lauterbrunnen by train first and then take a cableway from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp. From there, you can change to the narrow-gauge BLM train which brings you to  Mürren; the train station lies in the north of the village.

The second way is to go to Stechelberg by bus from Lauterbrunnen. From Stechelberg, you can take the cableway up to Mürren, with a change in Gimmelwald. The cable car station is in the south of the village. The cableway services in Stechelberg run every 30 minutes to Mürren.

The total travel time to Mürren is 20 minutes for Lauterbrunnen while for Stechelberg, it’s 32 minutes.

Cable car from Stechelberg to Gimmelwald

Towards Lauterbrunnen, services run every 30 minutes from Interlaken Ost station, with a journey time of 20 minutes. If you have a Jungfrau Travel Pass or Regional Pass Bernese Oberland, your travel would be completely free between Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen.

People traveling by car can either park in the garage in Lauterbrunnen before heading to Mürren or at the parking lot near the Stechelberg cableway station. Charges apply for both parking spaces.

It is recommended to travel by train or bus whenever possible. By doing this, you will save on parking costs which is beneficial because you wouldn’t need a car to explore the region anyway.
