Singapore Airlines Bassinet Size

Request an airplane bassinet at the time you book your infant plane ticket. There’s only a few bassinets on board, so don’t miss out.

It’s first come, first served.

The benefit of booking a bassinet on plane is that you will sit in the bulkhead, so you’ll have more room for  your legs to stretch out.

The downside is that your tray table folds out from inside the armrest, and that can be a big pain!

The TV screen folds out from under your seat too, as it can’t be fixed to the wall in front.

The Singapore Airlines baby bassinet size is 768mm (L) x 298mm (W) x 158mm (H).

The toddler bassinet weight limit is a baby or toddler up to 14kg in weight.

Singapore Airlines Infant Baggage

If you are flying with a baby or a toddler, you can take  one piece of checked baggage for the infant, up to 10kg in weight.

Child fares are entitled to the normal baggage allowances. (30kg for economy)

You can also take one each of these WITHOUT CHARGE.

1. A fully collapsible stroller or pushchair  (we own this Britax travel stroller )

2. Carry-cot or car seat

UPDATE: SIA only allows free check in for car seat and stroller for INFANTS Only (0-23 months). If you are checking in a car seat for a toddler, there will be an extra charge.

Yes, you can take a compact foldable light-weight stroller (like the light & fabulous Pockit stroller pictured above) onboard.

The travel stroller must meet:

  • Singapore standard cabin bag dimensions (up to 7kg and sum of length, width and height should not exceed 115cm), AND

NB: If it’s a full flight, with limited cabin bag space, the stroller may still be put underneath the plane.

It must be folded and put in it’s bag BEFORE you board.

Obviously, you can’t use it INSIDE the plane during the flight.

If you take it onboard, the stroller counts as 1 piece of cabin baggage.

Bigger strollers need to be checked in, but they go free!

Flying Singapore Airlines with 3 kids under 5

Singapore Airlines Review on Our Globetrotters

Could this really be the world’s best airline flying with kids?

We welcome to the blog today, mum of three Karen to share her experience flying long-haul with premier Asian carrier Singapore Airlines with 3 children.

We’ve flown with Singapore Airlines a number of times – once from Singapore to London Heathrow when I was newly pregnant with twins but didn’t know it yet (that was fun as I spent the whole journey feeling desperately sick!), and again when we moved from the UK to Australia – flying from Heathrow to Brisbane via Singapore . This time was a one way journey with four-year-old twins and a just-turned two-year-old.

This post is part of our Flying with Kids series. You can read all our family airline reviews here .

How we chose our flights with singapore airlines.

We chose the flight on our first trip because it was the return leg of a round-the-world ticket that included certain airlines and Singapore was a good destination for us to hop to other destinations from so it was purely for convenience.

More recently, when we emigrated, we chose the flights based primarily on price as we were spending a lot of money moving abroad and didn’t want to waste unnecessary money on the flight to start our new lives.

Convenience also played a part as we wanted to fly right through without too long a wait in between flights and we liked the idea of arriving in the evening to minimise jet lag .

We researched prices on price comparison sites and also directly on the airline’s own website. We found Singapore Airline’s own website was user-friendly and the price was often slightly cheaper. We ended up booking the flights with Flight Centre though as they matched the price and gave us a small extra discount.

Thought about using Singapore’s budget airline Scoot? Read here for a comparison long-haul, low-cost experience.

Boarding a Singapore Airlines flight

Luggage allowance on Singapore Airlines

On our most recent flight, as we were activating permanent residency visas, we were eligible for an increased luggage allowance (40kg) each. Our daughter turned two in the month we were moving, but we decided to book her a seat of her own rather than travel with her on our lap while she was under two.

We figured it was such a long journey so it was worth the extra cost. (This proved wise as she struggled to settle on the flights and it would have been so difficult with her on one of our laps for 23 hours).

Bring your credit card to the airport.

A few days before our flight, we received an email advising us that we needed to bring the credit card we’d purchased the flight on with us to the airport. It gave us a panic as we’d cut the card up and closed the account already.

I rang the airline and they said it was OK to bring the statement with us which showed the payment, so we did that. I’d never been asked this before for flights or holidays but it’s worth bearing in mind. We weren’t asked to show the card or statement at check-in, but at least we had it with us in case.

Travelling with a buggy (stroller) on Singapore Airlines

When we booked the flights, we were told by Flight Centre that as our daughter was two and had her own seat we weren’t able to take our buggy with us to the gate and we’d have to check it in as hold luggage. We later found out this was incorrect as there were lots of other families on board with kids aged 2 – 4 who had brought their buggy to the gate.

It was annoying not being able to take it to the gate, as chasing three young kids around an airport isn’t fun! As we needed to take the buggy to Australia, we cleaned it thoroughly (Australia’s rules are strict when it comes to dirty wheels) and wrapped it in bubble wrap and bin liners and packed it as hold luggage and included it within our 40kg pp luggage allowance. It travelled well without any issues.

Heathrow services

As we had such a large luggage allowance and our shipping container wasn’t going to arrive in Australia for another six weeks, we took a lot of bags with us to make the most of the generous luggage allowance. In total, we ended up with 13 pieces of luggage including two rucksacks to use as cabin luggage , three Trunkis to use as the kids’ hand luggage, lots of suitcases and the buggy. (You can learn more about travelling with kids ride-on suitcases here ).

When the taxi dropped us off, we quickly realised we couldn’t fit it all onto the luggage trolleys and manage the kids on our own. Luckily, Heathrow has a porter service so we rang the phone, based at the taxi drop off point and a minute later two guys came out and loaded everything for us onto trolleys. This honestly was the biggest relief ever and it was worth every penny. They walked our luggage right to the check-in desk making the whole process easy.

Checking in for singapore airlines at heathrow.

The check-in queue was empty when we arrived, so we went right to the front. Although your visa is loaded onto your passport electronically, the check-in staff wanted to see in writing that we had visas as they wanted proof we were allowed the extra luggage allowance.

Luckily, I had printouts of our visa letter in my hand luggage. We had to wait for an agonising few minutes while they debated about whether we were due the extra luggage allowance that both Flight Centre and Singapore Air had previously confirmed to me over the phone.

This was stressful with three little ones running around, especially given we were already feeling quite emotional and stressed out about moving. We started to panic about what would happen if they told us we couldn’t bring it all as we had so much stuff! It was all good in the end and they eventually let us through.

Seating on board Singapore Airlines

On the A380 between London and Singapore, there are three seats by the windows and four in the centre in economy. So for the first leg of our migration journey, we booked the three by the window and two in the middle with the aisle in between us.

On the smaller 777 which took us from Singapore to Brisbane, there were two seats in the window rows and four in the centre. We took up the two window seats with the rest of us sitting across the aisle in the middle. We were happy that we were able to all sit grouped together and having the aisle in between us meant we could swap seats to keep the kids entertained if anyone got bored.

Not sure how seating works on your aircraft? Check our SeatGuru to see how you can be seated

Meals on board singapore airlines.

When the meals came out we saw all of the other families were getting kids’ meals. We asked and were told this should have been pre-booked when we booked our tickets but Flight Centre hadn’t mentioned this to us.

It meant our kids had to have adult meals on the first flight as they didn’t have any extra kids’ meals on board. A member of staff was kind enough to call to the next flight to pre-order kids’ meals for our connecting flight though.

On the second flight, the kids got chicken nuggets which made them much happier. The kids didn’t really want to eat on either flight and just picked at things so I was glad that I’d bought some snacks at Heathrow to nibble on. Ditto, I was pleased that I bought a few bottles of water because although they come around with drinks trolleys regularly, it’s handy to have drinks ready when the kids needed them.

Entertainment on board Singapore Airlines

Travelling long-haul with kids is always a bit unnerving but despite our fears, our twin boys travelled like pros. They sat watching endless movies without any problems and they worked through the puzzle books we’d brought them and played Where’s Wally happily for hours.

Our daughter was a bit too young for any of it though and she really struggled on the flights, despite the sticker books, toys and colouring we brought for her. She felt travel sick on the first flight and was very grumpy and by the time we got onto the second flight she was very unhappy, frustrated and overtired as she couldn’t sleep.

The staff on board were great, trying to cheer her up, bringing bribes of ice cream and chocolate and whatever they could do to help calm her down. They also didn’t mind us pacing up and down the aircraft.

Singapore changi airport.

We didn’t have long enough at the airport to explore but from our previous visit, we knew Changi was a huge airport with lots of fun options including a swimming pool on the roof and a tropical butterfly garden plus a number of rest opportunities including hotels, rest areas and sleeping booths.

You can see a great review on everything to do staying in Changi Airport here .

For flights with more time to spare, there is even a free Singapore tour that you can book flying Singapore Airlines! If I was going to have a wait at Changi, I’d visit the Changi website in advance to plan what I was going to do so I could organise my hand luggage to suit.

Fly straight through or stopover in Singapore?

We choose to travel straight through for our migration because we wanted to get to Australia faster. Singapore sounds like a fantastic stopover destination though, so for future trips, we would love to stay there to explore and break up the journey.

Arriving in brisbane.

Brisbane is a small airport but we found it challenging to get around with all of our luggage and three little, overtired kids and no buggy as this time we couldn’t ring porters up for help!

In the end, a member of the immigration team came over to help us get out with our trolleys. We found the staff to be so welcoming and helpful. I’m not sure we’d have ever made it out without someone taking one of the trolleys for us!

Singapore Airlines A380 taking off

Would we recommend Singapore Airlines?

We would happily fly with Singapore Airlines again. Changi is a fantastic airport and the only real negatives about our experience came from booking with a third-party provider and getting the wrong information about the buggy and food.

So you want to fly your baby in First Class...

Starting a family is a big commitment. Out pops a screaming mini-me and overnight, everything changes – bank account balances lose a few zeros, hours of sleep disappear, conversation topics vary between choice of diapers, milk powder and enrichment classes, and playgrounds and parks quickly become the entertainment on weekends.

Aaron never fails to remind me that I’m the least productive (or most productive , depending on how you look at it) guestwriter on this site but trust me, it is hard to write with children screaming around you. It goes without saying that priorities and plans for travel take a big hit as well.

When I first started out on this hobby, my wife and I had just gotten married and we had grand plans for all the things we’d do with miles and points – we had a list of all the First Class products we wanted to try, places we wanted to go and hotels we would stay in. I promised her then I’d get us there. Well, boys will be boys; I haven’t managed to keep the  whole promise yet, but I did get her pregnant instead. Twice.

Since then, we’ve had to modulate a lot of our expectations. Instead of dreaming about the next time we’d be sleeping flat at 40,000 feet, we dream about the next time we’d be sleeping at all. That being said, I am a firm believer in the developmental and educational benefits that travel brings to child and adult alike, and my wife and I have had some amazing holidays in the past 3 to 4 years with our children. Without a doubt, we intend to keep maximizing miles and points for experiences we can enjoy and cherish as a family.

singapore airlines family travel

How, though? For those of you just starting out, accumulating the miles for that trip to Europe already seems a daunting task. That’s not even broaching the topic of finding award space. Finding long haul Business Saver for 2 passengers can already be difficult, what more for a family of 3, or more? First/Suite Saver awards are worse, and it is near impossible to find more than 2 on a flight.

Another reason (or excuse) for the procrastination on this post is because I know I’m not even close to having all the answers to ‘Award Travel for the Family’. Nevertheless, I aim to cover some of the basic information on the topic for the beginners among us, share a little of what I’ve done for my family thus far, and list some strategies I’m intending to employ for family travel in the near future. Hopefully, this article will serve as a platform for discussion and sharing among those similarly blessed (or afflicted, depending on the current behaviour of your child) in the Milelion community.

Flying with Infants on Singapore Airlines

In line with most other airlines, SQ has set the definition for infants at 0-23 months, 2-11 years for children, and >12 years for adults. Obviously, the travel and ticketing rules differ for each age bracket. In this post, we will only be covering travel with  infants (0-23 months).  Look out for future posts that deal with the other category!

singapore airlines family travel

First things first – no infant below the age of 7 days is allowed to fly. I will presume there is no need for me to elaborate why.

Infant passengers are issued what is termed an ‘Infant-in-Lap’ or ‘Lap Infant’ ticket. This ticket  has to be tagged to a booking reference number of an adult (>18 years old) traveling on the same flight. An  adult can only have one infant tagged to him/her. For travel on SQ, the rules for the ‘Infant-in-Lap’ ticket are the same, regardless of whether the adult is traveling on an award or revenue ticket.

Singapore Airlines charges a flat rate of 10% of the current best available revenue ticket price (some report being charged 10% of full fare, YMMV) on the route, plus some taxes.

singapore airlines family travel

Note that the adult fare consists of the ticket price (S$8,250) plus the various taxes. The infant ticket is priced at 10% of S$8,250, sans the taxes. However, certain taxes imposed by some airports  will be charged to the infant as well. I know that LHR is definitely one of them.

Doing this when you’re purchasing a revenue ticket is simple enough; all you have to do is to input the number of adults and infants accordingly into the search engine, and the system will automatically generate the final fare for all the passengers. However, this get slightly more complicated when making an award booking.

If you are making your award redemption on the SQ website, you will  not be able to buy an infant ticket at the same sitting online. You will notice that the drop down box under ‘Infant’ will be greyed out. Simply make your redemption booking as usual. Once you’re done and have a confirmed ticket, call up SQ KrisFlyer services, provide your booking reference number, and explain that you would like to add on an Infant-in-Lap ticket to your booking. The CSO will walk you through the process.

It is good habit to check how much you should be expecting to pay for the Infant-in-Lap ticket before even making your award redemption. You can do so by making a dummy booking for a return ticket to your planned destination for 1 Adult and 1 Infant, and looking at the cost breakdown. Make sure the price the CSO quotes is not too far off from what you’ve gotten on the website. Personally, there have been several times where the CSO came back to me with a ridiculously high fare which was erroneously calculated.

Another reason you should do this because while it is ‘only 10%’, when flying Business, First, or on a complicated routing involving multiple stopovers or one-way legs, the revenue fare can be quite high and 10% can get to be quite steep. After all, all you’re paying for is the right to hold your baby in your arms!

Taking the above example again, a SIN MEL return ticket in Suites for your little prince / princess will set you back S$825. Now this is certainly not cheap, albeit being on Suites class. If this is an issue for you, fares in Business class will be significantly easier to stomach. Retail Business Class tickets go for about $3-4k to Australia and $6k to Europe, you’re looking at forking out about S$300-600 for the infant ticket.

singapore airlines family travel

Once that is done, you will be issued a separate e-Ticket for your infant, which should look something like this. As you can see, your infant is also entitled his/her own baggage allowance. For SQ, this is usually only 10kg, but if you’re travelling in/out from the United States, the baggage allowance is even more generous and goes up to 23kg (for economy/premium economy) and 32kg (for business and first).

Tips and Caveats

Now that we’ve gotten the boring, admin part out of the way, here are some tips and things to watch out for when flying with an infant on SQ.

Guaranteed Bulkhead / Double Bed

One of the great benefits of flying with an infant is that it essentially guarantees you the coveted bulkhead seat (in business class) or double bed (in suites).

singapore airlines family travel

As the more observant of you would have realized, the bassinet seats (denoted by the little bassinet above) are almost always blocked from selection. These seats are routinely put on hold for all flights to cater for passengers flying with infants. While it could be possible that all those seats are actually occupied with an adult+infant, it is far more likely that at least some of them are still empty.

If you recall Aaron’s detailed tutorial on the various SQ Business Class seats , a key point is that the bulkhead seats offer way more leg room than the standard ones.

singapore airlines family travel

The non-bassinet bulkhead seats available for selection are usually the first to go, so unless you’re reserving your tickets right at the opening of the booking window, chances are they’d already be gone. No such issue if you have an infant in tow – after you’ve bought the infant ticket with the Ticketing Call Center, just ask them to assist in assigning you a bassinet seat, and there you have it.

It is a similar situation on (the old) Suites Class. If you’re travelling with a partner, it is obvious far more preferable to obtain one of the 2 double beds (2C/D and 3C/D). As 2C/D are bassinet seats, 3C/D is the only double bed available for selection for regular bookings, and it tends to be snapped up quickly as well. Flying with an infant almost guarantees you the double bed in 2C/D if you call to get the relevant seats assigned.

While the bassinet seats are usually available (especially on Business / First), you should never assume so – reserve them as soon as you can!

Reduce Carry-on Load by using on-board Baby Amenities

SQ also carries  a whole bunch of baby amenities on board, including diapers, infant food (those glass bottle kind), baby wipes, disposable bibs and feeding bottles, and these are available on request. If you’re not picky when it comes to these things, this service is helpful as it saves you from boarding the plane looking like you’re carrying an FBO*.

*FBO – Full Battle Order

In fact, you can call up to choose between infant food, a baby meal, or a child meal for your infant. Not exactly Book the Cook, but hey, more of that Lobster Thermidor for yourself! Your kid gets stuck eating something healthy and wholesome and salt-less like this. Yum.

singapore airlines family travel

Lounge Access

Lounge access (especially in airports other than SIN) is a godsend – at the very least you get a quiet place to change diapers. At Changi the SilverKris lounge has decent food and adequate baby changing / nursing facilities.

However, when outstation, do take note of the check-in counter and lounge opening times. Being used to the 24/7 hustle and bustle at Changi, one may take that for-granted. I made that mistake once and was stranded with an over-tired baby and irritated wife waiting for check-in to open – I will not make that amateur mistake again!

Do not pay 2 x One Way Infant-in-Lap Tickets

You may come across this scenario if you have booked your award flights as 2 separate One Way tickets, and/or you are flying on separate tickets because you’re in the middle of a pendulum using the US$100 Stopover Trick . As everyone knows, buying a one way ticket is almost always more expensive than return.

While this concern does not apply on award flight redemptions on SQ as the miles listed refer to a one way redemption anyway, the Infant-in-Lap tickets are a percentage of the revenue fare, thus it will also be priced higher accordingly. When making an award redemption, I generally prefer to book it as 2 separate one way tickets rather than a single return ticket as it offers me more flexibility especially if one leg is on waitlist. Also, whenever you can, you should be taking advantage of the stopover trick, so that’s where the importance of this point comes in.

For example, on my recent family holiday to Perth, I am flying on the middle bit of 2 separate tickets, MNL-SIN-PER and PER-SIN-TPE. However, I’m only bringing my infant on the SIN-PER-SIN return legs. Some CSOs will price this infant ticket as 2 x One Way tickets; SIN-PER and PER-SIN, and this will obviously be more expensive (I was quoted S$590). However, it is possible for the CSO to issue a SIN-PER-SIN return ticket to your infant first, then tag it to both booking references. This can easily save you a few hundred bucks (paid S$308 as in the above screenshot). If the CSO you’re with refuses to do this, thank him/her, put down and call again.

Again, this also emphasizes the need to run a dummy booking on the intended route of travel to check the price of the Infant-in-Lap ticket – do not pay more than you should!

No Frequent Flyer Status for your Infant

No, unfortunately you won’t be able to give you kid a head start in the miles and points game – while infant tickets are considered revenue tickets, infants under the age of 2 cannot register for a Krisflyer account, and thus will not be able to earn miles.

TLDR? Pay 10% of adult revenue fares to give your infant a glimpse of the high life.

Any tips for flying with kids age 2 and above?

How i wish i could contribute! Having a 1yo 🙂

Not all SQ flights carry baby food and amenities so beware! I was on a SIN-ICN flight couple months ago on business class and had assumed food was taken care off. Only to waltz up and find out they didn’t even have the bottled food for my toddler!

Enough said, that left me with a hungry toddler and a pissed off wife who swore off taking regional SQ biz

You can choose meal for your toddler. Did you select no meal?

Brian

I simply didn’t select the meal! So I thought they would have defaulted to some form of baby food.

Thank god some kind mummy gave us a pack of her kids food as I took her around the plane for a walk

Keep the family posts coming! Mile chasing with a family in tow is a totally different ball game.

Here’s a couple of tips from me.. who 15 years ago, started flying with an infant (then)…. and in the past 15 years, still cannot understand why parents of (especially) very young children, do not bothers to even take any time at in simply googling for info and tips of traveling with younglings… 1. The world doesn’t owe you anything.. fail to prepare and you’ve prepared to fail.. don’t go blaming anyone else (airlines, crew, hotels, restaurants etc) cos it’s YOUR mini-me and if anything goes sideways, don’t blame anyone (or everyone) else besides yourselves.. 2. Altitude-related ear-popping can be …  Read more »

Lol. You have a serious problem bro

DK1

Well said Ken. Some people just think they have a god given right to do anything anywhere. I hardly know any parents who are aware of the ear-popping problem. They just think its normal for kids to cry and the rest of the world should go on with their work as normal.

Thanks, DK1.. maybe.. just maybe.. same sorts as those who think I’ve got ‘a big problem’.. pure speculation here, but that really doesn’t bother me..

My wife and I took our children (3 year old and 1 year old) to HK on SQ biz class on A380, we took a morning flight. What we did to prepare our children was bringing them to Changi Airport to watch planes take off and also show them videos about HK. We checked in 3h before the actual flight time, had a good breakfast in SilverKris Lounge, filled up all hot water for milk in thermal bottles and standby. As soon as we got on board, the SQ stewardess gave our kids plushies and coloring materials. As it’s our …  Read more »

Great post! I had actually wanted to ask Aaron to help out with this. I’m currently on SIN-TOK-BKK holiday using Alaska mileage on JAL biz and trying to include my infant boy in the ticket was quite an experience. Was being bounced around by Alaska and JAL CSO before I finally got my baby boy ticketed. Seats wise be sure to check with the airline CSO which seats are bassinet seats as seat plan on JAL is quite confusing. All-in-all it was worth the effort as the seats are comfortable and you can turn to bed mode and both you …  Read more »

I am planning the second article on infant seats on other carriers, but personally have only done it on Lifemiles / TG. So if you are willing to it would be great if you could share your experience with ticketing with Alaska / JAL!

Andy

Care to share how you managed to get the infant tickets ticketed and at what costs? Few months back I wanted to purchase a TPE-TYO-SIN but was getting bounced around by different CSOs, and a dummy booking on JAL showed that the infant tickets costs (if I rmb correctly) ~S$800 so I decided it was cheaper to simply purchase more Alaska miles to get my baby his own seat instead. Full lie flat for him instead of being squashed inside the bassinet.

Julia

Thank you so much for this! Me and husband will be traveling from NYC to Jakarta, Indonesia in December with our infant baby, and we’re hoping to book SQ award double suite. Your article is really helpful, thank you!!!!!

Any idea on whether it is possible to purchase an infant-in-lap ticket when redeeming for Star Alliance flights using Krisflyer miles?

W L

Hi Aaron Quick question: I am trying to register my daughter as a KF member, but she is not 2 years old yet. However, we have purchased a child ticket (I.e. she will have her own seat) for her, so we are obviously paying the same for her as we are for her older sister, who is >2 years old and already a KF member. It would stand to reason that we should be entitled to our younger daughter’s miles, too, given that the ticket we bought should allow for mileage earning, no? Any tips on how we can get …  Read more »

KrisFlyer allows you to make a retro claim for miles for flights 6 months before enrollment. from T&C:

Retroactive mileage claims that are made prior to enrolment in KrisFlyer are only valid for Singapore Airlines flights. The flights must have taken place no longer than 6 months prior to enrolment.

Hi Aaron… i have an upcoming reservation on SQ on revenue fare ( Biz Lite) which i have booked few months back @ 2100 USD.. Due to a change in plans, I am looking to travel with my infant now and when i reached out to SQ to dd infant to my reservation, they are quoting close to 1000 USD probably based on the current fare… I always thought it was a fixed fare or a pct of the fare I paid…. but the quoted number from SQ is too much ..

Any tips on how to go abt this?

neha

just to add, in case your redemption is booked via Kris flyer but for a star alliance flight, they will make your life miserable if you want to attach your infant. I have been going back and forth with Air India & SIA.

Charles

Great post and it solves most of my problem. The infant policy for redemption tickets on SQ website is extremely vague. Do you happen to know the change and cancellation policy? Do we need to pay more than the usual adult change/cancellation fees?

Scott

I’ve come across a tricky situation albeit not with SQ. I booked a redemption ticket issued by Cathay Pacific but on a Qatar Airways flight (SIN-DOH-GVA return). I spent hours on the phone with both airlines trying to get an infant in-lap added and each have system or policy restrictions that make this impossible. If I was on a CX ticket and CX flight, there would be no issue. But infant in-lap on a redemption ticket with a third party carrier is impossible it seems (even a stand-alone ticket). Annoying! Would love to hear from anyone who has solved this, …  Read more »

I have 2 separate bookings from SIN-MEL-SIN and the CSO does not allow me to book a return ticket for my infant. In the end I have to pay 2 x one-way ticket.

did you try HUCA? i’ve heard a few reports of this happening, but it was resolved when calling back and getting another agent

What Documents Do I Need to Fly Internationally with Kids?

A young girl stands on the jet bridge with her suitcase and travel documents before embarking on one of the best airlines for kids.

If you’re wondering what documents babies and children need to fly internationally, you’re in the right place! There are a few different documents your children will need as U.S. citizens to travel internationally (if your kids have different citizenship, please refer to the rules and regulations for their country of citizenship). Then, other types of documents may be needed, depending on the airline, destination country, transit country, etc.

Documents You Need for International Travel with Kids

  • Valid US Passport : Regardless of age, children with U.S. citizenship need a valid passport for air travel to another country (even babies!). The application process for children under 16 needs to be completed in person. Both parents are required to be present. Children’s passports are valid for five years.
  • Proof of Relationship to Child : While you may not be asked for it, we highly recommend that you travel with some type of document proving your relationship to your child (e.g., birth certificate, adoption certificate, etc.). Please note, some countries or airlines will require this type of document. It is your responsibility to know the documents needed before you depart for your trip.
  • Child Travel Consent : If you are traveling without your child’s other parent, plan on bringing a letter of consent from the other parent to travel alone with your child. Some countries require letters to be notarized. This letter should contain the child’s basic information (e.g., name, gender, birthday, place of birth, passport number, etc.), both parents’ names and contact information, the traveling arrangements (flights, accommodations, other adults traveling in your party), and the destination.

Documents You Might Need for International Travel with Kids

  • A visa for the destination country , or a transit country (a country where a layover takes place).
  • Some countries require everyone to have vaccination records for specific vaccinations. Check the  U.S. State Department International Travel website for information about your destination country.
  • Each country has its own requirements (or recommendations) for documents needed to enter the country. Check the  U.S. State Department International Travel website for information about requirements for your destination country.
  • If you travel frequently, consider joining one of the Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP ).

Singapore with Kids: How to Plan a Singapore Family Trip 2024

Last Updated on March 6, 2024

Singapore is one of the most family friendly cities in the world. Here’s a local’s guide to traveling Singapore with kids.

Vibrant, tropical and multi-cultural: Singapore is a fantastic destination for kids. Over the past 10 years, Singapore has shed its sterile concrete jungle image to become an exciting garden city. These days, it’s studded with plenty of green spaces, cultural attractions and kid-friendly parks.

I might be biased since I’m originally from Singapore, but Singapore is really an awesome destination for family travelers.   I’ve brought my 7-year-old daughter to Singapore 8 times, and I’m currently back at home, revisiting and testing out all the newest attractions and kid-friendly spots in Singapore. Trust me, there are a lot!

For those planning to explore Singapore with kids, here are some practical advice to help you plan your Singapore family trip.

Traveling Singapore with kids is easy and fun thanks to the great infrastructure and kid-friendly amenities. The country has low crime rate and one of the highest per-capita GDPs in the world. It’s safe and clean, with efficient public transport. Food is outstanding, and there’s cheap local eats everywhere.

Kids are welcome everywhere, and almost every restaurant and mall has facilities like diaper changing pads, nursing rooms and kid toilets. Everything from the immaculate, buggy-friendly pavements to themed hotels makes traveling with kids easy.

A Singapore family trip usually involves visits to theme parks and museums — but it can also include cultural experiences in museums and exploring lush gardens, while devouring delicious, authentic Southeast Asian food.

Most people have heard of Singapore by now, but exactly where is  Singapore ? And is it a city, island, or country?

All three! Singapore is actually a city, an island and a nation located just off the southern tip of Malaysia. Singapore is an anomaly, and   we are quite proud of it. The country is currently the only city-island-nation in the world.

Singapore is a very young country, having gained independence only in 1965. We are a multi-racial nation: our ancestors came from neighboring Malaysia, India and China and brought with them their food and cultural traditions. This is what makes us so different and unique.

Singapore’s airport is a big hub in Southeast Asia , and serves many major cities around the world. Singapore Airlines is one of the best in the world, with excellent carriers and customer service.

You can get flights from New York to Singapore for around US$800 return (with transits in Tokyo or HongKong). Flights from Los Angeles to Singapore are slightly shorter (around 20 hours) and cost $700 return.

Flying London to Singapore is quite affordable and usually takes no more than 16 hours. I always fly Qatar Airways or British Airways as both have great track record and good prices.

Thanks to its location close to the equator, it’s HOT all year round in Singapore . The average temperature ranges from 26 to 30°C (or 78 to 86°F) throughout the year. Check out these wet activities to cool off with your kids!

The best time to visit is probably during the dry season (June to August). It is typically when the country has the least amount of rain, the lowest humidity, and the most sunshine.

Be warned: Singapore gets a lot of thundershowers. The monsoon season (November to January) is when Singapore receives the most rain. Fortunately, they usually don’t last long, and the sun returns to raise humidity.

Singapore is a small city state. With a land area of around 280 square miles (725 square km), Singapore is 0.5% the size of New York and 0.3% of London.

Honestly, you don’t need much time to explore Singapore. Most people spend 3 days in Singapore and that’s enough to get a good feel for it. Check out my recommended Singapore itinerary that packs in all the best of Singapore at a relatively leisure pace. If you have the time, I recommend 1 week in Singapore, and combining it with a trip to Malaysia (just a causeway away).

How to Get Around Singapore with Kids

The efficient MRT train system is an easy and cheap way to get around Singapore with kids. Children below 90cm tall travel free on trains and buses. Almost every part of the city is connected by the MRT. It’s air-conditioned and comfortable, although it gets crowded at rush hours (try to avoid it around 7-9am and 6-8pm).

You’ll need to get an EZ-Link card , a prepaid smart card that allows you to use the public transport (subway and buses) in Singapore. You can get this at any MRT station.

Taxis are reasonably priced in Singapore, especially if you’re just traveling around the city centre area. Grab (Singapore’s version of Uber) is also an easy and convenient way to get around the city island.

If you’re taking the taxi from the airport to the centre, it can cost more than S$30. The airport has an MRT station and it takes around 45 minutes to reach the city centre. You can also book an airport shuttle that will bring you to any downtown hotels for less than $10.

If you’re traveling with a baby or toddler, consider renting a car as that might be the most convenient way to get around. You can book a 3-day car rental in Singapore for US$250 or S$350. I always use DiscoverCars.com as they have consistently given the best rates and customer service.

Driving is easy in Singapore as roads are wide and well signposted. Also Singapore is a small island, and driving from one end to the other takes no more than 1 hour.

It’s easy to find free WiFi everywhere in Singapore. Most malls and public spaces have free WiFi networks. You just need to register with your foreign mobile number at any  Wireless@SG hotspot  and receive your login details via SMS.

Alternatively, you can   get an eSIM on Airalo before your trip and get instant data when you land. Just download the app before your trip, purchase a data package (eg. a 7-day 1GB plan for US$7.50), and voila! No need to change SIM cards or visit a telco store.

Things to Do in Singapore with Kids

If you’re not too tired from your flight to Singapore, kick start your Singapore family trip at the airport! Jewel Changi Airport has just opened to the public, and it’s a seriously impressive indoor entertainment area. The complex includes gardens, museums, retail, F&B dining, a hotel, and more.

Its iconic centerpiece, known as Rain Vortex, is the world’s tallest indoor waterfall surrounded by terraced forest settings. Admire the doughnut-shaped exterior framed in steel and glass from the top level, where you’ll find the lush gardens and fun kids-oriented park.

Almost all of Jewel is free to enjoy, except for the Canopy Park on the top level. With an admission ticket , you’ll gain access to all 4 different areas: Play around on the Discovery Slides and mess about in the mist of the Foggy Bowls; Appreciate the artistic skill on the Topiary Walk and enjoy flowers from the world over in the Petal Garden.

3 Days in Singapore Itinerary By A Local

At first I was skeptical about Singapore’s latest big-ticket attraction, but it blew my daughter and I away. The luscious Gardens by the Bay is home to over 16,000 plant species and floral displays, all tastefully assembled in a natural way.

The iconic Supertree Grove is the first stop for most people. You can also pay to walk on the Skyway , a network of walkway that hangs over the gardens. The Flower Dome is one of the two world’s largest columnless greenhouses, while the Cloud Forest houses the world’s tallest indoor waterfall.

Walking around the park won’t cost you a cent but there is a fee if you want to step inside the climate-controlled conservatories. The main park area is open from 9am to 9pm.

By night, the Supertrees at Gardens by the Bay are lit up in technicolor rays, with music in the backdrop. My daughter was especially impressed by the Rhapsody Light Show — it felt like Mother Nature was putting on a musical.

The show takes place everyday at 7.45pm and 8.45pm. Best of all, the 15-minute show is absolutely FREE. Drop by early to grab a good spot to enjoy the performance!

gardens by the bay light and sound show - great fun activities singapore

Within Gardens by the Bay, you’ll find Children’s Garden and Water Play , a water splash area that’s FREE for all. This is a favorite among families on sunny days: there’s a designated area for tots, where fish-shaped fountains send out water in gentle arcs, and plenty of seating for parents to sit back and relax. Designed for children aged 6 to 12 years, this water play area is perhaps the best in Singapore.

But this is just one of the many free-entry water play areas in Singapore. Almost every mall has a water splash area for kids, and they are all free to enter. Here’s a list of our favorite splash pools:

  • Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden at Singapore Botanic Gardens
  • Marina Barrage Water Playground
  • Splash-n-Surf at Singapore Sports Hub
  • VivoCity SkyPark
  • KidzPlay at  NEX Skygarden
  • Happy Park at Waterway Point
  • IMM Water Play Park

Within walking distance from Gardens by the Bay, you’ll find the wide and green spaces of Marina Barrage. It’s actually a reservoir, built across the mouth of Marina Channel, in the heart of the city.

The area has a huge green area that’s popular with families who come here to fly kites and enjoy a picnic. There’s also a water play area that kids love (mentioned above), and a handful of restaurants and bars.

Drink in the best views of Singapore from above at the Sands SkyPark on the 57th floor of Marina Bay Sands. If you’re not staying at this world-famous hotel, you can still visit by paying an entrance ticket to go to the SkyPark. Book your tickets here!

Both adults and kids alike will be impressed by the scenic views of Marina Bay. Tickets cost S$19.10 for adults and S$14.90 per child (2-12 years old). You can also buy a combo ticket for the SkyPark and Gardens by the Bay .

Every night, Marina Bay Sands put on a spectacular light and water show at its waterfront. Known as Spectra , the light show is a FREE nightly event that you can catch from the boardwalk. There are lots of seating space on the boardwalk and steps. The 15-minute show takes place every night at 8pm and 9pm (and 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays).

Housed in one of Singapore’s most impressive architectural structures is the ArtScience Museum with its equally impressive range of exhibits. Located next to Marina Bay Sands is a unique building that resembles a water lily rising from the Singapore River.

The name ArtScience is certainly apt here as the different galleries highlight the relationship between the arts and the sciences.   It has the same exhibition as Tokyo’s MORI Digital Museum , with fascinating digital artwork and interactive displays for both kids and adults. Different exhibitions have different prices but I recommend getting a discounted All-Access ticket .

Overlooking the green open Padang field, the newly opened National Gallery Singapore is housed in two impressive colonial buildings in downtown Singapore. They gallery has the world’s largest public collection of Singaporean and Southeast Asian art, consisting of over 8,000 artworks.

Don’t worry about kids being bored! On Level 1 of the  National Gallery Singapore  you’ll find the Keppel Centre for Art Education, a wonderful art facility dedicated to nurturing children’s creativity and curiosity. Kids can make their own virtual ceramic pots at an interactive station.

There is no shortage of greenery in Singapore: HortPark is an excellent spot to learn about the flora and fauna of Singapore. Children will love exploring the Pitter Patter Potter Garden with its vibrant colors and a playground to top off the fun. There’s also a nature play garden, themed gardens and workshops for kids.

Tucked amidst the lush greenscape of HortPark is a charming “garden- to-table” French-Italian restaurant, called Vineyard . This is a good spot to chill out and treat yourselves to a decadent dinner after a day out in the sun.

Located around Singapore’s largest reservoir, the MacRitchie Reservoir Park offers extensive hiking trails. The most interesting of which is the TreeTop Walk , a 800 ft (250m) suspension bridge that brings hikers over the forest canopy. It is far enough away from the city that you can even spot monkeys, monitor lizards and even flying lemurs. It’s not very well known among visitors, which makes it all the more worth visiting during your Singapore family trip.

Located close to the shopping boulevard of Orchard Road,  Singapore Botanic Gardens is a really pleasant green space in the heart of the city. I love going there with my daughter for a picnic or evening stroll, and a walk in the orchid centre. It’s home to over 10,000 species of plants and some animals. We’ve even seen monitor lizards roaming the park — don’t worry, they’re harmless.

Give your kids a crash course in Singapore’s culture at Chinatown. You’ll not only find the best Singaporean food here, but also a vibrant market, ethnic Chinese shops and impressive Buddhist temples. Chinese New Year is the best time to visit Chinatown as several of the streets here are closed off to make way for a big outdoor festive market.

Head straight to the Chinatown Heritage Centre , a kid-friendly interactive museum that showcases the Chinese history of Singapore. Continue to stroll along the open-air market on Pagoda Street, where you’ll find colorful cheongsams (traditional dress), lion dance puppets and Singaporean souvenirs.

In recent years, Haji Lane has transformed from a traditional Malay quarter to a trendy hipster neighborhood. It’s tons of fun thanks to the colorful cafes and museums, perfect for Instagram-addicted teens. If your kids love animals, don’t miss Meomi Cat Cafe , a purr-fect cafe for all cat lovers.

First, learn about Singapore’s Malay culture at the Malay Heritage Centre and visit the beautiful golden Sultan Mosque or Masjid Sultan. Then check out the authentically Singaporean ‘ Children Little Museum ‘, a place that showcases Singaporean retro collectibles, antique toys and old-school gramophones. Stepping into the store is almost equivalent to you stepping into a time machine that travelled back in time.

Of all the ethnic enclaves in Singapore, Little India is probably my favorite. The buzzing district is vibrant and distinctive, plus it’s just a short MRT ride from the centre. Introduce your kids to Hindu temples steep in history, soak up authentic Singaporean Indian food and visit the famous stores for Indian sweets and knick knacks.

The best temple to visit in the area is Sri Veeramakakaliamman Temple , dedicated to goddess Kali. Tekka Market is a senses-assaulting place with spice stalls and shops selling saris and jewelry. Don’t miss Mustafa Centre , a 24-hour mall that sells everything from Indian ingredients to electronics and home appliances. Also be sure to stop by for an Instagram shot at the rainbow-colored Tan Teng Niah’s former house, which is the only surviving Chinese villa in the area.

Day Trips from Singapore with Kids

There’s loads of family fun to enjoy at Singapore’s own tropical playground, Sentosa Island. The offshore island is super easy to reach on public transport, and it’s jam-packed with theme parks. There are a few beaches here (which are sadly reclaimed and overlook big cargo ships), but the cool kid-friendly beach bars kinda make up for it.

To get there, just take the MRT (subway) to Harbourfront station and transfer to the Sentosa Express tram, cable car or bus 123. There is seriously A LOT to do here, as well as family resorts where you stay for the night. If you want to visit a few attractions, I recommend booking combo tickets that’ll you save a few bucks.

Here’s a list of the kid-friendly attractions on Sentosa:

  • S.E.A. Aquarium — one of the biggest aquariums in the world
  • Universal Studio Singapore — giant theme park perfect for kids above 7
  • Adventure Cove Waterpark — a water play with massive slides and a Rainbow Reef where you can snorkel with fish
  • Skyline Luge and Chairlift — an exciting ride up the hill on a chairlift and whizz down on a cart
  • Mega Adventure Park — ziplining, rock-climbing and outdoor trampolines for the teens
  • KidZania — let your kids role play in this mini replica city
  • iFly Singapore — both kids and adults can experience ‘skydiving’ indoors
  • Tanjong Beach Club — dog-friendly beach bar with its own infinity pool overlooking the sea

Add a bit of adventure to your Singapore family trip with a visit to the old-fashioned, outlying islet of Pulau Ubin . Getting there is half the fun: take the MRT to Tanah Merah MRT Station, then board Bus No. 2 to Changi Village bus interchange. Changi Point jetty is not far from the bus interchange. From the jetty, take a bumboat ride (S$2 per adult one way) to Ubin. The island itself is bucolic bliss – rent bikes and go exploring.

This small, relatively flat island is the perfect place to spend a day cycling and exploring. Kids will love the Sensory Trail and Chek Jawa Wetlands , both filled with plenty of flora and fauna. Kids bikes are available for hire, as are child seats and helmets.

Another spot in the far east of Singapore worth visiting with kids is Wild Wild Wet. The water park is well equipped with all kinds of rides and aquatic features of kids of all ages, and it’s surprisingly affordable (prices from S$19 for kids under 12, to $26 for adults). It’s located near the Pasir Ris MRT station, the last station on the East-West line, so most people take a day trip out here.

Where to Stay in Singapore with Kids

Hotels in Singapore aren’t the cheapest, as estate prices are high. That said, you can find many hotels with themed rooms or kid-friendly facilities in Singapore if you’re willing to splurge on your Singapore family trip. Those with limited budget can also opt for hotels that are further out of the city.

The newest addition to Singapore’s epic skyline, Marina Bay Sands is an iconic landmark of the city now and definitely worth splurging. We’ve stayed here 3 times and it’s never disappointed. The rooftop pool is only open to guests. Check rates here.

We recently stayed at The Clan Hotel Singapore and were truly impressed by the new hotel’s location and contemporary design. I particularly love how the hotel pays tribute to the Singaporean heritage through details like a welcome tea ceremony, modern Chinese decor, and local dishes in their breakfast menu. Check rates here.

Located close to Chinatown, Furama Riverfront has themed bedrooms specially designed for kids. The rooms even include bean bags, kid sized table / chairs and a playstation. This is definitely suitable for toddlers and tweens. Check rates here.

Located on Sentosa island, the family-friendly resor t has a large central swimming pool, with a shallow kid’s area, a splash park, as well as safari-themed water slides. They also offer a family package which includes a family room, breakfast and dinner buffet, as well as access to the kids club and water-sport facilities. Check rates here.

Also located in Sentosa, this is a premium resort housed in a colonial complex. Capella Singapore boasts a beautiful three-pier swimming pool and upscale restaurants that serve a fantastic breakfast spread. We stayed here with our daughter when she was just 6 months ago, and were really impressed. Read my review and check the rates.

Singapore food is a vibrant melting pot of flavors from different ethnic groups: a reflection of how multi-cultural we are. And no matter where in the city, there are always plenty of choices when it comes to Singapore food: from traditional hawker food to gourmet heritage restaurants serving authentic Singapore dishes.

The megadiverse cuisine consists of a huge array of food types. Here’s a short list of local dishes to try on your Singapore family trip. Click here for the full list of the best Singapore dishes to try !

  • Char kway teow — flat rice noodles fried in black sweet sauce
  • Oyster omelette — cruncy omelette with fresh oysters
  • Bak chor mee — minced meat noodles
  • Hainanese chicken rice – braised chick served in fragrant rice
  • Satay — BBQ meat skewers served with peanut sauce
  • Chilli crabs — Singapore’s national dish!

Where to Eat in Singapore with Kids

The best places to eat in Singapore are in   hawker centers : open-concept food courts but an institution of their own. They serve what you would call Singapore street food, with each hawker stall specializing in one dish.

Prices are really affordable: A plate of noodles costs around S$3 (or US$2), while a full seafood meal sets you back less than S$30 (US$21) per person. They are clean and organized, and vendors have to adhere to certain hygiene levels by law. Check out the best places to eat in Singapore.

There are also food courts, that are air-conditioned eateries usually located in shopping malls. If your kids aren’t adventurous eaters, there are plenty of fast-food outlets and international restaurants, like Burger King, Shake Shack and Black Angus Steakhouse.

  • Tiong Bahru Food Centre
  • Maxwell Food Centre
  • Golden Mile Food Centre
  • Chinatown Complex
  • Lau Pat Sat Festival Market
  • No Signboard Seafood Restaurant (my favorite for chilli crabs)
  • Mellben Seafood (another popular place for crabs)
  • Violet Oon (famous for Peranakan food)
  • The Banana Leaf Apolo (excellent Indian biryani)
  • Boon Tong Kee (well-known chicken rice chain)

Because of the tropical weather, you won’t have to fret too much about dressing for the weather in sunny Singapore. Keep it light, comfortable and cool.

I recommend packing lots of singlets, shorts, dresses and thin pants for your Singapore family trip. Don’t forget your swim wear, kids’ floaties, UV protected swimming shirt, and hat. Be sure to bring sunscreen and mosquito repellant.

The subway (MRT) in Singapore is often packed and commuters are in a rush. It can be a challenge walking around with a toddler who can’t keep up with the pace. Decide if a stroller is useful as it can be a pain getting strollers in and out of the subway and along busy walkways.

Final Tips for Traveling Singapore with Kids

  • Singapore is nicknamed the “fine city” for good reasons. There are strict laws and fines are imposed upon violation. For example, there’s a fine of $300 for littering in public spaces.
  • Carrying durian in public transport and taxis (and some hotels) is forbidden. The durian is a tropical fruit famous throughout Southeast Asia, characterized by its prickly shell and strong smell!
  • Tap water is safe to drink in Singapore. You can save money and cut down on plastic by refilling a water bottle.
  • There are public toilets everywhere and most toilets in malls have baby-changing platforms — but some places still have the squat toilet (hole in the ground), so get your kids prepared for that.
  • Breastfeeding is generally not done in public, though you can use a shawl to cover. Many malls have nursing rooms where you can breastfeed in private if you prefer.
  • Most restaurants have high chairs and kids’ dining set. Only certain hawker centers will have high chairs, bring a portable booster seat if your kids are still too small to sit on an adult chair.
  • If you’re in need of some childcare, hire an experienced and trustworthy babysitter online at NannySOS .

singapore with kids practical travel tips

Phew! That’s it from me for now. Thanks for reading all the way to the end.

On an ending note, I’d like to remind you not to plan too much when traveling Singapore with kids. Because there’s SO much to do, many people end up trying to pack too many places into their Singapore family trip.

Keep in mind that you’re in Singapore to have fun and explore, so slow down and enjoy the beautiful country with your family in a relaxing pace! I hope this guide has been useful to help you plan your Singapore family trip. Feel free to leave me any questions or comments you may have below.

Over the years (and traveling to 140+ countries), I’ve learned a thing or two about travel planning. I’ve put together this list of travel resources that I personally use to find the best deals and book travel! For more details, check out my travel tips resource page .

  • Booking Flights : Kayak is brilliant for finding the best dates to fly as it allows you to search for the lowest airfares within a 3-day period. Then I use Skyscanner as they’ve consistently given me the lowest airfares.
  • Accommodations:  I always use  Booking.com   to book hotels, mainly because of the flexible cancellation policy and good customer service. You can also find short-term rental apartments there (I prefer not to use Airbnb due to the extra charges).
  • Travel Insurance:  It’s important to have travel insurance, regardless of whether you’re traveling for a few days or months. Safety Wing is the most popular travel insurance company for COVID19-coverage. I use their Nomad Insurance plan , which covers any healthcare expenses I may have worldwide. Refer to my travel insurance guide for more details.
  • Health Advice:  I always refer to the travel guides on the   CDC website  for recommended medications and vaccines. You can get them at your travel doctor’s office or a walk-in pharmacy.
  • Tours:  If you’re looking for all-encompassing tours, I recommend small-group adventure tour outfitter, G Adventures . I’ve traveled with them to Antarctica, Mongolia, Svalbard, and Nepal, and loved every single trip. For day tours, I always book with  Viator  and  GetYourGuide ; they have easy booking systems and free cancellations.
  • Car Rental: I always book car rentals on Discover Cars , as they’ve consistently given us the best rates and customer service (with free cancellations). We’ve used them in Seychelles, South Africa, Spain, Peru, and Mexico.
  • Transportation : Whenever possible, I book local transportation online using  Bookaway and Busbud . They’re more reliable than many local transport websites and cover trains, buses, and car hire.
  • Restaurants: TripAdvisor is my go-to resource for restaurant reviews and bookings. I also make restaurant reservations on OpenTable .
  • Internet/Data : Get an eSIM on Airalo before your trip to stay connected wherever you go. Just download the app before your trip, purchase a data package and voila! No need to change SIM cards or visit a telco store.

This was incredibly useful. Thank you very much.

What a brilliant summary – man thanks. With kids using the MRT, I realise that those under 7 get the free travel, but if we are a tourist and have kids aged 12 and 14, do they just pay the adult fare (or is there some sort of student rate that can be accessed)? Many thanks

' src=

hi May, yes I’m afraid as tourists you’ll need to pay the adult fare for your kids. On my recent trip (July 2022), I had to get an EZ Link card for my daughter as well and I paid adult fare for her (she’s 7). Hope this helps and have a great trip to Singapore!

Family-friendly travel: World's best airlines for flying with children

From gulf air's sky nannies to united airlines' new free family seat reservations, several international airlines offer perks to make flying with children easier.

United Airlines has introduced a new seating policy designed to help families travelling with children find seats together on flights for free.

On flights where side-by-side seats are not available, United passengers will be able to switch to another flight to the same destination. There will be no service charge or fare difference applicable for travellers that switch flights due to a lack of adjacent seats on the original service.

“We’re focused on delivering a great experience for our younger passengers and their parents and know it often starts with the right seat,” said Linda Jojo, chief customer officer for United.

Adjacent seat options will be available on United Airlines immediately, with the complete policy change planned to go into effect in early March.

The move is designed to make travelling with children easier and will be welcomed by parents who will know that when you’re flying with little ones, every little gesture helps.

Child-friendly offerings on international airlines can range from generous to non-existent. Whether it’s being able to make free seat reservations, enjoy priority boarding or access child-friendly in-flight entertainment, airlines have many ways to make air travel easier for families.

The National compared family services on several international carriers to round up the best airlines for family-friendly travel.

Search the chart below to find details of the family perks that airlines offer.

Families flying Emirates can enjoy priority boarding. Photo: Emirates

Known for its luxury offerings, Emirates also offers plenty of travel perks for families.

This includes complimentary prams at Dubai International Airport and family check-in desks. There are also dedicated ground staff and cabin crew, trained to assist families when travelling. On board, there’s plenty to keep children entertained including animal-themed soft toys, more than 100 kids channels on the in-flight entertainment system and travel-themed activity packs and magazines created by Emirates and Lonely Planet Kids.

Families travelling with babies will also get a handy infant kit containing essentials such as nappies, bibs and wipes, and there are organic baby meals available. The airline says it “aims to seat families together” but if you want to guarantee that everyone will be next to each other, you have to pay for seat reservations.

Etihad Airways

The UAE’s national airline is a family-friendly option with a host of perks for those travelling with children.

Last year, Etihad introduced its Little VIP campaign , as part of which families are offered dedicated check-in desks and priority boarding, plus a host of in-flight amenities all themed around Warner Bros. These include Tweety blankets for infants, Scooby-Doo activity kits, plus fun lunch boxes and a variety of snacks for children.

For passengers travelling with infants, as well as complimentary bassinet seats available on request, there’s also an additional baggage allowance that includes a 10kg checked bag and a 5kg cabin bag.

Qatar Airways

Qatar's Hamad International Airport has five activity centres dotted around the terminal, designed specifically for families. Photo: Qatar Airways

The world’s best airline in 2022 according to Skytrax is also noted for its family-friendly offerings and Qatar Airways' home airport has five children's activity centres for young flyers to expel any preflight energy.

Children flying with Qatar Airways are welcomed into the Oryx Kids Club, a service filled with touches designed to make journeys more fun. Cabin crew distribute activity packs filled with soft toys, colouring books and more, and children’s meals are served in colourful reusable lunch boxes that kids can take with them after the flight.

Infants are also looked after with free bassinet seats for parents and special kits handed out that contain nappies and baby food. There’s also an additional 10kg of luggage for parents travelling with infants.

All Nippon Airways, or ANA as it is better known, ticks several boxes for family-friendly flying.

The Japanese airline makes sure that families can opt to sit together on flights by offering free seat reservations. Parents travelling solo with children under three can also request the airline’s special airport assistance, which provides an escort from the check-in counter to the boarding gate, and again on arrival at the destination.

Loaner strollers are available to use right up until travellers board the plane, or passengers can opt to bring their own strollers on-board, so long as they fit within cabin baggage size restrictions, however, no additional pieces of cabin baggage can be carried alongside strollers.

Lufthansa scores points for its family travel policies. EPA

Germany's flag carrier Lufthansa scores points for some of its family-friendly travel policies, including allowing infants (or more likely their guardians) a generous additional 23kg of checked luggage.

The airline also offers free bassinet seats for those flying with infants and has special children’s meals, plus a limited quantity of baby meals available on flights. Families travelling with children under the age of five are welcome to pre-board flights and those booked to fly in premium cabins can let children enjoy the dedicated kids area in the Lufthansa business lounge at Frankfurt Airport.

Given it has a giant kangaroo as its mascot, it's no surprise that the national airline of Australia offers some family perks. Children flying Qantas are given Joey Club kits containing activity books, Etch A Sketches and cosy kangaroo socks on international flights. Special children’s meals are also available.

Parents travelling with infants might not find the airline quite as family-friendly, as those flying with children under the age of two have to bring their own baby food, and will have to pay to secure a bassinet seat. Qantas does have some nappies and wipes on board for infants, although the airline notes that the supply is limited.

Air Canada offers priority boarding and special check-in desks for families. Photo: Air Canada / Facebook

One of the friendliest airlines for family travel, Air Canada offers a host of features designed to make flying with kids easier. As well as free seat reservations for families and preboarding for those travelling with children up to the age of six, Canada’s largest airline has dedicated family check-in desks at major airports, meaning families don't need to wait in long queues.

Children each get their own colourful luggage tag as a souvenir of their flight and special meals for infants and children are available on all Air Canada flights.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by SAUDIA (@saudi_airlines)

The national airline of Saudi Arabia offers a few family services for travellers.

Free bassinet seats for infants can be booked before travel and children will be offered special meals, plus given kits containing colouring books and crayons. To sit together, passengers must pay to guarantee the service and while preboarding is available to those with small children, passengers must request the service from a member of Saudia’s ground staff.

Parents can bring one piece of baby equipment — such as a stroller or car seat on board — but there is no additional luggage allowance for infants.

United Airlines

United Airlines' new seating policy aims to make travel easier for families. Photo: PRNewsfoto / United Airlines

A new policy that allows passengers travelling with children to pre-book seats together free of charge makes things easier for family travel on United Airlines.

The US carrier also offers travellers the chance to change to another flight if adjacent seats are not available, and won’t charge any fees or fare difference to do so. That is coupled with free bassinet seats and priority boarding for those travelling with infants, although additional luggage allowance for infants is capped at one small nappy bag, so parents will need to pack only baby’s essentials.

British Airways

View this post on Instagram A post shared by British Airways (@british_airways)

In an effort to make travel easier for families, British Airways offers several perks for those travelling with children.

Seat selection is free of charge for any passengers flying with an infant, and bassinet seat — or carry cots as BA refers to them — are also available free of charge. Travellers flying from London Heathrow can take advantage of family check-in desks so that there are no lengthy queues to wait in and the airline offers a generous additional luggage allowance for little ones with one free checked bag, an extra cabin bag and two pieces of baby gear allowed.

Singapore Airlines

Children flying with Singapore Airlines will each get a soft toy or activity pack. Photo: Singapore Airlines

The flag carrier of Singapore is often lauded for its family-friendly travel offerings.

Singapore Airlines allows travellers to guarantee that everyone sits together on flights by offering free advance seat reservations for families. And preboarding is open to those flying with infants or toddlers, giving families the chance to get settled on flights before other passengers board. The airline also offers baby and infant meals and either soft toys or activity packs depending on the children’s ages.

Gulf Air’s services can make travel easier for family holidays. In addition to priority check-in lanes for families at Bahrain International Airport, the airline has a team of sky nannies whose main responsibility is to be an extra pair of hands for those flying with children — invaluable for parents travelling solo with a child.

There’s also a generous additional baggage allowance for infants which includes 15kg of luggage, plus two items of baby equipment. Passengers hoping to secure seats for the family together on Gulf Air flights can make preflight seat reservations, but should note there is a fee for this service.

Singapore Airlines’ First-class Suites Might Be the Best Way to Fly — What to Know

Here’s what to expect if you’ve booked a 50-square-foot suite on the world’s best airline.

singapore airlines family travel

Courtesy of Singapore Airlines

Named the best international airline in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards for 27 consecutive years, Singapore Airlines is known for its world-class in-flight services and amenities. While even passengers in economy are granted thoughtful touches, like a hot towel service and a well-stocked amenity kit (which includes toothpaste, a toothbrush, socks, and eye shades), nothing is as luxurious as the first-class suites . Exclusively available on the airline’s A380 aircraft, Travel + Leisure previously reported that the suites are like “ hotel rooms in the sky ” — and they’re like nothing you’ve ever seen before.

Currently, the A380 services six destinations worldwide: Frankfurt Airport, Hong Kong International Airport, London Heathrow, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, Sydney Airport, and John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York .

However, as of May 15, 2023, the A380 will no longer fly its current U.S. route from JFK to Singapore Changi Airport via Frankfurt. The Boeing 777-300ER will take its place, and while this is not-so-great news for U.S. travelers who want to experience the suites, the 777 aircraft still has a first-class cabin that provides plenty of privacy and comfort — passengers just won’t have the option of creating a double bed.

Here are all the perks that come with a first-class suite on Singapore Airlines.

Singapore Airlines Airport Experience

The exact airport perks depend on where you are in the world. Passengers flying out of Singapore Changi Airport can utilize the dedicated first-class check-in area if they book a suite or a first-class ticket (or if they’re a Solitaire PPS Club member ). Here, a passenger relations officer helps with check-in, and a porter handles your baggage. Once you’ve finished the check-in process, you’ll be escorted through a private immigration line and into the SilverKris Lounge or to the boarding gate.

Even if you’re not flying out of Changi Airport, those with suite access can find SilverKris Lounges and partner lounges in various airports across the globe — including Hong Kong International, London Heathrow, and Sydney Airport. Although each lounge has slightly different services, most are outfitted with food, light snacks, Wi-Fi, rest areas and quiet rooms, bartender and barista services, and restrooms and showers.

The Singapore Airlines Suite

With only six suites on board the aircraft — laid out in three rows of two — each one was designed to provide the most luxurious flying experience imaginable. While some first-class tickets grant you access to a seat that turns into a bed, Singapore Airlines takes it up a notch. If you’ve specifically booked the Airbus A380 private suite, you’ll not only have a swiveling, reclining leather armchair, but a separate bed furnished with pillows, blankets, and linens (from French luxury label Lalique ) as well. The sliding doors and electronic window blinds ensure your privacy, but each suite was also designed to accommodate passengers traveling in pairs. If you want to merge suites, simply lower the privacy divider to combine your 50-square-foot cabins — combined, the two beds will be about as big as a double bed.

Other aspects of the suites are just as thoughtful. Each passenger has an en-suite wardrobe to place cabin luggage (no need to worry about overhead bins), and the suite’s features — including lighting and in-flight entertainment — can be controlled from a handheld tablet. The 32-inch HD touchscreen monitor comes with an enhanced KrisWorld entertainment system and Bang & Olufsen noise-canceling headphones, a far cry from anything you’ve experienced when flying in economy. Those working from the air will appreciate the complimentary Wi-Fi and the console that turns into an oversized pop-out table next to the armchair.

In-flight Amenities

Overnight flights are made significantly more relaxing with the addition of pajamas, slippers, and an amenity kit from Lalique. While Singapore Airlines may not provide showers to its premier passengers (à la Emirates ), there are two spacious lavatories with a sit-down vanity counter, wash basin, and toilet.

Singapore Airlines also works with California resort Golden Door to provide “enhanced wellness” to passengers aboard its flights. Along with health-conscious dining (more on that below), the program includes exercise and stretching programs for better sleep and overall comfort on long international flights.

Singapore Airlines Suite Food and Drink Menus

Champagne —  Krug Grande Cuvee and Taittinger Comtes de Champagne , of course — and Wedgwood bone china tableware are par for the course when you’re flying in a suite. Passengers dine on their in-flight meals, preordered via the “ 'Book the Cook ” service, from the comfort of a personal table. As paper menus were phased out due to the COVID-19 pandemic, meals can be ordered up to 24 hours before the flight. Created by Singapore Airline’s International Culinary Panel and changed based on ingredient availability and seasonality, the menus can also be viewed by scanning a QR code in flight or previewed online up to eight days before takeoff. Options vary by flight, but you’ll find a range of delicacies, including grilled salmon, Singapore chicken rice, and lobster thermidor. Additionally, the airline makes sure to provide options for all special dietary requirements.

Prices for the first-class suite range depending on destination and travel date, but can cost upwards of $20,000.

Singapore KrisFlyer: Ultimate guide to earning, redeeming and elite status

Andrew Kunesh

As a partner of many transferable points programs — and one of the best ways to book Singapore Airlines' coveted first-class Suites product — there's much to love about Singapore Airlines' KrisFlyer program.

Even if Singapore isn't in your travel plans, KrisFlyer's Star Alliance and non-alliance award charts have some hidden gems you should know about. From booking one-way award seats to Hawaii for less than 15,000 miles to earning valuable miles with credit cards, keep reading to find out the ins and outs of Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer so you can decide if KrisFlyer miles are of value to you.

Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer program

singapore airlines family travel

Singapore Airlines is the flag carrier of Singapore, offering connections to major cities in Australasia, Europe, North America and beyond. The airline also has several fifth-freedom routes , some of the most well known being New York to Frankfurt; Houston to Manchester, England; and Los Angeles to Tokyo.

The Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer loyalty program has continued to publish an award chart so you can redeem your miles at a predictable rate. However, it publishes a different award chart for flights flown by partners. For example, here's the Star Alliance award chart and the Alaska Airlines award chart . When flying Singapore Airlines and its partners, you earn KrisFlyer miles based on the distance flown.

Finally, the airline has two basic elite status tiers, with the higher tier offering Star Alliance Gold benefits. In addition, Singapore Airlines has two special elite status tiers for big spenders. We'll take a closer look at how to earn Singapore Airlines elite status and give an overview of each tier's benefits later in the article.

Earning Singapore KrisFlyer miles

singapore airlines family travel

There are several ways to earn KrisFlyer miles. You can earn by flying on Singapore Airlines and its Star Alliance partners , like United Airlines and Air Canada . You can also transfer miles from different credit card programs, stay with hotel partners and purchase through the KrisFlyer shopping portal.

Earn by flying with Singapore Airlines

When you fly with Singapore Airlines, you'll earn miles based on distance flown and fare class. Here's what you'll earn on tickets issued and operated by Singapore Airlines:

To calculate how many miles you'll earn on a flight, find your ticket's fare class in the email confirmation you received after booking your flight. Then, head to the Singapore Airlines miles calculator .

For example, a Premium Economy Lite fare (indicated by the R fare class) earns 8,440 miles on a one-way flight from San Francisco to Singapore if you don't have any elite status with KrisFlyer. That's 100% of the flight distance.

Singapore Airlines is a member of the Star Alliance, so you can earn KrisFlyer miles when you fly with other Star Alliance members. In addition, you can earn miles with non-alliance partners like Alaska Airlines, JetBlue and Virgin Atlantic.

Each of these airlines has its own Singapore Airlines earning chart. You can view the full Singapore Airlines earning chart for partners on the airline's website . To calculate your earnings, find your fare class underneath your airline partner's name and multiply your flight's distance by the percentage listed.

Earn with credit cards

While Singapore Airlines doesn't offer a cobranded credit card in the U.S., the airline partners with several major transferable rewards programs, including:

  • American Express Membership Rewards : 1:1 transfer ratio; transfers usually take less than 24 hours .
  • Capital One : 1:1 transfer ratio; transfers usually occur instantly .
  • Citi ThankYou Rewards : 1:1 transfer ratio; transfers usually take less than 24 hours .
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards : 1:1 transfer ratio; transfers usually occur within one day , but some readers have reported transfer times of up to seven days.
  • Marriott Bonvoy : 3:1 transfer ratio, plus a 5,000-mile bonus for every 60,000 points transferred; transfers usually take less than 48 hours .

singapore airlines family travel

Earning transferable rewards with one or more of these programs and transferring them to Singapore Airlines is one of the easiest ways to earn KrisFlyer miles. However, we only recommend transferring credit card points to KrisFlyer if you have a specific redemption in mind.

The following cards all currently offer strong welcome bonuses that you could easily convert to KrisFlyer miles:

  • American Express® Gold Card
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express
  • The Business Platinum Card® from American Express
  • Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card
  • Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred Card
  • Ink Business Preferred Credit Card

Earn with the KrisShop

Singapore Airlines used to have a KrisFlyer Spree shopping portal, which operated much like the U.S.-based airline shopping portals .

However, Singapore replaced the KrisFlyer Spree portal with the KrisShop portal , which lets you buy products directly from Singapore Airlines. You can earn up to 4 miles per Singapore dollar spent (roughly 5 miles per U.S. dollar) when you shop through the KrisShop portal.

Earn with hotel partners

Singapore Airlines has partnerships with many major hotel companies, including Marriott, IHG, Hilton and Hyatt. The airline also partners with several smaller hotel groups, like Shangri-La, Pan Pacific and Worldhotels. You can view a full list of partners on the Singapore Airlines website .

How you earn miles on stays depends on the partner. Some hotel companies will let you earn miles instead of hotel points, while others let you convert your hotel points to KrisFlyer miles. For example, Marriott Bonvoy points transfer at a 3:1 ratio to KrisFlyer, and you'll earn a 5,000-mile bonus for every 60,000 points transferred.

Earning KrisFlyer miles with hotels can sometimes make sense, but not in all cases. In many cases, you may get more value by earning hotel points.

Redeeming Singapore KrisFlyer miles

singapore airlines family travel

You'll get the most value by redeeming your miles for flights on Singapore Airlines and its partners. We'll review how to book these redemptions and discuss some of the most interesting award chart sweet spots below.

Redeem for Singapore Airlines flights

Historically, Singapore Airlines has only released its long-haul business- and first-class awards to KrisFlyer members; however, you can now book long-haul Singapore Airlines business-class flights with programs like Air Canada Aeroplan .

Singapore Airlines has two redemption tiers: Saver and Advantage. Saver award space is generally harder to come by but costs fewer miles to redeem and allows one stopover on round-trip bookings. Advantage award space is more expensive but easier to come by and includes up to two free stopovers on a round-trip ticket.

You can view the Singapore Airlines award chart on the airline's website . All Singapore Airlines award space can be found and booked online, so there's usually no need to call. However, if you want to hold an award seat while you transfer miles, Singapore Airlines generally charges 25 Singapore dollars (around $19) or 2,500 miles.

Spontaneous Escapes

Singapore Airlines publishes monthly Spontaneous Escapes , where redemption prices on selected routes are discounted by varying amounts, usually 20% or 30%. While not all routes are included, some long-haul routes are, so it is worth checking if your preferred route is included in this month's discounts.

Best Singapore Airlines redemptions from the US

One of the best ways to redeem Singapore Airlines miles is on the carrier's fifth-freedom flights from the U.S . If you want to go to Europe, consider booking the airline's flights from New York to Frankfurt or from Houston to Manchester. If you find Saver award space, these can be booked for 81,000 miles each way in business class or 97,000 miles in first.

Additionally, the airline operates flights from Los Angeles to Tokyo. Saver rates on these flights are 103,500 miles each way in business class or 120,500 miles in first.

Finally, Singapore Airlines operates ultra-long-haul nonstop Airbus A350 flights (without a first-class cabin) from various U.S. airports to Singapore. Here are the Saver business-class award rates from each of its North American gateways:

  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO) : 107,000 miles
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) : 107,000 miles
  • Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) : 107,000 miles
  • Vancouver International Airport (YVR) : 107,000 miles
  • Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) : 111,500 miles
  • John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) : 111,500 miles

Stopovers on Singapore Airlines award tickets

As mentioned, Singapore Airlines allows stopovers on its award tickets . Saver award tickets include one stopover on a round-trip ticket, while Advantage award tickets include one stopover on a one-way ticket and two on a round-trip ticket. All flights must be operated by Singapore Airlines to use the KrisFlyer stopover.

You can add stopovers to an open-jaw ticket by booking two one-way Advantage awards. For example, you can book an Advantage award from Houston to Manchester to Singapore and then a separate Advantage award from Singapore to Frankfurt to New York.

If your city pair is eligible for a stopover, you'll be able to add a stopover online.

Redeem on partner flights

You can redeem KrisFlyer miles for flights with partner airlines, including some outside the Star Alliance. The Star Alliance award chart is posted on the KrisFlyer website . If you look at the chart, know that the rates shown are for round-trip tickets, but one-way bookings cost half the miles shown.

You can book Star Alliance awards on the KrisFlyer website. To do so, input your search on the homepage, check the "Redeem flights" box and search. On the next page, toggle the "Show flights for" selection from "Singapore Airlines" to "Star Alliance."

Best KrisFlyer Star Alliance bookings in the US

KrisFlyer miles offer a great way to book premium domestic tickets with United Airlines. For example, you can book premium transcontinental business-class flights for just 26,000 miles one-way, making it the best way to fly United Polaris seats from Newark to Los Angeles and San Francisco.

You can use KrisFlyer miles to fly to Hawaii , too. In many cases, the 19,500 miles KrisFlyer charges for a one-way economy ticket is far less than what United MileagePlus requires for the same seat. Meanwhile, business class costs 39,000 miles one-way. This can be a good way to book long-haul Hawaii flights from cities like Newark and Washington.

Booking Alaska Airlines flights with KrisFlyer miles

You can also redeem KrisFlyer miles for Alaska flights. The airline offers great redemption rates on Alaska Airlines flights, but you can't book Alaska flights with stops. Instead, you can only book nonstop Alaska Airlines flights with KrisFlyer miles.

There are still some great deals on the Singapore Airlines' Alaska Airlines award chart (PDF link). You can book a one-way economy-class flight from the U.S. West Coast to Hawaii for just 13,500 KrisFlyer miles. This is one of the cheapest ways to use miles to fly to Hawaii and is an option to consider if you live near an airport that has Alaska nonstop service to Hawaii.

Singapore KrisFlyer elite status

singapore airlines family travel

Singapore Airlines offers two tiers of elite status: KrisFlyer Elite Silver and KrisFlyer Elite Gold. These elite status tiers require 25,000 and 50,000 elite miles in 12 consecutive months, respectively. You'll earn elite miles when you fly with Singapore Airlines, Scoot, Juneyao Air, Star Alliance airlines and other select airline partners.

Both elite status tiers earn 25% bonus miles on flights operated by Singapore Airlines in eligible fare classes. But here's a look at the top perks of KrisFlyer Elite Silver:

  • Select standard seats in economy when flying Singapore Airlines
  • Automatically assigned seat at booking when flying Scoot
  • Priority reservation waitlist and airport standby
  • Star Alliance Silver status

And here are the top perks of KrisFlyer Elite Gold:

  • Select forward zone or standard seats in economy when flying Singapore Airlines
  • Extra baggage allowance
  • Priority check-in, boarding and luggage delivery
  • Star Alliance Gold status
  • Lounge access when flying Singapore Airlines, Virgin Australia, Virgin Atlantic, Vistara, Star Alliance airlines and Star Alliance Connecting Partner airlines

For Singapore Airlines elite members based in the U.S., one of the best features of KrisFlyer Elite Gold is that you can access United Club lounges when traveling on domestic United Airlines flights.

KrisFlyer Milestone Rewards

KrisFlyer members earn Milestone Rewards after earning a certain number of elite miles in one calendar year. However, only elite miles earned while flying Singapore Airlines or Scoot count toward Milestone Rewards.

  • 1,000 elite miles : 1,000 bonus KrisFlyer miles on your next flight with Scoot
  • 2,500 elite miles : 20% discount voucher on Scoot
  • 5,000 elite miles : 1,500 KrisPay miles (equivalent to SG$10, about $7.45).
  • 10,000 elite miles : SG$20 (about $15), KrisShop promo code valid on minimum purchase of SG$150 (about $111)
  • 20,000 elite miles : 25% bonus KrisFlyer miles for a single flight segment
  • 30,000 elite miles : 50% bonus KrisFlyer miles for a single flight segment
  • 40,000 elite miles : 5,000 KrisFlyer miles redemption discount (award flight or upgrade)
  • 60,000 elite miles : Double KrisFlyer miles (for a single flight segment)
  • 75,000 elite miles : A confirmed cabin class upgrade on an eligible Singapore Airlines short-haul flight segment
  • 100,000 elite miles : A confirmed upgrade from economy to premium economy for one Singapore Airlines segment

It's important to read the terms and conditions of these perks, as only select fare classes are eligible for some perks

singapore airlines family travel

Singapore Airlines' special elite status program, dubbed PPS Club, can only be earned by travelers who earn at least 25,000 PPS value per membership year. PPS value is earned based on your spending on Singapore Airlines, with SG$1 ($0.75) equaling 1 PPS value.

But there's a catch: You can only earn PPS value when you fly Singapore Airlines premium cabins, so economy and premium economy flights don't count. Additionally, airport taxes do not count toward PPS Club status — per the Singapore Airlines website, only the actual airfare and "applicable surcharges" count.

There's also a tier higher than PPS Club named Solitaire PPS Club, which you can obtain after earning 50,000 PPS value in a membership year.

PPS Club and Solitaire PPS Club members get a variety of extra perks. But on top of these perks, they also get PPS Rewards based on the PPS value earned during their membership year:

  • 30,000 PPS value : Earn double KrisFlyer miles on two segments.
  • 40,000 PPS value : Enjoy a 50,000-mile discount on an award flight or a redemption upgrade.
  • 60,000, 75,000 and 100,000 PPS value (for Solitaire PPS Club members) : Receive a voucher that you can use for a one-cabin confirmed upgrade on a Singapore Airlines flight of your choice.

Bottom line

KrisFlyer is the only way to redeem miles for Singapore Suites and is a great option for redeeming miles for transcontinental flights and flights to Hawaii on United Airlines and Alaska Airlines.

If you're interested in these redemptions, you can transfer rewards from multiple programs with transferable currencies to Singapore KrisFlyer.

The winner takes it all

Forget inedible meals, postage stamp-sized economy seats and sky-high fares – the airline industry has stepped up in 2023. From top-tier comfort and cleanliness to the best customer service and family-friendly facilities, we've rounded up a selection of the winners from last year's Skytrax's World Airline Awards 2023. Take a look at the airlines pulling out all the stops to make your flying experience that little bit more special.

This award analyzes an airline’s progress year-on-year, examining its change in global rating within Skytrax’s World Airline Awards program and its performance improvements in the individual award categories. Coming out on top as the Most Improved Airline for 2023, Kuwait Airways has been recognized for its customer-first approach and its commitment to service upgrades.

World’s Most Improved Airline: Kuwait Airways

From cabin crew getting swish new uniforms in 2022 to introducing a complimentary chauffeur service for first and business-class passengers, as well as goals of owning 50 aircraft by 2025, Kuwait Airways is going from strength to strength. The national carrier for the state of Kuwait currently operates flights to 60 destinations worldwide, including in Egypt, India, the UK and America.

World’s Cleanest Airline: ANA All Nippon Airways

ANA (All Nippon Airways) is one of the most consistently high-rated airlines both in Asia and worldwide. It picked up the World’s Cleanest Airline award for the third year in a row in 2023, while also holding onto its 2022 crown for the World’s Best Airport Services. Founded in 1952, Japan’s largest airline – although not the national carrier – is one of the most significant airlines in Asia, operating 43 international and  61 domestic routes.

<p>The airline focuses on an excellent in-flight experience infused with hints of Japanese culture. Running away with the Best Cabin Crew title, the national carrier for Indonesia is back on form in 2023 after winning the award for five consecutive years from 2014. Garuda Indonesia connects more than 90 destinations worldwide to its home country and the region of Southeast Asia, launching over 600 flights per day.

World’s Best Airline Cabin Crew: Garuda Indonesia

The airline prides itself on sharing Indonesia’s traditional hospitality and unique culture with its passengers. The Skytrax website rates Garuda Indonesia five stars for customer service, with reviews praising the cabin crew’s attentive, welcoming, courteous and compassionate manner.

World’s Best Economy Class: Japan Airlines

Operating almost 200 routes worldwide and serving destinations such as Tokyo, London, Paris, Melbourne, Osaka and Los Angeles, Japan’s national carrier was founded in 1951 and has been building up a significant fan base ever since. Those flying economy with Japan Airlines regularly wax lyrical about how comfortable the seats are, as well as the general smooth-running of the experience.

World’s Best Premium Economy Class: EVA Air

EVA Air's premium economy fares come with at-seat slippers, noise-canceling headphones, a water bottle, pillow and soft blanket, as well as a complimentary overnight bag. On a long-haul flight, expect the food and drink to come flying thick and fast, from congee for breakfast to snacks of cheese crackers. In mid-2024, the airline is set to update all of its Boeing 787-9s to include a premium economy class due to demand.

World's Best Regional Airline: Bangkok Airways

As well as bagging the Best Regional Airline in Asia award, Bangkok Airways took home first place for the World’s Best Regional Airline. It might not come as a surprise: it's the seventh consecutive year the airline has won both awards. It serves 11 Thai hotspots and a growing number of international destinations, including Cambodia, Singapore, the Maldives, Myanmar, Hong Kong and Laos.

The fifth-largest airline in the United States, Alaska Airlines will add its first flights to the Bahamas imminently in time for some winter sun.

Alaska Airlines has championed the use of sustainable biofuels since 2011 and was also the first airline to compost and remove single-use plastic straws and citrus picks from its planes and passenger lounges. The future is looking even more revolutionary for the region’s favorite airline, as it has just begun partnering with CLEAR to speed up and streamline its customers' passage through airport security.

World’s Best Low-Cost Airline: AirAsia

This reliable airline has been awarded the World's Best Low-Cost Airline since 2010 and is well-recognised by other industry heavyweights for its budget offerings. The Premium Flatbed seat on its Airbus A330 is considered among the world’s best-value premium cabins, being fully reclinable with adjustable head and foot rests, plus comfy bedding and a privacy screen. Complimentary meals, priority boarding and baggage collection, and access to hours of inflight entertainment are included in the cost too.

Major Airports

Russia is a large country with many airports, and three of them are located within an hour of Moscow. When you arrive, you will likely land at Sheremetyevo International Airport, Domodedovo International Airport or Vnukovo International Airport. Sheremetyevo is about 35 minutes from downtown, and you can take the city bus to town for 28 to 70 rubles. Domodedovo is about 45 minutes from the city, and you can take a train, bus, shuttle or taxi to Moscow from this location. Vnukovo is about 30 minutes southwest of the downtown area. It is the third-busiest airport in the country and handles more than 9 million passengers annually. Board the Aeroexpress Train for the fastest service into the city.

Enjoying Moscow

The weather in Moscow varies greatly by season. Summer highs can soar into the upper 90s and hit 100 degrees Fahrenheit, while winter lows fall below freezing. April and October see pleasant temperatures in the 70s and 80s, so this is a great time to visit. Even the warmest months can have chilly evenings, so bring a sweater or jacket, even in the summer. Winter travelers will need to pack a heavy coat and plenty of warm clothing. St. Basil's Cathedral is one of the city's must-see attractions. This amazing structure was built for Ivan the Terrible in the 1500s and is regarded as one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. Located in the city's center, Red Square is an ideal place to begin your exploration. From there, explore the Kremlin and other historic sights. Before you head home, stop by the Bolshoi Theatre and see the world-famous Russian ballet dancers perform.

Book Your Tickets

Save time and money with the help of Orbitz.com. You can find a wealth of information to help you plan a successful trip and cheap flights to Moscow. Moscow is an enchanting city with stunning views and breathtaking scenery. No matter when you visit, you are sure to enjoy everything this great city has to offer.

Moscow When to Go

June, July, and August are the most crowded months in Moscow, and getting into popular attractions like the Kremlin can be difficult. It’s worth braving the crowds, though, to see the golden domes, bright white bell tower, intricate Fabergé eggs, and the rest of the impressive complex. There are sure to be crowds in Red Square during the summer, too, but you can’t miss St. Basil’s fairytale-like Cathedral, Lenin’s Mausoleum, the fanciful Kazan Cathedral, and the popular, upscale GUM shopping mall. Keep an eye on the forecast. Temperatures in summer reach into the 90s and it’s the rainiest period in Moscow.

Spring is shoulder season in Moscow, as well as a pretty time to visit. The flowers around the city come into bloom. To celebrate the end of a long winter, Maslenitsa, a religious and folk holiday, ushers in the new season with pancake feasts, traditional (and friendly!) fist fighting, bonfires, and other celebrations. Temperatures warm up to the 50s and 60s during the day, so enjoy a visit to one of Moscow’s many parks; there are almost 300 square feet of parks per person here. Kolomenskoye is a nice one, with a beautiful church that dates back to 1532.

Tourists are in shorter supply during the winter due to Moscow’s notorious cold, but if you enjoy a snowy landscape, pack some warm boots and go. The Russian Winter Festival at the end of December and beginning of January is a fun way to celebrate the best of the season—troika rides, ice hockey games, snowmen, and plenty of warm tea. Especially in winter, make use of the (heated) Metro public transit. Many of the underground stations feature art, including statues, stained glass windows, mosaics, and chandeliers.
