Extreme are a metal band hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, U.S, who formed in 1985. They built a devoted fan following with their raucous mix of glam metal and funk rock, and then went stratospheric in the early 90’s, topping the Billboard charts with their power ballad “More Than Words”.
You know you’ve made it when you create a cliché, and Boston’s very own Extreme are perfect examples of this. The band had their fans back in the day, with some small radio hits and a decent selling debut album. However, might have remained nothing more than a surprisingly awesome curio had they not inadvertently perfected the longstanding tradition of hard rock bands releasing a preposterous, over the top acoustic ballad that can still get you singing along no matter what the occasion might be. Yes, they are partially responsible for “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing”, “November Rain”, and “To Be With You”, and let’s be honest, is the world not a brighter place with them in it?
Of course it is, and in a spectacular display of good things coming from insane pettiness, the band began with three different hard rock groups arguing about sharing a dressing room. Singer Gary Cherone and drummer Paul Geary both played in The Dream, guitarist Nuno Bettencourt was playing in a group called Sinful and bassist Pat Badger (not a stage name) played in “In The Pink”. These four men were the first four people in all three groups to get over themselves and struck up a friendship with each other, they started jamming together soon afterwards and decided to form a new group together.
Since Geary and Cherone both were late of the band The Dream, that obviously made the two men “Ex-Dream”, and in a stunning display of punning ability (pundamentalism? Sorry.), they named their new group Extreme as a result. The new group started writing, rehearsing and gigging soon after that, building a strong enough following around the Boston rock scene to with the “Outstanding Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Act” at the Boston Music Awards two years running before they’d even released their first album or signed to a record label. Their label deal would come in 1988 when they signed to A&M Records, and their self-titled debut album was released one year later, in1989.
All things considered it was an ideal first release, big enough to make a name for themselves, strong selling enough to secure a second album, but not so big that they had nowhere else to go but down. In hindsight, no-one at all could have predicted what happened next. Come August 1990, their second album, the preposterously titled “Extreme II: Pornograffiti” was released. Like their first effort, it sold modestly but unlike their second effort, the band had an ace up their sleeve. At first the album’s third single, “More Than Words” charted at number 81. However, then it started to climb, and climb and climb the charts until the band realized they had a bona-fide smash hit on their hands, hitting number one in June 1991.
In the dying days of hair metal, Extreme were the biggest deal of them all. They even had a second top five hit with the other acoustic ballad on their second album “Hole Hearted”, and ever since then they might not have ever been able to emulate that kind of success but then again, who has? What other rock band has had that kind of chart success ever since for that matter? The band split in 1996 but got back together in 2004, and their reunion shows have been a must see for any fan of 80’s metal. Yes it’s silly, yes it’s cheesy and yes, there are probably more tasteful ways of spending your time and money but the fact remains that no-one can deny Extreme’s charms, no matter how cool you might be. And twenty years after their heyday, they still come highly recommended.
Live reviews
Never thought I'd be able to see them live, and especially not so close to home! Still going strong in 2014 A.D., playing their repetoire as if it was still 1993. Now many of you know "More Than Words", maybe not by name, but you'd definitely recognize it if it came on the radio. Off of their second album, Pornograffitti, the rest is chockful of driving guitar riffs, memorable solos, amazing vocals, and musicianship across the board. Truly a masterpiece. The band played the entire album front to back on their last tour, and I was astounded at how tight, controlled, and energetic these guys still are. Then at the end, as a little treat, they played some fan favorites to round out the night. Seeing the opening "He-Man Woman Hater" solo played note-for-note (and I mean note-for-note) live in front of you and the dual bass/guitar 'battle' of Pat Badger and Nuno Bettencourt during "Cupid's Dead" were just two of the many highlights during the night. Gary Cherone's definitely still got those vocals, hitting some astounding highs, and Kevin Figueiredo should not be left out of the equation: he's definitely got the chops to drive things home and then some, which I was extremely pleased to find. If you even slightly remember these guys and still find yourself rocking out to old Def Leppard, Boston, or even Dokken tracks, do NOT pass them up. You might not find them together much longer. Come back to Buffalo when you can guys! It was killer!

Going to an Extreme concert is an "EXTREMEly" immense experience. Not only are you going to be listening to Extreme, but you get to watch Nuno Bettencourt shred on the guitar. The man is an incredible musician - I wish I could play half as well as that guy.
The atmosphere is always very lively. The audience is always pumped up; they dance to the music, the jump around, they sing along with Gary Cherone, etc. The band themselves don't dress extravagantly, instead opting for casual clothing. The stage set-up, like the clothes they wear, is very minimal, so as to remove all distractions from the music.
The band is present on the stage, with nothing but their equipment and various lights above them to make them visible to the audience. Now for the music itself. Extreme is a metal band. As their name suggests, they are not afraid to experiment with various subgenres; funk, glam, hard rock, heavy metal, you name it.
When the band performs "Get the Funk Out," Bettencourt starts off with a really cool solo. When the rest of the band joins in, the crowd goes nuts and screams with excitement. Watching Nuno play those solos live is reason enough to want to go see these guys live in concert. It is definitely an experience that takes you back to a time when metal music was much more popular.
This concert was amazing. I was quite surprised and happy that such a HUGE crowd showed up to support the group. Nuno never fails to delight with his incredible guitar playing. He was definitely the star of the show!!! Gary's voice was decent tonight as well. He's a great front-man. I could do without the "When I First Kissed You" song. I've hated that since the first time I heard it. It kind of put us to sleep. That was the ONLY bad part of the show...take that one out guys...it sucks. If I wanted to see Frank Sinatra...well, I never would actually.
One other thing...I really hate that people are holding up their cell phones and recording the entire show. STOP AND ENJOY THE SHOW PEOPLE!!!! It makes it hard to see over you. Kind of sad that people are doing that.
The bottom line...Extreme is AWESOME and they are DEFINITELY worth seeing live. I would go see them again and again and again.
The Band sounded amazing. The original 3 members, Gary,Nuno, and Pat were as tight as ever. The set list was so deep it was amazing that there were still like 3 songs I would have liked to hear. Crazy thing was I wanted them to do Queen's Hammer to fall, but got We are the champions so I can't really bitch there. Only thing else missing was if the boys would have done a couple of Van Halen III songs. Other then that AMAZING SHOW!! boys were dead on
Show muito bom! Nuno Bettencourt tocando muito! Vale a pena assistir... só faltou tocar a Stop the World.
Gary Cherone cantando demais também, baixo como sempre e o novo batera impressionando. A participação especial do Richie Kotzen na abertura também foi animal.

Extreme are hitting the road this summer with Living Colour. The trek kicks off on August 2 at the State Theatre in Portland, Maine and wraps up on August 29 at The Showbox in Seattle, Washington. Check out the full tour itinerary below. Venue pre-sales begin today, Wednesday, April 19, at 12pm local time HERE . General tickets and VIP Soundcheck Packages go on sale this Friday, April 21 at 10am HERE .
Additionally, the band revealed the videos for two new songs – “Banshee” and “Rebel” – which can be streamed below now.
Last month, Extreme announced SIX – their first new studio album in over a decade. The record arrives on June 9 via earMUSIC. It is the long awaited follow-up to 2008’s Saudades de Rock . The band also revealed the video for the album’s lead single “Rise” which was directed by lead guitarist Nuno Bettencourt.
“Musically, it’s aggressive,” says frontman Gary Cherone about album opener “Rise.” “Lyrically, it’s a cautionary tale on the rise and fall of fame. You get seduced into it. Once you’re on top, they’ll rip you apart and tear you down. That’s the nature of the beast.”
In addition to directing the music video for “Rise,” Bettencourt also produced the record.
“When Eddie Van Halen passed, it really hit me,” shares Nuno. “I’m not going to be the one who will take the throne, but I felt some responsibility to keep guitar playing alive. So, you hear a lot of fire on the record.”
New York City natives Living Colour released their last studio album Shade back in 2017.

EXTREME guitarist Nuno Bettencourt previously said: "We have been absolutely blown away by all of the love and support during the first leg of the 'Thicker Than Blood' tour. You all have shown up and brought it every night and we could not be more grateful."
EXTREME 's new album, "Six" , came out on June 9 via earMUSIC . "Six" landed at position No. 10 on Billboard's Top Album Sales chart with first-week sales of 12,500 copies. The set marked the band's first studio album since 2008. The act was last in the Top 10 with "III Sides To Every Story" , which debuted and peaked at No. 10 back in October 1992.
Four months ago, Nuno told Tiago Ribeiro , that he was thrilled with how "Six" turned out. "I would put our album up against anybody's album; I feel that confident," Nuno said. "And I think the album itself — never mind me or EXTREME — if I heard that album and it wasn't us, I would think the same way I think about the album now. I think it belongs there. I think it's a well-made album. I think the songs are there. I think that the musicianship, the chemistry and the guitar playing. But I think, more importantly, what's really there and what people are connecting with is the mythology of rock and roll. I think that's really what's missing a lot in guitar-driven music, is that…
"I think when people saw a guitar player that's in a band with songs and arrangements and the videos and everything, it was almost like seeing something that… People are saying it's so fresh, but for us, it's, like, this is like going back for us," he explained. "This is more of a reminder than it is anything else that you can still be passionate and have fire and do all those things. And the people are letting us know that they're starved — they're starved for rock and roll like this, I think."

EXTREME Unleashes “Banshee” and “#Rebel” Singles; Announces Dates For ‘Thicker Than Blood Tour’
Multi-platinum hard rock icons EXTREME’s latest single “Rise” has seen unprecedented success following its debut on March 1 alongside a fiery music video which has received over 2 million views to date. The critically acclaimed song, from their new album SIX out June 9th via earMUSIC , has earned praise from international top tier media outlets including Consequence, Classic Rock, Music Radar and Guitar World in addition to accolades from such fellow musical peers as Brian May and radio personality Howard Stern while peaking at #3 on the Classic Rock charts.
The band— Gary Cherone (vocals), Nuno Bettencourt, Pat Badger (bass), and Kevin Figueiredo (drums)—have today (April 19) shared two new singles along with dazzling videos to accompany each: “Banshee” and “#Rebel.”
Watch both streaming below or visit HERE for “Banshee” and HERE for “#REBEL.”
“Banshee” is a seductive classic hard rock tune with a chugging rhythm section, playful guitar wizardry and electrifying vocals that testify to the power and inspiration of the female form and spirit.” “#REBEL” takes on scathing so-called keyboard warriors with its head-nodding beat and searing dive bomb lead guitar runs catering to the harder edges of EXTREME’s sound. “We’re calling out those trolls who can’t back up their words,” explains Cherone.
EXTREME are also excited to announce they will bring SIX’s music to audiences across the globe on the “Thicker Than Blood Tour.” The tour will see the band visit North America from August 2-29 and Australia from September 6-13 where they will be joined by special guests Living Colour. EXTREME will also continue to bring the “Thicker Than Blood Tour” to audiences in Japan from September 17-26. Tickets for Japan will go on sale April 22. GA tickets and VIP upgrades–which include access to the band’s soundcheck–for the North American dates will go on sale Friday, April 21 at 10:00 A.M.local time as well as tickets for Australia.
On SIX, EXTREME swing between unapologetic fits of fret-burning hard rock and intimately introspective balladry. For the recording of the Bettencourt-produced 12-track album, the members buckled down at his home studio in Los Angeles to channel the electrifying eclecticism that defined their seminal output with a 21 st century twist.
This dynamic affirms the iconic Boston quartet as one of rock’s most unpredictable, undeniable, and unbreakable groups whose songs course through the very fabric of popular culture. They’re the rare band whose music has appeared in an actual cult series a la Bill & Ted as well as the Netflix juggernaut “Stranger Things.” They’ve sold 10 million records, topped the Billboard Hot 100 at #1, packed major venues on multiple continents, memorably performed at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in London, and regularly average over 5 million monthly listeners on Spotify. However, their dynamic approach hits harder than ever on their 2023 full-length offering, SIX.
The track listing for SIX is: 1. Rise 2. #Rebel 3. Banshee 4. Other Side of the Rainbow 5. Small Town Beautiful 6. The Mask 7. Thicker Than Blood 8. Save Me 9. Hurricane 10. X Out 11. Beautiful Girls 12. Here’s to the Losers

CONCERT REVIEW: EXTREME Live and in Your Face! Tour Opening Night at Bergen PAC, Englewood, NJ (January 24th, 2024)
Extreme laid low with a 15-year absence from releasing new music, but in 2023, they came back on the music scene with a vengeance by releasing one of the year’s best hard rock albums, “Six” .
“Six” is a worldwide success and a renewed call to arms for the band with their most prolific and influential albums. The singles “Rise,” #Rebel,” “Banshee,” and “Other Side of the Rainbow” have helped usher in a new era for the band from fretwork work, lyrical content, production, and melodic song creation, raising the bar for any rock or hard rock band planning to release an album.
Extreme spent the second half of 2023 touring the US and the world promoting “Six” . With diehard fans and new fans on board, there has never been a stronger demand to see this band live, so much so they have returned for another US tour in 2024, Tonight’s show was in Englewood, NJ, at Bergen PAC, and it’s the band’s first show of the second leg of the US tour.
Extreme rewarded the audience’s demand by rolling out “It’s a Monster” as the first song to their instantly recognizable album, “Pornograffitti” . An immediate and intimate connection between the musicians and the audience was made right from the show’s onset.
Everything you could want from an Extreme concert happened on stage tonight, starting with a setlist that toggled between songs like “Decadence Dance,” showcasing the band’s vitality, “Get the Funk Out,” demonstrated their poetic crassness, to Nuno ‘s inspiring instrumental “Midnight Express” as well as fifteen other songs that are simply testosterone saturated fury! The set also included a medley from their debut album, “ Teacher’s Pet,” “Flesh ‘n’ Blood,” “Wind Me Up,” and “Kid Ego,” which thrill diehard fans. Nuno introduced these song snippets by telling the audience, “Pornograffitti was not the band’s first album”
Before launching into some of the songs, fans were treated to the band’s fun foreplay. Prior to “Banshee,” Nuno dedicated the song to all the women at the show as the band performed the acapella intro of Queen ‘s “Fat Bottom Girls.” Later in the evening, Nuno graced us with a few bars of Van Halen ‘s “Woman in Love” while pointing to the sky to Eddie before “Small Town Beautiful!”
Mid-set, the band put the breaks on the arena rock anthems like “Play with Me” and “Cupid’s Dead” so Nuno and Gary could take center stage seated on stools to perform their biggest hit, “More Than Words.” With cell phones ignited and held high, fans swayed back to the song’s rhythmic groove while singing the song’s love-yearning lyrics.
The performance continued at a dizzying pace, as Gary is a study in perpetual motion. He fluidly glided across the stage in a form of controlled chaos, hurdling himself on and off the drum riser while posturing with half mic stand for the crowd to the effervescence of their music. No guide vocals or backing tracks are needed with this band. Gary ‘s vocals and the band’s harmonies are pure and honest.
If Nuno is the God of all things guitar, then Gary is his equal in vocals and showmanship. He is hands down the best frontman from all the existing 80s-era bands. There couldn’t be an Extreme without either of these four talented musicians.
Nuno continues to cement his guitar legacy as an innovative guitarist who revolutionizes the band’s sound. His tonal palette is expansive, colorful, and unique as he draws upon 35 years of practical experience. As he played, he assaulted his guitars in ways that most people would never think possible. It soon became apparent that his guitar was an extension of his body, and the sounds emanating from his guitar weren’t necessarily guitar sounds but harmonic textures. The lyrics to his mesmerizing solos were the passion, desire, and pain expressed on his face while he played. His playing was edgy yet tasteful. Watching him combine his signature techniques of speed, dexterity, and melody was awe-inspiring.
Kevin and Pat built the groove behind Nuno and Gary . Their intensity seemed supercharged, with Kevin taking fills and going through countless sticks as he pounded away. Pat played his bass like a lead instrument, adding the descending chord sequences to make the songs feel lofty and edgy while delivering the perfect vocal harmonies. He brings energy to the big moments and understands the sensitive ones, which is a balancing act of when to use it and when to entertain the audience.
During the final encore of “Rise,” it crystalized that there was an unbridled passion, excitement, and power when these musicians hit the stage that cannot be adequately captured on any cell phone video. Extreme are a band that must be experienced live, at the edge of the stage, and in your face! A genuine American rock act of our era!

‘Extreme surge’ of people tried buying Meijer Gardens summer concert tickets
- Published: Apr. 20, 2024, 11:34 a.m.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is asking for patience after experiencing a “high volume of traffic” for its summer concert tickets sales.
Tickets for the popular concert series went on sale Saturday at 9 a.m. for members only.
But within an hour, Meijer Gardens said the website was overwhelmed by “an extreme surge in demand of non members” trying to buy tickets. Some people aired their frustrations Saturday morning on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying the website crashed or they were stuck in a waiting room for an hour . One user called it a “ disastrous day ” for buying tickets.

Meijer Gardens said in an update on Facebook that AXS is resolving the issues.
“We worked with our partners at AXS to relaunch, and tickets are flowing for members only. If you are currently in the waiting room you will receive a new link to purchase tickets,” Meijer Gardens said.

The updated process only allows people to buy tickets for one concert at a time. There is a limit of six tickets per show.
Meijer Gardens is hosting 33 concerts this summer at its outdoor amphitheater with in-demand artists being Boyz II Men, Bonnie Raitt with James Hunter, Jason Mraz and O.A.R. Last year, two-thirds of the 30 concerts sold out on the first day of members-only ticket sales.
The general public can purchase tickets on Saturday, April 27 at 9 a.m.
Tickets will be available at AXS.com . On top of the ticket prices, which vary per performer, a $10 per ticket fee and a 3% credit card fee is added per order. After purchase, tickets can be managed via the AXS mobile app. There will be a $15 processing fee for those who want their tickets mailed to them and a $6 processing fee for those who choose Will Call as their delivery method.
