Road trips always start out entertaining; everyone is either buzzing with the excitement of the journey or stressing over how much they packed and if they are prepared. Soon enough, though, there comes a point on every trip where the monotony starts to set in and you need a little entertainment.

Luckily for you, video games became portable over twenty years ago and have only gotten better since then. That means they can be played on the go, and more importantly, they can be played on road trips, making that monotonous journey a little easier to deal with. Just don't play any video games if you're the one driving, the road should be more than enough to keep you occupied.

Instead, Mario Odyssey provides a world as open as the roads you are traveling on. And, as with any Mario game, there are levels that suit all abilities, so if you need to keep younger siblings or children entertained, then this is the perfect game to occupy them too.

There are dozens of side quests you probably never bothered to finish in your playthrough that you might want to revisit now, not to mention all three DLCs. Plus, the Special Edition of the game added a new survival mode, which players have praised as being a more immersive, interesting role-playing experience.

The game's story is significant, so you'll be able to sink plenty of hours in there, but if you've already beaten the story, then the endgame is equally engaging! There are hundreds of Pokemon to collect across the region, after all !

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes

  • Choose a house and fight for its cause, with different paths and challenges on each playthrough
  • Build relationships with your allies through camp activities and unlock special bonuses
  • The core gameplay loop of conquering enemy hordes can feel repetitive over time

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes is a new title; it's a narrative and gameplay spin on the latest mainline installment, Fire Emblem: Three Houses . The Warriors franchise focuses on strategic combat and exciting action.

This game, like Three Houses, allows you to pick a story and stick with it. There are three main routes to take through the game , meaning there are three stories to complete and three houses full of characters you'll get to know. Whether you're new to the game or want to return to it and sink your teeth into a new storyline, this game is a great choice for a long trip.

Mario Strikers: Battle League

Chaotic Soccer Fun

Mario Strikers is a chaotic 5v5 battle where anything goes. Tackle friends, use items like shells, and unleash powerful shots to score. Customize your favorite characters and team up online to dominate the competition!

  • Simple to learn but difficult to master with strategic elements like timing and character stats
  • Supports online play with ranked leaderboards and clubs for long-term competition
  • Lacks features like a story mode or more characters compared to previous games

Soccer (or football) is a beloved summertime sport, and no one could complain about starting a game or two on a road trip! The recently-released Mario Strikers: Battle League game is a way to get that experience on the go - with a few exciting, super-powered additions.

Up to eight people can play a game together, which means that you won't have to leave anyone on the trip out (except the driver, if you play in the car)!

A Purrfect Adventure

Control a stray cat in a neon-lit cyberpunk world. Explore high and low, solve puzzles, and be mischievous with the robots you meet. Unravel the city's secrets in this unique cat adventure.

  • Seeing the world from a cat's viewpoint is a refreshing change and leads to some creative gameplay moments
  • The cyberpunk city is beautifully designed and full of interesting details to discover.
  • The story is surprisingly well-told, with a good balance of action, puzzles, and exploration
  • The controls can feel a bit clunky at times, especially when platforming

Stray isn't your typical video game protagonist. You don't wield a sword or cast spells; you're a ginger tabby cat separated from your family and dropped into a decaying cyberpunk city. This might sound silly on the surface, but Stray uses this unique perspective to craft a compelling and heartwarming adventure.

The world feels massive from a cat's viewpoint. You can scamper up air conditioners, squeeze through tight spaces, and knock things off shelves with a satisfying clatter.

These playful actions occasionally become essential tools, like scratching at a door to get someone's attention or batting an object to distract an enemy. The city itself is a marvel, a neon-soaked labyrinth filled with hidden nooks and crannies to explore. Each area is densely packed with details, hinting at the history of this once-thriving metropolis and the robots that now inhabit it.

The game seamlessly blends platforming, puzzles, and exploration. You'll navigate rooftops, jump across precarious ledges, and solve environmental puzzles using your feline agility. While the platforming can feel a bit clunky at times, the constantly evolving environments and fresh ideas keep things interesting.

The Perfect Roadtrip Game

I've played a few games about roadtrips recently. It wasn't intentional, though I do love the idea of games about journeys, they all just happened to land in my lap at the same time. First up was Overland , a turn-based tactical post-apocalyptic game about travelling across a bug-infested America. Then there was The Crew , in which I competed with Brendan in a race . That also took me across the US. If you'd rather escape the US, check out the excellent Death Road to Canada , which is funny, short and sweet...with lots of guts and headshots.

And there's Jalopy , a game about car maintenance and travelling across the former Eastern bloc. Finally, I spun the Wheels of Aurelia , the most interesting of the three in many ways. That's a game about the conversations you have with people as you drive, rather than the driving itself.

Three very different takes on what is a similar starting point. You're in a car and you need to get from A to B. What makes that different from an actual racing game is the stops you make along the way, for one thing. A roadtrip tends not to be one continuous forward motion, but a series of starts and stops, and diversions.

The shadow of Euro Truck Simulator and its Americanised cousin will hang over every driving game, and playing these four recently I decided to draw up a list of features that I hoped to see in the perfect roadtrip sim.

road trip game for pc

I want to take along food and drinks, maybe even boardgames and other entertainments. Ideally, I should be able to stock up along the way, stopping at service stations and the like.

Gotta get your head down when you're driving long distances. Sure, I want to have a backseat I can bed down on if need be, maybe even a mobile home to decorate, but I'd love to be able to walk around motels and pick a room as well.

Destinations

The road is all well and good, but I don't want to be travelling forever. The Crew is very good at destinations – its cities might not be to scale, but they're large enough to have recognisable districts and landmarks. It's the area where the Truck Simulator games are weakest, the lack of urban sprawl, but that's because those are games about the in-between that treat cities as little more than depots. But in the ideal roadtrip game I'll be able to walk around a city, go to a bar, visit a museum or park. All that good stuff.

People like achievements, right? Souvenirs are a kind of achievement – a memory of a task accomplished. In this case, you'd be taking photos or buying some local piece of tat to commemorate your visits.

Travelling alone can be fantastic but if I want friends along on my roadtrip, I should be able to invite them or collect them along the way. Interaction doesn't need to be complex – Death Road to Canada's simple system or traits and perks is enough for me to get a handle on characters given the nifty pixel art – but there should be at least some kind of conversation system to break up the hours on the open road.

If you run out of fuel, the whole thing becomes a horror game

If you're in a city and the tank runs dry, fine, you can sort something out I'm sure. But if you're on the backroads, at night, in a storm? You better believe the whole thing suddenly transforms into The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Enjoy!

Games Are Reimagining the Road Trip for a Modern Era

Screenshot of Road 96

Road 96 promises the thrill of the open road and the unexpected. Maybe freedom. Maybe death. Plenty in between. The walking, driving, and hitchhiking adventure from French studio DigixArt, coming later this year, taps into the spirit of classic road movies, from Easy Rider to Thelma and Louise , where encounters with the outside world are strange, life-changing, and potentially fatal.

“The road trip structure was the perfect canvas for us to feel the random nature of traveling on your own,” says Yoan Fanise, Road 96’s creative director. “When you travel as a backpacker you don’t know who you're going to meet, what’s going to happen, good or bad. That’s the essence of a road trip, and of life.”

This confrontation with the unknown is just one way that games are proving to be ideal hosts for the road trip genre. What unites road movies and novels, serious or comic, is how they bring the social background into focus, shining a light on cultural tensions and marginalization, all while their characters reconnect with each other, and themselves. A recent crop of road games are doing all this in a way that feels especially pertinent to our times.

Road 96 isn’t just about adventure. Set in a dystopian land that blends ’90s Arizona with Soviet totalitarianism, you play a teenager fleeing to the border, by any means available. Fanise explains that the political aspects of the game have only become more relevant during development. “We started writing this story three years ago,” he says, “mostly inspired by 1989 iron curtain history and the struggles of countries like Venezuela or North Korea. But recently we were shocked by the similarity of real events that happened in ‘modern democracies’ such as the USA.”

Screenshot of Road 96

As in many road trip stories, the freedom of travel clashes against conservative values and laws. But there are also hints of resistance and change, as you make decisions to help yourself and potentially affect the wider political situation. The game’s procedurally generated encounters should be crucial here, as each restart produces random combinations of Road 96 ’s characters, including a cop, a truck driver, and a pair of clownish robbers.

“This is the biggest innovation for a narrative game,” says Fanise. “We developers don’t know, even from the start, which character and sequence you're going to get.” The flow of the game, he explains, alternates between open exploration and vehicle journeys where relationships develop. “This creates a very nice rhythm and enables deeper discussions about the state, the politics, and the intertwined stories of the eight main characters,” he says. Who you decide to travel with and how you bond with them should lead to highly varied perspectives and outcomes.

Road 96 isn’t the only game to link road trips to procedural generation. In 2019’s Overland , you drive across an American wasteland overrun by alien predators, and turn-based supply runs on random maps serve familiar road trip themes. Indeed, explains Adam Saltsman, cofounder of Overland developer Finji, one inspiration for the game was real-life road trips. “We traveled by highway a pretty fair amount growing up, and got to visit a lot of weird places in the US,” he tells us. “Bekah [Rebekah Saltsman, Finji’s other cofounder] and I especially, as kids growing up in the Midwest, drove through a lot of weird or boring or abandoned or changing places every summer.”

Saltsman sees Overland as an “amped-up” version of these journeys, with their sense of urgency and potential for unexpected events. “There’s already kind of an adventurous core to the idea of going on a road trip,” he says. “But all the real parts of the road trip have higher stakes, and stranger outcomes, and bigger surprises.” The procedural element makes each trip unique, just like traveling to different places, with different people.

Screenshot of Overland

And as with many a road trip story, Overland is really about personal relationships, in this case among randomized strangers who have to share a car and collaborate to survive. “ Overland ended up being a game about taking care of strangers,” says Saltsman. With minimal dialog and plot, these connections develop through grid-based tactics, focusing on mutual consideration rather than combat. “I’m still surprised as a designer how powerful the act of nurturing is,” he adds. “We worked a lot on helping players bond with the party members and the vehicle through different features. But including nurturing verbs like Heal, Repair, and Upgrade, when you’re starting with a vulnerable origin, I think that is interesting.”

This notion of bonding with your vehicle as well as people highlights another important aspect of road trips—the role of the mode of transport itself. In films like Easy Rider or Vanishing Point, it represents freedom from social rules. In Overland , your very ordinary and vulnerable car is more a refuge. The last fragile remnant of the old world in a terrible new reality.

It’s a point that links Overland to a very different journey, Just Add Oil’s Road to Guangdong . This is the tale of Sunny, a young woman who inherits her family restaurant after the death of her parents, and travels with her Guu Ma (eldest aunt) to visit relatives across the province and obtain their blessings. “The road trip in the game is how the protagonist, Sunny, connects and reconnects with her family,” explains author Yen Ooi, writer of Road to Guangdong . Ooi cites the great classic 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West as an inspiration for the story’s tone. “We wanted Road to Guangdong to have the traveling-buddy feel,” she says.

Screenshot of Road to Guangdong

So nothing like Overland . Except one key aspect of Road to Guangdong is how you travel, in a rusty jalopy named Sandy, which you both drive and maintain with fuel and parts. “Sunny sees Sandy—her father’s old car—as her connection to her parents,” says Ooi, “to her childhood, and to visiting families. Sandy carries nostalgia and reassurance in a time of turmoil for Sunny, while being the unspeaking member of their family.” The last fragile remnant of the old world in a terrible new reality.

Equally important to Road to Guangdong’s themes are the narrative choices you make, which ask you to consider what others want or expect. “Life, family and the way we experience and manage our relationships are not clearly distributed to right and wrong answers,” says Ooi. “The choices we present in the game are more aligned to ethical and moral considerations, taking into account the background of the characters and the story that is presented.” Like caring for Sandy, these choices are a means of reconnecting with those around us.

This tension between alienation and human connection is also at the heart of gaming’s most enduring road trip of recent times. Kentucky Route Zero , released in five acts over seven years, is most striking for its uncanny rendering of a crumbling modern America, and its disenfranchised citizens. The game’s creators, Jake Elliott, Tamas Kemenczy and Ben Babbitt of Cardboard Computer, see the 1980s film True Stories as one inspiration, for its slow pace and shots lingering on background details that highlight the strangeness of the everyday. “Those are important moments in a road trip,” they say, “stopping somewhere for a moment to check the map, and seeing something weird.”

But Kentucky Route Zero explores both this social disconnect and our desire for company and community, using limited forms of interaction, not least when driving. “We were trying to give the player a sense of being lost on the road,” Elliott, Kemenczy, and Babbitt explain in a group interview by email. “You're working with a map directly, which should make it easy to find things, but then you have to follow directions given by people you meet.” In the game’s fourth act, you board a steam boat, and the developers explain that this switch, along with the game’s dialog options, highlight another crucial aspect of a road trip–being a passenger. “If nothing else, the driver needs someone to keep them awake,” they say. “That's what dialog choices are for, whether you think of the player as driver or passenger.”

Kentucky Route Zero thus reflects genuine social decline. “A lot of the social crises reflected in the game have been happening for a long time; call them patterns, strategies, or chronic symptoms,” say Elliott, Kemenczy, and Babbitt. But in the final episode your band of misfit travelers forms a kind of family of their own, and finds a haven where they might start afresh. If real “chronic symptoms” are the root of road trip fiction, so is the hope of moving beyond them.

It’s the same even in the post-apocalyptic Overland . In some ways its world resembles a reality in which towns are already overgrown and abandoned. “Places where I grew up are in internet ‘abandoned building porn’ slideshows,” says Saltsman. Yet even in a road trip to oblivion, there’s the hint of new beginnings. “I subscribe strongly to Ursula Le Guin’s idea that dystopias and utopias are intimately coupled,” he says. “That utopias for some are dystopias for others, and vice versa.”

Similarly for Fanise, road trips are about surviving a hostile society, but also forging relationships within it. Being on the road drags you out of your comfort zone, he explains, forcing you to meet people you would have never met. “By doing that you realize that all the fears of the others we have in our modern societies are biased,” he adds, “based on the tiny percent of worst things we see on the news, on the internet.”

In that sense, games are the medium we need for the modern road trip, planting seeds within our digital bubbles that encourage us to embrace the unknown, and link with those both near and far away. “Road trips are journeys that expand our experiences of society around us,” says Ooi. “This encourages us to be more open, more tolerant, and can prepare us to be more able and willing to learn about new and/or different cultures, social settings and communities.”

16 Road Trip Games for Adults That Are Actually Fun

T he summer season is one of the very best for traveling across the country or taking an epic West Coast road trip . But after a few hours of blasting your passenger's favorite playlist, cruising with the windows down or indulging in some homemade road trip snacks , boredom will inevitably kick in.

Here's what to do when you can't take another hour in the car!

20 Questions

Long road trips are a perfect time to find out how well you actually know your road trip passengers. During this game of 20 Questions, one of the players must choose a fellow passenger (or a celebrity!) without revealing their identity. The other players can only ask up to 20 questions to figure out who the secret person is. The questions can range from easy to obscure, like what their favorite frozen summer treat is.

In this road trip game that's catered toward more creative personalities, passengers can kill time by making up their very own story. One person starts off by saying a word that begins a story, and the rest of the group must take turns tacking on just one more word to complete the sentences. It's hilarious to see how the story ends!

Name the Song

Chances are, music buffs will have their favorite old-school songs blasting during road trips. To play Name the Song, one passenger has to simply say a song lyric aloud while the others have to try and guess what song it is. In another version of the game, one passenger can play just a snippet of a song—and the rest of the group is left to figure out what song it is, and which artist sings it.

Going on a Picnic

If you have a bad memory, you probably won't do so well during a round of Going on a Picnic. The first person must begin the game by saying the phrase, "I'm going on a picnic and I'm bringing..." Then, they end the sentence by stating what delicious food item they'll be packing in their metaphorical picnic basket . The following players must re-state the entire phrase, remembering which item the person before them is bringing and adding something else to go along with it. Whoever gets it wrong must sit out the next round.

The License Plate Game

The License Plate Game is a true road trip classic—and it's really great for those who are traveling across the country. All players must write down every license plate they see from a different state on a piece of paper, and the person that has the most at the end of the car ride wins. Crank the game up a notch by awarding extra points to the players who can name the capital city of that state, or the most iconic food that a state is known for . If the driver wants to join in, create a collective list.

Take a trip down memory lane with this nostalgic road trip game. Alternating throughout the game, one player must give a clue—usually a simple physical description, like the color of an item—of something that they see out the car window while driving. The other players have to guess what it is that they're talking about, whether it's a popular fast food sign or a tree you're passing.

Would You Rather?

This is one of the best road trip games for adults. Friends, couples and siblings alike will probably end up laughing (or cringing) at some point during a game of Would You Rather. Players must break off into pairs, then take turns asking each other which of two scenarios they would prefer to pursue. You can opt for something like two dramatic life-or-death situations, or ask your fellow passenger to choose between two equally strange foods.

Road Trip Trivia

Each state that you drive through has some pretty deep history. Designate a person as the "host" during a round of Road Trip Trivia, and have them ask the passengers in the car specific questions that pertain to the state or city you're all traveling through.

Before you embark on a road trip, DIY your very own bingo boards. Fill each grid with makes and models of vehicles you'll most likely pass during your trip. At the beginning of the ride, hand out the bingo boards—along with a pen or pencil. Whoever gets bingo first, wins!

Guess the Time

When you've eaten all of the road trip snacks you packed and have slept until there's no way it's possible for you to be tired, take turns guessing the time you'll arrive at your final destination. Whoever guessed the right time (or the closest to it), is the winner.

The Movie Game

The first player begins this game by naming an actor, and the next player has to think of a movie the actor has been in— bonus points if the movie is about food ! The next player must think of another actor who has been in that same movie, and the subsequent player has to state a new movie that actor has been in. Keep playing until someone can't think of an actor or movie, then start again.

The Alphabet Game

In this simple but fun game, car passengers have to take turns finding a billboard or sign that has each letter of the alphabet. Just wait until you get to X, Y and Z!

The Hot Seat

Have you ever wanted to grill one of your fellow passengers but never got the opportunity to do so? In the game of The Hot Seat, each passenger has to take a turn being asked five questions that they normally would never want to answer out loud.

Never Have I Ever

Never Have I Ever is played exactly as it sounds. The passengers who choose to play a round of this game have to hold up five fingers. One person starts by saying a phrase that they've never done, and the rest of the players must either keep their fingers up, or put one finger down if they have done it. The first person to make a fist is out.

The Rhyming Game

To play The Rhyming Game, one player has to choose a word, and the other players must take turns stating a word that rhymes with it. You can also make this even more challenging by using categories, like Italian food terms . If someone can't think of a rhyming word or repeats a word, they're out.

The Quiet Game

Even though it might sound like the easiest, The Quiet Game will challenge the most chatty passengers in the car—whether they're children or adults. The driver must decide a certain time frame, and the rest of the passengers have to remain silent. Whoever speaks or laughs first loses!

6 Best Video Games For Road Trips

Upcoming summer break is a time for entertainment, “recharging our batteries”, and going on numerous trips.

Whether you’re planning to travel by car, plane, or train, and whether your destination is the seaside, mountains, or another city… there is one travel companion that can make your leisure time even more enjoyable – a gaming device and a few road trip video games!

Importance of Entertainment During Road Trips

Why is it worth bringing a gaming device on your journey? Foremost, games can be an excellent form of entertainment during trips. Think about how many times you’ve been bored on a train, in the passenger seat of a car, or during long waits at the airport. With a portable gaming system or smartphone and your favourite game, you can spend that time having fun!

Gaming is also a great idea for entertainment when, for example, the weather ruins your plans for an excursion or a day at the beach, or when you simply want to relax and “do nothing.” Lounging in a hammock, drink in hand, playing your favourite title… sounds wonderful, doesn’t it?

Best Games for a Road Trip

Now that we know why it’s worth bringing a gaming device, let’s have a look at the games. Here’s a list of the best games for a road trip:

This strategic multiplayer game was released in 2018 for Android smartphones and soon became available for iOS, PC, Steam Deck, Switch, and other gaming consoles.

Players take on the roles of spaceship crewmates and their task is to complete missions on the ship… but not everyone is trustworthy. Among the crew, there are 1–3 impostors who must successfully sabotage the mission without getting caught. The true crew must uncover the impostors and eliminate them.

Among Us is a fun, low-demanding game that not only provides entertainment but also stimulates your brain! With this game, you can not only have a good time, but also develop your skills even while on summer break. It’s also a game that works great for family trips, providing enjoyable moments for both kids and adults.

Stardew Valley

This independent game, inspired by Harvest Moon, combines RPG and simulation elements. You can play it on PC, Steam Deck and recent generation consoles.

In the game, you inherit from your grandfather a small farm on the outskirts of a town. Tired of corporate life, your character decides to move and start a new life as a farmer. However, he must first restore the ranch to its former glory – repairing structures, tending to crops and animals, and completing various side quests.

This pleasant and relaxing game is perfect for road trips and effectively kills boredom!

Portal Knights

This RPG game is available on Android, iOS, Switch, Steam Deck, PC, and stationary gaming consoles.

The game is set in a “blocky” fantasy world that was once divided into 9 parts, connected by portals. The player’s task is to reunite the shattered world.

The main quest serves merely as a pretext for hours of exploration, crafting, completing side quests, or engaging in battles with enemies. It’s a great and relaxing game that’s ideal for travels, and you can also enjoy it with younger players.

Jackbox Party Pack

This game can be played not only on gaming consoles and PC but also on Android and Nintendo Switch.

It’s a collection of 5 simple party games such as quizzes, charades, and word games that you can play solo or with friends in split-screen mode.

Jackbox Party Pack is a great alternative to cards or board games, which used to be an inseparable element of our travels when we were kids in the ’80s and ’90s.

Jackbox Party Pack 3

Slay the Spire

This game is an unconventional blend of the RPG, roguelike, turn-based, and card game genres. In addition to PS4 and Xbox One, you can also play it on Android, iOS, and Nintendo Switch.

The players’ goal is to ascend the eponymous Spire, but they must face numerous dangers and enemies in turn-based card battles along the way.

It’s a game that you can easily launch on your phone during a long journey!

Overcooked 2

This game can be played not only on gaming consoles, Steam Deck and PC but also on the Nintendo Switch. It’s a humorous, cooperative, and skill-based game designed for 2 players, with an isometric graphic style.

The game’s story and mechanics are based on many visual gags and puns. The main antagonist is the undead bread – Unbread, brought to life by the mystical Necronomnomicon book. To defeat it, players must assume the roles of chefs and quickly prepare countless meals.

Due to its humorous atmosphere, this game will be a great companion during trips and an ideal way to pass the time or have fun with another person. With its low age threshold and enjoyable animations, it’s also perfect for entertaining younger travel companions.

As you can see, you don’t need expensive equipment to enjoy gaming entertainment during your trips and vacations . Often, all you need is your phone and a few interesting games to make your holiday even more enjoyable.

Enjoy the upcoming summer break, relax, and have fun, regardless of the weather or circumstances! Let the gaming device be your travel companion, providing entertainment wherever you go!

That procgen road trip game is getting a genre-shifting prequel

Authoritarian regimes and banging beats.

Road 96, 2021's procedural road trip sim, is getting a prequel. Road 96: Mile 0 takes place a little bit before the politically tumultuous times of the first game, putting you in the shoes of a pair of teenage protagonists from opposite sides of the tracks. You'll play Zoe and Kaito—characters from the original Road 96 and Lost in Harmony , another of the developer's games, respectively—as they roam the "luxurious condominium" of White Sands, where Kaito's parents work and where Zoe fits right in.

Mile 0 promises to detail the events that led Zoe to flee her home and embark on the first game's road trip over the course of "a story about conflict and difference of opinion between two friends". In a departure from the original, though, it'll also harken back to Kaito's home game of Lost in Harmony with psychedelic musical interludes that see you weaving and dodging your way down curvy, neon-lit melodic roadways.

The first Road 96 was an involving story of teens on the run from an oppressive authoritarian regime, hitchhiking across the fictional nation of Petria on a journey that varied heavily depending on the choices you made, and which used elements of procedural generation to differentiate playthroughs even further. When Rachel Watts checked out its Steam Next Fest demo for PCG back in 2021, she praised it for hitting "the sweet spot in road trip stories where it feels wonderful to be traveling and meeting people, but you also have to manage the tension of trying to survive".

Hopefully, Mile 0 will hit those same highs, and I get some pretty big Life Is Strange vibes from the way the game's trailers and descriptions have gone so far. "These teens are dreamers and they are going to learn where they belong," reads the blurb on Steam, "Will they remain friends?" I suspect the answer is 'no' and I also suspect I am going to be very sad about it.

Road 96: Mile 0 releases on April 4 on Steam . You can keep track of it by following the devs over on Twitter .

Game of Thrones Ireland: 16 Filming Locations From The Show (+ Handy Map)

Although the show finished well over 10 years ago, each week, without fail, we get emails looking for info on the Game of Thrones Ireland connection.

In a nutshell, a whopping 25 different locations in Northern Ireland were used during the filming of the hit HBO series.

Some, like Dunluce Castle and the Dark Hedges , are well known while others, like the beautiful Tollymore Forest Park and Inch Abbey, tend to get missed.

In the guide below, you’ll discover where to find the different Game of Thrones Northern Ireland locations, what scenes they appeared in along with info on Game of Thrones tours.

Some quick need-to-knows about the Game of Thrones Ireland connection

Below, you’ll find some quick info about the Game of Thrones Northern Ireland connection that’s worth a quick read before you scroll on past to see the locations.

1. Why Ireland

According to reports, the Game of Thrones Ireland connection could have easily been a Scottish one instead! It’s said that the producers were debating both places, but that Northern Ireland offered incentives (finance, tax relief, studio space and location access) to secure the deal.

2. The filming locations

Although there were reports of 25 Game of Thrones Ireland locations , the main ones are Tollymore Forest Park, Inch Abbey, Castle Ward, Toome Canal, Slemish Mountain, the Glens of Antrim, Cushendun Caves, Murlough Bay, Ballintoy Harbour and The Dark Hedges. Discover more below.

3. The writers met in college in Dublin

Yep, randomly enough, two of the writers for the show, Dan Weiss and David Benioff, met in Dublin while studying at Trinity College in 1995.

Game of Thrones filming locations Ireland map

The map above has the various Game of Thrones Northern Ireland locations plotted out on it. As you can see, the bulk are in Antrim and Down.

However, there’s also one (Pollnagollum Cave) over in County Fermanagh. The only thing this map leaves out is the studios in Belfast where certain scenes were recorded.

An overview of each of the Game of Thrones filming locations in Ireland

It’s time to dive into the different Game of Thrones filming locations in Northern Ireland, and there’s plenty to get through.

Below, you’ll discover the places that were used to depict everywhere from Lordsport Harbour and The Stormlands to Dothraki Sea, Slaver’s Bay and more.

1. Murlough Bay (Slaver’s Bay)

Murlough Bay

The first of our Game of Thrones Northern Ireland locations is the glorious Murlough Bay – arguably one of the most overlooked of the many Antrim Coast attractions .

It was here that Tyrion Lannister and Jorah Mormont happened upon on their way to Meereen. Alas, there journey hit a bump when they encountered slavers.

There’s a lovely ramble at Murlough Bay that’ll treat you to views of everything from the Scottish Islands to Rathlin Island on a clear day.

2. Fair Head (Dragonstone Cliffs)

Fair Head Cliffs

The towering Fair Head Cliffs stand just up along the coast from Murlough Bay where the measure a dizzying 600 feet in height.

The cliffs were used to depict Dragonstone and it was here, on Antrim’s blustery coast, that Jon Snow had an encounter with Daenerys… and her big aul dragon!

If you visit, you’re a stone’s throw from both Torr Head and the town of Ballycastle , where you can grab a bite to eat, if you fancy.

3. Larrybane Quarry (Renly Baratheon’s Camp)

Larrybane Quarry

The next Game of Thrones Ireland location is the often-overlooked Larrybane Quarry , which can be found a short distance from the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge .

The quarry was used at Renly Baratheon’s Camp (a section of the Stormlands) and the scene showed Renly and his queen, Margaery Tyrell, watching a battle .

It was also at Larrybane Quarry that Renly met with Catelyn Stark . Now, a warning – this is one of several Game of Thrones filming locations in Northern Ireland that doesn’t really resemble what was shown in the show.

4. Ballintoy Harbour (Lordsport Harbour)

Ballintoy

Westward from Larrybane Quarry lies Ballintoy Harbour . After descending a steep and narrow road (and I mean narrow)  you’ll reach a small fishing harbour.

The well-protected bay shields the harbour, nearly enclosing it on all sides and making for a very scenic rest stop. Ballintoy was used to depict Lordsport Harbour in Season 2 .

It was at Ballintoy that Theon Greyjoy returned home. It was at Ballintoy that Theon Greyjoy returned home. You’ll find a plaque at the harbour with info on the scene.

5. The Dark Hedges (Road from King’s Landing)

The Dark Hedges

The Dark Hedges are arguably the Game of Thrones Ireland location that receives the most attention online. The trees here were planted in 1775 by James Stuart to make the approach to his Georgian estate more impressive.

The Dark Hedges were used Season 2, episode 1: On the King’ s Road to depict, unsurprisingly enough, the King’s Road.

The scene that they feature in shows Arya Stark escaping from the King’s Landing and travelling with the Night’s Watch, dressed as a boy. You’ll find it a stone’s throw from the Old Bushmills Distillery .

6. Portstewart Strand (Dorne Coast)

Portstewart Strand

Portstewart Strand in Derry is arguably one of the best beaches in Northern Ireland, and it was here, on the nearly 2 miles of glorious sand, that Jamie and Bronn got into a bit of bother .

The pair were captured at Portstewart by some Dornish soldiers. It was also here were Ellaria and the Sand Snakes discussed a going up against the Lannisters .

There’s plenty of things to do in Derry after you visit Portstewart, from the historic Derry City to our next, very close by attraction.

7. Downhill Beach (Dragonstone)

Mussenden Temple

You’ll find few temples in Ireland (or anywhere, really!) with a location as dramatic as Mussenden – a replica of Rome’s Temple of Vesta .

The temple offers a magnificent view over Downhill Beach, which is right next to Portstewart Strand.

If you cast your mind back, it was at Mussenden Temple that Stannis Baratheon rejected the old gods of Westeros and is proclaimed of the Lord of Light.

8. Cushendun Caves (The Stormlands / Shadow Creature Scene)

Cushendun Caves

The Cushendun Caves are another of the better-known Game of Thrones Northern Ireland locations, and a quick glance above should give you an idea as to why.

Formed over a period of 400 million years , the caves can be found a stones throw from the little village of Cushendun , designed in the style of a Cornish village.

The Cushendun Caves were made famous by Game of Thrones in Season 2 Episode 4 where they were used as the Shadow creature’s birth site .

9. Castle Ward (Winterfell)

Castle Ward Winterfell

Photos courtesy of Tourism Northern Ireland

You’ll find the 16th-century Castle Ward , which was the backdrop for the series pilot and a chunk of season one, just 40 minutes from Belfast.

Castle Ward was used as ‘Winterfell’ – the home of the Stark family . Its towering medieval walls and now-iconic castle tower gate made it an ideal shooting location for the show.

It’s also here that you’ll find what is arguably the most popular Game of Thrones tour Northern Ireland has to offer. More on the tours later in the guide.

10. Inch Abbey (Riverrun)

You’ll discover the ruins of Inch Abbey situated on the northern bank of the Quoile River, where it has been since the 12th or 13th century.

You might recognise Inch Abbey as the setting for the Riverlands scenes , i.e. the beginning of the War of the Five Kings.

If you visit when the weather’s fine, keep an eye out for Downpatrick Cathedral. It’s said that this is where St. Patrick is buried.

11. Dunluce Castle (Pyke Castle)

Dunluce Castle

Home to the House of Greyjoy , GOT fans may not immediately recognise Dunluce Castle as the filming location for Castle Greyjoy, AKA Pyke Castle. This is due to the fact that a fair sprinkling of CGI was used.

However, as you near the ancient castle – originally dating back to the 13th century – you’ll soon see how and why they filmed these scenes here.

Similar to nearby Kinbane Castle and Dunseverick Castle , the ruins of Dunluce Castle are located right next to the sea.

12. Tollymore Forest Park (The Haunted Forest)

Tollymore Forest Park

Tollymore Forest Park is another of our favoiurite places to visit in Northern Ireland – few parks on earth pack a punch like this place.

This expanse of forest is home to medieval gates, bridges that look like they’ve been plucked from Lord of The Rigs and endless, beautiful red woods.

The park was used to portray The Haunted Forest and it was here where the Starks met their baby Direwolves for the very first time.

13. Slemish Mountain (Dothraki Sea)

Slemish Mountain

Our next Game of Thrones Northern Ireland location has a mighty tale attached to it – it was here, on Slemish Mountain , where St. Patrick was taken…

After he was kidnapped by pirates as a kid! It’s right below the mountain that you’ll find Shillanavogy Valley, which was used to portray Dothraki Sea in the show.

It featured in a scene where Khal Drogo travelled to see his new wife, Vaes Dothrak (it was the land here that he rode across !).

14. Glenariff Forest Park (Runestone)

Glenariff Forest

You’ll find our next location, Glenariff Forest Park , tucked away in the Glens of Antrim , where it’s home to woodland, waterfalls and stunning scenery.

It was here (or Galboly, to be specific) that was used as Runestone in the show . It was Runestone where Lord Yohn Royce took Robyn Arryn.

There was also a scene where Sansa Stark watched as Robyn Arryn tried his hand at dueling. There’s some great walks to tackle here!

15. Binevenagh

Binevenagh

Binevenagh Mountain is a Game of Thrones Northern Ireland location that many miss! It was here that Daenerys fled to with her dragon after escaping Meereen.

Binevenagh sits at the outermost edge of the breath-taking Antrim Plateau, and those that conquer the hike here will be treated to views out over Armagh and Derry.

When you finish up, you’re a short spin away from Downhill Beach and Portstewart Strand. You’re also a handy 40-minute drive from the lovely little town of Portrush .

16. Pollnagollum Cave

Our final Game of Thrones Northern Ireland location takes us out to County Fermanagh and into the Marble Arch Caves Geopark (not far from the Cuilcagh boardwalk ).

It’s here that you’ll also find Pollnagollum Cave, where it’s hidden away behind a waterfall. It was here that the Brotherhood Without Banners hid from the forces of Lannister.

There’s plenty of unique things to do in Fermanagh , and the walk out to see the waterfall is just one of them!

Game of Thrones tours from Belfast

game of thrones tours belfast

Thanks to the Game of Thrones Northern Ireland connection, a handful of tours have sprung up that make the perfect day trip from Belfast .

We’ve featured several of them in this guide over the years, but only one has maintained consistently good reviews – this one (affiliate link).

COMSTOCK PARK, MI – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers opened their twelve-game road trip with a solid 5-2 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps at LMCU Ballpark on Tuesday night. Wisconsin lowered their magic number for clinching the team’s first playoff spot since 2016 to five with the win thanks to a mixture of clutch pitching, big hits, and solid defense.

West Michigan (29-29) loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the second inning on a single and back-to-back walks. Rattlers starting pitcher Mark Manfredi escaped the inning with a force play at second to keep the game scoreless.

The game was not scoreless long after that. Eduarqui Fernández launched a lead-off home run to left-center to start the third inning and the Rattlers were in front. Fernández has five homers for the Timber Rattlers this season.

They were not in front for long. Seth Stephenson reached on a bunt single, stole second, and went to third on an error to start the inning. Manfredi hit the next batter to put runners on the corners. Max Anderson tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

Wisconsin manager Victor Estevez was ejected moments later after a dispute over whether Manfredi had hit Stephen Scott or the knob of Scott’s bat. The umpires rule a hit batsman. Estevez disagreed and was ejected from the game by plate umpire Brandon Schmitt. Manfredi was able to get out of the inning by retiring the next two batters.

The Timber Rattlers (37-21) went back in front in the top of the fourth. Luke Adams lined a homer to deep center. His fifth homer of the season gave Wisconsin a 2-1 lead.

Whitecaps reliever Erick Pinales walked the first three Wisconsin batters he faced in the top of the fifth inning. Jadher Areinamo drove in one run with a fielder’s choice. Pinales balked in the second run of the inning for a 4-1 advantage.

Manfredi settled in and worked around a two-out single in the fourth and a one-out triple in the fifth to keep the Whitecaps off the scoreboard. That put him in line for his third win of the season.

Reliever Stiven Cruz allowed the first two Whitecaps to reach on a walk and a single in bottom of the sixth. However, he got a 5-4-3 double play and a strikeout to end the inning.

Cruz was not as fortunate in the seventh, but he – and the Rattlers still got a huge break thanks to the arm of Fernández in right. Stephenson walked on four pitches and stole second again to start the inning. Danny Serretti singled to right to drive in Stephenson. Serretti decided to go for a double. He lost his gamble as Fernández threw to Areinamo covering second base and Serretti was out. Instead of the tying run at the plate with no outs for the Whitecaps, they had none on with one out. That opening allowed Cruz to navigate the inning with no more damage on a foul pop and a grounder to short.

The Rattlers added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning. Adams tripled to start the frame. Matt Wood drove in Adams with a single and the Rattlers were up 5-2.

That was more than enough for Will Childers, who rejoined the Rattlers from Biloxi earlier in the day, to close out the game. Childers walked two over two scoreless, hitless innings for his second save of the season with Wisconsin.

Cubs look to end road trip on high note vs. Rays

One day after Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell was not pleased with his team's lack of offensive punch, Cody Bellinger landed a big blow.

Share Video

Bellinger hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the seventh inning as the Cubs beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 on Wednesday. Chicago will attempt to win the three-game series when the two clubs meet again in the Thursday night finale at St. Petersburg, Fla.

Bellinger's big blast put the Cubs ahead 4-2 as they evened the series and improved to 2-4 on their seven-game road trip.

"Three-run homers change games," Counsell said. "It was a big swing at a time when we needed it."

The Rays, one day after rallying for a 5-2 victory on Brandon Lowe's walk-off homer against Cubs closer Hector Neris, were hoping history would repeat itself on Wednesday.

However, Neris got Lowe on a flyout to center with two on and two outs in the ninth to drop the Rays to 1-5 on their seven-game homestand.

"It was interesting how that inning unfolded from what took place last night," Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said. "Brandon's probably the right guy to have up there. It looked like a (splitter) that he just missed."

Cash was not shocked by Bellinger's game-winner.

"I think that was the third cutter Bellinger had seen," Cash said. "Cody Bellinger's a really good hitter and makes adjustments within the at-bat. He went out and made sure he was going to catch that one out front, and he did."

The series finale will feature a matchup of pitchers needing a win.

Chicago left-hander Justin Steele (0-3, 3.65 ERA) will be opposed by Tampa Bay right-hander Taj Bradley (1-4, 5.17), with both hurlers having had little success so far this season.

In 14 combined starts, Steele and Bradley are 1-7 despite a combined 4.28 ERA, so their respective offenses may be at the forefront as the clubs meet for only the 22nd time. The Rays hold a 12-9 all-time series lead.

Steele has respectable numbers but hasn't picked up a win this season. Over his past three starts, the southpaw is 0-1 but with a 0.95 ERA -- thanks largely to the Cubs' shoddy fielding.

In two consecutive outings against the Cincinnati Reds this month, Steele has watched eight runs cross home plate, but only two were earned.

Steele, 28, has made two career start against the Rays, one in each of the previous two seasons. He owns an 0-1 record with a 6.35 ERA vs. Tampa Bay.

After giving up 23 homers last year during his rookie season in 23 games (21 starts), Bradley has surrendered eight long balls in six starts this season, an average of 2.3 per nine innings. Last season, he gave up 2.0 home runs per nine innings.

In his only career start against the Cubs, on May 29, 2023, Bradley gave up one run, which was unearned, and three hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. He wound up taking a 1-0 loss.

Cubs end road trip lamenting more missed opportunities

Joey Johnston

ST. PETERSBURG -- Offensively, there were no extra-base hits. On the mound, there was no victory (still) for the luckless left-hander Justin Steele . It was yet another agonizing one-run game. And just when it seemed the Cubs had a ninth-inning rally brewing, hope was yanked from them by a stunning defensive play.

Thursday night’s 3-2 defeat against the Rays at Tropicana Field left the Cubs still with just one series victory since May 10-12 (a two-game sweep of the White Sox). It dropped them to 13-15 in one-run games. As if that wasn’t enough, they had a late-night getaway flight to Chicago and an early wake-up call for Friday’s afternoon game against the Cardinals.

"Things just didn’t go our way," second baseman Nico Hoerner said. "It’s frustrating, but we have to move on."

Hoerner had every right to be extremely frustrated. In the ninth against Rays closer Pete Fairbanks, Michael Busch drew a one-out walk. Hoerner then drilled what appeared to be a single up the middle, a probable first-and-third situation and a chance for redemption.

But Rays shortstop Taylor Walls dove deep in the hole to stab Hoerner’s sharply hit ball, then shoveled it out of his glove to second baseman Brandon Lowe, who turned a stunning double play.

"That was probably the best play ever made against me," Hoerner said. "That was more than game-changing. It was game-ending."

"That was one heck of a great defensive play," Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. "So credit to [Walls]."

There was some blame to spread around on the Cubs’ side.

Steele pitched six innings of scoreless ball, lowering his ERA to 3.22 in the process. But it still wasn’t enough to register his first victory of the season.

The Cubs, leading 2-0 entering the bottom of the seventh, turned to Mark Leiter Jr. Six batters later, Leiter was lifted and the Cubs trailed 3-2.

"I let the team down," Leiter said. "I didn’t make enough pitches. We played good enough to win the game, but I put us in a bad position."

Tampa Bay's rally began with Amed Rosario’s soft grounder to third base. Patrick Wisdom collected the ball, but threw wide of first base for an error that put Rosario on second. Leiter then walked Jose Siri -- the critical at-bat, according to Counsell -- and Josh Lowe collected a one-out RBI single. Lowe stole second, putting two runners in scoring position. From there, an RBI groundout by pinch-hitter Ben Rortvedt tied the game and a run-scoring single by Yandy Díaz handed the Cubs their first deficit.

"Steele is really good," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "He creates a lot of deception. He really kept us off-balance. But we hung in there and had some good at-bats against Leiter to get back into the ballgame."

Steele, who faced one batter over the minimum through five innings before escaping a bases-loaded situation in the sixth, was diplomatic about seeing the victory disintegrate.

"As a pitcher, you can only control the controllables," Steele said. "I just try to put my team in a position to win every time I go out there."

Leiter was more pointed.

"He deserved better," Leiter said. "We let him down. I let him down."

"Justin was awesome," Counsell said. "They made him work in that sixth inning, but he made some big pitches. … For [Leiter], there wasn’t a lot of hard contact. It was a tough play for Patrick. He had a shot, but wasn’t able to make it. That got the ball rolling for them, and I thought the walk hurt."

For Counsell, the larger issue continued to be Chicago's inability to generate consistent offense. The Cubs played small-ball in the fifth inning, scoring both of their runs on squeeze bunts (after Wisdom set up the sequence with a sacrifice bunt of his own). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it was only the sixth time since 2015 that a team bunted a ball into play in three straight plate appearances within a single inning.

After that, though, the Cubs had just three more baserunners, all on walks. Two reached scoring position, but that was followed by three strikeouts -- one in the sixth, two in the seventh -- to end those innings.

The Cubs were held to three or fewer hits for the seventh time this season. They had eight such games in all of 2023.

"All of this is going to help us in the long run," Steele said. "It’s a long season. Down the road, I feel like we’re really going [to improve] and come out better."
