For Costa Ricans, coffee is more than just a caffeine kick. The coffee bean is nicknamed grano de oro — the golden grain — in part because of how the industry has shaped the entire country’s development. As one of the world's top exporters, you won't find a better cup of coffee anywhere else. Even Pope Francis is a fan, calling Costa Rica's brew "the world's best coffee."

So if there's one truly authentic Costa Rican experience to have, it's a trip to a coffee farm. Here are the best five coffee tours to take.

The Costa Rica coffee tour experience

To truly understand Costa Rica's connection to the popular brew, a coffee tour is an excellent place to start. A traditional tour will begin with the history of coffee worldwide before guiding visitors through a farm to follow the process from seed to bean to cup.

Coffee is grown in mountainous regions across Costa Rica. Whether you arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport (near San José ) or Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (in Liberia ), you can be on a coffee farm within 30 minutes.

The best coffee-growing regions feature high altitude and volcanic soils that create an ideal climate for the plants. In Costa Rica, those conditions aren’t hard to find.

Naranjo, a historic village in the Central Valley , has been producing coffee for more than 150 years. There are  cafetales (coffee farms) in mountainous towns and regions such as Tarrazú, Tres Ríos, Orosí, Brunca and Turrialba. Each region will claim that their coffee is the best in Costa Rica, but it really all comes down to personal preference.

By law, virtually all coffee grown in Costa Rica is arabica, meaning it comes from the Coffea arabica plant first found in the Middle East.

Regardless of where in the country the plants are grown, when coffee berries are ripe, they’re harvested by hand.

The milled beans are bagged and exported. If the coffee is staying in Costa Rica, they’ll be toasted and packaged for sale. And if the beans have been processed as part of your tour, the guide might roast, grind and brew the freshest cup of coffee you’ve ever had.

Choosing a Costa Rica coffee tour

Much like a craft brewery tour, you’ll find that most coffee farmers in Costa Rica follow many of the same steps. What matters, then, is what region of Costa Rica you’re visiting and what type of tour interests you.

Coffee tours in Costa Rica’s Central Valley

The world’s best-known coffee company – Starbucks – runs Hacienda Alsacia , which is located just 30 minutes from the San José airport. In addition to the small-batch coffee they grow, Hacienda Alsacia is also researching climate- and disease-resistant variants. The 1.5-hour tour runs daily from 8am - 4pm with prices starting at US$30 for adults.

In the nearby city of Heredia (within 20 minutes of the airport) is Café Britt , the best-known brand of gourmet Costa Rican coffee. They’ve offered tours since 1991 and make the coffee found at upscale restaurants and gift shops across the country. Café Britt offers a variety of tours ranging from a 1.5-hour coffee-lovers tour (starting at US$26) to a six-hour coffee and adventure tour ($123).

Coffee tours in Monteverde/La Fortuna

Nestled in the mountain town of Monteverde , Don Juan offers a three-in-one tour that focuses on coffee but also highlights chocolate’s indigenous history and sugarcane production. Tours run daily at 8am, 10am, 1pm and 3pm and are fully accessible.

Across Lake Arenal, in La Fortuna , North Fields Cafe provides a similar experience in the shadow of Arenal Volcano. Daily tours run from 8am-4pm.

Coffee tours in Guanacaste

Guanacaste’s climate is better-suited for sugarcane, but the Tío Leo Coffee Tour — minutes away from Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport — is a worthy stop on your way to (or from) the Nicoya Peninsula ’s beautiful beaches. Morning tours run daily from 8am -11. Tickets are $25 per person.

Few activities will combine as much history and culture — not to mention flavor — into a single, quintessentially Costa Rican experience.

7 BEST Coffee Tours in Costa Rica (Local Coffee Plantations You Should Visit!)

This blog may contain affiliate links. Read our disclosure policy for more info.

Everyone who visits Costa Rica comes back raving about the lush tropical rainforests, waterfalls , and gorgeous sandy beaches . But it’s not just the stunning landscapes – in fact, the rich, delicious cups of Costa Rican coffee are just as memorable!

The coffee here is some of the best I’ve ever tasted in the entire world! Perfect growing conditions paired with the love and care Costa Ricans put into growing their coffee are just part of why I think this coffee tastes SO good. But don’t just take my word for it, see and taste for yourself!

During your travels around the country, you’ll likely see stretches of coffee fields growing on the hillsides. So carve out some time in your Costa Rican itinerary to stop and tour one of the plantations. You’ll not only get a cup of coffee (or two!) but see the entire process of where that great cup of coffee started. Plus, you’ll get your caffeine fix for whatever other activities in Costa Rica you might have planned that day!

We’ve narrowed down our list to include the absolute best coffee tours in Costa Rica. These are coffee plantations you don’t want to miss out on visiting! So grab a cup of coffee and read on.

History of Coffee in Costa Rica

Traditional Coffee grinder in La Fortuna, Costa Rica

Coffee has been a major part of the Costa Rican economy since the late 1700s. The Arabica coffee plant was first introduced in Costa Rica’s Central Valley region – right around San Jose – because the growing conditions were just right. There’s rich soil, a high altitude, and cooler temperatures. This allows coffee plants to grow and mature more slowly which leads to a complex and better-tasting flavor.

The Costa Rican Government soon realized how lucrative the coffee trade could be and began to offer free land to coffee farmers. By the 19th Century, Costa Rican coffee production exploded, surpassing most of Costa Rica’s other exports like tobacco, sugar, and cacao.

Now one of the things Costa Rica is known for is its delicious, flavorful, and perfectly roasted beans – they’re internationally recognized as some of the best coffee beans in the world. Even today, the country can’t keep up with the demand for this exceptional coffee. The country produces around 1.5 million bags of coffee every year, but that’s still only about 1% of all the coffee produced in the world.

During our stay in Costa Rica , we couldn’t get enough of the bold, delicious flavor of the coffee here. Plus, we loved that most of the coffee is grown sustainably and on small, fair-trade farms.

Needless to say, touring a coffee plantation is one of the best tours in Costa Rica – whether you’re a coffee drinker or not!

What is a coffee plantation?

A pathway leads through a coffee plantation in Costa Rica

A coffee plantation is basically a farm where coffee plants are grown. They are scattered throughout the country, especially in the fertile Central Valley region. You’ll likely see the green and brown coffee fields all along the hillsides if you’re driving around Costa Rica !

Coffee comes from a shrublike tree that’s usually planted on a slope to discourage erosion. The rolling hills of Costa Rica are a perfect location for the coffee trees to thrive.

Each coffee plantation has its own style and methods, and the conditions of the soil can affect the flavor of the bean – much in the same way that wine from different regions tastes unique.

On coffee plantations in Costa Rica, all the coffee is picked by hand! It’s the only coffee-producing country that does this! Harvest season runs from October to March when the coffee cherries are picked – so if you are visiting during this time, you might get to see the harvest in action.

The seeds (or beans) of the coffee fruit are then harvested and dried at the plantation where they are bagged and stored for future roasting. After roasting, the beans are ready to be enjoyed by coffee lovers around the world.

What makes coffee in Costa Rica so good?

Traditional coffee pot in Costa Rica

There’s nothing quite like a good cup of coffee … except maybe when you’re enjoying it on vacation in Costa Rica – am I right?! Part of the reason Costa Rican coffee is coveted around the world is due to its exceptional flavor.

This flavor starts early in the coffee-growing process thanks to the perfect mix of growing conditions. The volcanic soil is full of minerals and nutrients. That paired with a higher altitude (so the plants grow and mature more slowly) and a moderate to warm climate with lots of rain makes for the perfect recipe. Every year the temperatures only vary by about 10 degrees and there are only two seasons – rainy and dry. It’s not only why coffee thrives here, but it also means there are so many great times of year to visit Costa Rica !

While taking coffee tours and exploring the different coffee plantations, we also saw the love and care Costa Ricans put into growing their coffee. Around 90% of the coffee here is grown on small farms by local farmers. They have so much pride in what they do and the final product is incredible!

Throughout Costa Rica, there are eight coffee-growing regions and each of them produces a unique flavor profile. These flavors of the beans will vary significantly from region to region – from sweet and citrusy to dark and heavy and even chocolaty.

The eight coffee regions in Costa Rica are:

  • Valle Occidental
  • Tres Rios
  • Turrialba
  • Brunca
  • Orosi
  • Tarrazu
  • Valle Central
  • Guanacaste

What type of coffee is produced in Costa Rica?

Display showing the color of coffee beans at different stages of roasting in Costa Rica

Costa Rican coffee is 100% Arabica which is recognized as the highest quality coffee bean. They aren’t easy to grow, but they thrive here and produce the most flavorful coffee blends.

Costa Rica is the only country in the world where they don’t allow the production of anything less than 100% Arabica coffee beans. It’s actually illegal to produce any other type of coffee! This ensures every single harvest is of the highest quality.

The coffee made from these beans is smooth and full of flavor. And based on our experience, Costa Rican coffee is certainly among the best in the world!

We couldn’t get enough of it, and we weren’t alone. In the airports, you’ll see hundreds of travelers from around the world stocking up on bags upon bags of Costa Rican coffee beans to take home with them as a flavorful souvenir.

Why should you do a coffee tour in Costa Rica?

A guide shows us small coffee sprouts in Costa Rica during a guided tour

While having a cup of coffee at a local restaurant or picking up a bag of coffee at the airport on your way home is great, there’s something special about seeing where it all starts. Coffee production in Costa Rica has become an art, and the skill of growing and harvesting coffee has been passed down for generations. Coffee is a crucial aspect of Costa Rican culture and the economy.

The high standards of coffee production and the small, family-operated plantations allow local farms to thrive and encourage them to love their land and live sustainably.

Coffee tours invite you into that process and show you the unique history and culture that surrounds coffee production within the country. On a coffee tour, you will see the entire process, from growing the plants, to harvesting and drying the berries, to roasting the beans.

Some tours are more historically based, while others focus on hands-on experiences – such as picking or roasting the beans. Whichever one you choose, these tours are a great way to connect with Costa Rican locals who love what they do. It’s so fun and interesting, plus they are in beautiful settings around the country. You’ll leave with a greater understanding of the entire process, and probably a nice caffeine buzz to boot!

What are the best coffee tours in Costa Rica?

With so many coffee tours offered around Costa Rica, it can be difficult to choose which plantation to tour. During our stay in Costa Rica, we did quite a few tours and drank A LOT of coffee. We’ve narrowed down our list to include only our absolute favorites – the best of the best when it comes to Costa Rican coffee tours!

1. Costa Rican Coffee and Chocolate Crafting Experience (La Fortuna)

Traditional coffee brewer in La Fortuna, Costa Rica

If you’re visiting La Fortuna , after taking in the epic La Fortuna Waterfall and the Arenal Volcano, stick around the area for a little while and consider taking this Costa Rican coffee and chocolate tour . It’s perfect for both coffee lovers and chocolate lovers – and I’m both!

The North Fields Cafe farm is a small family-owned plantation, and you’ll have the opportunity to learn about every single step of the coffee-making process, from planting to taking a sip of warm, delicious coffee. In addition to coffee, they also grow cacao, so you’ll have the opportunity to prepare and taste chocolate as well.

If tasting coffee and chocolate isn’t enough, there’s even a special sugar cane tasting included. It’s a really thorough tour from La Fortuna with great information and the guides are super friendly and willing to answer any questions you have along the way.

The tour itself lasts 2.5 hours and you can choose from a morning or afternoon option, depending on when you want to have your coffee! Hotel pick-up is also offered if you’re staying in the La Fortuna area . The tour is only $43 USD and is a popular one, so it can sell out! Make sure you book online for your travel dates so you’ll have a guaranteed spot on this coffee tour .

2. Coffee Experience with Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Garden (San Jose)

Bailey at Poas Volcano in Costa Rica

This coffee experience tour is close to San Jose, where the country’s main international airport is, so it’s a perfect add-on to your trip right when you arrive, or just before you depart. It’s a full-day tour that includes some cool extras like a trip to the famous La Paz Waterfall, a hike at Poas Volcano , and a coffee-tasting experience at the Doka Coffee Estate.

This is a group tour, and you’ll depart around 6 am – perfect for those early birds, who love a good cup of coffee to start the day! You’ll be picked up from your San Jose hotel and head straight to the Doka Coffee Estate. You’ll enjoy a tasty breakfast which is included as part of the tour before embarking on a journey through the plantation.

We love that this tour includes insights into the traditional process of coffee growing and roasting. It’s very hands-on and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to participate before savoring a delicious sample of the coffee from the plantation.

After the coffee tour, you’ll head to Poas Volcano where you can hike the trail and take in the views of the epic crater. You’ll learn about the unique ecosystem and enjoy the region for about two hours.

Afterward, you’ll depart for the La Paz Waterfall Gardens where you can wander along the winding trails through the beautiful natural settings. You’ll likely spot wildlife like tropical birds , butterflies, and monkeys as well as countless plants. The rumbling river and the beautiful waterfall round out this incredible tour. It’s a great option for travelers who want to see it all, are looking for ideas on how to spend a day around San Jose , or anyone planning a honeymoon in Costa Rica !

3. Poas Volcano and Starbucks coffee farm (San Jose)

The big tanks at Hacienda Alsacia - Starbucks Coffee Farm

Starbucks addicts look no further than this unique tour which allows you to see the roots of your favorite Starbucks drink. The huge Starbucks Hacienda Alsacia plantation is a contrast to some of the small family-run farms on our list – but if you’re a Starbucks lover the experience can’t be beat.

This tour picks up at your hotel and lasts between 10-12 hours so it’s an all-day affair. First, you’ll head straight to Poas Volcano where you will have the opportunity to walk around and explore the cloud forest and volcano.

Admission to the volcano is included in the tour and it’s one of the best volcanoes in Costa Rica , so you’ll definitely want to see it! The hiking trail to the observation deck over the crater here is short and mostly along an access road that should take about 15 minutes. Then enjoy the view of the crater of this super active volcano – it’s erupted 39 times since 1828!

Then, you’ll head to the big commercial coffee farm purchased by Starbucks. It is their first (and so far, only) coffee farm. It’s located right at the base of the volcano, and they invite guests to rediscover coffee here. It’s very educational and there is a cool visitor center to explore. In addition to growing coffee, Starbucks is doing a lot of research about the farming practices at this location.

This full-day tour can be booked online through Viator and will give you bragging rights whenever you order coffee from your local Starbucks at home!

4. Doka Estate Coffee Tour (San Jose)

A large coffee packer in Costa Rica

We really loved the Doka Estate coffee plantation and our experience there on the tour we mentioned earlier. But if you don’t want to commit to a full-day version, this Doka Estate coffee tour is a great shorter option. The tour only lasts about 1.5 hours and hotel pick-up is included from the San Jose area in the $96 USD cost.

During this tour, you’ll learn about coffee as well as the production of sugar cane – another important Costa Rican export. The guides here are so knowledgeable about the entire coffee process, so feel free to ask questions! It’s also really hands-on as you follow how the perfect coffee bean is created from planting until roasting.

You’ll also get the chance to wander through the working sugar mill where you can see how sugar cane is transformed into sugar and molasses.

After your formal tours are done, you’ll have time to explore the butterfly garden on the property. There are hundreds of mini bonsai trees here along with a rainbow of orchids and of course butterflies!

With this tour so close to San Jose, it’s a good day trip from San Jose if you’re looking to get out of the city and explore a bit. If a coffee tour is on your to-do list, but you have a tight schedule, then book this short and sweet tour online !

5. Tio Leo Coffee (Guanacaste)

Grinding cacao on a Tio Leo Coffee Tour

If you’re staying in the gorgeous Guanacaste region (and trust us, you should!) consider this awesome coffee plantation tour at Café Tio Leo ! This tour is one of the most affordable options at $45 USD per person, and a great way to experience the tasty beans that come from this region.

Tours are offered in the morning at 8 am and in the afternoon at 1 pm daily. If you’re here during the summer (November-April), there are also evening tours starting at 4 pm. Tours last about 3 hours and they pack a lot in! You will need to get yourself here though, so consider renting a car to make the drive.

Tio Leo coffee is produced and harvested on the slopes of the Poas Volcano. It’s about 4,500 feet (1,370 meters) above sea level and the soil is rich in minerals and nutrients. You’ll be able to stroll around the coffee plantation to see the plants up close before you watch the coffee roasting process. There’s also a chocolate tour, sugar cane extraction, cooking class, and plenty of snacks!

Because you’ll be walking around the plantation, make sure you wear good walking or hiking shoes (no sandals!), a hat, and long pants. It’s also a good idea to bring some sunscreen and bug spray along.

You can check the availability of the tours and book online via their website . Each tour accommodates a maximum of 12 people, so it’s a smaller group that won’t make you feel lost in the crowd.

6. Coffee and Chocolate Tour (Manuel Antonio)

Daniel walks through a coffee plantation in Costa Rica

Manuel Antonio is one of the premier destinations in Costa Rica and easily one of our favorites. Along with the incredible Manuel Antonio National Park , you can also experience some of the region’s delicious coffee on this coffee tour .

After you’re picked up from where you’re staying in Manuel Antonio or Quepos, this tour includes both coffee and chocolate-making experiences so it’s a great option even if you don’t love coffee. The guides here are wonderful – they aren’t reading a script, just sharing their passion for this country and what it produces.

You get to try a traditional Aztec hot chocolate, coffee, and if you’re lucky even a cocktail made with ginger and sugar cane syrup! The chocolate tastings are a highlight too if you love chocolate as much as me! The orange-mint chocolate is especially good.

The tour is only $60 USD which is a fantastic deal for all it includes, making it one of the best Manuel Antonio tours on offer. You can choose either a morning or afternoon tour that will last 2-3 hours so you’ll still have plenty of time to hit the beach or check out some of the great restaurants in Manuel Antonio after you’re done!

This chocolate and coffee tour in Manuel Antonio can be easily booked online with Viator .

7. Don Juan Coffee and Chocolate Tour (Monteverde)

Coffee beans dry in Costa Rica (2)

While Monteverde is most famous for its Cloud Forest , this region also makes some excellent coffee! The Don Juan Coffee tour is offered by a family-run business that will take you through the entire coffee-making process.

Over the two-hour tour of the Don Juan Plantation , you’ll get an insight into coffee, chocolate, and sugarcane. You’ll learn how coffee goes from a seed planted in the ground to being harvested by hand and then turned into a delicious cup of coffee.

Then chocolate lovers rejoice – you get a full chocolate tour too! You’ll get to see cacao plants up close and may even have the chance to grind cacao beans to make your own chocolate bar. After the demonstration, you’ll get to taste different varieties of melt-in-your-mouth chocolate including dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and white chocolate.

Monteverde is known for being rainy, but luckily all the trails here are paved with cement – so no mud! It also means if you’re traveling with a stroller or wheelchair, the paths can easily accommodate that.

I loved this tour and thought it was one of the top things to do in Monteverde ! It was the perfect combo of being both fun and informative as we learned so much about all the work that goes into making these yummy treats.

You can book the tour online for $52 USD.

The BEST Things to do in Costa Rica

Bailey walks down steps to Rio Celeste Waterfall

While there are so many fun things to do in Costa Rica , a couple of specific attractions and activities stand out amongst the rest. They are:

Explore Volcanoes

There are some impressive (and beautiful!) volcanoes that you’ll want to check out while you’re here.

Poas Volcano is known for its bright blue crater lake. Poas Volcano is most commonly visited on a day trip from San Jose. This Poas Volcano tour from San Jose is one of the best you can do since it also includes a visit to the La Paz Waterfall Gardens as well as a coffee farm.

Arenal Volcano is also one of Costa Rica’s top attractions. Arenal Volcano is located closest to the town of La Fortuna. You can book this full-day tour from La Fortuna that takes you to the volcano to hike, the famous La Fortuna Waterfall and even a hanging bridge – it’s a full day of adventure!

Chase Waterfalls

La Fortuna Waterfall is one of our favorite waterfalls in all of Costa Rica. You can easily visit it on this full-day tour in La Fortuna that also visits hot springs.

Rio Celeste is another beautiful waterfall that is famous for its bright blue water. Rio Celeste is a popular attraction to visit from Guanacaste Province and this particular tour includes transport from there. Alternatively, you can book this tour from La Fortuna or this tour from San Jose .

See the wildlife

Costa Rica is the place for wildlife lovers! One of the best places to see lots of animals in their wild habitat is at Manuel Antonio National Park . With the help of a guide you will see plenty of birds, monkeys, and even sloths! This particular tour is super popular and also has amazing reviews, so you really can;t go wrong.

There are also lots of wildlife rescue centers around the country that are worth visiting. The Jaguar Rescue Center in Puerto Viejo is one of our favorites as well as Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center in San Jose where you can book this private tour.

Getting Around Costa Rica

Bailey with our rental car near Rio Celeste Costa Rica

How you choose to get around Costa Rica is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your holiday here! How you do it depends on your budget, travel style, and comfort level.

Renting a Car

Without a doubt, the number one way to explore Costa Rica is in a rental car. We book rental cars on the Discover Cars website as we have had good experiences with them in the past.

One of the things you need to watch for when renting a car in Costa Rica is the mandatory insurance that the government requires you to have. There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book.

Thankfully, on Discover Cars it’s easy to tell apart the companies that include the mandatory insurance and those that don’t. The trick is you can’t pick any car on their website. In the picture below, you can see this rental car, with pick up in Jaco, includes the TPL. That means the mandatory insurance is included in the price. Any cover you get above that is extra.

Of course, I still suggest getting the full coverage offered by Discover Cars, which covers you even more.

You can  browse cars on Discover Cars here .

TPL Cover Costa Rica

Book Shuttles

If renting a car isn’t in your budget, you don’t feel comfortable driving in Costa Rica , or you just don’t like driving, shuttles are the next best option. There are hundreds of shuttle routes available all over the country, and they are very affordable.

Shuttles in Costa Rica are specifically for tourists and often include pick up and drop off at your selected hotels and airports. The drivers also speak some English, and the vehicles have air conditioning. You’ll also be guaranteed a seat when you book a shuttle (which isn’t the case with the public bus system.)

To get the best price, use the website  Bookaway . They compare all the offers and prices of shuttle companies in Costa Rica so you get the best price! Honestly, we have saved so much money using Bookaway!

You can search for shuttles online on Bookaway here.

Lastly, you can use the public bus system. On short journeys, such as from San Jose to La Fortuna or Uvita to Manuel Antonio, this system is great. However, the longer the journey the more hassle and time spent on a bus. It’s undoubtedly best to save the public bus in Costa Rica for short and straightforward trips!

The public buses are definitely the cheapest way to get around Costa Rica, but they are not always very reliable and schedules often change without notice and delays are to be expected. The buses can also be very crowded and hot – so just be prepared!

It’s also good to speak some Spanish if you plan on riding the public bus since most drivers and ticket booth operators don’t speak English.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance!

If you’re looking to save money on travel insurance, we currently use and recommend  SafetyWing . We’ve been using their coverage since 2018 and they’ve had our backs when we needed emergency flights and got sick overseas.

SafetyWing is one of the cheapest providers out there and covers everything from medical costs to lost luggage, travel delays, and emergency flights. A huge difference we’ve found between them and other companies is that they let you take out a policy AFTER leaving your home country. We’ve also found it handy that it’s a monthly payment rather than a lump sum, and you can get a refund for unused time.

SafetyWing has helped us out in some scary situations before and their affordable coverage has given us peace of mind.

About us...

We are a small company located in Guardia de Liberia, Guanacaste. The brand Tio Leo accidentally born there in October 2014 , when a group of friends gathered begin to contribute ideas to put into practice during the season to come. From there arises the idea of my friend to this day , Benito Guigni , taking a picture and start creating the character that , today, we have as our logo in my personal brand.

Coffee Tio Leo is known for offering its distinguished consumers a product of the highest quality and for this only processes the best of our grain , produced and harvested at an elevation of 4500 feet above sea level on the slopes of the volcano Poas, which provides our grain unparalleled wealth in minerals and nutrients found in these lands. Our grain comes from the cream of the crop of the farm Doka Estate, which guarantees an end product for our customers and export quality . We invite you to visit our factory in Guardia de Liberia , Guanacaste, Costa Rica, where they will be warmly received personally by Tio Leo and also have the opportunity in the vast world of coffee where we will take you through its history and process in our coffee tour .

Our coffee...

Everything begins in the heights of the Poas volcano, where all the conditions are gathered to guarantee a growth and an incomparable quality of fruits. Our fruits, selected by expert hands, our beans, dried under the sun of Costa Rica guarantee a coffee with powerful aromas, roasted in a craft way for an exceptional coffee.

Peaberry, known in Spanish as caracolillo, is a type of coffee bean. Normally the fruit (“cherry”) of the coffee plant contains two seeds (“beans”) that develop with flattened facing sides, but sometimes only one of the two seeds is fertilized, and the single seed develops with nothing to flatten it. This oval (or pea-shaped) bean is known as peaberry. Typically around 3% of all coffee beans harvested have experienced this small mutation.

Normal coffee beans are less commonly called by contrast flat berry.

The degree to which coffee beans are roasted is one of the most important factors that determine the taste of the coffee in the cup. Before roasting, green coffee beans are soft, with a fresh “grassy” smell and little or no taste. The coffee roasting process transforms these raw beans into the distinctively aromatic, flavorful, crunchy beans that we recognize as coffee.

Other factors of course enter into the complex equation that determines your coffee’s taste. Two coffee varieties, from different countries of origin or grown in different environments, are likely to taste quite different even when roasted to the same level (especially at light to medium roast levels). The age of the coffee, the processing method, the grind, and the brewing method will also affect the taste. But the roast level provides a baseline, a rough guide to the taste you can expect.

More Facts about our Coffee Tour

Why is our coffee plantation tour so unique:.

The plantation’s specialty coffee is the only one produced and exported from a Blue Zone; there are 5 places in the world characterized by the highest levels of healthy longevity.

Nicoya – Guanacaste in Costa Rica is the most extensive Blue Zone in the world.

Blue Zone coffee thrives in the elevated hills of Hojancha, Santa Cruz, and Nicoya within the Nicoya Peninsula, situated at altitudes ranging from 500 to 1,000 meters. Cultivating Caturra, Catuaí, and Costa Rica 95 varieties, it’s a Pacific Hard Bean coffee. Our partners receive dedicated technical assistance to ensure sustainable coffee production, meeting market quality standards. Sustainable Coffee Growing for us involves incorporating organic matter into the soil, introducing shade trees, and implementing low-impact agricultural practices. Social considerations are integral to our approach. During harvest, our farmers generate employment for neighboring citizens in production areas for a 5-month period.

Coffee enthusiasts can talk for hours about Costa Rican beans, and even casual drinkers are blown away when they taste their first authentic brew. These mindful moments in Costa Rica are more essential than ever.

background

What Makes Costa Rica Coffee Special

Since the first beans were brought from Cuba in 1779 Costa Rica has flourished as one of the best coffee-growing regions in the world. By 1832, grano de oro (the golden grain) had become one of the primary exports of Costa Rica and contributed greatly to its economic development. The country’s warm climate with both wet and dry seasons, steep elevations and fertile, volcanic soil create the perfect conditions for growing coffee beans. Costa Rica is known for its prized arabica beans in Caturra and Catuaí varieties. Planting Robusta beans has been prohibited by law and cultivating high-yielding Catimores was discontinued in order to preserve coffee quality.

On small farms, cherries ripen slowly – creating a smooth, more intense flavor – and are handpicked by farmers. Costa Rica also pioneered the “honey” process that has since been adopted worldwide, a technique that involves de-pulping and washing coffee cherries after fermentation while preserving some mucilage  – creating sweet, fruity notes to enhance the flavor.

Sustainability Matters

Costa Rica has long led the way in sustainable practices throughout the nation, and its coffee farmers are no exception. The country produces nearly 93% of its electricity from renewable resources and 26% of its territory is protected natural land. In the coffee industry, specifically, processes are being introduced like using drip irrigation to reduce water consumption and growing beans under canopy shade to encourage biodiversity and protect against pests and disease.

Where to Find a Coffee Experience in Costa Rica

Coffee is grown in eight distinctive regions in Costa Rica: Burnca Region, Turrialba, Tres Ríos, Orosi, Tarrazú, Central and Western Valleys, and Guanacaste. Owners of mills in each coffee-growing region signed the Agreement to Improve Quality, committing to the manual and selective harvesting method, in which only ripe cherries are selected. Throughout any of these regions, you can choose from different types of excursions and tours to see the process for yourself.

A farm tour is one of the most popular options, led by a knowledgeable local. Your coffee excursion begins with a stroll through lush fields where the coffee cherries flourish. Learn about cultivation practices that have been passed down for generations, from planting and harvesting to the delicate art of bean selection. You’ll engage all of your senses as you rub the leaves between your fingertips, listen to the rhythmic hum of the mill, inhale the fragrance as raw beans are transformed into grounds, and finally have a chance to sip the delicious brew.

On a plantation tour, you can get a firsthand look at large-scale operations, often integrating modern technology with traditional practices. Expand your palate on a tasting tour as you try a variety of blends, picking up on subtle aromas as you learn how the terroir, curing and roasting techniques can influence the

flavor. You can pair your coffee tour with experiences in chocolate and sugarcane, or try a cultural coffee tour that weaves in elements of history, art and music. For those seeking even more adrenaline than a good cup of coffee can deliver, try an adventure tour that includes hiking or biking to picturesque farms and plantations.

In beautiful Costa Rica, you’ll also find the first and only Starbucks coffee farm, Hacienda Alsacia . Here, Starbucks mission is to create best practices to make growing coffee more profitable for small-scale farms; develop the next generation of disease-resistant, high-quality coffee; and share information and resources freely with farmers around the world.

How to Enjoy Costa Rica Coffee

Whether you’re at the height of a farm tour or enjoying a traditional breakfast of gallo pinto and plantains, a hot cup of Costa Rican coffee is waiting for you. Traditional Costa Rican coffee is known as aguas de medias, or “sock water.” Why? Because it’s prepared in a wooden chorreador that suspends a tubular cloth filter (bolsita, or “small bag”). Fill the bag with hot water, spoon in the coffee grounds and the sock acts like a drip coffee filter to create a brew that is strong and rich without being overpowering. Add milk or cream and sugar to your liking, and you’ve just recreated your own authentic Costa Rican coffee experience!

Get a deeper sense of Costa Rican culture on a coffee experience, and you’ll likely come home a fan for life.

7 Best Costa Rica Coffee Plantation Tours

You have heard about Costa Rica’s wildlife, lush rainforest, and the breathtaking beaches, all of which have made it famous. There is, however, another reason to add Costa Rica to your travel bucket list: coffee.

Besides winning prestigious awards in international competitions, Costa Rican coffee has grown to be much more than an economic boost to the local culture. This brief guide will show you where you can enjoy this tasty tradition on your next trip. Read on for some history, faqs, and locations dedicated to Costa Rican coffee culture.

Let’s start with some  hist or ical  facts  about the golden grain!

After Costa Rica declared its independence in 1821, the newly established government saw the big potential of coffee as means for economic and social development. The central authorities provided many financial incentives to coffee farmers and gradually became one of the main crops produced in the Central Valley, and often referred as “ el  grano  de  oro ”,  in English the golden grain (Instituto del Café de Costa Rica).

Why is Costa Rica’s coffee so good?

Costa Rica offers a combination of ideal conditions to produce quality coffee beans: higher altitudes, fertile soils of volcanic origin combined with cool climates and steady rainfall, produces beans with fine flavors and aroma.

What variety of coffee is produced in Costa Rica?

For quality control, since 1989, 100% of the coffee produced in Costa Rica is arabica beans (Promotora del Comercio Exterior de Costa Rica).

Great beach and even better pools: A review of family-friendly all-inclusive resort Dreams Las Mareas Costa Rica

Mackenzie Roche

Editor's Note

Costa Rica is a popular destination for tourists seeking beach relaxation, jungle adventures and prime wildlife viewing opportunities. It also happens to be one of our top destinations of 2024 because of its sustainable travel opportunities and a smattering of new hotel openings.

While Dreams Las Mareas Costa Rica isn't a new property — it opened in 2014 — it's one that deserves recognition for its stunning pools and family-friendly environment. Not to mention, it has a multitude of on-site activities and entertainment options that appeal to guests of all ages. And since it's part of the Hyatt family, there are many ways to book a stay using points, too.

What is Dreams Las Mareas?

Dreams Las Mareas is a large, all-inclusive beachfront resort in the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica, near the Nicaragua border. It sits on the calm bay of Playa El Jobo and is surrounded by a verdant jungle.

With 447 guest rooms, a spa, three pools, eight restaurants and eight bars and lounges — among other enticing amenities — it's hard to get bored here. The ample amount of event space also makes it suitable for large corporate events or weddings.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

The resort is part of the family-friendly Dreams Resorts & Spas brand, which falls within Hyatt's Inclusive Collection. All rates here include meals and drinks (including alcoholic beverages) at the eight on-site bars and eight restaurants.

Booking details

Hyatt loyalists will be happy to know that they can earn and redeem their points with a stay here. For one night in mid-June, the cash rate for a junior king suite is $692 for World of Hyatt members.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

The same room on the same date costs 21,000 World of Hyatt points. According to TPG's valuations , you would save $336 by using points instead of cash to book.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

When booking Dreams Las Mareas, you'll want to use one of the credit cards that earn the most points for Hyatt stays , and possibly one that offers automatic World of Hyatt elite status for value-added benefits. These include:

  • World of Hyatt Credit Card : Earn 4 points per dollar spent at Hyatt hotels and resorts, automatic Discoverist status, and five elite night credits per year toward a higher tier.
  • World of Hyatt Business Credit Card : Earn 4 points per dollar spent at Hyatt hotels and resorts, automatic Discoverist status, and five elite night credits per year toward a higher tier.

Getting there

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

Dreams Las Mareas is about 56 miles north of Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, and the drive takes between one and two hours. Toward the end of the drive, you'll be treated to panoramic views of the bay, and you can even catch a glimpse of a volcano in Nicaragua.

You can book an airport transfer through the resort's partnership with destination management company Amstar, and you'll find the Amstar counter in the airport right after customs. All I had to do was give the representatives my name, and after offering me a beverage, they walked me to the parking lot to meet my friendly driver.

If you don't want to go the Amstar route, there are plenty of other airport shuttle companies to book with in advance. Taxis are also readily available at the airport in Liberia, and it will probably cost at least $100 for the 1 1/2-hour drive.

Checking in

Friendly staff members greeted me when my car pulled up, and I had a glass of sparkling wine in hand within seconds of my arrival. I was impressed by the open-air lobby's soothing water features and colorful accents as the staff guided me through.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

Since I was a preferred guest — a status you can receive by booking one of the club-level rooms or suites — the staff showed me to the private check-in area in the preferred lounge located off the lobby. (Preferred guests can use their room keys to enter and take advantage of this lounge anytime during their stay.)

The check-in process was quick, and before I knew it, I was in a golf cart on the way to my room. My personal concierge, Joseph, came along for the ride and gave me his contact information so that I could text him with any questions.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

I also downloaded Hyatt's Inclusive Collection app, which was an important tool throughout my stay. On the app, you can look up restaurant menus and hours, check out the property map, see the daily calendar of events, schedule housekeeping, book spa treatments and order room service.

A spacious room with nice outdoor area

The property houses 447 guest rooms, including standard and suite-style rooms. Some have ocean views, tropical views or pool views, while others have terraces with swim-out access or private hot tubs.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

I stayed in a king swim-out junior suite, which was a corner unit featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that offered beautiful views of my private pool. The combination of earth-toned decor, rich wood furnishings and red accents brought a sense of elegance into the space.

Outside, the terrace featured a comfortable couch and coffee table, separated from the neighboring patio by a half-wall.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

Inside the room, there were plenty of lighting options, but it felt a bit dark due to its ground-floor location. Still, the bed was comfortable, and the blackout curtains made it easy to sleep. I felt safe on the ground floor thanks to the double locks on the sliding glass door.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

The room's small round table and two chairs could serve as a place to work if necessary. (I even found some goodies waiting on this table when I arrived.)

Below the wall-mounted 42-inch TV was a dresser with three storage drawers and two cabinets. The left cabinet held a well-stocked minifridge with Imperial beer, juice boxes, soda, and bottles of still and sparkling water. In the right cabinet, I found snacks, cups, three small bottles of liquor and a Cuisinart coffee machine.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

I chose to store my luggage on the rack next to the dresser, but there was also space in the large wooden wardrobe beside the front door. The wardrobe held hangers, extra blankets, robes, slippers, an umbrella, a safe and a steamer (no iron).

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

The bathroom and double-sink vanity area could be separated from the main sleeping area by drawing a long curtain, but I chose to leave it open to get more sunlight throughout the suite.

If I had forgotten one of my toiletry items, I would have been in luck since the vanity had an extra toothbrush, toothpaste, a comb and more. A magnifying mirror and hair dryer rounded out the bathroom amenities.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

The shower and toilet were each separated from this space with a swinging glass door.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

When booking, you'll have the option to select a regular room or a "Club Level" room. As mentioned above, staying in one of these club-level rooms makes you a preferred guest. Preferred guests can utilize the Preferred Club Lounge throughout their stay, which offers a bar, a buffet with snack-size meals and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. These guests can also access a preferred pool and enjoy a la carte breakfast options in the Portofino restaurant (instead of being restricted to the main buffet at World Cafe).

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

In my opinion, booking a club-level room is worth it if you're traveling as a couple or just want an overall relaxing experience. If you're traveling with kids, who might not appreciate a nicer breakfast, lounge access or the other perks, a club-level room might not be worth the extra cash.

Dining options

There are eight restaurants and eight bars at Dreams Las Mareas, so there was plenty of variety when it came to dining options. I can't say the food was the highlight of my stay; however, the staff was always friendly, and it was fun to explore all the different venues. I had conversations with some other guests, and it seemed like they all shared a similar sentiment.

During my visit, the resort happened to be hosting a large corporate event, so my concierge, Joseph, helped me make reservations to ensure I could eat where I wanted.

On the first night of my stay, I enjoyed dinner at Himitsu, which serves pan-Asian cuisine and hibachi. (If you want to secure a spot for the hibachi experience, reservations are always a good idea.)

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

To start, I sampled a traditional Costa Rican guaro sour at the recommendation of my waiter, and I liked it more than I thought I would.

I then ordered a miso soup, a delicious sushi sampler and a seaweed salad (the latter of which I probably wouldn't have ordered again). My waiter insisted I should try the fried ice cream for dessert, and it was a production, to say the least. He heated up toppings and played with fire before putting the steaming dessert on a plate in front of me — a fun way to end the meal.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

This is the place to be in the morning if you're staying in a club-level room, as the breakfast is exclusively for preferred guests. There are a la carte options available, or you can go next door to get food from the World Cafe buffet and bring it back to eat in Portofino.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

I ordered one savory breakfast dish and one sweet breakfast dish, for research purposes, of course. The omelet was pretty tasty, and the pancakes were one of my favorite things I ate at Dreams.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

At night, Portofino is open to all adult guests and serves Italian favorites, including soups, salads, risottos, pasta dishes and pizza. The dress code here is "casual elegance," which is a bit nicer than at some of the other on-site restaurants, and it seems like the food follows suit.

World Cafe offers buffet-style dining for breakfast and lunch.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

There were plenty of basic options, such as eggs, fresh fruit and baked goods, alongside omelet stations and rotating specials like chilaquiles. However, I noticed there weren't many meatless options or really any vegan-friendly dishes aside from salads.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

Parents will appreciate the kids buffet area, where their children can independently serve themselves dishes that might appeal more to their palettes.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

Seaside Grill

This lunch and dinner option beside the pool has a nice open-air design, so you can still enjoy the pool atmosphere while dining.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

The menu offers various seafood dishes, burgers and sandwiches, as well as grilled specialties, all fitting for a light lunch.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

I tried the couscous salad, which wasn't my favorite, but the falafel sandwich on pita made up for it.

Although the staff was very friendly at this Mexican restaurant, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for anything other than a margarita (I got the passionfruit one).

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

I sampled the corn esquites and a vegetarian burrito but wasn't a huge fan.

This is the resort's gift shop and cafe, where you can get a sandwich, a coffee or a scoop of gelato at any time of day. The gift shop was very well stocked with souvenirs, clothes, sunscreen and any type of toiletry item you might need. I stopped by a few times throughout my stay for a coffee and never found it crowded.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

I didn't get the chance to try the sushi restaurant, Gohan, or the seafood restaurant, Oceana, for dinner, but they both seemed to have a nice ambience. Oceana's menu has options like clam chowder, ceviche and salmon — and an ocean view on the side.

Pro tip: If you're celebrating a milestone or event during your trip, you can book a beachfront dining experience to make dinner extra special.

A pool everywhere you look

This resort excels in the pool department — no matter where you are, you'll never be too far from loungers and turquoise water.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

Technically, there are three main pools (not including the ones that border the swim-out guest rooms): the upper pool, lower pool and adults-only pool. But, it feels like there are more.

That might be because one of them is a whopping 44,000 square feet. You can find this massive pool in front of the main building that houses all the restaurants. This location makes it easy to grab a quick bite whenever you want and then return to your lounger.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

Directly beside it, there's a small kiddie pool area with a rock climbing wall and trampoline to add to the fun. There's also a waterslide at the upper pool, which I could hear many children enjoying while I was walking around. The pool bar in this area also serves pizza — a convenient place to stop when the kids get hungry.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

The other main pool is about a two-minute walk away. It snakes around the beachfront area, and with so many different sections, it feels like a bunch of little pools combined.

One of these sections belongs exclusively to preferred guests. I didn't have to show any documentation proving I was a preferred guest in order to enter, but one of the staff members told me they keep tabs on who is using the preferred pool. The preferred area has its own bar and daybeds to rent.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

There's also a lively pool area with a swim-up bar called Manatees. This area was always pretty packed during the day and offered a party atmosphere, complete with loud pop music.

coffee tour costa rica guanacaste

The entire pool is bordered by chairs and daybeds. I didn't notice a ton of empty loungers at peak times, but it wasn't overwhelmingly crowded either.

The Seaside Grill and Oceana restaurants are on one side, and the Barefoot Grill — which serves quick bites and can have pretty long lines — is on the other. So, you'll never need to walk far to get refreshments during your pool day. You can also see the beach from this area of the pool, and it's a nice place to be at sunset.

Dreams Las Mareas is situated on Playa El Jobo, and this stretch of sand is impressive, size-wise, compared to other hotel beaches I saw in the region.

Since it's in a large cove, there are calm waves and safe swimming conditions for children.

Should you want to rent water sports equipment, you can do so at the Amstar hut beside the beach.

There are also some independent vendors on the beach who will offer you tours when you hit the sand. Some of the ones I spoke to were selling off-site excursions and Jet Ski rides.

There aren't a ton of beach chairs, but the beach was also never crowded when I was there. It seemed like most guests enjoyed being at the pools instead.

One section of the beach is reserved for preferred guests and has cushioned loungers and bar service.

The resort offers plenty of activities here to keep guests busy, including beach volleyball games and a beach party. You can easily check the event schedule on the app.

plenty of treatment options at the spacious spa

Guests in search of relaxation can book a treatment at the hotel's 16,000-square-foot Dreams Spa. It offers a full-service salon, 10 private treatment rooms and a snack bar area.

In the salon, there are manicure and pedicure areas, a hairdressing space and even a fish footbath experience. If you're visiting Dreams for your wedding, the spa also offers a separate bridal suite complete with a dress stand.

In between the changing rooms and the main treatment area, there was a relaxation room with plenty of chairs as well as a snack bar area with tea, fruit, cookies and snacks.

I got the chance to try the hydrotherapy circuit at the back of the spa area. Use of this self-guided circuit is included with spa treatments that last 80 minutes or more. I started the circuit with time in the sauna and steam room, then followed the numbered signs through the rest of the pools; it ended with a hot tub and cold plunge.

It was a relaxing way to spend an hour, and I felt pampered when a staff member brought out a healthy drink to enjoy during the experience.

Around the water feature lined with teardrop-shaped covered sofas, you'll find private treatment rooms. You can book a massage (from $215), a facial (from $175), a manicure (from $65) or any other relaxation experience you can think of. These treatments are not included in your room rate.

The spa is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, and the minimum age is 16.

Lots of entertainment options and activities

Each day of your vacation, you can consult the activity schedule on the app to see what's happening. During my stay, I saw beach volleyball games, a nighttime dance performance, a live violin show in the Rendezvous bar area and a movie projected on a big screen by the pool.

If you want to leave the resort for an excursion at any point, you can book a tour directly on Amstar's website. The company offers a variety of guided activities throughout the Guanacaste region, including rainforest hikes, whitewater rafting trips, ATV tours and horseback riding experiences. Keep in mind these tours come at an extra cost.

However, the resort does offer a complimentary excursion for guests: They can choose between the Culture And Adventure Mega Combo tour and the Palo Verde, Liberia City Tour And Llanos Del Cortes package.

Kids can enjoy the Explorers Club, which is geared toward ages 3-12. It offers crafts and video games for entertainment. Parents can drop their kiddos off sometime between 9 a.m. and 9:45 p.m. The Core Zone Teens Club can keep older kids ages 13-17 occupied at night with social events and games. It's open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The resort also has a fitness center near the spa with ellipticals, treadmills and free weights. However, for a massive resort, I was surprised by the small size of the fitness center.

Reasons Dreams Las Mareas might not be for you

Traveling with a large group with a wide age range? This Dreams property will be a great fit. However, here are some instances when it might not be the ideal choice:

  • If you're looking for a quiet stay, you may be happier elsewhere. While there are certainly some peaceful areas around the property, the pool bar can get rowdy during the day, and there are plenty of people out and about at all times.
  • As is pretty typical with all-inclusive resorts, the food isn't the main draw. If you're a foodie who wants to spend vacation time indulging in fine dining experiences, this probably isn't the place for you.
  • It takes 1 1/2 hours to get here from the airport, so if you want a spot for a quick overnight, consider one of the all-inclusive options just 30 minutes from LIR.

Accessibility

According to Hyatt, Inclusive Collection properties provide fully equipped accessible rooms upon request. Potential Dreams guests should contact the hotel in advance to request these rooms — which are on the first floor with larger bathrooms and bars for stability, among other features.

However, the Inclusive Collection's terms also state that it cannot guarantee the availability of accessible rooms or availability of wheelchairs on-site or at the airport. The Dreams staff confirmed this after I called and spoke to several members of the staff.

At this Dreams property, there were golf cart services to transport guests around the property and ramps next to most small sets of stairs. I also noticed elevators in the main building. While the pool areas are wheelchair accessible, I couldn't locate any pool lifts.

There's a small ramp to the beach, but I couldn't get a definitive answer about whether beach wheelchairs are available to guests.

Checking out

Overall, I had a lovely stay at Dreams Las Mareas, and I would be happy to return to experience the pools, beach and off-site excursions that I didn't get a chance to try.

While there were some large group events occurring during my stay, it never really felt overwhelming or overcrowded. The restaurants and pools are clearly built to accommodate many guests at once. Some of the restaurants are certainly better than others, but thanks to the well-maintained pools and the easy beach access, you probably won't care too much about the food anyway.
