Cruises to Indonesia

With over 17,000 islands that cover nearly 750,000 square miles of land and sea, Indonesia is  one of the largest countries in the world. It’s also one of the most ancient and culturally rich places on earth, with a deep history of spice trading, European influence, and intertwining religious backgrounds.

On Indonesia cruises, you’ll uncover this country’s wild, elemental natural beauty, from volcanoes and jungles in Celukan Bawang to secluded surf spots in Lombok. Get your adrenaline going on a jet ski tour around the beaches of Benoa, or try fresh vegetable curries as you sip on cool coconut milk after a yoga class in Ubud. You’ll experience the best of Bali, Lombok, and their surrounding islands on a cruise to Indonesia with Celebrity.

Indonesia Cruise Highlights

Blissful bali.

Cruises to Indonesia will bring you to the world-famous island of Bali, where a boho vibe, exciting cuisine, and unspoiled beaches await. Bask in the sun on the bright white sands of Gunung Payung Beach, or head to artsy Ubud for an afternoon of yoga or a traditional dance class to rejuvenate your spirits. Relax with a fresh acai bowl or tropical blended cocktail as you overlook the palm-fringed sands of Nusa Dua and soak in this magical island’s blissful energy before heading back to the ship.

Endless Natural Beauty

Indonesia is full of natural beauty, unique biospheres, and some of the most sought-after beaches on earth. On cruises to Indonesia you’ll have the opportunity to trek to volcanic crater lakes, ride scenic boats through mangroves, surf and snorkel at tucked away jungle beaches, and much more. From casual birdwatching to adrenaline-boosting ATV safari tours, you’ll find endless opportunities to explore the natural world on a cruise to Indonesia.

Cross-Cultural Experiences

Indonesia is a country of contrasts in every way, and one of the biggest highlights of visiting is experiencing an array of harmonious, intertwining local cultures. Each port has its own traditions when it comes to food, art, architecture, dialect, and religion. This diverse cultural blend allows you to immerse yourself in a world of temples, shrines, ancient healing practices, local art, and island cuisine. Discover new perspectives, make everlasting memories, and gain a fresh understanding of how harmonious and welcoming this diverse island culture can be.

Indonesia Cruise Ports

Celukan bawang.

Celukan Bawang lies on the northern coast of Bali, fringed by dense tropical jungles to the south and the beautiful Bali sea to the north. Here you’ll enjoy the quieter, less developed side of the island. Visit Segara Karang Rata, a coastal wildlife preserve that hugs the sea, or Lovina Beach, where you may spot dolphins. Journey out to a tropical plantation to try the famous Kopi Luwak, an unusual and prized coffee. Step into the Brahmavihara-Arama Buddhist Temple, Bali’s largest Buddhist monastery, and join a meditation class.

Lombok is the perfect compliment to Bali, just across a narrow strait but different in both culture and faith. While in Lombok, explore the village of Kuta, where you’ll find small restaurants with fantastic local seafood curries, an uncrowded beach, and nearby nature escapes that are easy to access by taxi or tuk-tuk. Thrill-seekers can trek on the slopes of the towering volcano, Mount Rinjani, or for a more relaxed experience, you could take a guided jeep tour around the blue-green caldera lake, Segara Anak.

The port of Benoa is the main southern gateway to Bali for cruise ships, and a short distance from the island’s principal city, Denpasar. Take a day trip to artsy Ubud for colorful café scenes, yoga, artisan gift shopping, and a deliciously healthy acai bowl to feed the soul. Enjoy thrilling water sports like kitesurfing, wakeboarding, and jet skiing on Tanjung Benoa Beach. Visit the Pura Dalem Ning Lan Taman Beji temple site to reflect on the island’s intricate and harmonic blend of both Buddhist and Hindu traditions, where three majestic gates made of white-hued sandstone greet worshippers and visitors.

Indonesia Cruise Itineraries

Cruises to Indonesia cover a wide range of ports and countries in the region. They typically sail for about 11 to 15 nights, and include between three and eight days at sea, depending on your itinerary. Options include voyages between Bali and Singapore, or Sydney and Singapore, with some cruises overnighting in Benoa. Most set sail between October and March, at varying times throughout the week.

Itineraries

Why cruise to indonesia with celebrity cruises.

From idyllic tropical island retreats to palm-fringed white sand beaches, cruises to Indonesia offer a wonderful taste of some of the best that Asia has to offer. You’ll sail on the revolutionized Celebrity Millennium, the modern and stylish Celebrity Edge, or the elegant and exciting Celebrity Solstice.

Enjoy world-class dining with exclusive service offerings on each ship as you sail to Indonesia and throughout the region. Treat yourself to rejuvenating spa treatments, or spend sea days relaxing by the sparkling pool. Step out over the sea on the one-of-a-kind Magic Carpet, the world’s first cantilevered platform that floats over the ocean on Celebrity Edge. No matter which itinerary you choose, you’ll enjoy impeccable service, thrilling port destinations, and elegant accommodation with Celebrity.

SINGAPORE: Holidaymakers will soon be able to go on cruises from Singapore to Indonesia.

From Jul 1, Genting Dream under Resorts World Cruises will set sail on two-night trips to Bintan and Batam, with the ship departing on Fridays, the company said in a media release on Tuesday (Jun 7).

The cruise ship will also do three-night trips from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur and Melaka via Port Dickson and to Penang from Jul 3. It will also do two-night trips to Kuala Lumpur and Melaka.

“Resorts World Cruises will be the first cruise line from Singapore to resume cruising to Indonesia with the two-night Bintan and Batam weekend getaway cruise starting Jul 1, 2022,” said Mr Michael Goh, president of Resorts World Cruises.

“We will continue to include more popular destinations to Phuket and Krabi in Thailand and North Bali in Indonesia from October 2022 onwards to provide our vacationers with more destination options,” he added.

“We would also like to thank the Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand governments for their ongoing support in launching destination cruises with Resorts World Cruises.”

Indonesia's Tourism Minister Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno said that the country is “looking forward” to welcoming Resorts World Cruises and the Genting Dream.

“With Resorts World Cruises taking on a pioneering role to restart destination cruises in Indonesia, we are confident that together, we will rejuvenate the regional cruise tourism industry,” he added.

Singapore Tourism Board's (STB) director of cruise Annie Chang said: “This strengthens Singapore’s cruise offerings, giving even more options for domestic and international cruisers.

“STB will continue to work closely with our regional counterparts to reopen more ports and reinvigorate the cruise industry in Southeast Asia."

Genting Dream, which used to be operated by Genting Hong Kong-owned Dream Cruises, will start trips from Singapore on Jun 15 after it was taken over by Resorts World Cruises .

Resorts World Cruises is a new company set up by Malaysian tycoon Lim Kok Thay, who is chairman and board executive of Genting Group. It was registered on Mar 9, less than two months after Genting Hong Kong filed to wind up the company after  failing to secure funding to pay its debts .

Singapore to Indonesia by ferry: A list of every port and ferry operator

June 16, 2024 By James Clark 4 Comments

Singapore to Indonesia by ferry

A guide to every ferry service between Singapore and Indonesia, including how to connect to other ferry services in Indonesia.

Singapore and Indonesia are close maritime neighbours separated by the Singapore Strait. The two countries are just over 5 km apart at their closest point, and the fastest ferry services take a little under an hour.

There are numerous daily ferry services from Singapore to Batam, Bintan, and Karimun Besar. Batam is a manufacturing and financial hub, and Bintan is a popular resort destination for Singaporeans looking for a beach break without flying.

Getting the ferry to Indonesia is also a crucial link for overlanders travelling from Mainland Southeast Asia to Maritime Southeast Asia.

Ports referenced in this guide are shown on this map.

Singapore – Batam

HarbourFront Passenger Terminal is the main port for cruises and ferries in Singapore. This is the most useful port for Batam if you are staying in Central Singapore. The terminal is connected to the Harbourfront MRT, so it’s easy to get to by public transport.

Ferries from Tanah Merah to Batam are useful if you are based in the east of Singapore or if you are coming directly from Changi Airport.

When booking a ferry to Batam, make sure you know what port you want to go to. There are five ports in Batam that receive ferries from Singapore. This list gives a brief description of each port to help decide which port to go to.

There is no direct ferry service from Singapore to Jakarta, but there is a Pelni ferry from Batam to Jakarta. With some preplanning you can go from Singapore to Batam to Jakarta by ferry.

Pelni is the national cargo and passenger shipping company of Indonesia. Pelni ship KM.KELUD departs Batam on Wednesdays at 16:00 and arrives at Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta the next day at 22:00 (1 day and 6 hours travel time). Check with the website to confirm if the ship is sailing or if there are other days added.

I did a test booking in English and I could find economy and cabin tickets. There is also a Pelni office in Batam if the website isn’t accepting your payment.

Pelni booking site showing class options for Batam - Jakarta ferry

The return leg comes back to Batam and continues to Belawan Port in Medan (North Sumatra).

Google Maps is showing Sekupang as the port for the ferry to Tanjung Priok, but the ferry departs from Batu Ampar. The closest port to Batu Ampar is Harbour Bay, so you will need to get a taxi between ports.

Here is a trip report of an overlander who went economy in a bunk bed , and here is a trip report in a private cabin .

Check ferry times

All ferry times are on the Singapore Cruise Centre website (the ferry terminal operator of Singapore). Keep track of ferry departure and arrival with live updates.

Check schedule for Ferries .

How to buy ferry tickets

Ferry tickets can be bought online or at the ferry terminal. Every ferry operator has their own sales counter, so you need to know which ferry operator and port you are going to.

The first time I went to Batam I didn’t know where to go, so I picked Batam Centre because of its name. This port is further away from the Nagoya area, though taxis are not too expensive.

On my next trip to Batam I went to Harbour Bay, and the ticket agent asked if I was sure I wanted to go to Harbour Bay.

Ticket counter for Horizon Fast Ferry at HarbourFront Singapore

I travelled midweek during the day, so there was no problem to turn up and book a seat. I would have booked in advance if it was the weekend or closer to peak hour travel.

Seats on Horizon Fast Ferry

Another thing to consider is that I couldn’t use my Visa or Mastercard (they wanted a local NET card ). I had already spent my Singapore Dollars so I had to go to an ATM (and incur a withdrawal fee) to pay for the ticket in cash. If I had of known this I would have booked online.

I have listed all the ferry websites where you can book directly, and you can also compare tickets with 12Go . Search in SGD to compare prices.

I was surprised with how expensive the tickets were considering how many ferry operators there are. It turns out that the ferry operators have a history of anti-competitive behavior , and they are once again being called out for possible price-fixing .

Hi James, Nice roundup, but I think you’ve mistaken one Tanjung Balai for another. From S’pore one can take a ferry to Tanjung Balai on Karimun island, just west of Batam, not to the one near Medan. There may be ferries from Batam to Dumai, South Sumatra. Apparently Karimun is a bit of a low-end holiday island, but I’ve never been there myself. Tanjung Pinang is ok, and a useful starting point for island hopping around Riau. Happy travels! Serge

As a resident of Singapore, I’m super grateful to you for putting this list together! Many thanks! The only ferry I took so far was from Tanah Merah to Bintan 🙂

Disney Adventure cruise ship will set sail from Singapore in 2025 with seven themed areas inspired by Toy Story and The Avengers

This is the cruise line’s very first Southeast Asian homeport since its maiden voyage in 1998

Xiao Qing Wan

Last year, the Singapore Tourism Board and Disney Cruise Line announced that the Disney Adventure cruise ship will establish a homeport in Singapore, making it the first in Southeast Asia since its first voyage in 1998. The ship will set sail from the Marina Bay Cruise Centre in 2025, and is expected to host about 6,700 passengers and 2,500 crew members.

There will be seven themed areas on the ship, with the standout being the Disney Imagination Garden, an outdoor space inspired by the illustrious history of Disney adventures, featuring a gorgeous garden and an open-air performance space. Other themed areas include a water playland inspired by the iconic Toy Story series and a shopping area modelled after Big Hero 6 ’s San Fransokyo.

Disney Cruise Line

Look forward to seeing your favourite Disney characters like Mickey Mouse, Rapunzel from Tangled , and even Marvel superheroes around the ship. Don’t forget to take pictures with Captain America (just to be clear, not Chris Evans), or challenge Thor to an arm-wrestling competition if you see them!

The Disney Adventure cruise ship will also offer a wide variety of entertainment venues including nightclubs, live music lounges, and karaoke rooms. Take a break from the children by pampering yourself at the spa and salon, or make your way to the gym to stay in shape during the three-night-four-day voyage.

The Disney Cruise Line has yet to announce exactly when it will set sail and how much the voyage will cost, so stay tuned to its official Instagram page for more information.

World Bank country classifications by income level for 2024-2025

Eric metreau, kathryn elizabeth young, shwetha grace eapen.

The World Bank Group assigns the world’s economies [1]  to four income groups: low, lower-middle, upper-middle, and high. The classifications are updated each year on July 1, based on the GNI per capita of the previous calendar year. GNI measures are expressed in United States dollars [2]  using conversion factors derived according to the  Atlas method , which in its current form was introduced in 1989 [3] . The World Bank’s income classification aims to reflect a country’s level of development, drawing on  Atlas GNI per capita  as a broadly available indicator of economic capacity. The classification of countries into income categories has evolved significantly over the period since the late 1980s. In 1987, 30% of reporting countries were classified as low-income and 25% as high-income countries. Jumping to 2023, these overall ratios have shifted down to 12% in the low-income category and up to 40% in the high-income category.  The scale and direction of these shifts, however, varies a great deal between world regions. Here are some regional highlights:

  • 100% of South Asian countries were classified as low-income countries in 1987, whereas this share has fallen to just 13% in 2023.
  • In the Middle East and North Africa there is a higher share of low-income countries in 2023 (10%) than in 1987, when no countries were classified to this category.
  • In Latin America and the Caribbean , the share of high-income countries has climbed from 9% in 1987 to 44% in 2023.
  • Europe and Central Asia has a slightly lower share of high-income countries in 2023 (69%) than it did in 1987 (71%).

These changing compositions are depicted visually in the diagram below, which shows country classifications by region and over time since 1987.

Classification changes

The updated country income classifications for FY25, based on the GNI per capita of 2023, are available  here .

From a statistical perspective, classifications can change for two reasons:

  • Changes to Atlas GNI per capita : In each country, factors such as economic growth, inflation, exchange rates, and population growth can all influence the level of Atlas GNI per capita. Revisions to improve methods and data can also have an impact. Updated data on Atlas GNI per capita for 2023 can be accessed  here .
  • Changes to classification thresholds : To keep income classification thresholds fixed in real terms, they are adjusted annually for inflation using the  Special Drawing Rights (SDR) deflator , a weighted average of the GDP deflators of China, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Euro Area. The new thresholds for Atlas GNI per capita (in US$) are as follows:

Image

The chart below shows the economies moving to new income categories this year:

This year, three countries—Bulgaria, Palau, and Russia—moved from the upper-middle-income to the high-income category:

  • Bulgaria  has been steadily approaching the high-income threshold with modest growth throughout the post-pandemic recovery period, which continued in 2023 as real GDP grew 1.8%, supported by consumption demand.
  • Palau  also continued its post-pandemic recovery as GDP returned to previous levels, growing by 0.4% in real terms. With inflation (as measured by the GDP deflator) at 8.1%, nominal GNI increased 10.0%.
  • Economic activity in  Russia  was influenced by a large increase in military related activity in 2023, while growth was also boosted by a rebound in trade (+6.8%), the financial sector (+8.7%), and construction (+6.6%). These factors led to increases in both real (3.6%) and nominal (10.9%) GDP, and Russia’s Atlas GNI per capita grew by 11.2%.

Algeria, Iran, Mongolia, and Ukraine all moved up from the lower-middle-income to the upper-middle-income category this year:

  • While the  Algeria n economy grew 4.1% in 2023, the main reason for the upward reclassification was a comprehensive revision to national accounts statistics undertaken by the Algerian authorities (Office National des Statistiques) to align with current international standards. This realignment resulted in an upward revision to the level of GDP (on average 13.3% higher over the 2018-2022 period) due, for example, to the expansion of investment estimates to include research and development, improved methods for measuring production in public administration, and improved coverage of the non-observed economy.
  • Iran ’s economy grew 5.0% in 2023, driven mainly by oil exports and supported by gains in services and manufacturing. GNI jumped 39.5% in nominal terms which, combined with the depreciation of the Iranian rial, resulted in a 17.6% increase of the Atlas GNI per capita.
  • Mongolia  continued its recovery after the pandemic, with real GDP increasing 7.0% in 2023. Growth was driven by expansions in mining of 23.4%, along with higher export prices which boosted exports by 53.4%.
  • Ukraine ’s upward change in classification resulted from a resumption of economic growth in 2023 (real GDP grew 5.3%, following a drop of 28.8% in 2022) along with a continued decline in population, which has fallen more than 15% since the invasion from Russia began. These factors were further amplified by price increases of domestically produced goods and services to result in a large increase in nominal Atlas GNI per capita of 18.5%. While Ukraine’s economy was significantly impaired by Russia’s invasion, real growth in 2023 was driven by construction activity (24.6%), reflecting a sizable increase in investment spending (52.9%) supporting Ukraine’s reconstruction effort in the wake of ongoing destruction.

West Bank and Gaza was the only country whose classification moved downward this year. The conflict in the Middle East began in October 2023, and while the impact on West Bank and Gaza was limited to the fourth quarter, its scale was nonetheless sufficient to lead to a 9.2% drop in nominal GDP (-5.5% in real terms). Since West Bank and Gaza’s economy was close to the threshold (it entered the upper-middle-income category only last year), these declines brought Atlas GNI per capita back down to the lower-middle-income category.

More information

Detailed information on how the World Bank Group classifies countries is available  here . The  country and lending groups  page provides a complete list of economies classified by income, region, and World Bank lending status and includes links to prior years’ classifications. The classification tables include World Bank member countries, along with all other economies with populations greater than 30,000. These classifications reflect the best available GNI figures for 2023, which may be revised as countries publish improved final estimates. Data for  GNI ,  GNI per capita ,  GDP ,  GDP PPP , and  Population  for 2023 are now available on the World Bank's Open Data Catalog. Note that these are estimates and may be revised. For more information, please contact us at  [email protected] .

[1]  The term country, used interchangeably with economy, does not imply political independence but refers to any territory for which authorities report separate social or economic statistics. [2]  In countries where dual or multiple exchange rates are in use, the exchange rate used to convert local currency units to US$ is an average of these exchange rates, provided necessary data are available. [3]  For data beginning in reference year 1987. The authors are pleased to acknowledge the essential contributions of our colleagues,  Charles Kouame , and  Tamirat Yacob to the preparation of this piece. Please note: The country classification described here aims to serve analytical purposes and changes have no direct impact on the eligibility for World Bank resources. In the classification used for World Bank operational purposes, a range of additional criteria are considered to determine country eligibility and the terms and conditions of Bank financing.
