You will also discover  Belgium's capital city of Brussels , with its wealth of unmissable typically European heritage sites like the Grand Place, its central square. Its tiny streets, canals and typical houses also make it one of Europe's treasures.

Dive into quintessential Netherlands with  the fields of flowers of the Keukenhof  – the finest spring gardens in the world - windmills, Alkmaar's historic cheese markets, the numerous canal cities, and much more! What the Trip is Like

This cruise is rated Level 1, Easiest , and is appropriate for anyone in good health who is physically active. Daily shore excursions require a moderate amount of walking, often along uneven cobblestone streets and up and down stairs. To better accommodate guests and their individual fitness levels, AMA Waterways programs provide several levels of walking tours whenever possible: "Gentle Walkers" are designed for slower walkers to enjoy the tour in a relaxed manner, "Active Walkers" enjoy the tours at a normal pace, and there is also a "Late Starters" group offered to guests who prefer to sleep in.

Staterooms range from 160-350 square feet (depending on category), and typical hotel room amenities include hair dryer, bathrobe, television, and mini-safe. Every stateroom has individually controlled air conditioning, internet access, wi-fi (free throughout the ship!) and a movie-on-demand system that offers a variety of English language channels, films and music options. Most staterooms have balconies, either walk-on or French, but lower categories just have fixed windows or portholes.

AMA is known for its efforts to bring in regional cuisine, which is always fun as you explore new countries and cultures. Breakfast and lunch are served buffet-style with made-to-order specialties. Dinner is multi-course. Every lunch and dinner includes free-flowing regional wines as well as complimentary beer and soft drinks. Bottled water, specialty teas, and coffees are always available free of charge. All ships have an open seating policy in the main restaurant to encourage you to meet your fellow travelers.

On Board AMA Riverboats

AMA Waterways specializes in high-end river journeys that navigate some of Europe's most famous waterways. Their ships accommodate approximately 150 passengers in comfortable staterooms, all with scenic views. While this might sound like a lot of travelers compared to Wilderness Travel's traditional small group trips, it's a modest number of passengers in the cruise ship world and there are a number of comfortable lounges, dining rooms, bars, and sitting areas on board for you to find a perfect spot to socialize or quietly relax, depending on your mood.

There is a warm and welcoming feel to all AMA cruises. From the moment you step onboard, you will be welcomed by crew, staff, and leaders who are friendly, professional and English speaking. There is a high staff to guest ratio (1:3) that assures a feeling of being well-taken-care-of at all times. Your fellow passengers will come from a variety of English-speaking countries and guests tend to mingle freely. No need to bring fancy clothes as the atmosphere onboard is casual, although guests do tend to dress up for the Captain's dinner.

Daily shore excursions are included in the cost of the cruise, along with free time to explore on your own. Each tour is led by a qualified, local guide. At many stops, you'll be free to choose from one of several options. Complimentary headset systems ensure that you hear every word of your tour. AMA ships carry more than two dozen bicycles and helmets, free of charge, for your use should you want to venture into the countryside.

There is a reception desk onboard that is open 24 hours a day with somebody available to help you, should you need it. All announcements and lectures will be presented in English as the clientele is mainly North American, Australian, and European. All AMA cruises prohibit smoking inside their ships. Smoking is only permitted outside on the sun deck.

Electricity on board all ships is 220v, with 2-pin power outlets. You will need an adapter, and/or converter depending on which electrical appliances you bring with you. There are no medical facilities on board although if medical services are needed, they can easily be called from shore. Laundry services are available for a fee.

All ships are equipped with either a whirlpool or a small, heated swimming pool. If you think you might want to use this, be sure to pack a swimsuit!

Tips are not included in the price of the cruise, and are entirely at your discretion. The recommended rate suggested is 3 Euros per passenger per day to the Cruise Manager and 12 Euros per passenger per day to the crew, which will be divided up and distributed. You can use your credit card for this expense. It is also customary to acknowledge a particularly good performance of a local guide by leaving a tip of 1-2 Euros per tour.

Wilderness Travel enjoys partnering with AMA Waterways because they offer a high quality product with thoughtfully planned itineraries, allowing travelers to experience Europe's most glorious architecture, medieval castles, historic villages, and idyllic countryside with minimal effort. Since these trips are relatively short, you may consider this as part of a longer, European adventure!

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

A wind of change is blowing through the city! Brussels is getting a makeover and its port is at the heart of this redevelopment project.

Inviting riverbanks, graceful bridges, riverside strolls, signposted cycle paths and sports clubs... The whole Port of Brussels area is a place to explore, in the heart of the city.

Le Royal, also known as Sport Nautique de Bruxelles, was founded in July 1865, under the reign of Léopold I. In 1868, the club was invited to a private regatta at Laeken Palace. It was such a success that the King named it ‘Le Royal’. Le Royal is the oldest sailing club in the capital and one of the 3 oldest rowing clubs in the country.

Founded in Brussels in 1874, the Union Nautique de Bruxelles is a rowing club dedicated to every level, whether it’s competition, leisure or improvement. Among its most famous affiliates is the 2020 European U23 Indoor Rowing Champion, Caitlin Govaert.

The Sea Scouts of the 75th Sea Scouts brigade have brightened up the canal, whatever the weather, ever since 1921. The division has a fleet of 7 ‘lelievlets’, metal-hulled boats operated by paddles, sails or a motor. They can accommodate a small crew of up to 8 people.

Roodbaard is a Marine Scouts division belonging to the active and pluralistic Scouting Federation FOS Open Scouting. Roodbaard is the Dutch name for Barbarossa, an Ottoman pirate. Barbarossa was the son of a Turkish father and a Greek mother, and, as such, a multicultural and multinational sailor.

Founded in 1922, the Royal Marine Cadet Corps (RCM) trains young people between the age of 12 and 21 to live aboard a ship. Their instructors include civilians and members of the military forces. Members wear the navy uniform with the awards and insignia of the corps.

The BRYC is a sailing school, the Brussels Sailing Academy (BSA), and organises theoretical courses and sea excursions. It is also a dinghy sailing school catering for children aged 7 to 14. Power boating is also an integral part of its activities, with its fleet of more than twenty motorboats.

The Brussels Royal Yacht Club (BRYC) is both a seaport and a marina, accommodating over 200 sailing boats and motorboats. The BRYC has a club house, with a bar-restaurant organising all kinds of activities and nautical events.

Canal It Up has decided to tackle the problem of litter floating in the canal. To raise awareness of this issue, Canal It Up takes volunteers out in its fleet of kayaks each week to fish for litter in the heart of Brussels.

Brussels by Water encourages the use of navigable waterways in the Brussels Region for tourism, recreation and education, in order to improve the integration of waterways in the city. BBW offers guided cruise packages, in combination with tours, walks and bike rides.

Founded in 1878 by a group of students, the CRB has an impressive track record. Women members were admitted as early as 1928, making them a pioneer. It is also the only French-speaking club to have won a bronze medal at the Senior World Championships in Tampere (Finland), in 1995.

Founded in 1979, the Cercle des Régates de Bruxelles Kayak (CRBK) has around one hundred members. In anything from a speed or river kayak to a two-seater canoe, the CRBK offers introductions to this water sport that is currently little known in the capital, as well as organising fun and informal trips in Belgium and abroad.

Kanal — Centre Pompidou is a modern and contemporary art museum located at Quai des Péniches, in the buildings of an old Citroën garage. In 2024, it will become the largest cultural institution in Brussels, with 35,000 m 2 dedicated to every kind of artistic creation.

Dutch-speaking Brussels Art Centre located in the remarkable La Luna building. Built in the transition between the Art Deco and Modernist styles, it originally housed the Lunatheater. The Kaaitheater presents about 75 productions per season.

Dansaert is the trendy downtown district, similar to Berlin’s Kreuzberg. It extends from Place Sainte-Catherine, with its fish restaurants, to the Halles Saint-Géry, a former covered market which is now an exhibition space. The neighbourhood also has some independent boutiques, vintage clothing stores and antique shops.

The Millennium Iconoclast Museum of Art, better known as MIMA is a museum of urban art and culture 2.0. Its exhibitions promote a young generation which transgresses artistic genres and attracts a new audience to the museum.

La Fonderie is the Brussels Museum of Industry and Employment. Located in an old working-class district of Molenbeek, it watches over Brussels' industrial heritage and offers an original approach to the history of work in the capital.

Created in 2013, the Brussels Beer Project aims to make beer history today and tomorrow. The brand-new brasserie brews a new beer each week and welcomes brewers from all over the world. With its products, the BBP shares a circular, multicultural, contemporary and lively vision!

COOP is an economic and cultural hub, a place for working and learning. Housed in the old buildings of a beautifully renovated industrial mill, it has a panoramic terrace that offers a breath-taking and unprecedented 360° view of Brussels.

FLOW is a seasonal outdoor pool, beside the canal in Anderlecht. Measuring 17 x 7 m, it provides the opportunity for a proper swim, free of charge and throughout the summer. Its sunny terraces are ideal for some relaxation and to enjoy some holiday spirit in the heart of the city.

La Brasserie de la Senne is a Belgian craft brewery located in Brussels on the former industrial site of Tour & Taxis. It specializes in brewing bitter and light ales. The brewery uses only natural ingredients and adopts a sustainable and qualitative approach, without compromising on the commercial aspect.

Built in 1955, this splendid work of art, with its sumptuous metal structure, lifts up horizontally to let boats pass. The current bridge replaced the one destroyed during the Second World War.

With its 240 m long and 12 m wide quay, the new passenger terminal at the Port of Brussels provides a spot for river cruise ships to moor in Brussels. By 2030 it is expected to accommodate 35,000 passengers per year.

The new Brussels skate park covers no less than 600 m²! Sk8port is a refreshing spot for some free fun and relaxation for skate enthusiasts. All aboard!

The BRYC is a marina accommodating more than 200 sailing boats and motorboats, thanks to its fully equipped 200 m² hangar. It also has an authentic clubhouse with a bar-restaurant. Many different events are organised there.

Built in 1956, this is the first fixed bridge from the sea. It therefore marks the boundary between the maritime and river sections of the Brussels port. The bridge is one of the main routes into Brussels. 83 m long and 30.55 m wide, it is also often called ‘a car’s nightmare’.   The walk between Van Praet bridge and Trooz bridge runs along the Royal Estate of Laeken. This estate boasts the largest colony of herons in the Brussels Region (nearly 200 nests).

The Docks Bruxsel shopping centre was built on the site of Poêleries Godin, founded in 1858. It was where the French socialist and utopian industrialist erected his so-called Familistère , intended to house his workers’ families. In the Godin factories, Docks added the so-called ‘Cathedral’ in his architecture, thus nicknamed by the workers for its majestic framework.

The former logistics platform of Tour & Taxis dating back to the early twentieth century was sold by the Port of Brussels for restoration purposes. The complex includes buildings of great architectural value: the Royal Depot, the Sheds, Hôtel des Douanes,  Hôtel de la Poste and the Ferry Terminal. It has become one of the trendiest spots in the capital and hosts the Book Fair, the BRAFA, the Brussels Design Market…

60 m long, this bridge is classed as a bow-string bridge, due to the two massive arches supporting the deck. The bridge will feature a 6m-wide area for cycling and pedestrians and another zone for vehicles. It has been named in honour of a pioneering activist in the Belgian LGBTQI+ community.

Until the 1960s, the Quai des Péniches housed several construction companies. The first section features the old Citroën buildings, which have since been converted into the Kanal Museum. Restored and repurposed by the Port, this area is regularly used as a venue for events. A large park should soon see the light of day on the opposite bank.

Since 2017, the Waterbus has been sailing between Brussels and Vilvoorde, six months a year, 8 times a day. In 2018, the Waterbus carried almost 45,000 passengers in the course of 145 days, or about 310 per day (excluding special events).

The new Guido Vanderhulst passerelle uses a prestressed concrete technique and is one of its first applications in Brussels and Belgium. Thanks to its retractable staircase, operated from Molenbeek lock, it can be used both in a raised and lowered position.

A revival is underway at Biestebroeck Basin. Just in case there weren’t already enough projects at the Port, there are also plans for the land nearby, beyond the domain: housing, schools, shops… and plenty of public green spaces. The Brussels Beer Project brewery has recently moved into a beautiful brand-new building on land granted by the Port of Brussels.

Anderlecht lock is the first in the Brussels Region when coming from the south and the tenth when arriving from Charleroi. The lock is also an important element in flood prevention in the city during periods of heavy rain.

This is the most bucolic and rural part of the bike path running along the canal on the actual domain.

Hospices bridge was built between 1932 and 1933 to replace the old bridge dating back to 1847. It takes its name from the powerful Hospices de Bruxelles, as the former owners of the land along the canal. It is a moving bridge, whose deck rises horizontally. 19.30 m long and 7 m high, it is manipulated by a bridge operator who elevates the bridge upon request by waterway users.

In lush green surroundings boasting beautiful homes and walks, the ancient mooring basin is probably one of the most pleasant places to stop along the canal in Brussels. Lined with rows of poplars, lawns and benches, it offers a peaceful atmosphere and a picturesque collection of houseboats converted into dwellings.

This cycling and pedestrian bridge connects Brussels to Molenbeek. It is named after Loredana Marchi, who has been working for more than 30 years to strengthen women's rights in the canal zone districts.

Close to the Porte de Ninove, the Fatima Mernissi passerelle is named after the Moroccan sociologist and writer, who dedicated her life to feminist reflection and the freedom of Maghreb women, and died in 2015.

As the eleventh lock on the journey from Charleroi, the large Molenbeek Lock was completed in 1938. It receives about 80 boats each day and has a capacity of almost 40,000 m 3 . Its facilities provide room to store spare equipment. In addition, the lock enhances the perception of the port.

The Best River Cruises In All Of Europe, According To Reviews

T ravelers looking to experience a destination usually keep away from ocean cruises, as these massive ships holding thousands of people make it difficult to see the best of a place, so most of what they see is the cruise's deck and buffet line. That's fine for relaxation, but not so great for true exploring. However, that's not the same for river cruises. River cruises offer the best parts of ocean cruises — like easy boarding, inclusive experiences, a crowd of people eager to meet others, and great food — combined with the benefits of a travel-ambitious trip. If you aren't sure  which type of cruise is best for you , it might be time to give the river a chance.

River cruises offer an array of excursions to choose from, so tourgoers can create their own customized trip. As the ship sails, you'll have the opportunity to experience small villages that otherwise wouldn't make it to your itinerary. That's what intrepid adventurers will find on these European adventures, which are undoubtedly some of the best river cruises in the world . Although the river cruise marketplace is a big one, these cruises offer interesting itineraries with one-of-a-kind experiences, excellent value, and high-end accommodations. Let's get started.

AmaWaterway - Taste Of Bordeaux

Bordeaux is a beautiful epicenter of food, wine, and gastronomic excellence, and that's exactly what cruisers will see — and taste — if they embark on AmaWaterways' seven-day Taste of Bordeaux cruise that travels both the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. The trip heads through Bordeaux, Libourne, Blaye, Bourg, Cadillac, and Cussac Fort Médoc, and other cities (such as San Sebastián and Bilbao in neighboring Spain) can also be added. On the journey, travelers can expect to hike a vineyard in Libourne, take a tour of a 17th-century citadel recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, visit a medieval castle that looks largely untouched despite its long history, and, of course, taste plenty of Bordeaux wine. Perhaps the best part of this cruise is its ability to customize, as travelers can choose which excursion they would like to do nearly every day.

The Taste of Bordeaux cruise, which starts at $3,700, earned 4.5 stars on Cruise Critic . One previous customer said, "The only way to describe it is 'marvelous.' The itinerary is filled with great moments. The chateaus, the wine tastings, the scenery." Visitors see the Bordeaux region from the AmaDolce ship, which is specifically tailored to the Taste of Bordeaux cruise with its red-colored lounge as a nod to red wine, a cozy, wood bar perfect for enjoying a glass after a long day, and a chef's table restaurant ideal for bringing French flavors to life.

I was impressed with the values demonstrated by Avalon Waterways and staff."

Viking River Cruises - Portugal's River Of Gold

Portugal is a mix of the old and the new, thanks to its happening restaurants and innovative art galleries that combine seamlessly with historic sites, traditional recipes, and unbeatable winemaking methods. On Viking River Cruises' 10-day Portugal's River of Gold cruise, which travels along the Douro River and also stops in Spain, patrons will see this Portuguese and Spanish culture in action from the view of a "baby longship." These ships are smaller than Viking's other ships because of Portuguese rules, but visitors can still enjoy features like Scandinavian-style décor and floor-to-ceiling views of the Douro River. The cruise garnered 4.4 stars on Cruise Critic with customers saying things like, "The only thing bad I can say was that it ended too soon." The cruise line is also one of the best for a romantic couples getaway, according to reviews .

The $4,000 cruise takes patrons through Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal; Porto, the birthplace of Port wine and a spiritual epicenter; Pinhâo, a laid-back Portuguese village; Barca d'Alva, a river town near the Spanish border; and Salamanca, a Spanish city over the border that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Throughout the cruise's stops, visitors will head to Mateus Palace for a wine tasting, learn how Port wine is made, check out a medieval fortress, explore a sacred town and admire a Baroque-style chapel, and experience the "Golden Age of Discovery" at structures like the Jerónimos Monastery.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into the Netherlands and Belgium. You are not required to obtain a visa to enter either country for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact an embassy or consulate of the Netherlands and of Belgium to determine what travel documentation is required.

International maritime security guidelines require that your passport information be provided to us prior to your embarkation. You need to provide this information to us as soon as you book your cruise or boarding may be denied. Once you board the riverboat, your passport will be held by the purser temporarily to make copies.

Please Note: Longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship, as well as both sides of your driver's license. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Your riverboat is registered in Basel, Switzerland. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. ,  no vaccinations are currently required for travel to The Netherlands or Belgium. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country , please contact an embassy or consulate of The Netherlands and of Belgium to determine whether vaccinations are required for your travel.

While a Netherlands and Belgium cruise is very relaxing and the pace leisurely, to enjoy all the tour has to offer, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, as some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. There is a moderate to significant amount of walking during our excursions, often along cobblestone streets. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion.

Your riverboat has four decks: Sun, Diamond, Ruby and Emerald. On some riverboats, elevator accesses the Diamond Deck, Ruby Deck, and Diamond Deck, but not the Sun Deck or Emerald Deck. On others, the elevator accesses all decks except the Sun Deck. There is no chair lift between any of the decks. Please refer to your electronic personal documents for the specifics of your riverboat.

Because you will be cruising on a river and not on the open sea, you are never far from land and, therefore, there is no doctor on board. In case of emergency, we can easily dock the boat and call for an ambulance or medical assistance.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate service animals on any river cruise for medical and legal reasons.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

On board the riverboat, smoking is permitted in a limited area of the Sun deck. Smoking (including e-Cigarettes) is not permitted in any cabin, the restaurant, the lounge or any other interior space.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The climate in the Netherlands is temperate. From May through October, the average high temperatures increase as you travel south along the rivers with an average high temperatures of 63 to 71 °F (17 to 22 °C) in Amsterdam and average low temperatures from 45 to 53 °F (7 to 12 °C). Rainfall amounts are moderate in this region and remain constant throughout the year, although late spring and early summer are generally the wetter seasons of the year. To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is flexible and allows for layering. Casual, cotton clothing is recommended. Lightweight jackets and sweaters are recommended during springtime when daily high temperatures are still about 60 °F (16 °C). Evenings are very cool as the temperatures fall into the 30's and 40's °F overnight (single digits in Celsius). Pack comfortable, yet sturdy, walking shoes that have already been broken-in, as many of the sites visited were built centuries ago and have uneven surfaces, some steep inclines and many steps.

Summer days will be warm and comfortable, but temperatures will drop in the evening.

During evenings aboard the riverboat, dress is resort casual. Items such as slacks and collared shirts are appropriate for men. For women, slacks, a dress or a skirt and blouse are suitable. For dinner and throughout the evening, guests should refrain from wearing shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops or sneakers. Your journey also includes one or two special occasion meals, where a sport coat and tie for gentlemen and a dress/pantsuit for ladies are suggested.  (Your Tauck Director will advise you prior to those evenings.)

Bathrobes, slippers and hairdryers are provided in each cabin.

Valet laundry service is available on the riverboat for a fee. There is no valet dry cleaning available on the riverboat. Ironing facilities on the riverboat are available by request to the front desk. Category 7 cabins feature their own irons and ironing boards.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed. No medications are sold on board the riverboat.

We suggest that you pack the following items for your cruise on the waterways of the Netherlands and Belgium:

  • Flat, rubber-soled walking shoes for shipboard
  • Sturdy but comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in for onshore
  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm functions (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your ship cabin while traveling

A cruise holiday isn’t always about setting sail across vast oceans. For an alternative type of break on the water, winding your way inland might sound similar but it’s a vastly different experience.

From crossing deep into the untouched areas of the Amazon rainforest to exploring some of Europe ’s finest cities, the river cruise experience is one that allows tourists to get to grips with the history, culture and tradition of a destination in a slow, immersive fashion.

This could be in the form of sampling Creole cuisine in Mississippi or discovering historic sites in Vietnam , but whatever it is, there’s plenty of choice across Europe , Asia , South America and North America .

Read on for a selection of the best cruises, from the Mississippi to the Mekong.

The Danube rises in the mountains of Germany’s Black Forest

Europe’s second longest river – and arguably its most famous – river takes you through amazing capital cities and host of charming towns, as well as plenty of scenic countryside in Austria , Hungary , Slovakia and Romania. Cruises along the Danube can vary from a handful of days to almost three weeks, giving you time to explore the elegance of cities like Vienna , Budapest, Bratislava or Belgrade.

Emerald Cruises lets you see the best of the Danube with the addition of a hefty dose of traditional German culture in Munich. Leaving the Bavarian capital, you’ll travel to Passau before a quick cross-border trip to the Unesco-listed Czech city of Cesky Krumlov. Vienna is the next city, replete with opulent architecture, before a quick overnight stay in Bratislava on the sixth night. Guided tours and hikes around the castle are included, before you get three nights to explore Budapest, the Hungarian capital that is blessed with picturesque buildings, relaxed thermal baths and a buzzing nightlife scene.

From £1,999pp, including nine nights’ accommodation, full board, tours of Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest and airport transfers. Departing 7 May 2024 to 20 October 2024.

The Amazon basin has an area of around 2.7 million square miles

This famous river runs for over 4,000 miles throughout South America and is a major part of the eponymous rainforest, one of the most biodiverse and important natural areas on the planet. A river cruise remains the best way to reach deeper into the jungle, with many cruises beginning in the northern Brazilian city of Manaus or in the Peruvian city of Lima.

Start in Peru’s enchanting capital with the Peruvian Rivers and Rainforest Discovery cruise from Uniworld. You’ll fly to Iquitos, the largest city in the Amazon as your next stop, before delving into some of the most remote areas in the world as you take to the waters. From here, nature takes centre stage, with a variety of experiences – including jungle walks and kayaking on a lake – added to the enjoyment of natural features such as giant lilies, towering barrigona trees and around 10 per cent of the world’s known animal species.

From £8,799pp, including 10 nights’ accommodation, full board, return flights from London, domestic flights and various excursions. Departing regularly from 17 January until 6 November 2024.

The Nile starts in the Mediterranean and runs through as far south as Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya

Start in  Cairo  and make your way down to Aswan over a few days (though many shorter routes operate between  Aswan and Luxor  only). For a relaxing way to take in riverside scenery and some of Egypt’s most important historical sites, a river cruise is the ideal choice.

AP Touring’s  Egypt Discovery  trip takes you on a round trip from Cairo. You’ll cross thousands of years of history, starting with West Bank the Valley of the Kings, before a short flight to Aswan to explore Abu Simbel and a sighting of the landmark Pyramids of Giza near the Egyptian capital. The scenery along the route is exceptional, too, with palm trees, green spaces and mini oases dotted in between the yellow-hued rock.

From £6,995pp, including 12 nights’ accommodation, 30 meals (including unlimited local beer and wine) return flights from London Heathrow, domestic flights within Egypt and activities in each of the 10 destinations. Departing regularly from September 2024 to April 2025.

The Rhine is the busiest waterway in Europe

Exploring this land of castles and fairytales is a worthwhile European trip, with tours often starting in the pretty Dutch capital of Amsterdam and weaving across the German and French countryside, with the route broken up by cities such as Cologne, Dusseldorf and Strasbourg. Many of the towns located on the banks of the Rhine, such as Koblenz, are incredibly picturesque, with a range of medieval castles and natural sites like the Black Forest also featuring.

Ama Waterways provide a seven-night cruise that runs from Basel to Amsterdam. Get your cultural fix at either end of your trip in either of these two cities, before admiring the vistas around the Rhine Valley, the medieval castles that loom over towns like Heidelberg and the timber-framed buildings that line the streets of Riquewihr and Strasbourg. Stops in both Freiburg and Dusseldorf are also included, as well as an optional excursion to Cologne.

From £2,399pp, including seven nights’ accommodation, full board and tours in each destination. Departing regularly between 18 February and 28 December 2024.

The Douro Valley is supposedly the oldest demarcated wine-growing region in the world

The views around the Douro Valley are some of the best in Portugal , whether you’re sitting by the banks in Porto or admiring the verdant hills and vineyards around Pinhao. This region, well-known for its port production, has cruises lasting roughly one week that usually begin and end in Porto – where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean – with a brief crossing over into Spain and Salamanca.

The Riviera Travel package offers an affordable eight-day Douro option starting and ending in Porto , with two nights to explore Portugal’s magnificent second city (and to go on a guided tour of a well-known port producer). Days three and four take you to sleepy Castelo de Rodrigo and the historic Spanish city of Salamanca (with guided tours and time to explore at your leisure) before traversing the cascading vineyards of the valley on your way back to Porto via the beautiful Peso de Regua (and a local wine tasting).

From £1,599pp, including seven nights’ accommodation, full board, flights from a London airport, one excursion one each day and airport transfers. Departing regularly from 7 April 2024.

The Mississippi

At least 260 species of fish – 25 per cent of all fish species in North America – live in the Mississippi River

Discovering the Deep South is often done by car, but with new routes recently from Viking Cruises, exploring Louisiana, Mississippi, Minnesota and Tennessee has never been more idyllic. The famed cities of New Orleans and Memphis can bookend your tour, with lesser-known locations such as Baton Rouge, Natchez and Darrow making up the other stops.

Opt for Viking’s ‘Heart of the Delta’ cruise to if you really want to immerse yourself in the Deep South. The cruise begins with a few days exploring the French influences and Creole cuisine of New Orleans , before moving on to Baton Rouge – a haven of Creole and Cajun culture – and then onto Natchez, the oldest city on the river. You’ll travel through other towns on the Mississippi – complete with walking tours or excursions to the Atchafalaya Swamp basin – before reaching Memphis, the atmospheric home of blues music.

From £6,545pp, including 12 nights’ accommodation, full board, return flights from London and one excursion per destination. Departing weekly from March 7 until 13 June, with additional departures on 7 November and 13 November.

The Mekong River is also known as the “Mother of Water”

The Mekong flows through a host of Asia’s most fascinating countries, including Vietnam , Thailand , China and Cambodia. Most cruises only take in parts of Vietnam and Cambodia , though this mix of floating fishing villages, traditional markets and the two capitals of Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh will be enough for most travellers. With Avalon Waterways , you’ll combine energetic, modern cities with some of the most vibrant culture in Asia and a history that is equal parts sobering and fascinating.

It starts in Siem Reap, site of the Angkor Wat temple, before moving on to the Cambodian capital, where you can learn about the dictatorship of Pol Pot and visit several must-see landmarks.
