Professional "stitching" by Riksja Travel

Riksja and Encounter Latin America stitched our Peru destinations seamlessly together. Really amazing! The hotels and guides were great. We -a 2 person party- did a 3 1/2 weeks highlights tour through southern Peru. Variety and colorful. Friendly people, fine cuisine!

Extending, amazing NEW ZEALAND

Beautiful Thailand trip

Beautiful Thailand trip. From February 12 to 29, 2024 we took a trip through Thailand via Riksja Travel. we are 4 retired people over 75 years old. We enjoyed it immensely and all agreements that Riksja Travel made for us were fulfilled excellently. we really have nothing to complain about. the people who arranged for us through Riksja Travel and Khiri Travel were all very friendly and helpful people. in particular the staff of the On on hotel in Phuket (Yaya and Janie) took good care of us in the last few days. In short, we had a great time and an unforgettable holiday. we will recommend it to everyone.

Great 8 day trip to Egypt

We just returned from a great 8 day trip to Egypt and we are spoiled for ever: all went so smoothly. The very knowledgeable guides were there where they had to be. The safe drivers with their clean and comfortable vans were able to pick us up and drop us off at the right time and place (while we could leave our valuables in the van). As organiser of the 6 persons trip, I could really relax myself as well. We once had been dropped off at the wrong hotel, but the local and Dutch team responded within minutes and solved the issue even better than we expected. I really consider a trip again with Riksja next time.

Superb trip to Vietnam

We had great 18 days of holidays in Vietnam. We started 27/12 dec. in Hanoi and ended on Phu Quoc island on 14/1. This was a superb timing to visit this country, we had only 1 day of some rain and temperatures were not that high. Riksja and their colleagues from local agent, Asian Trails, desreve compliments for all their contribution ( choices of hotels, guides and execution). We intend to spend our next holidays with Riksja.

Great trip experiences for many years

Very competent contact persons with the very good know-how of the local environment / land and situation in there let us plan our trips comfortably and individual for many years / trips now. Again, the availability of the contact person (this time Vincent de Kolf) and flexibility of the planning will end up in hopefully a great trip. Very good price / value range for the proposed packages. Very good data management, e.g. possibility to come back to previous proposals.

We booked a trip to Japanve

We booked a trip to Japan. They offered great suggestions and catered to our wishes and offered an amazing time. They planned everything out which meant we could sit back and enjoy our holiday. The team is very friendly and were always available for questions and feedback. The only criticism I have is how all information was shared with us over various emails - this meant I had to spend a lot of time in putting all this information into one concise document. Hopefully they can develop an app in the future which their customers can use to find all relevant information.

Positieve experiences in Jordan

We really enjoyed travelling with Riksja (25M and 24F). Definitely would advise using a travel agency in Jordan. Riksja is a safe and cheap option. We did not have any troubles during our trip and did memorable things almost constantly. There were some hotels that were less spacious/luxurious (we were informed about this on forehand) so if you are looking for a luxurious type of holiday this might not be for you.

Great holiday in Jordanië

We travelled to Jordanie with Riksja Travel. Well organized thanks to Atlas Travel. A nice program thanks to Riksja! The whats app while traveling is a nice to have. We had to contact riksja while during our trip while there was a misunderstanding about arranging accommodation. We also felt that accommodation @wadi Musa (Petra) was poor. And last but not least it is important that riksja or atlas let hotels know when there is a family with children coming. We could have had family rooms in several hotels. Misted opportunity. Riksja did what they had to do and so did atlas. Overall we have had a wonderful holiday with so much highlights!!

a fantastic 2 week vacation in Costa Rica

We had a fantastic 2 week vacation in Costa Rica thanks to the great organisation of Riksja Travel. Everything was perfectly organised; nice tours, beautiful hotels, a very nicely timed planning in this gourgeous country. We saw turtles lay eggs, we had nice boat and walking tours through the jungle, we did some nice diving and saw sharks, we went to the cloud forest, saw sloths, toucans, we experienced how coffee chocolate and cane sugar is processed, saw beautiful beaches, did some surfing in the nicest surfing sea waves of the world. Everything was exceptionally wel organised (except for the weather as we had a lot of tropical rain). Thanks to the Costa Rica team of Riksja travel!

We opted for a private trip in Egypt

We opted for a private trip in Egypt. This went fantastic. What we liked the most was the caring attitude of our various guides. I felt very spoiled during the holiday. Everything went on time, and everything was arranged for us. Overall a great experience, we would decently do it this way again next time. Great trip in South Africa

We had a great trip in South Africa, very well organized by Riksja, with our family with two kids 16 and 18. Both in planning and the actual trip they were very good advisers. We had great stays in B&Bs, very comfortable, some on stunning locations, although load shedding did not always help. The booked excursions were good! And there was plenty of time for us to organise our own activities and plan some relax time. Also , during the trip we got some nice advices from Tess via app. We would certainly recommend Riksja to others for South Africa.

New Zeeland we fell in love with you!…

What a fantastic trip and we are very pleased with Riksja. When we talked with otter people on oir trip, we felt blessed we were with Riksja🫶The hotels, the trips, the guides. All so well organized! And on top op that, we were accompanied by Tess… she gave us all kinds of useful tips (restaurants, tours, sites) via app at the time we were in a certain place. We were counting on her! 3 week Mexico road trip with Riksja Travel

Riksja Travel arranged a 3 week roundtrip through the Southeast of Mexico for us per rental car. Everything was well planned including some excursions. In terms of driven km’s it was quite intense, but it took us to amazing places that allowed us to experience real Mexico and the Mexicans. Communication and support during the booking process was good. During our trip per destination via Whatsapp we received tips of possible sites we could visit, activities to do and restaurants to enjoy. We were also able to ask for more tips or additional info. We enjoyed this service!

Positive emotions visiting Norway

The trip to Norway was really beautiful. The hotels arranged were in nice locations and easy to reach by car. Breakfasts were in all hotels very good, which helped for a good start of the day. One challenge was that quite some driving needed to be done. However overall it was a positive emotional holiday.

Jordan was a great experience. Riksja was so so

Jordan was a great experience. Their local agent Atlas Travel were very attentive and flexible. Riksja were available via WhatsApp but often referred me to phone the Netherlands (which is very expensive from overseas) Their initial booking process was quick but the person involved left the company and I needed to escalate to get vouchers etc. The hotel choices they had for Dubai stopover was poor and out of town so I sorted that out myself in Old Dubai which saved taxi fares. Trip to Jerash was good but could have been done without a tour guide. Accommodation at Petra and Camping at Wadi Rum were the highlights and made the trip worth while (especially camping under the stars) Amman could have been skipped to be honest and Dead Sea Resort was thankfully one night (there's not much to do)

Our 5th trip anniversary with Riksja

Our 5th trip with Riksja and again very well organized. We stayed in nice, small hotels in great locations. Also the local agent in Mexico, Solana, deserves a big compliment. They know their way in Mexico and responded quickly if we had questions. The whatsapp help "tess" was new and also a nice extra service.

Mixed experiences sadly

Mixed experiences sadly. Was expecting them to come up with some nice fitting accommodations. But most of them were poorly, boring and some even filthy (even taking into account the post-COVID dust). Not worth the €216 you pay them for driver and hotels, especially when going to a reasonable priced country as Sri Lanka.

Wonderful Roadtrip USA

We went on a roadtrip on motorcycles in the USA with a group of 8 friends. We had chosen our itinerary ourselves and asked Riksja to book the flights and the hotels on the road. They did a great job. The 11(!) hotels were nice and their location wonderful. There was always a possibility to park our motorcycles and almost every hotel served a good breakfast. In case the hotel didn’t provide breakfast, there were lots of places in the surroundings of the hotel to choose from. The communication with Riksja was excellent and accurate. The Whatsapp-service really added value to our trip. We had booked our rental bikes ourselves, because Riksja can only arrange rental cars. That would have made it perfect, but nonetheless we can recommend Riksja for a 100%!

Some of the best places to visit in Scotland will be instantly familiar to anyone who’s ever gazed at a whisky label or shortbread tin. Think dramatic peaks, lonely glens, lochs, tartan and haggis!

From spectacular Skye and historic Edinburgh to the rolling rivers of Speyside, Scotland’s big sights are as glorious as you’d imagine. But scratch the surface of this proud nation and you’ll find a varied and engrossing place, dotted with prehistoric villages, wild clubs, rich seafood and ruined abbeys.

So, where to start? Once you've decided on the best time for your visit , you need to decide on the best places to go while you're there. Here is our pick of the best destinations in Scotland to get you started.

1. Edinburgh

Best place for year-round entertainment

Scotland's capital may be famous for its festivals, but there's much more to the city than that. Edinburgh is a place of many moods: visit in spring to see the Old Town silhouetted against a blue sky and a yellow haze of daffodils, or on a chill winter’s day for fog snagging the spires of the Royal Mile, rain on the cobblestones, and a warm glow beckoning from the windows of local pubs. With a world-class modern art gallery , top museums , spooky historic sites and a majestic 12th-century castle , there's plenty to keep you entertained whatever the season.

Local tip: Start your visit to Edinburgh with a climb up Arthur's Seat , an extinct volcano for panoramic views over the city.

2. West Highland Way

Best place for long-distance hiking

The best way to really get inside Scotland's landscapes is to walk them. Here, peaks tower over lochs and sea cliffs gaze over the wind-whipped sea, but there are short woodland trails and charming strolls through valleys dusted with purple heather, too. Top of the wish list for many hikers is the 96-mile West Highland Way from Milngavie (near Glasgow) to Fort William , a weeklong walk through some of the country's finest scenery, finishing in the shadow of its highest peak, Ben Nevis.

If you don’t have the time or energy for a long-distance trek, it's possible to do just a day's hike along part of the trail. For example, you could walk the section from Rowardennan to Inversnaid, returning to your starting point using the Loch Lomond waterbus . Whichever section you take on, pack waterproofs and midge repellent. Rail lovers should note that sleeper trains run south from Fort William all the way to London, making for an easy exit after a walk.

Detour:  The 1,345m (4,413ft) summit of Ben Nevis is within reach of anyone who's reasonably fit: treat the peak with respect and your reward (weather permitting) will be magnificent views that can stretch as far as Northern Ireland.

3. North Coast 500

Best place for a scenic road trip

Breathtaking views abound in the Highlands , but the far north is where things become truly awe-inspiring. This is the best place in Scotland to explore by car (you can also cycle it), with some of the finest roadside scenery in Europe.

The North Coast 500 starts and ends in the likable city of Inverness , and loops past the lochs, sand dunes and golf courses of the east coast before taking in the remote cliffs and beaches of Cape Wrath, the rugged peaks of Assynt and Torridon’s desolate beauty. These sights, and the nooks of warm Highland hospitality found in the region's classic rural pubs and old crofting villages, make this an unforgettable weeklong tour.

4. Isle of Skye

Best place for photographers

In a country famous for stunning scenery, the Isle of Skye takes the top prize. From the craggy peaks of the Cuillins and the bizarre pinnacles of the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing to the spectacular sea cliffs of Neist Point, there's a photo opportunity awaiting you at almost every turn.

Skye is also one of the best places in Scotland to see golden eagles, and you’ll find convivial pubs and top seafood restaurants if you can tear your eyes from the natural world. Of course, all this tourist appeal makes Skye one of Scotland's most popular destinations. The crowds tend to stick to Portree , Dunvegan and Trotternish – it’s almost always possible to find peace and quiet in the island’s further-flung corners.

Planning tip:  Come prepared for changeable weather – when it’s fine, it’s very fine indeed, but all too often it isn’t.

5. Loch Lomond

Best place for a lakeside hike

Despite being less than an hour's drive from the bustle and sprawl of Glasgow, the bonnie braes (banks) of Loch Lomond – immortalized in the words of one of Scotland's best-known songs – comprise one of the most scenic parts of the country.

At the heart of Scotland's first national park , the loch begins as a broad, island-peppered lake in the south, its shores clothed in bluebell-sprinkled woods before narrowing in the north to a fjord-like trench ringed by mountains.

Detour: The summit of Ben Lomond (974m/3,031ft) is a popular climb – follow the well-maintained path for a 7-mile round-trip on the popular Tourist Route (allow around 5 hours).

Best place for live music and pub culture

Scotland's biggest city may lack Edinburgh's stunning setting, but it more than makes up for it with a barrelful of things to do and a warmth and energy that leaves every visitor impressed. Edgy and contemporary, it's a great spot to browse art galleries and museums , and to discover the works of local design hero Charles Rennie Mackintosh .

Glasgow’s infectious vitality is best sampled via its lively pubs and clubs, which host one of the world's great live music scenes.

Local tip:  Check out upcoming (mostly alt-rock) acts at the Barrowland  (crowned the UK's best music venue by Time Out magazine in 2023), a legendary former ballroom, or try the Sub Club for house and techno, the Clutha Bar for roots and rock, or Nice N Sleazy , a classic indie dive.

7. Stirling

Best place for castle fans

With an impregnable position atop a mighty wooded crag – the plug of an extinct volcano – Stirling ’s beautifully preserved Old Town is a treasure trove of historic buildings and cobbled streets winding up to the ramparts of Stirling Castle . This fortress has seen serious action – it was bombarded by the Warwolf, a giant 14th-century English siege engine, and was besieged during the 1745 Jacobite rising, as well as sending troops to the battle of Bannockburn (the decisive battle celebrated at the end of Braveheart ), just a few miles south.

Today, views that stretch to the Highlands, glorious tapestries and juicy history make this Scotland’s best castle – and a great family attraction.

Planning tip:  It's best to visit in the afternoon; many tourists come on day trips, so you may have the castle almost to yourself by 4pm.

8. St Andrews

Best place for golfers

Scotland invented the game of golf, and the city of  St Andrews is still revered as its spiritual home by hackers and champions alike. Links courses are the classic experience here – bumpy coastal affairs where the rough is heather and machair (coastal grass) and the main enemy is the wind, which can make a disaster of a promising round in an instant.

St Andrews, the historic Fife university town, is golf's headquarters , and an irresistible destination for anyone who loves the sport. And if you're not so keen, well, the city has impressive medieval ruins , stately university buildings , idyllic white sands and excellent guesthouses and restaurants .

9. Skara Brae

Best place for lovers of ancient history

When visiting ancient sites, it can sometimes be difficult to bridge the gulf of years or build a connection with the people that built them, but Scotland’s superb prehistoric remains have an immediate impact. Few places offer a better glimpse of everyday Stone Age life than Skara Brae in Orkney  with its carefully constructed fireplaces, beds, cupboards and water cisterns.

This Neolithic village – which, at 5,000 years is older than Stonehenge or the Pyramids of Giza – lay buried in coastal sand dunes for centuries. Even today, it can feel as though the inhabitants have just slipped out to go fishing and could return at any moment.

10. Glen Coe

Best place for clan history

Scotland's most famous glen combines two essential qualities of the Highlands: dramatic scenery and a deep sense of history. The peace and beauty of this valley today belies the fact that Glen Coe was the scene of a ruthless 17th-century massacre, when the local MacDonalds were murdered by soldiers of the Campbell clan.

Some of the glen's finest walks – to the Lost Valley, for example – follow the routes taken by fleeing clanspeople, many of whom perished in the snow.

11. Perthshire

Best place to enjoy nature's bounty

In Perthshire , the heart of Scotland, picturesque towns bloom with flowers, distilleries emit tempting malty odors and sheep graze in impossibly green meadows. There's a feeling of the bounty of nature that no other place in Scotland can replicate.

Blue-gray lochs shimmer, reflecting the changing moods of the weather; centuries-old trees tower amid riverside forests; majestic glens scythe their way into remote wildernesses; and salmon leap upriver to the place of their birth.

12. Shetland Islands

Best place for birdwatching

Close enough to Norway to make Scottish nationality an ambiguous concept, the Shetland Islands are Britain’s most northerly outpost. The stirringly bleak setting – recognized as a precious UNESCO geopark – still feels uniquely Scottish though, with deep, naked glens flanked by steep hills, twinkling, sky-blue lochs and, of course, wandering sheep on the little-trafficked roads. It's the birdlife, however, that really draws visitors here.

From their first arrival in late spring to the raucous feeding frenzies of high summer, the vast colonies of gannets, guillemots, skua, puffins and kittiwakes at Hermaness , Noss, Sumburgh Head and Fair Isle provide some of Britain's most impressive birdwatching experiences.

Local tip: Shetland is one of the best places in the UK to spot orcas (and the Northern Lights).

13. Speyside

Best place for whisky tasting

Scotland's national drink is whisky – from the Gaelic uisge beatha , meaning “water of life” – and this fiery spirit has been distilled here for more than 500 years. More than 50 distilleries are in operation in Speyside, Scotland's most famous whisky area, famed for fruity, lightly spicy flavors (head over to Islay for peatier varieties).

Ask at the Whisky Museum about the Malt Whisky Trail, a self-guided tour around the local distilleries. If you just have time for one, the Balvenie Distillery is a good bet as it still uses a traditional malting floor – the smell is glorious!

Planning tip:  Dufftown lies at the heart of the region and is host to the biannual Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival.

14. The Scotland Borders

Best place for a country ramble

Many visitors to Scotland race up to Edinburgh and then hightail it to the Highlands, missing the Scottish Borders entirely . That's their loss. Once fought over by war chiefs and cattle thieves, the Borders region is rich in history and packed with good cycling and hiking routes.

There are grand country houses, too – Traquair House brews Jacobite Ale and has a concealed room that once hid Catholic priests – and a series of gorgeous ruined abbeys – Gothic Melrose Abbey is the best – plus birds and sea cliffs at St Abb’s Head. More active types can fish for salmon or thunder down the mountain bike trails at Glentress and Innerleithen.

With its stately castles , glass-like lochs, and voluptuous glens, Scotland has always been a showstopper. The country's magic extends from its quaint small towns to the snow-capped peaks of its romantic, rugged Highlands to its dynamic modern cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh. It's home to some of the best national parks in the U.K. and more than 900 offshore islands with extraordinary wildlife like regal red stags, majestic golden eagles, humpback whales, and massive salmon (not to mention the fabled inhabitant of Loch Ness, too).

The raw, poetic beauty of this ancient land — formerly known as Caledonia — is difficult to overstate. If you're hoping to head to the U.K.'s ravishing northern nation, read on for our guide to planning the perfect Scotland vacation.

The bad news is that, like the rest of the U.K., Scotland's weather is far from reliable, even at the height of summer. But as long as you're prepared to accept that and pack a raincoat for the odd shower or two, then you'll be fine from May to September. The smart money is on visiting in June and the first two weeks of July, when Scotland basks in seemingly endless summer evenings (the sun doesn't set until 11 p.m. in some parts of the Highlands) and the British school holidays have not yet begun, so prices remain low.

For winter travelers, Scotland has the U.K.'s best ski resort at Cairngorm Mountain , while the capital, Edinburgh, hosts one of the world's biggest New Year's Eve parties, Hogmanay .

If you like the great outdoors, you'll love Scotland. It's an ideal place for hiking, biking, and generally embracing the wildly beautiful landscape. You can summit magnificent Ben Nevis in a day (the tallest mountain in the U.K., at 4,413 feet), take a ferry out to explore the Hebrides archipelago and its stunning white-sand beaches, tour scores of castles, including the Queen's favorite holiday home, Balmoral (open to the public every April through July), and dive into a quirky food scene encompassing dishes like haggis (an offal and oatmeal combo, which tastes significantly better than it sounds), deep-fried mars bars, and juicy scallops, langoustines, and mussels.

Scotland is also a mecca for both golfers ( St. Andrews Old Course is the headline act) and whisky lovers , with some of the world's best distilleries available to tour, including Johnnie Walker on Edinburgh's lively Princes Street, Glenlivet near pretty Ballindalloch, and the legendary Macallan on a sprawling country estate in nearby Aberlour.

If you enjoy driving, you'll find some of the U.K.'s emptiest, most dramatic roads here, too, (as driven by James Bond in "Skyfall"), including the latest official addition, the North Coast 500 , an action-packed 500-mile route (516 to be exact) featuring mind-boggling coastal scenery, jaw-dropping beaches, rolling hillside, quaint fishing villages, and multiple hidden gems.

And if you prefer your challenges on foot, check out the magnificent West Highland Way , the country's best-loved long-distance walking route. Snaking its way from Milngavie to Fort William, it covers some of Scotland's finest scenery over 96 miles and is normally completed from south to north.

Meanwhile, history buffs will also be agog on any visit to Scotland, thanks to its 3,000-plus castles ( Castle Sween in Argyll is the oldest, dating back to the 1100s), as well as plenty to check out in the winding wynds (narrow lanes) and twisted staircases of Edinburgh's enchanting Old Town. ( Edinburgh Castle , towering over the city, is arguably the grandest in the country, too.)

If you can, make time to visit Perth, the former Scottish capital where kings were crowned on the Stone of Destiny and infamous Glen Coe, a beautiful valley full of waterfalls and deer, also known for the brutal clan massacre of 1692 (which inspired the Red Wedding in George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones ).

Dé bestemmingen binnen Europa voor jouw ideale rondreis

Je hoeft niet altijd ver weg om je in een totaal andere wereld te wanen. Europa telt tal van geheime parels. In het zuiden vind je verlaten baaien langs de kusten van Portugal , Kroatië en Griekenland . Hier barbecue je op een onbewoond eiland en slaap je in een voormalige olijfmolen. In het koele noorden spot je walvissen en bewonder je een gletsjer van binnen in IJsland of Noorwegen en ga je op husky-sledetocht of kruip je onder een rendiervacht in een heus ijshotel in Lapland . Canarische eilanden

Van vulkanen en canyons tot schattige dorpjes met gekleurde huizen en sinaasappelbomen. Loop over kilometerslange wandelpaden met briljante uitzichten of ontspan op de stranden van een van de baaien die je met bijna niemand hoeft te delen. Extra leuk is om van het ene eiland naar naar het ander te ‘hoppen’.

Dit mooie eiland ligt vlakbij Griekenland en heeft een mix van Turkse en Griekse invloeden. Met de authentieke bergdorpen, Romeinse opgravingen, oude havenstadjes, heerlijke keuken en mooie zandstranden is het een heel fijn vakantie-eiland. En niet onbelangrijk, je kunt het hele jaar rond van Cyprus genieten van de fijne temperaturen.

Dit meest zuidelijke land van Scandinavië kent hippe steden, sfeervolle vikingsdorpen en een indrukwekkende kustlijn. Een toffe bestemming als je opzoek bent naar weidse natuur, brede stranden en leuke activiteiten. En wat ook erg leuk is: het combineren van Denemarken met Zweden of Noorwegen!

Griekenland is bonkig en ongeraffineerd. Hier vind je middeleeuwse dorpen, een diepgroen binnenland, knusse landhuizen, verlaten baaien en velden bezaaid met sinaasappelbomen. Het zeegevoel is alom aanwezig: in de blauw-witte huisjes op Santorini, in de vissersbootjes langs de kust, maar ook in culturele gewoontes als het smijten met servies op een bruiloft.

Op reis leer je vanzelf mee te genieten, of je nu naar het groene Toscane gaat of het relaxte Puglia.

Kroatië en Slovenië

Rijk is niet alleen de Kroatische cultuur, maar ook de natuur met groenblauwe meren en watervallen, een azuurblauwe zee en meer dan 1000 eilanden. Proef letterlijk van het lokale leven tijdens een diner bij locals thuis en zoek het avontuur op en ga raften, suppen of fietsen. Puur vakantie op Sicilië ! Op het grootste eiland in de Middellandse Zee is genoeg te beleven. Een wijnproeverij aan de voet van de Etna, een kookworkshop op het platteland en zwemmen in verborgen baaien aan de oostkust met helderblauw water. En ‘s avonds geniet je van de Siciliaanse keuken; Italiaans maar met Spaanse, Griekse, Franse en Arabische invloeden.

Spanje is temperamentvol, gepassioneerd en warm. Temperament komt je overal tegen, mét liefde voor de kleine dingen. Dat voel je ook tijdens een praatje met de vriendelijke eigenaar van je B&B. ‘Gewoon ergens slapen’ verandert in bijzonder overnachten waarbij je zeker thuiskomt met het warme Spaanse gevoel. Zo reis je naar het geliefde vakantieland op een unieke manier.

Algemene informatie over Europa

De Europese bestemmingen liggen om de hoek, maar zijn toch zo divers als het maar zijn kan. Dat is ook niet zo gek, als je bedenkt dat op het Europese continent maar liefst 11% van de totale wereldbevolking leeft. En dat terwijl we het op één na kleinste werelddeel zijn (op Oceanië na). Het zuiden van Europa kent een mediterraan klimaat, terwijl het noorden een poolklimaat kent. Toch is een land als IJsland ook in de zomer prima te bereizen. Waar Nederland vlak is en vooral steden, strand, weilanden en bossen kent, vind je in andere Europese landen bergen, kliffen, wijnvalleien, eilanden in het zuiden en vulkanen, gletsjers, watervallen en geisers in het noorden. Daarmee is Europa vrijwel net zo gevarieerd als Azië of Latijns-Amerika.

We hebben de mooiste reisroutes alvast voor je samengesteld, maar je hebt de vrijheid om nog een nacht toe te voegen of een gave activiteit in je reis op te nemen. We zijn op zoek gegaan naar kleinschalige accommodaties en gave activiteiten, waar je de mensen leert kennen en de sfeer van het land proeft. We werken samen met lokale partners, die jou ter plaatse indien nodig met raad en daad bijstaan. Zo reis je wel individueel, maar sta je er nooit alleen voor.

– De retourvlucht naar je bestemming. Wij zoeken graag bijpassende vluchten voor je op die aansluiten op je reisplan. Dit kan onder andere vanaf Amsterdam, Brussel of Düsseldorf. – Optionele excursies. – Reserveringskosten € 25,00 p.p. (maximaal € 75,00 per boeking) en calamiteitenfonds € 2,50 per boeking.

Dat verschilt per land. De beste reistijd voor Griekenland is van april tot en met oktober, met een gemiddelde temperatuur van 25 graden. Het klimaat in Portugal is tijdens de lente en de herfst het meest aangenaam, met temperaturen tussen de 18 en 25 graden. Door de ligging aan Atlantische Oceaan koelt het ’s avonds iets af, maar je kunt nog steeds lekker buiten dineren.

In IJsland schommelt de temperatuur in de zomer tussen de 10 en 14 graden. Daarmee is het vergelijkbaar met onze herfst. In juni, juli en augustus heb je de meeste kans op heldere en zonnige dagen. Liever naar de kou? De beste reistijd om door het winterwonderland van Lapland te crossen is van half januari tot en met eind maart.

Het staat hoog op de verlanglijst van menig reiziger: het Noorderlicht spotten. Zo ook bij jou? Dan zijn Lapland en IJsland dé bestemmingen waar je naartoe moet. De beste tijd om het Noorderlicht te spotten is tussen oktober en maart. Dan zijn de nachten langer en de kou zorgt voor minder waterdamp, waardoor de lucht helder is.

Tijdens je Europa-reis, reis je voornamelijk individueel. De excursies die in het programma verwerkt zijn zullen soms individueel zijn en deze kunnen soms met een internationaal gezelschap zijn. Uiteraard ga je na de excursie weer je eigen weg.

Ter plaatse werken wij samen met een lokale partner. Zij zijn 24 uur per dag bereikbaar mocht er iets zijn ter plaatse. Ook hebben wij in Nederland een collega stand-by 24 uur per dag. Mocht er iets zijn, kun je dus altijd of de lokale agent ter plaatse of ons in Nederland bereiken.

Het is mogelijk aanpassingen in de Scandinavië-rondreizen te maken. Misschien wil je liever een ander hotel of ergens een nacht langer of korter blijven. Geef dit even aan als je een reisvoorstel aanvraagt; we zullen dan een aangepaste prijsopgave doen. Er zijn zeer veel verschillende combinaties mogelijk en we adviseren je graag. Beoordelingen van Riksja Travel

Slechte communicatie.

We hebben met onze 2 kleine kinderen een mooie reis naar Indonesie gemaakt via Riksja. We waren goed ontvangen in Leiden en hebben een prettig gesprek gehad. Helaas ging het vanaf daar bergafwaarts. De reisinformatie kwam erg laat, we moesten zelf achter de vouchers en vliegtickets aan, waardoor de voorpret er niet echt was. De reis zelf was mooi, maar voldeed helaas niet aan de verwachtingen: hotels waren veelal matig, soms slecht. Activiteiten waren niet op (kleine) kinderen afgestemd, soms zaten we dusdanig afgelegen dat we ook echt niets konden doen met de kinderen. Lokale partner heeft ons waar mogelijk geholpen, maar kon ook niet alles doen. Wat helemaal onhandig was, was dat we een reisschema kregen waar niet alles in stond. 1 activiteit ontbrak in dat schema, en daar was ook geen vervoer voor geregeld, terwijl we (dus met 2 kleine kinderen) blijkbaar een uur hadden moeten reizen nog. We hebben deze activiteit helaas moeten missen. Ik heb eea voorgelegd na afloop van de reis, en helaas schuiven ze alles terug op ons. Dat ze wel alles hebben gecommuniceerd en dat het mijn schuld is dat ik een activiteit heb gemist. Helaas ontbreekt het bij Riksja aan zelfreflectie en verantwoordelijkheid nemen. Van een reisbureau dat zich specialiseert in reizen met (jonge) kinderen, en van een reis die niet goedkoop is, verwacht ik meer. Zowel vooraf, als gedurende, als na afloop van de reis. Nogmaals: mooie reis gehad, maar nooit meer ga ik dat via Riskja boeken. Communicatie moet echt (veel) beter.

Prima reis, goede opbouw en mooi land

Op zich was de reis zelf prima georganiseerd. Er is goed geluisterd naar onze wensen vooraf en we zijn erg tevreden over het reisprogramma en de opbouw van de reis. We begonnen in hele rustige en niet toeristische dorpen op Sumatra en naarmate de reis vorderde kwamen we steeds meer in bewoond gebied (Bali). Het sloot volledig aan bij onze wensen dus daar waren we erg blij mee. Een aantal accommodaties viel helaas wel erg tegen. Er zaten veel 'vergane glorie' accommodaties tussen en een aantal was zelfs ronduit smerig te noemen (lees; schimmel op de muren, overal scheuren en heel veel plekken waar niet werd schoongemaakt). Ook de service van de lokale agency (Happy Trails) liet te wensen over. Tot 2x toe bijna een uur te laat opgehaald door een chauffeur, zonder communicatie. De assistentie vanuit Riskja viel ons ook een beetje tegen. Een week voordat we weg gingen hebben we nog gevraagd of er wel een autostoeltje voor onze baby was geregeld, dat bleek niet het geval. Volgens de Riskja medewerker zou dit 'te duur' zijn om te huren(?) Na veel wikken en wegen zijn we zonder autostoeltje op pad gegaan, maar na een aantal helse reizen met een krijsende baby op schoot waren we er helemaal klaar mee. We kwamen een ander gezin tegen dat ook via Riskja Family reisde die ons doodleuk vertelden dat zij wel gewoon een stoeltje hadden (en een vaste chauffeur) en dat dat helemaal niet belachelijk duur was. Alsnog Riskja gebeld om een autostoeltje voor ons te regelen: daar moesten we dan zelf maar achteraan gaan bij Happy Trails. Na een telefoontje aan Happy Trails kregen we te horen dat ze het zouden afstemmen met Riskja, met andere woorden van het kastje naar de muur gestuurd. Uiteindelijk na een paar dagen een autostoeltje gekregen, helaas was het toen bijna niet meer nodig omdat we de grootste reisafstanden en reisdagen al gehad hadden... Op Sumatra hebben we 5 dagen lang dezelfde chauffeur gehad. Op Bali hadden we iedere dag een ander, sommige spraken amper Engels. Je bouwt op die manier totaal geen band op met iemand en ze zijn er alleen om je van A naar B te brengen, verwacht geen extra toelichting Al met al redelijk tevreden over de reis zelf, maar minder over de service van Riskja Family (en Happy Trails) ook de accommodaties zijn van erg slecht niveau voor de prijs die je ervoor betaald.

Overweldigend mooie reis gehad!

Op maat gemaakte rondreis is ons zeer bevallen, natuurlijk hielp het prachtige ( maar wel bitterkoude) weer ook mee aan fenomenale uitzichten en een geweldig noorderlicht , drie nachten achtereen. Genieten van de geboekte activiteiten, reisbeschrijving bijna altijd duidelijk, en anders reageerde Tess, onze reisleider via whatsapp heel snel. Kortom een onvergetelijke vakantie, we gaan graag opnieuw met Riksja op reis.

Fantastische reis

We zijn net terug van een fantastische reis door IJsland. Erg leuke hotels maar vooral geweldige excursies meegemaakt. Riksja heeft de reis helemaal opmaat gemaakt en sloot precies aan bij wat we leuk vinden. Volgende reis zeker weer bij Riksja

Nooit meer Riksja!

Nooit meer Riksja! Afgelopen zomer hebben we via Riksja twee weken door Griekenland gereisd met onze drie tieners. Wat ging niet goed of was niet goed? - een verkeerde locatie was aan ons doorgegeven als vertrekpunt voor onze wandeltoer door Athene met alle gevolgen van dien - een kookworkshop bij een hotel die niet op de hoogte was. Dit had vooraf gereserveerd moeten worden, in tegenstelling tot de info van Riksja in de app - drie dagen geen WiFi en geen 4/5G bij onze accommodatie op Lefkas en zeer onvriendelijke eigenaar. De deur opendoen van je appartement en zeggen: any questions? En vertrokken was de man - het zeekayakken op Kefalonia (waarvoor we speciaal naar dit eiland gingen, keuze van onze tieners) bleek niet gereserveerd - om fietsen te huren moesten we eerst een autorit van drie kwartier maken (wat we uiteindelijk hebben gecanceld) - hotelkamers naast elkaar? Geen één keer, zelfs verschillende verdiepingen. Je zou maar jonge kinderen hebben… dan is dit echt niet fijn! - Riksja adviseerde om niet één overnachting in Dimitsana te doen maar twee ivm het raften. Dan konden we op dag één raften en op dag twee rustig onze reis vervolgen. Aangekomen in Dimitsana bleek het raften op dag twee gepland…. Dit was ons niet verteld. Als we dat hadden geweten hadden we gewoon hier één nacht verbleven - de route naar onze laatste bestemming bleek een route over niet bestaande wegen te zijn waardoor we met onze huurauto op onmogelijke hellingen in z’n achteruit weer terug moesten. Drama! Hier was niet over nagedacht door Riksja. - prijs/kwaliteit is niet in verhouding - hotels op verre afstand van activiteiten waardoor je (onnodig) veel moet rijden Voor ons een grote teleurstelling! Na een mail met onze klachten te hebben verstuurd werd ons aangeboden de fietshuur terug te betalen en een extra tegemoetkoming van 50,- op een vakantie van bijna 9000,-. Dus…. bezint eer ge aan Riksja begint!

Prachtige en zeer goed georganiseerde rondreis Marokko

We hebben een uitstekende vakantie gehad in Marokko De wijze waarop Riksja en Orion (lokale partner) alles hebben georganiseerd en waar nodig aangepast op onze wensen en a.g.v. geannuleerde vluchten verdient echt een groot compliment. Alles prima geregeld en we zijn erg blij met de geboekte riads/hotels. Prima keuzes, ook met het warme zomerweer. Kortom: erg tevreden!

Goede ervaring met Riksja Travel naar Portugal. Alles goed geregeld en voldeed aan alle verwachtingen. Vooral de hotels waren verrassend leuk. Volgende keer voor ons weer met Riksja want service is boven gemiddeld hoog.

Prachtige rondreis door Kroatie met Riksja Travel

We zijn al eens met Riksja naar een bestemming buiten Europa geweest en dat was een fijne ervaring. Nu met Riksja naar Kroatië. Het was allemaal weer perfect geregeld. Onze wensen zijn goed vertaald naar een reis die voldeed aan onze verwachtingen. Ondanks de Coronatijd waar we inzitten waren we écht op reis. De hotels zijn mooi en liggen op de fijnste plekjes. Kroatie was wel erg druk deze zomer maar het lukte goed om bij de drukke plekken weg te blijven. Ik zou Riksja zeker ook aanraden, wij zijn nu bezig met een reis naar Griekenland via Riksja voor komende zomer.

Top ervaring

Super fijne ervaring gehad met Riksja Travel naar Griekenland afgelopen zomer. We hebben met een huurauto rond gereisd en in super leuke hotels geslapen. Top service en goeie adviezen. Daarom zijn we nu bezig om Thailand te boeken voor komende zomer. Gelukkig met flex voorwaarden. Succes Riksja met de uitdagingen

Vertrouwen komt te voet en gaat te paard.

Twee jaar terug hebben wij via Riksja een reis naar Zuid-Afrika gemaakt. Zowel de reis zelf als het contact en de klantvriendelijkheid waren perfect! Dit jaar zijn we door de Covid situatie via Riksja naar Kroatië en Slovenië geweest. Wat viel dat tegen. Accommodaties benedenmaats en regelmatig foutieve informatie en/of slecht gemanagede verwachtingen. Zaken die een reisorganisatie hoort te weten. Zoals een accomodatie die besluit geen ontbijt te serveren, zonder enige ontbijtmogelijkheden in de omgeving. Of een activiteit die in de praktijk niet is zoals beloofd. Maar wellicht nog het meest teleurstellende is dat wij een vrij uitgebreide feedback / klachtenemail hebben gestuurd en hier geen enkele reactie op hebben ontvangen. Waar Riksja bij de Zuid-Afrika reis 2 jaar terug zélf pro-actief om feedback vroeg. Het vertrouwen is hiermee zwaar beschadigd en dit is de laatste keer geweest dat wij met Riksja reizen. Waar wij na de voorgaande reis nog veel mond-op-mond reclame voor Riksja hebben gemaakt, waarschuwen wij nu juist tégen deze organisatie. Vertrouwen komt te voet en gaat te paard.

Een ervaring voor het leven

Onze vijfde reis via Riksja. Jordanië, Marokko, Cuba en Costa Rica waren onze vorige bestemmingen Nu hebben wijeen rondreis gemaakt door het zuidelijk gedeelte van Kenia. Een reis die wij met zijn tweeën en een chauffeur gemaakt hebben. De reis was prima geregeld. De overnachtingen voldeden aan de omschrijvingen. De chauffeur deed zijn werk meer dan prima. Zijn credo. Jullie veiligheid is mijn belangrijkste doel. Hij was bekwaam en meegaand. Gaf adviezen en hield rekening met onze wensen. De organisatie ter plekke was bekommerd met ons. Heeft kleine problemen perfect opgelost. Probeerde ook met ons mee te denken. Wij kunnen met een heel goed gevoel terug kijken op een geweldige vakantie in Kenia

Mooie rondreis met veel mooie safarimomenten en bijzondere accommodaties

Dit was onze 3e boeking bij Riksja Travel, na eerdere reizen naar Costa Rica en Zuid-Afrika. De huurauto was, ondanks dat het de goedkoopste categorie was, fantastisch. Volop ruimte voor 2 personen, cruise control en mét service in het geval van een lekke band (waar we gelukkig geen gebruik van hebben hoeven maken, ondanks de vele gravelwegen). Het reistempo was pittig, maar daar hebben we zelf voor gekozen. Als je in 3 weken zowel van Namibië als Botswana een impressie wil krijgen, moet je nou eenmaal flink wat kilometers maken. Er zaten veel bijzondere accommodaties in onze reis, waarvan de unieke lodge middenin de woestijn onze favoriet was. Andere highlights: kajakken tussen tientallen zeehonden, de vele safari’s, een olifant zien zwemmen in Botswana en een dagtrip naar de Victoria watervallen.

Een goed geregelde rondreis (self-drive) van 5 weken over de twee eilanden met prachtige accommodaties. We hebben er enorm van genoten.

We hebben de highlights van het Noorder en Zuidereiland bezocht. De helikoptervlucht en hike op de Gletsjer Fox Clacier, Mildford sound, Tongariro, Mount Cook (tenminste als je goed weer hebt), de whalewatch (Kaikoura) en de Elm wildlife tour (Dunedin) waren absoluut de hoogtepunten. De boottocht bij het Abel Tasmanpark was beduidend minder. En het in "werking" zetten van de Lady Knox geiser. Gelukkig maakte het park met de modderpoelen het weer helemaal goed. Alle wandelingen op beide eilanden zijn fantastisch! Zeker als je van wandelen houdt. De natuur is gewoon geweldig in Nieuw Zeeland. Als je Nieuw Zeeland wilt gaan bekijken, is een self drive rondreis fantastisch. Riksja Reizen heeft dat voor ons echt super geregeld met echt fantastische accommodaties. Het is onbetwist een aanrader!!!!

Mooie 4 daagse safari en aansluitend 4 daagse idyllische strandvakantie in Dianibeach met Riskja

3 Natuurparken: Amboseli, Tsavo East en Tsavo West. Zalig relaxen op het strand van Dianibeach waar we ook konden wandelen, kiten, en snorkelen.

Een geweldige ervaring in Fins Lapland

Het chaletje was een heerlijke plek om te overnachten; het is leuk om in de plaatselijke supermarkten dingen te kopen en zelf te koken, vonden wij. Een prima plaats ook als uitvalsbasis voor de excursies. Het stadje Rovaniemi is klein, dus als je daar een half dagje bent geweest, is het prima. Museum was erg interessant, dat wel. Het ijshotel ah einde vonden we heel leuk maar dan wel de iglos, het hotel zelf, moet je tegen kunnen (koud!) We hebben het noorderlicht kunnen zien, als tip, kijk goed op de locale app, als je 4 of 5 kans hebt, dan zeler de moeite waard de extra excursie te boeken! Geweldig geregeld verder.

Een onvergetelijke reis over het Zuidereiland gemaakt!

Misschien de bekende hoogtepunten, maar dat zíjn ook de hoogtepunten! Abel Tasman National Park, the Pancake Rocks, eigenlijk de hele Great Coast Way, Mt Cook, Banks Peninsula, Kaikoura...enz enz. Wij hadden 2 weken de tijd en hebben nu een goed beeld, maar op sommige plekken zou je gerust langer kunnen verblijven voor meer hikes, activiteiten, en rust! Cardrona Hotel en Silostay waren hoogtepunten van accomodaties. Alle reserveringen van accomodaties, reis, autohuur, roadboek: prima voor elkaar. En persoonlijk!

De gids/chauffeur maakt je reis

De gids/chauffeur blijft tijdens de safari 5 dagen dag en nacht met je optrekken. Je wilt dan ook een expert die zich aanpast aan je wensen. (foto's maken, vogels zien, vroeg vertrekken, laat vertrekken). Extra geld uitgeven aan een goede gids en een goede auto....dat loont.

Individuele rondreis met specifieke wensen met Riskja samengesteld

22 januari 2019 We hebben een individuele rondreis met auto gemaakt, zowel Zuider- als Noorder-eiland, met overnachtingen in Hotels, B&B's of Lodges. In totaal zijn we 3 weken in Nieuw-Zeeland geweest. Onze zoon verblijft inmiddels 7 maanden in Nieuw Zeeland. Hij is zeer enthousiast over het land, zijn enthousiasme en gevoel wilden wij graag met hem delen. Riskja heeft ons uitstekend geholpen om een rondreis te plannen met daarin een bezoek van 2 dagen aan onze zoon en andere specifieke wensen. Het was een fantastische reis. Alles klopte. De afstanden waren prima te doen, goede overnachtingen een uitstekende auto en leuke activiteiten zoals Millford sound, een helikoptervlucht over de gletsjers, walvissen gespot bij Kaikoura, diverse tracks gelopen enz. De natuur is overweldigend maar met name de vriendelijkheid en behulpzaamheid van de Nieuw-Zeelanders is heel bijzonder. Wij kijken terug op een fantastische reis. De contacten met Riskja waren zeer plezierig, korte lijntjes en duidelijke antwoorden op al onze vragen. Volgende keer gaan wij zeker weer met Riskja!!

Goed georganiseerde rondreis

Zeer tevreden over Riskja Travel. Goede voorbereidingen, goede communicatie. Prima reisroute, goede afwisseling tussen hotels en motels. Prettige reisafstanden. Alles, echt alles was erg goed geregeld.

Opnieuw goed geregeld door Riksja

Onze negende reis met Riksja voerde ons dit keer naar Kenia. Opnieuw was het goed georganiseerd en geregeld met de lokale agent. Onze chauffeur deed er werkelijk alles aan om on zo veel en zo mooi mogelijk wild te laten zien. Natuurlijk de Big Five gezien, maar ook enorm grote kuddes in de Masai Mara. De accommodaties waren geweldig, zo goed dat we het soms jammer vonden om er te vertrekken. Op een plek hebben we in de tent geslapen waar Obama destijds ook sliep. Dus dat zegt genoeg. Bijzonder vonden we het ook om in gesprekken met Masai-gidsen wat meer van hun cultuur te leren. Alles klopte met wat we hier in Nederland met Riksja hadden afgesproken. Dus geen verrassingen, in dit opzicht. Maar wel verrassingen qua natuur en cultuur. Onze volgende reis gaat zeker weer met Riksja.

Fantastische rondreis door Tanzania gemaakt: Super begeleiding en maatwerk

We hebben een 8 daagse safari trip gemaakt door het binnenland van Tanzania. Ik ben erg te spreken over de reis, maar ook over de begeleiding en het meedenken vanuit RIksja. We mogen van geluk spreken dat we ook de big 5 volledig hebben gespot, echt een aanrader een Safari via Riksja. Daarna nog een weekje Zanzibar om tot rust te komen, dat is wel erg fijn na de vele indrukken. Al met al weinig feedback of opmerkingen, er is over veel al goed nagedacht.

We hebben met ons gezin een prachtige reis gemaakt. 1e week in Tanzania vaste land met Safari in de Serengeti, onvergetelijk voor onze dochters van 11. 2e week Zanzibar, relaxen, snorkelen en genieten van het heerlijke eten.

Geweldige vakantie gehad in Thailand dankzij Riksja-travel

Riksja dacht mee tijdens plannen van onze reis. Steeds snel een reactie op een vraag van ons. Goede info vooraf en tijdens de reis. Bouwstenen die goed op elkaar aansloten en vervoer was steeds goed geregeld. Mooie en afwisselende plekken waar we sliepen. Kortom: een Top vakantie!

Autoreis westkust Verenigde Staten

Dankzij Riksja Travel een fantastische rondreis gemaakt langs de westkust van de Verenigde Staten. Eerst zelf een globaal plan opgesteld en daarna met de medewerkers van Riksja Travel alles bekeken, dingen aangepast, wensen doorgegeven. Uiteindelijk een mooi reisplan die langs steden en natuurparken voerde. Riksja regelde tickets, hotel, auto. Ook tijdens de reis, toen een natuurpark niet bereikbaar was ivm brand, hielden ze ons op de hoogte van de ontwikkelingen en gaven bruikbaren adressen door van contactpersoon in de VS. Kortom: geweldige reis, zou zeker weer voor Riksja kiezen. Aanrader! fam Jansen

Zeer complete rondreis Tanzania en Zanzibar, verzorgd door Riksja Travel.

Combinatie van safari met in totaal 4 personen door Serengeti en Ngorogoro, inclusief Lake Natron en daarna samen bijkomen op Zanzibar in een prachtig resort aan de oostkust, plus drie dagen in Stone Town in het mooie Tembo Hotel. Dieren in actie gezien (cheeta, luipaard, leeuw, hyena) en de overweldigende diepte van de Ngorogorokrater. Interessante voetsafari bij Lake Natron, wandeltocht door Stone Town met gids en excursie naar spice plantage. Overnacht in tenten en (luxe) lodges. Alles klopte. Alles was perfect geregeld, ook ter plekke. En prima gidsen die Engels spraken. Riksja Travel geeft je het gevoel dat ze alles speciaal voor jou alleen organiseren.

Wonderful trip to West Canada

Due to COVID we changed our plans and travelled to West Canada instead of South Africa and did not regret it. Riksja planned our trip just like we wanted it. The roadbook and whatsapp tips were very interesting. We will definitely book with Riksja again, since South Africa is still on our wish list.

fantastic trip of 2 weeks Portugal

It was a fantastic trip of 2 weeks of Portugal. The hotels are so various with good breakfast. The place of the hotels are perfect too. The excursion were also perfect The only thing we ask for 2 singel beds. The don’t have always 2 beds only 1 king of queen bed.

Greece is amazing

Greece is amazing, but so is Riksjatravel. They arranged the most beautiful stops. The hotels, studio and appartement were perfectly situated. Lefkas was a bit too calm in this season. We travelled through Singapore and…

We travelled through Singapore and Maleisie for three weeks. Riksja had arranged hotels/resorts and travelling. That was very relaxed and we recommend. Driving yourself is possible but maybe stressfully because of the crowdness and unexpected delays.

We wanted to enjoy Canada's wildlife. We got a lot more. we got to know a beautiful country with its fantastic nature and beautiful views. 3 weeks traveling through Costa Rica

The whole trip of 3 weeks to Costa Rica was awesome. Riksja organized our trip a few months before and we couldn't be better prepared. From the start of our trip until the end, they were in contact with us and helped us with all kind of questions. Beside that they also send us some tips when visited a new place. Everything was perfectly arranged for us. Even when the wildfires threatened the elektriciteit supply at a resort in Jasper, alternative accommodation was swiftly arranged at no extra cost. All accommodation was first class.

Roundtrip Portugal

We Made a beautiful roundtrip through the middle and south of Portugal. We have been to villages that we probably wouldn’t have found ourselves. A very nice trip through West Canada

After 2 years of waiting because of Covid we went to West Canada. Al these years Riksja Travel keeps us well informed about the situation and options for replanning our trip. Riksja Travel is a very nice organization to make your trip to your liking, you can contact them every moment and get a good and direct response. They take you to very exclusive places, alternately in hotels, lodges and cabins in or near the parks. Before the start of the trip we got all information for the bookings, vouchers, car rental, points of interest and information about travelling and procedures entering Canada. A warm welcome awaits Aberdeen for Connect 2024

Global travel continues to grow post-pandemic, and the return of international markets to Scotland has been very much in evidence. Visitors from the US have made a strong return to Scotland ahead of other areas of the UK and, with restrictions removed and more flights returning, we hear further reports of growing leisure travel demand from the Chinese and even the Australian markets.

It has been great to see Scottish tourism businesses keen to take advantage of these higher spending long haul visitors in particular, and increasingly recognising working with the travel trade as a way to access the opportunity. In fact 64% of international visitors to Britain use travel intermediaries to plan and book their package. And among long-haul travellers it’s as much as 73%, so working with travel intermediaries can be a very targeted and lucrative way to get your Scottish tourism offering out into market.

Travel intermediaries take various forms - be that tour operators or DMCs, traditional retail or online travel agents, even airlines’ own vacation companies - and they can operate very differently in different markets. But pick the right ones to work with and the benefits can go beyond higher yield visitors, to also helping you be more targeted in the ones you attract and in managing the flow of visitors how and when you want them.

Our Intermediary Marketing team works hard year-round to understand that complicated intermediary landscape, and to identify those operators, who we hope will have the best fit for Scotland and Scottish tourism businesses.  This week in Aberdeen, we'll be welcoming 250 of them to our annual flagship travel trade event, VisitScotland Connect.

These global travel trade ‘buyers’ from 23 countries, including North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and the UK domestic market have already begun arriving in Scotland, and over the 2 days of the event will each undertake a busy diary of pre-arranged meetings with the 220 Scottish tourism businesses taking part.

It’s a chance for our industry to showcase their latest products and services to the travel trade and hopefully sign contracts for, not just 2024, but 2025 and 2026 too.

All the signs are it’s going to be a very productive week for those attending.

We’ll also be giving our buyers a real taste of Scotland while they are here, both at the venue and out and about across the country on a specially curated programme of familiarisation trips (fam trips) to showcase the best of Scotland’s tourism offering across 200 businesses right across the regions.

As their clients begin to express greater interest in travel experiences which are more meaningful and responsible, our giving these buyers first-hand experience of the kind of authentic, local and immersive experiences Scotland can offer is an important way of helping to evolve and develop how Scotland is seen and sold around the globe.

Developing responsible tourism is an integral focus of VisitScotland Connect, and that extends to the venue too, with P&J Live one of the most sustainable venues of its kind in the UK. Everything we need to support the event is on-site reducing the need for additional travel to and from P&J Live, and we are encouraging public transport use with Stagecoach and CityLink bus services and the rail network.

We’ve been working with businesses ahead of the event on how to shape and present their offering, how to demonstrate their fit and the journey they are on to delivering sustainable tourism options. Whether for them that means offering a lower carbon option, enhanced seasonality, use of local produce and supporting local communities, the conversations they have this week will, for sure, be helping shape Scotland’s image abroad. And helping the industry move towards our shared goal of Scotland as a responsible 21st Century destination.

Storm Kathleen: Scotland hit by high winds, heavy rain and travel disruption

Flood and wind warnings remain in place, with Sepa warning of ‘real danger to life’ on coastal roads and paths

High winds and heavy rain from Storm Kathleen persisted through Sunday, battering parts of Scotland and Ireland and disrupting travel.

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) had 18 regional flood alerts and 37 flood warnings in place in Scotland. They have been in force since Saturday.

The Met Office has also issued a yellow wind warning from 9am on Sunday covering parts of the west and northern Highlands, the Isle of Skye and the Hebrides. It will remain in force until 11:59pm.

Winds as high as 73mph were recorded in Drumalbin, South Lanarkshire.

A previous warning stretched from the Scottish Borders to just south of Stirling. It spanned the west coast, throughout much of central Scotland, and ended just short of the east coast.

Janine Hensman, Sepa’s flood duty manager, said: “Across Sunday, we’ll continue to see high tides, storm surges and large waves across coastal areas. This combination is particularly dangerous – especially around high tides. There is real danger to life from wave overtopping, particularly around causeways, coastal roads and paths.

“While the risk is greatest around high tide times, our message is clear: Take extra care if you are near the coast at any point and stay well clear of waves and water. Be careful when travelling around exposed coastal areas and don’t walk or drive through flood water, as there may be hidden hazards.”

She added: “Whilst Storm Kathleen will ease on Sunday evening, another weather system is on the way. Significant flooding from rivers and surface water is possible in southern, central and north-eastern areas on Tuesday, with coastal flooding continuing due to high spring tides.

“Flood alerts and warnings are in place, so stay up to date though our website. We will continue to work with the Met Office to monitor the situation 24/7 and review regional flood alerts and local flood warnings as required.”

The Met Office has warned of potential power cuts, damage to buildings, poor mobile phone coverage and danger to life because of large waves and debris from beaches being thrown on to seafronts. About 34,000 people were left without electricity on Saturday, with a few thousand customers remaining without power overnight, but by Sunday afternoon almost all had had their supply restored.

CalMac, Scotland’s largest ferry operator, cancelled a number of its services and many other ferries were operating on reduced timetables, while others faced potential disruption.

ScotRail also faced a number of disruptions throughout the day, including to its Helensburgh Central and Dumbarton Central services.

However, the services, according to ScotRail, were “starting to return to normal”.

On Saturday, more than 140 flights throughout the UK were cancelled as a result of the storm.

In Ireland, a girl was swept out to sea from the east pier of Dún Laoghaire harbour in County Dublin on Saturday evening. Rescuers were able to pull her out of the water within eight and a half minutes, with a lifeboat volunteer revealing that pockets of air trapped under her coat helped keep her afloat before the rescue.

Andrew Sykes, a volunteer helm with the RNLI, told PA Media that the stormy conditions made the rescue operation difficult.

“With the high winds and storm we were experiencing, with large waves and surge coming off the pier, to get alongside her was extremely difficult,” he said. “She would be pushed one way and we would be pushed another,”

The girl was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Titanic Belfast was forced to close after strong winds damaged part of its roof on Saturday. However, the yellow wind warning covering Donegal, Mayo and west Galway was lifted at 4pm on Sunday.
