Our History

On the Road Theatre Company was created in 2001 with the aim of taking educational shows over to schools to provide both students and teachers with a powerful tool for language acquisition in the comfort of their premises. Since then, thousands of students have watched and enjoyed our shows which serve as triggers to work on the activity packs we provide.

Twenty years later, On the Road developed audiovisual productions of  some of their shows which stand as an excellent educational tool to work on the topics each title deals with. They can be watched on any device and the activity packs have been crafted to use PBL (Project Based Learning).

Since 2019 teachers from all over the world have been taking professional training regarding theatre, applied drama and script writing and how to apply it to their schools’ activities at our Drama Teacher Training School. Seminars, workshops and professional coaching is offered worldwide online.

Our In House option allows your staff to be trained by our professionals in the flesh and help you out with your School Concert, Open classes, Book Fair presentations and any live event at school.

10 of the best: Theatre productions for schools in 2020

2020-01-21T11:23:00+00:00

We’ve picked 10 theatre shows for pupils to see this year, each offering an exciting trip opportunity and an educational programme.

The Lion King

The Lion King won the Best Theatre Production for Schools Award at the 2019/20 School Travel Awards.

From the topics of world faiths and anti-bullying to writing and performance, plenty of key skills can be developed through theatre shows in the West End and beyond. Here are our 10 of the best for 2020:

1. The Lion King

Winning the 2019/20  School Travel Award for Best Theatre Production for Schools, The Lion King has already seen over a million pupils getting much out of the critically acclaimed show’s education programme. The well-known story following Simba, the prince cub of the savannah, can tie into studies of animal characteristics and cycles, friendship and arts and crafts.

The stage adaptation of the Disney animation is currently taking bookings until 5th July, at the Lyceum Theatre in London. Its curriculum-linked resources have been developed by teachers, supporting Key Stage 2 to 4 learning, and are available on The Lion King’s online hub .

2. Witness for the Prosecution

School groups can step into a unique theatre setting at the London County Hall to see Witness for the Prosecution , a classic Agatha Christie play about a man, Leonard Vole, who is on trial for murder.

Educational groups of eight to 50 students can take a trip to the venue, where they can learn about its history as local government headquarters before seeing the show as though seated in the jury, right in the heart of the courtroom drama. Tickets are on sale until 13th September with special rates for schools on Tuesdays to Fridays. Find the seating options and more information at www.witnesscountyhall.com/tickets .

Wicked

Source: Darren Bell

The Wicked musical tells the ‘untold story’ of the witches of Oz, Glinda and Elphaba.

Schools can also enjoy reduced rates for Wicked , the ninth longest-running West End musical. Its education programme also provides lesson plans for Key Stage 2 to 5, supporting Drama, English, Art & Design and PSHE subjects.

Plus, the team has developed an anti-bullying lesson, linking to the musical’s story about two witches in training: the popular Glinda and the misunderstood Elphaba. There’s a choice of five different workshops - each for 15+ students and available to book alongside the show, which is running at the Apollo Victoria Theatre until 28th November. See the activities on offer at  www.wickedthemusical.co.uk/london/education/workshops .

4. The Woman in Black

Susan Hill’s ghost story is a chilling experience on stage, entering its 30th year in the West End. School groups of 10 or more are eligible for reduced tickets for certain performances, and official workshops can be arranged to enhance learning - particularly useful if studying the book as a set text.

The play’s latest workshops are aimed at GCSE and A-Level students and led by theatre professionals. Pupils can explore the set and examine the practical aspects of the play, as well as learn how the cast interact with the script. Following the performance, school groups can take part in a Q&A session to gain a deeper understanding of how The Woman in Black  brought to stage. Find out more at www.thewomaninblack.com/education .

Performances are currently running until 26th September, at London’s Fortune Theatre.

Prince of Egypt

Source: © 2019 DWA LLC

The Prince of Egypt is making its stage debut this year at the Dominion Theatre in London. This is an artist’s impression of the stage design.

5. The Prince of Egypt

Here’s one that’s entirely new to the stage - the anticipated adaptation of the 1998 DreamWorks animation, The Prince of Egypt . Featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, the composer behind the original film’s soundtrack, the show arrives at London’s Dominion Theatre on 5th February for an initial run until 12th September.

The musical is said to be relevant for PSHE studies and spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, hoping to encourage discussion about social issues, religious practise and world faiths. Its education team also suggests pairing the theatre experience with a visit to the nearby British Museum, where students can learn more about Ancient Egyptian culture.

Schools are eligible for reduced tickets for selected showings on Mondays, Wednesday and Thursdays – find out more at www.theprinceofegyptmusical.com/groups .

6. Matilda the Musical

Inspired by Road Dahl’s classic story about young genius Matilda Wormwood, the musical is produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company and first appeared in the West End in 2011. It’s gone on to win numerous awards since then, and continues to offer rates for school groups on Tuesday to Thursday performances in its current run until December.

Teachers and students can find a new online resource looking at how Matilda the Musical is staged, as well as a programme of resources intended to help young people develop their writing skills. Plus, you can find interviews with Dennis Kelly and Tim Minchin, the musical’s creators, and teacher notes to use when discussing the show back in the classroom.

An Inspector Calls

Liam Brennan plays Inspector Goole, who is determined to find out what happened to the deceased Eva Smith.

7. An Inspector Calls

Schools around the UK and Ireland can see the classic J B Priestley thriller on stage during its 2020 tour this year. An Inspector Calls has already played to more than four million people over its time in the theatre and continues to be a natural trip choice for classes studying the text as part of the GCSE English curriculum.

Generous discounts are available at each theatre, as is a downloadable teachers pack intended to expand on the experience. The show has already visited Milton Keynes and Bradford, and will continue performances until 23rd May; find the full listings at www.aninspectorcalls.com/tour-dates .

8. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie

Lucky attendees at the School Travel Awards 2019/20 ceremony were treated to a live performance by the cast of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie , which tells the true story of Jamie Campbell, a 16-year-old boy with a big secret.

The themes of identity, relationships and resilience have been highlighted in the show, linking to areas of PSHE study. Designed with these topics in mind, there are resource packs on the website for Year 9 classes and upwards. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is also an official partner of The Diana Award’s Antibullying Programme, raising money to support young people.

There are resources to utilise in other lessons too – for example, post-show discussion activities, and interviews about directing and design have been created for Drama and Musical Theatre classes.

Education rates apply to performances on Monday to Wednesday, with the show accepting bookings at London’s Apollo Theatre until 29th August.

Come From Away

Source: Matthew Murphy

During the 100-minute Come From Away  musical, a cast of 12 play a total of 84 characters.

9. Come From Away

Based on the true story of passenger flights that were grounded in Canada soon after 9/11, the musical is entering its second year on the West End thanks to a successful run.  Come From Away describes itself as ‘greatly relevant’ to PSHE, English, Drama and History subjects. The story focuses on residents of a small town called Gander in Newfoundland, who welcome around 7,000 stranded people into their community in the wake of an unexpected event.

For pre- and post-show learning, teachers can find downloadable packs explaining the show’s background – including the timeline of events that led to the 9/11 attack, and information about Newfoundland’s way of life.

The West End production is recommended for Key Stage 2 upwards, and provides a free teacher ticket for every 10 student tickets booked. School groups can see it at the Phoenix Theatre until May.

10. Mary Poppins

Here’s another Disney story that’s made the list, based on the classic fantasy film from 1964. After an international tour, the show has made its home at London’s Prince Edward Theatre where it will stay until 26th July. Recommended for ages seven and upwards, Mary Poppins retells the tale of a remarkable nanny who begins a job with a London family and improves their whole dynamic.

There’ll be discounts for education bookings on Wednesday and Thursday performances, and themed workshops too. The first is ‘Movement and music’, a Musical Theatre session; and the second is ‘Spotlight on Acting’, where students can study a section of the script, focusing on characterisation, voice and physicality. Both options take place at a rehearsal venue near the theatre, for groups of 20 or more students. You can find out more about at  disney.co.uk/shows/mary-poppins-musical-tickets .

DANCE, DRAMA AND MUSIC

Our arts education partnerships.

We have worked in partnership with Guides of Canada, YMCA Canada, Boys and Girls Club of Canada, Jays Care Foundation, Mirvish Productions and many other organizations to enrich the curriculum and boost self-confidence through dance, drama and music education. We believe that arts education isn’t just about training young people to be professional actors, musicians, dancers or visual artists. It’s about inspiring young people to be expressive, flexible and curious; to see solutions instead of obstacles and to strengthen the ability to adapt and flow with life as it unfolds around us. All of our workshop programs enrich and support the school curriculum. This past year alone, we worked with over 5 million students across Canada.

Our commitment to excellence drives us to deliver curriculum-based dance, drama, mindfulness, and music workshops, enriching the lives of students across Canada. Join us on this artistic journey as we continue to inspire, empower, and transform young minds through the magic of Arts Education.

Arts education, our curriculum based workshops are led by established dance and drama educators.

Our workshops, offered in both French and English, were created to enrich school curriculum, to inspire students to strive for excellence, to increase self-esteem, and to cultivate an appreciation for performing arts education. We can facilitate one-time workshops and full programs for Grades K–12 in classrooms, gyms, libraries, or any other available space at your school either in person or virtually.

Our teaching artists are some of Canada’s top-performing artists and have worked on stages across North America as dancers, singers, actors, directors, choreographers, and producers. All of our teaching artists have a current Vulnerable Sector Screening.

Staff, former students chime in on 'heartbreaking' University Players closure

The university of windsor announced tuesday the theatre company of the drama school will close.

The closure of the University Players, the theatre company arm of the University of Windsor's School for Dramatic Art, isn't a blow just for students — it'll hit the community hard, former students say after the university announced its closure this week.

"I would liken it to the OHL to the NHL, it's like your feeder, your way of getting known, getting out there, working with directors," said Sean Sennett, a 2019 graduate of the Bachelor of Fine Arts program and now professional actor.

"This is a fundamental part of the program that unfortunately the University of Windsor has blindly and quickly gotten rid of. The university is going to get overlooked more and more now for the arts."

Sennett says the University Players was integral in his development as an actor. And without the company, he doesn't know what the landscape is for current and future students as they study at the school.

A man speaks into a web camera looking sad/

"The University Players is really an integral part of the School of Dramatic Art because ... it's where you can experiment, put theory to the test, apply it in front of an audience and in front of paying patrons who are excited to go see quality theatre in the community."

  • UWindsor cuts 10 staff in an effort to slash $5.6M budget shortfall
  • 2 landmark businesses look to move over high rents — just as the city plans to revive downtown

On Tuesday, the University of Windsor announced the closure of the University Players and layoff of 10 staff. The union representing some of the staff, CUPE Local 1393, says six of the affected staff work for the University Players.

The university cited budget considerations, including "fluctuating" enrolment, a domestic tuition freeze provincial policy as reasons for the move, as it looks to slash a $5.6 million shortfall.

The university will also close the Entrepreneurship, Practice, and Innovation Centre (EPI Centre) in its current form, though it will be "reimagined," the university said. CUPE Local 1393 said its two members at the EPI Centre are not being laid off but will see changes to the reporting structure of their job.

  • Town of Essex draws criticism for asking musicians to work unpaid

"Every aspect of all of the different types of drama programs … without the actual theatre production, it's like you're taking out the heart of this community," said Alexandra Filiplic, who graduated in 2016.

She took the Drama in Education and Community program. As part of that program, she took a class that had students work in theatre labs and dramatic criticism. All of that, she says, was done through the University Players.

University says academic programming is priority

In a statement to CBC News, the university said the University Players is a unit that complements academic programs, while the university's priority is academic programming, which is still going ahead through the School of Dramatic Art.

Salaries and costs for the University Players are outpacing revenue by more than $1 million per year, according to the university.

"It is simply not financially viable," a spokesperson said.

"These necessary realignments allow the university to address financial challenges so that we can prioritize spending on our academic programs such as those delivered by faculty members in the School of Dramatic Art. Faculty in the School will continue to pursue vibrant and robust programming that prioritizes experiential learning for current and future students."

travelling theatre companies for schools

Kristen Siapas is one of the staff losing her job in the closure of the University Players and is the president of the Windsor-Essex Theatre Alliance. She says she saw the struggles of the theatre company during the pandemic.

Closure impacts Windsor-Essex theatre community

"It's been tough, but we made it through … and we thought that we had made it through the worst of it. But with the budget cuts coming to the university, obviously, you know, we became an easy target," Siapas said.

"This decision is heartbreaking, not just for us, for the staff, for our students, for their experience, but for the impact to the theatre community as a whole. … It also raises some questions about what this means for the future."

The University Players was set to enter this 66th season in October with a production of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde . They finished what they now know is the players' last production, Little Women , in March.

A woman is interviewed via Zoom.

"We will still be graduating these students, but they won't have that practical knowledge," Siapas said.

Sennett says he's urging the university to reconsider its decision and even explore possible donors or public-private partnerships, alongside other current and former students who have penned statements.

"We're at a point in society where we're so close to forgetting what human beings need and how humanity operates that we are just concerned about money or power ... rather than who the people are that we are affecting," he said.

"In the acting program, in the University Players, you're able to learn humanity and all of the arts is about that, and it's important."

“Tuition-free” is becoming the new buzzword, as several of the world’s top drama schools plan to adopt that policy starting this fall, including the graduate programs at Juilliard and USC.

The 15 top global film schools, l.a. and new york film schools that fly under the radar.

In addition to broadening access to more diverse candidates and wanting to stay competitive with recruitment, the push to go tuition-free at USC was spurred on by the writers and actors strikes. “Just knowing how volatile the industry is for these creatives, it’s extremely important that they not be saddled with tens of thousands of dollars of debt,” says Emily Roxworthy, dean of the USC School of Dramatic Arts.

THR consulted with members of the industry and educators to determine its ranking of the best schools for an acting degree, with factors including overall training, cost, alumni success and more. Tuition, when applicable, is listed on an annualized basis and does not include housing and other fees, unless otherwise indicated.

1. The Juilliard School

New York City

2. Yale University

New Haven, Connecticut

The David Geffen School of Drama, a top grad program, remains extremely popular among students since it went tuition-free in 2021, with many also receiving need-based living stipends of up to $20,000. With the increased influx of applications, and just 16 students accepted per year for the three-year program, the school became even more selective, says dean James Bundy. “There’s terrific talent coming into the pool,” he says. Ninety-three percent of students who are accepted enroll at the school, pointing to its demand, according to Bundy. Faculty include Ron Van Lieu — who got a shout-out from former student Da’Vine Joy Randolph when she accepted her Academy Award in March — and Christopher Bayes, a leader in clown work and commedia. In addition to training Meryl Streep, Angela Bassett, Brian Tyree Henry and more, the program was also home to Randolph’s Holdovers co-star Paul Giamatti, as well as Juliana Canfield and Tom Pecinka, both lauded this year for their roles in Stereophonic .

3. University of North Carolina School of the Arts

Winston-Salem, North Carolina

4. Carnegie Mellon

In the school’s strong undergraduate program, both acting and music theater students take the same core curriculum before moving into more specialized training, including classes on the business side of the profession, with the goal of preparing students for work in film, television, theater and more. Its illustrious alumni include Judith Light, Zachary Quinto and Matt Bomer, and several who have seen success on Broadway in the past year, with acting Tony recognition for Leslie Odom Jr. ( Purlie Victorious ) and Sarah Pidgeon and Will Brill (both in Stereophonic ). Tuition for the undergraduate program is just under $65,000.

5. Royal Academy of Dramatic Art

6. london academy of music and dramatic art.

While it’s the oldest drama school in the British Isles, founded in 1861, LAMDA has continued innovating. It hired Philippa Strandberg-Long, a leading teacher of the Meisner Technique, as its director of actor training and drama school, and is offering virtual production technology acting and technical training to students in new, fully equipped studios. On the school’s long list of storied alumni are Brian Cox, David Oyelowo and Benedict Cumberbatch, who leads the school’s board of trustees, with recent alum Amber Grappy, who graduated in 2022, appearing on the Netflix series One Day . Tuition for international students in the three-year undergraduate acting program is just under $30,000, with the cost of the two-year grad acting program close to $31,000.

7. New York University

8. guildhall.

Guildhall has educated actors including Daniel Craig, Ewan McGregor, Michaela Coel and Lily James in its three-year undergraduate conservatory acting program, which accepts 28 students a year. The school places an emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration with students in the music and production arts programs, with support to create their own performance projects, and will introduce a B.A. degree in performance design starting in September 2025. The school recently saw the departure of Patsy Rodenburg, a longtime faculty member specializing in text, poetry and voice, and its new hires include noted opera singer Sarah Tynan as head of vocal arts. Tuition for international students is about $31,000.

9. UC San Diego

10. the old globe and usd.

Led by actor, director and choreographer Jesse Perez, the two-year MFA program has a focus on Shakespeare and a partnership with the professional Old Globe Theatre. Seven students a year are accepted to the program, which is tuition-free and includes a monthly stipend. Perez continues to work to broaden the school’s traditional classical training with a focus on diversity and courses on Suzuki training, clowning, physical comedy and more. “It’s my sixth year as the director of the program, and I’m finally starting to see the changes stick,” Perez says. Nathan Crocker, who previously worked at Rutgers University and NYU, was recently hired as the new head of voice and speech and will start in fall 2024.

Los Angeles

New hires within UCLA’s Department of Theater include Michelle Liu Carriger as theater chair and Judith Moreland ( Bosch ) as head of acting. The school’s graduate acting program was on pause last year and will be paused for the upcoming academic year (though graduate directing, playwriting and design programs are ongoing), as faculty continues to review and update the curriculum. The BFA program remains in operation, with recent alumni including Fernando Carsa ( Acapulco ) and Ava Lalezarzadeh ( Before ). In-state costs, which include housing and food, are $42,127 for undergrads living on campus and a bit more than $76,000 for out-of-state residents.

12. University of Southern California

USC’s School of Dramatic Arts has a new home base, with the recently opened Dramatic Arts Building, and big news: Its MFA program will be tuition-free starting in the fall. The school, which also offers a BFA program, benefits from both proximity and a connection to Hollywood, with the majority of faculty continuing to work in the industry, including Alexandra Billings ( Transparent ), Bayo Akinfemi ( Bob Hearts Abishola ) and Finola Hughes ( Blossom ), and many celebrity guest speakers, with Broadway actor MaryAnn Hu newly hired as director of the school’s musical theater program. Tuition for the undergraduate program is $69,904.

13. National Institute of Dramatic Art

Kensington, Australia

The drama conservatory has produced such stellar alumni as Cate Blanchett, Baz Luhrmann and Sarah Snook. The three-year undergraduate drama conservatory has been led by John Bashford, former associate principal at LAMDA, since 2016. The school recently hired alum Travis Cardona as head of First Nations (referring to Indigenous Australians), and has worked with him to implement First Nations storytelling and practices within the curriculum. The annual tuition for the BFA is about $23,000 for international students.

14. University of Michigan

Ann Arbor, Michigan

15. Brown/Trinity Rep

Providence, Rhode Island

Long seen by the industry as one of the premier drama schools, the Ivy League program typically accepts 12 students a year into its tuition-free drama grad program, which is affiliated with the professional Trinity Repertory Company theater. The program is now on pause, with neither the MFA acting nor the directing program accepting a 2024-25 class. (The program currently has second- and third-year classes.) Faculty are considering possibilities for the future, as well as pathways for revising the programs in “bold ways” that speak to the changing theater landscape and the arts infrastructure at Brown. “At this point, we are continuing to explore the possibilities for the future of the programs, and any decisions will come as the result of this robust, ongoing process,” says Curt Columbus, Brown/ Trinity Rep’s artistic director.

16. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill, North Carolina

17. Columbia University

The school’s MFA acting degree is led by casting director James Calleri and actor Peter Jay Fernandez ( The Irishman ), and has the benefit of being located in New York, giving students proximity to the industry, while working entertainment players serve as adjunct faculty and guest lecturers. In the past year, Scott Whitehurst, formerly co-head of acting at The New School, joined Columbia as a full-time faculty member. Tuition is about $71,000 for the first two years, with most students receiving large scholarships to defray costs, and close to $6,000 for the third.

18. Savannah College of Art and Design

Savannah, Georgia

SCAD has an on-site casting office, under the guidance of Mikie Heilbrun, formerly a head of casting for The CW/UPN, and a second, recently opened office in Atlanta, overseen by Alpha Tyler, former head of casting for Tyler Perry Studios. The offices connect students to film and television projects across the country including May December , Origin , The Color Purple and Fear the Walking Dead . The school, which also features an 11-acre backlot in Savannah, now offers a BFA degree in Atlanta, under the guidance of film and television veteran Craig Anton. Tuition for the upcoming academic year is $41,130.

7 Must-See Attractions in Perm

Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre

When you hear “Perm”, you probably think of an embarrassing hairstyle from the 80s. It might come as a surprise then that Perm is also the last city on the European side of the Ural mountains, and a place very much worth visiting. When you find yourself there, here are the attractions you absolutely cannot miss.

1. permyak salty ears.

This is the main symbolic landmark of the city. It is a sculpture consisting of an oval frame with big ears and a figure of a photographer taking a picture of it. The region is rich in minerals and in the past it was a very important salt mining location. The workers of salt mines would carry big bags full of salt on their backs. The salt would spill on their ears, making them big and red. Salt mining became so interwoven with the identity of the region that all of its inhabitants started being called Permyak’s Salty Ears. Now everyone can become one in one of the central squares of the city.

One of the culture ministers of Permsky Krai once called it a cultural capital of the universe. While it might be a little bit too exaggerated of a statement, Perm is indeed a place of unexpected cultural gems. PERMM Museum of Contemporary art is one of them. It holds temporary exhibitions and also hosts festivals, lectures, workshops and performances. It is the only contemporary art gallery of this kind outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Perm-36 was one of the better-known forced labour camps in Russia. Political prisoners were kept here until the 1980s. It is also the only GULAG in Russia that was turned into a museum. The museum was founded by Memorial, an NGO devoted to helping the victims of Soviet political repressions. Since its establishment, the museum has constantly been at odds with the local authorities, who are perpetuating the pro-government version of history. The museum was closed in 2015 but has reopened now, with a slightly more apologetic administration in place. It is still a place very much worth visiting, another must-see to put on your list.

Things To Do

Theater | playhouse square time-traveling with ‘back to the future: the musical’, assistant company manager, whose story goes from russia to cleveland, talks stage adaptation of beloved 1985 movie.

Casey Likes, as Marty McFly, and Roger Bart, as Doc Brown, perform in the Broadway production of “Back to the Future: The Musical.” A tour of the show launches this month in Cleveland. (Matthew Murphy and Evan Zimmerman)

No, to enjoy the 1.21 gigawatts of entertainment that is “Back to the Future: The Musical” — based, of course, on the beloved 1985 movie starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd — we’ll need the larger, grander KeyBank State Theater at Playhouse Square in Cleveland, where the show is about to launch a nearly monthlong run consisting of 32 performances .

The stint also will serve as the tour’s official launch — following initial rehearsals in New York City and subsequent tech rehearsals and previews in Schenectady, New York — as well as a homecoming for its assistant company manager, Alena Efremova.

“I’m originally from Russia,” says Efremova, still in a rehearsal space looking over 42nd Street in the Big Apple at the time of this phone interview. “I grew up in Russia, (went to) high school and everything in Russia. But I visited the United States when I was, like, 11/12/13 and fell in love with the country.”

When she was still in high school, she says, she would make summertime visits to Cleveland, where her sister lived, having a great time taking part in summer camps and the like. So when she had the chance to move here after graduation, she took it and attended Cleveland State University.

Along the way to that point, a Broadway performance of “Aida” had blown her mind, and she believes she remembers taking in a theater piece at Cain Park in Cleveland Heights.

Perhaps more important, though, was a backstage tour at Playhouse Square, which opened her eyes to the fact the theater workforce was more than actors and directors.

“It was at one of those tours that I found out that the theater had, like, stage managers, lighting designers, sound designers, company managers, and that’s when I started (thinking) ‘OK, that’s maybe something I can do,’” she says. “And that’s how I ended up at Cleveland State and their theater program.”

Her parents and sister still live in Northeast Ohio, as does Efremova — who resides in Lyndhurst when she’s not off with a show.

Her credits include work with the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Des Moines Metro Opera and Theatre Aspen, and she served in a similar role to the one she has with “Back to the Future” with the national tour of the Aaron Sorkin-adapted revival of “To Kill a Mockingbird” after starting as the production’s COVID-19 safety manager. The latter had a stint at Playhouse Square in 2022.

“It was so surreal being back home and … seeing the stage from different points of view,” she says. “You don’t realize how small the stage at the (Connor Palace) is, and backstage (it takes) really cool choreography to figure out, “Where are we gonna put props? ‘Where are we gonna put the wig table?’ — everything like that.”

She got the “Back to the Future” gig, she says, because she’d previously worked with the company manager, Jack Stevens — who, she says, like at least one member of the company, is from Northeast Ohio.

“I was like, ‘Is (having a Cleveland-area connection) one of the prerequisites for the job?’” she jokes.

Her responsibilities run the gamut from travel-related arrangements to planning an opening-night party and selecting the opening-night gift the company receives — in other words, she says, things “they don’t have to worry about once they’re on stage. They have to worry about what’s happening ON stage.”

Talk to other folks who’ve had her job and you hear they’re the folks who others vent to and with whom they share secrets. You might say that person is the production’s amateur psychologist.

“I feel like I’m becoming one,” Efremova says. “Definitely, it is one of the jobs. It’s not in your job description, but it kind of ends up one of your jobs.”

Playhouse Square announces ‘A Beautiful Noise,’ ‘Life of Pi,’ ‘Kimberly Akimbo’ on the way

With this Cleveland stint, she’ll also be a person others come to for dining and entertainment recommendations to help fill up what free time company members have. She mentions the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and maybe a visit to Cedar Point in Sandusky on an off day.

“(When) people ask what to do in Cleveland, (I say), ‘Well, if you want to save money go to the (Cleveland Museum of Art), because it’s the greatest museum and it’s free,’” she says.

Alena Efremova is the assistant company manager for the Playhouse Square-bound tour of

As for the show itself, “Back to the Future: The Musical” is lead-produced by Colin Ingram, with the movie’s creators, writer-director Robert Zemeckis and co-writer Bob Gale, also serving as producers, according to a news release from Playhouse Square. Both wrote the book for the show, which features songs from the movie — “The Power of Love” and “Johnny B. Goode” among them — and additional pieces by Grammy Award winners Alan Silvestri, who scored the movie, and Glen Ballard.

It is directed by Tony Award winner John Rando (“Urinetown: The Musical”).

“Back to the Future: The Musical” officially opened in London’s West End in September 2021, according to a Playhouse Square news release, and won the Best New Musical Olivier Award, with a Broadway production following about 10 months ago.

The Cleveland run is part of the 2023-24 KeyBank Broadway Series at Playhouse Square .

Based on the review snippets the news release includes, Cleveland audiences are in for a crowd-pleasing spectacle as the story of Marty McFly, Emmett “Doc” Brown and their time-traveling DeLorean is translated for another medium.

“I can say that everything that you love about the movie is going to be on stage,” Efremova says. “It’s such a cool adaptation.

“And I have no idea how half of the things are happening on stage, but they look so cool. And I’m just so excited for my friends to see it. Audiences all over the country are going to be blown away.”

“The Outsiders” became the essence of a Broadway insider on Sunday as the gritty adaptation of the classic American young adult novel won the Tony Award for best new musical. Sunday night also saw theater history made for women as Broadway directors and score writers. Danya Taymor won a directing award for “The Outsiders.” Then Shaina Taub won for best score, for “Suffs.” “Stereophonic” took home best play, and “Appropriate” best play revival. The musical of “Merrily We Roll Along” also won big, nabbing the revival award as well as trophies for Daniel Radcliffe and Jonathan Groff. The night included surprise appearances from Jay-Z and Hillary Clinton.

Theater | ‘The Outsiders’ wins best musical and ‘Stereophonic’ best play as women make strides at Tony Awards

When it comes to what is arguably the biggest prize of all, the Tony Award for best new musical, it’s a guessing game. Why? None of this past season’s fresh-faced tuners really stands out from the others.
